We show that, in principle, a slowly evolving gravitationally collapsing perfect fluid cloud can asymptotically settle to a static spherically symmetric equilibrium configuration with a naked singularity at the center. We consider one such asymptotic final configuration with a finite outer radius, and construct a toy model in which it is matched to a Schwarzschild exterior geometry. We examine the properties of circular orbits in this model. We then investigate observational signatures of a thermal accretion disk in this spacetime, comparing them with the signatures expected for a disk around a black hole of the same mass. Several notable differences emerge. A disk around the naked singularity is much more luminous than one around an equivalent black hole. Also, the disk around the naked singularity has a spectrum with a high frequency power law segment that carries a major fraction of the total luminosity. Thus, at least some naked singularities can, in principle, be distinguished observationally from black holes of the same mass. We discuss possible implications of these results.
By imposing suitable junction conditions on a space-like hyper-surface, we obtain a two-parameter family of possible static configurations from gravitational collapse. These exemplify a new class of naked singularities. We show that these admit a consistent description via a two-fluid model, one of which might be dust. We then study lensing and accretion disk properties of our solution and point out possible differences with black hole scenarios. The distinctive features of our solution, compared to the existing naked singularity solutions in the literature are discussed.
We discuss the existence of maximum forces in 3+1 dimensional spacetimes and show that the existence of a mass-independent maximum force does not occur in general relativity in spaces of more than three dimensions. Instead, the maximum force increases with the masses, M, of merging objects as M to the power (N-3)/(N-2) and allows unbounded gravitational forces to occur. This suggests that naked singularities can arise in more than three dimensions because they are unprotected by a maximum force at the horizon surface. This creates a new perspective on the expectation of naked singularities in …
Low energy effective action of bosonic string theory possesses a kind of singular static solution which can be interpreted as a naked singularity. Based on the Hohm-Zwiebach action, the naked singularities could be smoothed out by introducing the complete $α^{\prime}$ corrections of string theory. In this paper, we present two sets of non-singular solutions, which are also regular everywhere in the Einstein frame. In the perturbative region $α^{\prime}\to0$, the solutions reduce to the perturbative results. Our result provides extra evidence for weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) from a …
In this paper, we derive general conditions for a shadow to occur, without a photon sphere in a spacetime, caused by central nulllike or timelike naked singularities. Using these conditions, we propose classes of spacetimes which have nulllike and timelike naked singularities at the center, and that fulfill these `shadow without photon sphere' conditions. Considering additional asymptotically flat conditions, we show that, for a fixed Schwarzschild mass, the timelike naked singularities can cast a shadow of a size that is equal to, greater or smaller, than the size of a black hole shadow. On t…
Quantum-mechanical motion of a half-spin particle was examined in the axially symmetric field of static naked singularities formed by mass distribution with quadrupole moment (q-metric). The analysis was performed by means of the method of effective potentials of the Dirac equation generalized for the case when radial and angular variables are not separated. As $-1<q<q_{lim}, |q_{lim}|<<1 $ the naked singularities do not except the existence of stationary bound states of Dirac particles for a prolate mass distribution in the q-metric along the axial axis. For the oblate mass distribution, the …
We study the critical values of the quintessential and spin parameters, to distinguish a rotating Kiselev black hole (RKBH) from a naked singularity. For any value of the dimensionless quintessential parameter $ω_{q} \in (-1, -1/3)$, when increasing the value of quintessential parameter $α$, the size of the event horizon increases, whereas the size of the outer horizon decreases. We then study the spin precession of a test gyroscope attached to a stationary observer in this spacetime. Using the spin precessions we differentiate black holes from naked singularities. If the precession frequency …
We investigate a vacuum decay around an over-spinning naked singularity by using the Israel junction condition. We found that if the Higgs field develops the second minimum at higher energy scale, a spinning small-mass naked singularity could cause the vacuum decay around it within the cosmic age. An event horizon may form around the singularity due to the angular momentum transport from the singularity to a vacuum bubble wall. The newly formed event horizon leads to the increase of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, which contributes to the enhancement of the vacuum decay rate. We conclude that smal…
In order to show that there exists a relation between the validity of the Weyl entropy and the cosmic censorship hypothesis, we discuss the relation between naked singularities and the gravitational entropy estimator using the Weyl invariant. We look at the examples of Vaidya and Tolman-Bondi spacetimes in asymptotically flat and de Sitter spacetime and look at Weyl entropy as a possible indicator of the prohibition of naked singularities.
In this paper, we analyze the deflection angle of light by Brane-Dicke wormhole in the weak field limit approximation to find the effect of the Brane-Dicke coupling parameter on the weak gravitation lensing. For this purpose, we consider new geometric techniques, i.e., Gauss-Bonnet theorem and optical geometry in order to calculate the deflection angle. Furthermore, we verify our results by considering the most familiar geodesic technique. Moreover, we establish the quantum corrected metric of Brane-Dicke wormhole by replacing the classical geodesic with Bohmian trajectories, whose matter sour…
Repulsive gravity is a well known characteristic of naked singularities. In this work, we explore light surfaces and find new effects of repulsive gravity. We compare Kerr naked singularities with the corresponding black hole counterparts and find certain structures that are identified as horizon remnants. We argue that these features might be significant for the comprehension of processes that lead to the formation or eventually destruction of black hole Killing horizons. These features can be detected by observing photon orbits, particularly close to the rotation axis, which can be used to d…
We investigate the occurrence of naked singularities, local and global, in the incoming Vaidya spacetimes with zero initial mass. While it is well-known that these spacetimes admit locally and globally naked singularities, we demonstrate that globally naked singularities are significantly more common than is stressed in the literature, being generic in a natural topology on this collection of spacetimes. A heuristic consequence of the results is that the slow accumulation of mass is both necessary and sufficient for both types of naked singularities in these spacetimes. We demonstrate that the…
We study a Kerr-like black hole and naked singularity in perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). The critical value of spin parameter $a_c$ is presented to differentiate the black hole from naked singularity. It is seen that for any fixed value of dark matter parameter $α$ the rotating object is black hole if $a\leq a_c$ and naked singularity if $a>a_c$. Also for $-2\leqα<2/3$ the size of the black hole horizons decrease whereas for $2/3<α$ it increases. We also study spin precession frequency of a test gyroscope attached to stationary observer to differentiate a black hole from naked singularity in…
