The loss of ultracold trapped atoms due to deeply inelastic reactions has previously been taken into account in effective field theories for low-energy atoms by adding local anti-Hermitian terms to the effective Hamiltonian. Here we show that when multi-atom systems are considered, an additional modification is required in the equation governing the density matrix. We define an effective density matrix by tracing over the states containing high-momentum atoms produced by deeply inelastic reactions. We show that it satisfies a Lindblad equation, with local Lindblad operators determined by the local anti-Hermitian terms in the effective Hamiltonian. We use the Lindblad equation to derive the universal relation for the two-atom inelastic loss rate for fermions with two spin states and the universal relation for the three-atom inelastic loss rate for identical bosons.
Radiofrequency (RF)-dressed potentials are a promising technique for manipulating atomic mixtures, but so far little work has been undertaken to understand the collisions of atoms held within these traps. In this work, we dress a mixture of 85Rb and 87Rb with RF radiation, characterize the inelastic loss that occurs, and demonstrate species-selective manipulations. Our measurements show the loss is caused by two-body 87Rb+85Rb collisions, and we show the inelastic rate coefficient varies with detuning from the RF resonance. We explain our observations using quantum scattering calculations, whi…
Magnetic Feshbach resonances have allowed great success in the production of ultracold diatomic molecules from bi-alkali mixtures, but have so far eluded observation in mixtures of alkali and alkaline-earth-like atoms. Inelastic collisional properties of ultracold atomic systems exhibit resonant behavior in the vicinity of such resonances, providing a detection signature. We study magnetic field dependent inelastic effects via atom loss spectroscopy in an ultracold heteronuclear mixture of alkali $^6$Li in the ground state and alkaline-earth-like $^{174}$Yb in an excited electronic metastable …
We report the observation of a dimer-dimer inelastic collision resonance for ultracold Feshbach molecules made of bosonic sodium and rubidium atoms. This resonance, which we attribute to the crossing of the dimer-dimer threshold with a heteronuclear tetramer state, manifests itself as a pronounced inelastic loss peak of dimers when the interspecies scattering length between the constituent atoms is tuned. Near this resonance, a strong modification of the temperature dependence of the dimer-dimer scattering is observed. Our result provides insight into the heteronuclear four-body system consist…
Ultracold temperatures in dilute quantum gases opened the way to an exquisite control of matter at the quantum level. Here we focus on the control of ultracold atomic collisions using a laser to engineer their interactions at large interatomic distances. We show that the entrance channel of two colliding ultracold atoms can be coupled to a repulsive collisional channel by the laser light so that the overall interaction between the two atoms becomes repulsive: this prevents them to come close together and to undergo inelastic processes, thus protecting the atomic gases from unwanted losses. We …
Recent measurements of Efimov resonances in a number of ultracold atom species have revealed an unexpected universality, in which three-body scattering properties are determined by the van der Waals length of the two-body interaction potential. To investigate whether this universality extends to heteronuclear mixtures, we measure loss rate coefficients in an ultracold trapped gas of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms. We find an Efimov-like resonance in the rate of inelastic collisions between $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules and $^{87}$Rb atoms. However, we do not observe any Efimov-related res…
The Fano effect (U. Fano, Phys. Rev. \textbf{15},1866 (1961) shows that an inelastic scattering process can be suppressed when the output channel (OC) is coupled to an isolated bound state. In this paper we investigate the application of this effect for the suppression of two-body collisional losses of ultracold atoms. The Fano effect is originally derived via a first-order perturbation treatment for coupling between the incident channel (IC) and the OC. We generalize the Fano effect to systems with arbitrarily strong IC--OC couplings. We analytically prove that, in a system with one IC and on…
We report our experimental results on the collisional physics between non-S-state atoms (ytterbium (Yb), effectively a two-electron system, in the metastable ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state) and S-state atoms (lithium (Li), an alkali metal, in the ground state). At low magnetic fields, by measuring inelastic interspecies collisional losses in the double quantum degenerate mixture we reveal the strong dependence of the inelastic losses on the internal spin states of both species and suppressed losses in stretched state configurations. Increasing the magnetic field up to 800 G we further investigate th…
The control of the ultracold collisions between neutral atoms is an extensive and successful field of study. The tools developed allow for ultracold chemical reactions to be managed using magnetic fields, light fields and spin-state manipulation of the colliding particles among other methods. The control of chemical reactions in ultracold atom-ion collisions is a young and growing field of research. Recently, the collision energy and the ion electronic state were used to control atom-ion interactions. Here, we demonstrate spin-controlled atom-ion inelastic processes. In our experiment, both sp…
We numerically study the expansion dynamics of ultracold atoms in a one-dimensional disordered potential in the presence of a weak position measurement of the atoms. We specifically consider this position measurement to be realized by a combination of an external laser and a periodic array of optical microcavities along a waveguide. The position information is acquired through the scattering of a near-resonant laser photon into a specific eigenmode of one of the cavities. The time evolution of the atomic density in the presence of this light scattering mechanism is described within a Lindblad …
Correlation properties in ultracold Fermi gas with negative scattering length and its impact on the three-body recombination is analyzed. We find that Cooper pairing enhances the recombination rate in contrast to the decrease of this rate accompanying Bose-Einstein condensation in a Bose gas. This trend is characteristic for all interval of temperatures T<Tc.
We report on controlled doping of an ultracold Rb gas with single neutral Cs impurity atoms. Elastic two-body collisions lead to a rapid thermalization of the impurity inside the Rb gas, representing the first realization of an ultracold gas doped with a precisely known number of impurity atoms interacting via s-wave collisions. Inelastic interactions are restricted to a single three-body recombination channel in a highly controlled and pure setting, which allows to determine the Rb-Rb-Cs three-body loss rate with unprecedented precision. Our results pave the way for a coherently interacting h…
We present experimental results on the inelastic and elastic interspecies interactions between ytterbium (Yb) in the metastable ${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$ state loaded into a deep optical lattice and spin polarized lithium (Li) in its ground state. Focusing on the $m_J = 0$ magnetic sublevel of Yb(${}^3\mathrm{P}_2$), bias magnetic fields between 20 G and 800 G are investigated and significantly enhanced inelastic collision rates with high magnetic fields are found. In addition, by direct spectroscopy of the Yb Mott-insulator immersed in the Li Fermi gas an upper boundary of the background scattering …
We discuss Bragg scattering on both Bose and Fermi gases with strong short-range interactions in the deep inelastic regime of large wave vector transfer $q$, where the dynamic structure factor is dominated by a resonance near the free-particle energy $\hbarω=\varepsilon_{\bf q}=\hbar^2q^2/2m$. Using a systematic short-distance expansion, the structure factor at high momentum is shown to exhibit a nontrivial dependence on frequency characterized by two separate scaling regimes. First, for frequencies that differ from the single-particle energy by terms of order ${\cal O}(q)$ (i.e., small deviat…
Strongly-interacting systems consisting of particles that interact through a large scattering length satisfy universal relations that relate many of their central properties to the contact, which measures the number of pairs with small separations. We use the operator product expansion of quantum field theory to derive the universal relation for the inelastic 2-body loss rate. A simple universal relation between the loss rate and the contact is obtained by truncating the expansion after the lowest dimension operator. We verify the universal relation explicitly by direct calculations in the low…
We measure inelastic collisions between ultracold CaF molecules by combining two optical tweezers, each containing a single molecule. We observe collisions between $^2Σ$ CaF molecules in the absolute ground state $|X,v=0, N=0,F=0\rangle$, and in excited hyperfine and rotational states. In the absolute ground state, we find a two-body loss rate of $7(4) \times 10^{-11} \text{cm}^{3}/\text{s}$, which is below, but close to the predicted universal loss rate.
Quantum probes are atomic-sized devices mapping information of their environment to quantum mechanical states. By improving measurements and at the same time minimizing perturbation of the environment, they form a central asset for quantum technologies. We realize spin-based quantum probes by immersing individual Cs atoms into an ultracold Rb bath. Controlling inelastic spin-exchange processes between probe and bath allows mapping motional and thermal information onto quantum-spin states. We show that the steady-state spin-population is well suited for absolute thermometry, reducing temperatur…
A detailed study of the anharmonicity-induced resonances caused by the coupling of center-of-mass and relative motion is presented for a system of two ultracold atoms in single-well potentials. As has been confirmed experimentally, these inelastic confinement-induced resonances are of interest, since they can lead to coherent molecule formation, losses, and heating in ultracold atomic gases. A perturbative model is introduced to describe the resonance positions and the coupling strengths. The validity of the model and the behavior of the resonances for different confinement geometries are anal…
We have studied the associative ionization of a Rydberg atom and a ground state atom in an ultracold Rydberg gas. The measured scattering cross section is three orders of magnitude larger than the geometrical size of the produced molecule. This giant enhancement of the reaction kinetics is due to an efficient directed mass transport which is mediated by the Rydberg electron. We also find that the total inelastic scattering cross section is given by the geometrical size of the Rydberg electron's wavefunction.
We investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice and loaded into an optical resonator that is driven transversely. We derive an effective quantum master equation for weak atom-light coupling that can be brought into Lindblad form both in the bad and good cavity limits. In the so-called bad cavity regime, we find that the steady state is always that of infinite temperature, but that the relaxation dynamics can be highly non-trivial. For small hopping, the interplay between dissipation and strong interactions generally leads to anomalous diffusion i…
Under certain circumstances, three or more interacting particles may form bound states. While the general few-body problem is not analytically solvable, the so-called Efimov trimers appear for a system of three particles with resonant two-body interactions. The binding energies of these trimers are predicted to be universally connected to each other, independent of the microscopic details of the interaction. By exploiting a Feshbach resonance to widely tune the interactions between trapped ultracold lithium atoms, we find evidence for two universally connected Efimov trimers and their associat…
We study the transport properties of an ultracold gas of Bose-Einstein condensate that is coupled from a magnetic trap into a one-dimensional waveguide. Our theoretical approach to tackle this problem is based on the truncated Wigner method for which we assume the system to consist of two semi-infinite non-interacting leads and a finite interacting scattering region with two constrictions modelling an atomic quantum dot. The transmission is computed in the steady-state regime and we find a good agreement between truncated Wigner and Matrix-Product State calculations. We also identify clear sig…
We have successfully prepared an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and studied their interspecies Feshbach resonances. Using two different spin combinations, several s-wave and p-wave resonances are identified by observing a high inelastic loss and a temperature rising for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two s-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in the lowest energy level are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model and are used refining the ground…
We investigate the Kondo effect in an open quantum system, motivated by recent experiments with ultracold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms. Because of inelastic collisions and the associated atom losses, this system is described by a complex-valued Kondo interaction and provides a non-Hermitian extension of the Kondo problem. We show that the non-Hermiticity induces anomalous reversion of renormalization-group flows which violate the $g$-theorem due to non-unitarity and produce a quantum phase transition unique to non-Hermiticity. Furthermore, we exactly solve the non-Hermitian Kondo Hamiltonian us…
We use exact four-boson scattering equations in the momentum-space framework to study the universal properties of shallow Efimov tetramers and their dependence on the two-boson scattering length. We demonstrate that, in contrast to previous predictions, the shallow tetramer in a particular experimentally unexplored regime is not an unstable bound state but an inelastic virtual state. This leads to a resonant behaviour of the atom-trimer scattering length and thereby to a resonant enhancement of the trimer relaxation in ultracold atom-trimer mixtures.
We study collisions in an optically trapped, pure sample of ultracold Cs$_2$ molecules in various internal states. The molecular gas is created by Feshbach association from a near-degenerate atomic gas, with adjustable temperatures in the nanokelvin range. We identify several narrow loss resonances, which point to the coupling to more complex molecular states and may be interpreted as Feshbach resonances in dimer-dimer interactions. Moreover, in some molecular states we observe a surprising temperature dependence in collisional loss. This shows that the situation cannot be understood in terms …
We study the influence of quantum density fluctuations in ultracold atoms in an optical lattice on the scattering of matter waves. Such fluctuations are characteristic of the superfluid phase and vanish due to increased interactions in the Mott insulating phase. We employ an analytical treatment of the scattering and demonstrate that the fluctuations lead to incoherent processes, which we propose to observe via decoherence of the fringes in a Mach-Zender interferometer. In this way we extract the purely coherent part of the scattering. Further, we show that the quantum density fluctuations can…
We study three-body recombination in an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture. We first show theoretically that, for weak inter-species coupling, the loss rate is proportional to Tan's contact. Second, using a 7 Li/ 6 Li mixture we probe the recombination rate in both the thermal and dual superfluid regimes. We find excellent agreement with our model in the BEC-BCS crossover. At unitarity where the fermion-fermion scattering length diverges, we show that the loss rate is proportional the 4/3 power of the fermionic density. Our results demonstrate that impurity-induced losses can be used as a quantitati…
We study the evolution of a single BaRb$^+$ molecule while it continuously collides with ultracold Rb atoms. The initially weakly-bound molecule can undergo a sequence of elastic, inelastic, reactive, and radiative processes. We investigate these processes by developing methods for discriminating between different ion species, electronic states, and kinetic ion energy ranges. By comparing the measurements to model calculations we obtain a consistent description of the typical trajectory of the ion through the manifold of available atomic and molecular states. As a further result, we determine …
We report on experiments investigating the collisional properties of atoms at ultralow collision energies using an all-optical atom collider. By using a pair of optical tweezers, we can manipulate two ultracold atom clouds and collide them together at energies up to three orders of magnitude larger than their thermal energy. Our experiments measure the scattering of $\rm ^{87}Rb$, $\rm ^{40}K$, and $\rm ^{40}K$-$\rm ^{87}Rb$ collisions. The versatility of our collider allows us to probe both shape resonances and Feshbach resonances in any partial wave. As examples, we present experiments demon…
Ultracold dysprosium gases, with a magnetic moment ten times that of alkali atoms and equal only to terbium as the most magnetic atom, are expected to exhibit a multitude of fascinating collisional dynamics and quantum dipolar phases, including quantum liquid crystal physics. We report the first laser cooling and trapping of half a billion Dy atoms using a repumper-free magneto-optical trap (MOT) and continuously loaded magnetic confinement, and we characterize the trap recycling dynamics for bosonic and fermionic isotopes. The first inelastic collision measurements in the few partial wave, 10…
We study inelastic two-body relaxation in a spin-polarized ultracold Fermi gas in the presence of a p-wave Feshbach resonance. It is shown that in reduced dimensionalities, especially in the quasi-one-dimensional case, the enhancement of the inelastic rate constant on approach to the resonance is strongly suppressed compared to three dimensions. This may open promising paths for obtaining novel many-body states.
The collision of molecules at ultracold temperatures is of great importance for understanding the chemical interactions at the quantum regime. While much theoretical work has been devoted to this, experimental data are only available sparsely mainly due to the difficulty in producing ground-state molecules at ultracold temperatures. We report here the creation of optically trapped samples of ground-state bosonic sodium-rubidium molecules with precisely controlled internal states and, enabled by this, a detailed study on the inelastic loss with and without the NaRb + NaRb $\rightarrow$ Na$_2$ +…
Atomic quantum gases in optical lattices serve as a versatile testbed for important concepts of modern condensed-matter physics. The availability of methods to characterize strongly correlated phases is crucial for the study of these systems. Diffraction techniques to reveal long-range spatial structure, which may complement \emph{in situ} detection methods, have been largely unexplored. Here we experimentally demonstrate that Bragg diffraction of neutral atoms can be used for this purpose. Using a one-dimensional Bose gas as a source of matter waves, we are able to infer the spatial ordering …
We propose a method to suppress the chemical reactions between ultracold bosonic ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules based on optical shielding. By applying a laser with a frequency blue-detuned from the transition between the lowest rovibrational level of the electronic ground state $X^1Σ^+ (v_X=0, j_X=0)$, and the long-lived excited level $b^3Π_0 (v_b=0, j_b=1)$, the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between the colliding molecules can be engineered, leading to a dramatic suppression of reactive and photoinduced inelastic collisions, for both linear and circular laser polarizations.…
Ultracold gases of three distinguishable particles with large scattering lengths are expected to show rich few-body physics related to the Efimov effect. We have created three different mixtures of ultracold 6Li atoms and weakly bound 6Li2 dimers consisting of atoms in three different hyperfine states and studied their inelastic decay via atom-dimer collisions. We have found resonant enhancement of the decay due to the crossing of Efimov-like trimer states with the atom-dimer continuum in one mixture as well as minima of the decay in another mixture, which we interpret as a suppression of exch…
Understanding ultracold collisions involving molecules is of fundamental importance for current experiments, where inelastic collisions typically limit the lifetime of molecular ensembles in optical traps. Here we present a broad study of optically trapped ultracold RbCs molecules in collisions with one another, in reactive collisions with Rb atoms, and in nonreactive collisions with Cs atoms. For experiments with RbCs alone, we show that by modulating the intensity of the optical trap, such that the molecules spend 75% of each modulation cycle in the dark, we partially suppress collisional lo…
We investigate inelastic collision dynamics of a single cold ion in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We observe rapid ion-atom-atom three-body recombination leading to formation of weakly bound molecular ions followed by secondary two-body molecule-atom collisions quenching the rovibrational states towards deeper binding energies. In contrast to previous studies exploiting hybrid ion traps, we work in an effectively field-free environment and generate a free low-energy ionic impurity directly from the atomic ensemble via Rydberg excitation and ionization. This allows us to implement an energy-resol…
The ultracold mixture of \Na and \Rb atoms has become an important system for investigating physics in Bose-Bose atomic mixtures and for forming ultracold ground-state polar molecules. In this work, we provide an improved characterization of the most commonly used Feshbach resonance near 347.64 G between \Na and \Rb in their absolute ground states. We form Feshbach molecules using this resonance and measure their binding energies by dissociating them via magnetic field modulation. We use the binding energies to refine the singlet and triplet potential energy curves, using coupled-channel bound…
We study cold heteronuclear atom ion collisions by immersing a trapped single ion into an ultracold atomic cloud. Using ultracold atoms as reaction targets, our measurement is sensitive to elastic collisions with extremely small energy transfer. The observed energy-dependent elastic atom-ion scattering rate deviates significantly from the prediction of Langevin but is in full agreement with the quantum mechanical cross section. Additionally, we characterize inelastic collisions leading to chemical reactions at the single particle level and measure the energy-dependent reaction rate constants. …
