We study a new class of vector dark energy models where multi-Proca fields $A_μ^a$ are coupled to cold dark matter by the term $f(X)\tilde{\mathcal{L}}_{m}$ where $f(X)$ is a general function of $X\equiv -\frac{1}{2}A^μ_ a A^a_μ$ and $\tilde{\mathcal{L}}_{m}$ is the cold dark matter Lagrangian. From here, we derive the general covariant form of the novel interaction term sourcing the field equations. This result is quite general in the sense that encompasses Abelian and non-Abelian vector fields. In particular, we investigate the effects of this type of coupling in a simple dark energy model based on three copies of canonical Maxwell fields to realize isotropic expansion. The cosmological background dynamics of the model is examined by means of a dynamical system analysis to determine the stability of the emergent cosmological solutions. As an interesting result, we find that the coupling function leads to the existence of a novel scaling solution during the dark matter dominance. Furthermore, the critical points show an early contribution of the vector field in the form of dark radiation and a stable de Sitter-type attractor at late times mimicking dark energy. The cosmological evolution of the system as well as the aforementioned features are verified by numerical computations. Observational constraints are also discussed to put the model in a more phenomenological context in the light of future observations.
We consider a specific dark energy model, which only includes the Lagrangian up to the cubic order in terms of the vector field self-interactions in the generalized Proca theory. We examine the cosmological parameters in the model by using the data sets of CMB and CMB+HST, respectively. In particular, the Hubble constant is found to be $H_0=71.80^{+1.07}_{-0.72}$ ($72.48^{+0.72}_{-0.60}$) $\rm kms^{-1}Mpc^{-1}$ at $68\%$~C.L. with CMB (CMB+HST), which would alleviate the Hubble constant tension. We also obtain that the reduced $χ^2$ values in our model are close to unity when fitting with CMB …
We study the production of heavy, $μ\gtrsim 1$ TeV, bosonic spin $s=0,1$ dark matter (DM) via the simultaneous processes of Hawking evaporation and superradiance (SR) from an initial population of small, $\lesssim 10^6$ kg, primordial black holes (PBHs). Even for small initial PBH spins the SR process can produce extremely dense gravitationally-bound DM Bose or Proca soliton "stars" of radius $\lesssim {\rm pm}$ and mass $\sim 10^{\rm few}$ kg that can survive to today, well after PBH decay. These solitons can constitute a significant fraction of the DM density, rising to $\gtrsim 50\%$ in the…
The beyond-generalized Proca theories are the extension of second-order massive vector-tensor theories (dubbed generalized Proca theories) with two transverse vector modes and one longitudinal scalar besides two tensor polarizations. Even with this extension, the propagating degrees of freedom remain unchanged on the isotropic cosmological background without an Ostrogradski instability. We study the cosmology in beyond-generalized Proca theories by paying particular attention to the dynamics of late-time cosmic acceleration and resulting observational consequences. We derive conditions for avo…
In this paper, we will consider cosmological implications of the Maxwell theory coupled to a non-local $U(1)$-symmetric term. It is well-known that the theory in flat space time, reduces to the Proca theory. However, it will be shown that in curved space time the resulting theory will differ from the coupled Einstein-Proca system. The cosmological perturbations on top of the de Sitter space-time is also considered and the dynamics of separate modes will be investigated in detail. Anisotropic cosmology of the model is also investigated and we will show that the behavior of the universe at late …
We consider strongly gravitating configurations consisting of coupled real Higgs scalar field and vector (Proca) field of mass $μ_P$. For such a system, we find static regular axially symmetric solutions describing asymptotically flat configurations which may be referred to as Proca-Higgs miniboson stars, since their total mass and spatial dimension are of order $M_{\text{Pl}}^2/μ_P$ and $μ_P^{-1}$, respectively. The system possesses an axially symmetric dipole field and may be regarded as a Proca dipole.
We compare the massive Kalb-Ramond and Proca fields with a quartic self-interaction and show that the same strong coupling scale is present in both theories. In the Proca theory, the longitudinal mode enters the strongly coupled regime beyond this scale, while the two transverse modes propagate further and survive in the massless limit. In contrast, in case of the massive Kalb-Ramond field, the two transverse modes become strongly coupled beyond the Vainshtein scale, while the pseudo-scalar mode remains in the weak coupling regime and survives in the massless limit. This indicates a contradict…
We demonstrate that black holes and stars in general relativity can be destabilized by perturbations of non-minimally coupled vector fields. Focusing on static and spherically symmetric backgrounds, our analysis shows that black holes with sufficiently small mass and stars with sufficiently high densities are subject to ghost or gradient-type instabilities. This holds for a large class of vector-tensor theories whenever non-minimal couplings contribute to linearized dynamics about a state with vanishing vector field and applies to generalized Proca models that have sparked attention for their …
We present a family of exact black-hole solutions on a static spherically symmetric background in second-order generalized Proca theories with derivative vector-field interactions coupled to gravity. We also derive non-exact solutions in power-law coupling models including vector Galileons and numerically show the existence of regular black holes with a primary hair associated with the longitudinal propagation. The intrinsic vector-field derivative interactions generally give rise to a secondary hair induced by non-trivial field profiles. The deviation from General Relativity is most significa…
In the present work, we study linear, torsion-free metric-Palatini gravity, extended by the quadratics of the antisymmetric part of the Ricci tensor and extended also by the presence of the affine connection in the matter sector. We show that this extended metric-Palatini gravity reduces dynamically to the general relativity plus a geometrical massive vector field corresponding to non-metricity of the connection. We also show that this geometric Proca field couples to fermions universally. We derive static, spherically symmetric field equations of this Einstein-geometric Proca theory. We study…
We consider the finite interactions of the generalized Proca theory including the sixth-order Lagrangian and derive the full linear perturbation equations of motion on the flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background in the presence of a matter perfect fluid. By construction, the propagating degrees of freedom (besides the matter perfect fluid) are two transverse vector perturbations, one longitudinal scalar, and two tensor polarizations. The Lagrangians associated with intrinsic vector modes neither affect the background equations of motion nor the second-order action of tensor perturb…
Massive vector fields feature in several areas of particle physics, e.g., as carriers of weak interactions, dark matter candidates, or as an effective description of photons in a plasma. Here we investigate vector fields with self-interactions by replacing the mass term in the Proca equation with a general potential. We show that this seemingly benign modification inevitably introduces ghost instabilities of the same kind as those recently identified for vector-tensor theories of modified gravity (but in this simpler, minimally coupled theory). It has been suggested that nonperturbative dynami…
Quantization of the Proca field in the Rindler wedge and the interaction of uniformly accelerated currents with massive vector bosons from the Unruh thermal bath
The gravitational-wave event GW170817, together with the electromagnetic counterpart, shows that the speed of tensor perturbations $c_T$ on the cosmological background is very close to that of light $c$ for the redshift $z<0.009$. In generalized Proca theories, the Lagrangians compatible with the condition $c_T=c$ are constrained to be derivative interactions up to cubic order, besides those corresponding to intrinsic vector modes. We place observational constraints on a dark energy model in cubic-order generalized Proca theories with intrinsic vector modes by running the Markov chain Monte Ca…
We show that complex, massive spin-1 fields minimally coupled to Einstein's gravity with a negative cosmological constant, admit asymptotically anti-de Sitter self-gravitating solutions. Focusing on 4-dimensional spacetimes, we start by obtaining analytical solutions in the test-field limit, where the Proca field equations can be solved in a fixed anti-de Sitter background, and then find fully non-linear solutions numerically. These solutions are a natural extension of the recently found asymptotically flat Proca stars and share similar properties with scalar boson stars. In particular, we sho…
We derive the profile of a vector field coupled to matter on a static and spherically symmetric background in the context of generalized Proca theories. The cubic Galileon self-interaction leads to the suppression of a longitudinal vector component due to the operation of the Vainshtein mechanism. For quartic and sixth-order derivative interactions, the solutions consistent with those in the continuous limit of small derivative couplings correspond to the branch with the vanishing longitudinal mode. We compute the corrections to gravitational potentials outside a compact body induced by the ve…

In this paper we consider generalised Proca theories coupled to any background field and with time-time and time-space components of Hessian of the vector sector are zero, whereas the space-space part is non-degenerate. By using Faddeev-Jackiw analysis, we derive the conditions that these theories have to satisfy in order for the vector sector to have three propagating degrees of freedom. Most of these conditions are trivialised due to diffeomorphism invariance requirements. This leaves only a condition that a complicated combination of terms should not be trivially zero. This condition is the…
In a model of the late-time cosmic acceleration within the framework of generalized Proca theories, there exists a de Sitter attractor preceded by the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}=-1-s$, where $s$ is a positive constant. We run the Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo code to confront the model with the observational data of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillations, supernovae type Ia, and local measurements of the Hubble expansion rate for the background cosmological solutions and obtain the bound $s=0.254^{{}+ 0.118}_{{}-0.097}$ at 95% confidence level (CL). Existence…
In beyond-generalized Proca theories including the extension to theories higher than second order, we study the role of a spatial component $v$ of a massive vector field on the anisotropic cosmological background. We show that, as in the case of the isotropic cosmological background, there is no additional ghostly degrees of freedom associated with the Ostrogradski instability. In second-order generalized Proca theories we find the existence of anisotropic solutions on which the ratio between the anisotropic expansion rate $Σ$ and the isotropic expansion rate $H$ remains nearly constant in the…
Motivated by the GW170817/GRB170817A constraint on the deviation of the speed of gravitational waves from that of photons, we study disformal transformations of the metric in the context of the generalized Proca theory. The constraint restricts the form of the gravity Lagrangian, the way the electromagnetism couples to the gravity sector on cosmological backgrounds, or in general a combination of both. Since different ways of coupling matter to gravity are typically related to each other by disformal transformations, it is important to understand how the structure of the generalized Proca Lagr…

Bekenstein proved that in Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to one (or many) real, Abelian, Proca field, stationary black holes (BHs) cannot have Proca hair. Dropping Bekenstein's assumption that matter inherits spacetime symmetries, we show this model admits asymptotically flat, stationary, axi-symmetric, regular on and outside an event horizon BHs with Proca hair, for an even number of real (or an arbitrary number of complex) Proca fields. To establish it, we start by showing that a test, complex Proca field can form bound states, with real frequency, around Kerr BHs: stationary Proca clo…
Advanced LIGO-Virgo reported a short gravitational-wave signal (GW190521) interpreted as a quasi-circular merger of black holes, one populating the pair-instability supernova gap, forming a remnant black hole of $M_f\sim 142 M_\odot$ at a luminosity distance of $d_L \sim 5.3$ Gpc. With barely visible pre-merger emission, however, GW190521 merits further investigation of the pre-merger dynamics and even of the very nature of the colliding objects. We show that GW190521 is consistent with numerically simulated signals from head-on collisions of two (equal mass and spin) horizonless vector boson …
We consider configurations consisting of a gravitating nonlinear spinor field $ψ$, with a nonlinearity of the type $λ\left(\barψψ\right)^2$, minimally coupled to Maxwell and Proca fields through the coupling constants $Q_M$ [U(1) electric charge] and $Q_P$, respectively. In order to ensure spherical symmetry of the configurations, we use two spin-$1/2$ fields having opposite spins. By means of numerical computations, we find families of equilibrium configurations with a positive Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass described by regular zero-node asymptotically flat solutions for static Maxwell and…
We discuss a new perturbation method to study the dynamics of massive vector fields on (near-)extremal static black hole spacetimes. We start with, as our background, a rather generic class of warped product metrics, and classify the field variables into the vector(axial)- and scalar(polar)-type components. On this generic background, we show that for the vector-type components, the Proca equation reduces to a single master equation, whereas the scalar-type components remain to be coupled. Then, focusing on the case of (near-)extremal static black holes in four-dimensions, we consider the near…
In this Letter, we consider the model-independent reconstruction of the expansion and growth functions from the Pantheon supernova data. The method relies on developing the expansion function in terms of shifted Chebyshev polynomials and determining the coefficients of the polynomials by a maximum-likelihood fit to the data. Having obtained the expansion function in a model-independent way, we can then also determine the growth function without assuming a particular model. We then compare the results with the predictions of two classes of Dark Energy models, firstly a class of quintessence sca…

Einstein's gravity minimally coupled to free, massive, classical fundamental fields admits particle-like solutions. These are asymptotically flat, everywhere non-singular configurations that realise Wheeler's concept of a geon: a localised lump of self-gravitating energy whose existence is anchored on the non-linearities of general relativity, trivialising in the flat spacetime limit. In arXiv:1708.05674 the key properties for the existence of these solutions (also referred to as stars or self-gravitating solitons) were discussed - which include a harmonic time dependence in the matter field -…
