A search for resonant absorption of solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei was carried out. A newly developed approach involving low-background cryogenic bolometer based on Tm$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ crystal was used that allowed for significant improvement of sensitivity in comparison with previous $^{169}$Tm based experiments. The measurements performed with $8.18$ g crystal during $6.6$ days exposure yielded the following limits on axion couplings: $|g_{Aγ} (g_{AN}^0 + g_{AN}^3) \leq 1.44 \times 10^{-14}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and $|g_{Ae} (g_{AN}^0 + g_{AN}^3) \leq 2.81 \times 10^{-16}$.
Resonant feedback circuits are proposed as an alternative to normal modes of conducting wall cavities or lumped circuits in searches for hidden sector particles. The proposed method offers several potential advantages over the most sensitive axion searches to date, that employ cavity resonators, including coverage of a wider range of axion masses, the ability to probe many axion masses simultaneously, and the elimination of experimentally troublesome mechanical tuning rod mechanisms. After an outline of the proposed method, we present a noise budget for a straw-man experiment configuration. We…
The search for resonant absorption of Compton and bremsstrahlung solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei have been performed. Such an absorption should lead to the excitation of low-lying nuclear energy level: $A+^{169}$Tm $\rightarrow ^{169}$Tm$^*$ $\rightarrow ^{169}$Tm $+ γ$ (8.41 keV). Additionally the axio-electric effect in silicon atoms is sought. The axions are detected using a Si(Li) detectors placed in a low-background setup. As a result, a new model independent restrictions on the axion-electron and the axion-nucleon coupling: $g_{Ae}\times|g^0_{AN}+ g^3_{AN}|\leq 2.1\times10^{-14}$ and t…
We propose an approach to search for axion dark matter with a specially designed superconducting radio frequency cavity, targeting axions with masses $m_a \lesssim 10^{-6} \text{ eV}$. Our approach exploits axion-induced transitions between nearly degenerate resonant modes of frequency $\sim$ GHz. A scan over axion mass is achieved by varying the frequency splitting between the two modes. Compared to traditional approaches, this allows for parametrically enhanced signal power for axions lighter than a GHz. The projected sensitivity covers unexplored parameter space for QCD axion dark matter fo…
When ultralight axion dark matter encounters a static magnetic field, it sources an effective electric current that follows the magnetic field lines and oscillates at the axion Compton frequency. We propose a new experiment to detect this axion effective current. In the presence of axion dark matter, a large toroidal magnet will act like an oscillating current ring, whose induced magnetic flux can be measured by an external pickup loop inductively coupled to a SQUID magnetometer. We consider both resonant and broadband readout circuits and show that a broadband approach has advantages at small…
The hidden sector photon is a weakly interacting hypothetical particle with sub-eV mass that kinetically mixes with the photon. We describe a microwave frequency light shining through a wall experiment where a cryogenic resonant microwave cavity is used to try and detect photons that have passed through an impenetrable barrier, a process only possible via mixing with hidden sector photons. For a hidden sector photon mass of 53 $μ$eV we limit the hidden photon kinetic mixing parameter $χ< 1.7\times10^{-7}$, which is an order of magnitude lower than previous bounds derived from cavity experiment…
The search for resonant absorption of the Primakoff solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei have been performed. Such an absorption should lead to the excitation of low-lying nuclear energy level: $A+^{169}$Tm $\to ^{169}$Tm$^*$ $\to ^{169}$Tm$ + γ$ (8.41 keV). The Si(Li) detector and $^{169}$Tm target placed inside the low-background setup were used for that purpose. As a result, a new restriction on the axion-photon coupling and axion mass was obtained: $g_{Aγ}({GeV}^{-1})\cdot m_A(eV)\leq1.36\cdot10^{-5}$ (90% c.l.). In model of hadronic axion this restriction corresponds to the upper limit on ax…
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment uses low-temperature solid-state detectors to seek Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and has the world's best exclusion limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section. The experiment uses ionization and athermal phonon signals from particle interactions to discriminate between candidate (nuclear recoil) and background (electron recoil) events with extremely high efficiency. The detectors' low energy threshold for electron recoil events allows us to perform the search for relic axions and solar axions which can interact in the det…
We propose a three-beam stimulated resonant photon collider with focused laser fields in order to directly produce an axion-like particle (ALP) with the two beams and to stimulate its decay by the remaining one. The expected sensitivity around the eV mass range has been evaluated. The result shows that the sensitivity can reach the ALP-photon coupling down to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-14})$ GeV${}^{-1}$ with 1 J class short-pulsed lasers.
A search for resonant absorbtion of 14.4 keV solar axions by $^{57}$Fe target was performed. The Si(Li) detector placed inside the low-background setup was used to detect the $γ$-quanta appearing in the deexcitation of 14.4 keV nuclear level: $A+\rm{^{57}Fe} \to \rm{^{57}Fe^{*}} \to \rm{^{57}Fe} + γ$. The new upper limit for the hadronic axion mass have been obtained: $m_{A} \leq 151$ eV (90% C.L.) ($S$=0.5, $z$=0.56).
We investigate the prospect of an alternative laboratory-based search for the coupling of axions and axion-like particles to photons. Here, the collision of two laser beams resonantly produces axions, and a signal photon is detected after magnetic reconversion, as in light-shining-through-walls (LSW) experiments. Conventional searches, such as LSW or anomalous birefrigence measurements, are most sensitive to axion masses for which substantial coherence can be achieved; this is usually well below optical energies. We find that using currently available high-power laser facilities, the bounds th…
The haloscope is one of the most sensitive approaches to the QCD axion physics within the region where the axion is considered to be a dark matter candidate. Current experimental sensitivities, which rely on the lowest fundamental TM010 mode of a cylindrical cavity, are limited to relatively low mass regions. Exploiting higher-order resonant modes would be beneficial because it will enable us to extend the search range with no volume loss and higher quality factors. This approach has been discarded mainly because of the significant degradation of form factor, and difficulty with frequency tuni…
We propose to use an elongated rectangular waveguide near its cutoff frequency for axionic dark matter searches. The detector's large surface area allows for significant signal power, while its narrow transverse dimension and tapered-waveguide coupling suppress parasitic modes. The proposed system can fit inside a solenoid magnet and is sensitive to the QCD-axion in the axion mass $40-400\,μ$eV. We describe the theoretical principles of the new design, present simulation results, and discuss the implementation.
A search for resonant absorption of the solar axion by $^{83}\rm{Kr}$ nuclei was performed using the proportional counter installed inside the low-background setup at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory. The obtained model independent upper limit on the combination of isoscalar and isovector axion-nucleon couplings $|g_3-g_0|\leq 8.4\times 10^{-7}$ allowed us to set the new upper limit on the hadronic axion mass of $m_{A}\leq 65$ eV (95\% C.L.) with the generally accepted values $S$=0.5 and $z$=0.56.
We propose a new collider probe for axion-like particles (ALPs), and more generally for pseudo-Goldstone bosons: non-resonant searches which take advantage of the derivative nature of their interactions with Standard Model particles. ALPs can participate as off-shell mediators in the $s$-channel of $2 \to 2$ scattering processes at colliders like the LHC. We exemplify the power of this novel type of search by deriving new limits on ALP couplings to gauge bosons via the processes $p p \to Z Z$, $p p \to γγ$ and $p p \to j j$ using Run 2 CMS public data, probing previously unexplored areas of th…
A recent Letter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 161804 (2016), claims that for typical dark matter axion search experiments using cylindrical haloscopes, the power gain depends on the relative position of a cavity with respect to the center of a solenoidal magnetic field due to different electric and magnetic couplings. We review this Letter and find a misinterpretation of the coordinate system. We correct this and see no dependence of the coupling strength on the cavity location and the electric and magnetic energies stored in a cavity mode are equal.
We report the results of an axion dark matter search over an axion mass range of 9.39-9.51 $μ$eV. A flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) was added to the cryogenic receiver chain. A system noise temperature of as low as 200 mK was achieved, which is the lowest recorded noise among published axion cavity experiments with phase-insensitive JPA operation. In addition, we developed a two-stage scanning method which boosted the scan speed by 26%. As a result, a range of two-photon coupling in a plausible model for the QCD axion was excluded with an order of magnitude higher in sensitivi…
The axion is a hypothetical particle considered to be the most economical solution to the strong CP problem. It can also be formulated as a compelling component of dark matter. The haloscope, a leading axion detection scheme, relies on the conversion of galactic halo axions into real photons inside a resonant cavity structure in the presence of a static magnetic field, where the generated photon frequency corresponds to the mass of the axion. For maximum sensitivity it is key that the central frequency of the cavity mode structure coincides with the frequency of the generated photon. As the ma…

We show that the magnetic component of the photon field produced by dark matter axions via the two-photon coupling mechanism in a Sikivie Haloscope is an important parameter passed over in previous analysis and experiments. The interaction of the produced photons will be resonantly enhanced as long as they couple to the electric or magnetic mode structure of the Haloscope cavity. For typical Haloscope experiments the electric and magnetic coupling is the same and implicitly assumed in past sensitivity calculations. However, for future planned searches such as those at high frequency, which syn…
Within the increasing interest in the dark matter axion detection through haloscopes, in which different international groups are currently involved, the RADES group was established in 2016 with the goal of developing very sensitive detection systems to be operated in dipole magnets. This review deals with the work developed by this collaboration during its first five years, from the first designs, based on the multi-cavity concept, aiming to increase the haloscope volume and, so, to improve its sensitivity, their evolution, the data acquisition design, and, finally, the first experimental run…
The axion, a hypothetical elementary pseudoscalar, is expected to solve the strong CP problem of QCD and is also a promising candidate for dark matter. The most sensitive axion search experiments operate at millikelvin temperatures and hence rely on instrumentation that carries signals from a system at cryogenic temperatures to room temperature instrumentation. One of the biggest limiting factors affecting the parameter scanning speed of these detectors is the noise added by the components in the signal detection chain. Since the first amplifier in the chain limits the minimum noise, low-noise…
Using microwave cavities one can build a resonant ``light-shining-through-walls'' experiment to search for hidden sector photons and axion like particles, predicted in many extensions of the standard model. In this note we make a feasibility study of the sensitivities which can be reached using state of the art technology.
Toward the systematic search for axion-like particles in the eV mass range, we proposed the concept of a stimulated resonant photon collider by focusing three short pulse lasers into vacuum. In order to realize such a collider, we have performed a proof-of-principle experiment with a set of large incident angles between three beams to overcome the expected difficulty to ensure the space-time overlap between short pulse lasers and also established a method to evaluate the bias on the polarization states, which is useful for a future variable-incident-angle collision system. In this paper we pre…

A brief review of light dark matter particles and their spectroscopy is presented, specifically aimed at understanding the interaction mechanisms of axion and Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) with matter and an interim proposal and some ideas for possible detection of these evasive particles. In order to venture into the highly challenging spectral regions and extremely weak signals involved with these searches (especially for the DFSZ axions), a different scheme is proposed departing from the conventional resonant cavity mass scan and heterodyne detection methods. We aim to look for a fixed mass a…
Axions, hypothetical particles theorized to solve the strong CP-problem, are presently being considered as strong candidates as cold dark matter constituents. The signal power of resonant-based axion detectors, known as haloscopes, is directly proportional to their quality factor $Q$. In this paper, the impact of the use of superconductors in the performances of the haloscopes is studied by evaluating the obtainable $Q$. In particular, the surface resistance $R_s$ of NbTi, Nb$_3$Sn, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ is computed in the frequency, magnetic field and temperature r…
The axion is a well-motivated cold dark matter (CDM) candidate first postulated to explain the absence of $CP$ violation in the strong interactions. CDM axions may be detected via their resonant conversion into photons in a "haloscope" detector: a tunable high-$Q$ microwave cavity maintained at cryogenic temperature, immersed a strong magnetic field, and coupled to a low-noise receiver. This dissertation reports on the design, commissioning, and first operation of the Haloscope at Yale Sensitive to Axion CDM (HAYSTAC), a new detector designed to search for CDM axions with masses above $20$ $μ\…
We report on the first axion search results from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) experiment at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. An energy threshold of 2 keV for electron-recoil events allows a search for possible solar axion conversion into photons or local Galactic axion conversion into electrons in the germanium crystal detectors. The solar axion search sets an upper limit on the Primakov coupling $g_{aγγ}$ of 2.4$ \times 10^{-9}$ GeV$^{-1}$ at the 95% confidence level for an axion mass less than 0.1 keV/c$^2$. This limit benefits from the first precise measurement of the absolute …
We propose a new broadband search strategy for ultralight axion dark matter that interacts with electromagnetism. An oscillating axion field induces transitions between two quasi-degenerate resonant modes of a superconducting cavity. In two broadband runs optimized for high and low masses, this setup can probe unexplored parameter space for axion-like particles covering fifteen orders of magnitude in mass, including astrophysically long-ranged fuzzy dark matter.
The $^{169}$Tm nuclide has first nuclear level at 8.41 keV with magnetic type transition to the ground state and, therefore, can be used as a target nucleus for the search of resonant absorption of solar axions. We plan to use a Tm-containing crystal of a garnet family Tm$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ as a bolometric detector in order to search for the excitation of the first nuclear level of $^{169}$Tm via the resonant absorption of solar axions. With this perspective in mind, a sample of the Tm$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ crystal was grown and tested for its bolometric and optical properties. Measurements of chem…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are undiscovered pseudo-scalar particles that are candidates for ultralight dark matter. ALPs interact with photons slightly and cause the rotational oscillation of linearly polarized light. Dark matter Axion search with riNg Cavity Experiment (DANCE) searches for ALP dark matter by amplifying the rotational oscillation with a bow-tie ring cavity. Simultaneous resonance of linear polarizations is necessary to amplify both the carrier field and the ALP signal, and to achieve the design sensitivity. The sensitivity of the current prototype experiment DANCE Act-1 is le…
Direct-detection searches for axions and hidden photons are playing an increasingly prominent role in the search for dark matter. In this work, we derive the properties of optimal electromagnetic searches for these candidates, subject to the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) on amplification. We show that a single-pole resonant search may possess substantial sensitivity outside of the resonator bandwidth and that optimizing this sensitivity may increase scan rates by up to five orders of magnitude at low frequencies. Additional enhancements can be obtained with resonator quality factors exceeding o…
We report on the design and results of the GammeV search for axion-like particles and for chameleon particles. We also discuss plans for an improved experiment to search for chameleon particles, one which is sensitive to both cosmological and power-law chameleon models. Plans for an improved axion-like particle search using coupled resonant cavities are also presented. This experiment will be more sensitive to axion-like particles than stellar astrophysical models or current helioscope experiments.
CAPP-8TB is an axion dark matter search experiment dedicated to an axion mass search near 6.7 $μ$eV. The experiment uses a microwave resonant cavity under a strong magnetic field of 8 T produced by a superconducting solenoid magnet in a dilution refrigerator. We describe the experimental configuration used to search for a mass range of 6.62 to 6.82 $μ$eV in the first phase of the experiment. We also discuss the next phase of the experiment and its prospects.
A new experimental scheme is proposed to search for almost monochromatic solar axions, whose existence has not been discussed heretofore. The axions would be produced when thermally excited $^{57}$Fe in the sun relaxes to its ground state and could be detected via resonant excitation of the same nuclide in a laboratory. A detailed calculation shows that the rate of the excitation is up to order 10 events/day/kg-$^{57}$Fe. The excitation can be detected efficiently using bolometers or liquid scintillators.
The electromagnetic coupling axion-photon in a microwave cavity is revisited with the Boundary Integral - Resonant Mode Expansion (BI-RME) 3D technique. Such full-wave modal technique has been applied for the rigorous analysis of the excitation of a microwave cavity with an axion field. In this scenario, the electromagnetic field generated by the axion-photon coupling can be assumed to be driven by equivalent electrical charge and current densities. These densities have been inserted in the general BI-RME 3D equations, which express the RF electromagnetic field existing within a cavity as an i…

Light axion-like particles (ALPs) that couple to two photons are allowed in a number of proposed extensions to the Standard Model of elementary particles. Of particular interest from a theoretical and observational standpoint is the energy regime near 0.1 meV. We present results from a pilot experiment to search for a signal from a 0.14 meV scalar ALP by way of its coupling to two photons. Using a copper resonant cavity cooled to four degrees Kelvin while immersed in a seven Tesla magnetic field, and coupled to a low noise cryogenic amplifier and room temperature receiver, we exclude an ALP-dr…
CUORE is a proposed tightly packed array of 1000 TeO_{2} bolometers, each being a cube 5 cm on a side with a mass of 750 gms. The array consists of 25 vertical towers, arranged in a square, of 5 towers by 5 towers, each containing 10 layers of 4 crystals. The design of the detector is optimized for ultralow- background searches for neutrinoless double beta decay of ^{130}Te (33.8% abundance), cold dark matter, solar axions, and rare nuclear decays. A preliminary experiment involving 20 crystals of various sizes (MIBETA) has been completed, and a single CUORE tower is being constructed as a sma…
We treat prospects for multimessenger astronomy with giant flares (GFs), a rare transient event featured by magnetars that can be as luminous as a hundred of the brightest supernovae ever observed. The beamed photons could correlate with an axion counterpart via resonant conversion in the magnetosphere. In a realistic parameter space, we find that the sensitivity limit to galactic GFs for currently viable experiments is $\mathrm{g}_{ϕγ}\!\gtrsim\!\mathrm{several}\!\times\!10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ \& $\mathrm{g}_{ϕe}\!\gtrsim\!\mathrm{few}\!\times\!10^{-12}$. We rule out the compatibility of axion …

Sub-eV axion-like particles (ALPs) have been searched for by focusing two-color near-infrared pulse lasers into a vacuum along a common optical axis. Within the focused quasi-parallel collision system created by combining a creation field ($2.5\,\mathrm{mJ}/47\,\mathrm{fs}$ Ti:Sapphire laser) and a background inducing field ($1.5\,\mathrm{mJ}/9\,\mathrm{ns}$ Nd:YAG laser), the detection of signal photons via stimulated resonant photon-photon scattering by exchanging ALPs was attempted in a vacuum chamber. The signal wavelength can be determined via energy-momentum conservation in the vacuum, a…
