Fermi arc surface states are the hallmark of Weyl semimetals, whose identification is usually challenged by their coexistence with gapless bulk states. Surface transport measurements by fabricating setups on the sample boundary provide a natural solution to this problem. Here, we study the Andreev reflection (AR) in a planar normal metal-superconductor junction on the Weyl semimetal surface with a pair of Fermi arcs. For a conserved transverse momentum, the occurrence of normal reflection depends on the relative orientation between the Fermi arcs and the normal of the junction, which is a direct result of the disconnected Fermi arcs. Consequently, a crossover from the suppressed to perfect AR occurs with varying the orientation of the planar junction, giving rise to a change from double-peak to plateau structure in conductance spectra. Moreover, such a crossover can be facilitated by imposing a magnetic field, making electrons slide along the Fermi arcs so as to switch between two regimes of the AR. Our results provide a decisive signature for the detection of Fermi arcs and open the possibilities of exploring novel phenomenology through their interplay with superconductivity.
We study the quantum transport behavior of a normal-superconductor-normal junction based on type-II Weyl semimetal, which is arranged in the tilting direction of the Weyl semimetal. We find that both the crossed Andreev reflection and normal reflection are forbidden, while there will be double Andreev reflections and double electron transmissions for the incident electron from the semimetal side. Andreev reflections and transmissions occur both in the retro and specular directions simultaneously, symmetric about the normal of the interface but with different amplitudes, depending on the angle …
A Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry has a minimum of two species of Weyl fermions, distinguished by their opposite chirality, in a pair of Weyl cones at opposite momenta $\pm K$ that are displaced in the direction of the magnetization. Andreev reflection at the interface between a Weyl semimetal in the normal state (N) and a superconductor (S) that pairs $\pm K$ must involve a switch of chirality, otherwise it is blocked. We show that this "chirality blockade" suppresses the superconducting proximity effect when the magnetization lies in the plane of the NS interface. A Zeeman …
We study transport through a Weyl semimetal quantum dot sandwiched between an $s$-wave superconductor and a normal lead. The conductance peaks at regular intervals and exhibits double periodicity with respect to two characteristic frequencies of the system, one that originates from Klein tunneling in the system and the other coming from the chiral nature of the excitations. Using a scattering matrix approach as well as a lattice simulation, we demonstrate the universal features of the conductance through the system and discuss the feasibility of observing them in experiments.
We study the Andreev reflections (ARs) at the interface of the type-II Weyl semimetal-superconductor junctions and find double ARs when the superconductor is put in the Weyl semimetal band tilting direction, which is similar to the double reflections of light in anisotropic crystals. The directions of the double (retro and specular) ARs are symmetric about the normal due to the hyperboloidal Fermi surface near the Weyl nodes, but with different AR amplitudes depending on the direction and energy of the incident electron. When the normal direction of the Weyl semimetal-superconductor interface …
We experimentally investigate charge transport through the interface between a niobium superconductor and a three-dimensional WTe$_2$ Weyl semimetal. In addition to classical Andreev reflection, we observe sharp non-periodic subgap resistance resonances. From an analysis of their positions, magnetic field and temperature dependencies, we can interpret them as an analog of Tomasch oscillations for transport along the topological surface state across the region of proximity-induced superconductivity at the Nb-WTe$_2$ interface. Observation of distinct geometrical resonances implies a specific tr…
We experimentally investigate the magnetic field dependence of Andreev transport through a region of proximity-induced superconductivity in CoSi topological chiral semimetal. With increasing parallel to the CoSi surface magnetic field, the sharp subgap peaks, associated with Andreev bound states, move together to nearly-zero bias position, while there is only monotonous peaks suppression for normal to the surface fields. The zero-bias $dV/dI$ resistance value is perfectly stable with changing the in-plane magnetic field. As the effects are qualitatively similar for In and Nb superconducting le…
Being encouraged by the interplay between topology, superconductivity and magnetism, we experimentally investigate charge transport through the interface between the Nb superconductor and the time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. In addition to the proximity induced superconducting gap, we observe several subgap features, among which the most interesting is the prominent subgap zero-bias anomaly, absolutely stable against external magnetic fields up to the critical field of Nb. As the promising scenario for the zero-bias anomaly to appear in transport characteristic…
We investigate electron transport through the interface between a niobium superconductor and the edge of a two-dimensional semimetal, realized in a 20~nm wide HgTe quantum well. Experimentally, we observe that typical behavior of a single Andreev contact is complicated by both a pronounced zero-bias resistance anomaly and shallow subgap resistance oscillations with $1/n$ periodicity. These results are demonstrated to be independent of the superconducting material and should be regarded as specific to a 2D semimetal in a proximity with a superconductor. We interpret these effects to originate f…
We theoretically study low energy electric transport in a junction consisting of a Weyl semimetal and a metallic superconductor. The characteristic features of the differential conductance depend on the relative directions between the current and the vector connecting the two Weyl points. When the electric current is perpendicular to the vector, the conductance spectra are sensitive to the direction and the amplitude of magnetic moment at the junction interface. This is a direct consequence of the chiral spin configuration on the fermi surface near the Weyl points.
Electrons in a Dirac semimetals possess linear dispersion in all three spatial dimensions, and form part of a developing platform of novel quantum materials. Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$ supports a three-dimensional Dirac cone at the Sb-induced band inversion point. Nanoscale phase-sensitive junction technology is used to induce superconductivity in this Dirac semimetal. Radio frequency irradiation experiments reveal a significant contribution of 4$π$-periodic Andreev bound states to the supercurrent in Nb-Bi$_{0.97}$Sb$_{0.03}$-Nb Josephson junctions. The conditions for a substantial $4π$ contribution to…
We propose a universal method to detect the specular Andreev reflection taking the simple two dimensional Weyl nodal-line semimetal-superconductor double-junction structure as an example. The quasiclassical quantization conditions are established for the energy levels of bound states formed in the middle semimetal along a closed path. The establishment of the conditions is completely based on the intrinsic character of the specularly reflected hole which has the same sign relation of its wave vector and group velocity with the incident electron. This brings about the periodic oscillation of co…
We find that the vortex bound states in superconducting topological semimetals are gapless owing to topological massless excitations in their normal states. We demonstrate this universal result in a variety of semimetals including Dirac and Weyl semimetals, threefold degenerate spin-1 fermions, spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl fermion semimetals and other exotic fermion semimetals. The formation of these gapless bound states are closely related to their Andreev specular reflection and propagating Andreev modes in $π$ phase superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. We further de…
Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ has recently emerged as a ferromagnetic Weyl semi-metal. Theoretical investigation of the spin-split bands predicted half metalicity in the compound. Here, we report the detection of a spin polarized supercurrent through a Nb/Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ point contact where Andreev reflection is seen to be large indicating a large deviation from half metallicity. In fact, analysis of the Andreev reflection spectra reveals only 50\% spin polarization at the Fermi level of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. Our theoretical calculations of electronic Density of States (DOS) reveal a spin depolarizing effe…
We experimentally investigate charge transport through a single planar junction between Cd$_3$As$_2$ Dirac semimetal and a normal Au lead. For non-superconducting bulk Cd$_3$As$_2$ samples, we observe non-Ohmic $dV/dI(V)$ curves, which strongly resemble standard Andreev reflection with well-defined superconducting gap. Andreev-like behavior is demonstrated for Cd$_3$As$_2$ samples with different surface and contact preparation techniques. We connect this behavior with surface superconductivity due to the flat-band formation in Cd$_3$As$_2$, which has been predicted theoretically. The conclusio…
Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is an intriguing effect that occurs in a normal-superconductor-normal junction. In CAR, an incoming electron from one terminal is coherently scattered as an outgoing hole into the other terminal. Here, we reveal that there exists a transverse spatial shift in CAR, i.e., the plane of CAR for the outgoing hole may have a sizable transverse shift from the plane of incidence for the incoming electron. We explicitly demonstrate the effect in a model system based on Weyl semimetals. We further show that the effect is quite general and exists when the terminals have s…
An incoming electron is reflected back as a hole at a normal-metal-superconductor interface, a process known as Andreev reflection. We predict that there exists a universal transverse shift in this process due to the effect of spin-orbit coupling in the normal metal. Particularly, using both the scattering approach and the argument of angular momentum conservation, we demonstrate that the shifts are pronounced for lightly-doped Weyl semimetals, and are opposite for incoming electrons with different chirality, generating a chirality-dependent Hall effect for the reflected holes. The predicted s…
Perfect crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) is striking for high-efficiency Cooper pair splitting which bears promising applications in quantum communication. Recent experimental advances have disclosed the way to explore CAR in Dirac fermion systems under ultra-strong magnetic fields. We develop a scattering approach to study quantum Hall-superconductor-quantum Hall (QH-S-QH) junctions formed by a two-dimensional (2D) time-reversal symmetric Dirac semimetal. We propose two different setups of the hybrid junction in the quantum limit where only zeroth Landau levels are involved in transport to ex…
Physicists have discovered a novel topological semimetal, the Weyl semimetal, whose surface features a non-closed Fermi surface while the low energy quasiparticles in the bulk emerge as Weyl fermions. Here they share a brief review of the development and present perspectives on the next step forward.
One of the main features of Weyl semimetals is the existence of Fermi arc surface states at their surface, which cannot be realized in pure two-dimensional systems in the absence of many-body interactions. Due to the gapless bulk of the semimetal, it is, however, challenging to observe clear signatures from the Fermi arc surface states. Here, we propose to detect such novel surface states via perfect negative refraction that occurs between two adjacent open surfaces with properly orientated Fermi arcs. Specifically, this phenomenon visibly manifests in non-local transport measurement, where th…
We consider finite-sized interfaces of a Weyl semi-metal and show that the corresponding confinement potential is similar to the application of a magnetic field. Among the numerous states, which can be labeled by indices n like in Landau levels, the n = 0 surface state describes the Weyl semimetal Fermi arc at a given chemical potential. Moreover, the analogy with a magnetic field shows that an external in-plane magnetic field can be used to distort the Fermi arc and would explain some features of magneto-transport in Weyl semimetals. We derive the Fermi arc for type-I and type-II Weyl semimet…
We propose a one-parameter family of noninteracting lattice models for Weyl semimetals with 4 Weyl nodes and tunable Fermi arcs. These 2-band model Hamiltonians are time-reversal symmetric with $\mathrm{T}^2 = + 1$, and tuning the parameter changes the connectivity of the Fermi arcs continuously without affecting the location and chiralities of the Weyl nodes in the bulk Brillouin zone. The bulk polarization and magnetization are shown to vary with this parameter, a dependence inaccessible to the low energy effective field theory.
Floquet engineering, the concept of tailoring a system by a periodic drive, is increasingly exploited to design and manipulate topological phases of matter. In this work, we study periodically driven higher-order topological Dirac semimetals associated with a $k$-dependent quantized quadrupole moment by applying circularly polarized light. The undriven Dirac semimetals feature gapless higher-order hinge Fermi arc states which are the consequence of the higher-order topology of the Dirac nodes. Floquet Weyl semimetal phases with hybrid-order topology, characterized by both a $k$-dependent quant…
The hallmark of Weyl semimetals is the existence of open constant-energy contours on their surface -- the so-called Fermi arcs -- connecting Weyl points. Here, we show that for time-reversal symmetric realizations of Weyl semimetals these Fermi arcs in many cases coexist with closed Fermi pockets originating from surface Dirac cones pinned to time-reversal invariant momenta. The existence of Fermi pockets is required for certain Fermi-arc connectivities due to additional restrictions imposed by the six $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariants characterizing a generic time-reversal invariant Weyl …
Weyl semimetals constitute a newly discovered class of three-dimensional topological materials with linear touchings of valence and conduction bands in the bulk. The most striking property of topological origin in these materials, so far unequivocally observed only in photoemission experiments, is the presence of open constant-energy contours at the boundary --- the so-called Fermi arcs. In this work, we establish the universal characteristics of Fermi-arc contributions to surface quasiparticle interference. Using a general phenomenological model, we determine the defining interference pattern…
We propose an analytical model describing Fermi arc surface states observed in the recent investigations of Weyl semimetals. The effective two-valley Hamiltonian is supplemented by the boundary conditions taking into account both the intravalley and intervalley interfacial interaction. We demonstrate that the latter is crucial for the formation of the surface states having the form consistent with the experimental data. Depending on the magnitude and interplay between the intravalley and intervalley interactions, the Fermi arc connects two nearby or distant valleys. Moreover, the emergence of …
The disjointed Fermi-arcs in Weyl semimetals can intertwine with chiral bulk modes and participate in unusual closed magnetic orbits in the presence of a vertical magnetic field. Here we carry out the quantum oscillation study of such unusual Weyl magnetic orbits in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2, a close cousin of Weyl semimetals. We find that extra two-dimensional (2D) quantum oscillations emerge at high field, which superimpose on 3D bulk background and can be attributed to the Weyl magnetic orbits, when the thickness of nanoplates is smaller than the mean free path of the electrons. Further eviden…
We re-examine the question of quantum oscillations from surface Fermi arcs and chiral modes in Weyl semimetals. By introducing two tools - semiclassical phase-space quantization and a numerical implementation of a layered construction of Weyl semimetals - we discover several important generalizations to previous conclusions that were implicitly tailored to the special case of identical Fermi arcs on top and bottom surfaces. We show that the phase-space quantization picture fixes an ambiguity in the previously utilized energy-time quantization approach and correctly reproduces the numerically c…
The surface of a Weyl semimetal (WSM) displays Fermi arcs, i.e. disjoint segments of a two-dimensional Fermi contour. We present a quantum-mechanical non-local theory of chiral Fermi arc plasmons in WSMs with broken time-reversal symmetry. These are collective excitations constructed from topological Fermi arc and bulk electron states and arising from electron-electron interactions, which are treated in the realm of the random phase approximation. Our theory includes quantum effects associated with the penetration of the Fermi arc surface states into the bulk and dissipation, which is intrinsi…
Weyl semimetals are gapless three-dimensional topological materials where two bands touch at even number of points in the Brillouin zone. In this work we study a zincblende lattice model realizing a time-reversal invariant Weyl semimetal. The bulk dynamics is decribed by twelve helical Weyl nodes. Surface states form a peculiar quasi two-dimensional helical metal fundamentally different from the Dirac form typical for topological insulators. Allowed direction of velocity and spin of low-energy surface excitations are locked to the cubic symmetry axes. The studied system illustrates general pro…
In the recently discovered Weyl semimetals, the Fermi surface may feature disjoint, open segments -- the so-called Fermi arcs -- associated with topological states bound to exposed crystal surfaces. Here we show that the collective dynamics of electrons near such surfaces sharply departs from that of a conventional three-dimensional metal. In magnetic systems with broken time reversal symmetry, the resulting Fermi arc plasmons (FAPs) are chiral, with dispersion relations featuring open, hyperbolic constant frequency contours. As a result, a large range of surface plasmon wave vectors can be su…
Fermi arc surface states, the manifestation of the bulk-edge correspondence in Weyl semimetals, have attracted much research interest. In contrast to the conventional Fermi loop, the disconnected Fermi arcs provide an exotic 2D system for exploration of novel physical effects on the surface of Weyl semimetals. Here, we propose that visible conductance oscillation can be achieved in the planar junctions fabricated on the surface of Weyl semimetal with a pair of Fermi arcs. It is shown that Fabry-Pérot-type interference inside the 2D junction can generate conductance oscillation with its visibil…
The recent experimental discovery of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs provides the first observation of a Weyl fermion in nature and demonstrates a novel type of anomalous surface state band structure, consisting of Fermi arcs. So far, work has focused on Weyl semimetals with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, Weyl semimetals with weak SOC may allow tunable spin-splitting for device applications and may exhibit a crossover to a spinless topological phase, such as a Dirac line semimetal in the case of spinless TaAs. NbP, isostructural to TaAs, may realize the first Weyl semimetal in the limit o…
Andreev reflection (AR) refers to the electron-hole conversion at the normal metal-superconductor interface. In a three-dimensional metal with spherical Fermi surface, retro (specular) AR can occur with the sign reversal of all three (a single) components of particle velocity. Here, we predict a novel type of AR with the inversion of two velocity components, dubbed "anomalous-trajectory Andreev reflection" (AAR), which can be realized in a class of materials with torus-shaped Fermi surface, such as doped nodal line semimetals. For its toroidal circle perpendicular to the interface, the Fermi t…
Weyl semimetals are known to host massless surface states called Fermi arcs. These Fermi arcs are the manifestation of the bulk-edge correspondence in topological matter and thus are analogous to the topological chiral surface states of topological insulators. It has been shown that the latter, depending on the smoothness of the surface, host massive Volkov-Pankratov(VP) states that coexist with the chiral ones. Here, we investigate these VP states in the framework of Weyl semimetals, namely their density of states and magneto-optical response. We find the selection rules corresponding to opti…
A signature property of Weyl semimetals is the existence of topologically protected surface states - arcs in momentum space that connect Weyl points in the bulk. However, the presence of bulks states makes detection of surface contributions to the transport challenging. Here we present a magnetoresistance study of high-quality samples of the prototypical Weyl semimetal, TaAs. By measuring the Shubnikov de Haas effect, we reveal the presence of a two-dimensional cyclotron orbit. This orbit is quantitatively consistent with the interference of coherent quasiparticles traversing two distinct Ferm…
We experimentally study electron transport between two superconducting indium leads, coupled to the WTe$_2$ crystal surface. WTe$_2$ is characterized by presence of Fermi arc surface states, as a predicted type-II Weyl semimetal candidate. We demonstrate Josephson current in unprecedentedly long 5~$μ$m In-WTe$_2$-In junctions, which is confirmed by $I-V$ curves evolution with temperature and magnetic field. The Josephson current is mostly carried by the topological surface states, which we demonstrate in a double-slit SQUID geometry, realized by coupling the opposite WTe$_2$ crystal surfaces.
Weyl semimetals harbor topological Fermi-arc surface states which determine the nontrivial charge current response to external fields. We here study the quasiparticle decay rate of Fermi arc states arising from their coupling to acoustic phonons, as well as the phonon-limited conductivity tensor for a clean Weyl semimetal slab. Using the phonon modes for an isotropic elastic continuum with a deformation potential coupling to electrons, we determine the temperature dependence of the quasiparticle decay rate, both near and far away from the arc termination points. By solving the coupled Boltzman…
The surface Fermi arc, as a hallmark of Weyl semimetals (WSMs), has been well known in current research, but it remains a challenge to unveil novel phenomena associated with the Fermi arc. Here, we predict a heretofore unrecognized process in WSMs, namely, the photoinduced transition between the bulk states and the Fermi arc. We find this process is significant and can lead to a large effective three-dimensional shift current on the boundaries with the Fermi arc in wide terahertz range. Moreover, due to the low symmetry of the boundaries, the surface photogalvanic effect predicted here can app…
In topological Weyl semimetals, the low energy excitations are comprised of linearly dispersing Weyl fermions, which act as monopoles of Berry curvature in momentum space and result in topologically protected Fermi arcs on the surfaces. We propose that these Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals lead to an anisotropic magnetothermal conductivity, strongly dependent on externally applied magnetic field and resulting from entropy transport driven by circulating electronic currents. The circulating currents result in no net charge transport, but they do result in a net entropy transport. This translates …
We study the low-energy single-electron transport across a junction of two magnetic Weyl semimetals, in which the anisotropy axes are tilted one respect to the other. Using a two-band model with a potential step, we compute the transmission factor for normal and Klein tunneling and the refraction properties of the interface as a function of the tilt angle. We show that the interface acts as a beam splitter, separating electrons with different chiralities. We also characterize interface states, only appearing for finite tilt angle, which connect the projection of the Fermi surfaces on the two s…
We experimentally investigate charge transport through a single planar junction between a NiTe$_2$ Dirac semimetal and a normal gold lead. At millikelvin temperatures we observe non-Ohmic $dV/dI(V)$ behavior resembling Andreev reflection at a superconductor -- normal metal interface, while NiTe$_2$ bulk remains non-superconducting. The conclusion on superconductivity is also supported by suppression of the effect by temperature and magnetic field. In analogy with the known results for Cd$_3$As$_2$ Dirac semimetal, we connect this behavior with interfacial superconductivity due to the flat-band…
Topological semimetals in crystals with a chiral structure (which possess a handedness due to a lack of mirror and inversion symmetries) are expected to display numerous exotic physical phenomena, including fermionic excitations with large topological charge [1], long Fermi arc surface states [2,3], unusual magnetotransport [4] and lattice dynamics [5], as well as a quantized response to circularly polarized light [6]. To date, all experimentally confirmed topological semimetals exist in crystals that contain mirror operations, meaning that these properties do not appear. Here, we show that Al…
Fermi arc states are features of Weyl semimetal (WSM) surfaces which are robust due to the topological character of the bulk band structure. We demonstrate that Fermi arcs may undergo profound restructurings when surfaces of different systems with a well-defined twist angle are tunnel-coupled. The twisted WSM interface supports a moiré pattern which may be approximated as a periodic system with large real-space unit cell. States bound to the interface emerge, with interesting consequences for the magneto-oscillations expected when a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the system surface…
The recent discovery of the first Weyl semimetal in TaAs provides the first observation of a Weyl fermion in nature. Such a topological semimetal features a novel type of anomalous surface state, the Fermi arc, which connects a pair of Weyl nodes through the boundary of the crystal. Here, we present theoretical calculations of the quasi-particle interference (QPI) patterns that arise from the surface states including the topological Fermi arcs in the Weyl semimetals TaAs and NbP. Most importantly, we discover that the QPI exhibits termination-points that are fingerprints of the Weyl nodes in t…
Three-dimensional Weyl semimetals have pairs of topologically protected Weyl nodes, whose projections onto the surface Brillouin zone are the end points of zero energy surface states called Fermi arcs. At the endpoints of the Fermi arcs, surface states extend into and are hybridized with the bulk. Here, we consider a two-dimensional junction of two identical Weyl semimetals whose surfaces are twisted with respect to each other and tunnel-coupled. Confining ourselves to commensurate angles (such that a larger unit cell preserves a reduced translation symmetry at the interface) enables us to ana…
The recent discovery of the first Weyl semimetal in TaAs provides the first observation of a Weyl fermion in nature and demonstrates a novel type of anomalous surface state, the Fermi arc. Like topological insulators, the bulk topological invariants of a Weyl semimetal are uniquely fixed by the surface states of a bulk sample. Here, we present a set of distinct conditions, accessible by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), each of which demonstrates topological Fermi arcs in a surface state band structure, with minimal reliance on calculation. We apply these results to TaAs and N…
Creating and manipulating topological states is a key goal of condensed matter physics. Periodic driving offers a powerful method to manipulate electronic states, and even to create topological states in solids. Here, we investigate the tunable Floquet states in a periodically driven higher-order nodal line semimetal with both spatial inversion and time-reversal symmetries. We found that the Floquet Weyl semimetal states, which support both one-dimensional hinge Fermi arc and two-dimensional surface Fermi arc states, can be induced in the higher-order nodal-line semimetal by shining circularly…
We study longitudinal transport in Weyl semimetal nanowires, both in the absence and in the presence of a magnetic flux threading the nanowires. We identify two qualitatively different regimes of transport with respect to the chemical potential in the nanowires. In the "surface regime", for low doping, most of the conductance occurs through the Fermi-arc surface states, and it rises in steps of one quantum of conductance as a function of the chemical potential; furthermore, with varying flux the conductance changes in steps of one quantum of conductance with characteristic Fabry-Pérot interfer…
Weyl semimetals are new states of matter which feature novel Fermi arcs and exotic transport phenomena. Based on first-principles calculations, we report that the chalcopyrites CuTlSe2, AgTlTe2, AuTlTe2 and ZnPbAs2 are ideal Weyl semimetals, having largely separated Weyl points (~ 0.05/A) and uncovered Fermi arcs that are amenable to experimental detections. We also construct a minimal effective model to capture the low-energy physics of this class of Weyl semimetals. Our discovery is a major step toward a perfect playground of intriguing Weyl semimetals and potential applications for low-powe…
