We investigate a vacuum decay around an over-spinning naked singularity by using the Israel junction condition. We found that if the Higgs field develops the second minimum at higher energy scale, a spinning small-mass naked singularity could cause the vacuum decay around it within the cosmic age. An event horizon may form around the singularity due to the angular momentum transport from the singularity to a vacuum bubble wall. The newly formed event horizon leads to the increase of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, which contributes to the enhancement of the vacuum decay rate. We conclude that small-mass naked singularities may be hidden by the event horizon within the cosmological time.
Static spherically symmetric solutions of 4d Brans-Dicke theory include a set of naked singularity solutions. Dilatonic effects near the naked singularities result in either a shielding or an antishielding effect from intruding massive test particles. One result is that for a portion of the solution parameter space, no communication between the singularity and a distant observer is possible via massive particle exchanges. Kaluza-Klein gravity is considered as a special case.
We discuss stationary supersymmetric bosonic configurations of the Einstein-Maxwell theory embedded in $N=2$ supergravity. Some of these configurations, including the Kerr-Newman solutions with $m = |q|$ and arbitrary angular momentum per unit mass $a$, exhibit naked singularities. However, $N=2$ supergravity has trace anomaly. The nonvanishing anomalous energy-momentum tensor of these Kerr-Newman solutions violates a consistency condition for a configuration to admit unbroken supersymmetry. Thus, the trace anomaly of this theory prevents the supersymmetric solutions from exhibiting naked sing…
We show that algebraically special modes lead to the instability of naked singularity spacetimes with negative mass. Four-dimensional negative-mass Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes are unstable. Stability of the Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetime depends on boundary conditions. We briefly discuss the generalization of these results to charged and rotating singularities.
We investigate thermodynamic properties of two types of asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes: black holes and singular scalar field spacetimes. We describe the possibility that thermodynamic phase transitions can transform one spacetime into another, suggesting that black holes can radiate to naked singularities.
Naked singularities are hypothetical astrophysical objects, characterized by a gravitational singularity without an event horizon. Penrose has proposed a conjecture, according to which there exists a cosmic censor who forbids the occurrence of naked singularities. Distinguishing between astrophysical black holes and naked singularities is a major challenge for present day observational astronomy. A possibility of differentiating naked singularities from black holes is through the comparative study of thin accretion disks properties around rotating naked singularities and Kerr-type black holes,…
We discuss the existence of maximum forces in 3+1 dimensional spacetimes and show that the existence of a mass-independent maximum force does not occur in general relativity in spaces of more than three dimensions. Instead, the maximum force increases with the masses, M, of merging objects as M to the power (N-3)/(N-2) and allows unbounded gravitational forces to occur. This suggests that naked singularities can arise in more than three dimensions because they are unprotected by a maximum force at the horizon surface. This creates a new perspective on the expectation of naked singularities in …
We study the evolution of bubble spacetimes in vacuum and electrovac scenarios by numerical means. We find strong evidence against the formation of naked singularities in (i) scenarios with negative masses displaying initially collapsing conditions and (ii) scenarios with negative masses displaying initially expanding conditions, previously reported to give rise to such singularities. Additionally, we show that the presence of strong gauge fields implies that an initially collapsing bubble bounces back and expands. By fine-tuning the strength of the gauge field we find that the solution approa…
We study the linearised stability of the nakedly singular negative mass Schwarzschild solution against gravitational perturbations. There is a one parameter family of possible boundary conditions at the singularity. We give a precise criterion for stability depending on the boundary condition. We show that one particular boundary condition is physically preferred and show that the spacetime is stable with this boundary condition.
We study singularities which can form in a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a general matter field obeying weak energy condition. We show that no energy can reach an outside observer from a null naked singularity. That means they will not be a serious threat to the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture (CCC). For the timelike naked singularities, where only the central shell gets singular, the redshift is always finite and they can in principle, carry energy to a faraway observer. Hence for proving or disproving CCC the study of timelike naked singularities will be more important. Our re…
Low energy effective action of bosonic string theory possesses a kind of singular static solution which can be interpreted as a naked singularity. Based on the Hohm-Zwiebach action, the naked singularities could be smoothed out by introducing the complete $α^{\prime}$ corrections of string theory. In this paper, we present two sets of non-singular solutions, which are also regular everywhere in the Einstein frame. In the perturbative region $α^{\prime}\to0$, the solutions reduce to the perturbative results. Our result provides extra evidence for weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) from a …
We comment here on the results in Ref [4] that showed naked singularities in dynamical gravitational collapse of inhomogeneous dust to be stable but non-generic. The definition of genericity used there is reconsidered. We point out that genericity in terms of an open set, with a positive measure defined suitably on the space of initial data, is physically more appropriate compared to the dynamical systems theory definition used in [4] which makes both black holes and naked singularities non-generic as collapse outcomes.
We use the Dirac equation coupled to a background metric to examine what happens to quantum mechanical observables like the probability density and the radial current in the vicinity of a naked singularity of the Reissner-Nordström type. We find that the wave function of the Dirac particle is regular in the point of the singularity. We show that the probability density is exactly zero at the singularity reflecting quantum-mechanically the repulsive nature of the naked singularity. Furthermore, the surface integral of the radial current over a sphere in the vicinity of the naked singularity tur…
It is shown that for a general nonstatic spherically symmetric metric of the Kerr-Schild class several energy-momentum complexes give the same energy distribution as in the Penrose prescription, obtained by Tod. This result is useful for investigating the Seifert conjecture for naked singularities. The naked singularity forming in the Vaidya null dust collapse supports the Seifert conjecture. Further, an example and a counterexample to this conjecture are presented in the Einstein massless scalar theory.
In this work we study collapse of a general matter in a most general spacetime i.e., a spacetime with any matter and without (assuming) any symmetry. We show that the energy is completely trapped inside the null singularity and therefore they cannot be experimentally observed. This most general result implies, there is no physical significance of the null naked singularities irrespective of their existence. This conclusion strongly supports the essence of cosmic censorship hypothesis.
Brane-world singularities are analysed, emphasizing the case of supergravity in singular spaces where the singularity puzzle is naturally resolved. These naked singularities are either time-like or null, corresponding to the finite or infinite amount of conformal time that massless particles take in order to reach them. Quantum mechanically we show that the brane-world naked singularities are inconsistent. Indeed we find that time-like singularities are not wave-regular, so the time-evolution of wave packets is not uniquely defined in their vicinity, while null singularities absorb incoming ra…
It is shown that gauged nonlinear sigma models can be always deformed by terms proportional to the field strength of the gauge fields (nonminimal gauging). These deformations can be interpreted as perturbations, by marginal operators, of conformal coset models. When applied to the SL(2,R)*SU(2)/[U(1)*U(1)] WZWN model, a large class of four-dimensional curved spacetime backgrounds are obtained. In particular, a naked singularity may form at a time when the volume of the universe is different from zero.
Jacobson and Sotiriou showed that rotating black holes could be spun-up past the extremal limit by the capture of non-spinning test bodies, if one neglects radiative and self-force effects. This would represent a violation of the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture in four-dimensional, asymptotically flat spacetimes. We show that for some of the trajectories giving rise to naked singularities, radiative effects can be neglected. However, for these orbits the conservative self-force is important, and seems to have the right sign to prevent the formation of naked singularities.
We study the conditions for the existence of black holes that can be produced in colliders at TeV-scale if the space-time is higher dimensional. On employing the microcanonical picture, we find that their life-times strongly depend on the details of the model. If the extra dimensions are compact (ADD model), microcanonical deviations from thermality are in general significant near the fundamental TeV mass and tiny black holes decay more slowly than predicted by the canonical expression, but still fast enough to disappear almost instantaneously. However, with one warped extra dimension (RS mode…
Quantum-mechanical motion of a half-spin particle was examined in the axially symmetric field of static naked singularities formed by mass distribution with quadrupole moment (q-metric). The analysis was performed by means of the method of effective potentials of the Dirac equation generalized for the case when radial and angular variables are not separated. As $-1<q<q_{lim}, |q_{lim}|<<1 $ the naked singularities do not except the existence of stationary bound states of Dirac particles for a prolate mass distribution in the q-metric along the axial axis. For the oblate mass distribution, the …
This article gives an elementary review of gravitational collapse and the cosmic censorship hypothesis. Known models of collapse resulting in the formation of black holes and naked singularities are summarized. These models, when taken together, suggest that the censorship hypothesis may not hold in classical general relativity. The nature of the quantum processes that take place near a naked singularity, and their possible implication for observations, is briefly discussed.
By imposing suitable junction conditions on a space-like hyper-surface, we obtain a two-parameter family of possible static configurations from gravitational collapse. These exemplify a new class of naked singularities. We show that these admit a consistent description via a two-fluid model, one of which might be dust. We then study lensing and accretion disk properties of our solution and point out possible differences with black hole scenarios. The distinctive features of our solution, compared to the existing naked singularity solutions in the literature are discussed.
We model the massive dark object at the center of the Galaxy as a Schwarzschild black hole as well as Janis-Newman-Winicour naked singularities, characterized by the mass and scalar charge parameters, and study gravitational lensing (particularly time delay, magnification centroid, and total magnification) by them. We find that the lensing features are qualitatively similar (though quantitatively different) for the Schwarzschild black holes, weakly naked, and marginally strongly naked singularities. However, the lensing characteristics of strongly naked singularities are qualitatively very dif…
We compute the Zero Point Energy (ZPE) induced by a naked singularity with the help of a reformulation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. A variational approach is used for the calculation with Gaussian Trial Wave Functionals. The one loop contribution of the graviton to the ZPE is extracted keeping under control the UltraViolet divergences by means of a distorted gravitational field. Two examples of distortion are taken under consideration: Gravity's Rainbow and Noncommutative Geometry. Surprisingly we find that the ZPE is no more singular when we approach the singularity.
Recently, the possibility was pointed out by one of the present authors and his collaborators that an effective naked singularity referred to as "a visible border of spacetime" is generated by high-energy particle collision in the context of large extra dimensions or TeV-scale gravity. In this paper, we investigate the particle creation by a naked singularity in general dimensions, while adopting a model in which a marginally naked singularity forms in the collapse of a homothetic lightlike pressureless fluid. We find that the spectrum deviates from that of Hawking radiation due to scattering …
In this paper, we analyze the deflection angle of light by Brane-Dicke wormhole in the weak field limit approximation to find the effect of the Brane-Dicke coupling parameter on the weak gravitation lensing. For this purpose, we consider new geometric techniques, i.e., Gauss-Bonnet theorem and optical geometry in order to calculate the deflection angle. Furthermore, we verify our results by considering the most familiar geodesic technique. Moreover, we establish the quantum corrected metric of Brane-Dicke wormhole by replacing the classical geodesic with Bohmian trajectories, whose matter sour…
We investigate here the particle acceleration by Kerr naked singularities. We consider a collision between particles dropped in from infinity at rest, which follow geodesic motion in the equatorial plane, with their angular momenta in an appropriate finite range of values. When an event horizon is absent, an initially infalling particle turns back as an outgoing particle, when it has the angular momentum in an appropriate range of values, which then collides with infalling particles. When the collision takes place close to what would have been the event horizon in the extremal case, the center…
We discuss generalizations of the recent theorem by Dafermos (hep-th/0403033) forbidding a certain class of naked singularities in the spherical collapse of a scalar field. Employing techniques similar to the ones Dafermos used, we consider extending the theorem (1) to higher dimensions, (2) by including more general matter represented by a stress-energy tensor satisfying certain assumptions, and (3) by replacing the spherical geometry by a toroidal or higher genus (locally hyperbolic) one. We show that the extension to higher dimensions and a more general topology is straightforward; on the o…
We investigate what are the key physical features that cause the development of a naked singularity, rather than a black hole, as the end-state of spherical gravitational collapse. We show that sufficiently strong shearing effects near the singularity delay the formation of the apparent horizon. This exposes the singularity to an external observer, in contrast to a black hole, which is hidden behind an event horizon due to the early formation of an apparent horizon.
By utilizing non-standard slicings of 5-dimensional Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-AdS manifolds based on isotropic coordinates, we generate static and spherically symmetric braneworld spacetimes containing shell-like naked null singularities. For planar slicings, we find that the brane-matter sourcing the solution is a perfect fluid with an exotic equation of state and a pressure singularity where the brane crosses the bulk horizon. From a relativistic point of view, such a singularity is required to maintain matter infinitesimally above the surface of a black hole. From the point of view of…
A brief review is given of three recent results concerning classical solutions of gravitational theories: (1) With asymptotically anti de Sitter boundary conditions, there are matter theories satisfying the positive energy theorem which violate cosmic censorship. (2) Despite supersymmetry, there are solutions to N=8 supergravity in which the total gravitational energy is arbitrarily negative. This theory can also violate cosmic censorship. (3) A large class of supersymmetric compactifications (including all simply connected Calabi-Yau manifolds) have solutions with negative four dimensional ef…
We consider, in 5 dimensions, the low energy effective action induced by heterotic string theory including the leading stringy correction of order alpha'. In the presence of a single positive tension flat brane, and an infinite extra dimension, we present a particular class of solutions with finite 4-dimensional Planck scale and no naked singularity. A ``self-tuning'' mechanism for relaxing the cosmological constant on the brane, without a drastic fine tuning of parameters, is discussed in this context. Our solutions are distinct from the standard self-tuning solutions discussed in the context…
A sufficiently massive collapsing star will end its life as a spacetime singularity. The nature of the Hawking radiation emitted during collapse depends critically on whether the star's boundary conditions are such as would lead to the eventual formation of a black hole or, alternatively, to the formation of a naked singularity. This latter possibility is not excluded by the singularity theorems. We discuss the nature of the Hawking radiation emitted in each case. We justify the use of Bogoliubov transforms in the presence of a Cauchy horizon and show that if spacetime is assumed to terminate …
We investigate here the genericity and stability aspects for naked singularities and black holes that arise as the final states for a complete gravitational collapse of a spherical massive matter cloud. The form of the matter considered is a general Type I matter field, which includes most of the physically reasonable matter fields such as dust, perfect fluids and such other physically interesting forms of matter widely used in gravitation theory. We first study here in some detail the effects of small pressure perturbations in an otherwise pressure-free collapse scenario, and examine how a co…
We give observations about dualities where one of the dual theories is geometric. These are illustrated with a duality between the simple harmonic oscillator and a topological field theory. We then discuss the Wilson loop in the context of the AdS/CFT duality. We show that the Wilson loop calculation for certain asymptotically AdS scalar field spacetimes with naked singularities gives results qualitatively similar to that for the AdS black hole. In particular, it is apparent that (dimensional) metric parameters in the singular spacetimes permit a ``thermal screening'' interpretation for the qu…
We consider the question here whether the proposed electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational wave signals in binary black hole coalescence may be due to the appearance of a `short lived' naked singularity during the merger. We point out that the change in topology that the spacetime undergoes during the merger can cause the appearance of a naked singularity. In case some matter, in the form of a small accretion disk, is present in the surroundings of the black hole system then the emitted luminosity during the merger would allow to distinguish the scenario where the naked singularity fo…
Roughly speaking, naked singularities are singularities that may be seen by timelike observers. The Cosmic Censorship conjecture forbids their existence by stating that a reasonable system of energy will not, under reasonable conditions, collapse into a naked singularity. There are however many (classical) counter-examples to this conjecture in the literature. We propose a defense of the conjecture through the quantum theory. We will show that the Hawking effect and the accompanying back reaction, when consistently applied to naked singularities in two dimensional models of dilaton gravity wit…
We analytically investigate the pertubative effects of a quantum conformally-coupled scalar field on rotating (2+1)-dimensional black holes and naked singularities. In both cases we obtain the quantum-backreacted metric analytically. In the black hole case, we explore the quantum corrections on different regions of relevance for a rotating black hole geometry. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the ergosphere, as well as to a reduction of the angular velocity compared to their corresponding unperturbed values. Quantum corrections also give rise to t…
We show that, in principle, a slowly evolving gravitationally collapsing perfect fluid cloud can asymptotically settle to a static spherically symmetric equilibrium configuration with a naked singularity at the center. We consider one such asymptotic final configuration with a finite outer radius, and construct a toy model in which it is matched to a Schwarzschild exterior geometry. We examine the properties of circular orbits in this model. We then investigate observational signatures of a thermal accretion disk in this spacetime, comparing them with the signatures expected for a disk around …
Necessary conditions are proposed for the admissibility of singular classical solutions with 3+1-dimensional Poincare invariance to five-dimensional gravity coupled to scalars. Finite temperature considerations and examples from AdS/CFT support the conjecture that the scalar potential must remain bounded above for a solution to be physical. Having imposed some restrictions on naked singularities allows us to comment on a recent proposal for solving the cosmological constant problem.
We study the evolution of the Gregory-Laflamme instability for black strings in global AdS spacetime, and investigate the CFT dual of the formation of a bulk naked singularity. Using an effective theory in the large D limit, we uncover a rich variety of dynamical behaviour, depending on the thickness of the string and on initial perturbations. These include: large inflows of horizon generators from the asymptotic boundary (a `black tsunami'); a pinch-off of the horizon that likely reveals a naked singularity; and competition between these two behaviours, such as a nakedly singular pinch-off th…
We compare shadows cast by Schwarzschild black holes with those produced by two classes of naked singularities that result from gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric matter. The latter models consist of an interior naked singularity spacetime restricted to radii $r\leq R_b$, matched to Schwarzschild spacetime outside the boundary radius $R_b$. While a black hole always has a photon sphere and always casts a shadow, we find that the naked singularity models have photon spheres only if a certain parameter $M_0$ that characterizes these models satisfies $M_0\geq 2/3$, or equivalently, i…
We consider the Penrose process near the naked singularity in the Reissner-Nordström metric. Particle 0 falls from infinity and decays to two fragments at some point $r_{0}$. We show that the energy extraction due to this process can be indefinitely large in the limit $r_{0}\rightarrow 0$. In doing so, the value of the particle charge can remain bounded, in contrast to the previously known examples of the Penrose process in the electric field with unbounded energy extraction. The effect persists even in the limit of the flat pace-time.
We extend a previous calculation which treated Schwarschild black hole horizons as quantum mechanical objects to the case of a charged, dilaton black hole. We show that for a unique value of the dilaton parameter `a', which is determined by the condition of unitarity of the S matrix, black holes transform at the extremal limit into strings.
Naked singularities appear naturally in dynamically evolving solutions of Einstein equations involving gravitational collapse of radiation, dust and perfect fluids, provided the rate of accretion is less than a critical value. We propose that the gamma-ray bursters (GRBs) are examples of these naked singularity solutions. For illustration, we show that according to solutions involving spherically symmetric collapse of pure radiation field, the energy $E_γ$ and the observed duration $Δt_o$ of a GRB should satisfy, $\frac{E_γ}{Δt_o} \leq 4.5 \times 10^{58} \ f_γ$ erg sec$^{-1}$, $f_γ$ being the …
Adopting the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff formalism, we propose a new analytical solution for a static and spherically symmetric black hole where the cosmological constant is generalized to a non-isotropic Anton-Schmidt fluid acting as a unified dark energy - dark matter source. Our novel result can describe a black hole in energetic equilibrium with the surrounding universe. We thus investigate the interplay between the mass of the black hole and the parameters of the Anton-Schmidt equation of state, and physically interpret the solution as a family of space-time metrics that may describe both …
In the Comment on "Can accretion disk properties observationally distinguish black holes from naked singularities?", by Bertrand Chauvineau, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 98}, 088501 (2018), the author did show that the metric used in Z. Kovács and T. Harko, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 82}, 124047 (2010), and initially introduced in K. D. Krori and D. R. Bhattacharjee, J. Math. Phys. \textbf{23}, 637 (1982) and K. K. Nandi, P. M. Alsing, J. C. Evans, and T. B. Nayak, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{63}, 084027 (2001), does not satisfy the Einstein gravitational field equations with a minimally coupled scalar field. In our rep…
We investigate gravitational effects of extreme, non-extreme and ultra- extreme domain walls in the presence of a dilaton field. The dilaton is a scalar field without self-interaction that couples to the matter po- tential that is responsible for the formation of the wall. Motivated by superstring and supergravity theories, we consider both an exponential dilaton coupling (parametrized with the coupling constant alpha and the case where the coupling is self-dual, i.e. it has an extremum for a fi- nite value of the dilaton. For an exponential dilaton coupling, extreme walls (which are static pl…
We find new static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat vacuum solutions without horizon in Starobinsky's quadratic f(R) gravity. We systematically classify these solutions by an asymptotic analysis around the origin and find seven different integer Frobenius families. We numerically solve the exact equations of motion by a double-shooting method and specify boundary conditions by matching the numerical solution to the analytic solution of the linearised field equations in the weak field regime. We find that all integer Frobenius families can be connected to asymptotically flat solu…
It has recently been proposed that the accreting collapsed object GRO J1655--40 could contain a non-zero gravitomagnetic monopole, and hence could be better described with the more general Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime, instead of the Kerr spacetime. This makes the KTN spacetime astrophysically relevant. In this paper, we study properties of various circular orbits in the KTN spacetime, and find the locations of circular photon orbits (CPOs) and innermost-stable-circular-orbits (ISCOs). Such orbits are important to interpret the observed X-ray spectral and timing properties of accreting collap…
We study the propagation of classical electromagnetic waves on the simplest four-dimensional spherically symmetric metric with a dilaton background field. Solutions to the relevant equations are obtained perturbatively in a parameter which measures the strength of the dilaton field (hence parameterizes the departure from Schwarzschild geometry). The loss of energy from outgoing modes is estimated as a back-scattering process against the dilaton background, which would affect the luminosity of stars with a dilaton field. The radiation emitted by a freely falling point-like source on such a back…
We present a complete study of the geodesics around naked singularities in AdS$_3$, the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. These stationary spacetimes, characterized by two conserved charges --mass and angular momentum--, are obtained through identifications along spacelike Killing vectors with a fixed point. They are interpreted as massive spinning point particles, and can be viewed as three-dimensional analogues of cosmic strings in four spacetime dimensions. The geodesic equations are completely integrated and the solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. We classif…
We analytically investigate backreaction by a quantum scalar field on two rotating Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) geometries: that of a black hole and that of a naked singularity. In the former case, we explore the quantum effects on various regions of relevance for a rotating black hole space-time. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the radius of the ergosphere, and to a reduction of the angular velocity, compared to the unperturbed values. Furthermore, they give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no e…
We treat the horizons of charged, dilaton black extended objects as quantum mechanical objects. We show that the S matrix for such an object can be written in terms of a p-brane-like action. The requirements of unitarity of the S matrix and positivity of the p-brane tension equivalent severely restrict the number of space-time dimensions and the allowed values of the dilaton parameter a. Generally, black objects transform at the extremal limit into p-branes.
This is a summary of a lecture I gave at the workshop on dynamics and thermodynamics of black holes and naked singularities at Politecnico Milano. It is directed to a non-expert audience and reviews several ways in which string theory accounts for black hole microstates. In particular, I give an elementary introduction to the correspondence principle by Horowitz/Polchinski, to the state counting for the three-charge black hole by Strominger and Vafa, and to the recent proposal by Mathur et al. concerning the gravity description of black hole microstates. The second part of the lecture is dedic…
