In the theory of dilute magnetic impurities in superconductors, the effect of all impurity spin-components is expressed via a single magnetic scattering rate $Γ_\mathrm{m}$. In a more realistic setting, magnetic impurities are anisotropic. In this case, the spatial randomness of three spin-components of impurities gives rise to generally different scattering rates $Γ_i$ ($i=1,2,3$). We explore the effects of anisotropic magnetic impurities on the in-plane critical field in 2D superconductors. We discuss singlet, triplet and parity-mixed order parameters allowed in systems without the inversion center. Also, the addition of a small amount of magnetic impurities may cause singlet to triplet crossovers. In all cases, different components of impurity spin affect the magnetic field -- temperature phase diagram differently. We show that anisotropy of the magnetic impurities can serve as a probe of unconventional triplet or parity-mixed superconductivity.
In this work we consider the influence of potential impurities deposited on top of two-dimensional chiral superconductors. As discovered recently, magnetic impurity lattices on an $s$-wave superconductor may give rise to a rich topological phase diagram. We show that similar mechanism takes place in chiral superconductors decorated by non-magnetic impurities, thus avoiding the delicate issue of magnetic ordering of adatoms. We illustrate the method by presenting the theory of potential impurity lattices embedded on chiral $p$-wave superconductors. While a prerequisite for the topological state…
A field theoretic approach is developed to investigate the profile and spectrum of sub-gap states in a superconductor subject to a weak magnetic impurity potential. Such states are found to be associated with inhomogeneous supersymmetry broken instanton configurations of the action.
We show that a chain of nonmagnetic impurities deposited on a fully gapped two- or three-dimensional superconductor can become a topological one-dimensional superconductor with protected Majorana bound states at its end. A prerequisite is that the pairing potential of the underlying superconductor breaks the spin-rotation symmetry, as it is generically the case in systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. We illustrate this mechanism for a spinless triplet-superconductor p+ip and a time-reversal symmetric Rashba superconductor with a mixture of singlet and triplet pairing. For the latter, we sh…
We analyze the Josephson current in a junction consisting of two superconductors (S) and a ferromagnetic layer (F) for arbitrary impurity concentration. In addition to non-magnetic impurities, we consider also magnetic ones and spin-orbit scattering. In the limit of weak proximity effect we solve the linearized Eilenberger equation and derive an analytical expression for the Josephson critical current valid in a broad range of parameters. This expression enables us to obtain not only known results in the dirty and clean limits but also in a intermediate region of the impurity concentration, wh…
We study odd-parity nematic superconductivity in doped topological insulators in presence of surface magnetic impurities. The peculiar surface subgap spectrum, characterized by a Majorana flatband, nodal cones and the surface states of the parent topological insulator, gives rise to an overall ferromagnetic RKKY interactions between the surface impurities. An additional coupling between the impurities and a preemptive chiral order parameter promote a surface time-reversal symmetry breaking solution at the surface of the system. We discuss the relevant scenarios and suggest to engineer surface …
One of the remarkable features of disordered d-wave superconductors is strong sensitivity of long range properties to the microscopic realization of the disorder potential. Particularly rich phenomenology is observed for the -- experimentally relevant -- case of dilute distributions of isolated impurity centers. Building on earlier diagrammatic analyses, the present paper derives and analyses a low energy effective field theory of this system. Specifically, the results of previous diagrammatic T-matrix approaches are extended into the perturbatively inaccessible low energy regimes, and the lon…
The Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction of magnetic impurities in a superconductor exponentially decreases when the distance $r$ between them is larger than the superconductor's coherence length, because this interaction is mediated by quasiparticles which have a gap in their energy spectrum. At the same time, the spin-singlet superconducting condensate was always assumed to stay neutral to magnetic impurities. Due to a spin-orbit coupling (SOC), however, Cooper pairs gain an admixture of spin-triplet correlated states which provide for a link between impurity spins and an s-wave …
We present a comprehensive theoretical study of thermodynamic properties of superconductors with a dilute concentration of magnetic impurities, with focus on how the properties of the superconducting host change if the magnetic moments of the impurities order ferromagnetically. Scattering off the magnetic impurities leads to the formation of a band of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states within the superconducting energy gap that drastically influences superconductivity. In the magnetically ordered system, the magnetization displays a sudden drop as function of impurity density or magnetic moment amplitude…
We consider the effects of magnetic impurities on the surface of superconducting Cu doped $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ in the odd parity pairing phase which support topologically protected Majorana fermions surface states with linear spectrum. We show that a single magnetic impurity on the surface may induce a pair of in-gap localized bound states. The energy of the in-gap state is extremely sensitive to the orientation of the magnetic impurity due to the so-called Ising properties of Majorana fermions. The magnetic impurity induced spin-texture, which can be measured using spin sensitive STM, is calculated…
We study the quantum interference between impurities in d-wave superconductors within a potential scattering formalism that easily applies to multiple impurities. The evolution of the low-energy local density of states for both magnetic and nonmagnetic short-ranged scatterers are studied as a function of the spatial configuration of the impurities. Further we discuss the influence of subdominant bulk superconducting order parameters on the interference pattern from multiple impurities.
Generalization of a disordered metal's theory has been proposed when scattering of quasiparticles by impurities is caused with a retarded interaction. It was shown that in this case Anderson's theorem was violated in the sense that embedding of the impurities in s-wave superconductor increases its critical temperature. The increasing depends on parameters of the metal, impurities and their concentration. At a specific relation between the parameters the critical temperature of the dirty superconductor can essentially exceed critical temperature of pure one up to room temperature. Thus the impu…
When subject to a weak magnetic impurity distribution, the order parameter and quasi-particle energy gap of a weakly disordered bulk s-wave superconductor are suppressed. In the Born scattering limit, recent investigations have shown that `optimal fluctuations' of the random impurity potential can lead to the nucleation of `domains' of localised states within the gap region predicted by the conventional Abrikosov-Gor'kov mean-field theory, rendering the superconducting system gapless at any finite impurity concentration. By implementing a field theoretic scheme tailored to the weakly disordere…
The effect of a homogeneous magnetic field and nonmagnetic impurities on the critical temperature of an anisotropic superconductor has been investigated. The role of these pair-breakers in relation to the anisotropy of the order parameter is clarified.
It is shown that weak correlations between the pair-breaking impurities in superconductors influence a temperature dependence of the order parameter within the Ginzburg and Landau region if the correlation radius of impurities R is greater than the coherence length of the superconductor $ξ_0$.Dependence of the square of the average order parameter on a temperature difference $T_c-T$ changes its slope in a region $ξ_0\sqrt{T_c/(T_c-T)\sim R $. Influence of correlations on other thermodynamic properties of superconductors is discussed too.
We argue that parametrically strong enhancement of a thermoelectric current can be observed in conventional superconductors doped by magnetic impurities. This effect is caused by violation of the symmetry between electron-like and hole-like excitations due to formation of subgap Andreev bound states in the vicinity of magnetic impurities. We develop a quantitative theory of this effect and demonstrate that it can be detected in modern experiments.
Zn and Ni impurities in the hole-doped high-temperature superconductors are known to have strong effects on thermodynamic and transport properties. A recent scanning tunneling microscope study of Zn-doped Bi2212 (Pan et al., Nature 403, 746 (2000)) has provided high-resolution images of the local density of states around non-magnetic impurities in d-wave superconductors. These pictures contain detailed information about the spinor wave functions u(r) and v(r) of bound states with energy E_0 \sim Delta/30, centered at the Zn-sites. We show that this type of wave function follows from the soluti…
A new method is proposed for practical calculation of the effective interaction between impurity scatterers in superconductors, based on algebraic properties of related Nambu matrices for Green functions. In particular, we show that the density of states within the s-wave gap can have a non-zero contribution (impossible either in Born and in T-matrix approximation) from non-magnetic impurities with concentration $c \ll 1$, beginning from $\sim c^{3}$ order.
We argue that any superconductor with magnetic impurities is gapless due to a Lifshitz tail in the density of states extending to zero energy. At low energy the density of states $ν(E \to 0)$ remains finite. We show that fluctuations in the impurity distribution produce regions of suppressed superconductivity, which are responsible for the low energy density of states.
We consider the effect of magnetic impurities, modeled by classical spins, in a conventional superconductor. We study their effect on the quasiparticles, specifically on the spin density and local density of states (LDOS). As previously emphasized, the impurities induce multiple scatterings of the quasiparticle wave functions leading to complex interference phenomena. Also, the impurities induce quantum phase transitions in the many-body system. Previous authors studied the effect of either a small number of impurities (from one to three) or a finite concentration of impurities, typically in a…
We derive the Ginzburg-Landau theory of unconventional singlet superconductors in the presence of a Zeeman field and impurities, in order to examine the resulting Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases. We show that the behavior of the FFLO phases in unconventional superconductors in the presence of impurities is qualitatively different from that found for s-wave superconductors.
The current response of a d-wave superconductor containing a single impurity is calculated and shown to be singular in the low-temperature limit, leading in the case of strong scattering to a 1/T term in the penetration depth $λ(T)$ similar to that induced by Andreev surface bound states. For a small number of such impurities, we argue this low-$T$ upturn could be observable in cuprate superconductors.
The combined effect of both nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities on the superconducting transition temperature is studied theoretically within the BCS model. An expression for the critical temperature as a function of potential and spin-flip scattering rates is derived for a two-dimensional superconductor with arbitrary in-plane anisotropy of the superconducting order parameter, ranging from isotropic s-wave to d-wave (or any pairing state with nonzero angular momentum) and including anisotropic s-wave and mixed (d+s)-wave as particular cases. This expression generalizes the well-known Abrikoso…
The notion of a finite pairing interaction energy range suggested by Nam, results in some states at the Fermi level not participating in pairings when there are scattering centers such as impurities. The fact that not all states at the Fermi level participate in pairing is shown to suppress $T_c$ in an isotropic superconductor and destroy superconductivity. We have presented quantitative calculations of $T_c$ reduced via spinless impurities, in good agreements with data of Zn-doped YBCO and LSCO, respectively. It is not necessary to have the anisotropic order parameter, to account for the dest…
We theoretically study the effect of localized magnetic impurities on two-dimensional topological superconductor (TSC). We show that the local density of states (LDOS) can be tuned by the effective exchange field $m$, the chemical potential $μ$ of TSC, and the distance $Δr$ as well as relative spin angle $α$ between two impurities. The changes in $Δr$ between two impurities alter the interference and result in significant modifications to the bonding and antibonding states. Furthermore, the bound-state spin LDOS induced by single and double magnetic impurity scattering, the quantum corrals, an…
We calculate the upper critical field, Hc2(T), due to the orbital pair breaking in disordered superconductors without inversion symmetry. Differences from the usual centrosymmetric case are highlighted. The linearized gap equations in magnetic field, with the singlet and triplet pairing channels mixed by impurity scattering, are solved exactly for a cubic crystal.
Using a real-space renormalization group (RSRG) technique, we compute the microwave conductivity of a d-wave superconductor disordered by extended impurities. To do this, we invoke a semiclassical approximation which naturally accesses the Andreev bound states localized near each impurity. Tunneling corrections (which are captured using the RSRG) lead to a delocalization of these quasiparticles and an associated contribution to the microwave conductivity.
I calculated the effect of magnetic impurities on the normal and superconductive properties of a multiband s-wave superconductor by direct solution of the two-band Eliashberg equations. In this way I determined the critical temperature, the values of the superconductive gaps, the shape of the superconductive density of states and other physical quantities that depend on the concentration of magnetic impurities. I found that the gaps and the penetration lengths display an unusual behaviour as a function of temperature. I examine the possibility that the presence of a negative induced gap raises…
We study the model of a d-wave superconductor interacting with finite concentration of Anderson impurities at zero temperature. The interaction between impurity and conduction electrons is taken into account within the large-$N$ approximation. We discuss the obtained phase diagram and its dependence on the main energy scales.
We propose a method to probe and control the interactions between an ensemble of magnetic impurities in a superconductor via microwave radiation. Our method relies upon the presence of sub-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states associated with the impurities. Depending on the sign of the detuning, radiation generates either a ferro- or antiferromagnetic contribution to the exchange interaction. This contribution can bias the statistics of the random exchange constants stemming from the RKKY interaction. Moreover, by measuring the microwave response at the YSR resonance, one gains information about …
In this work we present measurements of the electrical conductivity and of the magnetization of La and of La-Pr and La-Lu dilute (up to 2 atomic percent) alloys, from which we determine, very in particular, the influence of dilute magnetic impurities on the upper critical magnetic field amplitude [and then on the superconducting coherence length amplitude and on the Ginzburg-Landau parameter].
Effects of disorder on superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric compounds are discussed. Elastic impurity scattering, even for scalar impurities, leads to a strongly anisotropic mixing of the electron states in the bands split by the spin-orbit coupling. We focus on the calculation of the critical temperature, the upper critical field, and the spin susceptibility. It is shown that the impurity effects on the critical temperature are similar to those in multi-band centrosymmetric superconductors, in particular, Anderson's theorem holds for isotropic singlet pairing. In contrast, scalar …
Magnetic impurities affect the spectrum of excitations of a superconductor and thus influence its impedance. We concentrate on the dissipative part of the surface impedance. We investigate its dependence on frequency, the density and strength of magnetic impurities, and the density and temperature of quasiparticles. Even a small concentration of weak magnetic impurities significantly modifies the excitation spectrum in the vicinity of the BCS gap. Therefore, we give special attention to the absorption threshold behavior at zero temperature and to the low-frequency absorption by quasiparticles.…
A perturbation theory and a diagram technique for a disordered metal are proposed when scattering of quasiparticles by nonmagnetic impurities is caused with a retarded interaction. The perturbation theory generalizes a case of the elastic scattering in a disordered metal. Eliashberg equations for s-wave superconductivity are generalized for such a disordered superconductor. Anderson's theorem is found to be violated in the sense that embedding of the impurities into a s-wave superconductor increases its critical temperature. We showed the amplification of superconducting properties is a result…
We analyse the behavior of the density of states in a singlet s-wave superconductor with weak magnetic impurities in the clean limit. By using the method of optimal fluctuation and treating the order parameter self-consistently we show that the density of states is finite everywhere in the superconducting gap, and that it varies as $\ln N(E)\propto -|E-Δ_0|^{(7-d)/4}$ near the mean field gap edge $Δ_0$ in a d-dimensional superconductor. In contrast to most studied cases the optimal fluctuation is strongly anisotropic.
By using a model Hamiltonian with d-wave superconductivity and competing antiferromagnetic (AF) orders, the local staggered magnetization distribution due to nonmagnetic impurities in cuprate superconductors is investigated. From this, the net magnetic moment induced by a single or double impurities can be obtained. We show that the net moment induced by a single impurity corresponds to a local spin with S_z=0, or 1/2 depending on the strength of the AF interaction and the impurity scattering. When two impurities are placed at the nearest neighboring sites, the net moment is always zero. For t…
We investigate the effects of magnetic impurities in a superconducting state with $s_\pm$ pairing symmetry. Within a two-band model, we find that the intra-band magnetic scattering serves as a pair breaker while the inter-band magnetic scattering preserves pairing and hardly affects transition temperature in the Born limit. We also show that the same physics can persist beyond the weak scattering region. Our results coincide with recent experimental measurements in iron-based superconductors and thus provides an indirect evidence of the possible $s_\pm$ pairing symmetry in these materials.
We study quantum interference of electronic waves that are scattered by multiple non-magnetic impurities in a d_x2-y2-wave superconductor. We show that the number of resonance states in the density-of-states (DOS), as well as their frequency and spatial dependence change significantly as the distance between the impurities or their orientation relative to the crystal lattice is varied. Since the latter effect arises from the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap, we argue that quantum interference is a novel tool to identify the symmetry of unconventional superconductors.
We argue that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor is marginally stable in the presence of external perturbations. Subjected to the external perturbations by magnetic impurities, it develops a secondary component of the gap, complex $d_{xy}$, to maximize the coupling to impurities and lower the total energy. The secondary $d_{xy}$ component exists at high temperatures and produces the full gap $\sim 20 K$ in the single particle spectrum around each impurity, apart from impurity induced broadening. At low temperatures the phase ordering transition into global $ d_{x^2-y^2} + i d_{xy}$ state oc…
We study striped morphologies induced by magnetic impurities in d-wave superconductors (DSCs) near optimal doping by self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations based on the $t-t^{\prime }-U-V$ model. For the single impurity case, it is found that the stable ground state is a modulated checkerboard pattern. For the two-impurity case, the stripe-like structures in order parameters are induced due to the impurity-pinning effect. The modulations of DSC and charge orders share the same period of four lattice constants (4$a$), which is half the period of modulations in the coexisti…
The interplay between fluctuating Cooper pairs and magnetic impurities in conventional BCS low-Tc superconductors has been studied through measurements of the magnetic field dependence of the fluctuation diamagnetism (FD) above Tc in lanthanum with praseodymium impurities. These measurements provide a crucial confirmation of our previous observation [Europhys. Lett. 73, 587 (2006)] that in the dilute impurity regime the FD increases almost linearly with the concentration of magnetic impurities. This striking effect is attributed to a variation due to the presence of the fluctuating Cooper pair…
An in-plane magnetic field applied to an Ising superconductor converts spin-singlet Cooper pairs to spin-triplet ones. In this work, we study a Josephson junction formed by two Ising superconductors that are proximitized by ferromagnetic layers. This leads to highly tunable spin-triplet pairing correlations which allow to modulate the charge and spin supercurrents through the in-plane magnetic exchange fields. For a junction with a nonmagnetic barrier, the charge current is switchable by changing the relative alignment of the in-plane exchange fields, and a $π$-state can be realized. Furthermo…
We calculate frequency and temperature dependence of the anomalous ac Hall conductivity induced by impurity scattering in a chiral px+ipy superconductor, such as Sr2RuO4, with spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking in the absence of an external magnetic field. We consider two models of disorder, Gaussian and non-Gaussian, characterized by the second and third moments of the random impurity potential, respectively. Within both models, we find that the anomalous Hall conductivity has a finite real value at zero frequency, exhibits singularities at the threshold of photon absorption across t…
We analyse here the role electrons on Anderson-U impurities play in superconductivity in a metal alloy. We find that phonon coupling at impurities counteracts the traditional effects which dominate T_c suppression in the non-magnetic limit. In some cases, we findt hat non-magnetic impurities can enhance T_c. In the Kondo limit, a Fermi liquid analysis reveals that it is the enhancement in the density of states arising from the Kondo resonancethat counteracts pair-weakening.
We investigate the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the in-gap bound states localized at magnetic impurities in multi-band superconductors with unconventional (sign-changed) and conventional (sign-unchanged) $s$-wave pairing symmetry, which may be relevant to iron-based superconductors. Without spin-orbit coupling, for spin-singlet superconductors it is known that such bound states cross zero energy at a critical value of the impurity scattering strength and acquire a finite spin-polarization. Moreover, the degenerate, spin-polarized, zero energy bound states are unstable to applied Zeeman fie…
We study parametric level statistics of the discretized excitation spectra inside a moving vortex core in layered superconductors with impurities. The universal conductivity is evaluated numerically for the various values of rescaled vortex velocities $κ$ from the clean case to the dirty limit case. The random matrix theoretical prediction is verified numerically in the large $κ$ regime. On the contrary in the low velocity regime, we observe $σ_{xx} \propto κ^{2/3}$ which is consistent with the theoretical result for the super-clean case, where the energy dissipation is due to the Landau-Zener…
We present a theory of the subgap tails of the density of states in a diffusive superconductor containing magnetic impurities. We show that the subgap tails have two contributions: one arising from mesoscopic gap fluctuations, previously discussed by Lamacraft and Simons, and the other associated to the long-wave fluctuations of the concentration of magnetic impurities. We study the latter both in small superconducting grains and in bulk systems [$d=1,2,3$], and establish the dimensionless parameter that controls which of the two contributions dominates the subgap tails. We observe that these …
Bound states in superconductors are expected to exhibit a spatially resolved electron-hole asymmetry which is the hallmark of their quantum nature. This asymmetry manifests as oscillations at the Fermi wavelength, which is usually tiny and thus washed out by thermal broadening or by scattering at defects. Here we demonstrate theoretically and confirm experimentally that, when coupled to magnetic impurities, bound states in a vortex core exhibit an emergent axial electron-hole asymmetry on a much longer scale, set by the coherence length. We study vortices in 2H-NbSe$_2$ and in 2H-NbSe$_{1.8}$S…
We consider the effect of isotropic impurity scattering on the exotic superconducting states that arise from the usual BCS mechanism in substances of cubic and hexagonal symmetry where the Fermi surface contains inequivalent but degenerate pockets (e.g. around several points of high symmetry). As examples we look at CeCo$_2$, CeRu$_2$, and LaB$_6$; all of which have such Fermi surface topologies and the former exhibits unconventional superconducting behavior. We find that while these non s-wave states are suppressed by non-magnetic impurities, the suppression is much weaker than would be expec…
It is argued that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductor exhibits the transition into $d_{x^2-y^2} + id_{xy}$ state in the presence of magnetic impurities in certain conditions. Linear coupling between impurity magnetization and the $d_{xy}$ component drives this transition. Violation of time-reversal symmetry and parity occurs spontaneously via the second order transition. In the ordered phase both impurity magnetization and $d_{xy}$ component of the order parameter develop and are proportional to each other.
Qualitative differences in the spectrum of a superconductor near magnetic impurity pairs with moments aligned parallel and antiparallel are derived. A proposal is made for a new, nonmagnetic scanning tunneling spectroscopy of magnetic impurity interactions based on these differences. Near parallel impurity pairs the mid-gap localized spin-polarized states associated with each impurity hybridize and form bonding and anti-bonding molecular states with different energies. For antiparallel impurity moments the states do not hybridize; they are degenerate.
We study the impurity effect in the time reversal symmetry (${\cal T}$) breaking superconductor based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations. In ${\cal T}$-violating superconductors, spontaneous currents are induced around the impurity. The current patterns around the impurity reflect the structures of the Cooper pairs. We investigate impurity problem numerically for two kinds of ${\cal T}$ violating superconductors $(p_{x}\pm {\rm i}p_{y}$ and $d+{\rm i}s)$ and investigate the currents around the impurity. We also study the effects of the magnetic impurity in p-wave ($p_{x}\pm {\rm i}p_{…
The fluctuation-induced diamagnetism (FD), associated with the presence of precursor Cooper pairs in the normal state, has been measured in lanthanum with dilute magnetic (Pr) and nonmagnetic (Lu) impurities. It is found that while for pure La and La-Lu alloys the FD agrees, as expected, with the theoretical predictions, it is much larger for La-Pr alloys (around a factor 5 for La-2at.%Pr). These results suggest the existence of an indirect contribution to the FD arising from the interaction between fluctuating Cooper pairs and magnetic impurities.
We reveal that due to the presence of disorder oscillations of the order parameter amplitude called the Higgs mode can be effectively excited by the external electromagnetic radiation in usual BCS superconductors. This mechanism works for superconductors with both isotropic s-wave and anisotropic, such as d-wave, pairings. The non-linear response in the presence of impurities is captured by the quasiclassical formalism. We demonstrate that analytical solutions of the Eilenberger equation with impurity collision integral and external field drive coincide with the exact summation of ladder impur…
The specific-heat jump $ΔC$ at a critical temperature $T_c$ in an anisotropic superconductor containing both potential and spin-flip scatterers is calculated within a weak-coupling mean-field approximation. It is shown that the presence of even a small amount of spin-flip scatterers in the sample leads to a drastic change in the dependence of $ΔC$ on $T_c$ in a disordered $(d+s)$-wave or a strongly anisotropic s-wave superconductor. The implications for experimental tests for the presence of an s-wave admixture in the superconducting order parameter of high-$T_c$ superconductors are discussed.
We study the effects of quantum interference in impurity structures consisting of two or three magnetic impurities that are located on the surface of an s-wave superconductor. By using a self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism, we show that quantum interference leads to characteristic signatures not only in the local density of states (LDOS), but also in the spatial form of the superconducting order parameter. We demonstrate that the signatures of quantum interference in the LDOS are qualitatively, and to a large extent quantitatively unaffected by the suppression of the superconducting…
