We report our realization of a parity-time (PT) symmetric non-Hermitian many-body system using cold atoms with dissipation. After developing a theoretical framework on PT-symmetric many-body systems using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice with controlled dissipation, we describe our experimental setup utilizing one-body atom loss as dissipation with special emphasis on calibration of important system parameters. We discuss loss dynamics observed experimentally.
We study interacting ultracold atoms in a three-dimensional (3D) harmonic trap with spin-selective dissipations, which can be effectively described by non-Hermitian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric Hamiltonians. By solving the non-Hermitian two-body problem of spin-1/2 (spin-1) bosons in a 3D harmonic trap exactly, we find that the system can exhibit third-order (fifth-order) exceptional point (EP) with ultra-sensitive cube-root (fifth-root) spectral response due to interaction anisotropies in spin channels. We also present the general principle for the creation of high-order EPs and the…
We study the dynamics of counterflowing bosonic and fermionic lithium atoms. First, by tuning the interaction strength we measure the critical velocity vc of the system in the BEC-BCS crossover in the low temperature regime and we compare it to the recent prediction of Castin et al., Comptes Rendus Physique, 16, 241 (2015). Second, raising the temperature of the mixture slightly above the superfluid transitions reveals an unexpected phase-locking of the oscillations of the clouds. We interpret this observation as resulting from a Zeno-like effect induced by dissipation.
Non-Hermitian skin effect, which refers to the phenomenon that an extensive number of eigenstates are localized at the boundary, has been widely studied in lattice models and experimentally observed in several classical systems. In this work, we predict that the existence of the non-Hermitian skin effect in the dissipative ultracold fermions with spin-orbit coupling, a continuous model that has been implemented by the Hong-Kong group in a recent experiment. This skin effect is robust against the variation of external parameters and trapping potentials. We further reveal a dynamic sticky effect…
A paradigm model of modern atom optics is studied, strongly interacting ultracold bosons in an optical lattice. This many-body system can be artificially opened in a controlled manner by modern experimental techniques. We present results based on a non-hermitian effective Hamiltonian whose quantum spectrum is analyzed. The direct access to the spectrum of the metastable many-body system allows us to easily identify relatively stable quantum states, corresponding to previously predicted solitonic many-body structures.
We investigate the Kondo effect in an open quantum system, motivated by recent experiments with ultracold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms. Because of inelastic collisions and the associated atom losses, this system is described by a complex-valued Kondo interaction and provides a non-Hermitian extension of the Kondo problem. We show that the non-Hermiticity induces anomalous reversion of renormalization-group flows which violate the $g$-theorem due to non-unitarity and produce a quantum phase transition unique to non-Hermiticity. Furthermore, we exactly solve the non-Hermitian Kondo Hamiltonian us…
We study the influence of particle interaction on a quantum walk on a bipartite one-dimensional lattice with decay from every second site. The corresponding non-interacting (linear) system has been shown to have a topological transition described by the average displacement before decay. Here we use this topological quantity to distinguish coherent quantum dynamics from incoherent classical dynamics caused by a breaking of the translational symmetry. We furthermore analyze the behavior by means of a rate equation providing a quantitative description of the incoherent nonlinear dynamics.
Non-Hermitian skin effect(NHSE) describes a unique non-Hermitian phenomenon that all eigen-modes are localized near the boundary, and has profound impact on a wide range of bulk properties. In particular, topological systems with NHSE have stimulated extensive research interests recently, given the fresh theoretical and experimental challenges therein. Here we propose a readily implementable scheme for achieving NHSE with band topology in ultracold gases. Specifically, the scheme realizes the one-dimensional optical Raman lattice with two types of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and an additional la…
We develop a non-Hermitian effective theory for a repulsively interacting Fermi gas in the excited branch. The on-shell $T$-matrix is employed as a complex-valued interaction term, which describes a repulsive interaction between atoms in the excited branch and a two-body inelastic decay to the attractive branch. To see the feature of this model, we have addressed, in the weak coupling regime, the excitation properties of a repulsive Fermi polaron as well as the time-dependent number density. The analytic expressions obtained for these quantities qualitatively show a good agreement with recent …

Recent experimental breakthroughs in non-Hermitian ultracold atomic lattices have dangled tantalizing prospects in realizing exotic, hitherto unreported, many-body non-Hermitian quantum phenomena. In this work, we discover and propose an experimental platform for a radically different non-Hermitian phenomenon dubbed polaron squeezing. It is marked by a dipole-like accumulation of fermions arising from an interacting impurity in a background of non-Hermitian reciprocity-breaking hoppings. We computed their spatial density and found that, unlike Hermitian polarons which are symmetrically localiz…
We study the impact of non-Hermiticity on the molecule formation in a two-component spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas near a wide Feshbach resonance. Under an experimentally feasible configuration where the two-photon Raman process is dissipative, the Raman-induced synthetic spin-orbit coupling acquires a complex strength. Remarkably, dissipation of the system facilitates the formation and binding of molecules, which, despite their dissipative nature and finite lifetime, exist over a wider parameter regime than in the corresponding Hermitian system. These dissipation-facilitated molecules can be pr…
The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), the accumulation of eigen wavefunctions at boundaries of open systems, underlies a variety of exotic properties that defy conventional wisdom. While NHSE and its intriguing impact on band topology and dynamics have been observed in classical or photonic systems, their demonstration in a quantum many-body setting remains elusive. Here we report the experimental realization of a dissipative Aharonov-Bohm chain -- a non-Hermitian topological model with NHSE -- in the momentum space of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. We identify unique signatures of …
Recent studies of quantum circuit models have theoretically shown that frequent measurements induce a transition in a quantum many-body system, which is characterized by the change of the scaling law of the entanglement entropy from a volume law to an area law. In order to propose a way for experimentally observing this measurement-induced transition, we present numerical analyses using matrix-product states on quench dynamics of a dissipative Bose-Hubbard model with controllable two-body losses, which has been realized in recent experiments with ultracold atoms. We find that when the strength…
Recently it has been shown that pairs of atoms can form metastable bonds due to non-conservative forces induced by dissipation [Lemeshko&Weimer, Nature Comm. 4, 2230 (2013)]. Here we study the dynamics of interaction-induced coherent population trapping - the process responsible for the formation of dissipatively bound molecules. We derive the effective dissipative potentials induced between ultracold atoms by laser light, and study the time evolution of the scattering states. We demonstrate that binding occurs on short timescales of ~10 microseconds, even if the initial kinetic energy of the …
Due to the fundamental position of spin-orbit coupled ultracold atoms in the simulation of topological insulators, the gain/loss effects on these systems should be evaluated when considering the measurement or the coupling to the environment. Here, incorporating the mature gain/loss techniques into the experimentally realized spin-orbit coupled ultracold atoms in two-dimensional optical lattices, we investigate the corresponding non-Hermitian tight-binding model and evaluate the gain/loss effects on various properties of the system, revealing the interplay of the non-Hermiticity and the spin-o…
Recent realizations of quantum gas microscope offer the possibility of continuous monitoring of the dynamics of a quantum many-body system at the single-particle level. By analyzing effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians of interacting bosons in an optical lattice and continuum, we demonstrate that the backaction of quantum measurement shifts the quantum critical point and gives rise to a unique critical phase beyond the terrain of the standard universality class. We perform mean-field and strong-coupling-expansion analyses and show that non-Hermitian contributions shift the superfluid--to-Mott-…
A many-body Wannier-Stark system coupled to an effective reservoir is studied within a non-Hermitian approach in the presence of a periodic driving. We show how the interplay of dissipation and driving dynamically induces a subspace of states which are very robust against dissipation. We numerically probe the structure of these asymptotic states and their robustness to imperfections in the initial-state preparation and to the size of the system. Moreover, the asymptotic states are found to be strongly entangled making them interesting for further applications.
We propose a realizable experiment scheme to construct a one-dimensional synthetic magnetic flux lattice with spin-tensor-momentum coupled spin-1 atoms and explore its exotic topological states. Different from the Altland-Zirnbauer classification, we show that our system hosts a symmetryprotected phase protected by a magnetic group symmetry (M) and characterized by a Z2 topological invariant. In single-particle spectra, we show that the topological nontrivial phase supports two kinds of edge states, which include two (four) zero-energy edge modes in the absence (presence) of two-photon detunin…
We investigate the nonlinear scattering dynamics in interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensates under non-Hermitian dissipative conditions. We show that by carefully engineering a momentum-dependent atomic loss profile one can achieve matter-wave amplification through four wave mixing in a one-dimensional quasi free-space setup - a process that is forbidden in the counterpart Hermitian systems due to energy mismatch. Additionally, we show that similar effects lead to rich nonlinear dynamics in higher dimensions. Finally, we propose a physical realization for selectively tailoring the momentum…
The loss of ultracold trapped atoms due to deeply inelastic reactions has previously been taken into account in effective field theories for low-energy atoms by adding local anti-Hermitian terms to the effective Hamiltonian. Here we show that when multi-atom systems are considered, an additional modification is required in the equation governing the density matrix. We define an effective density matrix by tracing over the states containing high-momentum atoms produced by deeply inelastic reactions. We show that it satisfies a Lindblad equation, with local Lindblad operators determined by the l…
In this paper, we study the conditions under which on-site dissipations can induce non-Hermitian skin modes in non-Hermitian systems. When the original Hermitian Hamiltonian has spinless time-reversal symmetry, it is impossible to have skin modes; on the other hand, if the Hermitian Hamiltonian has spinful time-reversal symmetry, skin modes can be induced by on-site dissipations under certain circumstance. As a concrete example, we employ the Rice-Mele model to illustrate our results. Furthermore, we predict that the skin modes can be detected by the chiral tunneling effect, that is, the tunne…
We study a Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold atoms subject to a non-Hermitian spin-orbit coupling, where the system acquires non-Hermitian skin effect under the interplay of spin-orbit coupling and laser-induced atom loss. The presence of the non-Hermitian skin effect is confirmed through its key signatures in term of the spectral winding under the periodic boundary condition, the accumulation of eigen wavefunctions at boundaries under an open boundary condition, as well as bulk dynamics signaled by a directional flow. We show that the bulk dynamics in particular serves as a convenient sig…
Quantum phase slips are the primary excitations in one-dimensional superfluids and superconductors at low temperatures. They have been well characterized in most condensed-matter systems, and signatures of their existence has been recently observed in superfluids based on quantum gases too. In this review we briefly summarize the main results obtained on the investigation of phase slips from superconductors to quantum gases. In particular we focus our attention on recent experimental results of the dissipation in one-dimensional Bose superfluids flowing along a shallow periodic potential, whic…
Open physical systems with balanced loss and gain, described by non-Hermitian parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) reflection symmetric Hamiltonians, exhibit a transition which could engenders modes that exponentially decay or grow with time and thus spontaneously breaks the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry. Such $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transitions have attracted many interests because of their extraordinary behaviors and functionalities absent in closed systems. Here we report on the observation of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transitions by engineering time-periodic dissipation and coupling, whi…
Spin-orbit coupling is an essential mechanism underlying quantum phenomena such as the spin Hall effect and topological insulators. It has been widely studied in well-isolated Hermitian systems, but much less is known about the role dissipation plays in spin-orbit-coupled systems. Here, we implement dissipative spin-orbit-coupled bands filled with ultracold fermions, and observe parity-time symmetry breaking as a result of the competition between the spin-orbit coupling and dissipation. Tunable dissipation, introduced by state-selective atom loss, enables us to tune the energy gap and close it…
We investigate chiral symmetry breaking in a model of Dirac fermions with a complexified coupling constant whose imaginary part represents dissipation. We introduce a chiral chemical potential and observe that for real coupling a relativistic BCS-BEC crossover is realized. We solve the model in the mean-field approximation and construct the phase diagram as a function of the complex coupling. It is found that the dynamical mass increases under dissipation, although the chiral symmetry gets restored if dissipation exceeds a threshold.
Quantum optics and ultracold gases are established fields, but they almost do not overlap: the quantum nature of light is typically neglected in works on ultracold atoms. In our work the quantumness of both light and ultracold matter plays a key role. First, we show that light is a quantum nondemolition (QND) probe of many-body phases: they can be distinguished by correlations and full distribution functions (we consider bosons, fermions, and dipolar molecules). Light is not only sensitive to densities, but also to the matter-field interference. Second, we prove that the measurement backaction…

We introduce a method for the dissipative preparation of strongly correlated quantum states of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice via localized particle loss. The interplay of dissipation and interactions enables different types of dynamics. This ushers a new line of experimental methods to maintain the coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate or to deterministically generate macroscopically entangled quantum states.
In recent years, controlled dissipation has proven to be a useful tool for probing of a quantum system in the ultracold setup. In this paper we consider dynamics of bosons induced by a dissipative local defect. We address superfluid and supersolid phases close to half-filling that are ground states of an extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. To this end, we solve the master equation using the Gutzwiller approximation and find that in the superfluid phase repulsive nearest neighbour interactions can lead to enhanced dissipation processes. On the other hand, our mean-field approach indicates that t…
Quantum many-body systems are characterized by their correlations. While equal-time correlators and unequal-time commutators between operators are standard observables, the direct access to unequal-time anti-commutators poses a formidable experimental challenge. Here, we propose a general technique for measuring unequal-time anti-commutators using the linear response of a system to a non-Hermitian perturbation. We illustrate the protocol at the example of a Bose-Hubbard model, where the approach to thermal equilibrium in a closed quantum system can be tracked by measuring both sides of the flu…
We introduce a Ramsey pulse scheme which extracts the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian associated to an arbitrary Lindblad dynamics. We propose a realted protocol to measure via interferometry a generalised Loschmidt echo of a generic state evolving in time with the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian itself, and we apply the scheme to a one-dimensional weakly interacting Bose gas coupled to a stochastic atomic impurity. The Loschmidt echo is mapped into a functional integral from which we calculate the long-time decohering dynamics at arbitrary impurity strengths. For strong dissipation we uncover the phenome…
We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the …
We have realized a hybrid optomechanical system by coupling ultracold atoms to a micromechanical membrane. The atoms are trapped in an optical lattice, which is formed by retro-reflection of a laser beam from the membrane surface. In this setup, the lattice laser light mediates an optomechanical coupling between membrane vibrations and atomic center-of-mass motion. We observe both the effect of the membrane vibrations onto the atoms as well as the backaction of the atomic motion onto the membrane. By coupling the membrane to laser-cooled atoms, we engineer the dissipation rate of the membrane.…
The exploration of large-scale many-body phenomena in quantum materials has produced many important experimental discoveries, including novel states of entanglement, topology and quantum order as found for example in quantum spin ices, topological insulators and semimetals, complex magnets, and high-$T_c$ superconductors. Yet, the sheer scale of solid-state systems and the difficulty of exercising exacting control of their quantum mechanical degrees of freedom limit the pace of rational progress in advancing the properties of these and other materials. With extraordinary effort to counteract n…
We propose an ultracold-atom setting where a fermionic superfluidity with attractive s-wave interaction is uploaded in a non-Hermitian Lieb optical lattice. The existence of a real-energy flat band solution is revealed. We show that the interplay between the skin effect and flat-band localization leads to exotic localization properties. We develop a multiband mean-field description of this system and use both order parameters and superfluid weight to describe the phase transition. A relation between the superfluid weight and non-Hermitian quantum metric of the quantum states manifold is built.…
We investigate the ground state and quantum dynamics of an interacting bosonic chain with the nonreciprocal hopping. In sharp contrast to its Hermitian counterpart, the ground state can support Mott insulators in systems with noninteger filling due to the competition between nonreciprocal hopping and the on-site interaction. For the quantum dynamics, conservation laws for non-Hermitian systems manifest a stark difference from their Hermitian counterpart. In particular, for any Hermitian operator that commutes with the Hamiltonian operator, its expectation value is guaranteed to be nonconserved…
