By using \emph{ab initio} calculations and symmetry analysis, we define a new class of Weyl phonons, i.e., isolated Weyl phonons (IWPs), which are characterized by Chern number $\pm$2 or $\pm$4 in their acoustic phononic spectra and protected by the time inversion symmetry and point group symmetries. More importantly, their particular topological feature make them circumvent from the no-go theorem. Some high-symmetry points, behaving as isolated Weyl points in the space groups (SGs) of the related phononic systems, tend to form IWPs. As enumerated in Table I, the IWPs are located at the center of three-dimensional Brillouin zone (BZ), and protected by the time-reversal symmetry ($\cal T$) and the corresponding point group symmetries. Moreover, a realistic chiral crystal material example of K$_2$Mg$_2$O$_3$ in SG 96, a monopole IWP with Chern number -2 is found at the high-symmetry point $Γ$, and in another material example of Nb$_3$Al$_2$N in SG 213, a monopole IWP with Chern number +4 is confirmed at the point $Γ$. It is interesting that that IWPs can not form the surface arcs in the surface BZ, which has not been reported in the phononic systems to present. Our theoretical results not only uncover a new class of Weyl phonons (IWPs), but also put forwards an effective way to search the IWPs in spinless systems.
Weyl semimetals exhibitinging the topologically nontrivial touching points in electronic band dispersion of solids pave the wave way to novel electronic devices and functionalities. Here, we demonstrate the signature of topologically nontrivial Weyl points (WPs) in phonon dispersion of solids through a first-principles investigations. ofT noncentrosymmetric wurtzite CuI (cuprous iodide at high temperature). These type-II phononic WP in phonon dispersion of wurtzite CuI is manifested in noncentrosymmetric wurtzite CuI by six pairs of the nontrivial touching points in the k_z=0.0 plane. The idea…
We derive the phonon dynamics of magnetic metals in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. We show that both a dissipationless viscosity and a dissipative viscosity arise in the dynamics. While the dissipationless viscosity splits the dispersion of left-handed and right-handed circularly polarized phonons, the dissipative viscosity damps them differently, inducing circular phonon dichroism. The effect offers a new degree of manipulation of phonons, i.e., the control of the phonon polarization. We investigate the effect in Weyl semimetals. We find that there exists strong circular phonon d…
We theoretically study the modification of the energy spectrum of long-wavelength acoustic phonons due to the electron-phonon interaction in a three-dimensional topological Weyl semimetal under the influence of quantizing magnetic fields. We find that the dispersion and attenuation of phonons show striking oscillatory behaviors as varying the magnetic field at low temperatures. These oscillations are distinct when the Fermi energy is in different energy regimes. Moreover, the van Hove singularity of the Weyl spectrum can manifest as a transition between different oscillation patterns when incr…
The phonon magnetochiral effect consists of a nonreciprocity in the velocity or attenuation of acoustic waves when they propagate parallel and antiparallel to an external magnetic field. The first experimental observation of this effect has been reported recently in a chiral magnet and ascribed to the hybridization between acoustic phonons and chiral magnons. Here, we predict a potentially measurable phonon magnetochiral effect of electronic origin in chiral Weyl semimetals. Caused by the Berry curvature and the orbital magnetic moment, this effect is enhanced for longitudinal phonons by the c…
Ideal Weyl points, which are related by symmetry and thus reside at the same frequency, could promote the deep development and utilization of the Weyl physics. Although the ideal type-I Weyl points have been achieved in photonic crystals, the ideal type-II Weyl points with tilted cone-like band dispersions, are still beyond discovery. Here we realize ideal type-II Weyl points of minimal number in three-dimensional layer-stacked phononic crystals, and demonstrate topological phase transition from Weyl semimetal to valley insulators of two distinct types. The Fermi-arc surface states exist on th…
Weyl semimetals harbor topological Fermi-arc surface states which determine the nontrivial charge current response to external fields. We here study the quasiparticle decay rate of Fermi arc states arising from their coupling to acoustic phonons, as well as the phonon-limited conductivity tensor for a clean Weyl semimetal slab. Using the phonon modes for an isotropic elastic continuum with a deformation potential coupling to electrons, we determine the temperature dependence of the quasiparticle decay rate, both near and far away from the arc termination points. By solving the coupled Boltzman…
Weyl points are often believed to appear in pairs with opposite chirality. In this work, we show by first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis that single Weyl phonons with linear dispersion and double Weyl phonons with quadratic dispersion are simultaneously present between two specific phonon branches in realistic materials with trigonal or hexagonal lattices. These phonon Weyl points are guaranteed to locate at high-symmetry points due to the screw rotational symmetry, forming a unique triangular Weyl complex. In sharp contrast to conventional Weyl systems with surface arcs termina…
The discovery of Weyl semimetals opens the door for searching topological semimetals in physical science. The Weyl points are generally recognized as conventional, quadratic, spin-1, and those of high topological charges. Here we report the observation of the quadruple Weyl point of charge 4, the highest topological charge a twofold degenerate node can carry. Besides the quadruple Weyl point, the phononic semimetal also hosts conventional, quadratic, and spin-1 Weyl points, which stands as a system with yet the richest types of Weyl points. The quadruple-helicoid surface states, specific to th…
Nontrivial low-energy excitations of crystalline solids have insightfully strengthened understanding of elementary particles in quantum field theory. Usually, topological quasiparticles are mainly focused on fermions in topological semimetals. In this work, we alternatively show by first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis that ideal type-II Weyl phonons are present in zinc-blende cadmium telluride (CdTe), a well-known II-VI semiconductor. Importantly, these type-II Weyl phonons originate from the inversion between the longitudinal acoustic and transverse optical branches. Symmetry g…
We study longitudinal magnetotransport in disorder-free cylindrical Weyl semimetal nanowires. Our theory includes a magnetic flux $Φ$ piercing the nanowire and captures the finite curvature of the Fermi arc in the surface Brillouin zone through a boundary angle $α$. Electron backscattering by acoustic phonons via the deformation potential causes a finite resistivity which we evaluate by means of the semiclassical Boltzmann approach. We find that low-energy transport is dominated by surface states, where transport observables are highly sensitive to the angle $α$ and to Aharonov-Bohm phases due…
By means of first-principles calculations and modeling analysis, we have predicted that the traditional 2D-graphene hosts the topological phononic Weyl-like points (PWs) and phononic nodal line (PNL) in its phonon spectrum. The phonon dispersion of graphene hosts three type-I PWs (both PW1 and PW2 at the BZ corners \emph{K} and \emph{K}', and PW3 locating along the $Γ$-\emph{K} line), one type-II PW4 locating along the $Γ$-\emph{M} line, and one PNL surrounding the centered $Γ$ point in the $q_{x,y}$ plane. The calculations further reveal that Berry curvatures are vanishingly zero throughout t…
Unconventional Weyl phonons with higher topological charges in crystalline solids have attracted increasing attention. By symmetry analysis and low-energy $k.p$ effective Hamiltonian, we propose the symmetry enforced triple hourglass Weyl phonons (THWPs) with Chern number $\mathcal C$ = $\pm$ 3 protected by $6_3$ screw rotation symmetry in chiral space groups 173 ($P6_3$) and 182 ($P6_322$). We take LiIO$_3$ with space group 173 as a candidate and confirm that it possesses THWP with linear and quadratic dispersions along the $k_z$ direction and in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane, respectively. Due to th…
Weyl semimetals are 3D phases of matter with topologically protected states that have remarkable macroscopic transport behaviors. As phonon dynamics and electron-phonon scattering play a critical role in the electrical and thermal transport, we pursue a fundamental understanding of the origin of these effects in type-I Weyl semimetals NbAs and TaAs. In the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of NbAs, we reveal a previously unreported Fano lineshape, a signature stemming from the electron-phonon interaction. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the $A_{1}$ phonon linewidths in both NbAs …
Spin-1 Weyl point is formed by three bands touching at a single point in the three dimensional (3D) momentum space, with two of which show cone-like dispersion while the third band is flat. Such a triply degenerate point carries higher topological charge $\pm2$2 and can be described by a three-band Hamiltonian. We first propose a tight-binding model of a 3D Lieb lattice with chiral interlayer coupling to form the Spin-1 Weyl point. Then we design a chiral phononic crystal that carries these spin-1 Weyl points and special straight-type acoustic Fermi arcs. We also computationally demonstrate th…

Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On the other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibi…
Weyl semimetals display unusual electronic transport properties when placed under magnetic fields. Here, we investigate how magnetic fields alter the dynamics of long wavelength lattice vibrations in these materials. To that end, we develop a theory for the phonon dispersion, which incorporates contributions from chiral and nonchiral Landau levels, electron-phonon interactions, electron-electron interactions, and disorder. We predict (i) a magnetic-field-induced hybridization between optical phonons and plasmons, (ii) avoided crossings between pseudoscalar optical phonons and electronic excita…
We show that, as it happens in graphene, elastic deformations couple to the electronic degrees of freedom as pseudo gauge fields in Weyl semimetals. We derive the form of the elastic gauge fields in a tight-binding model hosting Weyl nodes and see that this vector electron-phonon coupling is chiral, providing an example of axial gauge fields in three dimensions. As an example of the new response functions that arise associated to these elastic gauge fields, we derive a non-zero phonon Hall viscosity for the neutral system at zero temperature. The axial nature of the fields provides a test of t…
Weyl points (WPs) are isolated degeneracies carrying quantized topological charges, and are therefore robust against Hermitian perturbations. WPs are predicted to spread to the Weyl exceptional rings (WERs) in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Here, we use a one-dimensional (1D) Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) model to construct a Weyl semimetal in a 3D parameter space comprised of one reciprocal dimension and two synthetic dimensions. The inclusion of non-Hermiticity in the form of gain and loss produces a WER. The topology of the WER is characterized by both its topological charge and non-Hermitian …
We generalize the notion of dissipationless, topological Hall viscosity tensor to optical phonons in thin film Weyl semimetals. By using the strained Porphyrin thin film Weyl semimetal as a model example, we show how optical phonons can couple to Weyl electrons as chiral pseudo gauge fields. These chiral vector fields lead to a novel dissipationless two-rank viscosity tensor in the effective dynamics of optical phonons whose origin is the chiral anomaly. We also compute the contribution to this two rank Hall viscosity tensor due to the presence of an external magnetic field, whose origin is th…

Discovery and observations of exotic, quantized optical and electrical responses have sparked renewed interest in nonmagnetic chiral crystals. Within this class of materials, six group V transition metal ditetrelides, that is, XY$_2$ (X = V, Nb, Ta and Y = Si, Ge), host composite Weyl nodes on high-symmetry lines, with Kramers-Weyl fermions at time-reversal invariant momenta. In addition, at least two of these materials, NbGe$_2$ and NbSi$_2$, exhibit superconducting transitions at low temperatures. The interplay of strong electron-phonon interaction and complex Fermi surface topology present …
Topological semimetals have revealed a wide array of novel transport phenomena, including electron hydrodynamics, quantum field theoretic anomalies, and extreme magnetoresistances and mobilities. However, the scattering mechanisms central to these behaviors remain largely unexplored. Here we reveal signatures of significant phonon-electron scattering in the type-II Weyl semimetal WP$_{2}$ via temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy. Over a large temperature range, we find that the decay rates of the lowest energy $A_{1}$ modes are dominated by phonon-electron rather than phonon-phonon scatter…
A van der Waals coupled Weyl semimetal material NbIrTe4 is investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first principles calculations. We observe a sharp peak in the tunneling conductance near the zero bias energy, and its origin is ascribed to a van Hove singularity associated with a Lifshitz transition of the topologically none trivial Fermi arc states. Furthermore, tunneling spectroscopy measurements show a surprisingly large signature of electron boson coupling, which presumably represents anomalously enhanced electron phonon coupling through the enhanced charge…
We carried out point contact (PC) investigation of WTe2 single crystals. We measured Yanson d2V/dI2 PC spectra of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in WTe2. The spectra demonstrate a main phonon peak around 8 meV and a shallow second maximum near 16 meV. Their position is in line with the calculation of the EPI spectra of WTe2 in the literature, albeit phonons with higher energy are not resolved in our PC spectra. An additional contribution to the spectra is present above the phonon energy, what may be connected with the peculiar electronic band structure and need to be clarified. We detec…

We study the single-particle spectrum of three-dimensional Weyl semimetals taking into account electron-phonon interactions that are the result of straining the material. We find that a well-defined fermionic excitation appears in addition to the standard peak corresponding to quasiparticle states as suggested by Landau-Fermi liquid theory. Contrary to the case of Dirac systems interacting via the Coulomb interaction, these satellite peaks appear even at lowest order in perturbation theory. The new excitations are anisotropic, as opposed to the single-particle spectrum, and their behavior is d…
The electron-phonon interaction (EPI) is instrumental in a wide variety of phenomena in solid-state physics, such as electrical resistivity in metals, carrier mobility, optical transition and polaron effects in semiconductors, lifetime of hot carriers, transition temperature in BCS superconductors, and even spin relaxation in diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers for quantum information processing. However, due to the weak EPI strength, most phenomena have focused on electronic properties rather than on phonon properties. One prominent exception is the Kohn anomaly, where phonon softening can emerg…
In this paper, the chiral Hall effect of strained Weyl semimetals without any external magnetic field is proposed. Electron-phonon coupling emerges in the low-energy fermionic sector through a pseudogauge potential. We show that, by using chiral kinetic theory, the chiral Hall effect appears as a response to a real time-varying electric field in the presence of structural distortion and it causes spatial chirality and charges separation in a Weyl system. We also show that the coupling of the electrons to acoustic phonons as a gapless excitation leads to emerging an optical absorption peak at $…
Phonons are an ideal platform for realizing stable spinless two-dimensional (2D) Dirac points because they have a bosonic nature and hard-to-break time-reversal symmetry. It should be noted that the twofold degenerate nodal points in the phonon dispersions of almost all reported 2D materials are misclassified as 'Dirac points' owing to a historical issue. The correct name for these twofold degenerate nodal points should be 'Weyl' because 2D phononic systems are essentially spinless and because each twofold degenerate point is described by a Weyl model in two dimensions. To date, there have bee…
Weyl points emerge as topological monopoles of Berry flux in the three-dimensional (3D) momentum space and have been extensively studied in topological semimetals. As the underlying topological principles apply to any type of waves under periodic boundary conditions, Weyl points can also be realized in classical wave systems, which are easier to engineer compared to condensed matter materials. Here, we made an acoustic Weyl phononic crystal by breaking space inversion (P) symmetry using a combination of slanted acoustic waveguides. We conducted angle-resolved transmission measurements to chara…
The discovery of topological quantum states marks a new chapter in both condensed matter physics and materials sciences. By analogy to spin electronic system, topological concepts have been extended into phonons, boosting the birth of topological phononics (TPs). Here, we present a high-throughput screening and data-driven approach to compute and evaluate TPs among over 10,000 materials. We have clarified 5014 TP materials and classified them into single Weyl, high degenerate Weyl, and nodal-line (ring) TPs. Among them, three representative cases of TPs have been discussed in detail. Furthermo…
It has been shown that coherent phonons can be used as a potent tool for controlling and enhancing optoelectronic and transport properties of nanostructured materials. Recent studies revealed that interaction of acoustic phonons and fast-moving carriers in semiconductor heterostructures can be accompanied by electron-phonon instabilities that cause ordinary and induced Cherenkov effects. However, the development of such instabilities is still poorly understood. Our study shows that other supersonic phenomena, beyond the Cherenkov instability, are possible for non-equilibrium charge transport i…
Thermodynamic stability and vibrational anharmonicity of single layer black phosphorene (SLBP) are studied using a spectral energy density (SED) method. Thermal stability of SLBP sheet is analyzed by computing phonon dispersion at 300 K, which shows that SLBP sheet is dynamically stable at finite temperature and survives the crumpling transition. Temperature evolution of all zone center optic phonon modes are extracted, including experimentally forbidden IR and Raman active modes. Mode resolved phonon frequencies of optic modes shows significant deviation from quasi-harmonic prediction, which …
The phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) has been widely utilized to study thermal transport in solids. While for a number of materials the exact solution to the BTE has been obtained for a uniform heat flow, problems arising in micro/nanoscale heat transport have been analyzed within the relaxation time approximation (RTA). Since the RTA breaks down at temperatures low compared to the Debye temperature, this approximation prevents the study of an important class of high Debye temperature materials such as diamond, graphite, graphene and some other 2D materials. We present a full scatteri…
Landau-level spectroscopy, the optical analysis of electrons in materials subject to a strong magnetic field, is a versatile probe of the electronic band structure and has been successfully used in the identification of novel states of matter such as Dirac electrons, topological materials or Weyl semimetals. The latter arise from a complex interplay between crystal symmetry, spin-orbit interaction and inverse ordering of electronic bands. Here, we report on unusual Landau-level transitions in the monopnictide TaP that decrease in energy with increasing magnetic field. We show that these transi…
Topological semimetal, hosting spin-1 Weyl point beyond Dirac and Weyl points, has attracted a great deal of attention. However, the spin-1 Weyl semimetal, which possesses exclusively the spin-1 Weyl points in a clean frequency window, without shadowed by any other nodal points, is yet to be discovered. Here, we report for the first time a spin-1 Weyl semimetal in a phononic crystal. Its spin-1 Weyl points, touched by two linear dispersions and an additional flat band, carry monopole charges (-2,0,2) or (2,0,-2) for the three bands from bottom to top, and result in double Fermi arcs existing b…
Migdal's theorem plays a central role in the physics of electron-phonon interactions in metals and semiconductors, and has been extensively studied theoretically for parabolic band electronic systems in three-, two-, and one-dimensional systems over the last fifty years. In the current work, we theoretically study the relevance of Migdal's theorem in graphene and Weyl semimetals which are examples of 2D and 3D Dirac materials, respectively, with linear and chiral band dispersion. Our work also applies to 2D and 3D topological insulator systems. In Fermi liquids, the renormalization of the elec…
We study the energy levels of Dirac-Weyl fermions in graphene subject to a magnetic field with Rashba contribution in the minimal length situation. The exact solution for the energy dispersion of Dirac-like charge carriers coupled to the magnetic moments in a (2+1)-dimension is obtained by the use of the momentum space representation. Moreover, as it comes to applications for 2D Dirac-like quasiparticles, we also extend our theory and results in some special cases, showing that the emerging energy spectrum at the high magnetic field limit becomes independent of the Rashba coupling, $λ_{R}$, an…
We study the excitonic dynamics of a driven quantum dot under the influence of a phonon environment, going beyond the weak exciton-phonon coupling approximation. By combining the polaron transform and time-local projection operator techniques we develop a master equation that can be valid over a much larger range of exciton-phonon coupling strengths and temperatures than the standard weak-coupling approach. For the experimentally relevant parameters considered here, we find that the weak-coupling and polaron theories give very similar predictions for low temperatures (below 30 K), while at hig…
In quantum field theory, we learn that fermions come in three varieties: Majorana, Weyl, and Dirac. Here we show that in solid state systems this classification is incomplete and find several additional types of crystal symmetry-protected free fermionic excitations . We exhaustively classify linear and quadratic 3-, 6- and 8- band crossings stabilized by space group symmetries in solid state systems with spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal symmetry. Several distinct types of fermions arise, differentiated by their degeneracies at and along high symmetry points, lines, and surfaces. Some nota…
The form of energy termed heat that typically derives from lattice vibrations, i.e. the phonons, is usually considered as waste energy and, moreover, deleterious to information processing. However, with this colloquium, we attempt to rebut this common view: By use of tailored models we demonstrate that phonons can be manipulated like electrons and photons can, thus enabling controlled heat transport. Moreover, we explain that phonons can be put to beneficial use to carry and process information. In a first part we present ways to control heat transport and how to process information for physic…
We study the effective symmetry profiles of superconducting pair correlations and the flow of charge supercurrent in ballistic Weyl semimetal systems with a tilted dispersion relation. Utilizing a microscopic method in the ballistic regime and starting from both opposite-pseudospin and equal-pseudospin phonon-mediated opposite-spin electron-electron couplings, we calculate the anomalous Green's function to study various superconducting pair correlations that Weyl semimetal systems may develop. The momentum-space profile reveals that by properly manipulating the parameters of Weyl semimetal sys…
Soft materials can self-assemble into highly structured phases which replicate at the mesoscopic scale the symmetry of atomic crystals. As such, they offer an unparalleled platform to design mesostructured materials for light and sound. Here, we present a bottom-up approach based on self-assembly to engineer three-dimensional photonic and phononic crystals with topologically protected Weyl points. In addition to angular and frequency selectivity of their bulk optical response, Weyl materials are endowed with topological surface states, which allows for the existence of one-way channels even in…
