We investigate static and spherically symmetric solutions in a gravity theory that extends the standard Hilbert-Einstein action with a Lagrangian constructed from a three-form field $A_{αβγ}$, which is related to the field strength and a potential term. The field equations are derived from a variational principle and are obtained explicitly for a static and spherically symmetric geometry in vacuum. For the case of the vanishing three-form field potential the gravitational field equations can be solved exactly. However, for arbitrary potentials, due to their mathematical complexity, numerical approaches are adopted in studying the behavior of the metric functions and the three-form field. To this effect, the field equations are reformulated in a dimensionless form and are solved numerically by introducing a suitable independent radial coordinate. We detect the formation of a black hole from the presence of a Killing horizon for the time-like Killing vector in the metric tensor components. Several models, corresponding to different functional forms of the three-field potential, namely, the Higgs and exponential type, are considered. In particular, naked singularity solutions are also obtained for the exponential potential case. Finally, the thermodynamic properties of these black hole solutions, such as the horizon temperature, specific heat, entropy and evaporation time due to the Hawking luminosity, are also investigated in detail.
We study a Kerr-like black hole and naked singularity in perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). The critical value of spin parameter $a_c$ is presented to differentiate the black hole from naked singularity. It is seen that for any fixed value of dark matter parameter $α$ the rotating object is black hole if $a\leq a_c$ and naked singularity if $a>a_c$. Also for $-2\leqα<2/3$ the size of the black hole horizons decrease whereas for $2/3<α$ it increases. We also study spin precession frequency of a test gyroscope attached to stationary observer to differentiate a black hole from naked singularity in…
We consider the question here whether the proposed electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational wave signals in binary black hole coalescence may be due to the appearance of a `short lived' naked singularity during the merger. We point out that the change in topology that the spacetime undergoes during the merger can cause the appearance of a naked singularity. In case some matter, in the form of a small accretion disk, is present in the surroundings of the black hole system then the emitted luminosity during the merger would allow to distinguish the scenario where the naked singularity fo…
We investigate semiclassical backreaction on a conical naked singularity space-time with a negative cosmological constant in (2+1)-dimensions. In particular, we calculate the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field on such naked singularity space-time. We then obtain the backreacted metric via the semiclassical Einstein equations. We show that, in the regime where the semiclassical approximation can be trusted, backreaction dresses the naked singularity with an event horizon, thus enforcing cosmic censorship.
We describe a classical configuration of conformal matter forming a naked singularity and discuss its subsequent Hawking evaporation within the context of two dimensional dilaton gravity. The one loop analysis is credible for a large mass naked singularity and suggests the existence of a weak cosmological censorship that would cause it to explode into radiation upon forming. Spacetime singularity has always been of interest since the proof of the Penrose-Hawking singularity theorem. Naked singularity naturally emerges from reasonable initial conditions in the collapsing process. A recent interesting approach in black hole information problem implies that we need a firewall to break the surplus entanglements among the Hawking photons. Classically, the firewall becomes a naked singularity. We find some vacuum analytical solutions in $R^n$-gravity of the firewall-type and use these solutions as concrete models to study the naked singularities. By using standard quant…
We construct here a class of collapsing scalar field models with a non-zero potential, which result in a naked singularity as collapse end state. The weak energy condition is satisfied by the collapsing configuration. It is shown that physically it is the rate of collapse that governs either the black hole or naked singularity formation as the final state for the dynamical evolution. It is seen that the cosmic censorship is violated in dynamical scalar field collapse.
We study scalar radiation spectra from a particle in circular orbit, in the background of the Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity. The differences in the nature of the spectra, from what one obtains with a Schwarzschild black hole, is established. We also compute the angular distribution of the spectra.
We report about the possibility for interacting Kerr sources to exist in two different states - black holes or naked singularities - both states characterized by the same masses and angular momenta. Another surprising discovery reported by us is that in spite of the absence of balance between two Kerr black holes, the latter nevertheless can repel each other, which provides a good opportunity for experimental detection of the spin-spin repulsive force through the observation of astrophysical black-hole binaries.
We show that a Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole can be formed by dropping a charged thin dust shell onto a RN naked singularity. This is in contrast to the fact that a RN naked singularity is prohibited from forming by dropping a charged thin dust shell onto a RN black hole. This implies the strong tendency of the RN singularity to be covered by a horizon in favour of cosmic censorship. We show that an extreme RN black hole can also be formed from a RN naked singularity by the same process in a finite advanced time. We also discuss the evolution of the charged thin dust shells and the causal…
Gravitational collapse is one of the most fruitful subjects in gravitational physics. It is well known that singularity formation is inevitable in complete gravitational collapse. It was conjectured that such a singularity should be hidden by horizons if it is formed from generic initial data with physically reasonable matter fields. Many possible counterexamples to this conjecture have been proposed over the past three decades, although none of them has proved to be sufficiently generic. In these examples, there appears a singularity that is not hidden by horizons. This singularity is called …
The end stage of a gravitational collapse process can generically result in a black hole or a naked singularity. Here we undertake a comparative analysis of the nature of tidal forces in these backgrounds. The effect of such forces is generically exemplified by the Roche limit, which predicts the distance within which a celestial object disintegrates due to the tidal effects of a second more massive object. In this paper, using Fermi normal coordinates, we numerically compute the Roche limit for a class of non-rotating naked singularity backgrounds, and compare them with known results for Schw…
We use the Dirac equation coupled to a background metric to examine what happens to quantum mechanical observables like the probability density and the radial current in the vicinity of a naked singularity of the Reissner-Nordström type. We find that the wave function of the Dirac particle is regular in the point of the singularity. We show that the probability density is exactly zero at the singularity reflecting quantum-mechanically the repulsive nature of the naked singularity. Furthermore, the surface integral of the radial current over a sphere in the vicinity of the naked singularity tur…
We prove the stability of a spacetime with a naked singularity under scalar field perturbations, where the perturbations are regular at the singularity. This spacetime, found by Janis, Newman and Winicour, and independently by Wyman, is sourced by a massless scalar field and also arises as a certain limit of a class of charged dilatonic solutions in string theory. This stability result opens up specific questions for investigation related to the cosmic censorship conjecture and the mechanism by which it is implemented in nature.
It is known that the gravitational collapse of a dust ball results in naked singularity formation from an initial density profile which is physically reasonable. In this paper, we show that explosive radiation is emitted during the formation process of the naked singularity.
Clifton's exact solution of f(R)=R^(1+δ) gravity describing a dynamical spherical metric which is asymptotically Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker is studied. It is shown that it harbours a strong spacetime singularity and that this singularity is naked at late times.
We study strong gravitational lensing in a static, spherically symmetric, naked singularity spacetime, without a photon sphere. The nature of the singularity is found to be lightlike. We discuss the characteristic lensing features of this naked singularity in the strong deflection limit. In spite of the absence of a photon sphere in this spacetime, the bending angle of light diverges, as it approaches the singularity. However, unlike black holes, it is found that the nature of this divergence is nonlogarithmic, and we derive an analytic formula for the same. Moreover, the relativistic rings pr…
In this paper, we study the gravitational collapse of null dust in the cylindrically symmetric spacetime. The naked singularity necessarily forms at the symmetry axis. We consider the situation in which null dust is emitted again from the naked singularity formed by the collapsed null dust and investigate the back-reaction by this emission for the naked singularity. We show a very peculiar but physically important case in which the same amount of null dust as that of the collapsed one is emitted from the naked singularity as soon as the ingoing null dust hits the symmetry axis and forms the na…
We investigate the occurrence and nature of a naked singularity in the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous dust cloud described by higher dimensional Tolman-Bondi space-time. The naked singularities are found to be gravitationally strong.
Motivated by cosmic censorship in general relativity and string theory, we extend Christodoulou's celebrated examples of naked singularity formation in the Einstein-massless scalar field system to include a positive or negative scalar potential of exponential forms, i.e., $V(ϕ)=\pm\exp(2ϕ/κ)$ with a parameter $κ$. Under spherical symmetry and a self-similar ansatz depending on $κ$, we derive a 3-dimensional autonomous system of first-order ordinary differential equations, which incorporates the equations for massless scalar fields as a special case. Local behavior of the phase space is studied…
We present a novel example of a 2-dimensional space-time naked singularity. The solution has a gravity singularity and no-horizon. This example is only a toy model and as such its motivation is mathematical. In the physical sense it is very helpful to understand in simple terms what naked singularities are and the properties they may have.
We present a cylindrically symmetric, Petrov type D, nonexpanding, shear free and vorticity free solution of Einstein's field equations. The spacetime is asymptotically flat radially and regular everywhere except on the symmetry axis where it possesses a naked curvature singularity. The energy momentum tensor of the spacetime is that for an anisotropic fluid which satisfies the different energy conditions. This spacetime is used to generate a rotating spacetime which admits closed timelike curves and may represent a Cosmic Time Machine.
The behaviors of quantum stress tensor for the scalar field on the classical background of spherical dust collapse is studied. In the previous works diverging flux of quantum radiation was predicted. We use the exact expressions in a 2D model formulated by Barve et al. Our present results show that the back reaction does not become important during the semiclassical phase. The appearance of the naked singularity would not be affected by this quantum field radiation. To predict whether the naked singularity explosion occurs or not we need the theory of quantum gravity. We depict the generation …
We investigate here quantum effects in gravitational collapse of a scalar field model which classically leads to a naked singularity. We show that non-perturbative semi-classical modifications near the singularity, based on loop quantum gravity, give rise to a strong outward flux of energy. This leads to the dissolution of the collapsing cloud before the singularity can form. Quantum gravitational effects thus censor naked singularities by avoiding their formation. Further, quantum gravity induced mass flux has a distinct feature which may lead to a novel observable signature in astrophysical …
In this paper we consider non-linear Vaidya spacetime i.e. the case when the mass function has the non-linear form $M(v) \equiv λv^n \,, λ>0 \,, n>1 $. We prove that the central naked singularity might form for values $n>1$ but they are gravitationally weak. Also we investigate the question about forces in the naked singularity and prove that they might be finite only in the case of the gravitationally weak naked singularity.
In the sigma model approach, the $β$-function equations for non critical strings contain a term which acts like a tree level cosmological constant, $Λ$. We analyse the static, spherically symmetric solutions to these equations in $d = 4$ space time and show that the curvature scalar seen by the strings is singular if $Λ\ne 0$. This singularity is naked. Requiring its absence in our universe imposes the constraint $| Λ| < 10^{- 120}$ in natural units. {}From another point of view, our analysis implies that low energy $d = 4$ non critical strings lead to naked singularities.
Gravitational collapse of the Brans-Dicke scalar field with non-zero potential in the presence of matter fluid obeying the barotropic equation of state, $p=wρ$ is studied. Utilizing the concept of expansion parameter, it is seen that the cosmic censorship conjecture may be violated for $w=-\frac{1}{3}$ and $ w=-\frac{2}{3}$ which correspond to cosmic string and domain wall, respectively. We show that physically, it is the rate of collapse and the presence of Brans-Dicke scalar field that govern the formation of a black hole or a naked singularity as the final fate of dynamical evolution and on…
In this paper, we investigate the properties of the Lense-Thirring precession frequency and periastron precession of the relativistic bound orbits in slowly rotating naked singularity spacetimes. We show that the precession frequencies of a stationary test gyroscope are quite unique in slowly rotating naked singularity spacetimes, and therefore, one can easily distinguish them from the slowly rotating Kerr black hole spacetime. On the other hand, we also show that in slowly rotating Joshi-Malafarina-Narayan (JMN1) naked singularity spacetime, negative precession of the timelike bound orbits is…
In this paper, we derive the solutions of orbit equations for a class of naked singularity spacetimes, and compare these with timelike orbits, that is, particle trajectories in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. The Schwarzschild and naked singularity spacetimes considered here can be formed as end state of a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a matter cloud. We find and compare the perihelion precession of the particle orbits in the naked singularity spacetime with that of the Schwarzschild black hole. We then discuss different distinguishable physical properties of timelike…
We consider a static, axially symmetric, and asymptotically flat exact solution of the Einstein vacuum equations, known as the gamma metric. This is characterized by two constant parameters $m$ and $γ$. We find that the total energy associated with this metric is $m γ$. Considering the total energy to be positive, we investigate the nature of a curvature singularity $r=2m$ ($r$ is the radial coordinate) in this metric. For $γ< 1$, this singularity is globally visible along $θ= 0$ as well as $θ= π/2$. However, for $γ> 1$, this singularity is though globally naked along $θ=π/2$, it is not visibl…
Recently, the possibility was pointed out by one of the present authors and his collaborators that an effective naked singularity referred to as "a visible border of spacetime" is generated by high-energy particle collision in the context of large extra dimensions or TeV-scale gravity. In this paper, we investigate the particle creation by a naked singularity in general dimensions, while adopting a model in which a marginally naked singularity forms in the collapse of a homothetic lightlike pressureless fluid. We find that the spectrum deviates from that of Hawking radiation due to scattering …
We compare shadows cast by Schwarzschild black holes with those produced by two classes of naked singularities that result from gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric matter. The latter models consist of an interior naked singularity spacetime restricted to radii $r\leq R_b$, matched to Schwarzschild spacetime outside the boundary radius $R_b$. While a black hole always has a photon sphere and always casts a shadow, we find that the naked singularity models have photon spheres only if a certain parameter $M_0$ that characterizes these models satisfies $M_0\geq 2/3$, or equivalently, i…
It is generally believed that the shadows of either a black hole or naked singularity arise due to photon spheres developing in these spacetimes. Here we propose a new spherically symmetric naked singularity spacetime solution of Einstein equations which has no photon sphere, and we show that the singularity casts a shadow in the absence of the photon sphere. We discuss some novel features of this shadow and the lightlike geodesics in this spacetime. We compare the shadow of the naked singularity here with shadows cast by Schwarzschild black hole and the first type of Joshi-Malafarina-Narayan …
We investigate the causal structure of the Harada-Iguchi-Nakao (HIN)'s exact solution in detail, which describes the dynamical formation of naked singularity in the collapse of a regular spherical cluster of counterrotating particles. There are three kinds of radial null geodesics in the HIN spacetime. One is the regular null geodesics and the other two are the null geodesics which terminate at the singularity. The central massless singularity is timelike naked singularity and satisfies the strong curvature condition along the null geodesics except for the instant of singularity formation. The…
We investigate here the issue of observability of high energy collisions around Kerr naked singu- larity and show that the results are in contrast with the Kerr black hole case. We had shown earlier that it would be possible to have ultrahigh energy collisions between the particles close to the loca- tion r = M around the Kerr naked singularity if the Kerr spin parameter transcends the unity by an infinitesimally small amount a $\rightarrow 1^+$. The collision is between initially ingoing particle that turns back as an outgoing particle due to angular momentum barrier, with another ingoing par…
Generalizing earlier results of Joshi and Dwivedi (Commun. Math. Phys. 146, 333 (1992); Lett. Math. Phys. 27, 235 (1993)), we analyze here the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a matter cloud with a general form of matter for the formation of a naked singularity. It is shown that this is related basically to the choice of initial data to the Einstein field equations, and would therefore occur in generic situations from regular initial data within the general context considered here, subject to the matter satisfying the weak energy condition. The condition on initial data which le…
The paper explores quantum mechanics of half-spin particle motion in the field of Reissner-Nordstroem (RN) naked singularity. It is shown that for any quantum mechanical Dirac particle, irrespective of availability and sign of its electrical charge, the RN naked singularity is separated by an infinitely high positive potential barrier. With like charges of a particle and the source of the RN naked singularity, near the origin there exists the second completely impenetrable potential barrier. It has been proved that in the field of the RN naked singularity, bound states of half-spin particles c…
In this paper, we investigate the light trajectories and shadow properties in the rotating version of null naked singularity (NNS) spacetime which is derived using the Newman- Janis algorithm without complexification method. We discuss some of the geometrical properties and causal structure of Rotating Naked Singularity (RNS) spacetime. The gravitational lensing in a rotating naked singularity is analyzed, and the results are compared to those of a Kerr black hole. In the case of a Kerr black hole, the photon sphere exists for both prograde and retrograde photon orbits, whereas for RNS, the ph…
Naked singularities are hypothetical astrophysical objects, characterized by a gravitational singularity without an event horizon. Penrose has proposed a conjecture, according to which there exists a cosmic censor who forbids the occurrence of naked singularities. Distinguishing between astrophysical black holes and naked singularities is a major challenge for present day observational astronomy. A possibility of differentiating naked singularities from black holes is through the comparative study of thin accretion disks properties around rotating naked singularities and Kerr-type black holes,…
It has been suggested that a naked singularity may be a good candidate for a strong gravitational wave burster. The naked singularity occurs in the generic collapse of an inhomogeneous dust ball. We study odd-parity mode of gravitational waves from a naked singularity of the Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi space-time. The wave equation for gravitational waves are solved by numerical integration using the single null coordinate. The result is that the naked singularity is not a strong source of the odd-parity gravitational radiation although the metric perturbation grows in the central region. Therefor…
Motivated by the recent argument that in the TeV-scale gravity trans-Planckian domains of spacetime as effective naked singularities would be generated by high-energy particle (and black-hole) collisions, we investigate the quantum particle creation by naked-singularity formation in general dimensions. Background spacetime is simply modeled by the self-similar Vaidya solution, describing the spherical collapse of a null dust fluid. In a generic case the emission power is found to be proportional to the quadratic inverse of the remaining time to a Cauchy horizon, as known in four dimensions. On…
In this paper we analyze the redshift as observed by an external observer receiving photons which terminate in the past at the naked singularity formed in a Tolman-Bondi dust collapse. Within the context of models considered here it is shown that photons emitted from a weak curvature naked singularity are always finitely redshifted to an external observer. Certain cases of strong curvature naked singularities, including the self-similar one, where the photons are infinitely redshifted are also pointed out.
We propose here a specific criterion to address the existence or otherwise of Kerr naked singularities, in terms of the precession of the spin of a test gyroscope due to the frame dragging by the central spinning body. We show that there is indeed an important characteristic difference in the behavior of gyro spin precession frequency in the limit of approach to these compact objects, and this can be used, in principle, to differentiate the naked singularity from black hole. Specifically, if gyroscopes are fixed all along the polar axis upto the horizon of a Kerr black hole, the precession fre…
A naked singularity occurs in the generic collapse of an inhomogeneous dust ball. We study the even-parity mode of gravitational waves from a naked singularity of the Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi spacetime. The wave equations for gravitational waves are solved by numerical integration using the single null coordinate. The result implies that the metric perturbation grows when it approaches the Cauchy horizon and diverges there, although the naked singularity is not a strong source of even-parity gravitational radiation. Therefore, the Cauchy horizon in this spacetime should be unstable with respect…
We describe a simple method of determining whether the singularity that forms in the spherically symmetric collapse of inhomogeneous dust is naked or covered. This derivation considerably simplifies the analysis given in the earlier literature, while giving the same results as have been obtained before.
The cosmological constant induced by quantum fluctuation of the graviton on a given background is considered as a tool for building a spectrum of different geometries. In particular, we apply the method to the Schwarzschild background with positive and negative mass parameter. In this way, we put on the same level of comparison the related naked singularity (-M) and the positive mass wormhole. We discuss how to extract information in the context of a f(R) theory. We use the Wheeler-De Witt equation as a basic equation to perform such an analysis regarded as a Sturm-Liouville problem . The appl…
Spherical dust collapse generally forms a shell focusing naked singularity at the symmetric center. This naked singularity is massless. Further the Newtonian gravitational potential and speed of the dust fluid elements are everywhere much smaller than unity until the central shell focusing naked singularity formation if an appropriate initial condition is set up. Although such a situation is highly relativistic, the analysis by the Newtonian approximation scheme is available even in the vicinity of the space-time singularity. This remarkable feature makes the analysis of such singularity forma…
Naked singularities form during the gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous matter clouds. The final nature of the singularity depends on the initial conditions of the matter properties and types of matter profiles. These naked singularities can also be divided into two types: null-like and timelike singularities. The spacelike singularity of the Schwarzschild black hole can be distinguished from the null and timelike naked singularity spacetimes. In light of this, we investigate the precession of timelike bound orbits in the null naked singularity spacetime, as well as tidal force effects and…
We study the quantum fate of a naked curvature singularity sourced by a scalar field via several methods and compare the results obtained. The first method relies on relativistic quantum mechanics on a fixed background employing the Klein--Gordon and the Dirac equations for a static spacetime. We show that both the Klein--Gordon and the Dirac particles feel this singularity therefore this method does not provide its resolution. For comparison, we subsequently employ methods for quantizing the geometry itself. We selected the canonical quantization via conditional symmetries and as a last appro…
In this paper the structure of the generalized Vaidya spacetime when the type-II of the matter field satisfies the equation of the state $P=ρ$ is investigated. Satisfying all energy conditions we show that this spacetime contains the 'eternal' naked singularity. It means that once the singularity is formed it will never be covered with the apparent horizon. However, in the case of the apparent horizon formation the resulting object is a white hole. We also prove that this spacetime contains only null naked singularity.
Motivated by the endeavors of Li Xiang and You-Gen Shen on naked singularities, we investigate the validity of the cosmic censorship conjecture in the context of generalized uncertainty principle. In particular, upon considering both linear and quadratic terms of momentum in the uncertainty principle, we first compute the entropy of a massless charged black hole in de Sitter spacetime at a given modified temperature. Then, we compute the corresponding modified cosmological radius and express the black hole electric charge in terms of this modified cosmological radius and, thus, in terms of the…
