Spin-1 Weyl point is formed by three bands touching at a single point in the three dimensional (3D) momentum space, with two of which show cone-like dispersion while the third band is flat. Such a triply degenerate point carries higher topological charge $\pm2$2 and can be described by a three-band Hamiltonian. We first propose a tight-binding model of a 3D Lieb lattice with chiral interlayer coupling to form the Spin-1 Weyl point. Then we design a chiral phononic crystal that carries these spin-1 Weyl points and special straight-type acoustic Fermi arcs. We also computationally demonstrate the robust propagation of the topologically protected surface states that can travel around a corner or defect without reflection. Our results pave a new way to manipulate acoustic waves in 3D structures and provide a platform for exploring energy transport properties in 3D spin-1 Weyl systems.
Ideal Weyl points, which are related by symmetry and thus reside at the same frequency, could promote the deep development and utilization of the Weyl physics. Although the ideal type-I Weyl points have been achieved in photonic crystals, the ideal type-II Weyl points with tilted cone-like band dispersions, are still beyond discovery. Here we realize ideal type-II Weyl points of minimal number in three-dimensional layer-stacked phononic crystals, and demonstrate topological phase transition from Weyl semimetal to valley insulators of two distinct types. The Fermi-arc surface states exist on th…
The discovery of Weyl semimetals opens the door for searching topological semimetals in physical science. The Weyl points are generally recognized as conventional, quadratic, spin-1, and those of high topological charges. Here we report the observation of the quadruple Weyl point of charge 4, the highest topological charge a twofold degenerate node can carry. Besides the quadruple Weyl point, the phononic semimetal also hosts conventional, quadratic, and spin-1 Weyl points, which stands as a system with yet the richest types of Weyl points. The quadruple-helicoid surface states, specific to th…
Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On the other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibi…
Weyl points (WPs) are isolated degeneracies carrying quantized topological charges, and are therefore robust against Hermitian perturbations. WPs are predicted to spread to the Weyl exceptional rings (WERs) in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Here, we use a one-dimensional (1D) Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) model to construct a Weyl semimetal in a 3D parameter space comprised of one reciprocal dimension and two synthetic dimensions. The inclusion of non-Hermiticity in the form of gain and loss produces a WER. The topology of the WER is characterized by both its topological charge and non-Hermitian …
By means of first-principles calculations and modeling analysis, we have predicted that the traditional 2D-graphene hosts the topological phononic Weyl-like points (PWs) and phononic nodal line (PNL) in its phonon spectrum. The phonon dispersion of graphene hosts three type-I PWs (both PW1 and PW2 at the BZ corners \emph{K} and \emph{K}', and PW3 locating along the $Γ$-\emph{K} line), one type-II PW4 locating along the $Γ$-\emph{M} line, and one PNL surrounding the centered $Γ$ point in the $q_{x,y}$ plane. The calculations further reveal that Berry curvatures are vanishingly zero throughout t…
By using \emph{ab initio} calculations and symmetry analysis, we define a new class of Weyl phonons, i.e., isolated Weyl phonons (IWPs), which are characterized by Chern number $\pm$2 or $\pm$4 in their acoustic phononic spectra and protected by the time inversion symmetry and point group symmetries. More importantly, their particular topological feature make them circumvent from the no-go theorem. Some high-symmetry points, behaving as isolated Weyl points in the space groups (SGs) of the related phononic systems, tend to form IWPs. As enumerated in Table I, the IWPs are located at the center…
The discovery of topological quantum states marks a new chapter in both condensed matter physics and materials sciences. By analogy to spin electronic system, topological concepts have been extended into phonons, boosting the birth of topological phononics (TPs). Here, we present a high-throughput screening and data-driven approach to compute and evaluate TPs among over 10,000 materials. We have clarified 5014 TP materials and classified them into single Weyl, high degenerate Weyl, and nodal-line (ring) TPs. Among them, three representative cases of TPs have been discussed in detail. Furthermo…
Phononic quantum networks feature distinct advantages over photonic networks for on-chip quantum communications, providing a promising platform for developing quantum computers with robust solid-state spin qubits. Large mechanical networks including one-dimensional chains of trapped ions, however, have inherent and well-known scaling problems. In addition, chiral phononic processes, which are necessary for conventional phononic quantum networks, are difficult to implement in a solid-state system. To overcome these seemingly unsolvable obstacles, we have developed a new network architecture tha…
Weyl points emerge as topological monopoles of Berry flux in the three-dimensional (3D) momentum space and have been extensively studied in topological semimetals. As the underlying topological principles apply to any type of waves under periodic boundary conditions, Weyl points can also be realized in classical wave systems, which are easier to engineer compared to condensed matter materials. Here, we made an acoustic Weyl phononic crystal by breaking space inversion (P) symmetry using a combination of slanted acoustic waveguides. We conducted angle-resolved transmission measurements to chara…
Weyl semimetals exhibitinging the topologically nontrivial touching points in electronic band dispersion of solids pave the wave way to novel electronic devices and functionalities. Here, we demonstrate the signature of topologically nontrivial Weyl points (WPs) in phonon dispersion of solids through a first-principles investigations. ofT noncentrosymmetric wurtzite CuI (cuprous iodide at high temperature). These type-II phononic WP in phonon dispersion of wurtzite CuI is manifested in noncentrosymmetric wurtzite CuI by six pairs of the nontrivial touching points in the k_z=0.0 plane. The idea…
Topological semimetal, hosting spin-1 Weyl point beyond Dirac and Weyl points, has attracted a great deal of attention. However, the spin-1 Weyl semimetal, which possesses exclusively the spin-1 Weyl points in a clean frequency window, without shadowed by any other nodal points, is yet to be discovered. Here, we report for the first time a spin-1 Weyl semimetal in a phononic crystal. Its spin-1 Weyl points, touched by two linear dispersions and an additional flat band, carry monopole charges (-2,0,2) or (2,0,-2) for the three bands from bottom to top, and result in double Fermi arcs existing b…
Weyl points are often believed to appear in pairs with opposite chirality. In this work, we show by first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis that single Weyl phonons with linear dispersion and double Weyl phonons with quadratic dispersion are simultaneously present between two specific phonon branches in realistic materials with trigonal or hexagonal lattices. These phonon Weyl points are guaranteed to locate at high-symmetry points due to the screw rotational symmetry, forming a unique triangular Weyl complex. In sharp contrast to conventional Weyl systems with surface arcs termina…
The possibility of realizing an electrostatically induced phononic crystal is investigated numerically in an acoustic waveguide based on a graphene sheet that is suspended over periodically arrayed electrodes. The application of dc voltage to these electrodes exerts electrostatic force on the graphene and this results in the periodic formation of stress in the waveguide structure in a non-invasive way, unlike the cases with mass loading and air holes. This non-invasive scheme enables a bandgap, namely a phononic crystal, to be created in the waveguide that can be used to dynamically tune the a…
Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), utilising localised mechanical vibrations, were pioneered for sensors, signal processors and to study macroscopic quantum mechanics. Increasingly the concept of integrating multiple mechanical elements via electrical/optical means has emerged as a challenge towards NEMS circuits. Here we develop phononic crystal waveguides (PnC WGs), using a 1-dimensional array of suspended membranes, that offer purely mechanical means to integrate isolated NEMS resonators. In the first steps to this objective, we demonstrate the PnC WG can support and guide mechanical vib…
Higher-order topological phases have raised widespread interest in recent years with the occurrence of the topological boundary states of dimension two or more less than that of the system bulk. The higher-order topological states have been verified in gapped phases, in a wide variety of systems, such as photonic and acoustic systems, and recently also observed in gapless semimetal phase, such as Weyl and Dirac phases, in systems alike. The higher-order topology is signaled by the hinge states emerging in the common bandgaps of the bulk states and the surface states. In this Letter, we report …
Soft materials can self-assemble into highly structured phases which replicate at the mesoscopic scale the symmetry of atomic crystals. As such, they offer an unparalleled platform to design mesostructured materials for light and sound. Here, we present a bottom-up approach based on self-assembly to engineer three-dimensional photonic and phononic crystals with topologically protected Weyl points. In addition to angular and frequency selectivity of their bulk optical response, Weyl materials are endowed with topological surface states, which allows for the existence of one-way channels even in…
Three dimensional Weyl semimetals exhibit open Fermi arcs on their sample surfaces connecting the projection of bulk Weyl points of opposite chirality. The canonical interpretation of these surfaces states is in terms of chiral edge modes of a layer quantum Hall effect: The two-dimensional momentum-space planes perpendicular to the momentum connecting the two Weyl points are characterized by a non-zero Chern number. It might be interesting to note, that in analogy to the known two-dimensional Floquet anomalous chiral edge states, one can realize open Fermi arcs in the absence of Chern numbers …
We formulate a linear response theory of the chiral magnetic effect in a finite Weyl semimetal, expressing the electrical current density $j$ induced by a slowly oscillating magnetic field $B$ or chiral chemical potential $μ$ in terms of the scattering matrix of Weyl fermions at the Fermi level. Surface conduction can be neglected in the infinite-system limit for $δj/δμ$, but not for $δj/δB$: The chirally circulating surface Fermi arcs give a comparable contribution to the bulk Weyl cones no matter how large the system is, because their smaller number is compensated by an increased flux sensit…
We consider finite-sized interfaces of a Weyl semi-metal and show that the corresponding confinement potential is similar to the application of a magnetic field. Among the numerous states, which can be labeled by indices n like in Landau levels, the n = 0 surface state describes the Weyl semimetal Fermi arc at a given chemical potential. Moreover, the analogy with a magnetic field shows that an external in-plane magnetic field can be used to distort the Fermi arc and would explain some features of magneto-transport in Weyl semimetals. We derive the Fermi arc for type-I and type-II Weyl semimet…
The Fermi arcs of topological surface states in the three-dimensional multi-Weyl semimetals on surfaces by a continuum model are investigated systematically. We calculated analytically the energy spectra and wave function for bulk quadratic- and cubic-Weyl semimetal with a single Weyl point. The Fermi arcs of topological surface states in Weyl semimetals with single- and double-pair Weyl points are investigated systematically. The evolution of the Fermi arcs of surface states variating with the boundary parameter is investigated and the topological Lifshitz phase transition of the Fermi arc co…
Physicists have discovered a novel topological semimetal, the Weyl semimetal, whose surface features a non-closed Fermi surface while the low energy quasiparticles in the bulk emerge as Weyl fermions. Here they share a brief review of the development and present perspectives on the next step forward.
In Weyl materials the valence and conduction electron bands touch at an even number of isolated points in the Brillouin zone. In the vicinity of these points the electron dispersion is linear and may be described by the massless Dirac equation. This results in nontrivial topology of Berry connection curvature. One of its consequences is the existence of peculiar surface electron states whose Fermi surfaces form arcs connecting projections of the Weyl points onto the surface plane. Band bending near the boundary of the crystal also produces surface states. We show that in Weyl materials band be…
The hallmark of Weyl semimetals is the existence of open constant-energy contours on their surface -- the so-called Fermi arcs -- connecting Weyl points. Here, we show that for time-reversal symmetric realizations of Weyl semimetals these Fermi arcs in many cases coexist with closed Fermi pockets originating from surface Dirac cones pinned to time-reversal invariant momenta. The existence of Fermi pockets is required for certain Fermi-arc connectivities due to additional restrictions imposed by the six $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariants characterizing a generic time-reversal invariant Weyl …
The Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of topological semimetal, of which topological surface states -- the Fermi arcs exist. In this paper, the Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals are classified into two classes -- class-1 and class-2. Based on a tight-binding model, the evolution and transport properties of class-1/2 Fermi arcs are studied via the tilting strength of the bulk Weyl cones. The (residual) anomalous Hall conductivity of topological surface states is a physical consequence of class-1 Fermi arc and thus class-1 Fermi arc becomes a nontrivial topological property for hybrid or type-II…
Most theoretical studies of tunneling in Dirac and the closely related Weyl semimetals have modeled these materials as single Weyl nodes described by the three-dimensional Dirac equation $H = v_f \vec{p}\cdot\vecσ$. The influence of scattering between the different valleys centered around different Weyl nodes, and the Fermi arc states which connect these nodes are hence not evident from these studies. In this work we study the tunneling in a thin film system of the Dirac semimetal $\text{Na}_3\text{Bi}$ consisting of a central segment with a gate potential, sandwiched between identical semi-in…
Weyl semimetals are gapless three-dimensional topological materials where two bands touch at even number of points in the Brillouin zone. In this work we study a zincblende lattice model realizing a time-reversal invariant Weyl semimetal. The bulk dynamics is decribed by twelve helical Weyl nodes. Surface states form a peculiar quasi two-dimensional helical metal fundamentally different from the Dirac form typical for topological insulators. Allowed direction of velocity and spin of low-energy surface excitations are locked to the cubic symmetry axes. The studied system illustrates general pro…
We show that Weyl Fermi arcs are generically accompanied by a divergence of the surface Berry curvature scaling as $1/k^2$, where $k$ is the distance to a hot-line in the surface Brillouin zone that connects the projection of Weyl nodes with opposite chirality but which is distinct from the Fermi arc itself. Such surface Berry curvature appears whenever the bulk Weyl dispersion has a velocity tilt toward the surface of interest. This divergence is reflected in a variety of Berry curvature mediated effects that are readily accessible experimentally, and in particular leads to a surface Berry cu…
Based on $k\cdot p$ analysis and realistic tight-binding calculations, we find that time-reversal-breaking Weyl semimetals can be realized in magnetically-doped (Mn, Eu, Cr etc.) Sn$_{1-x}$Pb$_x$(Te,Se) class of topological crystalline insulators. All the Weyl points are well separated in momentum space and possess nearly the same energy due to high crystalline symmetry. Moreover, both the Weyl points and Fermi arcs are highly tunable by varying Pb/Sn composition, pressure, magnetization, temperature, surface potential etc., opening up the possibility of manipulating Weyl points and rewiring t…
A signature property of Weyl semimetals is the existence of topologically protected surface states - arcs in momentum space that connect Weyl points in the bulk. However, the presence of bulks states makes detection of surface contributions to the transport challenging. Here we present a magnetoresistance study of high-quality samples of the prototypical Weyl semimetal, TaAs. By measuring the Shubnikov de Haas effect, we reveal the presence of a two-dimensional cyclotron orbit. This orbit is quantitatively consistent with the interference of coherent quasiparticles traversing two distinct Ferm…
Very recently, novel quasiparticles beyond those mimicking the elementary high-energy particles such as Dirac and Weyl fermions have attracted great interest in condensed matter physics and materials science1-9. Here we report the first experimental observation of the long-desired quadratic Weyl points10 by using a three-dimensional chiral metacrystal of sound waves. Markedly different from the newly observed unconventional quasiparticles5-9, such as the spin-1 Weyl points and the charge-2 Dirac points that are featured respectively with threefold and fourfold band crossings, the charge-2 Weyl…
Connecting nanoscale mechanical resonators to microwave quantum circuits opens new avenues for storing, processing, and transmitting quantum information. In this work, we couple a phononic crystal cavity to a tunable superconducting quantum circuit. By fabricating a one-dimensional periodic pattern in a thin film of lithium niobate and introducing a defect in this artificial lattice, we localize a 6 gigahertz acoustic resonance to a wavelength-scale volume of less than one cubic micron. The strong piezoelectricity of lithium niobate efficiently couples the localized vibrations to the electric …
Fermi arc surface states, the manifestation of the bulk-edge correspondence in Weyl semimetals, have attracted much research interest. In contrast to the conventional Fermi loop, the disconnected Fermi arcs provide an exotic 2D system for exploration of novel physical effects on the surface of Weyl semimetals. Here, we propose that visible conductance oscillation can be achieved in the planar junctions fabricated on the surface of Weyl semimetal with a pair of Fermi arcs. It is shown that Fabry-Pérot-type interference inside the 2D junction can generate conductance oscillation with its visibil…
Bulk-surface correspondence in Weyl semimetals assures the formation of topological "Fermi-arc" surface bands whose existence is guaranteed by bulk Weyl nodes. By investigating three distinct surface terminations of the ferromagnetic semimetal Co3Sn2S2 we verify spectroscopically its classification as a time reversal symmetry broken Weyl semimetal. We show that the distinct surface potentials imposed by three different terminations modify the Fermi-arc contour and Weyl node connectivity. On the Sn surface we identify intra-Brillouin zone Weyl node connectivity of Fermi-arcs, while on Co termin…
Weyl semimetals constitute a newly discovered class of three-dimensional topological materials with linear touchings of valence and conduction bands in the bulk. The most striking property of topological origin in these materials, so far unequivocally observed only in photoemission experiments, is the presence of open constant-energy contours at the boundary --- the so-called Fermi arcs. In this work, we establish the universal characteristics of Fermi-arc contributions to surface quasiparticle interference. Using a general phenomenological model, we determine the defining interference pattern…
We study dispersions of Fermi arcs in the Weyl semimetal phase by constructing a simple effective model. We calculate how the surface Fermi-arc dispersions for the top- and bottom surfaces merge into the bulk Dirac cones in the Weyl semimetal at both ends of the arcs, and show that they have opposite velocities. This result is also confirmed by a calculation using a tight-binding model. Furthermore, by changing a parameter in the system while preserving time-reversal symmetry, we show that two Fermi arcs evolve into a surface Dirac cone when the system transits from the Weyl semimetal to the t…
We propose an analytical model describing Fermi arc surface states observed in the recent investigations of Weyl semimetals. The effective two-valley Hamiltonian is supplemented by the boundary conditions taking into account both the intravalley and intervalley interfacial interaction. We demonstrate that the latter is crucial for the formation of the surface states having the form consistent with the experimental data. Depending on the magnitude and interplay between the intravalley and intervalley interactions, the Fermi arc connects two nearby or distant valleys. Moreover, the emergence of …
The recent experimental discovery of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs provides the first observation of a Weyl fermion in nature and demonstrates a novel type of anomalous surface state band structure, consisting of Fermi arcs. So far, work has focused on Weyl semimetals with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, Weyl semimetals with weak SOC may allow tunable spin-splitting for device applications and may exhibit a crossover to a spinless topological phase, such as a Dirac line semimetal in the case of spinless TaAs. NbP, isostructural to TaAs, may realize the first Weyl semimetal in the limit o…
The surface of a Weyl semimetal (WSM) displays Fermi arcs, i.e. disjoint segments of a two-dimensional Fermi contour. We present a quantum-mechanical non-local theory of chiral Fermi arc plasmons in WSMs with broken time-reversal symmetry. These are collective excitations constructed from topological Fermi arc and bulk electron states and arising from electron-electron interactions, which are treated in the realm of the random phase approximation. Our theory includes quantum effects associated with the penetration of the Fermi arc surface states into the bulk and dissipation, which is intrinsi…
One of the main features of Weyl semimetals is the existence of Fermi arc surface states at their surface, which cannot be realized in pure two-dimensional systems in the absence of many-body interactions. Due to the gapless bulk of the semimetal, it is, however, challenging to observe clear signatures from the Fermi arc surface states. Here, we propose to detect such novel surface states via perfect negative refraction that occurs between two adjacent open surfaces with properly orientated Fermi arcs. Specifically, this phenomenon visibly manifests in non-local transport measurement, where th…
In the recently discovered Weyl semimetals, the Fermi surface may feature disjoint, open segments -- the so-called Fermi arcs -- associated with topological states bound to exposed crystal surfaces. Here we show that the collective dynamics of electrons near such surfaces sharply departs from that of a conventional three-dimensional metal. In magnetic systems with broken time reversal symmetry, the resulting Fermi arc plasmons (FAPs) are chiral, with dispersion relations featuring open, hyperbolic constant frequency contours. As a result, a large range of surface plasmon wave vectors can be su…
We re-examine the question of quantum oscillations from surface Fermi arcs and chiral modes in Weyl semimetals. By introducing two tools - semiclassical phase-space quantization and a numerical implementation of a layered construction of Weyl semimetals - we discover several important generalizations to previous conclusions that were implicitly tailored to the special case of identical Fermi arcs on top and bottom surfaces. We show that the phase-space quantization picture fixes an ambiguity in the previously utilized energy-time quantization approach and correctly reproduces the numerically c…
Weyl semimetals are known to host massless surface states called Fermi arcs. These Fermi arcs are the manifestation of the bulk-edge correspondence in topological matter and thus are analogous to the topological chiral surface states of topological insulators. It has been shown that the latter, depending on the smoothness of the surface, host massive Volkov-Pankratov(VP) states that coexist with the chiral ones. Here, we investigate these VP states in the framework of Weyl semimetals, namely their density of states and magneto-optical response. We find the selection rules corresponding to opti…
We analyze junctions between noninteracting fermionic topological phases. A closed-form condition for the existence of localized modes at the interface is derived using the transfer matrix approach. These analytical conditions as well as numerical exact diagonalization are used to study interfaces between Weyl semimetals. We observe a Fermi arc reconstruction at the interface, leading to curves of zero energy modes in the interface Brillouin zone. These are stable even in certain cases where the two Weyl semimetals differ only in their Fermi arc connectivities.
Three-dimensional Weyl semimetals have pairs of topologically protected Weyl nodes, whose projections onto the surface Brillouin zone are the end points of zero energy surface states called Fermi arcs. At the endpoints of the Fermi arcs, surface states extend into and are hybridized with the bulk. Here, we consider a two-dimensional junction of two identical Weyl semimetals whose surfaces are twisted with respect to each other and tunnel-coupled. Confining ourselves to commensurate angles (such that a larger unit cell preserves a reduced translation symmetry at the interface) enables us to ana…
The Weyl semimetal phase is a recently discovered topological quantum state of matter characterized by the presence of topologically protected degeneracies near the Fermi level. These degeneracies are the source of exotic phenomena, including the realization of chiral Weyl fermions as quasiparticles in the bulk and the formation of Fermi arc states on the surfaces. Here, we demonstrate that these two key signatures show distinct evolutions with the bulk band topology by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, supported by first-principle calculations, on transition-metal monophos…
Weyl semimetals harbor topological Fermi-arc surface states which determine the nontrivial charge current response to external fields. We here study the quasiparticle decay rate of Fermi arc states arising from their coupling to acoustic phonons, as well as the phonon-limited conductivity tensor for a clean Weyl semimetal slab. Using the phonon modes for an isotropic elastic continuum with a deformation potential coupling to electrons, we determine the temperature dependence of the quasiparticle decay rate, both near and far away from the arc termination points. By solving the coupled Boltzman…
Fermi arc surface states are the hallmark of Weyl semimetals, whose identification is usually challenged by their coexistence with gapless bulk states. Surface transport measurements by fabricating setups on the sample boundary provide a natural solution to this problem. Here, we study the Andreev reflection (AR) in a planar normal metal-superconductor junction on the Weyl semimetal surface with a pair of Fermi arcs. For a conserved transverse momentum, the occurrence of normal reflection depends on the relative orientation between the Fermi arcs and the normal of the junction, which is a dire…
