The electronic properties of hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductor interfaces depend strongly on the alignment of the electronic carrier levels in the organic/inorganic components. In the present work, we address this energy level alignment from first principles theory for two paradigmatic organic-inorganic semiconductor interfaces, the singlet fission materials tetracene and pentacene on H/Si(111), using all-electron hybrid density functional theory. For isolated tetracene on H/Si(111), a type I-like heterojunction (lowest-energy electron and hole states on Si) is found. For isolated pentacene, the molecular and semiconductor valence band edges are degenerate. For monolayer films, we show how to construct supercell geometries with up to 1,192 atoms, which minimize the strain between the inorganic surface and an organic monolayer film. Based on these models, we predict the formation of type II heterojunctions (electron states on Si, hole-like states on the organic species) for both acenes, indicating that charge separation at the interface between the organic and inorganic components is favored. The paper discusses the steps needed to find appropriate low-energy interface geometries for weakly bonded organic molecules and films on inorganic substrates from first principles, a necessary prerequisite for any computational level alignment prediction.
The spin current relaxation time [tau] in thermally evaporated pentacene films was evaluated with the spin-pump-induced spin transport properties and the charge current transport properties in pentacene films. Under an assumption of a diffusive transport of the spin current in pentacene films, the zero-field mobility and the diffusion constant of holes in pentacene films were experimentally obtained to be ~8.0x10^-7 m^2/Vs and ~2.0x10^-8 m^2/s, respectively. Using those values and the previously obtained spin diffusion length in pentacene films of 42{plus-minus}10 nm, the [tau] in pentacene fi…
The fission of singlet excitons into triplet pairs in organic materials holds great technological promise, but the rational application of this phenomenon is hampered by a lack of understanding of its complex photophysics. Here, we use the controlled introduction of vacancies by means of spacer molecules in tetracene and pentacene thin films as a tuning parameter complementing experimental observables to identify the operating principles of different singlet fission pathways. Time-resolved spectroscopic measurements in combination with microscopic modelling enables us to demonstrate distinct s…
Here were report a study of picene nano-cristalline thin films doped with pentacene molecules. The thin films were grown by supersonic molecular beam deposition with a doping concentration that ranges between less than one molecules of pentacene every 104 picene molecules up to about one molecule of pentacene every 102 of picene. Morphology and opto-electronic properties of the films were studied as a function of the concentration of dopants. The optical response of the picene films, characterized by absorption, steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, changes dramaticall…
We report the spin-pump-induced spin transport properties of a pentacene film prepared by thermal evaporation. In a palladium(Pd)/pentacene/Ni80Fe20 tri-layer sample, a pure spin-current is generated in the pentacene layer by the spin-pumping of Ni80Fe20, which is independent of the conductance mismatch problem in spin injection. The spin current is absorbed into the Pd layer, converted into a charge current with the inverse spin-Hall effect in Pd, and detected as an electromotive force. This is clear evidence for the pure spin current at room temperature in pentacene films prepared by thermal…
The thermal deposition and transfer Printing method had been used to produce pentacene thin-films on SiO2/Si and plastic substrates (PMMA and PVP), respectively. X-ray diffraction patterns of pentacene thin films showed reflections associated with highly ordered polycrystalline films and a coexistence of two polymorph phases classified by their d-spacing, d(001): 14.4 and 15.4 A.The dependence of the c-axis correlation length and the phase fraction on the film thickness and printing temperature were measured. A transition from the 15.4 A phase towards 14.4 A phase was also observed with increa…
Pentacenequinone (PnQ) impurities have been introduced into a pentacene source material at number densities from 0.001 to 0.474 to quantify the relative effects of impurity content and grain boundary structure on transport in pentacene thin-film transistors. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electrical measurements of top-contact pentacene thin-film transistors have been employed to directly correlate initial structure and final film structures, with the device mobility as a function of added impurity content. The results reveal a factor four decrease in mobility without significant changes in…
We experimentally show that the rate of singlet fission in tetracene films has a superlinear dependence on the density of photo-excited singlet excitons with ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. The spectrotemporal features of singlet and triplet dynamics can be disentangled from experimental data with the algorithm of singular value decomposition. The correlation between their temporal dynamics indicates a nonlinear density dependence of fission rate, which leads to a conjecture of coherent singlet fission process arising from superradiant excitons in crystalline tetracene. This hypot…
Inorganic-organic interfaces are important for enhancing the power conversion efficiency of silicon-based solar cells through singlet exciton fission (SF). We elucidated the structure of the first monolayers of tetracene (Tc), a SF molecule, on hydrogen-passivated Si(111) [H-Si(111)] and hydrogenated amorphous Si (a-Si:H) by combining near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For samples grown at or below substrate temperatures of 265 K, the resulting ultrathin Tc films are domina…
Ultra-thin oxide (UTO) films were grown on Si(111) in ultrahigh vacuum at room temperature and characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy. The ultra-thin oxide films were then used as substrates for room temperature growth of pentacene. The apparent height of the first layer is 1.57 +/- 0.05 nm, indicating standing up pentacene grains in the thin-film phase were formed. Pentacene is molecularly resolved in the second and subsequent molecular layers. The measured in-plane unit cell for the pentacene (001) plane (ab plane) is a=0.76+/-0.01 nm, b=0.59+/-0.01 nm, and gamma=87.5+/-0.4 degrees. …
We present optical absorption spectra of mixed films of pentacene (PEN) and perfluoropentacene (PFP) grown on SiO2. We investigated the influence of intermolecular coupling between PEN and PFP on the optical spectra by analyzing samples with five different mixing ratios of PFP:PEN with variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE) and differential reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The data show how the spectral shape is influenced by changes in the volume ratio of the two components. By comparison with the pure film spectra an attempt is made to distinguish transitions due to intermolecular c…
Here we a present a density functional theory study of pentacene ultra-thin films on flat [(111)] and vicinal [(455)] Au surfaces. We have performed crystal and electronic structure calculations by using PBE and optB86b-vdW functionals and investigated the effects of long range Van der Waals interactions for different coverages starting from a single isolated molecule up to 4 monolayers of coverage. For an isolated molecule both functionals yield the hollow site as the most stable one with bridge-60 site being very close in energy in case of optB86b-vdW. Binding strength of an isolated pentace…
The band dispersion of the two highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-derived bands in thin crystalline Pentacene films grown on Bi(001) was determined by photoemission spectroscopy. Compared to first-principles calculations our data show a significantly smaller band width and a much larger band separation indicating that the molecular interactions are weaker than predicted by theory--a direct contradiction to previous reports by Kakuta et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 247601 (2007)]. The effective hole mass m* at M-bar is found to be anisotropic and larger than theoretically predicted. Compari…
Pentacene is known to grow on isotropic silicon oxide surfaces in a substrate-induced phase with fiber textured crystallites. This growth study reports on the growth of pentacene crystallites on uniaxially oriented surfaces. Silica substrates have been treated by ion beam sputtering so that ripples with a lateral corrugation length of 38 nm and a surface roughness of 1.3 nm are formed. Pentacene thin films with a nominal thickness in the range from 20 nm up to 300 nm are deposited on top of the rippled surfaces. The films are characterized by atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence X-ray…
We studied the influence of oxygen on the electronic trap states in a pentacene thin film. This was done by carrying out gated four-terminal measurements on thin-film transistors as a function of temperature and without ever exposing the samples to ambient air. Photooxidation of pentacene is shown to lead to a peak of trap states centered at 0.28 eV from the mobility edge, with trap densities of the order of 10(18) cm(-3). These trap states need to be occupied at first and cause a reduction in the number of free carriers, i.e. a consistent shift of the density of free holes as a function of ga…
Due to recent advances in scanning-probe technology, the electronic structure of individual molecules can now also be investigated if they are immobilized by adsorption on non-conductive substrates. As a consequence, different molecular charge-states are now experimentally accessible. Thus motivated, we investigate as an experimentally relevant example the electronic and structural properties of a NaCl(001) surface with and without pentacene adsorbed (neutral and charged) by employing density functional theory. We estimate the polaronic reorganization energy to be $E_\text{reorg} \simeq 0.8-1.…
We report on a healing of defects at room temperature in the organic semiconductor pentacene. This peculiar effect is a direct consequence of the weak intermolecular interaction which is characteristic of organic semiconductors. Pentacene thin-film transistors were fabricated and characterized by in situ gated four-terminal measurements. Under high vacuum conditions (base pressure of order 10E-8 mbar), the device performance is found to improve with time. The effective field-effect mobility increases by as much as a factor of two and mobilities up to 0.45 cm2/Vs were achieved. In addition, the…
Pentacenequinone (PnQ) impurities have been introduced into a pentacene source material in a controlled manner to quantify the relative effects of the impurity content on grain boundary structure and thin film nucleation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been employed to directly characterize films grown using 0.0-7.5% PnQ by weight in the source material. Analysis of the distribution of capture zones areas of submonolayer islands as a function of impurity content shows that for large PnQ content the critical nucleus size for forming a Pn island is smaller than for low PnQ content. This resul…
The influence of solubilizing substitutional groups on the electronic and optical properties of functionalized pentacene molecules and crystals have been investigated. Density functional theory is used to calculate the electronic and optical properties of pentacene, TIBS-CF$_{3}$-pentacene, and TIPS-pentacene. The results are compared with experimental absorption spectra of solutions and the complex dielectric function of thin films in the 1 eV to 3 eV energy range. In all cases, the band gaps of the isolated molecules are found to be smaller than those of the crystals. The absorption spectra …
A method for improving the efficiency of solar cells is combining a low-bandgap semiconductor with a singlet fission material (which converts one high energy singlet into two low energy triplets following photoexcitation). Here we present a study of the interface between singlet fission molecules and low-bandgap halide pervoskites. We briefly show a range of experiments screening for triplet transfer into a halide perovskite. However, in all cases triplet transfer was not observed. This motivated us to understand the halide perovskite/singlet fission interface better by carrying out first-prin…
The structural profiles and electronic properties of pentacene (C$_{22}$H$_{14}$) multilayers on Ag(111) surface has been studied within the density functional theory (DFT) framework. We have performed first-principle total energy calculations based on the projector augmented wave (PAW) method to investigate the initial growth patterns of pentacene (Pn) on Ag(111) surface. In its bulk phase, pentacene crystallizes with a triclinic symmetry while a thin film phase having an orthorhombic unit cell is energetically less favorable by 0.12 eV/cell. Pentacene prefers to stay planar on Ag(111) surfac…
We investigated structure and morphology of PTFE layers deposited by vacuum process in dependence on deposition parameters: deposition rate, deposition temperature, electron activation energy and activation current. Pentacene (PnC) layers deposited on top of those PTFE films are used as a tool to demonstrate the orienting ability of the PTFE layers. The molecular structure of the PTFE films was investigated by use of infrared spectroscopy. By means of ellipsometry, values of refractive index between 1.33 and 1.36 have been obtained for PTFE films in dependence on deposition conditions. Using t…
The electron-phonon(e-p) interaction in Pentacene (Pn) films grown on Bi(001) was investigated using photoemission spectroscopy. The spectra reveal thermal broadening from which we determine an e-p mass enhancement factor of lambda = 0.36 +/- 0.05 and an effective Einstein energy of omega_E = 11 +/- 4 meV. From omega_E it is inferred that dominant contributions to the e-p effects observed in ARPES come from intermolecular vibrations. Based on the experimental data for lambda we extract an effective Peierls coupling value of g_eff = 0.55. The e-p coupling narrows the HOMO band width by 15 +/- 8…
We report detailed temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra of pentacene (PEN), perfluoropentacene (PFP), and PEN:PFP mixed thin films grown on SiO2. PEN and PFP are particularly suitable for this study, since they are structurally compatible for good intermixing and form a model donor/acceptor system. The PL spectra of PEN are discussed in the context of existing literature and compared to the new findings for PFP. We analyze the optical transitions observed in the spectra of PEN and PFP using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Importantly, for the mix…
We measure the complex impedance between source/drain electrodes and the gate electrode of a pentacene thin-film transistor (TFT) at frequencies 50 Hz < omega/2pi < 20 kHz. Modeling the TFT as a distributed RC network (RC transmission line), we find that the data cannot be explained by a model including only a real, frequency-independent sheet conductivity. Instead, we use the RC transmission line model to extract the frequency-dependent complex sheet conductivity sigma(omega) = sigma'(omega) + jsigma"(omega) of the pentacene film. At high frequencies, sigma(omega) increases with frequency, si…
The optical properties of pentacene (PEN) and perfluoropentacene(PFP) thin films on various SiO2 substrates were studied using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry. Structural characterization was performed using X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. A uniaxial model with the optic axis normal to the sample surface was used to analyze the ellipsometry data. A Strong optical anisotropy was observed and enabled the direction of the transition dipole of the absorption bands to be determined. Furthermore, comparison of the optical constants of PEN and PFP thin films with the absorpt…
We use time-resolved momentum microscopy at a free-electron laser (FEL) and extend orbital tomography into the time domain to image the electronic wave functions of excited molecular orbitals. This technique provides unprecedented insight into the ultrafast interplay between structural and electronic dynamics. In this work we prove general applicability and establish the experimental conditions at FEL sources to minimize space charge effects and radiation damage. We investigate a bilayer pentacene film on Ag(110) by optical laser pump and FEL probe experiments. From the momentum microscopy sig…
The 1/f noise in pentacene thin film transistors has been measured as a function of device thickness from well above the effective conduction channel thickness to only two conducting layers. Over the entire thickness range, the spectral noise form is 1/f, and the noise parameter varies as (gate voltage)-1, confirming that the noise is due to mobility fluctuations, even in the thinnest films. Hooge's parameter varies as an inverse power-law with conductivity for all film thicknesses. The magnitude and transport characteristics of the spectral noise are well explained in terms of percolative eff…
In recent years, thin-film organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have begun to be considered as a possible alternative to the hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin-film transistors (a-Si:H TFT's) used in active matrix flat panel displays and other large-area electronics applications. Low-temperature processability, low-cost fabrication and compatibility with arbitrary substrates are some of the promising advantages of OFETs, among others. Of the many organic materials available, pentacene, in particular, is one of the leading candidates for use in current thin-film OFET architectures - this b…
We present a fast and efficient tight-binding (TB) method for simulating scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) imaging of adsorbate molecules on ultrathin insulating films. Due to the electronic decoupling of the molecule from the metal surface caused by the presence of the insulating overlayer, the STM images of the frontier molecular orbitals can be simulated using a very efficient scheme, which also enables the analysis of phase shifts in the STM current. Au-pentacene complex adsorbed on a NaCl bilayer on Cu substrate provides an intricate model system, which has been previously studied both …
The great majority of electronic and optoelectronic devices depends on interfaces between n-type and p-type semiconductors. Finding such matching donor-acceptor systems in molecular crystals remains a challenging endeavor. Structurally compatible molecules may not necessarily be suitable with respect to their optical and electronic properties: large exciton binding energies may favor bound electron-hole pairs rather than charge separation by exciton dissociation, and free, band-like transport is challenging to achieve as hopping commonly dominates charge motion. Structurally well-defined penta…
The growing interest in harnessing singlet fission for photovoltaic applications stems from the possibility of generating two excitons from a single photon. Quantum efficiencies above unity have been reported, yet the correlation between singlet fission and intermolecular geometry is poorly understood. To address this, we investigated ordered solid solutions of pentacene in p-terphenyl grown by organic molecular beam deposition. Two classes of dimers are expected from the crystal structure - parallel and herringbone - with intrinsically distinctive electronic coupling. Using electron paramagne…
We investigate electronic transport through pentacene thin-films intercalated with potassium. From temperature-dependent conductivity measurements we find that potassium-intercalated pentacene shows metallic behavior in a broad range of potassium concentrations. Surprisingly, the conductivity exhibits a re-entrance into an insulating state when the potassium concentration is increased past one atom per molecule. We analyze our observations theoretically by means of electronic structure calculations, and we conclude that the phenomenon originates from a Mott metal-insulator transition, driven b…
We present a comparative study of ultrafast photo-conversion dynamics in tetracene (Tc) and pentacene (Pc) single crystals and Pc films using optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Photo-induced absorption in Tc and Pc crystals is activated and temperature-independent respectively, demonstrating dominant singlet-triplet exciton fission. In Pc films (as well as C$_{60}$-doped films) this decay channel is suppressed by electron trapping. These results demonstrate the central role of crystallinity and purity in photogeneration processes and will constrain the design of future photovoltaic devices.
Organic electronic materials have potential applications in a number of low-cost, large area electronic devices such as flat panel displays and inexpensive solar panels. Small molecules in the series Anthracene, Tetracene, Pentacene, are model molecules for organic semiconductor thin films to be used as the active layers in such devices. This has motivated a number of studies of polyacene thin film growth and structure. Although the majority of these studies rely on vapor-deposited films, solvent-based deposition of films with improved properties onto non-crystalline substrates is desired for …
Possible conformations of the thioderivatives of pentacene (Pn) have been considered. The absorption spectra of polythiopentacene (PTPn) solutions and films have been studied. PTPn is revealed to be a mixture of Pn thioderivatives with different numbers of S atoms. After this mixture having been condensed in vacuum onto quartz substrates, its main components are tetrathiopentacene (TTPn) and hexathiopentacene (HTPn). The position of the maximum in the long-wave absorption bands of Pn thioderivatives is a linear function of the number of valence electrons in S atoms, which take part in the conj…
A printing process for high-resolution transfer of all components for organic electronic devices on plastic substrates has been developed and demonstrated for pentacene (Pn), poly (3-hexylthiophene) and carbon nanotube (CNT) thin-film transistors (TFTs). The nanotransfer printing process allows fabrication of an entire device without exposing any component to incompatible processes and with reduced need for special chemical preparation of transfer or device substrates. Devices on plastic substrates include a Pn TFT with a saturation, field-effect mobility of 0.09 cm^2 (Vs)^-1 and on/off ratio …
Charge-transfer excitons (CTX) at organic donor/acceptor interfaces are considered important intermediates for charge separation in photovoltaic devices. Crystalline model systems provide microscopic insights into the nature of such states as they enable microscopic structure-property investigations. Here, we use angular-resolved UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy to characterize the CTX of crystalline pentacene:perfluoro-pentacene (PEN:PFP) films allowing to determine the polarization of this state. This analysis is complemented by first-principles many-body calculations, performed on the three-d…
We present a simple but powerful method to determine the thicknesses of the accumulation and depletion layers and the distribution curve of injected carriers in organic field effect transistors. The conductivity of organic semiconductors in thin film transistors was measured in-situ and continuously with a bottom contact configuration, as a function of film thickness at various gate voltages. Using this method, the thicknesses of the accumulation and depletion layers of pentacene were determined to be 0.9 nm (VG=-15 V) and 5 nm (VG=15 V).
It is known in thin-film deposition that the density of nucleated clusters $N$ varies with the deposition rate $R$ as a power law, $N \sim R^α$. The exponent $α$ is a function of the critical nucleus size $i$ in a way that changes with the aggregation-limiting process active in a given system. We extend here to generic aggregation-limiting processes the derivation of the analytical capture-zone distribution function $P_β(s) = a_βs^β\exp(-b_βs^2)$ of Pimpinelli and Einstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 226102 (2007)]. We show that the exponent $β$ is generally related to the critical nucleus size $i$ …
The nucleation mechanisms during solution deposition of organic semiconductor thin films determine the grain morphology and may influence the crystalline packing in some cases. Here, in-situ optical spectromicroscopy in reflection mode is used to study the growth mechanisms and thermal stability of 6,13-bis(trisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene thin films. The results show that the films form in a supersaturated state before transforming to a solid film. Molecular aggregates corresponding to subcritical nuclei in the crystallization process are inferred from optical spectroscopy measurements of t…
We have used an electro-optic technique to measure the position-dependent infrared absorption of holes injected into a thin crystal of the organic semiconductor, 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene incorporated in a field-effect transistor. By applying square-wave voltages of variable frequency to the gate or drain, one can measure the time it takes for charges to accumulate on the surface, and therefore determine their mobility.
We have produced solution-processed thin films of 6,13-bis(triisopropyl-silylethynyl) pentacene with grain sizes from a few micrometers up to millimeter scale by lateral crystallization from a rectangular stylus. Grains are oriented along the crystallization direction, and the grain size transverse to the crystallization direction depends inversely on the writing speed, hence forming a regular array of oriented grain boundaries with controllable spacing. We utilize these controllable arrays to systematically study the role of large-angle grain boundaries in carrier transport and charge trappin…
We have measured the thermal resistances of thin films of the small molecule organic semiconductors bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pn), bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (TES-ADT) and difluoro bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (diF-TES-ADT). For each material, several films of different thicknesses have been measured to separate the effects of intrinsic thermal conductivity from interface thermal resistance. For non-crystalline films of all three materials, with thicknesses ranging from < 100 nm to > 4 microns, the thermal conductivities are similar to that o…
The spectral density of localized states in the band gap of pentacene (trap DOS) was determined with a pentacene-based thin-film transistor from measurements of the temperature dependence and gate-voltage dependence of the contact-corrected field-effect conductivity. Several analytical methods to calculate the trap DOS from the measured data were used to clarify, if the different methods lead to comparable results. We also used computer simulations to further test the results from the analytical methods. Most methods predict a trap DOS close to the valence band edge that can be very well appro…
We developed a novel method for obtaining the distribution of trapped carriers over their degree of localization in organic transistors, based on the fine analysis of electron spin resonance spectra at low enough temperatures where all carriers are localized. To apply the method to pentacene thin-film transistors, we proved through continuous wave saturation experiments that all carriers are localized at below 50 K. We analyzed the spectra at 20 K and found that the major groups of traps comprise localized states having wave functions spanning around 1.5 and 5 molecules and a continuous distri…
We show that it is possible to reach one of the ultimate goals of organic electronics: producing organic field-effect transistors with trap densities as low as in the bulk of single crystals. We studied the spectral density of localized states in the band gap (trap DOS) of small molecule organic semiconductors as derived from electrical characteristics of organic field-effect transistors or from space-charge-limited-current measurements. This was done by comparing data from a large number of samples including thin-film transistors (TFT's), single crystal field-effect transistors (SC-FET's) and…
The thesis focuses on study of optical and photovoltaic properties of iso-type and aniso-type heterostructures based on photosensitive layers of organic semiconductors. The primary attention has been paid on determination of optimal conditions for preparation of organic thin-film structures of methyl substituted perylene pigment, hexathiopentacene and SnCl2 phthalocyanine. These structures are perspective for fabrication of photosensitive heterostructures and can be used for development of effective photoconverters of solar energy. The influence of annealing and substrate temperature during th…
Synchrotron-based x-ray reflectivity is increasingly employed as an \textit{in situ} probe of surface morphology during thin film growth, but complete interpretation of the results requires modeling the growth process. Many models have been developed and employed for this purpose, yet no detailed, comparative studies of their scope and accuracy exists in the literature. Using experimental data obtained from hyperthermal deposition of pentane and diindenoperylene (DIP) on SiO$_2$, we compare and contrast three such models, both with each other and with detailed characterization of the surface m…
We use a frequency-dependent electro-optic technique to measure the hole mobility in small molecule organic semiconductors, such as 6,13 bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene. Measurements are made on semiconductor films in bottom gate, bottom contact field-effect transistors (FETs.) Because of the buried metal layer effect the maximum response, due to absorption in the charge layer, will be for a dielectric film ~ 1/4 of a wavelength (in the dielectric) (e.g. ~ 1 micron thick in the infrared.) Results are presented for FETs prepared with both spin-cast polymer and alumina dielectrics prepar…
We report a detailed comparison on the role of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of dipolar molecules on the threshold voltage and charge carrier mobility of organic field-effect transistor (OFET) made of both amorphous and polycrystalline organic semiconductors. We show that the same relationship between the threshold voltage and the dipole-induced charges in the SAM holds when both types of devices are fabricated on strictly identical base substrates. Charge carrier mobilities, almost constant for amorphous OFET, are not affected by the dipole in the SAMs, while for polycrystalline OFET (pent…
We develop an analytical method for the processing of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. The goal is to obtain the distributions of trapped carriers over both their degree of localization and their binding energy in semiconductor crystals or films composed of regularly aligned organic molecules [Phys. Rev. Lett. v. 104, 056602 (2010)]. Our method has two steps. We first carry out a fine analysis of the shape of the ESR spectra due to the trapped carriers; this reveals the distribution of the trap density of the states over the degree of localization. This analysis is based on the reasonabl…
Long-range and fast transport of coherent excitons is important for development of high-speed excitonic circuits and quantum computing applications. However, most of these coherent excitons have only been observed in some low-dimensional semiconductors when coupled with cavities, as there are large inhomogeneous broadening and dephasing effects on the exciton transport in their native states of the materials. Here, by confining coherent excitons at the 2D quantum limit, we firstly observed molecular aggregation enabled super-transport of excitons in atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) organic…

The complex admittance of metal/oxide/pentacene thin film junctions is investigated under ambient conditions. At low frequencies, a contribution attributed to proton diffusion through the oxide is seen. This diffusion is shown to be anomalous and is believed to be also at the origin of the bias stress effect observed in organic field effect transistors. At higher frequencies, two dipolar contributions are evidenced, attributed to defects located one at the organic/oxide interface or within the organic, and the other in the bulk of the oxide. These two dipolar responses show different dynamic p…
