We investigate the prospect of an alternative laboratory-based search for the coupling of axions and axion-like particles to photons. Here, the collision of two laser beams resonantly produces axions, and a signal photon is detected after magnetic reconversion, as in light-shining-through-walls (LSW) experiments. Conventional searches, such as LSW or anomalous birefrigence measurements, are most sensitive to axion masses for which substantial coherence can be achieved; this is usually well below optical energies. We find that using currently available high-power laser facilities, the bounds that can be achieved by our approach outperform traditional LSW at axion masses between $0.5-6$ eV, set by the optical laser frequencies and collision angle. These bounds can be further improved through coherent scattering off laser substructures, probing axion-photon couplings down to $g_{aγγ}\sim 10^{-8} {\text{GeV}^{-1}}$, comparable with existing CAST bounds. Assuming a day long measurement per angular step, the QCD axion band can be reached.
We propose an approach to search for axion dark matter with a specially designed superconducting radio frequency cavity, targeting axions with masses $m_a \lesssim 10^{-6} \text{ eV}$. Our approach exploits axion-induced transitions between nearly degenerate resonant modes of frequency $\sim$ GHz. A scan over axion mass is achieved by varying the frequency splitting between the two modes. Compared to traditional approaches, this allows for parametrically enhanced signal power for axions lighter than a GHz. The projected sensitivity covers unexplored parameter space for QCD axion dark matter fo…
The search for resonant absorption of the Primakoff solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei have been performed. Such an absorption should lead to the excitation of low-lying nuclear energy level: $A+^{169}$Tm $\to ^{169}$Tm$^*$ $\to ^{169}$Tm$ + γ$ (8.41 keV). The Si(Li) detector and $^{169}$Tm target placed inside the low-background setup were used for that purpose. As a result, a new restriction on the axion-photon coupling and axion mass was obtained: $g_{Aγ}({GeV}^{-1})\cdot m_A(eV)\leq1.36\cdot10^{-5}$ (90% c.l.). In model of hadronic axion this restriction corresponds to the upper limit on ax…
We propose a three-beam stimulated resonant photon collider with focused laser fields in order to directly produce an axion-like particle (ALP) with the two beams and to stimulate its decay by the remaining one. The expected sensitivity around the eV mass range has been evaluated. The result shows that the sensitivity can reach the ALP-photon coupling down to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-14})$ GeV${}^{-1}$ with 1 J class short-pulsed lasers.
A search for resonant absorbtion of 14.4 keV solar axions by $^{57}$Fe target was performed. The Si(Li) detector placed inside the low-background setup was used to detect the $γ$-quanta appearing in the deexcitation of 14.4 keV nuclear level: $A+\rm{^{57}Fe} \to \rm{^{57}Fe^{*}} \to \rm{^{57}Fe} + γ$. The new upper limit for the hadronic axion mass have been obtained: $m_{A} \leq 151$ eV (90% C.L.) ($S$=0.5, $z$=0.56).
We propose a new collider probe for axion-like particles (ALPs), and more generally for pseudo-Goldstone bosons: non-resonant searches which take advantage of the derivative nature of their interactions with Standard Model particles. ALPs can participate as off-shell mediators in the $s$-channel of $2 \to 2$ scattering processes at colliders like the LHC. We exemplify the power of this novel type of search by deriving new limits on ALP couplings to gauge bosons via the processes $p p \to Z Z$, $p p \to γγ$ and $p p \to j j$ using Run 2 CMS public data, probing previously unexplored areas of th…
Resonant feedback circuits are proposed as an alternative to normal modes of conducting wall cavities or lumped circuits in searches for hidden sector particles. The proposed method offers several potential advantages over the most sensitive axion searches to date, that employ cavity resonators, including coverage of a wider range of axion masses, the ability to probe many axion masses simultaneously, and the elimination of experimentally troublesome mechanical tuning rod mechanisms. After an outline of the proposed method, we present a noise budget for a straw-man experiment configuration. We…
We propose a novel way to search for axion(-like) particles in heavy-ion collisions using prompt photons as the probe and the property of conversion between photon and axion(-like) particles under a strong magnetic field generated in the non-central collisions. The expected result reveals that a new phase space region of the coupling constant for photon and axion(-like) particles can be covered in the future high energy nuclear colliders.
We study in detail MSW-like resonant conversions of QCD axions into hidden axions, including cases where the adiabaticity condition is only marginally satisfied, and where anharmonic effects are non-negligible. When the resonant conversion is efficient, the QCD axion abundance is suppressed by the hidden and QCD axion mass ratio. We find that, when the resonant conversion is incomplete due to a weak violation of the adiabaticity, the CDM isocurvature perturbations can be significantly suppressed, while non-Gaussianity of the isocurvature perturbations generically remain unsuppressed. The isocu…

A new method for searching for Dark Matter axions is proposed. It is shown that a two-contact SQUID can detect oscillating magnetic perturbations induced by the axions in a strong inhomogeneous magnetic field. A resonant signal is a steplike response in the SQUID current-voltage characteristic at a voltage corresponding to the axion mass with a height depending on the axion energy density near the Earth. The proposed experimental technique appears to be sensitive to the axions with masses $m_a\lesssim 10^{-4}$ eV, which is well-motivated by current researches both in cosmology and in particle …
Axion is a popular candidate for dark matter particles. Axionic dark matter may form Bose-Einstein condensate and may be gravitationally bound to form axion clumps. Under the presence of electromagnetic waves with frequency $ω=m_{a}/2$, where $m_{a}$ is the axion mass, a resonant enhancement may occur, causing an instability of the axion clumps. With analytical and numerical approaches, we study the resonant instability of axionic dark matter clumps with infinite homogeneous mass distribution, as well as distribution with a finite boundary. After taking realistic astrophysical environments int…
We point out that photon regeneration-experiments that search for the axion, or axion-like particles, may be resonantly enhanced by employing matched Fabry-Perot optical cavities encompassing both the axion production and conversion magnetic field regions. Compared to a simple photon regeneration experiment, which uses the laser in a single-pass geometry, this technique can result in a gain in rate of order ${\cal F}^2$, where ${\cal F}$ is the finesse of the cavities. This gain could feasibly be $10^{(10-12)}$, corresponding to an improvement in sensitivity in the axion-photon coupling, $g_{a…
Photon - axion conversions in the resonant cavity with the lowest mode are considered in detail by the Feynman diagram method. The differential cross sections are presented and numerical evaluations are given. It is shown that there is a resonant conversion for the considered process, in which the conversion cross sections are much larger than those of the wave guide in the same conditions. Some estimates for experimental conditions are given from our results.
The search for resonant absorption of Compton and bremsstrahlung solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei have been performed. Such an absorption should lead to the excitation of low-lying nuclear energy level: $A+^{169}$Tm $\rightarrow ^{169}$Tm$^*$ $\rightarrow ^{169}$Tm $+ γ$ (8.41 keV). Additionally the axio-electric effect in silicon atoms is sought. The axions are detected using a Si(Li) detectors placed in a low-background setup. As a result, a new model independent restrictions on the axion-electron and the axion-nucleon coupling: $g_{Ae}\times|g^0_{AN}+ g^3_{AN}|\leq 2.1\times10^{-14}$ and t…
A search for resonant absorption of the solar axion by $^{83}\rm{Kr}$ nuclei was performed using the proportional counter installed inside the low-background setup at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory. The obtained model independent upper limit on the combination of isoscalar and isovector axion-nucleon couplings $|g_3-g_0|\leq 8.4\times 10^{-7}$ allowed us to set the new upper limit on the hadronic axion mass of $m_{A}\leq 65$ eV (95\% C.L.) with the generally accepted values $S$=0.5 and $z$=0.56.
We describe a method based on precision magnetometry that can extend the search for axion-mediated spin-dependent forces by several orders of magnitude. By combining techniques used in nuclear magnetic resonance and short-distance tests of gravity, our approach can substantially improve upon current experimental limits set by astrophysics, and probe deep into the theoretically interesting regime for the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) axion. Our method is sensitive to PQ axion decay constants between 10^9 and 10^12 GeV or axion masses between 10^-6 and 10^-3 eV, independent of the cosmic axion abundance.
We find that the adiabatic fluctuations produced in the primordial plasma by cosmological inflation resonantly excite the axion field during the QCD phase transition by pumping axions from low momentum modes to modes with momentum up to of order $\sqrt{3} m$ where $m$ is the axion mass. We derive the momentum distribution of the excited axions. The fraction of cold axions that get excited is of order one if the axion mass is larger than a few $μ$eV. The effect occurs whether inflation happens before or after the Peccei-Quinn phase transition.
In these proceedings we use recent LHC heavy-ion data to set a limit on axion-like particles coupling to electromagnetism with mass in the range 10-100 GeV. We recast ATLAS data as per the strategy proposed in 1607.06083, and find results in-line with the projections given there.
When ultralight axion dark matter encounters a static magnetic field, it sources an effective electric current that follows the magnetic field lines and oscillates at the axion Compton frequency. We propose a new experiment to detect this axion effective current. In the presence of axion dark matter, a large toroidal magnet will act like an oscillating current ring, whose induced magnetic flux can be measured by an external pickup loop inductively coupled to a SQUID magnetometer. We consider both resonant and broadband readout circuits and show that a broadband approach has advantages at small…
Detection schemes for the quantum chromodynamics axions and other axion-like particles in light-shining-through-a-wall (LSW) experiments are based on the conversion of these particles into photons in a magnetic field. An alternative scheme may involve the detection via a resonant atomic or molecular transition induced by resonant axion absorption. The signal obtained in this process is second order in the axion-electron interaction constant but may become first order if we allow interference between the axion-induced transition amplitude and the transition amplitude induced by the electromagne…
We discuss the resonant activation phenomenon on a Josephson junction due to the coupling of the Josephson system with axions. We show how such an effect can be exploited for axion detection. A nonmonotonic behavior, with a minimum, of the mean switching time from the superconducting to the resistive state versus the ratio of the axion energy and the Josephson plasma energy is found. We demonstrate how variations in switching times make it possible to detect the presence of the axion field. An experimental protocol for observing axions through their coupling with a Josephson system is proposed…
We study the conditions for the adiabatic resonant conversion of the cold dark matter (CDM) axions into photons in existence of the astrophysically sourced strong magnetic fields such as those in the neutron star magnetosphere. We demonstrate the possibility that the forthcoming radio telescopes such as the SKA (Square Kilometre Array) can probe those photon signals from the CDM axions.
A resonantly-enhanced photon-regeneration experiment to search for the axion or axion-like particles is described. This experiment is a shining light through walls study, where photons travelling through a strong magnetic field are (in part) converted to axions; the axions can pass through an opaque wall and convert (in part) back to photons in a second region of strong magnetic field. The photon regeneration is enhanced by employing matched Fabry-Perot optical cavities, with one cavity within the axion generation magnet and the second within the photon regeneration magnet. Compared to simple …
We show that ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions at the LHC can be used to search for axion-like particles with mass below 100 GeV. The $Z^4$ enhanced photon-photon luminosity from the ions provides a large exclusive production rate, with a signature of a resonant pair of back-to-back photons and no other activity in the detector. In addition, we present both new and updated limits from recasting multi-photon searches at LEP II and the LHC, which are more stringent than those currently in the literature for the mass range 100 MeV to 100 GeV.
A brief review of light dark matter particles and their spectroscopy is presented, specifically aimed at understanding the interaction mechanisms of axion and Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) with matter and an interim proposal and some ideas for possible detection of these evasive particles. In order to venture into the highly challenging spectral regions and extremely weak signals involved with these searches (especially for the DFSZ axions), a different scheme is proposed departing from the conventional resonant cavity mass scan and heterodyne detection methods. We aim to look for a fixed mass a…
We demonstrate the parametric amplification of the stochastic gravitational wave background during inflationary reheating and during axion/moduli oscillations. This amplification enhances the detectability of the string/inflationary gravity wave signal, leaving a finger-print on the spectrum which might be found with future gravitational wave detectors.
The photon splitting gamma -> gamma gamma in a time-independent and inhomogeneous magnetized background is considered when neutral and ultralight spin-0 particles are coupled to two-photons. Depending on the inhomogeneity scale of the external field, resonant photon splitting can occur. If an optical laser crosses a magnetic field of few Tesla with typical inhomogeneity scale of the order of the meter, a potentially observable rate of photon splittings is expected for the PVLAS range of couplings and masses.
In this paper, we consider dynamical Chern-Simons gravity with the identification of the scalar field coupled though the Pontryagin density with the axion dark matter, and we discuss the effects of the parametric resonance on gravitational waves (GWs). When we consider GWs in a coherently oscillating axion cloud, we confirm that significant resonant amplification of GWs occurs in a narrow frequency band, and the amplification is restricted to the late epoch after the passage of the incident waves. We also identify the condition that an axion cloud spontaneously emits GWs. Once we take into acc…
The presence of a primordial magnetic field would have induced resonant conversions between photons and axion-like particles (ALPs) during the thermal history of the Universe. These conversions would have distorted the blackbody spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this context, we derive bounds on the photon-ALP resonant conversions using the high precision CMB spectral data collected by the FIRAS instrument on board of the Cosmic Background Explorer. We obtain upper limits on the product of the photon-ALP coupling constant g times the magnetic field strength B down to g B > …

The effect of a magnetized plasma on the resonant photoproduction of axions on the electromagnetic multipole components of the medium, $i \to f+a$, has been considered. It has been shown that the axion resonant emissivity, due to various reactions involving particles of the medium, is naturally expressed in terms of the emissivity of the photon $\to$ axion transition. The number of axions produced by the equilibrium cosmic microwave background radiation in the magnetar magnetosphere has been calculated. It has been shown that the resonant mechanism under consideration is inefficient for the pr…
A search for resonant absorption of solar axions by $^{169}$Tm nuclei was carried out. A newly developed approach involving low-background cryogenic bolometer based on Tm$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$ crystal was used that allowed for significant improvement of sensitivity in comparison with previous $^{169}$Tm based experiments. The measurements performed with $8.18$ g crystal during $6.6$ days exposure yielded the following limits on axion couplings: $|g_{Aγ} (g_{AN}^0 + g_{AN}^3) \leq 1.44 \times 10^{-14}$ GeV$^{-1}$ and $|g_{Ae} (g_{AN}^0 + g_{AN}^3) \leq 2.81 \times 10^{-16}$.
We study the ultralight axion dark matter with mass around $10^{-22}$ eV in $f(R)$ gravity which might resolve the dark energy problem. In particular, we focus on the fact that the pressure of the axion field oscillating in time produces oscillations of gravitational potentials. We show that the oscillation of the gravitational potential is sensitive to the model of gravity. Remarkably, we find that the detectability of the oscillation through the gravitational wave detectors can be significantly enhanced due to the nonlinear resonance between the ultralight axion and the scalaron.
We have searched for axion-like resonance states by colliding optical photons in a focused laser field (creation beam) by adding another laser field (inducing beam) for stimulation of the resonance decays, where frequency-converted signal photons can be created as a result of stimulated photon-photon scattering via exchanges of axion-like resonances. A quasi-parallel collision system (QPS) in such a focused field allows access to the sub-eV mass range of resonance particles. In past searches in QPS, for simplicity, we interpreted the scattering rate based on an analytically calculable symmetri…
We show that the magnetic component of the photon field produced by dark matter axions via the two-photon coupling mechanism in a Sikivie Haloscope is an important parameter passed over in previous analysis and experiments. The interaction of the produced photons will be resonantly enhanced as long as they couple to the electric or magnetic mode structure of the Haloscope cavity. For typical Haloscope experiments the electric and magnetic coupling is the same and implicitly assumed in past sensitivity calculations. However, for future planned searches such as those at high frequency, which syn…
We investigate the generation of seed magnetic field through the Chern-Simons coupling between the U(1) gauge field and an axion field that commences to oscillate at various epoch, depending on the mass scale. We address axions which begin oscillation during inflation, reheating, and also the radiation dominated era after the thermalization of the Universe. We study the resonant generation mechanisms and highlight that a small oscillation time scale with respect to that of the cosmic expansion can lead to an efficient generation of (hyper) magnetic field via resonant generation, even for ${\ca…
Direct-detection searches for axions and hidden photons are playing an increasingly prominent role in the search for dark matter. In this work, we derive the properties of optimal electromagnetic searches for these candidates, subject to the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) on amplification. We show that a single-pole resonant search may possess substantial sensitivity outside of the resonator bandwidth and that optimizing this sensitivity may increase scan rates by up to five orders of magnitude at low frequencies. Additional enhancements can be obtained with resonator quality factors exceeding o…
The non-resonant conversion of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons into scalar as well as light pseudoscalar particles such as axion-like particles (ALPs) in the presence of turbulent magnetic fields can cause a unique, spatially fluctuating spectral distortion in the CMB. We use the publicly available Planck temperature maps for the frequency channels (70-545 GHz) to obtain the first ALP distortion map using $45\%$ clean part of the sky. The $95^{th}$ percentile upper limit on the RMS fluctuation of ALP distortions from the cleanest part of the CMB sky at $15$ arcmin angular resolution …
The $μ$eV-mass axion is one of the most promising candidates for cold dark matter, and remains to be a well-motivated solution to the CP problem of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) via the Peccei-Quinn mechanism. In this paper, we propose a novel method to detect the dark-matter axions in our galaxy via the resonant emission $|{\rm e}\rangle \to |{\rm g}\rangle + γ+ γ^{\prime}_{} + a$ (or absorption $a + |{\rm e}\rangle \to |{\rm g}\rangle + γ+ γ^{\prime}_{}$) in an atomic system with superradiance, where $|{\rm e}\rangle$ and $|{\rm g}\rangle$ stand for the excited and ground energy levels of ato…
If QCD axions form a large fraction of the total mass of dark matter, then axion stars could be very abundant in galaxies. As a result, collisions with each other, and with other astrophysical bodies, can occur. We calculate the rate and analyze the consequences of three classes of collisions, those occurring between a dilute axion star and: another dilute axion star, an ordinary star, or a neutron star. In all cases we attempt to quantify the most important astrophysical uncertainties; we also pay particular attention to scenarios in which collisions lead to collapse of otherwise stable axion…
Due to their high magnetic fields and plasma densities, pulsars provide excellent laboratories for tests of beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics. When axions or axion-like particles (ALPs) approach closely enough to pulsars, they can be resonantly converted to photons, yielding dramatic electromagnetic signals. We discuss the possibility of detecting such signals from bound configurations of axions, colliding with pulsar magnetospheres. We find that all but the densest axion stars, $\textit{oscillons}$, are tidally destroyed well before resonant conversion can take place. Oscillons can be effic…
Recently it has been proposed that dark matter axions from the galactic halo can produce a small Shapiro step-like signal in Josephson junctions whose Josephson frequency resonates with the axion mass [C. Beck, PRL 111, 231801 (2013)]. Here we show that the axion field equations in a voltage-driven Josephson junction environment allow for a nontrivial solution where the axion-induced electric current manifests itself as an oscillating supercurrent. The linear change of phase associated with this nontrivial solution implies the formal existence of a large magnetic field in a tiny surface area o…
