This paper is motivated by the study of Lyapunov functionals for four equations describing free surface flows in fluid dynamics: the Hele-Shaw and Mullins-Sekerka equations together with their lubrication approximations, the Boussinesq and thin-film equations. We identify new Lyapunov functionals, including some which decay in a convex manner (these are called strong Lyapunov functionals). For the Hele-Shaw equation and the Mullins-Sekerka equation, we prove that the $L^2$-norm of the free surface elevation and the area of the free surface are Lyapunov functionals, together with parallel results for the thin-film and Boussinesq equations. The proofs combine exact identities for the dissipation rates with functional inequalities. For the thin-film and Boussinesq equations, we introduce a Sobolev inequality of independent interest which revisits some known results and exhibits strong Lyapunov functionals. For the Hele-Shaw and Mullins-Sekerka equations, we introduce a functional which controls the $L^2$-norm of three-half spatial derivative. Under a mild smallness assumption on the initial data, we show that the latter quantity is also a Lyapunov functional for the Hele-Shaw equation, implying that the area functional is a strong Lyapunov functional. Precise lower bounds for the dissipation rates are established, showing that these Lyapunov functionals are in fact entropies. Other quantities are also studied such as Lebesgue norms or the Boltzmann's entropy.
In this work we present a Lyapunov inequality for linear and quasilinear elliptic differential operators in $N-$dimensional domains $Ω$. We also consider singular and degenerate elliptic problems with $A_p$ coefficients involving the $p-$Laplace operator with zero Dirichlet boundary condition. As an application of the inequalities obtained, we derive lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the $p-$Laplacian, and compare them with the usual ones in the literature.
This paper is devoted to the study of $L_{p}$ Lyapunov-type inequalities ($ \ 1 \leq p \leq +\infty$) for linear partial differential equations at radial higher eigenvalues. More precisely, we treat the case of Neumann boundary conditions on balls in $\real^{N}$. It is proved that the relation between the quantities $p$ and $N/2$ plays a crucial role to obtain nontrivial and optimal Lyapunov inequalities. By using appropriate minimizing sequences and a detailed analysis about the number and distribution of zeros of radial nontrivial solutions, we show significant qualitative differences accord…
In this paper we prove the fractional Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality on homogeneous Lie groups. Also, we establish weighted fractional Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality and Lyapunov-type inequality for the Riesz potential on homogeneous Lie groups. The obtained Lyapunov inequality for the Riesz potential is new already in the classical setting of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. As an application, we give two-sided estimate for the first eigenvalue of the Riesz potential. Also, we obtain Lyapunov inequality for the system of the fractional $p$-sub-Laplacian equations and give an application to estimate it…
Several different problems make the study of the so called Lyapunov type inequalities of great interest, both in pure and applied mathematics. Although the original historical motivation was the study of the stability properties of the Hill equation (which applies to many problems in physics and engineering), other questions that arise in systems at resonance, crystallography, isoperimetric problems, Rayleigh type quotients, etc. lead to the study of $L_p$ Lyapunov inequalities ($1\leq p\leq \infty$) for differential equations. In this work we review some recent results on these kinds of quest…
This paper is devoted to the study of $L_p$ Lyapunov-type inequalities for linear systems of equations with Neumann boundary conditions and for any constant $p \geq 1$. We consider ordinary and elliptic problems. The results obtained in the linear case are combined with Schauder fixed point theorem to provide new results about the existence and uniqueness of solutions for resonant nonlinear problems. The proof uses in a fundamental way the nontrivial relation between the best Lyapunov constants and the minimum value of some especial minimization problems.
In this paper we study the fractional Dirichlet p-sub-Laplacian in a Haar measurable set on homogeneous Lie groups. We prove fractional Sobolev and Hardy inequalities and we also present a Lyapunov-type inequality for the fractional p-sub-Laplacian. As a consequence of the Lyapunov-type inequality we show an estimate of the first eigenvalue in a quasi-ball for the Dirichlet fractional p-sub-Laplacian.
This paper is devoted to the study of Lyapunov-type inequality for Neumann boundary conditions at higher eigenvalues. Our main result is derived from a detailed analysis about the number and distribution of zeros of nontrivial solutions and their first derivatives, together with the use of suitable minimization problems. This method of proof allows to obtain new information on Lyapunov constants. For instance, we prove that as in the classical result by Lyapunov, the best constant is not attained. Additionally, we exploit the relation between Neumann boundary conditions and disfocality to prov…
This paper is devoted to provide some new results on Lyapunov type inequalities for the periodic boundary value problem at higher eigenvalues. Our main result is derived from a detailed analysis on the number and distribution of zeros of nontrivial solutions and their first derivatives, together with the study of some special minimization problems, where the Lagrange multiplier Theorem plays a fundamental role. This allows to obtain the optimal constants. Our applications include the Hill's equation where we give some new conditions on its stability properties and also the study of periodic an…
This article considers the eigenvalue problem for the Sturm-Liouville problem including $p$-Laplacian \begin{align*} \begin{cases} \left(\vert u'\vert^{p-2}u'\right)'+\left(λ+r(x)\right)\vert u\vert ^{p-2}u=0,\,\, x\in (0,π_{p}),\\ u(0)=u(π_{p})=0, \end{cases} \end{align*} where $1<p<\infty$, $π_{p}$ is the generalized $π$ given by $π_{p}=2π/\left(p\sin(π/p)\right)$, $r\in C[0,π_{p}]$ and $λ<p-1$. Sharp Lyapunov-type inequalities, which are necessary conditions for the existence of nontrivial solutions of the above problem are presented. Results are obtained through the analysis of variational…
In this article, we establish Lyapunov type inequality for the following extremal Pucci's equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned}{} \mathcal{M}^{+}_{λ,Λ}(D^{2}u)+a(x)u&=0~\text{in}~Ω,\\ u&=0~\text{on}~\partialΩ, \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\R^{N},~N\geq2$. This works generalize the well-known works on Lyapunov inequalities to fully nonlinear elliptic equations.
Nash and Sobolev inequalities are known to be equivalent to ultracontractive properties of heat-like Markov semigroups, hence to uniform on-diagonal bounds on their kernel densities. In non ultracontractive settings, such bounds can not hold, and (necessarily weaker, non uniform) bounds on the semigroups can be derived by means of weighted Nash (or super-Poincaré) inequalities. The purpose of this note is to show how to check these weighted Nash inequalities in concrete examples, in a very simple and general manner. We also deduce off-diagonal bounds for the Markov kernels of the semigroups, r…
This paper considers the stability problem of a linear time invariant system in feedback with a string equation. A new Lyapunov functional candidate is proposed based on the use of augmented states which enriches and encompasses the classical Lyapunov functional proposed in the literature. It results in tractable stability conditions expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities. This methodology follows from the application of the Bessel inequality together with Legendre polynomials. Numerical examples illustrate the potential of our approach through three scenari: a stable ODE perturbed b…
Time-dependent rescalings and Lyapunov functionals for the Vlasov-Poisson and Euler-Poisson systems, and for related models of kinetic equations, fluid dynamics and quantum physics
In this paper we deal with parabolic variational inequalities of Navier-Stokes type with time-dependent constraints on velocity fields, including gradient constraint case. One of the objectives of this paper is to propose a weak variational formulation for variational inequalities of Navier-Stokes type and to solve them by applying the compactness theorem, which was recently developed by the authors (cf. [22]). Another objective is to approach to a class of quasi-variational inequalities associated with Stefan/Navier-Stokes problems in which we are taking into account the freezing effect of ma…
Note that some classic fluid dynamical systems such as the Navier-Stokes equations, Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), Boussinesq equations, and etc are observably different from each other but obey some energy inequalities of the similar type. In this paper, we attempt to axiomatize the extending mechanism of solutions to these systems, merely starting from several basic axiomatized conditions such as the local existence, joint property of solutions and some energy inequalities. The results established have nothing to do with the concrete forms of the systems and, thus, give the extending mechanisms…
We apply the borderline Sobolev inequalities of Bourgain-Brezis to the vorticity equation and Navier-Stokes equation in 2D. We take the initial vorticity to be in the space of functions of Bounded variation(BV). We obtain the subsequent vorticity to be in the space of functions of bounded variation, uniformly for small time, and the velocity vector to be uniformly bounded for small time. Such a conclusion cannot follow for initial vorticity taken to be just a measure or in L^1 from the Lamb-Oseen vortex example. Secondly we apply an improved Strichartz inequality obtained earlier by the first …
This article is devoted to the study of the Hele-Shaw equation. We introduce an approach inspired by the water-wave theory. Starting from a reduction to the boundary, introducing the Dirichlet to Neumann operator and exploiting various cancellations, we exhibit parabolic evolution equations for the horizontal and vertical traces of the velocity on the free surface. This allows to quasi-linearize the equations in a very simple way. By combining these exact identities with convexity inequalities, we prove the existence of hidden Lyapunov functions of different natures. We also deduce from these …
In this paper, we consider an Euler-Bernoulli beam equation with time-varying internal fluid. We assume that the fluid is moving with non-constant velocity and dynamical boundary conditions are satisfied. We prove the existence and uniqueness of global solution under suitable assumptions on the tension of beam and on the parameters of the problem. Afterwards, we establish the exponential stability of the solution by introducing a suitable Lyapunov functional.
We study the behaviour of various Lyapunov functionals (relative entropies) along the solutions of a family of nonlinear drift-diffusion-reaction equations coming from statistical mechanics and population dynamics. These equations can be viewed as gradient flows over the space of Radon measures equipped with the Hellinger-Kantorovich distance. The driving functionals of the gradient flows are not assumed to be geodesically convex or semi-convex. We prove new isoperimetric-type functional inequalities, allowing us to control the relative entropies by their productions, which yields the exponent…
We obtain some important fundamental inequalities concerning the long time behavior of high order derivatives for solutions of some dissipative systems in terms of their $L^2$ algebraic decay. Some of these inequalities have not been observed in the literature even for the fundamental Navier-Stokes equations. To illustrate this new approach, we derive bounds for the asymmetric incompressible fluids equations, where an improved inequalities established for the micro-rotational field. Finally, we show how this technique can be applied for other dissipative systems.

In this work, we study the global existence of strong solutions and large-time behavior of a two-phase fluid model in a bounded domain. The model consists of the isothermal Euler equations and the isentropic compressible Navier--Stokes equations, coupled via the drag force. It was derived in [13[ from a kinetic-fluid model describing the dynamics of particles subject to local alignment force and Brownian noises immersed in a compressible viscous fluid. For this system, we extend the local existence theory for strong solutions developed in [13] to obtain the global existence of strong solutions…
We exhibit a large class of Lyapunov functionals for nonlinear drift-diffusion equations with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. These are generalizations of large deviation functionals for underlying stochastic many-particle systems, the zero range process and the Ginzburg-Landau dynamics, which we describe briefly. As an application, we prove linear inequalities between such an entropy-like functional and its entropy production functional for the boundary-driven porous medium equation in a bounded domain with positive Dirichlet conditions: this implies exponential rates of relaxa…
We consider the top Lyapunov exponent associated to a dissipative linear evolution equation posed on a separable Hilbert or Banach space. In many applications in partial differential equations, such equations are often posed on a scale of nonequivalent spaces mitigating, e.g., integrability ($L^p$) or differentiability ($W^{s, p}$). In contrast to finite dimensions, the Lyapunov exponent could apriori depend on the choice of norm used. In this paper we show that under quite general conditions, the Lyapunov exponent of a cocycle of compact linear operators is independent of the norm used. We ap…
We derive a saturated feedback control, which locally stabilizes a linear reaction-diffusion equation. In contrast to most other works on this topic, we do not assume the Lyapunov stability of the uncontrolled system and consider general unstable systems. Using Lyapunov methods, we provide estimates for the region of attraction for the closed-loop system, given in terms of linear and bilinear matrix inequalities. We show that our results can be used with distributed as well as scalar boundary control, and with different types of saturations. The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrate…
