We establish that many fundamental concepts and techniques in quantum field theory and collider physics can be naturally understood and unified through a simple new geometric language. The idea is to equip the space of collider events with a metric, from which other geometric objects can be rigorously defined. Our analysis is based on the energy mover's distance, which quantifies the "work" required to rearrange one event into another. This metric, which operates purely at the level of observable energy flow information, allows for a clarified definition of infrared and collinear safety and related concepts. A number of well-known collider observables can be exactly cast as the minimum distance between an event and various manifolds in this space. Jet definitions, such as exclusive cone and sequential recombination algorithms, can be directly derived by finding the closest few-particle approximation to the event. Several area- and constituent-based pileup mitigation strategies are naturally expressed in this formalism as well. Finally, we lift our reasoning to develop a precise distance between theories, which are treated as collections of events weighted by cross sections. In all of these various cases, a better understanding of existing methods in our geometric language suggests interesting new ideas and generalizations.
We discuss aspects of open and hidden charm production in deuterium-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We describe calculations of the total $c \bar c$ cross section and the charm quark transverse momentum distributions. We next explain how shadowing and moderate nuclear absorption can explain the PHENIX $J/ψ$ dAu/$pp$ ratios and predict the combined effect of shadowing and absorption in 6.2 TeV d+Pb collisions.
We consider the production of the open charm and J/psi mesons in heavy ion collisions at BNL RHIC. We discuss several recently developed pictures for J/psi production and argue that a measurement at RHIC energies is crucial for disentangling these different descriptions.
We discuss production of charmed mesons and J/Psi in p(d)A collisions at high energies. We argue that when the saturation scale Qs characterizing the parton density in a nucleus exceeds the quark mass m, the naive perturbation theory breaks down. Consequently, we calculate a process of heavy quark production in both open and hidden channels in the framework of the parton saturation model (Color Glass Condensate). We demonstrate that at RHIC such description is in agreement with experimental data on charm production.
Electro-production of several pentaquark states is investigated in this paper. eSTARlight package is adapted to study the electro-production of $J/ψ$ and $Υ(1S)$ via pentaquark $P_c$ and $P_b$ resonance channels in $e p \to e eJ/ψp$ and $e p \to eΥ(1S) p$ scattering processes at proposed electron-ion colliders (EICs). The results in this paper are compared to the non-resonance $t$-channels, which is described in pomeron exchange model in our studies. Some pseudo-rapidity distributions rapidity distributions of $J/ψ$ and $Υ(1S)$ are presented for proposed EICs including EicC and EIC-US. It is f…

Recent developments in the theoretical evaluation of charmonium production in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions (URHIC's) are discussed. In particular, the consequences of equilibrium properties of open and hidden charm states -- accessible, {\it e.g.}, in QCD lattice gauge calculations -- are assessed. These include abundances as well as formation and dissociation rates of charmonia in both hadronic and quark-gluon matter.
In the framework of the quark combination, we derive the yield formulas and study the yield ratios of the hidden-charm pentaquark states in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We propose some interesting yield ratios which clearly exhibit the production relationships between different hidden-charm pentaquark states. We show how to employ a specific quark combination model to evaluate the yields of exotic $P_c^+(4380)$, $P_c^+(4450)$ and their partners on the basis of reproducing the yields of normal identified hadrons, and execute the calculations in central Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{…
The cross section for formation in $γ+ p$ collisions of the recently found hidden-charm pentaquark states $P_c(4380)$ and $P_c(4450)$ is discussed and estimated. The studies of these resonances in photon beam experiments can be complementary to those in the LHCb experiment setting, and may be more advantageous for measurement of their additional decay channels. It is pointed out that both the relative importance of such decays and the yield of the resonances in the $γ+ p$ collisions are sensitive to the internal dynamics of the pentaquarks and can resolve between theoretical models. Specific n…
We propose a lepto-baryogenesis mechanism in which the non-zero B-L of the universe is produced in out-of-equilibrium, lepton number and CP violating scattering processes that convert ordinary particles into particles of some hidden sector. In particular, we consider the processes $l ϕ> l' ϕ', \bar l' \bar phi'$ mediated by the heavy Majorana neutrinos $N$ of the seesaw mechanism, where $l$ and $ϕ$ are ordinary lepton and Higgs doublets and $l'$, $ϕ'$ their hidden counterparts. Such a leptogenesis mechanism is effective even if the reheating temperature is much smaller than the heavy neutrino …
The possibility of observing formation of hidden-charm pentaquarks as $s$-channel resonances in antiproton - deuteron collisions is discussed. It is pointed out that the masses of the reported by LHCb pentaquark resonances in the $J/ψ\, p$ channel are very close to a special value of the mass at which formation of a pentaquark by antiproton incident on a deuteron at rest requires exactly the same momentum of the $\bar p$ as needed for the formation in the $s$ channel of the charmonium resonance in $\bar p p$ collisions with the proton being at rest. For this reason the former process can be ra…
We discuss a number of cold nuclear matter effects that can modify open heavy flavor and quarkonium production in proton-nucleus collisions and could thus also affect their production in nucleus-nucleus collisions, in addition to hot quark-gluon plasma production. We show some results for $p+$Pb collisions at sqrt s = 5 TeV at the LHC.
The notion of "hadronic freedom" is introduced based on the vector manifestation of hidden local symmetry and is used to suggest that the dileptons measured in relativistic heavy-ion collisions do not provide {\em direct} information on the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and hence on the mechanism for mass generation of light-quark hadrons. We give arguments how the dileptons emitted from those vector mesons whose masses are shifted à la Brown-Rho (BR) scaling by the vacuum change in temperature -- as in heavy-ion collisions -- and/or density -- as in cold compressed matter -- could b…
The visible and dark sectors of particle physics can be connected via kinetic mixing between ordinary and hidden photons. If the latter is light its production in high energy collisions of ordinary particles proceeds via oscillations with ordinary photons similarly to the neutrino processes. Generically, the experiments are insensitive to mass of the hidden vector, if it is lighter than 1\,MeV, and it does not decay into $e^+e^-$-pair. Still, one can use the missing energy and scattering off the detector material as signatures to search for the light vectors. Presence of media suppresses produ…
I discuss the production mechanism of hidden-flavored hadrons at high energy. Using $e^+e^-$ collisions and light-meson pair production in high energy exclusive processes, I demonstrate that hidden quark pairs do not necessarily participate in short-distance hard scattering. Implications are then explored in a few examples. Finally, I discuss the production mechanism of $X(3872)$ in hadron collisions, where some misunderstandings have arisen in the literature.
In this paper we investigate the possibility of searching for the hidden-bottom pentaquark states in photon-induced interactions at the LHC. We consider the presence of the $P_b$ resonance in the $s$-channel of the $γp \rightarrow Υp$ reaction and estimate its contribution for the exclusive $Υ$ photoproduction in the fixed-target mode of the LHC. Predictions for the total cross sections, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are derived using the STARlight Monte Carlo considering $Pb-p$, $Pb-He$ and $Pb-Ar$ fixed-target collisions at the LHC. Our results indicate that the presence of …
The hidden local symmetry effective theory, Wilsonian matched to QCD at a matching scale near the chiral scale $\sim 4πf_π$ as formulated by Harada and Yamawaki, presents a scenario drastically different from the standard scenario of heavy-ion collisions in that as the temperature approaches the critical temperature $T_c$ of chiral restoration from below, the mass of the vector mesons and their widths go to zero in the chiral limit or nearly zero otherwise, proportionally to some power of the quark condensate at what is called "vector manifestation (VM) fixed point". This scenario makes a stri…
We discuss aspects of open and hidden charm production in hadron-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We first discuss the extraction of the total charm cross section in lower energy collisions and how it compares to next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculations. We then describe calculations of the transverse momentum distributions and their agreement with the shape of the measured STAR transverse momentum distributions. We next explain how shadowing and moderate nuclear absorption can explain the PHENIX $J/ψ$ dAu/$pp$ ratios.
The study of multiparticle dynamics in hadron-hadron collisions at Tevatron and LHC could provide useful information on new physics in addition to the expected signatures on the transverse plane. We suggest that an analysis of inclusive correlations between emitted particles in $pp$ inelastic collisions, and factorial moments of multiplicity distributions, may be helpful in uncovering (un)particles from Hidden Sectors, using underlying events tagged by hard products like high $p_T$ leptons and photons, and applying stringent selection criteria like event shape variables, etc
The Gauss law constraint in the Hamiltonian form of the $SU(2)$ gauge theory of gluons is satisfied by any functional of the gauge invariant tensor variable $ϕ^{ij} = B^{ia} B^{ja}$. Arguments are given that the tensor $G_{ij} = (ϕ^{-1})_{ij}\,\det B$ is a more appropriate variable. When the Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of $ϕ$ or $G$, the quantity $Γ^i_{jk}$ appears. The gauge field Bianchi and Ricci identities yield a set of partial differential equations for $Γ$ in terms of $G$. One can show that $Γ$ is a metric-compatible connection for $G$ with torsion, and that the curvature tensor o…
Dark Matter (DM) models providing possible alternative solutions to the small- scale crisis of standard cosmology are nowadays of growing interest. We consider DM interacting with light hidden fermions via well motivated fundamental operators showing the resultant matter power spectrum is suppressed on subgalactic scales within a plausible parameter region. Our basic description of the evolution of cosmological perturbations relies on a fully consistent first principles derivation of a perturbed Fokker-Planck type equation, generalizing existing literature. The cosmological perturbation of the…
Interpretation of long-range rapidity correlations in terms of the fluctuating rapidity density distribution of the system created in high-energy collisions is proposed. When applied to recent data of the STAR coll., it shows a substantial asymmetric component in the shape of this system in central Au-Au collisions, implying that boost invariance is violated on the event-by-event basis even at central rapidity. This effect may seriously influence the hydrodynamic expansion of the system.
Models and experimental effort concerning open and hidden charm production in nuclear collisions discussed at Cern Workshop in December 99 are reviewed. The most recent development is also mentioned.
New phenomena involving pseudorapidity and azimuthal correlations among final state particles in $pp$ collisions at the LHC can hint at the existence of hidden sectors beyond the Standard Model. In this paper we rely on a correlated-cluster picture of multiparticle production, which was shown to account for the ridge effect, to assess the effect of a hidden sector on three-particle correlations concluding that there is a potential signature of new physics that can be directly tested by experiments using well-known techniques.
Production of open and hidden charm hadrons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model. Charmed quarks and antiquarks are assumed to be created at the initial stage of the reaction and their number is conserved during the evolution of the system. They are distributed among open and hidden charm hadrons at the hadronization stage in accordance with laws of statistical mechanics. The model is in excellent agreement with the experimental data on J/psi production in lead-lead collisions at CERN SPS and predicts strong enhancement of the open charm multiplicity o…
Intrigued by some features of a small but significant fraction of the multi-muon events recently published by the CDF collaboration, we show an explicit attempt to describe them in terms of a light scalar singlet $ϕ$ which communicates with the standard quarks either through a heavy scalar or a heavy fermion exchange. As suggested in arXiv:0810.7530, the singlet $ϕ$ has a chain decay into a final state made of four $τ\barτ$ pairs. We can simulate most of the muon properties of the selected sample of events. Some of these properties adhere rather well to the already published data; others shoul…
We investigate production of ϕmesons and Ξbaryons in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Reactions on strange particles acting as a catalyser are proposed to interpret the high observed ϕyields in HADES experiments as well as the energy dependence of the widths of ϕrapidity spectra in collisions at the SPS energies. It is argued that the enhancement of Ξ- yield observed by HADES is even higher than originally reported if effects of the experimental centrality trigger are taken into account. Cross sections for new hadronic processes that could produce Ξ- are reviewed.
We extend General Relativity by promoting Planck scale and the cosmological constant into integration constants, interpreted as fluxes of $4$-forms hiding in the theory. When we include the charges of the $4$-forms, these `constants' can vary discretely from region to region. We explain how the cosmological constant problem can be solved in this new framework. When the cosmological constant picks up contributions from two different $4$-forms, with an irrational ratio of charges, the spectrum of its values is a very fine discretuum. When the charges are mutually irrational, $\frac{2κ_{\tt eff}^…
A possible use of forward proton tagging detectors at the LHC in the context of heavy ion interactions is discussed. It is shown that signals registered in such detectors are sensitive to the geometry of the collision. A method of the impact parameter and the collision asymmetry reconstruction on the event-by-event basis is proposed and its performance is studied with Monte Carlo simulations.
Today it is widely believed that $s$-channel excitation of an on-shell~$W$ boson, commonly known as the Glashow resonance, can be initiated in matter only by the electron antineutrino in the process $\barν_ee^-\rightarrow W^-$ at the laboratory energy around~6.3~PeV. In this paper we argue that the Glashow resonance within the Standard Model also occurs in neutrino--nucleus collisions. The main conclusions are as follows. 1)~The Glashow resonance can be excited by both~neutrinos and~antineutrinos of all the three flavors scattering in the Coulomb field of a nucleus. 2)~The Glashow resonance in…
The processes of open and hidden charm production in $NN$ collisions and of open charm production in $γN$ collisions are studied. The near-threshold cross section is predicted and polarization phenomena are calculated in frame of an effective Lagrangian approach.
In this paper, we consider the possibility that a new stage of matter, stemming from hidden/dark sectors beyond the Standard Model, to be formed in $pp$ collisions at the LHC, can significantly modify the correlations among final-state particles. In particular, two-particle azimuthal correlations are studied by means of a Fourier series sensitive to the near-side ridge effect while assuming that hidden/dark particles decay on top of the conventional parton shower. Then, new (fractional) harmonic terms should be included in the Fourier analysis of the azimuthal anisotropies, encoding the hypoth…
The production of particles with double, triple and hidden charm in heavy ion collisions is studied in the framework of the statistical coalescence model. According to the postulates of the model, the charm quark-antiquark pairs are created at the initial stage of a heavy ion reaction in hard parton collisions. The amount of charm is assumed to be unchanged at later stages. The charm (anti)quarks are distributed among different hadron species at hadronization according to the laws of statistical physics. Several approaches to the statistical treatment of charm hadronization are considered. The…
Production of open and hidden charm hadrons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model (SCM). At hadronization, the charmed (anti)quarks are distributed among open and hidden charm hadrons in accordance with laws of statistical mechanics. Important special cases: a system with a small number of charmed quark-antiquark pairs and charm hadronization in a subsystem of t…
Event geometry and initial state correlations have been invoked as possible explanations of long range azimuthal correlations observed in high multiplicity p+p and p+Pb collisions. We study the rapidity dependence of initial state momentum correlations and event-by-event geometry in $\sqrt{s}=5.02~\rm{TeV}$ p+Pb collisions within the 3+1D IP-Glasma model~\cite{Schenke:2016ksl}, where the longitudinal structure is governed by JIMWLK rapidity evolution of the incoming nuclear gluon distributions. We find that the event geometry is correlated across large rapidity intervals whereas initial state …
We explore parton collisional effects on the conversion of geometry eccentricities into azimuthal anisotropies in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV using a multi-phase transport model. The initial eccentricity $\varepsilon_{n}$ (n = 2,3) and flow harmonics $v_{n}$ (n = 2,3) are investigated as a function of the number of parton collisions ($N_{coll}$) during the source evolution of partonic phase. It is found that partonic collisions leads to generate elliptic flow $v_{2}$ and triangular flow $v_{3}$ in Pb+Pb collisions. On the other hand, partonic collisions also result in an evo…
We present a simple way to construct 3D initial conditions for relativistic heavy-ion collisions based on the Glauber collision geometry. Local energy and momentum conservation conditions are imposed to set non-trivial constraints on our parameterizations of longitudinal profiles for the system's initial energy density and flow velocity. After calibrating parameters with charged hadron rapidity distributions in central Au+Au collisions, we test model predictions for particle rapidity distributions in d+Au and peripheral Au+Au collisions in the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at Relativistic Hea…
Quarkonium production has been considered as a tool to study the medium formed in high energy nuclear collisions, assuming that the formation of a hot and dense environment modifies the production pattern observed in elementary collisions. The basic features measured there are the relative fractions of hidden to open heavy flavor and the relative fractions of the different hidden heavy flavor states. Hence the essential question is if and how these quantities are modified in nuclear collisions. We show how the relevant data must be calibrated, i.e., what reference has to be used, in order to d…
There are a large number of physics programs one can explore in electron-nucleus collisions at a future electron-ion collider. Collision geometry is very important in these studies, while the measurement for an event-by-event geometric control is rarely discussed in the prior deep inelastic scattering experiments off a nucleus. This paper seeks to provide some detailed studies on the potential of tagging collision geometries through forward neutron multiplicity measurements with a zero degree calorimeter. This type of geometry handle, if achieved, can be extremely beneficial in constraining nu…
Assuming fractality of hadronic constituents, we argue that asymmetry of space-time can be induced in the ultra-relativistic interactions of hadrons and nuclei. The asymmetry is expressed in terms of the anomalous fractal dimensions of the colliding objects. Besides state of motion, the relativistic principle is applied to the state of asymmetry as well. Such realization of relativity concerns scale dependence of physical laws emerging at small distances. We show that induced asymmetries of space-time are a priori not excluded by the Michelson's experiment even at large scales.
We develop a systematic framework for the study of the initial collision geometry fluctuations in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and investigate how they evolve through different stages of the fireball history and translate into final particle momentum anisotropies. We find in our event-by-event analysis that only the few lowest momentum anisotropy parameters survive after the hydrodynamical evolution of the system. The geometry of the produced medium is found to be affected by the pre-equilibrium evolution of the medium and the thermal smearing of the discretized event-by-event initial con…
We compare and analyse Bose-Einstein correlation data for $π^+ p$ and $K^+ p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=22\ GeV$ obtained by the NA22-Collaboration and data for $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=630\ GeV$ obtained by the UA1-Minimum-Bias-Collaboration. Using a parametrization for a longitudinally expanding source, we observe that correlation lengths and radii extracted from fits to the data change significantly if one goes from the NA22- to the UA1-data: the transverse radius of the chaotic source increases by about $50\%$ while the correlation lengths in longitudinal and transverse directions …
The influence of the underlying nucleon-nucleon collision geometry on evaluations of the nuclear overlap function ($T_{AB}$) and number of binary collisions ($N_{coll}$) is studied. A narrowing of the spatial distribution of the hard-partons with large light-cone fraction $x$ in nucleons leads to a downward correction for $N_{coll}$ and $T_{AB}$, which in turn, results in an upward correction for the nuclear modification factor $R_{AB}$. The size of this correction is estimated for several experimentally motivated nucleon-nucleon overlap functions for hard-partons. It is found to be significan…
We demonstrate a possible existence of a finite formation time of strongly interacting plasma in nuclear collisions at RHIC from recent experimental data. To show this, we use a simple model based on Monte Carlo simulation of nucleus-nucleus collisions with realistic nuclear density distribution. The most striking feature of the experimental data - an absence of absorption of high transverse momentum pions in the reaction plane direction for mid-peripheral collisions - points to the presence of a surface zone with no absorption and strong suppression in the inner core. A natural interpretation…
We study one possible production mechanism for hidden charm pentaquark in e+e- collision, where it is produced via a color-octet c \bar c pair fragmentation. The pentaquark production at B factory energy is dominated by e+e- to c \bar c g to Pc + X. At Z^0 pole, for the pentaquark production, there are several partonic processes playing significant role. Our results show that it is possible to search for the direct pentaquark production signal at e+e- colliders, which is important to understand the properties of pentaquark.
We use the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model to simulate Pb+Pb collisions. In the freeze out geometry of non-central Pb+Pb collisions we observe a tilt of the particle emission zone in the collision plane away from the beam axis. We find that the magnitude of this tilt depends on the scale at which the distribution is measured. We quantify this "twisting" behavior with a parameterization and propose to measure it experimentally via azimuthally sensitive Hanbury-Brown Twiss correlations. Additionally we show that the twist is related to the emission of particles from di…

We introduce the concepts of participant triangularity and triangular flow in heavy-ion collisions, analogous to the definitions of participant eccentricity and elliptic flow. The participant triangularity characterizes the triangular anisotropy of the initial nuclear overlap geometry and arises from event-by-event fluctuations in the participant-nucleon collision points. In studies using a multi-phase transport model (AMPT), a triangular flow signal is observed that is proportional to the participant triangularity and corresponds to a large third Fourier coefficient in two-particle azimuthal …
We investigate here the particle acceleration and high energy collision in the Kerr geometry containing a naked singularity. We show that the center of mass energy of collision between two particles, dropped in from a finite but arbitrarily large distance along the axis of symmetry is arbitrarily large, provided the deviation of the angular momentum parameter from the mass is very small for the Kerr naked singularity. The collisions considered here are between particles, one of them ingoing and the other one being initially ingoing but which later emerges as an outgoing particle, after it suff…
We study within the IP-Glasma and two-component MC-Glauber models the effects of initial state geometry and fluctuations on multiplicities and eccentricities for several collision species at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These include copper-gold (Cu+Au), gold-gold (Au+Au), and uranium-uranium (U+U) collisions. The multiplicity densities per participant pair are very similar in all systems studied. Ellipticities vary strongly between collision systems, most significantly for central collisions, while fluctuation driven odd moments vary little between systems. Event-by-event distr…
We apply the successful Monte Carlo Glauber and IP-Glasma initial state models of heavy ion collisions to the much smaller size systems produced in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and deuteron- nucleus collisions. We observe a significantly greater sensitivity of the initial state geometry to details of multi-particle production in these models compared to nucleus-nucleus collisions. In particular, we find that the size of the system produced in p+A collisions is very similar to the one produced in p+p collisions, and predict comparable Hanbury-Brown-Twiss radii in the absence of flow in both sy…
We derive expressions for various correlators of the gauge field and find the propagators in Hamiltonian dynamics which employs a new gauge $A^τ=0$. This gauge is a part of the wedge form of relativistic dynamics suggested earlier as a tool for the study of quantum dynamics in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We prove that the gauge is completely fixed. The gauge field is quantized and the field of radiation and the longitudinal fields are unambiguously separated. The new gauge puts the quark and gluon fields of the colliding hadrons in one Hilbert space and thus allows one to avoid fa…
We suggest that the ultrarelativistic collisions of heavy ions provide the simplest situation for the study of strong interactions which can be understood from first principles and without any model assumptions about the microscopic structure of the colliding nuclei. We argue that the boost-invariant geometry of the collision, and the existence of hard partons in the final states, both supported by the data, make a sufficient basis for the quantum theory of the phenomenon. We conclude that the quantum nature of the entire process is defined by its global geometry, which is enforced by a macros…
A method is proposed to measure the relative azimuthal angle distributions involving two or more event planes of different order in heavy ion collisions using a Fourier analysis technique. The analysis procedure is demonstrated for correlations involving two and three event planes (Phi_n, Phi_m and Phi_h). The Fourier coefficients of these distributions are found to coincide with previously proposed correlators, such as cos(6Phi_2-6Phi_3) and cos(Phi_1+2Phi_2-3Phi_3) etc, hence the method provides a natural framework for studying these correlators at the same time. Using a Monte Carlo Glauber …
