We treat prospects for multimessenger astronomy with giant flares (GFs), a rare transient event featured by magnetars that can be as luminous as a hundred of the brightest supernovae ever observed. The beamed photons could correlate with an axion counterpart via resonant conversion in the magnetosphere. In a realistic parameter space, we find that the sensitivity limit to galactic GFs for currently viable experiments is $\mathrm{g}_{ϕγ}\!\gtrsim\!\mathrm{several}\!\times\!10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ \& $\mathrm{g}_{ϕe}\!\gtrsim\!\mathrm{few}\!\times\!10^{-12}$. We rule out the compatibility of axion flares with the recent XENON1T excess only due to the time persistence of the signal.

We define the theoretical framework and deduce the conditions under which multi-messenger astronomy can provide useful information about neutrino masses and their ordering. The framework uses time differences between the arrival of neutrinos and the other light messenger, i.e. the graviton, emitted in astrophysical catastrophes. We also provide a preliminary feasibility study elucidating the experimental reach and challenges for planned neutrino detectors such as Hyper-Kamiokande as well as future several megaton detectors. This study shows that future experiments can be useful in testing inde…
We discuss how to constrain new physics in the neutrino sector using multimessenger astronomical observations by the IceCube experiment. The information from time and direction coincidence with an identifiable source is used to improve experimental limits by constraining the mean free path of neutrinos from these sources. Over the coming years, IceCube is expected to detect neutrinos from a variety of neutrino-producing sources, and has already identified the Blazar TXS 0506+056 as a neutrino-producing source. We explore specific phenomenological models: additional neutrino interactions, neutr…
Sensitive dark matter (DM) experiments can be well exploited beyond their designated targets, allowing to explore a breadth of physics topics. As we discuss, future large direct DM detection experiments constitute impressive telescopes, complementary to conventional neutrino detectors. This opens a new window into neutrino astronomy, including puzzles such as the origin of supermassive black holes and topics like supernova forecast. Furthermore, DM experiments can act as effective instruments for multimessenger astronomy. This is well illustrated by exploration of relativistic axions from tran…
Pseudoscalar particles like axion-like particles generically couple to two photons, giving rise to the possibility of oscillations with photons in an external magnetic field. These oscillations could lead to measurable imprints in the electromagnetic spectrum of astrophysical sources if the coupling to photons is strong enough. One possible signature is the presence of irregularities in a limited energy range of the spectrum. In this study, anomalous irregularities are searched for in the spectrum of the bright extragalactic TeV emitter PKS 2155-304 as measured by H.E.S.S. to put constraints o…
Predicting signals in direct dark matter (DM) detection experiments requires an understanding of the astrophysical structure of the local halo. Any uncertainty in this understanding will feed directly into all experimental results. However our terrestrial experiments are in a position to study this same astrophysical dependence, and in fact represent our only probe of the local halo on sub-milliparsec scales. This is best achieved in the case of WIMP dark matter if directionally sensitive experiments are feasible, but requires novel parameterizations of the velocity distribution to make model …
Terrestrial searches for the conversion of dark matter axions or axion-like particles into photons inside magnetic fields are sensitive to the phase space structure of the local Milky Way halo. We simulate signals in a hypothetical future experiment based on the Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) that could be performed once the axion has been detected and a frequency range containing the axion mass has been identified. We develop a statistical analysis to extract astrophysical parameters, such as the halo velocity dispersion and laboratory velocity, from such data and find that with only a f…

Axions are increasingly favoured as a candidate particle for the dark matter in galaxies, since they satisfy the observational requirements for cold dark matter and are theoretically well motivated. Fluctuations in the axion field give rise to stable localised overdensities known as axion stars, which, for the most massive, compact cases, are potential neutron star mimickers. In principle, there are no fundamental arguments against the multi-messenger observations of GW170817/GRB170817A/AT2017gfo arising from the merger of a neutron star with a neutron star mimicker, rather than from a binary …
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are light pseudo-scalar particles predicted in many theoretically well-motivated extensions to the standard model of particle physics (SM). The search for cold dark matter (CDM) ALPs has gained tremendous ground over the last few years. Essentially ALPs are characterized by their coupling with two photons which allows ALPs to decay into two photons. In this work, we explore the potential of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) to detect CDM ALPs with radio astronomy in an attempt to detect an observational signature of ALPs conversion onto photons in astrophysical field…
