Let $μ$ be an $α$-dimensional probability measure. We prove new upper and lower bounds on the decay rate of hyperbolic averages of the Fourier transform $\widehatμ$. More precisely, if $\mathbb{H}$ is a truncated hyperbolic paraboloid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ we study the optimal $β$ for which $$\int_{\mathbb{H}} |\hatμ(Rξ)|^2 \, d σ(ξ)\leq C(α, μ) R^{-β}$$ for all $R > 1$. Our estimates for $β$ depend on the minimum between the number of positive and negative principal curvatures of $\mathbb{H}$; if this number is as large as possible our estimates are sharp in all dimensions.
We prove the existence of functions that extremize the endpoint $L^2$ to $L^4$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the one-sheeted hyperboloid in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^4$ and that, taking symmetries into consideration, any extremizing sequence has a subsequence that converges to an extremizer.
We prove that in dimensions $d \geq 3$, the non-endpoint, Lorentz-invariant $L^2 \to L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the $d$-dimensional hyperboloid $\mathbb{H}^d \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ possesses maximizers. The analogous result had been previously established in dimensions $d=1,2$ using the convolution structure of the inequality at the lower endpoint (an even integer); we obtain the generalization by using tools from bilinear restriction theory.
In this note, we continue our research on Fourier restriction for hyperbolic surfaces, by studying local perturbations of the hyperbolic paraboloid $z=xy,$ which are of the form $z=xy+h(y),$ where $h(y)$ is a smooth function of finite type. Our results build on previous joint work in which we have studied the case $h(y)=y^3/3$ by means of the bilinear method. As it turns out, the understanding of that special case becomes also crucial for the treatment of arbitrary finite type perturbation terms $h(y).$
The $L^2 \to L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the $d$-dimensional hyperboloid $\mathbb{H}^d \subset \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ holds provided $6 \leq p < \infty$, if $d=1$, and $2(d+2)/d \leq p\leq 2(d+1)/(d-1)$, if $d\geq2$. Quilodrán recently found the values of the optimal constants in the endpoint cases $(d,p)\in\{(2,4),(2,6),(3,4)\}$ and showed that the inequality does not have extremizers in these cases. In this paper we answer two questions posed by Quilodrán, namely: (i) we find the explicit value of the optimal constant in the endpoint case $(d,p) = (1,6)$ (the remaining endpoint…
We prove global Fourier restriction estimates for elliptic, or two-sheeted, hyperboloids of arbitrary dimension $d \geq 2$, extending recent joint work with Oliveira e Silva and Stovall. Our results are unconditional in the (adjoint) bilinear range, $q > \frac{2(d+3)}{d+1}$, and extend conditionally upon further progress toward the local restriction conjecture for elliptic surfaces.
This is a continuation of the paper "Restriction theorem for Fourier-Dunkl transform I: Cone surface, J. Pseudo-Differ. Oper. Appl. 14(1), Paper No. 5 (2023)", where the authors introduced and studied the Fourier-Dunkl transform on $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The main novelty of this paper is that we here prove Strichartz's restriction theorem for the Fourier-Dunkl transform for certain surfaces, namely, paraboloid, sphere, and hyperboloid and its generalisation to the family of orthonormal functions. Finally, as an application of these restriction theorems, we establish versions of …
For spherical and parabolic averages of the Fourier transform of fractal measures, we obtain new upper bounds on rates of decay by an "intermediate dimension" trick.
We construct $δ$-regular sets with $δ\ge \frac12$ for which the analog of the Bourgain--Dyatlov Fractal Uncertainty Principle fails for the Walsh--Fourier transform.
By considering a Moran-type construction of fractals on $[0,1]$, we show that for any $0\le s\le 1$, there exists some Moran fractal set, which is perfect, with Hausdorff dimension $s$ whose Fourier dimension is zero and it contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions.
Let $\mathbb{H}$ be a $(d-1)$-dimensonal hyperbolic paraboloid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and let $Ef$ be the Fourier extension operator associated to $\mathbb{H},$ with $f$ supported in $B^{d-1}(0,2)$. We prove that $\|Ef\|_{L^p (B(0,R))} \leq C_εR^ε\|f\|_{L^p}$ for all $p \geq \frac{2(d+2)}{d}$ whenever $ \frac{d}{2} \geq m + 1$, where $m$ is the minimum between the number of positive and negative principal curvatures of $\mathbb{H}$. Bilinear restriction estimates for $\mathbb{H}$ proved by S. Lee and Vargas play an important role in our argument.
We study the problem of existence of extremizers for the $L^2$ to $L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequalities on the hyperboloid in dimensions 3 and 4, in which cases $p$ is an even integer. We will use the method developed by Foschi to show that extremizers do not exist.
In a recent paper [Ann. of Math. 189 (2019), 837--861], Du and Zhang proved a fractal Fourier restriction estimate and used it to establish the sharp $L^2$ estimate on the Schrödinger maximal function in $\Bbb R^n$, $n \geq 2$. In this paper, we show that the Du-Zhang estimate is the endpoint of a family of fractal restriction estimates such that each member of the family (other than the original) implies a sharp Kakeya result in $\Bbb R^n$ that is closely related to the polynomial Wolff axioms. We also prove that all the estimates of our family are true in $\Bbb R^2$.
We prove certain $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ bilinear estimates for Fourier extension operators associated to spheres and hyperboloids under the action of the $k$-plane transform. As the estimates are $L^2$-based, they follow from bilinear identities: in particular, these are the analogues of a known identity for paraboloids, and may be seen as higher-dimensional versions of the classical $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$-bilinear identity for Fourier extension operators associated to curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
Suppose $μ$ is an $α$-dimensional fractal measure for some $0<α<n$. Inspired by the results proved by R. Strichartz in 1990, we discuss the $L^p$-asymptotics of the Fourier transform of $fdμ$ by estimating bounds of $$\underset{L\rightarrow\infty}{\liminf}\ \frac{1}{L^k} \int_{|ξ|\leq L}\ |\widehat{fdμ}(ξ)|^pdξ,$$ for $f\in L^p(dμ)$ and $2<p<2n/α$. In a different direction, we prove a Hardy type inequality, that is, $$\int\frac{|f(x)|^p}{(μ(E_x))^{2-p}}dμ(x)\leq C\ \underset{L\rightarrow\infty}{\liminf} \frac{1}{L^{n-α}} \int_{B_L(0)} |\widehat{fdμ}(ξ)|^pdξ$$ where $1\leq p\leq 2$ and $E_x=E\c…
We deal with the restriction phenomenon for the Fourier transform. We prove that each of the restriction conjectures for the sphere, the paraboloid, the elliptic hyperboloid in $\mathbb{R}^n$ implies that for the cone in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We also prove a new restriction estimate for any surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ locally isometric to the plane and of finite type.
We use a restriction theorem for Fourier transforms of fractal measures to study projections onto families of planes in R^3 whose normal directions form nondegenerate curves.
One of the basic questions in harmonic analysis is to study the decay properties of the Fourier transform of measures or distributions supported on thin sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$. When the support is a smooth enough manifold, an almost complete picture is available. One of the early results in this direction is the following: Let $f\in C_c^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $dσ$ be the surface measure on the sphere $S^{n-1}\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. Then $$|\widehat{fdσ}(ξ)|\leq\ C\ (1+|ξ|)^{-\frac{n-1}{2}}.$$ It follows that $\widehat{fdσ}\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for all $p>\frac{2n}{n-1}$. This result can be…
We show that subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ of large enough Hausdorff and Fourier dimension contain polynomial patterns of the form \begin{align*} ( x ,\, x + A_1 y ,\, \dots,\, x + A_{k-1} y ,\, x + A_k y + Q(y) e_n ), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^n,\ y \in \mathbb{R}^m, \end{align*} where $A_i$ are real $n \times m$ matrices, $Q$ is a real polynomial in $m$ variables and $e_n = (0,\dots,0,1)$.
We construct a function that lies in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for every $p \in (1,\infty]$ and whose Fourier transform has no Lebesgue points in a Cantor set of full Hausdorff dimension. We apply Kovač's maximal restriction principle to show that the same full-dimensional set is avoided by any Borel measure satisfying a nontrivial Fourier restriction theorem. As a consequence of a near-optimal fractal restriction theorem of Łaba and Wang, we hence prove a lack of valid relations between the Hausdorff dimension of a set and the range of possible Fourier restriction exponents for measures supported i…
We consider spherical averages of the Fourier transform of fractal measures and improve both the upper and lower bounds on the rate of decay. Maximal estimates with respect to fractal measures are deduced for the Schrödinger and wave equations. This refines the almost everywhere convergence of the solution to its initial datum as time tends to zero. A consequence is that the solution to the wave equation cannot diverge on a $(d-1)$-dimensional manifold if the data belongs to the energy space $\dot{H}^1(\mathbb{R}^d)\times L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$.
We prove some weighted Fourier restriction estimates using polynomial partitioning and refined Strichartz estimates. As application we obtain improved spherical average decay rates of the Fourier transform of fractal measures, and therefore improve the results for the Falconer distance set conjecture in three and higher dimensions.
We prove that if ${\mathcal E} \subset {\Bbb R}^{2d}$, $d \ge 2$, is an Ahlfors-David regular product set of sufficiently large Hausdorff dimension, denoted by $dim_{\mathcal H}({\mathcal E})$, and $ϕ$ is a sufficiently regular function, then the upper Minkowski dimension of the set $$ \{w \in {\mathcal E}: ϕ_l(w)=t_l; 1 \leq l \leq m \}$$ does not exceed $dim_{\mathcal H}({\mathcal E})-m$, in line with the regular value theorem from the elementary differential geometry. Our arguments are based on the mapping properties of the underlying Fourier Integral Operators and are intimately connected …
In this note, we investigate $C^2$ differential images of the homogeneous self-similar measure associated with an IFS $\mathcal{I}=\{ρx+a_j\}_{j=1}^m$ satisfying the strong separation condition and a positive probability vector $\vec{p}$. It is shown that the Fourier transforms of such image measures have power decay for any contractive ratio $ρ\in (0, 1/m)$, any translation vector $\vec{a}=(a_1, \ldots, a_m)$ and probability vector $\vec{p}$, which extends a result of Kaufman on Bernoulli convolutions. Our proof relies on a key combinatorial lemma originated from Erdős, which is important in …
We survey some of our recent results on the geometry of spatially independent martingales, in a more concrete setting that allows for shorter, direct proofs, yet is general enough for several applications and contains the well-known fractal percolation measure. We study self-convolutions and Fourier decay of measures in our class, and present applications of these results to the restriction problem for fractal measures, and the connection between arithmetic structure and Fourier decay.
We establish a version of the fractal uncertainty principle, obtained by Bourgain and Dyatlov in 2016, in higher dimensions. The Fourier support is limited to sets $Y\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ which can be covered by finitely many products of $δ$-regular sets in one dimension, but relative to arbitrary axes. Our results remain true if $Y$ is distorted by diffeomorphisms. Our method combines the original approach by Bourgain and Dyatlov, in the more quantitative 2017 rendition by Jin and Zhang, with Cartan set techniques.
This paper continues work begun in \cite{M1}, in which we introduced a theory of Gowers uniformity norms for singular measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$. There, given a $d$-dimensional measure $μ$, we introduced a $(k+1)d$-dimensional measure $\triangle^kμ$, and developed a Uniformity norm $\|μ\|_{U^k}$ whose $2^k$-th power is equivalent to $\triangle^kμ([0,1]^{d(k+1)}$. In the present work, we introduce a fractal dimension associated to measures $μ$ which we refer to as the $k$th-order Fourier dimension of $μ$. This $k$-th order Fourier dimension is a normalization of the asymptotic decay rate of the…
In the first section we review recent results on the harmonic analysis of fractals generated by iterated function systems with emphasis on spectral duality. Classical harmonic analysis is typically based on groups whereas the fractals are most often not groups. We show that nonetheless those fractals that come from iteration of affine mappings in R^d have a spectral duality which is instead based on approximation and a certain dual affine system on the Fourier transform side. The present work is based on iteration of frame estimates (which have been studied earlier for regions in R^d). Our emp…
We study when Fourier transforms of Gibbs measures of sufficiently nonlinear expanding Markov maps decay at infinity at a polynomial rate. Assuming finite Lyapunov exponent, we reduce this to a nonlinearity assumption, which we verify for the Gauss map using Diophantine analysis. Our approach uses large deviations and additive combinatorics, which combines the earlier works on the Gibbs measures for Gauss map (Jordan-Sahlsten, 2013) and Fractal Uncertainty Principle (Bourgain-Dyatlov, 2017).
We extend classical basis constructions from Fourier analysis to attractors for affine iterated function systems (IFSs). This is of interest since these attractors have fractal features, e.g., measures with fractal scaling dimension. Moreover, the spectrum is then typically quasi-periodic, but non-periodic, i.e., the spectrum is a ``small perturbation'' of a lattice. Due to earlier research on IFSs, there are known results on certain classes of spectral duality-pairs, also called spectral pairs or spectral measures. It is known that some duality pairs are associated with complex Hadamard matri…
Let $0 \leq s \leq 1$, and let $\mathbb{P} := \{(t,t^{2}) \in \mathbb{R}^{2} : t \in [-1,1]\}$. If $K \subset \mathbb{P}$ is a closed set with $\dim_{\mathrm{H}} K = s$, it is not hard to see that $\dim_{\mathrm{H}} (K + K) \geq 2s$. The main corollary of the paper states that if $0 < s < 1$, then adding $K$ once more makes the sum slightly larger: $$\dim_{\mathrm{H}} (K + K + K) \geq 2s + ε, $$ where $ε= ε(s) > 0$. This information is deduced from an $L^{6}$ bound for the Fourier transforms of Frostman measures on $\mathbb{P}$. If $0 < s < 1$, and $μ$ is a Borel measure on $\mathbb{P}$ satisf…
Let $Φ$ be a $C^{1+γ}$ smooth IFS on $\mathbb{R}$, where $γ>0$. We provide mild conditions on the derivative cocycle that ensure that every self conformal measure is supported on points $x$ that are absolutely normal. That is, for integer $p\geq 2$ the sequence $\lbrace p^k x \rbrace_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ equidistributes modulo $1$. We thus extend several state of the art results of Hochman and Shmerkin about the prevalence of normal numbers in fractals. When $Φ$ is self-similar we show that the set of absolutely normal numbers has full Hausdorff dimension in its attractor, unless $Φ$ has an expl…
We show that, for $n\geq 3$, $\lim_{t \to 0} e^{itΔ}f(x) = f(x)$ holds almost everywhere for all $f \in H^s (\mathbb{R}^n)$ provided that $s>\frac{n}{2(n+1)}$. Due to a counterexample by Bourgain, up to the endpoint, this result is sharp and fully resolves a problem raised by Carleson. Our main theorem is a fractal $L^2$ restriction estimate, which also gives improved results on the size of divergence set of Schrödinger solutions, the Falconer distance set problem and the spherical average Fourier decay rates of fractal measures. The key ingredients of the proof include multilinear Kakeya esti…
We obtain an essential spectral gap for a convex co-compact hyperbolic surface $M=Γ\backslash\mathbb H^2$ which depends only on the dimension $δ$ of the limit set. More precisely, we show that when $δ>0$ there exists $\varepsilon_0=\varepsilon_0(δ)>0$ such that the Selberg zeta function has only finitely many zeroes $s$ with $\Re s>δ-\varepsilon_0$. The proof uses the fractal uncertainty principle approach developed by Dyatlov-Zahl [arXiv:1504.06589]. The key new component is a Fourier decay bound for the Patterson-Sullivan measure, which may be of independent interest. This bound uses the fac…
In this paper, we establish Schrödinger maximal estimates associated with the finite type phases \begin{equation*} ϕ(ξ_1,ξ_2):=ξ^m_1+ξ^m_2,\;(ξ_1,ξ_2)\in [0,1]^2, \end{equation*} where $m \geq 4$ is an even number. Following [12], we prove an $L^2$ fractal restriction estimate associated with the surfaces \begin{equation*} F^2_m:=\{(ξ_1,ξ_2,ϕ(ξ_1,ξ_2)):\;(ξ_1,ξ_2)\in [0,1]^2\} \end{equation*} as the main result, which also gives results on the average Fourier decay of fractal measures associated with these surfaces. The key ingredients of the proof include the rescaling technique from [16], Bo…
