We study a Kerr-like black hole and naked singularity in perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). The critical value of spin parameter $a_c$ is presented to differentiate the black hole from naked singularity. It is seen that for any fixed value of dark matter parameter $α$ the rotating object is black hole if $a\leq a_c$ and naked singularity if $a>a_c$. Also for $-2\leqα<2/3$ the size of the black hole horizons decrease whereas for $2/3<α$ it increases. We also study spin precession frequency of a test gyroscope attached to stationary observer to differentiate a black hole from naked singularity in perfect fluid dark matter. For the black hole, spin precession frequency blows up as the observer reaches the central object while for naked singularity it remains finite except at the ring singularity. Moreover, we study Lense-Thirring precession for a Kerr-like black hole and geodetic precession for Schwarzschild black hole in perfect fluid dark matter. To this end, we have calculated the Kepler frequency (KF), the vertical epicyclic frequency (VEF), and the nodal plane precession frequency (NPPF). Our results show that, the PFDM parameter $α$ significantly affects those frequencies. This difference can be used by astrophysical observations in the near future to shed some light on the nature of dark matter.
In this paper, we investigate the properties of the Lense-Thirring precession frequency and periastron precession of the relativistic bound orbits in slowly rotating naked singularity spacetimes. We show that the precession frequencies of a stationary test gyroscope are quite unique in slowly rotating naked singularity spacetimes, and therefore, one can easily distinguish them from the slowly rotating Kerr black hole spacetime. On the other hand, we also show that in slowly rotating Joshi-Malafarina-Narayan (JMN1) naked singularity spacetime, negative precession of the timelike bound orbits is…
We propose here a specific criterion to address the existence or otherwise of Kerr naked singularities, in terms of the precession of the spin of a test gyroscope due to the frame dragging by the central spinning body. We show that there is indeed an important characteristic difference in the behavior of gyro spin precession frequency in the limit of approach to these compact objects, and this can be used, in principle, to differentiate the naked singularity from black hole. Specifically, if gyroscopes are fixed all along the polar axis upto the horizon of a Kerr black hole, the precession fre…
We study the critical values of the quintessential and spin parameters, to distinguish a rotating Kiselev black hole (RKBH) from a naked singularity. For any value of the dimensionless quintessential parameter $ω_{q} \in (-1, -1/3)$, when increasing the value of quintessential parameter $α$, the size of the event horizon increases, whereas the size of the outer horizon decreases. We then study the spin precession of a test gyroscope attached to a stationary observer in this spacetime. Using the spin precessions we differentiate black holes from naked singularities. If the precession frequency …
It is now known that, apart from black holes, some naked singularities can also cast shadows which provide their possible observable signatures. We examine the relevant question here as to how to distinguish then these entities from each other, in terms of further physical signatures. We point out that black holes always admit timelike bound orbits having positive perihelion precession. Also, while a naked singularity with a photon sphere can cast a shadow, it could also admit positive perihelion precession for such orbits, thereby mimicking a black hole. This indicates that compact objects wi…
We study here the precession of the spin of a test gyroscope attached to a stationary observer in the Kerr spacetime, specifically, to distinguish naked singularity (NS) from black hole (BH). It was shown recently that for gyros attached to static observers, their precession frequency became arbitrarily large in the limit of approach to the ergosurface. For gyros attached to stationary observers that move with non-zero angular velocity $Ω$, this divergence at the ergosurface can be avoided. Specifically, for such gyros, the precession frequencies diverge on the event horizon of a BH, but are f…
It is now known that the shadow is not only the property of a black hole, it can also be cast by other compact objects like naked singularities. However, there exist some novel features of the shadow of the naked singularities which are elaborately discussed in some recent articles. In the earlier literature, it is also shown that a naked singularity may admit negative precession of bound timelike orbits which cannot be seen in Schwarzschild and Kerr black hole spacetimes. This distinguishable behavior of timelike bound orbit in the presence of the naked singularity along with the novel featur…
It is commonly thought that the final product of gravitational collapse is a black hole. Nevertheless, theoretical studies have not yet provided a final answer to the question whether black holes are the only possible outcome or whether naked singularities are also allowed. Observational tests may thus represent a complementary approach. In the present paper, we consider the Janis-Newman-Winicour metric, which describes a rotating source with a surface-like naked singularity. We calculate iron line shapes in the reflection spectrum of a putative disk around a Janis-Newman-Winicour singularity …
We show that, in principle, a slowly evolving gravitationally collapsing perfect fluid cloud can asymptotically settle to a static spherically symmetric equilibrium configuration with a naked singularity at the center. We consider one such asymptotic final configuration with a finite outer radius, and construct a toy model in which it is matched to a Schwarzschild exterior geometry. We examine the properties of circular orbits in this model. We then investigate observational signatures of a thermal accretion disk in this spacetime, comparing them with the signatures expected for a disk around …
In this paper, we construct the rotating Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity spacetime using Newman-Janis Algorithm (NJA). We analyse NJA with and without complexification methods and find that the energy conditions do satisfied when we skip the complexification step. We study the shadows cast by rotating JNW naked singularity and compare them with the shadows cast by the Kerr black hole. We find that the shadow of the rotating naked singularity can be distinguished from the shadow of the Kerr black hole. While we analyse the precession of timelike bound orbits in rotating JNW spacet…
Naked singularities are hypothetical astrophysical objects, characterized by a gravitational singularity without an event horizon. Penrose has proposed a conjecture, according to which there exists a cosmic censor who forbids the occurrence of naked singularities. Distinguishing between astrophysical black holes and naked singularities is a major challenge for present day observational astronomy. A possibility of differentiating naked singularities from black holes is through the comparative study of thin accretion disks properties around rotating naked singularities and Kerr-type black holes,…
Naked singularities form during the gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous matter clouds. The final nature of the singularity depends on the initial conditions of the matter properties and types of matter profiles. These naked singularities can also be divided into two types: null-like and timelike singularities. The spacelike singularity of the Schwarzschild black hole can be distinguished from the null and timelike naked singularity spacetimes. In light of this, we investigate the precession of timelike bound orbits in the null naked singularity spacetime, as well as tidal force effects and…
We analyze the behaviour of geodesic motion of test particles in the spacetime of a specific class of axially symmetric static vacuum solutions to the Einstein equations, hereafter referred to as linearized multipole solution (LM). We discuss about its suitability to describe a quasi-spherical spacetime. The existence of an ISCO (innermost stable circular orbit) very close to the (singular) horizon of the source, is established. The existence of such stable orbit, inner than the one of the Schwarzschild metric, as well as the appearance of a splitting in the admissible region of circular orbit…
We derive here the orbit equations of particles in naked singularity spacetimes, namely the Bertrand (BST) and Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) geometries, and for the Schwarzschild black hole. We plot the orbit equations and find the Perihelion precession of the orbits of particles in the BST and JNW spacetimes and compare these with the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. We find and discuss different distinguishing properties in the effective potentials and orbits of particle in BST, JNW and Schwarzschild spacetimes, and the particle trajectories are shown for the matching of BST with an externa…
In this paper, we first investigate some aspects of frame dragging in strong gravity. The computations are carried out for the Kerr black hole and for the rotating Janis-Newman-Winicour solution, that is known to have a naked singularity on a surface at a finite radius. For the Kerr metric, a few interesting possibilities of gyroscope precession frequency, as measured by a Copernican observer outside the ergoregion, are pointed out. It is shown that for certain angular velocities of a stationary observer, this frequency might vanish exactly, close to the ergoregion. Similar computations are re…

We study the gravitational deflection of relativistic massive particles by Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) spacetimes (also known as a rotating source with a surface-like naked singularity), and a rotating Kerr-like wormholes. Based on the recent article [K. Jusufi, Phys. Rev. D 98, 064017 (2018)], we extend some of these results by exploring the effects of naked singularity and Kerr-like objects on the deflection of particles. We start by introducing coordinate transformation leading to an isotropic line element which gives the refraction index of light for the corresponding optical medias. On th…
In this paper, we derive the solutions of orbit equations for a class of naked singularity spacetimes, and compare these with timelike orbits, that is, particle trajectories in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. The Schwarzschild and naked singularity spacetimes considered here can be formed as end state of a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a matter cloud. We find and compare the perihelion precession of the particle orbits in the naked singularity spacetime with that of the Schwarzschild black hole. We then discuss different distinguishable physical properties of timelike…
A rotating black hole causes the spin-axis of a nearby pulsar to precess due to geodetic and gravitomagnetic frame-dragging effects. The aim of our theoretical work here is to explore how this spin-precession can modify the rate at which pulses are received on earth. Towards this end, we obtain the complete evolution of the beam vectors of pulsars moving on equatorial circular orbits in the Kerr spacetime, relative to asymptotic fixed observers. We proceed to establish that such spin-precession effects can significantly modify observed pulse frequencies and, in specific, we find that the obser…
Gravitational waves from coalescing binary black holes encode the evolution of their spins prior to merger. In the post-Newtonian regime and on the precession timescale, this evolution has one of three morphologies, with the spins either librating around one of two fixed points ("resonances") or circulating freely. In this work we perform full parameter estimation on resonant binaries with fixed masses and spin magnitudes, changing three parameters: a conserved "projected effective spin" $ξ$ and resonant family $ΔΦ=0,π$ (which uniquely label the source), the inclination $θ_{JN}$ of the binary'…
Astrometric observations of S-stars provide a unique opportunity to probe the nature of Sagittarius-A* (Sgr-A*). In view of this, it has become important to understand the nature and behavior of timelike bound trajectories of particles around a massive central object. It is known now that whereas the Schwarzschild black hole does not allow the negative precession for the S-stars, the naked singularity spacetimes can admit the positive as well as negative precession for the bound timelike orbits. In this context, we study the perihelion precession of a test particle in the Kerr spacetime geomet…

We study the optical appearance of a thin accretion disk around the strongly naked static Janis-Newman-Winicour singularity. The solution does not possess a photon sphere, which results in the formation of a complex structure of bright rings in the central region of the disk image. Such structure is absent in the case of the Schwarzschild black hole with a thin accretion disk, where instead of the image we observe the black hole shadow. Some of the rings emit with the maximal observable radiation flux from the accretion disk, and should be experimentally detectable. Thus, this qualitatively ne…
While the event horizon of a black hole could cast a shadow that was observed recently, a central singularity without horizon could also give rise to such a feature. This leaves us with a question on the nature of the supermassive black holes at the galactic centers, and if they admit an event horizon necessarily. We point out that observations of motion of stars around the galactic center should give a clear idea of the nature of this central supermassive object. We examine and discuss here recent developments that indicate intriguing behavior of the star motions that could possibly distingui…
If binary black holes form following the successive core collapses of sufficiently massive binary stars, precessional dynamics may align their spins $\mathbf S_1$ and $\mathbf S_2$ and the orbital angular momentum $\mathbf L$ into a plane in which they jointly precess about the total angular momentum $\mathbf J$. These spin orientations are known as spin-orbit resonances since $\mathbf S_1$, $\mathbf S_2$, and $\mathbf L$ all precess at the same frequency to maintain their planar configuration. Two families of such spin-orbit resonances exist, alike in dignity but differentiated by whether the…

In this work we have investigated various properties of a spinning gyroscope in the context of Horndeski theories. In particular, we have focused on two specific situations --- (a) when the gyroscope follows a geodesic trajectory and (b) when it is endowed with an acceleration. In both these cases, besides developing the basic formalism, we have also applied the same to understand the motion of a spinning gyroscope in various static and spherically symmetric spacetimes pertaining to Horndeski theories. Starting with the Schwarzschild de-Sitter spacetime as a warm up exercise, we have presented…
We consider spherically symmetric black holes with minimally coupled scalar fields and concentrate our attention on asymptotically flat self-gravitating configurations having the event horizons located at radii much smaller than $2m$. We think of such configurations as rigorous mathematical models of the gravitating objects, surrounded by dark matter, in the centres of normal galaxies. It turns out that the radius of the event horizon of a scalar field black hole always less than the Schwarzschild radius of vacuum black hole of the same mass and can be arbitrary close to zero. In astronomical …

We consider the periapsis shifts in dark matter distribution with a dense core. We model the dark matter distribution as an isotropic gas sphere, the Emden polytropic sphere of index 5 in general relativity. This model has a parameter range where all the energy conditions are satisfied in the entire region. Within the parameter range, the asymptotic analysis for stellar motion allows us to identify two competing effects on the bounded motion: the general-relativistic effect and a local-density effect of matter. Furthermore, using nearly circular bound orbits, we demonstrate that retrograde per…

Black hole mimickers are possible alternatives to black holes, they would look observationally almost like black holes but would have no horizon. The properties in the near-horizon region where gravity is strong can be quite different for both type of objects, but at infinity it could be difficult to discern black holes from their mimickers. To disentangle this possible confusion, we examine the near-horizon properties, and their connection with far away properties, of some candidates to black mimickers. We study spherically symmetric uncharged or charged but non-extremal objects, as well as s…
Since the initial detection of Gravitational Waves in 2015, 50 candidate events have been reported by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration. As the current generation of detectors move towards their design sensitivity the rate of these detections will increase. The next generation of detectors are likely to have high enough sensitivities that multiple merging binaries will be visible at the same time. In this paper we show that this is likely to happen before the end of the decade, with the move to the LIGO-Voyager detector. We investigate the situation of overlapping Binary-Black-Hole mergers in…
