Bourgain et al.(2001) proved that for $p>1$ and smooth bounded domain $Ω\subseteq\mathbb{R}^N$, \begin{equation*} \lim\limits_{s\to1}(1-s)\iint \limits_{Ω\times Ω}\frac{\lvert f(x)-f(y) \rvert^p}{\lvert x-y \rvert^{N+sp}}dx dy=κ\int \limits_Ω\lvert \nabla f(x) \rvert^p dx \end{equation*} for all $f\in L^p(Ω)$. This gives a characterization of $W^{1,p}(Ω)$ by means of $W^{s,p}(Ω)$ seminorms only. For the case $p=1$, Dávila(2002) proved that when $Ω$ is a bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary, \begin{equation*} \lim\limits_{s\to1}(1-s)\iint \limits_{Ω\times Ω}\frac{\lvert f(x)-f(y) \rvert}{\lvert x-y \rvert^{N+s}}dx dy=κ[f]_{BV(Ω)} \end{equation*} for all $f\in L^1(Ω)$. This characterizes $BV(Ω)$ in terms of $W^{s,1}(Ω)$ seminorm. In this paper we extend the first result and partially extend the second result to extension domains.
We prove a Brezis-Bourgain-Mironescu type formula for a class of nonlocal magnetic spaces, which builds a bridge between a fractional magnetic operator recently introduced and the classical theory.
We prove a general magnetic Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu formula. In particular, after developing a theory of magnetic bounded variation functions, we prove the validity of the formula in this class.
We obtain a Bourgain-Brézis-Mironescu formula on the limit behaviour of a modified fractional Sobolev seminorm when $s\nearrow 1$, which is valid in arbitrary bounded domains. In the case of extension domains, we recover the classical result.
We introduce a large class of concentrated $p$-Lévy integrable functions approximating the unity, which serves as the core tool from which we provide a nonlocal characterization of Sobolev spaces and the space of functions of bounded variation via nonlocal energies forms. It turns out that this nonlocal characterization is a necessary and sufficient criterion to define Sobolev spaces on domains satisfying the extension property. We also examine the general case where the extension property does not necessarily hold. In the latter case, we establish weak convergence of the nonlocal Radon measur…
In this paper we prove Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu's type results (cf. \cite{BBM2001}) (BBM for short) for an energy functional which is strongly related to the fractional anisotropic p-Laplacian. We also provide with the analogous of Maz'ya-Shaposhnikova (see \cite{MS}) type results for these energies and finally we apply these results to analyze the stability of solutions to anisotropic fractional $p-$laplacian equations.
A nonlinear superposition operator $T_g$ related to a Borel measurable function $g:\ {\mathbb C}\to {\mathbb C}$ is defined via $T_g(f):=g\circ f$ for any complex-valued function $f$ on ${\mathbb R^n}$. This article is devoted to investigating the mapping properties of $T_g$ on a new BMO type space recently introduced by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 17 (2015), 2083-2101], as well as its VMO and CMO type subspaces. Some sufficient and necessary conditions for the inclusion result and the continuity property of $T_g$ on these spaces are obtained.
In this note we prove the following theorem in any Carnot group of step two $\mathbb{G}$: \[ \underset{s\nearrow 1/2}{\lim} (1 - 2s) \mathfrak P_{H,s}(E) = \frac{4}{\sqrt π}\ \mathfrak P_H(E). \] Here, $\mathfrak P_H(E)$ represents the horizontal perimeter of a measurable set $E\subset \mathbb{G}$, whereas the nonlocal horizontal perimeter $\mathfrak P_{H,s}(E)$ is a heat based Besov seminorm. This result represents a dimensionless sub-Riemannian counterpart of a famous characterisation of Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu and Dávila.
Following the seminal paper by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu, we focus on the asymptotic behavior of some nonlocal functionals that, for each $u\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$, are defined as the double integrals of weighted, squared difference quotients of $u$. Given a family of weights $\{ρ_ε\}$, $ε\in (0,1)$, we devise sufficient and necessary conditions on $\{ρ_ε\}$ for the associated nonlocal functionals to converge as $ε\to 0$ to a variant of the Dirichlet integral. Finally, some comparison between our result and the existing literature is provided.
We establish a non-local integral difference quotient representation for symmetric gradient semi-norms in $BD(Ω)$ and $LD(Ω)$, which does not require the manipulation of distributional derivatives. Our representation extends the formulas for the symmetric gradient established by Mengesha for vector-fields in $W^{1,p}(Ω;\mathbb R^d)$, which are inspired by the gradient semi-norm formulas introduced by Bourgain, Brezis and Mironescu in $W^{1,p}(Ω)$ and by Dávila in $BV(Ω)$.
We study a convergence result of Bourgain--Brezis--Mironescu (BBM) using Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. It is well known that as spaces $W^{s,p} = F^{s}_{p,p}$, and $H^{1,p} = F^{1}_{p,2}$. When $s\to 1$, the $F^{s}_{p,p}$ norm becomes the $F^{1}_{p,p}$ norm but BBM showed that the $W^{s,p}$ norm becomes the $H^{1,p} = F^{1}_{p,2}$ norm. Naively, for $p \neq 2$ this seems like a contradiction, but we resolve this by providing embeddings of $W^{s,p}$ into $F^{s}_{p,q}$ for $q \in \{p,2\}$ with sharp constants with respect to $s \in (0,1)$. As a consequence we obtain an $\mathbb{R}^N$-version of the B…

J. Bourgain and H. Brezis have obtained in 2002 some new and surprising estimates for systems of linear differential equations, dealing with the endpoint case $\mathrm{L}^1$ of singular integral estimates and the critical Sobolev space $\mathrm{W}^{1, n} (\mathbf{R}^n)$. This paper presents an overview of the results, further developments over the last ten years and challenging open problems.
In this paper, we extend the definition of fractional gradients found in Mazowiecka-Schikorra to tempered distributions on $\R^n$, introduce associated regularisation procedures and establish some first regularity results for distributional fractional gradients in $L^{1}_{od}$. The key feature is the introduction of a suitable space of off-diagonal Schwarz functions $\mathcal{S}_{od}(\R^{2n})$, allowing for a dual definition of the fractional gradient on an appropriate space of distributions $\mathcal{S}^{\prime}_{od}(\R^{2n})$ by means of fractional divergences defined on $\mathcal{S}_{od}(\R…
In this note we show that a sharp rigidity estimate and a sharp Korn's inequality for matrix-valued fields whose incompatibility is a bounded measure can be obtained as a consequence of a Hodge decomposition with critical integrability due to Bourgain and Brezis.
We prove an approximation lemma on (stratified) homogeneous groups that allows one to approximate a function in the non-isotropic Sobolev space $\dot{NL}^{1,Q}$ by $L^{\infty}$ functions, generalizing a result of Bourgain-Brezis \cite{MR2293957}. We then use this to obtain a Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality for $\bar{\partial}_b$ on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$.
We show that divergence free vector fields which belong to L^1 on stratified, nilpotent groups are in the dual space of functions whose sub-gradient are L^Q integrable where Q is the homogeneous dimension of the group. This was first obtained on Euclidean space by Bourgain and Brezis.
We offer a variant of a proof of a borderline Bourgain-Brezis Sobolev embedding theorem on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We use this idea to extend the result to real hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{H}^n$.
In this note, we prove a fractional version in $1$-D of the Bourgain-Brezis inequality \cite{bourgain1}. We show that such an inequality is equivalent to the fact that a holomorphic function $f\colon\D\to\C$ belongs to the Bergman space ${\mathcal{A}}^2(\D)$, namely $f\in L^2(\D)$, if and only if $$\|f\|_{ L^1+ {H}^{-1/2}(S^1)}:=\limsup_{r\to 1^-}\|f(re^{iθ})\|_{ L^1+ {H}^{-1/2}(S^1)}<+\infty.$$ Possible generalisations to the higher-dimensional torus are explored.
Let M be a globally Riemannian symmetric space. We prove a duality estimate between pairings of vector fields with divergence zero and and in L^1 with vector fields in a critical Sobolev space on M. As a consequence we get a sharp Calderon-Zygmund estimate for solutions to Poisson's equation on M, where the right side data is manufactured from divergence free vector fields which are in L^1. Such a result was proved earlier by Jean Bourgain and Haim Brezis on Euclidean space.
We apply the borderline Sobolev inequalities of Bourgain-Brezis to the vorticity equation and Navier-Stokes equation in 2D. We take the initial vorticity to be in the space of functions of Bounded variation(BV). We obtain the subsequent vorticity to be in the space of functions of bounded variation, uniformly for small time, and the velocity vector to be uniformly bounded for small time. Such a conclusion cannot follow for initial vorticity taken to be just a measure or in L^1 from the Lamb-Oseen vortex example. Secondly we apply an improved Strichartz inequality obtained earlier by the first …
We sharpen an estimate of Bourgain, Brezis, and Nguyen for the topological degree of continuous maps from a sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ into itself in the case $d \ge 2$. This provides the answer for $d \ge 2$ to a question raised by Brezis. The problem is still open for $d=1$.
Using the div-curl inequalities of Bourgain-Brezis [?MR2057026] and van Schaftingen [?MR2078071], we prove an improved Strichartz estimate for systems of inhomogeneous wave and Schrodinger equations, for which the inhomogeneity is a divergence-free vector field at each given time. The novelty of the result is that one can allow $L^1_x$ norms of the inhomogeneity in the right hand side of the estimate.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb R^n$ and u be a measurable function on $Ω$ such that $|u(x)|=1$ almost everywhere in $Ω$. Assume that u belongs to the $B^s_{p,q}(Ω)$ Besov space. We investigate whether there exists a real-valued function $φ\in B^s_{p,q}$ such that $u=e^{iφ}$. This extends the corresponding study in Sobolev spaces due to Bourgain, Brezis and the first author. The analysis of this lifting problem leads us to prove some interesting new properties of Besov spaces, in particular a non restriction property when $q>p$.
We construct uniformly bounded solutions for the equations $\text{div}\, U=f$ and $\text{curl}\, U=F$ in the critical cases $f \in L^d(T^d,R)$, and respectively, $F \in L^3(T^3,R^3)$. Criticality in this context, manifests itself by the lack of linear solution operator mapping $L^d$ to $L^\infty(T^d)$, Bourgain & Brezis \cite{BB03,BB07}. Thus, the intriguing aspect here is that although the problems are linear, the construction of their solution is not. Our constructions are special cases of a general framework for solving linear equations of the form $T\, U=f$, where $T$ is a linear operator …
