Positivity constraints on the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude are derived in this article with the help of general S-matrix arguments, such as analyticity, crossing symmetry and unitarity, in the upper part of Mandelstam triangle, R. Scanning inside the region R, the most stringent bounds on the chiral low energy constants of the pion-nucleon Lagrangian are determined. When just considering the central values of the fit results from covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory using extended-on-mass-shell scheme, it is found that these bounds are well respected numerically both at O(p^3) and O(p^4) level. Nevertheless, when taking the errors into account, only the O(p^4) bounds are obeyed in the full error interval, while the bounds on O(p^3) fits are slightly violated. If one disregards loop contributions, the bounds always fail in certain regions of R. Thus, at a given chiral order these terms are not numerically negligible and one needs to consider all possible contributions, i.e., both tree-level and loop diagrams. We have provided the constraints for special points in R where the bounds are nearly optimal in terms of just a few chiral couplings, which can be easily implemented and employed to constrain future analyses. Some issues about calculations with an explicit Delta(1232) resonance are also discussed.
We test the positivity property of the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) pion-pion scattering amplitudes within the Mandelstam triangle. In the one-loop approximation, ${\cal O}(p^4)$, the positivity constrains only the coefficients $b_3$ and $b_4$, namely one obtains that $b_4$ and the linear combination $b_3+3 b_4$ are positive quantities. The two-loops approximation gives inequalities involving all the six arbitrary parameters entering ChPT amplitude, but the corrections to the one-loop approximation results are small. ChPT amplitudes pass unexpectedly well all the positivity tests giving s…
The distribution of longitudinal gluons in a nucleon, introduced earlier by Gorsky and Ioffe, is estimated from below by making use of the positivity of density matrix and the analogue of the Wandzura-Wilczek relation for the light-cone distributions of polarized gluons in a transversely polarized nucleon.
The spin structure of nucleon at twist 2 and 3 levels is analyzed. The contribution of quark and gluon spins to nucleon spin are Lorentz invariant, while it is not sure for orbital angular momentum. The conserved fractional moments of transversity distribution are considered. The scenario of decoupled total angular momentum, determined predominantly by the unpolarized scattering, is discussed.
The positivity bound for the transverse asymmetry $A_2$ may be improved by making use of the fact, that the state of a photon and a nucleon with total spin 3/2, does not participate to the interference. The bound is therefore useful in the case of a longitudinal asymmetry small (say, at low $x$) or negative (like in the neuteron case).
Elastic pion-pion and pion-nucleon scattering are reviewed in the context of chiral perturbation theory. Theoretical results from systematic low-energy expansions to O(p^6) for pion-pion and to O(p^3) for pion-nucleon scattering are compared with experimental data. Possible future developments are outlined.
Gribov's theory of confinement offers a simple explanaton of the value of the pion nucleon sigma term. There is no need to invoke a large strange quark component in the nucleon.
We provide a precise calculation for the contribution of hard near threshold pion electro production to all nucleon structure functions. This framework will allow us to split the required nucleon to pion nucleon transition probability matrix element into an exact threshold part parametrized by nucleon to pion nucleon transition form factors plus soft pion structures. These transition form factors will be related to nucleon form factors by taking into account symmetric and antisymmetric contributions of the needed leading twist nucleon distribution amplitude. Whereas the relations generated by …
It was shown by careful consideration of the time--dependent classic solution for the rotated skyrmion, that such solution at large distances has radiational component similar to the Lienart-Viehart retarded potential in Electrodynamics. We consider such solution as stationary phase configuration of the pion field in path integrals for the correlators of $n$ isovector axial currents $J_μ^{A,i}$ and two nucleon currents $J_N$. $n$ pion -- nucleon amplitudes are extracted from these correlators. The careful account of the asymptotics of this stationary phase configuration of the pion field (rota…
This is a short presentation of the results for the pion-nucleon distribution amplitudes which are expressed in terms of the nucleon distribution amplitudes with the help of current algebra. Everything is considered to be at threshold.
The number of pions in the nucleon is a theoretical concept and its value is model dependent. It is, however, a useful tool to understand the pionic contribution to several nucleon observables such as electric charge radii, magnetic moments, axial charge, pion-nucleon coupling constant, amplitudes for electroexcitation of baryon resonances and electroproduction of pions above such resonances.
A new result for the pion nucleon Sigma term from a George Washington University/TRIUMF group analysis of pion nucleon data is presented. The value Sigma=79$\pm$7 MeV was obtained, compared to the canonical value 64$\pm$8 MeV found by Koch. The difference is explained simply by the PSI pionic hydrogen value for a(pi -p), the latest results for the $πNN$ coupling onstant, and a narrower Delta resonance. Many systematic effects have been investigated, including Coulomb corrections, and database changes, and our results are found to be robust. In the standard interpretation, our value of Sigma im…
Using the vacuum-to-pion matrix element of the correlation function of the interpolating fields of the two nucleons, the isospin splitting in the diagonal pion-nucleon coupling constant has been studied in the framework of the conventional QCD sum rule. Some of the implications of this splitting has also been discussed.
A dispersion framework, appropriate for discussing the low-energy pion-nucleon interaction, is reviewed. Sensitivity of the isoscalar D-amplitude at the unphysical Cheng-Dashen point to input from different phase shift analyses and low-energy experiments is discussed.
The pion-deuteron scattering length is computed to next-to-next-to-leading order in baryon chiral perturbation theory. A modified power-counting is then formulated which properly accounts for infrared enhancements engendered by the large size of the deuteron, as compared to the pion Compton wavelength. We use the precise experimental value of the real part of the pion-deuteron scattering length determined from the decay of pionic deuterium, together with constraints on pion-nucleon scattering lengths from the decay of pionic hydrogen, to extract the isovector and isoscalar S-wave pion-nucleon …
We present a study of inclusive direct-photon and neutral pion production in hadronic interactions that focuses on a comparison of the ratio of photon and pion yields with expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD).
We develop a generalized version of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to describe pion-nucleon scattering in a kinematic domain that extends continuously from threshold to the delta-isobar peak. The $P$-wave phase shifts are used to illustrate this framework.
The pion nucleon sigma-term is extracted on the basis of the soliton picture of the nucleon from the mass spectrum of usual and the recently observed exotic baryons, assuming that they have positive parity. The value found is consistent with that inferred by means of conventional methods from pion nucleon scattering data. The study can also be considered as a phenomenological consistency check of the soliton picture of baryons.
We consider the two-flavor version of the extended linear sigma model (eLSM), which contains (pseudo)scalar and (axial-)vector quark-antiquark mesons, a scalar glueball (predominantly corresponding to $f_{0}(1710)$), as well as the nucleon and its chiral partner. We extend this model by the additional light scalar meson $f_{0}(500)$, predominantly a putative four-quark state. We investigate various interaction terms of the four-quark and glueball states with the other particles, some of which preserve and some of which explicitly break the $U(1)_{\textrm{A}}$ symmetry. We test our model by per…
We study the very recently discovered $Θ^+$ (1540) at SPring-8, at ITEP and at CLAS-Thomas Jefferson Lab. We apply the same RGM techniques that already explained with success the repulsive hard core of nucleon-nucleon, kaon-nucleon exotic scattering, and the attractive hard core present in pion-nucleon and pion-pion non-exotic scattering. We find that the K-N repulsion excludes the Theta+ as a K-N s-wave pentaquark. We explore the Theta+ as heptaquark, equivalent to a N+pi+K borromean boundstate, with positive parity and total isospin I=0. We find that the kaon-nucleon repulsion is cancelled b…

We propose an intensity-dependent pion-nucleon coupling Hamiltonian within a unitary multiparticle-production model of the AABS type in which the pion field is represented by the thermal-density matrix. Using this Hamiltonian, we explain the appearance of the negative- binomial (NB) distribution for pions and the well-known empirical relation, the so-called Wroblewski relation. The Hamiltonian of our model is expressed linearly in terms of the generators of the SU(1,1) group.
A dependence of the value of the pion-nucleon sigma term on higher partial waves is discussed. Two recent predictions of a high value of sigma term are scrutinezed. It has been concluded that the main reason for obtaining high values of the sigma term are input D waves that are not consistent with analyticity.
We calculate the phase shifts in the pion-nucleon scattering using the heavy baryon formalism. We consider phase shifts for the pion energy range of 140 to $200 $ MeV. We employ two different methods for calculating the phase shifts - the first using the full third order calculation of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude and the second by including the resonances $Δ$ and $N^*$ as explicit degrees of freedom in the Lagrangian. We compare the results of the two methods with phase shifts extracted from fits to the pion-nucleon scattering data. We find good to fair agreement between the calculat…
We study off-shell effects of the pion cloud on the sea quark distribution in the nucleon. The structure function of the off-mass-shell pion is obtained within the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model, where the shape of the distribution function depends on the pion momentum. By using the momentum dependent pion structure function, the SU(2) flavor asymmetry in the nucleon see is reexamined within the pionic model, in which the sea quark distribution of the nucleon is given as a convolution of the off-shell pion structure function. We calculate experimentally observed quantities related to the SU(2) a…
The pion cloud renormalises the light-cone wavefunction of the nucleon which is measured in hard, exclusive photon-nucleon reactions. We discuss the leading twist contributions to high-energy exclusive reactions taking into account both the pion cloud and perturbative QCD physics. The nucleon's electromagnetic form-factor at high $Q^2$ is proportional to the bare nucleon probability $Z$ and the cross-sections for hard (real at large angle or deeply virtual) Compton scattering are proportional to $Z^2$. Our present knowledge of the pion-nucleon system is consistent with $Z = 0.7 \pm 0.2$. If we…
A model independent expression for the electromagnetic corrections to a phenomenological hadronic pion-nucleon scattering length, extracted from pionic hydrogen, is obtained. In a non-relativistic approach and using an extended charge distribution, these corrections are derived up to terms of order (alpha)**2 log(alpha) in the limit of a short-range hadronic interaction. We infer a charged pion-proton scattering length of 0.0870(5) in units of inverse pion mass, which gives for the charged pion-proton-neutron coupling, through the GMO relation, a value of 14.04(17).
We investigate hard exclusive reactions on the nucleon with soft pion emission. A parametrization of corresponding hadronic matrix elements in terms of parton distributions for final pion-nucleon state is provided. These distributions are calculated in terms of nucleon and pion GPDs and the pion distribution amplitude via soft-pion theorems. Some observables for the process of hard charged pion production on the proton with soft pion emission are computed.
Nonminimal substitution terms in electroweak currents are studied in effective chiral soliton models. It is found that the terms describing the structure of the pion lead to sizable effects in form factors and polarizabilities of the nucleon.
We calculate the nucleonic and pionic dispersion relations at finite temperature T and non-vanishing chemical potentials $(μ_f)$ in the context of an effective chiral theory that describes the strong and electromagnetic interactions for nucleons and pions. The dispersion relations are calculated in the broken chiral symmetry phase, where the nucleons are massive and pions are taken as massless. The calculation is performed at lowest order in the energy expansion, working in the framework of the real time formalism of thermal field theory in the Feynman gauge. These one-loop dispersion relation…
We derive an analytic expression for the Kroll-Ruderman amplitude up to the order 1/N_C for general Skyrme-type models of the nucleon. Due to the degeneracy of intermediate N- and Delta-states we find deviations from the standard low-energy theorem for the photoproduction of neutral pions.
Attention is paid to recent results from the ZEUS Collaboration on the photo- and electro- production of leading neutrons in e^+ p collisions at HERA. Some implications for the structure of the pion and the nucleon are discussed.
We discuss an on-shell approach to pion-nucleon physics that is consistent order by order in a $1/f_π$ expansion with the chiral reduction formula, crossing, and relativistic unitarity. A number of constraints between the on-shell low-energy parameters are derived at tree level in the presence of the pion-nucleon sigma term, and found to be in fair agreement with experiment. We analyze the nucleon form factors, and the $πN\to πN$ scattering amplitude to one-loop, as well as $πN\toππN$ to tree level. We use the latter to derive a new constraint for the pion-nucleon sigma term at threshold. We c…
We investigate the dispersive contribution by radiative processes such as (pi- proton to neutron gamma) and (pi- proton to Delta gamma) to the pion-nucleon scattering lengths of charged pions in the heavy baryon limit. They give a large isospin violating contribution in the corresponding isoscalar scattering length, but only a small violation in the isovector one. These terms contribute 6.3(3)% to the 1s level shift of pionic hydrogen and give a chiral constant F_pi^2f_1=-25.8(8) MeV.
In a recent work on low energy pion-nucleon scattering, instead of using chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) amplitude, we started from a pion-nucleon {\it soft-pion} result and used elastic unitarity directly as a dynamical constraint to construct first-order unitarity corrected amplitudes. The resulting amplitudes are crossing symmetric but, as the ChPT ones, satisfy only approximate unitarity relation. In the present work, we reconsider our approach and we apply the inverse amplitude method (IAM) in order to access the energy resonance region. We present the resulting S- and P-wave phase shif…
This work represents an extension of the single pion production model proposed by D. Rein. The model consists of resonant pion production and nonresonant background contributions coming from three Born diagrams in the helicity basis. The new work includes lepton mass effects, and nonresonant interaction is described by five diagrams based on a nonlinear σ model. This work provides a full kinematic description of single pion production in the neutrino-nucleon interactions, including resonant and nonresonant interactions in the helicity basis, in order to study the interference effect.
The spin properties and the flavor asymmetric sea of the nucleon can be well explained by assuming that each constituent quark is surrounded with about 30% probability by a quark-antiquark pair coupled to the pion quantum numbers. We show that about one quarter of these quark-antiquark pairs show up as the pion in $\p\to\nπ^+$ and $\p\to\pπ^0$ fluctuation in agreement with the observed value in the ($\e+\p\to\e+$ forward neutron+X) experiment.
The $O(p^4)$ calculation on pion-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude in EOMS scheme within covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory is reviewed. Numerical fits to partial wave amplitudes up to $\sqrt{s}=1.13$ GeV and 1.20 GeV are performed and the results are compared with previous studies.
The nucleon form factors of the energy-momentum tensor are studied in the large-Nc limit in the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model for model parameters that simulate physical situations in which pions are heavy. This allows for a direct comparison to lattice QCD results.
We extend earlier investigations of charge symmetry violation in the valence quark distributions of the nucleon, and make similar estimates for the pion. The sensitivity of pion-induced Drell-Yan measurements to such effects is then examined. It is shown that combinations of $π^+$ and $π^-$ data on deuterium and hydrogen are sensitive to these violations, and that the pion and nucleon charge symmetry violating terms separate as a function of $x_π$ and $x_N$ respectively. We estimate the background terms which must be evaluated to extract charge symmetry violation.
In this paper we study the gluon distribution functions in nucleons and pions at a low resolution $Q^2$ scale. This is an important issue since parton densities at low $Q^2$ have always been taken as an external input which is adjusted through DGLAP evolution to fit the experimental data at higher scales. Here, in the framework of a model recently developed, it is shown that the hypothetical cloud of {\it neutral} pions surrounding nucleons and pions appears to be responsible for the characteristic valence-like gluon distributions needed at the inital low scale. As an additional result, we get…
We study the pion-nucleon sigma term in vacuum and in nuclear matter in the framework of global color model of QCD. With the effective gluon propagator being taken as the $δ$-function in momentum space of Munczek-Nomirovsky model, we estimate that the sigma term at chiral limit in the vacuum is 9/2 times the current quark mass and it decreases with the nuclear matter density. With the presently obtained in-medium pion-nucleon sigma term, we study the in-medium chiral quark condensate and obtain a reasonable variation behavior against the nuclear matter density.
The simple model describing charge independence and charge symmetry breaking of the pion-nucleon coupling constant is proposed. The model, which has simple physical meaning and foundation, suggests directly proportional dependence of the pion-nucleon coupling constants on the masses of interacting nucleons and pions. Charge dependence of the pion-nucleon coupling constant and the $^{1}S_{0}$-state low-energy nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) scattering parameters are studied on the basis of the Yukawa meson theory. The values of the $np$ and $nn$ interaction characteristics calculated by the proposed mod…
I discuss recent results regarding the influence of pion-nucleon and and nucleon-resonance physics on the (spin-) polarizabilities of the nucleon as measured in (polarized) Compton scattering.
We study relationship between the physical quantities that characterize pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon interaction on the basis of the fact that nuclear forces in the nucleon-nucleon system at low energies are mainly determined by the one-pion exchange mechanism. By making use of the recommended proton-proton low-energy scattering parameters, we obtain the following value for the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant g$_{π^{\pm }}^{2}/4π=14.55(13)$. Calculated value of this quantity is in excellent agreement with the experimental result g$_{π^{\pm }}^{2}/4π=14.52(26)$ of the Uppsala Neutron…
Taking into account PDFs obtained by various Collaborations, the momentum transfer dependence of GPDs of the pion are obtained. The calculated electromagnetic and gravitomagnetic form factors of the pions and nucleons are used for the description of the pion-nucleon elastic scattering in a wide energy and momentum transfer region with minimum fitting parameters.
A perturbative QCD treatment of the pion wave function is applied to computing the scattering amplitude for coherent high relative momentum di-jet production from a nucleon.
The isovector GMO sum rule for zero energy forward pion-nucleon scattering is critically studied to obtain the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant using the precise negatively charged pion-proton and pion-deuteron scattering lengths deduced recently from pionic atom experiments. This direct determination leads to a pseudoscalar charged pion-nucleon coupling constant of 14.23 +- 0.09 (statistic) +- 0.17 (systematic). We obtain also accurate values for the pion-nucleon scattering lengths.
At temperatures less than a few MeV, the efficiency of the neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung from nucleons interracting with the condensed pion field is much less than previously estimated by other authors. The physical reason for this is a periodic structure of the developed pion condensate. The repeated interactions of a nucleon with the periodic pion field modify the nucleon spectrum, which is split into two bands. The energy gap between the bands is about a few MeV or larger, even if the amplitude of the pion field is small compared with the pion mass.
The Nucleon-Nucleon interaction in the singlet ($^1 S_0$) and triplet ($^3 S_1$) channels have been studied in the framework of Relativistic Harmonic Model using the Resonating Group Method in Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The full Hamiltonian consists of the kinetic energy, two body confinement potential, confined one gluon exchange potential and one pion exchange potential. Contribution of Confined One Gluon Exchange Potential and One Pion Exchange Potential to the adiabatic nucleon-nucleon interaction potential is discussed.
This paper presents the fascinating correspondence between the geometric function theory and the scattering amplitudes with $O(N)$ global symmetry. A crucial ingredient to show such correspondence is a fully crossing symmetric dispersion relation in the $z$-variable, rather than the fixed channel dispersion relation. We have written down fully crossing symmetric dispersion relation for $O(N)$ model in $z$-variable for three independent combinations of isospin amplitudes. We have presented three independent sum rules or locality constraints for the $O(N)$ model arising from the fully crossing s…
The pion-nucleon and kaon-nucleon scattering lengths are studied in the QCD sum rule. We show that the leading and next-to-leading order terms of the OPE give rise to the Tomozawa-Weinberg and sigma terms, respectively. We also show that in the kaon-nucleon system the $Λ(1405)$ contribution has to be subtracted from the OPE side in order to obtain the scattering length. The odd components of the $T$-matrices are in agreement with the experimental values not only in the pion-nucleon channel but also in the kaon-nucleon channel after the $Λ(1405)$ contribution subtracted. The even components dis…
Making use of the quasi-coherent state developed by Eriksson et al., we can find a nucleon solution accompanied by the pion field with trivial topology. We compare our approach with other related works, and examine a coherent state description of pions in the baryon structure. Our solution suggests a kind of nucleon resonance due to the topological change of pion field without the usual quark excitation.
We discuss the implications of a new determination of the pion-nucleon sigma term for the evaluation of the neutralino-nucleon cross-section, and, in turn, for detection rates for relic neutralinos in WIMP direct experiments and in some of the indirect searches. It is shown that the new range for the pion-nucleon sigma term, taken at its face value, favours values of the neutralino-nucleon cross-sections which are sizeably larger than some of the current estimates. Implications for neutralino cosmological properties are derived.
A chiral invariant effective Lagrangian may be used to calculate the three-body interactions among low-energy pions and nucleons in terms of known parameters. This method is illustrated by the calculation of the pion-nucleus scattering length.
The renormalized pion-nucleon Lagrangian is calculated to O(p^3) in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. By suitably chosen transformations of the nucleon field, the Lagrangian is brought to a standard form.
The pion-nucleon sigma term is shown to be equal to the Goldberger-Treiman discrepancy at tree level. Its value estimated this way is very sensitive to the pion-nucleon coupling constant g_{pi NN}. This relation, when combined with the pion-nucleon S-wave scattering lengths, yields a new determination of g_{pi NN} at tree level. The results of a one-loop analysis are also summarized determining an allowed range for the induced pseudoscalar coupling constant g_P.
Next to leading order effective field theory calculations are performed for $ {}^1S_0$ NN scattering using subtractive renormalization procedure. One pion exchange and contact interaction potentials are iterated using Lippman-Schwinger equation. Satisfactory fit to the Nijmegen data is obtained for the momenta up to 300 MeV in the centre of mass frame. Phase shifts are also compared with the results of KSW approach where pions are included perturbatively.
