Generalizing work on graphs, Chang and Roussel introduced $k$-power domination in hypergraphs and conjectured the upper bound for the $k$-power domination number for $r$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices was $\frac{n}{r+k}$. This upper bound was shown to be true for simple graphs ($r=2$) and it was further conjectured that only a family of hypergraphs, known as the squid hypergraphs, attained this upper bound. In this paper, the conjecture is proven to hold for hypergraphs with $r=3$ or $4$; but is shown to be false, by a counterexample, for $r\geq 7$. Furthermore, we show that the squid hypergraphs are not the only hypergraphs that attain the original upper bound. Finally, a new upper bound is proven for $r\geq 3$.
A (simple) hypergraph is a family H of pairwise incomparable sets of a finite set. We say that a hypergraph H is a domination hypergraph if there is at least a graph G such that the collection of minimal dominating sets of G is equal to H. Given a hypergraph, we are interested in determining if it is a domination hypergraph and, if this is not the case, we want to find domination hypergraphs in some sense close to it, the domination completions. Here we will focus on the family of hypergraphs containing all the subsets with the same cardinality, the uniform hypergraphs of maximum size. Specifi…
The power domination problem seeks to find the placement of the minimum number of sensors needed to monitor an electric power network. We generalize the power domination problem to hypergraphs using the infection rule from Bergen et al: given an initial set of observed vertices, $S_0$, a set $A\subseteq S_0$ may infect an edge $e$ if $A\subseteq e$ and for any unobserved vertex $v$, if $A\cup \{v\}$ is contained in an edge, then $v\in e$. We combine a domination step with this infection rule to create \emph{infectious power domination}. We compare this new parameter to the previous generalizat…
In this paper we introduce and study the domination game on hypergraphs. This is played on a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ by two players, namely Dominator and Staller, who alternately select vertices such that each selected vertex enlarges the set of vertices dominated so far. The game is over if all vertices of $\mathcal{H}$ are dominated. Dominator aims to finish the game as soon as possible, while Staller aims to delay the end of the game. If each player plays optimally and Dominator starts, the length of the game is the invariant `game domination number' denoted by $γ_g(\mathcal{H})$. This def…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hypergraph on a finite set $V$. A {\em cover} of $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of vertices that meets all edges of $\mathcal{H}$. If $W$ is not a cover of $\mathcal{H}$, then $W$ is said to be a {\em noncover} of $\mathcal{H}$. The {\em noncover complex} of $\mathcal{H}$ is the abstract simplicial complex whose faces are the noncovers of $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we study homological properties of noncover complexes of hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain an upper bound on their Leray numbers. The bound is in terms of hypergraph domination numbers. Also, our proof idea is …
A matching in a hypergraph $H$ is a set of pairwise disjoint hyperedges. The matching number $α'(H)$ of $H$ is the size of a maximum matching in $H$. A subset $D$ of vertices of $H$ is a dominating set of $H$ if for every $v\in V\setminus D$ there exists $u\in D$ such that $u$ and $v$ lie in an hyperedge of $H$. The cardinality of a minimum dominating set of $H$ is called the domination number of $H$, denoted by $γ(H)$. It is known that for a intersecting hypergraph $H$ with rank $r$, $γ(H)\leq r-1$. In this paper we present structural properties on intersecting hypergraphs with rank $r$ satis…
Erdős [On Schütte problem, Math. Gaz. 47 (1963)] proved that every tournament on $n$ vertices has a directed dominating set of at most $\log (n+1)$ vertices, where $\log$ is the logarithm to base $2$. He also showed that there is a tournament on $n$ vertices with no directed domination set of cardinality less than $\log n - 2 \log \log n + 1$. This notion of directed domination number has been generalized to arbitrary graphs by Caro and Henning in [Directed domination in oriented graphs, Discrete Appl. Math. (2012) 160:7--8.]. However, the generalization to directed r-uniform hypergraphs seems…
The \textit{domination number} $γ(\mathcal{H})$ of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}=(V(\mathcal{H}),E(\mathcal{H})$ is the minimum size of a subset $D\subset V(\mathcal{H}$ of the vertices such that for every $v\in V(\mathcal{H})\setminus D$ there exist a vertex $d \in D$ and an edge $H\in E(\mathcal{H})$ with $v,d\in H$. We address the problem of finding the minimum number $n(k,γ)$ of vertices that a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ can have if $γ(\mathcal{H})\ge γ$ and $\mathcal{H}$ does not contain isolated vertices. We prove that $$n(k,γ)=k+Θ(k^{1-1/γ})$$ and also consider the $s$-wise domina…
A matching in a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of pairwise disjoint hyperedges. The matching number $ν(\mathcal{H})$ of $\mathcal{H}$ is the size of a maximum matching in $\mathcal{H}$. A subset $D$ of vertices of $\mathcal{H}$ is a dominating set of $\mathcal{H}$ if for every $v\in V\setminus D$ there exists $u\in D$ such that $u$ and $v$ lie in an hyperedge of $\mathcal{H}$. The cardinality of a minimum dominating set of $\mathcal{H}$ is the domination number of $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by $γ(\mathcal{H})$. It was proved that $γ(\mathcal{H})\leq (r-1)ν(\mathcal{H})$ for $r$-uniform hypergra…
Fractional graph isomorphism is the linear relaxation of an integer programming formulation of graph isomorphism. It preserves some invariants of graphs, like degree sequences and equitable partitions, but it does not preserve others like connectivity, clique and independence numbers, chromatic number, vertex and edge cover numbers, matching number, domination and total domination numbers. In this work, we extend the concept of fractional graph isomorphism to hypergraphs, and give an alternative characterization, analogous to one of those that are known for graphs. With this new concept we pro…
With the aid of hypergraph transversals it is proved that $γ_t(Q_{n+1}) = 2γ(Q_n)$, where $γ_t(G)$ and $γ(G)$ denote the total domination number and the domination number of $G$, respectively, and $Q_n$ is the $n$-dimensional hypercube. More generally, it is shown that if $G$ is a bipartite graph, then $γ_t(G \square K_2) = 2γ(G)$. Further, we show that the bipartite condition is essential by constructing, for any $k \ge 1$, a (non-bipartite) graph $G$ such that $γ_t (G \square K_2 ) = 2γ(G) - k$. Along the way several domination-type identities for hypercubes are also obtained.
The concept of zero forcing is extended from graphs to uniform hypergraphs in analogy with the way zero forcing was defined as an upper bound for the maximum nullity of the family of symmetric matrices whose nonzero pattern of entries is described by a given graph: A family of symmetric hypermatrices is associated with a uniform hypergraph and zeros are forced in a null vector. The value of the hypergraph zero forcing number and maximum nullity are determined for various families of uniform hypergraphs and the effects of several graph operations on the hypergraph zero forcing number are determ…
A 3-tournament is a complete 3-uniform hypergraph where each edge has a special vertex designated as its tail. A vertex set $X$ dominates $T$ if every vertex not in $X$ is contained in an edge whose tail is in $X$. The domination number of $T$ is the minimum size of such an $X$. Generalizing well-known results about usual (graph) tournaments, Gyárfás conjectured that there are 3-tournaments with arbitrarily large domination number, and that this is not the case if any four vertices induce two triples with the same tail. In this short note we solve both problems, proving the first conjecture an…
In a hypergraph with vertex set $V$ and edge set $E$, a real-valued function $f: V \to [0, 1]$ is a fractional transversal if $\sum_{v\in e} f(v) \ge 1$ for every edge $e \in E$. Its size is $|f| := \sum_{v \in V} f(v)$, and the fractional transversal number is the smallest possible $|f|$. We consider a game scenario where two players with opposite goals construct a fractional transversal incrementally, trying to minimize and maximize $|f|$, respectively. We prove that both players have strategies to achieve their common optimum, and they can reach their goals using rational weights.
If ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ is a hypergraph, its edge intersection hypergraph $EI({\cal H})=(V,{\cal E}^{EI})$ has the edge set ${\cal E}^{EI}=\{e_1 \cap e_2 \ |\ e_1, e_2 \in {\cal E} \ \wedge \ e_1 \neq e_2 \ \wedge \ |e_1 \cap e_2 |\geq2\}$. Using the so-called clique-fusion, we show that nearly all cacti are edge intersection hypergraphs of 3-uniform hypergraphs. In the proof we make use of known characterizations of the trees and the cycles which are edge intersection hypergraphs of 3-uniform hypergraphs (see arXiv:1901.06292).
Hypergraph expanders are hypergraphs with surprising, non-intuitive expansion properties. In a recent paper, the first author gave a simple construction, which can be randomized, of $3$-uniform hypergraph expanders with polylogarithmic degree. We generalize this construction, giving a simple construction of $r$-uniform hypergraph expanders for all $r \geq 3$.
Reiher, Rödl and Schacht [J. London Math. Soc. 97 (2018), 77--97] showed that the uniform Turán density of every $3$-uniform hypergraph is either $0$ or at least $1/27$, and asked whether there exist $3$-uniform hypergraphs with uniform Turán density equal or arbitrarily close to $1/27$. We construct $3$-uniform hypergraphs with uniform Turán density equal to $1/27$.
The transmission of a connected hypergraph is defined as the summation of distances between all unordered pairs of distinct vertices. We determine the unique uniform unicyclic hypergraphs of fixed size with minimum and maximum transmissions, respectively.
P. Erdős [On extremal problems of graphs and generalized graphs, Israel Journal of Mathematics 2 (1964), 183-190] characterised those hypergraphs $F$ that have to appear in any sufficiently large hypergraph $H$ of positive density. We study related questions for $3$-uniform hypergraphs with the additional assumption that $H$ has to be uniformly dense with respect to vertex sets. In particular, we characterise those hypergraphs $F$ that are guaranteed to appear in large uniformly dense hypergraphs $H$ of positive density. We also review the case when the density of the induced subhypergraphs of…
Let A(G) be the adjacency tensor (hypermatrix) of uniform hypergraph G. The maximum modulus of the eigenvalues of A(G) is called the spectral radius of G. In this paper, the conjecture of Fan et al. in [5] related to compare the spectral radii of some three uniform hypergraphs is solved. Moreover, some eigenvalues properties of a kind of uniform hypergraphs are obtained.
If ${\cal H}=(V,{\cal E})$ is a hypergraph, its edge intersection hypergraph $EI({\cal H})=(V,{\cal E}^{EI})$ has the edge set ${\cal E}^{EI}=\{e_1 \cap e_2 \ |\ e_1, e_2 \in {\cal E} \ \wedge \ e_1 \neq e_2 \ \wedge \ |e_1 \cap e_2 |\geq 2\}$. In the present paper, we consider 4- and 5-uniform hypergraphs ${\cal H}$, respectively, with $EI({\cal H}) = C_n$. Our results fill the gap between the 3- and the 6-uniform case considered in arXiv:1902.00396.
In this paper, we present several upper bounds for the adjacency and signless Laplacian spectral radii of uniform hypergraphs in terms of degree sequences.
The graph entropy describes the structural information of graph. Motivated by the definition of graph entropy in general graphs, the graph entropy of hypergraphs based on Laplacian degree are defined. Some results on graph entropy of simple graphs are extended to k-uniform hypergraphs. Using an edge-moving operation, the maximum and minimum graph entropy based on Laplacian degrees are determined in k-uniform hypertrees, unicyclic k-uniform hypergraphs, bicyclic k-uniform hypergraphs and k-uniform chemical hypertrees, respectively, and the corresponding extremal graphs are determined.
We study the isomorphism problem for random hypergraphs. We show that it is solvable in polynomial time for the binomial random $k$-uniform hypergraph $H_{n,p;k}$, for a wide range of $p$. We also show that it is solvable w.h.p. for random $r$-regular, $k$-uniform hypergraphs $H_{n,r;k},r=O(1)$.
Given a set $R$, a hypergraph is $R$-uniform if the size of every hyperedge belongs to $R$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called \textit{covering} if every vertex pair is contained in some hyperedge in $\mathcal{H}$. In this note, we show that every covering $[3]$-uniform hypergraph on $n\geq 6$ vertices contains a Berge cycle $C_s$ for any $3\leq s\leq n$. As an application, we determine the maximum Lagrangian of $k$-uniform Berge-$C_{t}$-free hypergraphs and Berge-$P_{t}$-free hypergraphs.
For $0\leα<1$ and a uniform hypergraph $G$, the $α$-spectral radius of $G$ is the largest $H$-eigenvalue of $α\mathcal{D}(G) +(1-α)\mathcal{A}(G)$, where $\mathcal{D}(G)$ and $\mathcal{A}(G)$ are the diagonal tensor of degrees and the adjacency tensor of $G$, respectively. We give upper bounds for the $α$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph, propose some transformations that increase the $α$-spectral radius, and determine the unique hypergraphs with maximum $α$-spectral radius in some classes of uniform hypergraphs.
We study the effect of three types of graft transformations to increase or decrease the distance spectral radius of uniform hypergraphs, and we determined the unique $k$-uniform hypertrees with maximum, second maximum, minimum and second minimum distance spectral radius, respectively.
In this paper, we give some bounds for principal eigenvector and spectral radius of connected uniform hypergraphs in terms of vertex degrees, the diameter, and the number of vertices and edges.
Caro, West, and Yuster studied how $r$-uniform hypergraphs can be oriented in such a way that (generalizations of) indegree and outdegree are as close to each other as can be hoped. They conjectured an existence result of such orientations for sparse hypergraphs, of which we present a proof.
Hypergraphs are an invaluable tool to understand many hidden patterns in large data sets. Among many ways to represent hypergraph, one useful representation is that of weighted clique expansion. In this paper, we consider this representation for non-uniform hypergraphs. We generalize the spectral results for uniform hypergraphs to non-uniform hypergraphs and show that they extend in a natural way. We provide a bound on the largest eigenvalue with respect to the average degree of neighbours of a vertex in a graph. We also prove an inequality on the boundary of a vertex set in terms of the large…
Let $H$ be a 3-uniform hypergraph. A tournament $T$ defined on $V(T)=V(H)$ is a realization of $H$ if the edges of $H$ are exactly the 3-element subsets of $V(T)$ that induce 3-cycles. We characterize the 3-uniform hypergraphs that admit realizations by using a suitable modular decomposition.
A packing of two $k$-uniform hypergraphs $H_1$ and $H_2$ is a set $\{H_1', H_2'\}$ of edge-disjoint sub-hypergraphs of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^{(k)}$ such that $H_1'\cong H_1$ and $H_2'\cong H_2$. Whilst the problem of packing of graphs (i.e. 2-uniform hypergraphs) has been studied extensively since seventies with many sharp results, much less is known about packing of general hypergraphs. In this paper we attempt to find the minimum possible sum of sizes $m(n,k)$ of two $k$-uniform, $n$-vertex hypergaphs which do not pack. We also prove a sufficient condition on the product o…
In this paper we show how the $α$-spectral radius changes under the edge grafting operations on connected $k$-uniform hypergraphs. We characterize the extremal hypertree for $α$-spectral radius among $k$-uniform non-caterpillar hypergraphs with given order, size and diameter. we also characerize the second largest $α$-spectral radius among all $k$-uniform supertrees on $n$ vertices by two methods.
The $p$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph covers many important concepts, such as Lagrangian and spectral radius of the hypergraph, and is crucial for solving spectral extremal problems of hypergraphs. In this paper, we establish a spherically constrained maximization model and propose a first-order conjugate gradient algorithm to compute the $p$-spectral radius of a uniform hypergraph (CSRH). By the semialgebraic nature of the adjacency tensor of a uniform hypergraph, CSRH is globally convergent and obtains the global maximizer with a high probability. When computing the spectral radius…
The Wiener index of a (hyper)graph is calculated by summing up the distances between all pairs of vertices. We determine the maximum possible Wiener index of a connected $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph and characterize for every~$n$ all hypergraphs attaining the maximum Wiener index.
Among all uniform hypergraphs with even uniformity, the odd-transversal or odd-bipartite hypergraphs are more close to bipartite simple graphs from the viewpoint of both structure and spectrum. A hypergraph is called minimal non-odd-transversal if it is non-odd-transversal but deleting any edge results in an odd-transversal hypergraph. In this paper we give an equivalent characterization of the minimal non-odd-transversal hypergraphs by the degrees and the rank of its incidence matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_2$. If a minimal non-odd-transversal hypergraph is uniform, then it has even uniformity, and …
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices and $m$ hyperedges. In [A.~Banerjee, On the spectrum of hypergraph, Linear Algebra and its Application, 614(2021), 82--110], Anirban Banerjee introduced a new adjacency matrix for hypergraphs. In this article we consider the corresponding signless Laplacian matrix $Q(\mathcal{H})$ and discuss about its spectrum.
Extensions of Erdős-Gallai Theorem for general hypergraphs are well studied. In this work, we prove the extension of Erdős-Gallai Theorem for linear hypergraphs. In particular, we show that the number of hyperedges in an $n$-vertex $3$-uniform linear hypergraph, without a Berge path of length $k$ as a subgraph is at most $\frac{(k-1)}{6}n$ for $k\geq 4$.
We generalize the notions of Laplacian and signless Laplacian Estrada index to uniform hypergraphs. For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H,$ we derive an order $r+1$ trace formula of the (signless) Laplacian tensor of $H.$ Among others by using this trace formula, we obtain lower bounds for the signless Laplacian Estrada index and upper bounds for the Laplacian Estrada index. Moreover, we establish a bound involving both the Laplacian Estrada index and Laplacian energy of a uniform hypergraph.
