We consider the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $$i \partial_t u +Δu + |x|^{-b} |u|^{2σ}u = 0,$$ where $N\geq 2$ and $σ$, $b>0$. We first obtain a small data global result in $H^1$, which, in the two spatial dimensional case, improves the third author result in [22] on the range of $b$. For $N\geq 3$ and $\frac{2-b}{N}<σ<\frac{2-b}{N-2}$, we also study the local well posedness in $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1 $, where $s_c=\frac{N}{2}-\frac{2-b}{2σ}$. Sufficient conditions for global existence of solutions in $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$ are also established, using a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type estimate. Finally, we study the $L^{σ_c}-$norm concentration phenomenon, where $σ_c=\frac{2Nσ}{2-b}$, for finite time blow-up solutions in $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$ with bounded $\dot H^{s_c}-$norm. Our approach is based on the compact embedding of $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$ into a weighted $L^{2σ+2}$ space.
We adapt the argument of Dodson-Murphy to give a simple proof of scattering below the ground state for the intercritical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The decaying factor in the nonlinearity obviates the need for a radial assumption.
We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an inverse-square potential in dimensions $3\leq d \leq 6$. We consider both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities in the mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical regime. In the focusing case, we prove a scattering/blowup dichotomy below the ground state. In the defocusing case, we prove scattering in $H^1$ for arbitrary data.
We consider the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u + Δu + |x|^{-b}|u|^αu = 0\quad\text{on}\quad\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}^N, \] with $N\geq 2$, $0<b<\min\{\tfrac{N}{2},2\}$, and $\tfrac{4-2b}{N}<α<\tfrac{4-2b}{N-2}$. These constraints make the equation mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical. We extend the results of Farah-Guzmán and Miao-Murphy-Zheng and prove scattering below the ground state with general initial data.
In this paper we consider the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation \begin{align}\label{inls} i \partial_t u +Δu +|x|^{-b} |u|^{2σ}u = 0, \,\,\, x \in \mathbb{R}^N \end{align} with $N\geq 3$. We focus on the intercritical case, where the scaling invariant Sobolev index $s_c=\frac{N}{2}-\frac{2-b}{2σ}$ satisfies $0<s_c<1$. In a previous work, for radial initial data in $\dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$, we prove the existence of blow-up solutions and also a lower bound for the blow-up rate. Here we extend these results to the non-radial case. We also prove an upper bound for the blow-up…
In this paper we study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing intercritical (mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical) nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation. We firstly establish the profile decomposition of bounded sequences in $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^2$. We also prove a compactness lemma and a variational characterization of ground states related to the equation. As a result, we obtain the $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}}$-concentration of blowup solutions with bounded $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}}$-norm and the limiting profile of blowup solutions with critical $\dot{…
We study the focusing intercritical NLS \begin{align}\label{abstract_nls} i\pt_t u+Δ_{x,y}u=-|u|^αu\tag{NLS} \end{align} on the semiperiodic waveguide manifold $\R^d_x\times \T_y$ with $d\geq 5$ and $α\in(\frac{4}{d},\frac{4}{d-1})$. In the case $d\leq 4$, with the aid of the semivirial vanishing theory \cite{Luo_inter}, the author was able to construct a sharp threshold, which being uniquely characterized by the ground state solutions, that sharply determines the bifurcation of global scattering and finite time blow-up solutions in dependence of the sign of the semivirial functional. As the d…
We consider the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $$i \partial_t u +Δu +|x|^{-b} |u|^{2σ}u = 0,$$ where $N\geq 3$, $0<b<\min\left\{\frac{N}{2},2\right\}$ and $\frac{2-b}{N}<σ<\frac{2-b}{N-2}$. The scaling invariant Sobolev space is $\dot{H}^{s_c}$ with $s_c=\frac{N}{2}-\frac{2-b}{2σ}$. The restriction on $σ$ implies $0<s_c<1$ and the equation is called intercritical (i.e. mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical). Let $u_0\in \dot H^{s_c}\cap \dot H^1$ be a radial initial data and $u(t)$ the corresponding solution to the INLS equation. We first show that if…
We study the generalized Hartree equation, which is a nonlinear Schrödinger-type equation with a nonlocal potential $iu_t + Δu + (|x|^{-b} \ast |u|^p)|u|^{p-2}u=0, x \in \mathbb{R}^N$.We establish the local well-posedness at the non-conserved critical regularity $\dot{H}^{s_c}$ for $s_c \geq 0$, which also includes the energy-supercritical regime $s_c>1$ (thus, complementing the work in [3], where the authors obtained the $H^1$ well-posedness in the intercritical regime together with classification of solutions under the mass-energy threshold). We next extend the local theory to global: for sm…
We consider the focusing inhomogeneous biharmonic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $H^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$, \begin{equation} iu_t + Δ^2 u - |x|^{-b}|u|^αu=0 \end{equation} when $b > 0$ and $N \geq 5$. We first obtain a small data global result in $H^2$, which, in the five-dimensional case, improves a previous result from Pastor and the second author. In the sequel, we show the main result, scattering below the mass-energy threshold in the intercritical case, that is, $\frac{8-2b}{N} < α<\frac{8-2b}{N-4}$, without assuming radiality of the initial data. The proof combines the decay of the nonlinea…
In this paper, we prove a refined version of a compactness lemma and we use it to establish mass-concentration for the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an inverse-square potential.
We construct a new class of multi-solitary wave solutions for the mass critical two dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). Given any integer K>1, there exists a global (for positive time) solution of (NLS) that decomposes asymptotically into a sum of solitary waves centered at the vertices of a K-sided regular polygon and concentrating at a logarithmic rate in large time. This solution blows up in infinite time with logarithmic rate. Using the pseudo-conformal transform, this yields the first example of solution blowing up in finite time with a rate strictly above the pseudo-conform…
We establish the classification of minimal mass blow-up solutions of the $L^2$ critical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u + Δu + |x|^{-b}|u|^{\frac{4-2b}{N}}u = 0, \] thereby extending the celebrated result of Merle from the classic case $b=0$ to the case $0<b<\min\{2,N\}$, in any dimension $N\ge1$.
In this paper, we study the long-time behavior of global solutions to the Schrödinger-Choquard equation $$i\partial_tu+Δu=-(I_α\ast|\cdot|^b|u|^{p})|\cdot|^b|u|^{p-2}u.$$ Inspired by Murphy, who gave a simple proof of scattering for the non-radial inhomogeneous NLS, we prove scattering theory below the ground state for the intercritical case in energy space without radial assumption.
We study stable blow-up dynamics in the $L^2$-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in various dimensions. We first investigate the profile equation and extend the result of X.-P. Wang [38] and Budd et al. [4] on the existence and local uniqueness of solutions of the cubic profile equation to other $L^2$-supercritical nonlinearities and dimensions $d \geq 2$. We then numerically observe the multi-bump structure of such solutions, and in particular, exhibit the $Q_{1,0}$ solution, a candidate for the stable blow-up profile. Next, using the dynamic rescaling method, we investigate stable …
We study the existence and stability of standing waves for a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with quadratic interaction in dimensions $d\leq 3$. We also study the characterization of finite time blow-up solutions with minimal mass to the system under mass resonance condition in dimension $d=4$. Finite time blow-up solutions with minimal mass are showed to be (up to symmetries) pseudo-conformal transformations of a ground state standing wave.
We study the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the $L^2$-supercritical regime with finite energy and finite variance initial data. We investigate solutions above the energy (or mass-energy) threshold. In our first result, we extend the known scattering versus blow-up dichotomy above that threshold for finite variance solutions in the energy-subcritical and energy-critical regimes, obtaining scattering and blow-up criteria for solutions with arbitrarily large mass and energy. As a consequence, we characterize the behavior of the ground state initial data modulated by a quadratic phase.…
We consider the $L^2$ critical inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger (INLS) equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $$ i \partial_t u +Δu +|x|^{-b} |u|^{\frac{4-2b}{N}}u = 0, $$ where $N\geq 1$ and $0<b<2$. We prove that if $u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ satisfies $E[u_0]<0$, then the corresponding solution blows-up in finite time. This is in sharp contrast to the classical $L^2$ critical NLS equation where this type of result is only known in the radial case for $N\geq 2$.
We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations $i\partial_t u+Δu +u|u|^{p-1}=0$ in dimension $1\leq N\leq 5$ and for slightly $L^2$ supercritical nonlinearities $p_c<p<(1+\e)p_c$ with $p_c=1+\frac{4}{N}$ and $0<\e\ll 1$. We prove the existence and stability in the energy space $H^1$ of a self similar finite time blow up dynamics and provide a qualitative description of the singularity formation near the blow up time
In this paper, we study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with focusing point nonlinearity in dimension one. First, we establish a scattering criterion for the equation based on Kenig-Merle's compactness-rigidity argument. Then we prove the energy scattering below and above the mass-energy threshold. We also describe the dynamics of solutions with data at the ground state threshold. Finally, we prove a blow-up criteria for the equation with initial data with arbitrarily large energy.
We consider the minimal mass $m_0$ required for solutions to the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation $iu_t + Δu = μ|u|^{4/d} u$ to blow up. If $m_0$ is finite, we show that there exists a minimal-mass solution blowing up (in the sense of an infinite spacetime norm) in both time directions, whose orbit in $L^2_x(\R^d)$ is compact after quotienting out by the symmetries of the equation. A similar result is obtained for spherically symmetric solutions. Similar results were previously obtained by Keraani, \cite{keraani}, in dimensions 1, 2 and Begout and Vargas, \cite{begout}, in di…
We consider the 2-dimensional focusing mass critical NLS with an inhomogeneous nonlinearity: $i\partial_tu+Δu+k(x)|u|^{2}u=0$. From standard argument, there exists a threshold $M_k>0$ such that $H^1$ solutions with $\|u\|_{L^2}<M_k$ are global in time while a finite time blow up singularity formation may occur for $\|u\|_{L^2}>M_k$. In this paper, we consider the dynamics at threshold $\|u_0\|_{L^2}=M_k$ and give a necessary and sufficient condition on $k$ to ensure the existence of critical mass finite time blow up elements. Moreover, we give a complete classification in the energy class of t…
We consider the 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with focusing point nonlinearity, $$ (δ\text{NLS}) \qquad i\partial_tψ+ \partial_x^2ψ+ δ|ψ|^{p-1}ψ= 0, $$ where $δ=δ(x)$ is the delta function supported at the origin. We show that $δ$NLS shares many properties in common with those previously established for the focusing autonomous translationally-invariant NLS $$ (\text{NLS}) \qquad i\partial_t ψ+ Δψ+ |ψ|^{p-1}ψ=0 \,. $$ The critical Sobolev space $\dot H^{σ_c}$ for $δ$NLS is $σ_c=\frac12-\frac{1}{p-1}$, whereas for NLS it is $σ_c=\frac{d}{2}-\frac{2}{p-1}$. In particular, the $L^2$ crit…
We prove that if $u(t)$ is a log-log blow-up solution, of the type studied by Merle-Raphaël (2001-2005), to the $L^2$ critical focusing NLS equation $i\partial_t u +Δu + |u|^{4/d} u=0$ with initial data $u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$ in the cases $d=1, 2$, then $u(t)$ remains bounded in $H^1$ away from the blow-up point. This is obtained without assuming that the initial data $u_0$ has any regularity beyond $H^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$. As an application of the $d=1$ result, we construct an open subset of initial data in the radial energy space $H^1_{rad}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with corresponding solutions that bl…
We prove global well-posedness, scattering and blow-up results for energy-subcritical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations on the hyperbolic space. We show in particular the existence of a critical element for scattering for all energy-subcritical power nonlinearities. For mass-supercritical nonlinearity, we show a scattering vs blow-up dichotomy for radial solutions of the equation in low dimension, below natural mass and energy thresholds given by the ground states of the equation. The proofs are based on trapping by mass and energy, compactness and rigidity, and are similar to the ones …
We study the focusing NLS equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$ in the mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical (or intercritical) regime, with $H^1$ data at the mass-energy threshold $ \mathcal{ME}(u_0)=\mathcal{ME}(Q)$, where $Q$ is the ground state. Previously, Duyckaerts-Merle studied the behavior of threshold solutions in the $H^1$-critical case, in dimensions $N = 3, 4, 5$, later generalized by Li-Zhang for higher dimensions. In the intercritical case, Duyckaerts-Roudenko studied the threshold problem for the 3d cubic NLS equation. In this paper, we generalize the results of Duyckaerts-Roudenko fo…
Consider the focusing inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$, $$iu_t + Δu + |x|^{-b}|u|^{p-1}u=0,$$ when $b > 0$ and $N \geq 3$ in the intercritical case $0 < s_c <1$. In previous works, the second author, as well as Farah, Guzmán and Murphy, applied the concentration-compactness approach to prove scattering below the mass-energy threshold for radial and non-radial data. Recently, the first author adapted the Dodson-Murphy approach for radial data, followed by Murphy, who proved scattering for non-radial solutions in the 3d cubic case, for $b<1/2$. This work genera…
We study the asymptotic dynamics for solutions to a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with cubic interactions, arising in nonlinear optics. We provide sharp threshold criteria leading to global well-posedness and scattering of solutions, as well as formation of singularities in finite time for (anisotropic) symmetric initial data. The free asymptotic results are proved by means of Morawetz and interaction Morawetz estimates. The blow-up results are shown by combining variational analysis and an ODE argument, which overcomes the unavailability of the convexity argument based on virial-t…
Let $d\geq 4$ and let $u$ be a global solution to the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t+Δu=-|u|^{\frac 4d}u$ with spherically symmetric $H_x^1$ initial data and mass equal to that of the ground state $Q$. We prove that if $u$ does not scatter then, up to phase rotation and scaling, $u$ is the solitary wave $e^{it}Q$. Combining this result with that of Merle \cite{merle2}, we obtain that in dimensions $d\geq 4$, the only spherically symmetric minimal-mass blowup solutions are, up to phase rotation and scaling, the pseudo-conformal ground state and the solitary wave.
We rigorously construct radial $H^1$ solutions to the 3d cubic focusing NLS equation $i\partial_t ψ+ Δψ+ 2 |ψ|^2ψ=0$ that blow-up along a contracting sphere. With blow-up time set to $t=0$, the solutions concentrate on a sphere at radius $\sim t^{1/3}$ but focus towards this sphere at the faster rate $\sim t^{2/3}$. Such dynamics were originally proposed heuristically by Degtyarev-Zakharov-Rudakov (1975) and independently later in Holmer-Roudenko (2007), where it was demonstrated to be consistent with all conservation laws of this equation. In the latter paper, it was proposed as a solution th…
We consider the energy super critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$i\pa_tu+Δu+u|u|^{p-1}=0$$ in large dimensions $d\geq 11$ with spherically symmetric data. For all $p>p(d)$ large enough, in particular in the super critical regime, we construct a family of smooth finite time blow up solutions which become singular via concentration of a universal profile with the so called type II quantized blow up rates. The essential feature of these solutions is that all norms below scaling remain bounded. Our analysis fully revisits the construction of type II blow up solutions for the corresponding he…
We consider the $L^2$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with the delta potential $$i\partial_tu +\partial^2_x u + μδu +|u|^{4}u=0, \, \, t\in \R, \, x\in \R , $$ where $ μ\in \R$, and $δ$ is the Dirac delta distribution at $x=0$. Local well-posedness theory together with sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and the conservation laws of mass and energy implies that the solution with mass less than $\|Q\|_{2}$ is global existence in $H^1(\R)$, where $Q$ is the ground state of the $L^2$-critical NLS without the delta potential (i.e. $μ=0$). We are interested in the dynamics of the sol…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the integrable nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NNLS) equation $ \I\partial_t q(x,t)+\partial_{x}^2q(x,t)+2σq^{2}(x,t)\overline{q(-x,t)}=0 $ with initial data $q(x,0)\in H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$. It is known that the NNLS equation is integrable and it has soliton solutions, which can have isolated finite time blow-up points. The main aim of this work is to propose a suitable concept for continuation of weak $H^{1,1}$ local solutions of the general Cauchy problem (particularly, those admitting long-time soliton resolution) beyond possible singularities. Our main to…
We consider the focusing mass supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with rotation \begin{equation*} iu_{t}=-\frac{1}{2}Δu+\frac{1}{2}V(x)u-|u|^{p-1}u+L_Ωu,\quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^{N}\times\mathbb{R}, \end{equation*} where $N=2$ or $3$ and $V(x)$ is an anisotropic harmonic potential. Here $L_Ω$ is the quantum mechanical angular momentum operator. We establish conditions for global existence and blow-up in the energy space. Moreover, we prove strong instability of standing waves under certain conditions on the rotation and the frequency of the wave. Finally, we construct orbitally stabl…

Consider a branch of unstable solitons of NLS whose linearized operators have one pair of simple real eigenvalues in addition to the zero eigenvalue. Under radial symmetry and standard assumptions, solutions to initial data from a neighbourhood of the branch either converge to a soliton, or exit a larger neighbourhood of the branch transversally. The qualitative dynamic near a branch of unstable solitons is irrespective of whether blowup eventually occurs, which has practical implications for the description of blowup of NLS with supercritical nonlinearity.
In this paper, we consider a 3d cubic focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with slowing decaying potentials. Adopting the variational method of Ibrahim-Masmoudi-Nakanishi \cite{IMN}, we obtain a condition for scattering. It is actually sharp in some sense since the solution will blow up if it's false. The proof of blow-up part relies on the method of Du-Wu-Zhang \cite{DWZ}
We study minimal mass blow-up solutions of the focusing $L^2$ critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse-square potential, \[ i\partial_t u + Δu + \frac{c}{|x|^2}u+|u|^{\frac{4}{N}}u = 0, \] with $N\geqslant 3$ and $0<c<\frac{(N-2)^2}{4}$. We first prove a sharp global well-posedness result: all $H^1$ solutions with a mass (i.e. $L^2$ norm) strictly below that of the ground states are global. Note that, unlike the equation in free space, we do not know if the ground state is unique in the presence of the inverse-square potential. Nevertheless, all ground states have the same, minimal…

The focusing cubic NLS is a canonical model for the propagation of laser beams. In dimensions 2 and 3, it is known that a large class of initial data leads to finite time blow-up. Now, physical experiments suggest that this blow-up does not always occur. This might be explained by the fact that some physical phenomena neglected by the standard NLS model become relevant at large intensities of the beam. Many ad hoc variants of the focusing NLS equation have been proposed to capture such effects. In this paper, we derive some of these variants from Maxwell's equations and propose some new ones. …
We establish blow-up results for systems of NLS equations with quadratic interaction in anisotropic spaces. We precisely show finite time blow-up or grow-up for cylindrical symmetric solutions. With our construction, we moreover prove some polynomial lower bounds on the kinetic energy of global solutions in the mass-critical case, which in turn implies grow-up along any diverging time sequence. Our analysis extends to general NLS systems with quadratic interactions, and it also provides improvements of known results in the radial case.
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with combined nonlinearities, where the leading term is an intracritical focusing power-type nonlinearity, and the perturbation is given by a power-type defocusing one. We completely answer the question wether the ground state energy, which is a threshold between global existence and formation of singularities, is achieved. For any prescribed mass, for mass-supercritical or mass-critical defocusing perturbations, the ground state energy is achieved by a radially symmetric and decreasing solution to the associated stationary equation. For mass-subc…
