Intrigued by some features of a small but significant fraction of the multi-muon events recently published by the CDF collaboration, we show an explicit attempt to describe them in terms of a light scalar singlet $ϕ$ which communicates with the standard quarks either through a heavy scalar or a heavy fermion exchange. As suggested in arXiv:0810.7530, the singlet $ϕ$ has a chain decay into a final state made of four $τ\barτ$ pairs. We can simulate most of the muon properties of the selected sample of events. Some of these properties adhere rather well to the already published data; others should allow a decisive test of the proposed interpretation. Assuming that the test is positively passed, we show how the PAMELA excess can be fitted by the annihilation of a TeV Dark Matter particle that communicates with the Standard Model via the new light singlet(s).
The uncertainties in estimating the hadronic production of the $B_c$ meson are studied under the framework of the complete $α_s^4$ approach of the perturbative QCD and the gluon-gluon fusion mechanism. Quantitative comparisons on the production at TEVATRON and LHC are made. Considering the detectors at TEVATRON and LHC, we have also estimated the production with proper kinematic cuts. Based on the results, we conclude that the experimental studies of the $B_c$ meson at the two colliders will be complimentary and stimulative. We find that as c.m. energy is increasing from RUN-I to RUN-II at TEV…
We present the status of the MUonE experimental proposal which aims at determining the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon g-2 by measuring the hadronic part of the photon vacuum polarization in the spacelike region. The challenges posed by this measurement on the detector, the proposed solution, and the status of this proposal will be discussed.
In the framework of the k_T-factorization QCD approach we consider the production of b quark pairs in p\bar p collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron. We investigate the dependence of the b quark, B meson and decay muon differential cross sections on the different forms of unintegrated gluon distributions. The analysis also covers the azimuthal correlations between the b and \bar b quarks and their decay muons. Our theoretical results agree well with recent data taken by the D0 and CDF collaborations at Tevatron. Finally, we present our predictions for muon-muon and muon-jet cross sections at the …
In view of the current 3 - 4 $σ$ deviation between theoretical and experimental values for the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, we review the ongoing efforts in constraining the hadronic light-by-light contribution to $a_μ$ by using dispersive techniques combined with a dedicated experimental program to obtain the required hadronic input.
The Standard Model prediction for muon-electron scattering beyond leading order requires the inclusion of QCD contributions which cannot be computed perturbatively. At next-to- and next-to-next-to-leading order, they arise from one- and two-loop diagrams with hadronic vacuum polarization insertions in the photon propagator. We present their evaluation using the dispersive approach with hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data and estimate their uncertainty. We find that these corrections are crucial for the analysis of future high-precision muon-electron scattering data, like those of the recently …
Under the assumption of total absorption and dominance of the imaginary part of the scattering amplitude, we present a sum rule for any hadronic elastic differential cross-section ${dσ}\over{dt}$: the dimensionless quantity ${{1}\over{2}}\int (dt)\sqrt{{{1}\over π}{{dσ}\over{dt}}} \to 1$, at asymptotic energies. Experimental data from ISR and Tevatron confirm a trend towards its saturation and some estimates are presented for LHC. Its universality and further consequences for the nature of absorption in QCD based models for elastic and total cross-sections are explored.
We apply Bogoliubov compensation principle to the gauge electro-weak interaction to demonstrate a spontaneous generation of anomalous three-boson gauge invariant effective interaction. The non-trivial solution of compensation equations uniquely defines values of parameters of the theory and the form-factor of the anomalous interaction. The contribution of this interaction to running EW coupling $α_{ew}(p^2)$ gives its observable value $α_{ew}(M_W^2)=0.0374$ in satisfactory agreement to the experiment. The anomalous three-boson interaction gives natural explanation of the well-known discrepancy…
We review the status of the QCD corrected cross sections and kinematic distributions for the production of a Higgs boson in association with top quark or bottom quark pairs at the Fermilab Tevatron and at the LHC. Results for b-bbar-H production are presented in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model, where the rates can be greatly enhanced relative to the Standard Model rates. We place particular emphasis on theoretical uncertainties due to renormalization and factorization scale dependence and on the uncertainties coming from the Parton Distribution Functions.
We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of top--antitop-quark pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and at the LHC. Results for integrated and differential cross sections are presented. We find a significant reduction of the scale dependence. In most cases the corrections are below 20% indicating that the perturbative expansion is well under control. Moreover, the forward--backward charge asymmetry of the top-quark, which is analyzed at the Tevatron, is studied at next-to-leading order. We find large corrections suggesting that…
Associated production of a baryonic Z' boson with the W boson can account for the excess in Wjj production observed by the CDF collaboration at the Tevatron. We analyze other possible channels of this Z' at the Tevatron and at the LHC, including γZ' and Z Z' with the Z' -> jj. We show that the chances of confirming this baryonic Z' is better at the Tevatron than at the LHC because of the faster growing backgrounds at the LHC. Unfortunately the current systematic uncertainties of the order of 10% cannot yield any significant excess in both γZ' and Z Z' channels at the Tevatron and also at the L…
We propose a novel approach to determine the leading hadronic corrections to the muon g-2. It consists in a measurement of the effective electromagnetic coupling in the space-like region extracted from Bhabha scattering data. We argue that this new method may become feasible at flavor factories, resulting in an alternative determination potentially competitive with the accuracy of the present results obtained with the dispersive approach via time-like data.
We evaluate the hadronic contribution to the $g-2$ of the muon by deriving the low-energy limit of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and computing in this way the hadronic vacuum polarization. The low-energy limit is a non-local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model that has all the parameters fixed from QCD, and the only experimental input used is the confinement scale that is known from measurements of hadronic physics. Our estimations provide a novel analytical alternative to the current lattice computations and we find that our result is close to the similar computation performed from experimental da…
The hadronic light-by-light contribution to a_{mu}, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, is discussed from the point of view of an effective low-energy theory. As an application, the coefficient of the leading logarithm arising from the two-loop graphs involving two anomalous vertices is computed, and found to be positive. This corresponds to a positive sign for the pion-pole contribution to the hadronic light-by-light correction to a_{mu}, and to a sizeable reduction of the discrepancy between the present experimental value of a_{mu} and its theoretical counterpart in the standard model…
Contributions of hadronic effects to the muonium physics and anomalous magnetic moment of muon are considered. Special attention is paid to higher-order effects and the uncertainty related to the hadronic contribution to the hyperfine structure interval in the ground state of muonium.
There are indications that hadronic loops in some electroweak observables are almost saturated by parton level effects. Taking this as the hypothesis for this work, we propose a genuine parton level estimate of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, a_mu (LBL,had). Our quark mass definitions and values are motivated in detail, and the simplicity of our approach allows for a transparent error estimate. For infinitely heavy quarks our treatment is exact, while for asymptotically small quark masses a_mu (LBL,had) is overestimated. Interpolating, thi…
The forward-backward asymmetry A_{FB}^t in top quark production at the Tevatron has been seen to be anomalously large both by CDF and D0. Parton-level asymmetries as large as 50%, with a large error bar, have been extracted from the data. It is important to measure other quark asymmetries if possible, as these would help clarify the source of any new physics behind A_{FB}^t. In this note it is argued that asymmetries in b\bar b and c\bar c should be accessible to the Tevatron experiments, using the full data sets. A crude study suggests that muon asymmetries in high-p_T dijet events, with suit…
We reevaluate the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the muon magnetic anomaly and to the running of the electromagnetic coupling constant at the $Z$-boson mass. We include newest $e^+e^- \to$ hadrons cross-section data together with a phenomenological fit of the threshold region in the evaluation of the dispersion integrals. The precision in the individual datasets cannot be fully exploited due to discrepancies that lead to additional systematic uncertainty in particular between BABAR and KLOE data in the dominant $π^+π^-$ channel. For the muon $(g-2)/2$, we find for the lowest-ord…
We study the hadronic production of $B_s$ and $B_s^*$ mesons within the fixed-flavor-number scheme, in which the dominant gluon-gluon fusion mechanism is dealt with by using the complete $α_s^4$ approach. Main theoretical uncertainties for $B_s$ and $B_s^*$ production at TEVATRON and LHC are presented. It is found that when $m_s$ increases by steps of 0.1 GeV, the integrated cross section of $B^{(*)}_s$ decreases by $80%-100%$, when $m_b$ increases by steps of 0.1 GeV, it changes to be $\sim 10%$. While the uncertainties caused by the parton distribution function and the factorization scale va…
In supersymmetric models, Winos, partners of the SU(2) gauge bosons, may be the lightest supersymmetric particles (LSPs). For generic parameters, charged and neutral Winos are highly degenerate. Charged Winos travel macroscopic distances, but can decay to neutral Winos and extremely soft leptons or pions before reaching the muon chambers, thereby circumventing conventional trigger requirements based on energetic decay products or muon chamber hits. However, these charginos are detectable, and can be triggered on when produced in association with jets. In addition, we propose a new trigger for …
We propose a new experiment to measure the running of the fine-structure constant in the space-like region by scattering high-energy muons on atomic electrons of a low-Z target through the process $μe \to μe$. The differential cross section of this process, measured as a function of the squared momentum transfer $t=q^2<0$, provides direct sensitivity to the leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon anomaly $a^{\rm{HLO}}_μ$. By using a muon beam of 150 GeV, with an average rate of $\sim1.3\times 10^7$ muon/s, currently available at the CERN North Area, a statistical uncertainty of $\sim 0…
The MUonE experiment aims at a precision measurement of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g-2$, via elastic muon-electron scattering. Since the current muon $g-2$ anomaly hints at the potential existence of new physics (NP) related to the muon, the question then arises as to whether the measurement of hadronic vacuum polarization in MUonE could be affected by the same NP as well. In this work, we address this question by investigating a variety of NP explanations of the muon $g-2$ anomaly via either vector or scalar mediators with either flavor-universal, non-universal…
We revisit the isospin-breaking and electromagnetic corrections to the decay $τ^-\toπ^-π^0ν_τ$, which allow its use as input in the two-pion contribution to the (leading order) hadronic vacuum polarization part of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We extend a previous resonance chiral Lagrangian analysis, which included those operators saturating the next-to-leading order chiral low energy constants, by including the contributions of the next subleading terms. As a result, we improve agreement between the two-pion tau decay and $e^+e^-$ data and reduce the discrepancy between experiment and …
We discuss the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. They are dominated by light quark contributions which are constrained by the mechanism of chiral symmetry breaking. Using the leading order result based on $e^+ e^-$ scattering data, we show that the next-to-leading order contributions in the fine structure constant $α$ can be reliably calculated. Extending this idea to the hadronic four-point function we give a prediction for the light-by-light contribution.
Some short-distance properties of the fourth-rank hadronic vacuum polarization tensor are re-examined.Their consequences are critically discussed in the context of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.
Following updates in the compilation of $e^+e^-\rightarrow{\rm hadrons}$ data, this work presents re-evaluations of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron ($a_e$), muon ($a_μ$) and tau lepton ($a_τ$), to the ground-state hyperfine splitting of muonium and also updates the hadronic contributions to the running of the QED coupling at the mass scale of the $Z$ boson, $α(M_Z^2)$. Combining the results for the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions with recent updates for the hadronic light-by-light corrections, the electromagnetic and th…
Recently, it was shown that insertions of hadronic vacuum polarization at O(alpha^4) generate non-negligible effects in the calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. This result raises the question if other hadronic diagrams at this order might become relevant for the next round of g-2 measurements as well. In this note we show that a potentially enhanced such contribution, hadronic light-by-light scattering in combination with electron vacuum polarization, is already sufficiently suppressed.
The contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from hadronic vacuum polarization and from hadronic light-by-light scattering are reexamined within the frame work of chiral perturbation theory; the $1/N_c$-expansion; and the extended Nambu Jona-Lasinio model of low-energy QCD.
The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment can be estimated by computing constituent quark loops. Such an estimate is very sensitive to the numerical values of the constituent quark masses. These can be fixed by computing the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly within the same model. In this Letter, we demonstrate the stability of this framework against first-order perturbative QCD corrections.
A model for verifying a consistency of the next-to-leading order hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment with those of the leading order is proposed. A part of the next-to-leading order hadronic contributions related to the vacuum polarization is rather accurately reproduced in the model. I find a new numerical value for the light-by-light hadronic contribution that leads to agreement with recent experimental result for the muon anomalous magnetic moment.
The MUonE proposal at the CERN SPS consists in extracting the value of the hadronic vacuum polarization self-energy function (HVP) from its contribution to the differential cross-section of elastic muon-electron scattering. The HVP contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment can then be obtained from a weighted integral of the measured HVP self-energy function. This, however, requires a knowledge of the HVP function in its full integration domain. This paper discusses a procedure to reconstruct the HVP function in the regions not directly accessible to measurement. The method is based o…
We computed the hadronic vacuum-polarization contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ(hadr.)$ by using the QCD model with infinite number of vector mesons [1,2]. The result is $a_μ(hadr.) = 663(23) \times 10^{-10}$. }
We reevaluate the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the muon magnetic anomaly and to the running of the electromagnetic coupling constant at the Z-boson mass. We include newest e+e- to hadrons cross-section data (among others) from the BABAR and VEPP-2000 experiments. For the muon (g-2)/2 we find for the lowest-order hadronic contribution (693.1 +- 3.4) 10^-10, improving the precision of our previous evaluation by 21%. The full Standard Model prediction differs by 3.5 sigma from the experimental value. The five-quark hadronic contribution to alpha(mZ) is evaluated to be (276.0 +- 0…
The current status of the muon anomalous magnetic moment problem is briefly presented. The corrections to muon anomaly coming from the effects of hadronic vacuum polarization, Z*γγ* effective vertex and light-by-light scattering are estimated within the instanton model of QCD vacuum.
We quantify the rate and the signal-to-background ratio for Higgs $\to b\bar{b}$ detection in double-diffractive events at the Tevatron and the LHC. The signal is predicted to be very small at the Tevatron, but observable at the LHC. We exemplify the diagnostic power of hadronic antenna pattern by considering the topology of hadronic flow corresponding to Higgs $\to b\bar{b}$ events.
{}From the study of the multiple muon events in deep underground detectors, it is possible to extract information about the spectrum and composition of the primary cosmic rays. In this work the number of TeV muons produced by a primary cosmic ray of a given energy and zenith angle is computed using analytic and montecarlo methods, for a family of simplified models as description of the properties of hadronic interactions. The effects of the uncertainties in our knowledge of the hadronic cross sections in the calculation of TeV muons are discussed.
We report on our progress toward the computation of the $π^0$, $η$ and $η^{\prime}$ transition form factors using staggered quarks on $N_f=2+1+1$ gauge ensembles generated by the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration. These form factors are essential ingredients to evaluate the pseudoscalar-pole contributions to the hadronic light-by-light scattering in the muon $g-2$. Preliminary results for the pseudoscalar-pole contributions are presented, at finite lattice spacing, for all three light mesons.
We discuss the recent progress made in using bottom-up holographic QCD models in calculating hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, in particular the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution, where holographic QCD naturally satisfies the Melnikov-Vainshtein constraint by an infinite series of axial vector meson contributions.
In this talk I review the recent progress on the numerical evaluation of the Hadronic Light-by-Light contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and I discuss the role of experimental data on the accuracy of its determination.
We consider the impact of O(alpha^2) hadronic corrections to the energy spectrum of the decay electron in muon decay. We find that the correction can be described, within good approximation, by a linear function in the electron energy. Explicit expressions for the form factors needed in an approach based on dispersion integrals are given.
Higher-order hadronic corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon have been evaluated including next-to-next-to-leading-order insertions of hadronic vacuum polarization and next-to-leading-order corrections to hadronic light-by-light scattering. This leaves a set of mixed leptonic and hadronic corrections in the form of double-bubble topologies as the only remaining hadronic effect at ${\mathcal O}(α^4)$. Here, we estimate these contributions by analyzing the respective cuts of the diagrams, suggesting that the impact is limited to $\lesssim 1\times 10^{-11}$ and thus negligible a…
I report on the theory, recent calculations and present status of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to muon g-2. In particular, I report on work done together with Eduardo de Rafael and Arkady Vainshtein where we get a^{HLbL} = (10.5 +- 2.6) x 10^{-10} as our present result for this quantity.
Dominant spin-flip effects for the direct and prompt $J/ψ$ polarizations at TEVATRON run II with collision energy 1.96 TeV and rapidity cut $|y^{J/ψ}|<0.6$, have been systematically studied, especially, the spin-flip effect for the transition of $(c\bar{c})_8[^3S_1]$ into $J/ψ$ has been carefully discussed. It is found that the spin-flip effect shall always dilute the $J/ψ$ polarization, and with a suitable choice of the parameters $a_{0,1}$ and $c_{0,1,2}$, the $J/ψ$ polarization puzzle can be solved to a certain degree. At large transverse momentum $p_t$, $α$ for the prompt $J/ψ$ is reduced …
The hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is parametrized by using the quark-resonance model formulated in \cite{QR}. In this context a recent prediction obtained within the ENJL model \cite{RAF} can be affected by two additional contributions: the next to leading corrections in the inverse cutoff expansion and the gluonic corrections. Motivated by the necessity of reaching a highly accurate theoretical prediction of the hadronic contribution to the muon g-2, we study in detail both the effects.
I present the main results obtained in a recent work together with Eduardo de Rafael and Arkady Vainshtein on the hadronic light-by-light contribution to muon g-2. We came to the estimate a^{HLbL}_μ= (10.5 +- 2.6) x 10^{-10}. Here, some emphasis is put in pointing out where the future KLOE2 two-photon experimental program can help to reduce the present model dependence of a^{HLbL}_μ.
We review the current status of theoretical calculations of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Different approaches and related issues such as OPE constraints and large breaking of chiral symmetry are discussed. Combining results of different models with educated guesses on the errors we come to the estimate $$a^{\rm HLbL}=(10.5\pm 2.6)\times 10^{-10}.$$ The text is prepared as a contribution to the {\it Glasgow White Paper on the present status of the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment}.
We consider an impact of hadronic light-by-light scattering on the muonium hyperfine structure. A shift of the hyperfine interval $Δν({\rm Mu}) _{\rm\tiny HLBL}$ is calculated with the light-by-light scattering approximated by exchange of pseudoscalar and pseudovector mesons. Constraints from the operator product expansion in QCD are used to fix parameters of the model similar to the one used earlier for the hadronic light-by-light scattering in calculations of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The pseudovector exchange is dominant in the resulting shift, $Δν({\rm Mu})_{\rm\tiny HLBL}= -0.00…
The pseudoscalar pole contribution is the dominant source of the $ {\cal O}(α^3) $ hadronic light-by-light scattering effect in muon $g - 2$. We have examined this contribution taking account of the off-shell structure of the pseudoscalar-photon-photon anomaly vertex deduced from available experimental data. Our work leads to an improved estimate, $ -79.2 (15.4) \times 10^{-11}$, for the total hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon $g - 2$.
We consider the O(alpha^2) hadronic corrections to the energy spectrum of the decay electron in muon decay. We find that the correction can be described, within good approximation, by a linear function in the electron energy. Explicit expressions for the form factors needed in an approach based on dispersion integrals are given.
We review the status of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment and critically compare recent calculations. We also study in detail which momentum regions the pi^0 exchange main contribution originates. We also argue that a_μ^{light-by-light} = (11 \pm 4) \times 10^{-10} encompasses the present understanding of this contribution and comment on some directions to improve on that.
Hadronic corrections to the muon lifetime are calculated in the Fermi theory in the presence of QED using dispersion relations. The result, after convolution of hadron data with the calculated perturbative kernel is Delta Gamma_had = -Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2(0.042) where Gamma_0 is the tree-level width. The results are also used to obtain the corrections to the muon lifetime coming from virtual muon and tau loops Delta Gamma_muon = Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2[(16987/576)-(85/36)zeta(2)-(64/3)zeta(3)] = -Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2(0.0364333) Delta Gamma_tau = -Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2)(0.00058)
We propose a simple parameterization of the two-point correlator of hadronic electromagnetic currents for the evaluation of the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The parameterization is explicitly done in the Euclidean domain. The model function contains a phenomenological parameter which provides an infrared cutoff to guarantee the smooth behavior of the correlator at the origin in accordance with experimental data in e+ e- annihilation. After fixing a numerical value for this parameter from the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic mom…
The dominant theoretical uncertainties in both, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the value of the electromagnetic coupling at the Z scale arise from their hadronic contributions. Since these will ultimately dominate the experimental errors, we study the correlation between them, as well as with other fundamental parameters. To this end we present analytical formulas for the QCD contribution from higher energies and from heavy quarks. Including these correlations affects the Higgs boson mass extracted from precision data.
We briefly review the current status of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Based on various model calculations in the literature, we obtain the estimate a_{mu}^{HLbL} = (102 \pm 39) x 10^{-11}. Recent developments including more model-independent approaches using dispersion relations and lattice QCD, that could lead to a more reliable estimate, are also discussed.
We present a Lorentz-covariant, Euclidean coordinate-space expression for the hadronic vacuum polarisation, the Adler function and the leading hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The representation offers a lot of flexibility for an implementation in lattice QCD. We expect it to be particularly helpful for the quark-line disconnected contributions.
