I report on the theory, recent calculations and present status of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to muon g-2. In particular, I report on work done together with Eduardo de Rafael and Arkady Vainshtein where we get a^{HLbL} = (10.5 +- 2.6) x 10^{-10} as our present result for this quantity.
Contributions of hadronic effects to the muonium physics and anomalous magnetic moment of muon are considered. Special attention is paid to higher-order effects and the uncertainty related to the hadronic contribution to the hyperfine structure interval in the ground state of muonium.
We discuss hadronic effects in the muonium hyperfine structure and derive an expression for the hadronic contribution to the hfs interval in form of the one-dimensional integral of the cross section of e+e- annihilation into hadrons. Higher-order hadronic contributions are also considered.
Some short-distance properties of the fourth-rank hadronic vacuum polarization tensor are re-examined.Their consequences are critically discussed in the context of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.
The contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from hadronic vacuum polarization and from hadronic light-by-light scattering are reexamined within the frame work of chiral perturbation theory; the $1/N_c$-expansion; and the extended Nambu Jona-Lasinio model of low-energy QCD.
The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment can be estimated by computing constituent quark loops. Such an estimate is very sensitive to the numerical values of the constituent quark masses. These can be fixed by computing the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly within the same model. In this Letter, we demonstrate the stability of this framework against first-order perturbative QCD corrections.
The contribution of hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) to the hyperfine splitting of the muonium ground state is evaluated with the account of modern experimental data on the cross section of $e^+e^- \to$ annihilation into hadrons.
A model for verifying a consistency of the next-to-leading order hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment with those of the leading order is proposed. A part of the next-to-leading order hadronic contributions related to the vacuum polarization is rather accurately reproduced in the model. I find a new numerical value for the light-by-light hadronic contribution that leads to agreement with recent experimental result for the muon anomalous magnetic moment.
The contribution of hadronic vacuum polarization to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen is evaluated with the account of modern experimental data on the cross section of $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadrons. The numerical value of this contribution to the (2P-2S) shift in muonic hydrogen is equal to 10.77 $μeV$.
We computed the hadronic vacuum-polarization contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ(hadr.)$ by using the QCD model with infinite number of vector mesons [1,2]. The result is $a_μ(hadr.) = 663(23) \times 10^{-10}$. }
We reevaluate the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the muon magnetic anomaly and to the running of the electromagnetic coupling constant at the Z-boson mass. We include newest e+e- to hadrons cross-section data (among others) from the BABAR and VEPP-2000 experiments. For the muon (g-2)/2 we find for the lowest-order hadronic contribution (693.1 +- 3.4) 10^-10, improving the precision of our previous evaluation by 21%. The full Standard Model prediction differs by 3.5 sigma from the experimental value. The five-quark hadronic contribution to alpha(mZ) is evaluated to be (276.0 +- 0…
The current status of the muon anomalous magnetic moment problem is briefly presented. The corrections to muon anomaly coming from the effects of hadronic vacuum polarization, Z*γγ* effective vertex and light-by-light scattering are estimated within the instanton model of QCD vacuum.
The contribution of hadronic vacuum polarization to the hyperfine splitting of the muonic hydrogen ground state is calculated with the account of experimental data on the cross section of e^+e^-\to annihilation into hadrons and the dipole parameterization of electromagnetic proton form factors.
{}From the study of the multiple muon events in deep underground detectors, it is possible to extract information about the spectrum and composition of the primary cosmic rays. In this work the number of TeV muons produced by a primary cosmic ray of a given energy and zenith angle is computed using analytic and montecarlo methods, for a family of simplified models as description of the properties of hadronic interactions. The effects of the uncertainties in our knowledge of the hadronic cross sections in the calculation of TeV muons are discussed.
We discuss the recent progress made in using bottom-up holographic QCD models in calculating hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, in particular the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution, where holographic QCD naturally satisfies the Melnikov-Vainshtein constraint by an infinite series of axial vector meson contributions.
In this talk I review the recent progress on the numerical evaluation of the Hadronic Light-by-Light contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and I discuss the role of experimental data on the accuracy of its determination.
We consider the impact of O(alpha^2) hadronic corrections to the energy spectrum of the decay electron in muon decay. We find that the correction can be described, within good approximation, by a linear function in the electron energy. Explicit expressions for the form factors needed in an approach based on dispersion integrals are given.
The hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is parametrized by using the quark-resonance model formulated in \cite{QR}. In this context a recent prediction obtained within the ENJL model \cite{RAF} can be affected by two additional contributions: the next to leading corrections in the inverse cutoff expansion and the gluonic corrections. Motivated by the necessity of reaching a highly accurate theoretical prediction of the hadronic contribution to the muon g-2, we study in detail both the effects.
I present the main results obtained in a recent work together with Eduardo de Rafael and Arkady Vainshtein on the hadronic light-by-light contribution to muon g-2. We came to the estimate a^{HLbL}_μ= (10.5 +- 2.6) x 10^{-10}. Here, some emphasis is put in pointing out where the future KLOE2 two-photon experimental program can help to reduce the present model dependence of a^{HLbL}_μ.
We review the current status of theoretical calculations of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Different approaches and related issues such as OPE constraints and large breaking of chiral symmetry are discussed. Combining results of different models with educated guesses on the errors we come to the estimate $$a^{\rm HLbL}=(10.5\pm 2.6)\times 10^{-10}.$$ The text is prepared as a contribution to the {\it Glasgow White Paper on the present status of the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment}.
We consider an impact of hadronic light-by-light scattering on the muonium hyperfine structure. A shift of the hyperfine interval $Δν({\rm Mu}) _{\rm\tiny HLBL}$ is calculated with the light-by-light scattering approximated by exchange of pseudoscalar and pseudovector mesons. Constraints from the operator product expansion in QCD are used to fix parameters of the model similar to the one used earlier for the hadronic light-by-light scattering in calculations of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The pseudovector exchange is dominant in the resulting shift, $Δν({\rm Mu})_{\rm\tiny HLBL}= -0.00…
The pseudoscalar pole contribution is the dominant source of the $ {\cal O}(α^3) $ hadronic light-by-light scattering effect in muon $g - 2$. We have examined this contribution taking account of the off-shell structure of the pseudoscalar-photon-photon anomaly vertex deduced from available experimental data. Our work leads to an improved estimate, $ -79.2 (15.4) \times 10^{-11}$, for the total hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon $g - 2$.
We consider the O(alpha^2) hadronic corrections to the energy spectrum of the decay electron in muon decay. We find that the correction can be described, within good approximation, by a linear function in the electron energy. Explicit expressions for the form factors needed in an approach based on dispersion integrals are given.
We review the status of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment and critically compare recent calculations. We also study in detail which momentum regions the pi^0 exchange main contribution originates. We also argue that a_μ^{light-by-light} = (11 \pm 4) \times 10^{-10} encompasses the present understanding of this contribution and comment on some directions to improve on that.
Hadronic corrections to the muon lifetime are calculated in the Fermi theory in the presence of QED using dispersion relations. The result, after convolution of hadron data with the calculated perturbative kernel is Delta Gamma_had = -Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2(0.042) where Gamma_0 is the tree-level width. The results are also used to obtain the corrections to the muon lifetime coming from virtual muon and tau loops Delta Gamma_muon = Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2[(16987/576)-(85/36)zeta(2)-(64/3)zeta(3)] = -Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2(0.0364333) Delta Gamma_tau = -Gamma_0(alpha/pi)^2)(0.00058)
We propose a simple parameterization of the two-point correlator of hadronic electromagnetic currents for the evaluation of the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The parameterization is explicitly done in the Euclidean domain. The model function contains a phenomenological parameter which provides an infrared cutoff to guarantee the smooth behavior of the correlator at the origin in accordance with experimental data in e+ e- annihilation. After fixing a numerical value for this parameter from the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic mom…
The dominant theoretical uncertainties in both, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the value of the electromagnetic coupling at the Z scale arise from their hadronic contributions. Since these will ultimately dominate the experimental errors, we study the correlation between them, as well as with other fundamental parameters. To this end we present analytical formulas for the QCD contribution from higher energies and from heavy quarks. Including these correlations affects the Higgs boson mass extracted from precision data.
We briefly review the current status of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Based on various model calculations in the literature, we obtain the estimate a_{mu}^{HLbL} = (102 \pm 39) x 10^{-11}. Recent developments including more model-independent approaches using dispersion relations and lattice QCD, that could lead to a more reliable estimate, are also discussed.
We derive an analytic result for the pion pole contribution to the light-by-light scattering correction to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ= (g_μ-2)/2$. Using the vector meson dominance model (VMD) for the pion transition form factor, we obtain $a_μ^{{\rm LBL},π^0} = +56 \times 10^{-11}$.
The hadronic vacuum-polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_{mu}(hadr) and to the value of the eleectromagnetic coupling constant at q^2 = M^2_z are determined more precisely in connection with a new more exact value of the electronic width of rho-meson. The QCD model with infinite number of vector mesons is used. The more precisely determined results are: a_{mu}(hadr) = 678(7)*10^{-10}, δα_{hadr}(M^2_z) = 0.02786(6).
We investigate restrictions on the hadronic contribution to the muon $(g-2)$ factor and to the pion electromagnetic formfactor from the analytical properties of the pion formfactor and the experimental data of the pion formfactor in the space-like [1] region. The values of the pion formfactor of [1] have been improved (see Table 1) and the values of the pion formfactor have been calculated at 20 additional points (see Table 2).
We calculate the hadronic light-by-light contributions to the muon $g-2$. We use both $1/N_c$ and chiral counting to organize the calculation. Then we calculate the leading and next-to-leading order in the $1/N_c$ expansion low energy contributions using the Extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model as hadronic model. We do that to all orders in the external momenta and quark masses expansion. Although the hadronic light-by-light contributions to muon $g-2$ are not saturated by these low energy contributions we estimate them conservatively. A detailed analysis of the different hadronic light-by-light…
Using the momentum dependence of the dressed quark mass and the well-known formulae for the mass dependent quark-loop contribution to the light-by-light scattering insertions, we compute the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The relevant momentum running in the quark loop is calculated from the $π^0$ exchange contribution to the light- by-light scattering. Special emphasis on the reconstruction of the pseudoscalar transition form factor is made, and the $π^0$ contribution to the hadronic light-by-light is, as well, updated.
We briefly review the current status of the hadronic light-by-light scattering correction to the muon g-2. Then we present our semi-analytical evaluation of the pion-pole contribution, using a description of the pion-photon-photon form factor based on large-N_C and short-distance properties of QCD. We also sketch an effective field theory approach to hadronic light-by-light scattering. In view of several still unsolved problems, our conservative estimate for the full hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution is a_{mu}(LbyL;had) = + 8 (4) x 10^{-10}.
We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment originating from the photon vacuum polarization. The corresponding three-loop kernel functions are calculated using asymptotic expansion techniques which lead to analytic expressions. Our final result, $a_μ^{\rm had,NNLO} = 1.24 \pm 0.01 \times 10^{-10}$, has the same order of magnitude as the current uncertainty of the leading order hadronic contribution and should thus be included in future analyses.
The contribution of pseudoscalar pole diagrams to the hadronic light-by-light corrections of order alpha^3 E_F to the ground state hyperfine splitting in hydrogenic atom is calculated in the pseudoscalar pole terms approximation. The vector dominance model for the form factor of the transition of a pseudoscalar meson into two photons is used. With the account of new experimental data on the cross sections sigma (e^+e^-\to ρ, ω\to π^0(η)γ) in the SND and CMD-2 experiments some other hadronic corrections to the muonium hyperfine splitting are calculated.
The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to muon $g-2$ is examined using low energy effective theories of QCD, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and hidden local chiral symmetry, as guides. Our result is $- 36 \times 10^{-11}$ with an uncertainty of $\pm 16 \times 10^{-11}$, which includes our best estimate of model dependence. This is within the expected measurement uncertainty of $40\times 10^{-11}$ in the forthcoming experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Our result removes one of the main theoretical obstacles in verifying the existence of the weak contribution to the muon $g-…
We consider the subleading contributions of the hadronic vacuum polarization, involving the $π^0γ^*γ^*$ transition form factor, to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$. Various models for the form factor, based on hadronic ansatzes and holographic principles, are considered: They are the Wess-Zumino-Witten, vector meson dominance, lowest meson dominance (one and two vector resonances) models, and AdS/QCD. The model parameters are determined by fitting the experimental data for the $e^+ e^- \rightarrow π^0 γ$ total cross section. We report numerical results of the corrections to the muon $g…
We give an update on the status of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon g-2. We review recent work by various groups, list some of the open problems and give an outlook on how to better control the uncertainty of this contribution. This is necessary in order to fully profit from planned future muon g-2 experiments to test the Standard Model. Despite some recent developments, we think that the estimate a_{mu}^{HLbL} = (116 \pm 40) x 10^{-11} still gives a fair description of the current situation.
I review the recent calculations and current status of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to muon g-2. In particular, I discuss the main results obtained in a recent work together with Eduardo de Rafael and Arkady Vainshtein where we came to the estimate a^{\rm HLbL}_μ= (10.5 +- 2.6) x 10^{-10}. How the two-photon physics program of low energy facilities can help to reduce the present model dependence is also emphasized.
The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to muon $g-2$ is examined based on the low energy effective theories of QCD, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and hidden local symmetry approach, supplemented by a general information concerning the asymptotic behavior of QCD. Our result is $- 52 \times 10^{-11}$ with an uncertainty of $\pm 18 \times 10^{-11}$, which includes our best estimate of model dependence. This is within the expected measurement uncertainty of $40\times 10^{-11}$ in the forthcoming experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Our result removes one of the main theoretica…
This talk discusses two analytical calculations relevant for the Standard Model calculation of the muon $g-2$. The first part is the recent derivation of the quark-loop as the first term in a well-defined operator-product expansion for the short-distance part of the hadronic light-by-light contribution, as well as the calculation of the next term. The second part is the calculation of finite volume effects relevant for lattice QCD calculations of the electromagnetic contribution to the lowest-order hadronic vacuum-polarization contribution and the proof they only start at $1/L^3$.
The behavior of the vector Adler function at spacelike momenta is studied in the framework of a covariant chiral quark model with instanton-like quark-quark interaction. This function describes the transition between the high energy asymptotically free region of almost massless current quarks to the low energy hadronized regime with massive constituent quarks. The model reproduces the Adler function and V-A correlator extracted from the ALEPH and OPAL data on hadronic τlepton decays, transformed into the Euclidean domain via dispersion relations. The leading order contribution from hadronic pa…
This talk is about the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, mainly our old work but including some newer results as well. It concentrates on the model calculations. Most attention is paid to pseudo-scalar exchange and the pion loop contribution. Scalar, $a_1$-exchange and other contributions are shortly discussed as well. For the $π^0$-exchange a possible large cancellation between connected and disconnected diagrams is expected.
We discuss hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_μ^{\rm lbl}, paying particular attention to the consistent matching between the short- and the long-distance behavior of the light-by-light scattering amplitude. We argue that the short-distance QCD imposes strong constraints on this amplitude overlooked in previous analyses. We find that accounting for these constraints leads to approximately 50 per cent increase in the central value of a_μ^{\rm lbl}, compared to existing estimates. The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution becomes a_μ…
We discuss, how planned measurements at KLOE-2 of the (pi^0 -> gamma gamma) decay width and the (gamma^* gamma -> pi^0) transition form factor can improve estimates for the numerically dominant pion-exchange contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the muon g-2 and what are the limitations related to the modelling of the off-shellness of the pion.
Results on the lowest-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly are presented. They are based on the latest published experimental data used as input to the dispersion integral. Thus recent results on tau to nutau pi pi0 decays from Belle and on e+ e- annihilation to pi+ pi- from BABAR and KLOE are included. The new data, together with improved isospin-breaking corrections for tau decays, result into a much better consistency among the different results. A discrepancy between the Standard Model prediction and the direct g-2 measurement is found at the level o…
In this talk recent progress in studying the short-distance properties of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the muon $g-2$ is described. The intermediate and short-distance part is a major contributor to the error of the theoretical prediction as described in the recent white paper [1]. We have shown that the massless quark-loop is the first term in a systematic expansion at short-distances, a result already used in the white paper. Newer results conclude that both nonperturbative and perturbative corrections are under control. The talk describes these developments and how they fit i…
The behavior of the $V^0$-$π^+$ scattering amplitude (where $V^0 = ρ^0 , ω$ , or $ϕ$) in the low pion momentum limit is studied motivated by its relevance to the theory of muon $g - 2$. Current algebra analysis shows that its S-wave component must vanish in the chiral limit under general physical assumptions. We confirm this result with various low energy models of vector meson. Our result justifies the calculation of the charged pion loop part of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to muon $ g-2 $ within the framework of hidden local symmetry model of low energy hadron dynamic…
We discuss the relation between remnant fragmentation in inelastic high-energy hadronic interactions and muon production in extensive cosmic ray air showers. Using a newly developed tool, a simple and flexible hadronic event generator, we analyze the forward region of hadronic interactions. We show that measurements of the Feynman-x distribution in the beam fragmentation region at LHCf will be key to understanding muon production in air showers quantitatively.
The evaluation of the numerically dominant pseudoscalar-pole contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the muon g-2 involves the pseudoscalar-photon transition form factor F_{P gamma^* gamma^*}(-Q_1^2, -Q_2^2) with P = pi^0, eta, eta^\prime and, in general, two off-shell photons with spacelike momenta Q_{1,2}^2. We determine which regions of photon momenta give the main contribution for hadronic light-by-light scattering. Furthermore, we analyze how the precision of future measurements of the single- and double-virtual form factor impacts the precision of a data-driven estimate of …
The hadronic corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, due to the full gauge-invariant set of diagrams with dynamical quark loop and intermediate pseudoscalar and scalar states light-by-light scattering insertions, are calculated in the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark model. These diagrams correspond to all hadronic light-by-light scattering contributions to $a_μ$ in the leading order of the $1/N_{c}$ expansion in quark model. The result for the quark loop contribution is $a_μ^{\mathrm{HLbL,Loop}}=\left( 11.0\pm0.9\right) \cdot10^{-10}$, and the total result is $a_μ^{\mathrm{HL…
We discuss the use of dispersion relations for the evaluation of the pseudoscalar contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We point out that, in the absence of experimental data, reconstruction of light-by-light scattering amplitudes from their absorptive parts is ambiguous and requires additional theoretical input. The need for an additional input makes dispersive computations of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to g-2 akin to phenomenological models, in spite of pretense to the contrary. In particular, we argue that the recent proposal [1], based on the dispers…
With the recent interest in the measured and standard model values of the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a_mu, some confusion has arisen concerning our knowledge of the hadronic contribution to a_mu. In the dispersion integral approach to hadronic vacuum polarization effects, low energy contributions must be evaluated from data or in a model-dependent approach tested by data. At higher energies perturbative QCD has been used, sometimes in conjunction with data. The history of such evaluations is reviewed, and the prospects for further improvement are discussed. We conclude that not all publis…
In this work, we present our recent results on a new and alternative data-driven determination for the hadronic light-by-light pseudoscalar-pole contribution to the muon $(g-2)$. Our approach is based on Canterbury approximants, a rational approach to describe the required transition form factors, which provides a systematic and model-independent framework beyond traditional large-$N_c$ approaches. As a result, we obtain a competitive determination with errors according to future $(g-2)$ experiments including, for the first time, a well-defined systematic uncertainty.
The largest error in the theoretical determination of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is due to the low-energy hadronic vacuum polarization, which cannot be calculated by perturbative QCD and requires nonperturbative techniques. Recently, an accurate determination of the low-energy two-pion contribution to muon $g-2$ has been obtained by a parametrization-free analytic continuation of the pion vector form factor from other kinematical regions. In this work we compare the results of the analytic continuation with direct determinations at low momenta from experiment and lattice QCD. We also e…
This addendum provides results complementary to those obtained in [J. Phys. G49, 055001 (2022)]. Specifically, an equivalent form of the relation, which binds together the "spacelike" kernel functions for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a^{\text{HVP}}_μ$, is obtained. It is shown that the infrared limiting value of the "spacelike" and "timelike" kernel functions, which enter the representations for $a^{\text{HVP}}_μ$ involving the Adler function and the $R$-ratio, is identical to the corresponding QED contribution to the muon anomalous magne…
We present the status of the MUonE experimental proposal which aims at determining the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon g-2 by measuring the hadronic part of the photon vacuum polarization in the spacelike region. The challenges posed by this measurement on the detector, the proposed solution, and the status of this proposal will be discussed.
