Recently, a new set of positivity bounds with $t$ derivatives have been discovered. We explore the generic features of these generalized positivity bounds with loop amplitudes and apply these bounds to constrain the parameters in chiral perturbation theory up to the next-to-next-to-leading order. We show that the generalized positivity bounds give rise to stronger constraints on the $\bar l_i$ constants, compared to the existing axiomatic bounds. The parameter space of the $b_i$ constants is constrained by the generalized positivity bounds to be a convex region that is enclosed for many sections of the total space. We also show that the improved version of these positivity bounds can further enhance the constraints on the parameters. The often used Padé unitarization method however does not improve the analyticity of the amplitudes in the chiral perturbation theory at low energies.
We test the positivity property of the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) pion-pion scattering amplitudes within the Mandelstam triangle. In the one-loop approximation, ${\cal O}(p^4)$, the positivity constrains only the coefficients $b_3$ and $b_4$, namely one obtains that $b_4$ and the linear combination $b_3+3 b_4$ are positive quantities. The two-loops approximation gives inequalities involving all the six arbitrary parameters entering ChPT amplitude, but the corrections to the one-loop approximation results are small. ChPT amplitudes pass unexpectedly well all the positivity tests giving s…
We derive a positivity bound on the right-chiral tensor coupling Im $g_R$ in polarized top quark decay by analyzing the angular decay distribution of the three-body polarized top quark decay $t(\uparrow)\to b+\ell^+ +ν_\ell$ in NLO QCD. We obtain the bound $-0.0420 \le$ Im $g_R \le 0.0420$.
We present positivity bounds, derived from the principles of analyticity, unitarity and crossing symmetry, that constrain the low-energy constants of chiral perturbation theory. Bounds are produced for 2, 3 or more flavours in meson-meson scattering with equal meson masses, up to and including next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), using the second and higher derivatives of the amplitude. We enhance the bounds by using the most general isospin combinations posible (or higher-flavour counterparts thereof) and by analytically integrating the low-energy range of the discontinuities. In addition, w…
Requiring the existence of a unitary, causal and local UV-completion places a set of positivity bounds on the corresponding effective field theories (EFTs). We discuss the obstructions and possibility in applying the positivity bound to cosmology, in particular the EFT of cosmological perturbations. Taking a $c_T=1$ beyond-Horndeski EFT as an illustrative example, we derive such bounds, which incorporate the cosmological correction of order $H^2/Λ^2$, $Λ$ being the cutoff scale. The derived bounds are applied to slow-roll inflation with beyond Horndeski operators. It is found that the cosmolog…
Positivity constraints on the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude are derived in this article with the help of general S-matrix arguments, such as analyticity, crossing symmetry and unitarity, in the upper part of Mandelstam triangle, R. Scanning inside the region R, the most stringent bounds on the chiral low energy constants of the pion-nucleon Lagrangian are determined. When just considering the central values of the fit results from covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory using extended-on-mass-shell scheme, it is found that these bounds are well respected numerically both at O(p^3) and …
The $ε$-regime of dilaton chiral perturbation theory is introduced. We compute the dilaton mass, the chiral condensate and the topological susceptibility in the $ε$-regime, as a function of the fermion mass. The microscopic spectral density of the Dirac operator is obtained from dilaton chiral perturbation theory. Our main result is that the chiral condensate and the spectral density are related to their counterparts from ordinary chiral perturbation theory via a simple scaling relation. This relation originates from the mass dependence of the dilaton potential, and is valid in both the $ε$-re…
We construct the Chiral Perturbation Theory operators for neutron-antineutron oscillations and use these to estimate chiral and finite volume corrections at one-loop order.
Three topics about the application of quenched chiral perturbation theory to matter fields are studied. It is proved that the hairpin axial current couplings in quenched chiral perturbation theories do not contribute to the quenched chiral singularities for one chiral loop renormalization of matter field properties. The modification of mass corrections in the chiral limit due to nonzero mass splittings are studied, and selection rules for hadron decays in quenched QCD are obtained.
Chiral perturbation theory is the effective field theory of the Standard Model at low energies. After a short introduction and overview, I discuss three topics where the chiral approach leads to a deeper understanding of low-energy hadron physics: radiative kaon decays, carbogenesis in stellar nucleosynthesis and the interplay of chiral perturbation theory and lattice QCD.
We complete the analysis of twist-two generalized parton distributions of the nucleon in one-loop order of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Extending our previous study of the chiral-even isosinglet sector, we give results for chiral-even isotriplet distributions and for the chiral-odd sector. We also calculate the one-loop corrections for the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions of the pion.
We discuss the question in the title employing manifestly covariant Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and recent high-statistics lattice results published in [1].
Recently, the chiral logarithms predicted by quenched chiral perturbation theory have been extracted from lattice calculations of hadron masses. We argue that the deviations of lattice results from random matrix theory starting around the so-called Thouless energy can be understood in terms of chiral perturbation theory as well. Comparison of lattice data with chiral perturbation theory formulae allows us to compute the pion decay constant. We present results from a calculation for quenched SU(2) with Kogut-Susskind fermions at β=2.0 and 2.2.
We present a calculation of generalized baryon form factors in the framework of three-flavor covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at leading one-loop order. This is needed for lattice calculations of the first moments of generalized parton distribution functions. The formulae we derive can be used to guide the chiral extrapolation of such lattice results.
Heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is extended to include the effects of quenching. In this framework the leading nonanalytic dependence of the heavy baryon masses on the light quark masses is studied. The size of quenching effects is estimated by comparing the results of quenched and ordinary chiral perturbation theories. It is found that in general they can be large. This estimate is relevant to lattice simulations of the heavy baryon masses.
We discuss the potential of Ginsparg-Wilson fermion simulations in the epsilon-regime of chiral perturbation theory, regarding the determination of the leading low energy constants of the effective chiral Lagrangian. It turns out to be very hard to measure observables in the topologically trivial sector. There a huge statistics would be required, due to the frequent occurrence of very small eigenvalues. Moreover, contact with chiral perturbation theory is only established if the physical volume of the system is sufficiently large.
We present positivity bounds, derived from the principles of analyticity, unitarity and crossing symmetry, that constrain the low-energy constants of chiral perturbation theory. We enhance the bounds by using the most general isospin combinations posible (or higher-flavour counterparts thereof) and by analytically integrating the low-energy range of the amplitude. These lectures describe the use of effective field theories to extrapolate results from the parameter region where numerical simulations of lattice QCD are possible to the physical parameters (physical quark masses, infinite volume, vanishing lattice spacing, etc.). After a brief introduction and overview, I discuss three topics: 1) Chiral perturbation theory in the continuum; 2) The inclusion of discretization effects into chiral perturbation theory, focusing on the application to Wilson and twisted-mass lattice fermions; 3) Extending chiral perturbation theory to describe partially quenched …
I compare the lattice calculation of Fukugita et al. for the pion S-wave scattering lengths to the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory to two loop accuracy. I find good agreement, despite the use of the quenched approximation in the lattice calculation.
We present our recent lattice calculation with dynamical quarks using the overlap fermion formulation, which has exact chiral symmetry. It is possible to compare our data of meson mass and decay constant with the prediction from the chiral perturbation theory. From such comparison, we investigate the convergence property of the chiral expansion. For $N_f=2$, we observe that the prediction to NLO does not converge at the scale of kaon mass. Based on this fact, we extend the analysis to the $N_f=2+1$ case and carry out the extrapolation to the physical mass point using the NNLO formulae.
The quenched approximation for QCD is, at present and in the foreseeable future, unavoidable in lattice calculations with realistic choices of the lattice spacing, volume and quark masses. In these lectures, I review the analytic study of the effects of quenching based on chiral perturbation theory. Quenched chiral perturbation theory leads to quantitative insight into the difference between quenched and unquenched QCD, and reveals clearly diseases which plague quenched QCD. A short review of the ideas underlying chiral perturbation theory is included.
Explicit expressions for pion correlators are derived in position-space, employing Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). Resonance exchange contributions are included to test the range of applicability of the leading-order ChPT expressions. The obtained results will be useful for a forthcoming Lattice-QCD study of double parton distributions in the pion.
We formulate quenched chiral perturbation theory for heavy-light mesons coupled to pions, and calculate the one-loop chiral logarithmic corrections to $f_B$, $f_{B_{s}}$, $B_B$ and $B_{B_{s}}$. We also calculate these corrections for ``partially quenched'' theories. In both theories, the chiral logarithms diverge in the chiral limit, indicating that (partially) quenched theories should not be used to study this limit. Comparing the chiral logarithms to those in QCD, we estimate the errors caused by (partial) quenching. By forming suitable ratios, we can reduce the uncertainties in our estimate…
We analyze the moments of the isosinglet generalized parton distributions H, E, H-tilde, E-tilde of the nucleon in one-loop order of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. We discuss in detail the construction of the operators in the effective theory that are required to obtain all corrections to a given order in the chiral power counting. The results will serve to improve the extrapolation of lattice results to the chiral limit.
The divergences of the generating functional of quenched Chiral Perturbation theory (qCHPT) to one loop are computed in closed form. We show how the quenched chiral logarithms can be reabsorbed in the renormalization of the $B_0$ parameter of the leading order Lagrangian. Finally, we do the chiral power counting for the quenched case and show that also finite loop corrections may diverge in the chiral limit.
We calculate the finite volume corrections to meson masses and decay constants in two and three flavour Chiral Perturbation Theory to two-loop order. The analytical results are compared with the existing result for the pion mass in two-flavour ChPT and the partial results for the other quantities. We present numerical results for all quantities.
Positivity bounds are powerful tools to constrain effective field theories. Utilizing the partial wave expansion in the dispersion relation and the full crossing symmetry of the scattering amplitude, we derive several sets of generically nonlinear positivity bounds for a generic scalar effective field theory: We refer to these as the $PQ$, $D^{\rm su}$, $D^{\rm stu}$ and $\bar{D}^{\rm stu}$ bounds. While the $PQ$ bounds and $D^{\rm su}$ bounds only make use of the $s\leftrightarrow u$ dispersion relation, the $D^{\rm stu}$ and $\bar{D}^{\rm stu}$ bounds are obtained by further imposing the $s\…
In this paper we present chiral extrapolation formulas for the generalized form factors connected to the first moments of chiral-even generalized parton distributions. For the description of QCD at low energies we employ the framework of two-flavor covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at full one-loop accuracy. Our results are well suited for the extrapolation of lattice QCD data to physical quark masses.
I present a selection of recent lattice data by major collaborations for the pseudo-Goldstone boson masses in full ($N_f=2$) QCD, where the valence quarks are chosen exactly degenerate with the sea quarks. At least the more chiral points should be consistent with Chiral Perturbation Theory for the latter to be useful in extrapolating to physical masses. Perspectives to reliably determine NLO Gasser-Leutwyler coefficients are discussed.
Lattice regularization is used to perform chiral perturbation theory calculations in finite volume. The lattice spacing is chosen small enough to be irrelevant, and numerical results are obtained from simple summations.
Chiral perturbation theory can be defined and regularized on a spacetime lattice. A few motivations are discussed here, and an explicit lattice Lagrangian is reviewed. A particular aspect of the connection between lattice chiral perturbation theory and lattice QCD is explored through a study of the Wess-Zumino-Witten term.
We explore some of the constraints imposed by positivity of the QCD measure (Weingarten's inequalities) on the parameters defining chiral perturbation theory. We find, in particular, that $2 m_q (μ)\leq B_0(μ) Z(μ)$. The use of further properties of the exact fermion propagator yields information on some higher order parameters.
We provide an introduction to the basic concepts of chiral perturbation theory and discuss some recent developments in the manifestly Lorentz-invariant formulation of the one-nucleon sector.
Properties of the proton and the neutron are explored in partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory with two non-degenerate light flavors. Masses, magnetic moments, matrix elements of isovector twist-2 operators and axial-vector currents are computed at the one-loop level in the chiral expansion.
Heavy quark effective theory can be used to calculate the values of the semileptonic B^(*) -> D^(*) decays in the limit that the heavy quark masses are infinite. We calculate the lowest order chiral corrections, which are of O(1/M^2), from the breaking of heavy quark symmetry at the zero recoil point in quenched chiral perturbation theory. These results will aid in the extrapolation of quenched lattice calculations from the light quark masses used on the lattice down to the physical ones.
The masses of the spin-3/2 baryons are calculated to next-to-next-to-leading order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and partially quenched heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The calculation is performed for three light flavors in the isospin limit. These results are necessary for extrapolating QCD and partially quenched QCD lattice calculations of the decuplet baryon masses.
We give a brief introduction to chiral perturbation theory in its various settings. We discuss some applications of recent interest including chiral extrapolations for lattice gauge theory.
The mass spectrum of the lowest lying octet baryons is calculated to next-to-next-to-leading order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and partially quenched heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We work in the isospin limit and treat the decuplet baryons as dynamical fields. These results are necessary for extrapolating QCD and partially quenched QCD lattice simulations of the octet baryon masses.
We provide an introduction to the power-counting issue in baryon chiral perturbation theory and discuss some recent developments in the manifestly Lorentz-invariant formulation of the one-nucleon sector. As explicit applications we consider the chiral expansion of the nucleon mass, its convergence properties, and calculations of the electromagnetic and axial form factors of the nucleon.
We present a model independent study of the chiral condensate evolution in a hadronic gas, in terms of temperature and baryon chemical potential. The meson-meson interactions are described within Chiral Perturbation Theory and the pion-nucleon interaction by means of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, both at one loop, and nucleon-nucleon interactions can be safely neglected within our hadronic gas domain of validity. Together with the virial expansion, this provides a systematic expansion at low temperatures and chemical potentials, which includes the physical quark masses. This can ser…
We compute the magnetic moments of the octet baryons up to two orders in quenched chiral perturbation theory. In addition to the $\sim\sqrt{m_q}$ contributions that arise in QCD, there are lower-order contributions of the form $M_0^2\log m_q$ from loop diagrams involving hairpin interactions.
Both scalar and vector light resonances can be generated from the unitarization of one-loop chiral perturbation theory. This amounts to using in a dispersion relation the chiral expansion, which incorporates the correct QCD quark mass dependence. We can thus predict the quark mass dependence of the poles associated to those light resonances. Our results compare well with some recent lattice results for the rho(770) mass and can be used as a benchmark for future lattice results on the rho(770) or the f0(600) also known as the sigma.
These are the proceedings of the workshop on ``Lattice QCD, Chiral Perturbation Theory and Hadron Phenomenology'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas from October 2 to 6, 2006. The workshop concentrated on bringing together researchers working in lattice QCD and chiral perturbation theory with the aim of improving our understanding how hadron properties can be calculated and analyzed from first principles. Included are a short contribution per talk.
We extend chiral perturbation theory to include linear dependence on the lattice spacing $a$ for the Wilson action. The perturbation theory is written as a double expansion in the small quark mass $m_q$ and lattice spacing $a$. We present formulae for the mass and decay constant of a flavor-non-singlet meson in this scheme to order $a$ and $m_q^2$. The extension to the partially quenched theory is also described.
We derive the axion-nucleon interaction Lagrangian in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order. The effective axion-nucleon coupling is calculated to a few percent accuracy.
It is shown that the chiral nonanalytic terms generated by $Δ_{33}$ resonance in the nucleon self-energy is reproduced in chiral perturbation theory by perturbing appropriate local operators contained in the pion-nucleon effective Lagrangian itself.
Spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD has traditionally been inferred indirectly through low-energy theorems and comparison with experiments. Thanks to the understanding of an unexpected connection between chiral Random Matrix Theory and chiral Perturbation Theory, the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD can now be shown unequivocally from first principles and lattice simulations. In these lectures I give an introduction to the subject, starting with an elementary discussion of spontaneous breaking of global symmetries.
We evaluate the branching ratios for the decays $K\rightarrow πππeν$ at leading order in chiral perturbation theory and give an isospin relation for the decay rates.
The basic ideas and some recent developments of the chiral perturbation theory approach to hadron dynamics at low-energies are reviewed. (Invited talk at the HADRON'93 Conference Como, Italy June 1993.)
I give a summary of recent results on nucleon polarizabilities, with emphasis on chiral perturbation theory. The predictive calculations of Compton scattering off the nucleon are compared to recent empirical determinations and lattice QCD calculations of the polarizabilities, thereby testing chiral perturbation theory in the single-baryon sector.
Calculations of eta->pi^0 pi^0 gamma gamma decay in generalized chiral perturbation theory are presented. Tree level and some of next-to-leading corrections are involved. Sensitivity to the deviations from the standard chiral perturbation theory is discussed.
We study the temperature evolution of the quark-antiquark condensate below the chiral phase transition. The hadronic gas is described using a virial expansion within Generalized Chiral Perturbation Theory. In such way, we can implement both the large or small chiral condensate scenarios and analyze the condensate dependence on the values of the lightest quark masses.
The basic ideas and power counting rules of chiral perturbation theory are discussed. The formalism of velocity dependent fields for baryons, and for hadrons containing a heavy quark, is explained. (Invited Talk, 1993 QCD Rencontres de Moriond)
This talk is an overview of Chiral Perturbation Theory for Kaon physics as far as not covered by other speakers. It includes a short introduction to the strengths and weaknesses of Chiral Perturbation Theory and its applications to semileptonic Kaon decays and $K\toππ(π)$.
