Effects of bond randomness and site dilution are systematically investigated for the Kitaev model describing a quantum spin liquid with fractional excitations of itinerant Majorana fermions and localized fluxes. We find that, in the high-temperature region where the itinerant Majorana fermions release their entropy, both types of disorders suppress the longitudinal thermal conductivity while keeping the specific heat almost unchanged. This suggests that both disorders reduce the mean-free path of the Majorana fermions. On the other hand, in the low-temperature region, the other specific heat peak associated with the entropy release from the localized fluxes is suppressed for both cases, but it is broadened and shifted to the lower-temperature side by the bond randomness, while the position and the width are almost unchanged against the site dilution. Contrasting behavior is also found in the thermal Hall effect under a magnetic field; the half quantization of the thermal Hall conductivity is fragile against the site dilution, while it remains for the bond randomness despite the reduced onset temperature. We discuss the contrasting behavior from the stability of the topological nature by calculating flux condensation and Majorana excitation gap.
The $S=1/2$ Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention as an exactly solvable example with a quantum spin liquid ground state. In a properly oriented external magnetic field, chiral Majorana edge modes associated with a quantized thermal Hall conductance emerge, and a distinct spin-disordered phase appears at intermediate field strengths, below the polarized phase. However, since material realizations of Kitaev magnetism invariably display competing exchange interactions, the stability of these exotic phases with respect to additional couplings is a key issue. Here, we report a…
Excitation by light pulses enables the manipulation of phases of quantum condensed matter. Here, we photoexcite high-energy holon-doublon pairs as a way to alter the magnetic free energy landscape of the Kitaev-Heisenberg magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$, with the aim to dynamically stabilize a proximate spin liquid phase. The holon-doublon pair recombination through multimagnon emission is tracked through the time-evolution of the magnetic linear dichroism originating from the competing zigzag spin ordered ground state. A small holon-doublon density suffices to reach a spin disordered state. The phase tra…
Spin-orbit coupled honeycomb magnets with the Kitaev interaction have received a lot of attention due to their potential of hosting exotic quantum states including quantum spin liquids. Thus far, the most studied Kitaev systems are 4d/5d-based honeycomb magnets. Recent theoretical studies predicted that 3d-based honeycomb magnets, including Na2Co2TeO6 (NCTO), could also be a potential Kitaev system. Here, we have used a combination of heat capacity, magnetization, electron spin resonance measurements alongside inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study NCTO's quantum magnetism, and we have fo…
The combination of geometric frustration, extended hopping, spin-orbit coupling, and a disordered magnetic ground state make NaRuO$_{2}$ an attractive Heisenberg-Kitaev candidate material. Historically, NaRuO$_2$ has been a challenging material to produce, even in polycrystalline form. Here we present synthetic efforts that identify a propensity for Na$_\text{Ru}$ defects to form in NaRuO$_2$, revealing a full solid-solution between NaRuO$_{2}$ and disordered Na$_2$RuO$_3$. We report the synthesis of alloys along the Na$_{3+x}$Ru$_{3-x}$O$_6$ solid solution and characterize changes in the bulk…
We propose a simple solvable variant of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model which displays a quantum phase transition from a fast-scrambling non-Fermi liquid to disordered Fermi liquid. Like the canonical SYK model, our variant involves a single species of Majorana fermions connected by all-to-all random four-fermion interactions. The phase transition is driven by a random two-fermion term added to the Hamiltonian whose structure is inspired by proposed solid-state realizations of the SYK model. Analytic expressions for the saddle point solutions at large number $N$ of fermions are obtained and …
The exactly-solvable Kitaev model of two-dimensional honeycomb magnet leads to a quantum spin liquid (QSL) characterized by Majorana fermions, relevant for fault-tolerant topological quantum computations. In the high-field paramagnetic state of $α$-RuCl3, half-integer quantization of thermal Hall conductivity has been reported as a signature of edge current, but the bulk nature of this state remains elusive. Here, from high-resolution heat capacity measurements under in-plane field rotation, we find strongly angle-dependent low-energy excitations in bulk $α$-RuCl3. The excitation gap has a sex…
Here we revisit the thermodynamics of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid realized on the honeycomb lattice. We address two main questions: First, we investigate whether there are observable thermodynamic signatures of the topological Majorana boundary modes of the Kitaev honeycomb model. We argue that for the time-reversal invariant case the residual low-temperature entropy is the primary thermodynamic signature of these Majorana edge modes, and verify using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations that this residual entropy is present in the full Kitaev model. When time-reversal symmetry is broken, th…
We study ground-state and thermodynamic properties of an $S=1$ Kitaev model. We first clarify the existence of global parity symmetry in addition to the local symmetry on each plaquette, which enables us to perform the large scale calculations up to 24 sites. It is found that the ground state should be singlet and its energy is estimated as $E/N\sim -0.65J$, where $J$ is the Kitaev exchange coupling. We find that a lowest excited state belongs to the same subspace as the ground state and the gap monotonically decreases with increasing system size, which suggests that the ground state of the $S…
In recent years, tools from quantum information theory have become indispensable in characterizing many-body systems. In this work, we employ measures of entanglement to study the interplay between disorder and the topological phase in 1D systems of the Kitaev type, which can host Majorana end modes at their edges. We find that the entanglement entropy may actually increase as a result of disorder, and identify the origin of this behavior in the appearance of an infinite-disorder critical point. We also employ the entanglement spectrum to accurately determine the phase diagram of the system, a…
Kitaev magnets are materials with bond-dependent Ising interactions between localized spins on a honeycomb lattice. Such interactions could lead to a quantum spin-liquid (QSL) ground state at zero temperature. Recent theoretical studies suggest two potential signatures of a QSL at finite temperatures, namely a scaling behavior of thermodynamic quantities in the presence of quenched disorder, and a two-step release of the magnetic entropy. Here, we present both signatures in Ag$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ which is synthesized from $α$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ by replacing the inter-layer Li atoms with Ag a…
We study the 3D Kitaev and Kitaev-Heisenberg models respectively on the hyperhoneycomb and hyperoctagon lattices, both at zero and finite-temperature, in the thermodynamic limit. Our analysis relies on advanced tensor network (TN) simulations based on graph Projected Entangled-Pair States (gPEPS). We map out the TN phase diagrams of the models and characterize their underlying gapped and gapless phases both at zero and finite temperature. In particular, we demonstrate how cooling down the hyperhoneycomb system from high-temperature leads to fractionalization of spins to itinerant Majorana ferm…
We develop high temperature series expansions for the thermodynamic properties of the honeycomb-lattice Kitaev-Heisenberg model. Numerical results for uniform susceptibility, heat capacity and entropy as a function of temperature for different values of the Kitaev coupling $K$ and Heisenberg exachange coupling $J$ (with $|J|\le |K|$) are presented. These expansions show good convergence down to a temperature of a fraction of $K$ and in some cases down to $T=K/10$. In the Kitaev exchange dominated regime, the inverse susceptibility has a nearly linear temperature dependence over a wide temperat…
The bond-disordered Kitaev model attracts much attention due to the experimental relevance in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and $A_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ ($A=$ H, D, Ag, $\textit{etc.}$). Applying a magnetic field to break the time-reversal symmetry leads to a strong modulation in mass terms for Dirac cones. Because of the smallness of the flux gap of the Kitaev model, a small bond disorder can have large influence on itinerant Majorana fermions, and Majorana fermions will be in the Anderson localization state immediately. We call this immobile liquid state Anderson-Kitaev liquid state with two localized Majorana fer…

Two- and three-dimensional Kitaev magnets are prototypical frustrated quantum spin systems, in which the original spin degrees of freedom fractionalize into Majorana fermions and a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field -- a purely local phenomenon that reveals itself as a thermodynamic crossover at a temperature scale set by the strength of the bond-directional interactions. For conventional Kitaev magnets, the low-temperature thermodynamics reveals a second transition at which the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field orders and the system enters a spin liquid ground state. Here we discuss an explicit example that…
In the Kitaev honeycomb model, the quantum spin fractionalizes into itinerant Majorana and gauge flux spontaneously upon cooling, leading to rich experimental ramifications at finite temperature and an upsurge of research interest. In this work, we employ the exponential tensor renormalization group approach to explore the Kitaev model under various perturbations, including the external fields, Heisenberg, and the off-diagonal couplings that are common in the Kitaev materials. Through large-scale manybody calculations, we find a Kitaev fractional liquid at intermediate temperature that is robu…

In the field of frustrated magnetism, Kitaev models provide a unique framework to study the phenomena of spin fractionalization and emergent lattice gauge theories in two and three spatial dimensions. Their ground states are quantum spin liquids, which can typically be described in terms of a Majorana band structure and an ordering of the underlying $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge structure. Here we provide a comprehensive classification of the "gauge physics" of a family of elementary three-dimensional Kitaev models, discussing how their thermodynamics and ground state order depends on the underlying la…
We study the thermodynamic properties of modified spin-$S$ Kitaev models introduced by Baskaran, Sen and Shankar (Phys. Rev. B 78, 115116 (2008)). These models have the property that for half-odd-integer spins their eigenstates map on to those of spin-1/2 Kitaev models, with well-known highly entangled quantum spin-liquid states and Majorana fermions. For integer spins, the Hamiltonian is made out of commuting local operators. Thus, the eigenstates can be chosen to be completely unentangled between different sites, though with a significant degeneracy for each eigenstate. For half-odd-integer …
We explore the dynamics of long-range Kitaev chain by varying pairing interaction exponent, $α$. It is well known that distinctive characteristics on the nonequilibrium dynamics of a closed quantum system are closely related to the equilibrium phase transitions. Specifically, the return probability of the system to its initial state (Loschmidt echo), in the finite size system, is expected to exhibit very nice periodicity after a sudden quench to a quantum critical point. Where the periodicity of the revivals scales inversely with the maximum of the group velocity. We show that, contrary to exp…
Combining thermodynamic measurements with theoretical density functional and thermodynamic calculations we demonstrate that the honeycomb lattice iridates A2IrO3 (A = Na, Li) are magnetically ordered Mott insulators where the magnetism of the effective spin-orbital S = 1/2 moments can be captured by a Heisenberg-Kitaev (HK) model with Heisenberg interactions beyond nearest-neighbor exchange. Experimentally, we observe an increase of the Curie-Weiss temperature from θ= -125 K for Na2IrO3 to θ= -33 K for Li2IrO3, while the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature remains roughly the same T_N = 15 …
We study spectral and thermodynamic properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, a variant of the $k$-body embedded random ensembles studied for several decades in the context of nuclear physics and quantum chaos. We show analytically that the fourth and sixth order energy cumulants vanish in the limit of large number of particles $N \to \infty$ which is consistent with a Gaussian spectral density. However, for finite $N$, the tail of the average spectral density is well approximated by a semi-circle law. The specific heat coefficient, determined numerically from the low temperature behavior of …
We show that in double-chain Mott insulators (ladders), disordered alternating ionic potentials may locally destroy coherence of magnetic excitations and lead to the appearance of spontaneously dimerized islands inside the Haldane spin-liquid phase. We argue that a boundary between the dimerized and Haldane phases of a spin-1/2 ladder supports a localized zero-energy Majorana fermion mode. Based on these findings we suggest a realization of a generalized Kitaev model where Majorana fermions can propagate in more than one dimension.
A polycrystalline sample of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-ZnIrO$_3$ was synthesized via a topochemical reaction, and its structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties were investigated. The magnetization and heat capacity data show the absence of long-range magnetic order at least down to 2 K. A positive Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_W \sim 45$ K probed by the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility indicates that a Kitaev interaction is dominant. These observations suggest that a quantum spin liquid may have been realized. Furthermore, the observation of linear temperature-depend…
Layered $α$-RuCl3 has been discussed as a proximate Kitaev spin liquid compound. Raman and THz spectroscopy of magnetic excitations confirm that the low-temperature antiferromagnetic ordered phase features a broad Raman continuum, together with two magnon-like excitations at 2.7 and 3.6 meV, respectively. The continuum strength is maximized as long-range order is suppressed by an external magnetic field. The state above the field-induced quantum phase transition around 7.5 T is characterized by a gapped multi-particle continuum out of which a two-particle bound state emerges, together with a w…
The 5d-electron honeycomb compound H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_3$ [K. Kitagawa $et$ $al.$, Nature 554, 341-345 (2018)] exhibits an apparent quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. In this intercalated spin-orbital compound, a remarkable pile up of low-energy states was experimentally observed in specific heat and nuclear magnetic (NMR) spin relaxation. We show that a bond disordered Kitaev model can naturally account for this phenomenon, suggesting that disorder plays an essential role in its theoretical description. In the exactly soluble Kitaev model, we obtain, via spin fractionalization, a random bipartite h…
The honeycomb lattice iridates $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A =$ Na, Li) are candidates for realization of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model although their proximity to Kitaev's quantum Spin-Liquid (QSL) is still debated. We report on heat capacity $C$ and entropy $S_{mag}$ for $A_2$IrO$_3$ ($A =$ Na, Li) in the temperature range $0.075~{\rm K}\leq T \leq 155$~K\@. We find a well separated two-peak structure for the magnetic heat capacity $C_{mag}$ for both materials and $S_{mag}$ for Na$_2$IrO$_3$ shows a shoulder between the peaks with a value close to ${1\over 2}$Rln$2$. These features signal the fractionaliza…
Thermodynamics of the Kitaev honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ is studied for different directions of in-plane magnetic field using measurements of the magnetic Grüneisen parameter $Γ_B$ and specific heat $C$. We identify two critical fields $B_c^{\rm AF1}$ and $B_c^{\rm AF2}$ corresponding, respectively, to a transition between two magnetically ordered states and the loss of magnetic order toward a quantum paramagnetic state. The $B_c^{AF2}$ phase boundary reveals a narrow region of magnetic fields where inverse melting of the ordered phase may occur. No additional transitions are detected above …
We investigate the finite-temperature phase diagram of the classical Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the hexagonal lattice. Due to the anisotropy introduced by the Kitaev interaction, the model is magnetically ordered at low temperatures for all values of parameters at which the model has a discrete symmetry. The ordered phase is stabilized entropically by an order by disorder mechanism where thermal fluctuations of classical spins select collinear magnetic orders in which magnetic moments point along one of the cubic directions. We find that there is an intermediate phase between the low-temperatu…
Measurements of the magnetic Grüneisen parameter ($Γ_B$) and specific heat on the Kitaev material candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ are used to access in-plane field- and temperature-dependence of the entropy up to 12 T and down to 1 K. No signatures corresponding to phase transitions are detected beyond the boundary of the magnetically ordered region, but only a shoulder-like anomaly in $Γ_B$, involving an entropy increment as small as $10^{-5} R\log 2$. These observations put into question the presence of a thermodynamic phase transition between the purported quantum spin liquid and the field-polarized…
The ground state of the bilayer Kitaev model with the Heisenberg-type interlayer exchange interaction is investigated by means of the exact diagonalization. Calculating the ground-state energy, local quantity defined on each plaquette, and dynamical spin structure factor, we obtain results suggesting the existence of a quantum phase transition between the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) and dimer singlet states when the interlayer coupling is antiferromagnetic. On the other hand, increasing the ferromagnetic interlayer coupling, there exists no singularity in the physical quantities, suggesti…
We study critical properties of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice at finite temperatures which might describe the physics of the quasi two-dimensional compounds, Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and Li$_2$IrO$_3$. The model undergoes two phase transitions as a function of temperature. At low temperature, thermal fluctuations induce magnetic long-range order by order-by-disorder mechanism. Magnetically ordered state with the spontaneously broken $Z_6$ symmetry persists up to a certain critical temperature. We find that there is an intermediate phase between the low-temperature ordered phase and…
Quantum spin liquid is a disordered magnetic state with fractional spin excitations. Its clearest example is found in an exactly solved Kitaev honeycomb model where a spin flip fractionalizes into two types of anyons, quasiparticles that are neither fermions nor bosons: a pair of gauge fluxes and a Majorana fermion. Here we demonstrate this kind of fractionalization in the Kitaev paramagnetic state of the honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$. The spin-excitation gap measured by nuclear magnetic resonance consists of the predicted Majorana fermion contribution following the cube of the applied magneti…
Despite extensive investigations, a topological state that hosts Majorana edge modes in the magnetic field-induced quantum disordered state of the Kitaev candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$ has been hotly debated. To gain more insight into this issue, we measured the thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ of various samples grown by the Bridgman method. The results show that the half-integer quantum thermal Hall effect is intimately related to the magnitude of longitudinal thermal conductivity and the Néel temperature at zero field, both of which are sample dependent. Samples exhibiting the half-integ…
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) is a conjecture on the nature of isolated quantum systems that guarantees the thermal behavior of subsystems when it is satisfied. ETH has been tested in various forms on a number of local many-body interacting systems. Here we examine the validity of ETH in a class of nonlocal disordered many-body interacting systems --- the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Majorana (SYK) models --- that may be tuned from chaotic behavior to integrability. Our analysis shows that SYK$_4$ (with quartic couplings), which is maximally chaotic in the large system size limit, satisf…
We analyze the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model in the "spin-disordered regime", which is characterized by the temperature being much larger than the magnetic energy scale but small compared to the Mott-Hubbard gap. In this regime the thermodynamics of the Hubbard model can be thought of in terms of gapped charged excitations with an effective dispersion and spin degrees of freedom that only contribute entropically. In particular, the internal energy and the effective dispersion become essentially independent of temperature. An interpretatio…
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) explains how closed unitary quantum systems can exhibit thermal behavior in pure states. In this work we examine a recently proposed microscopic model of a black hole in AdS$_2$, the so-called Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We show that this model satisfies the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis by solving the system in exact diagonalization. Using these results we also study the behavior, in eigenstates, of various measures of thermalization and scrambling of information. We establish that two-point functions in finite-energy eigenstates approx…
We study the thermodynamic condensation of microcavity polaritons using a realistic model of disorder in semiconductor quantum wells. This approach correctly describes the polariton inhomogeneous broadening in the low density limit, and treats scattering by disorder to all orders in the condensed regime. While the weak disorder changes the thermodynamic properties of the transition little, the effects of disorder in the condensed state are prominent in the excitations and can be seen in resonant Rayleigh scattering.
In recent years, several magnetic Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit couplings were suggested to be proximate to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) whose one of the most exciting features is the fractionalization of spin excitations into itinerant Majorana fermions and static $Z_2$ fluxes. Motivated by the emergence of this plethora of 4d and 5d transition metal Kitaev materials and by the fact that some level of disorder is inevitable in real materials, here we study how the Kitaev QSL responds to various forms of disorder, such as vacancies, impurities, and bond randomness. First, we a…
Quantum spin liquid is an exotic quantum state of matter in magnets. This state is a spin analogue of the liquid helium which does not solidify down to the lowest temperature due to strong quantum fluctuations. In conventional fluids, liquid and gas possess the same symmetry and adiabatically connect to each other by bypassing the critical end point. We find that the situation is qualitatively different in quantum spin liquids realizing in a three-dimensional Kitaev model; both gapless and gapped quantum spin liquid phases at low temperatures are always distinguished from the high-temperature …
We present a study of longitudinal thermal transport in the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice, focusing on the role of anisotropic exchange to cover both, gapless and gapped phases. Employing a complementary combination of exact diagonalization on small systems and an average gauge configuration approach for up to $\sim O(10^4)$ spinful sites, we report results for the dynamical energy current auto-correlation function as well as the dc thermal conductivity over a wide range of temperatures and exchange anisotropies. Despite a pseudogap in the current correlation spectra, induced by e…
We investigate ground-state and finite temperature properties of the mixed-spin $(s, S)$ Kitaev model. When one of spins is half-integer and the other is integer, we introduce two kinds of local symmetries, which results in a macroscopic degeneracy in each energy level. Applying the exact diagonalization to several clusters with $(s, S)=(1/2, 1)$, we confirm the presence of this large degeneracy in the ground states, in contrast to the conventional Kitaev models. By means of the thermal pure quantum state technique, we calculate the specific heat, entropy, and spin-spin correlations in the sys…
The ground state fidelity per lattice site is shown to be able to detect quantum phase transitions for the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, a prototypical example of quantum lattice systems with topological order. It is found that, in the thermodynamic limit, the ground state fidelity per lattice site is non-analytic at the phase boundaries: the second-order derivative of its logarithmic function with respect to a control parameter describing the interaction between neighboring spins is logarithmically divergent. A finite size scaling analysis is performed, which allows us to extract the…
We study antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with strong bond randomness, using the real space renormalization group method. We find the low-temperature spin susceptibility of the system follows non-universal power laws, and the ground state spin-spin correlation is short-ranged. Our results suggest that there is no phase transition when the bond randomness increases from zero; for strong enough randomness the system is in a Griffith region with divergent spin susceptibility and short-range spin-spin correlation.
A Majorana fermion is a fermionic particle that is its own antiparticle. Since the theoretical discovery in 1937, the exotic particle has long been searched in particle physics. In the last few decades, however, it has attracted renewed interest in condensed matter physics, where it can be realized as an elementary excitation (quasiparticle) in quantum states of matter. In this review, we discuss another platform for Majorana fermions, the quantum spin liquid, in which interacting magnetic moments remain disordered down to the lowest temperature under strong quantum fluctuations. They are char…
