We demonstrate that black holes and stars in general relativity can be destabilized by perturbations of non-minimally coupled vector fields. Focusing on static and spherically symmetric backgrounds, our analysis shows that black holes with sufficiently small mass and stars with sufficiently high densities are subject to ghost or gradient-type instabilities. This holds for a large class of vector-tensor theories whenever non-minimal couplings contribute to linearized dynamics about a state with vanishing vector field and applies to generalized Proca models that have sparked attention for their potential role in cosmology and astrophysics. The stability criteria translate into bounds of relevance for low-scale theories of dark energy and for ultra-light dark matter scenarios.
We establish radiative stability of generalized Proca effective field theories. While standard powercounting arguments would conclude otherwise, we find non-trivial cancellations of leading order corrections by explicit computation of divergent one-loop diagrams up to four-point. These results are crosschecked against an effective action based generalized Schwinger-DeWitt method. Further, the cancellations are understood as coming from the specific structure of the theory through a decoupling limit analysis which at the same time allows for an extension of the results to higher orders.
We study the quantum corrections to the generalized Proca theory via matter loops. We consider two types of interactions, linear and nonlinear in the vector field. Calculating the one-loop correction to the vector field propagator, three- and four-point functions, we show that the non-linear interactions are harmless, although they renormalize the theory. The linear matter-vector field interactions introduce ghost degrees of freedom to the generalized Proca theory. Treating the theory as an effective theory, we calculate the energy scale up to which the theory remains healthy.
We prove that vector fields described by the generalized Proca class of theories do not admit a consistent coupling to a gravitational sector defined by a scalar-tensor theory of the degenerate type. Under the assumption that there exists a frame in which the Proca field interacts with gravity only through the metric tensor, our analysis shows that at least one of the constraints associated with the degeneracy of the scalar-tensor sector is inevitably lost whenever the vector theory includes a coupling to the Christoffel connection.

We investigate quantum stability of the generalised Proca theories in curved spacetime treating gravity as a dynamical field. To compute the quantum gravitational corrections we evaluate divergent part of the effective action at one loop level. We employ Vilkovisky-DeWitt formalism for this task which gives us a gauge invariant and gauge condition independent effective action. It is shown that the quantum corrections are suppressed by a UV cutoff parametrically higher than the Proca mass if the coupling constants are restricted to lie in a certain range. Furthermore it is shown that the quantu…
We study Proca stars in a vector-tensor gravity model inspired by Horndeski's generalized Einstein-Maxwell field equations, supplemented with a mass term for the vector field. We discuss the effects of the non-minimal coupling term on the properties of the resulting Proca stars. %and show that they can form vector hair. We show that the sign of the coupling constant is crucial in determining the generic properties of these generalized Proca star solutions, as soon as the magnitude of the coupling constant is sufficiently large to allow for significant deviations from the standard Proca star ca…
The beyond-generalized Proca theories are the extension of second-order massive vector-tensor theories (dubbed generalized Proca theories) with two transverse vector modes and one longitudinal scalar besides two tensor polarizations. Even with this extension, the propagating degrees of freedom remain unchanged on the isotropic cosmological background without an Ostrogradski instability. We study the cosmology in beyond-generalized Proca theories by paying particular attention to the dynamics of late-time cosmic acceleration and resulting observational consequences. We derive conditions for avo…
The construction of general derivative self-interactions for a massive Proca field relies on the well-known condition for constrained systems of having a degenerate Hessian. The nature of the existing constraints algebra will distinguish among different classes of interactions. Proca-Nuevo interactions enjoy a non-trivial constraint by mixing terms of various order whereas Generalized Proca interactions satisfy the degeneracy condition order by order for each individual Lagrangians. In both cases the vector field propagates at most three degrees of freedom. It has been shown that the scatterin…
In Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi (GLPV) scalar-tensor theories, which are outside the domain of second-order Horndeski theories, it is known that there exists a solid angle deficit singularity in the case where the parameter $α_{\rm H}$ characterizing the deviation from Horndeski theories approaches a non-vanishing constant at the center of a spherically symmetric body. Meanwhile, it was recently shown that second-order generalized Proca theories with a massive vector field $A^μ$ can be consistently extended to beyond-generalized Proca theories, which recover shift-symmetric GLPV theories i…
We consider higher-order derivative interactions beyond second-order generalized Proca theories that propagate only the three desired polarizations of a massive vector field besides the two tensor polarizations from gravity. These new interactions follow the similar construction criteria to those arising in the extension of scalar-tensor Horndeski theories to Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi (GLPV) theories. On the isotropic cosmological background, we show the existence of a constraint with a vanishing Hamiltonian that removes the would-be Ostrogradski ghost. We study the behavior of linear p…
We present a family of exact black-hole solutions on a static spherically symmetric background in second-order generalized Proca theories with derivative vector-field interactions coupled to gravity. We also derive non-exact solutions in power-law coupling models including vector Galileons and numerically show the existence of regular black holes with a primary hair associated with the longitudinal propagation. The intrinsic vector-field derivative interactions generally give rise to a secondary hair induced by non-trivial field profiles. The deviation from General Relativity is most significa…
We calculate the one-loop divergences for different vector field models in curved spacetime. We introduce a classification scheme based on their degeneracy structure, which encompasses the well-known models of the non-degenerate vector field, the Abelian gauge field and the Proca field. The renormalization of the generalized Proca model, which has important applications in cosmology, is more complicated. By extending standard heat-kernel techniques, we derive a closed form expression for the one-loop divergences of the generalized Proca model.
To date, different alternative theories of gravity, although related, involving Proca fields have been proposed. Unfortunately, the procedure to obtain the relevant terms in some formulations has not been systematic enough or exhaustive, thus resulting in some missing terms or ambiguity in the process carried out. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure to build the beyond generalized theory for a Proca field in four dimensions containing only the field itself and its first-order derivatives. We examine the validity of our procedure at the fourth level of the generalized Proca theory.…
We extend previous results on healthy derivative self-interactions for a Proca field to the case of a set of massive vector fields. We obtain non-gauge invariant derivative self-interactions for the vector fields that maintain the appropriate number of propagating degrees of freedom. In view of the potential cosmological applications, we restrict to interactions with an internal rotational symmetry. We provide a systematical construction order by order in derivatives of the fields and making use of the antisymmetric Levi-Civita tensor. We then compare with the one single vector field case and …
Following previous works on generalized Abelian Proca theory, also called vector Galileon, we investigate the massive extension of an SU(2) gauge theory, i.e., the generalized SU(2) Proca model, which could be dubbed non-Abelian vector Galileon. This particular symmetry group permits fruitful applications in cosmology such as inflation driven by gauge fields. Our approach consists in building, in an exhaustive way, all the Lagrangians containing up to six contracted Lorentz indices. For this purpose, and after identifying by group theoretical considerations all the independent Lagrangians whic…
The generalized Proca theories with second-order equations of motion can be healthily extended to a more general framework in which the number of propagating degrees of freedom remains unchanged. In the presence of a quartic-order nonminimal coupling to gravity arising in beyond-generalized Proca theories, the speed of gravitational waves $c_t$ on the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmological background can be equal to that of light $c$ under a certain condition. By using this condition alone, we show that the speed of gravitational waves in the vicinity of static and spherically…
We investigate the cosmological viability of the generalized proca theory. We first implement the background and linear perturbation equations of motion in the Boltzmann code and then study the constraints on the parameters of the generalized proca theory after running MCMC against the cosmological data set. With Planck + HST data, we obtain the constraint $h=0.7334_{-0.0269}^{+0.0246}$, which indicates that the tension between early universe and late time universe within this theory is removed. By adding other late-time data sets (BAO, RSD, etc.) we show that the tension is reduced, as the 2$…
We study the consistency of the decoupling limit of the generalized SU(2) Proca theory (GSU2P). Namely, we study the healthiness of those terms whose analysis in the scalar limit was not originally established in the reconstruction of the full theory (see the work by Gallego Cadavid et. al. [Phys. Rev. D 102, 104066 (2020)]). Those terms are the parity-violating $\tilde{\mathcal{L}}_{4,2}^1$ and the parity-conserving beyond SU(2) Proca terms $\mathcal{L}_{4,2}^3$ and $\mathcal{L}_{4,2}^4$. Using the 3+1 Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism, we write down the kinetic Lagrangian of these terms in the…
Proca-Nuevo is a non-linear theory of a massive spin-1 field which enjoys a non-linearly realized constraint that distinguishes it among other generalized vector models. We show that the theory may be extended by the addition of operators of the Generalized Proca class without spoiling the primary constraint that is necessary for consistency, allowing to interpolate between Generalized Proca operators and Proca-Nuevo ones. The constraint is maintained on flat spacetime and on any fixed curved background. Upon mixing extended Proca-Nuevo dynamically with gravity, we show that the constraint get…
Assuming unitarity, locality, causality, and Lorentz invariance of the, otherwise unknown, UV completion, we derive a new set of constraints on the effective field theory coefficients for the most general, ghost-free Generalized Proca and Proca Nuevo massive vector models. For the Generalized Proca model, we include new interactions that had not been previously considered in the context of positivity bounds and find these additional terms lead to a widened parameter space for the previously considered interactions. Although, the Generalized Proca and Proca Nuevo models are inequivalent, we fin…
We reconsider the construction of general derivative self-interactions for a massive Proca field. The constructed Lagrangian is such that the vector field propagates at most three degrees of freedom, thus avoiding the ghostly nature of a fourth polarisation. The construction makes use of the well-known condition for constrained systems of having a degenerate Hessian. We briefly discuss the casuistry according to the nature of the existing constraints algebra. We also explore various classes of interesting new interactions that have been recently raised in the literature. For the sixth order La…
We derive the profile of a vector field coupled to matter on a static and spherically symmetric background in the context of generalized Proca theories. The cubic Galileon self-interaction leads to the suppression of a longitudinal vector component due to the operation of the Vainshtein mechanism. For quartic and sixth-order derivative interactions, the solutions consistent with those in the continuous limit of small derivative couplings correspond to the branch with the vanishing longitudinal mode. We compute the corrections to gravitational potentials outside a compact body induced by the ve…
We revisit the most general theory for a massive vector field with derivative self-interactions, extending previous works on the subject to account for terms having trivial total derivative interactions for the longitudinal mode. In the flat spacetime (Minkowski) case, we obtain all the possible terms containing products of up to five first-order derivatives of the vector field, and provide a conjecture about higher-order terms. Rendering the metric dynamical, we covariantize the results and add all possible terms implying curvature.
We investigate the static and spherically symmetric solutions in a class of the generalized Proca theory with the nonminimal coupling to the Einstein tensor. First, we show that the solutions in the scalar-tensor theory with the nonminimal derivative coupling to the Einstein tensor can be those in the generalized Proca theory with the vanishing field strength. We then show that when the field strength takes the nonzero value the static and spherically symmetric solutions can be found only for the specific value of the nonminimal coupling constant. Second, we investigate the first-order slow-ro…

Motivated by the GW170817/GRB170817A constraint on the deviation of the speed of gravitational waves from that of photons, we study disformal transformations of the metric in the context of the generalized Proca theory. The constraint restricts the form of the gravity Lagrangian, the way the electromagnetism couples to the gravity sector on cosmological backgrounds, or in general a combination of both. Since different ways of coupling matter to gravity are typically related to each other by disformal transformations, it is important to understand how the structure of the generalized Proca Lagr…
We consider a massive vector field with derivative interactions that propagates only the 3 desired polarizations (besides two tensor polarizations from gravity) with second-order equations of motion in curved space-time. The cosmological implications of such generalized Proca theories are investigated for both the background and the linear perturbation by taking into account the Lagrangian up to quintic order. In the presence of a matter fluid with a temporal component of the vector field, we derive the background equations of motion and show the existence of de Sitter solutions relevant to th…
For a massive vector field with derivative self-interactions, the breaking of the gauge invariance allows the propagation of a longitudinal mode in addition to the two transverse modes. We consider generalized Proca theories with second-order equations of motion in a curved space-time and study how the longitudinal scalar mode of the vector field gravitates on a spherically symmetric background. We show explicitly that cubic-order self-interactions lead to the suppression of the longitudinal mode through the Vainshtein mechanism. Provided that the dimensionless coupling of the interaction is n…
We consider the finite interactions of the generalized Proca theory including the sixth-order Lagrangian and derive the full linear perturbation equations of motion on the flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background in the presence of a matter perfect fluid. By construction, the propagating degrees of freedom (besides the matter perfect fluid) are two transverse vector perturbations, one longitudinal scalar, and two tensor polarizations. The Lagrangians associated with intrinsic vector modes neither affect the background equations of motion nor the second-order action of tensor perturb…
We consider a specific dark energy model, which only includes the Lagrangian up to the cubic order in terms of the vector field self-interactions in the generalized Proca theory. We examine the cosmological parameters in the model by using the data sets of CMB and CMB+HST, respectively. In particular, the Hubble constant is found to be $H_0=71.80^{+1.07}_{-0.72}$ ($72.48^{+0.72}_{-0.60}$) $\rm kms^{-1}Mpc^{-1}$ at $68\%$~C.L. with CMB (CMB+HST), which would alleviate the Hubble constant tension. We also obtain that the reduced $χ^2$ values in our model are close to unity when fitting with CMB …
Explaining the late time acceleration is one of the most challenging tasks for theoretical physicists today. Infra-red modification of Einstein's general theory of relativity (GR) is a possible route to model late time acceleration. In this regard, vector-tensor theory as a part of gravitational interactions on large cosmological scales, has been proposed recently. This involves generalization of massive Proca lagrangian in curved space time. Black hole solutions in such theories have also been constructed. In this paper, we study different astrophysical signatures of such black holes. We firs…
We summarize previous results on the most general Proca theory in 4 dimensions containing only first-order derivatives in the vector field (second-order at most in the associated Stückelberg scalar) and having only three propagating degrees of freedom with dynamics controlled by second-order equations of motion. Discussing the Hessian condition used in previous works, we conjecture that, as in the scalar galileon case, the most complete action contains only a finite number of terms with second-order derivatives of the Stückelberg field describing the longitudinal mode, which is in agreement wi…
We consider the Lagrangian of a vector field with derivative self-interactions with a priori arbitrary coefficients. Starting with a flat space-time we show that for a special choice of the coefficients of the self-interactions the ghost-like pathologies disappear. For this we use the degeneracy condition of the Hessian. This constitutes the Galileon-type generalization of the Proca action with only three propagating physical degrees of freedom. The longitudinal mode of the vector field is associated to the usual Galileon interactions for a specific choice of the overall functions. In differen…
Under the same spirit of the Galileon-Horndeski theories and their more modern extensions, the generalized SU(2) Proca theory was built by demanding that its action may be free of the Ostrogradski's instability. Nevertheless, the theory must also be free of other instability problems in order to ensure its viability. As a first approach to address this issue, we concentrate on a quite general variant of the theory and investigate the general conditions for the absence of ghost and gradient instabilities in the tensor sector without the need for resolving the dynamical background. The phenomeno…

In a class of generalized Proca theories, we study the existence of neutron star solutions with a nonvanishing temporal component of the vector field $A_μ$ approaching 0 toward spatial infinity, as they may be the endpoints of tachyonic instabilities of neutron star solutions in general relativity with $A_μ=0$. Such a phenomenon is called spontaneous vectorization, which is analogous to spontaneous scalarization in scalar-tensor theories with nonminimal couplings to the curvature or matter. For the nonminimal coupling $βX R$, where $β$ is a coupling constant and $X=-A_μA^μ/2$, we show that the…
In a model of the late-time cosmic acceleration within the framework of generalized Proca theories, there exists a de Sitter attractor preceded by the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}=-1-s$, where $s$ is a positive constant. We run the Markov-Chain-Monte-Carlo code to confront the model with the observational data of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), baryon acoustic oscillations, supernovae type Ia, and local measurements of the Hubble expansion rate for the background cosmological solutions and obtain the bound $s=0.254^{{}+ 0.118}_{{}-0.097}$ at 95% confidence level (CL). Existence…
The generalized SU(2) Proca theory (GSU2P) is a variant of the well known generalized Proca theory where the vector field belongs to the Lie algebra of the SU(2) group of global transformations under which the action is made invariant. New interesting possibilities arise in this framework because of the existence of new interactions of purely non-Abelian character and new configurations of the vector field resulting in spatial spherical symmetry and the cosmological dynamics being driven by the propagating degrees of freedom. We study the two-dimensional phase space of the system that results …

In beyond-generalized Proca theories including the extension to theories higher than second order, we study the role of a spatial component $v$ of a massive vector field on the anisotropic cosmological background. We show that, as in the case of the isotropic cosmological background, there is no additional ghostly degrees of freedom associated with the Ostrogradski instability. In second-order generalized Proca theories we find the existence of anisotropic solutions on which the ratio between the anisotropic expansion rate $Σ$ and the isotropic expansion rate $H$ remains nearly constant in the…
