While there is a large body of research studying deep learning methods for text generation from structured data, almost all of it focuses purely on English. In this paper, we study the effectiveness of machine translation based pre-training for data-to-text generation in non-English languages. Since the structured data is generally expressed in English, text generation into other languages involves elements of translation, transliteration and copying - elements already encoded in neural machine translation systems. Moreover, since data-to-text corpora are typically small, this task can benefit greatly from pre-training. Based on our experiments on Czech, a morphologically complex language, we find that pre-training lets us train end-to-end models with significantly improved performance, as judged by automatic metrics and human evaluation. We also show that this approach enjoys several desirable properties, including improved performance in low data scenarios and robustness to unseen slot values.
We present Charles University submissions to the WMT22 General Translation Shared Task on Czech-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Czech machine translation. We present two constrained submissions based on block back-translation and tagged back-translation and experiment with rule-based romanization of Ukrainian. Our results show that the romanization only has a minor effect on the translation quality. Further, we describe Charles Translator, a system that was developed in March 2022 as a response to the migration from Ukraine to the Czech Republic. Compared to our constrained systems, it did not use the…
Reading comprehension is a well studied task, with huge training datasets in English. This work focuses on building reading comprehension systems for Czech, without requiring any manually annotated Czech training data. First of all, we automatically translated SQuAD 1.1 and SQuAD 2.0 datasets to Czech to create training and development data, which we release at http://hdl.handle.net/11234/1-3249. We then trained and evaluated several BERT and XLM-RoBERTa baseline models. However, our main focus lies in cross-lingual transfer models. We report that a XLM-RoBERTa model trained on English data an…
Interpreters facilitate multi-lingual meetings but the affordable set of languages is often smaller than what is needed. Automatic simultaneous speech translation can extend the set of provided languages. We investigate if such an automatic system should rather follow the original speaker, or an interpreter to achieve better translation quality at the cost of increased delay. To answer the question, we release Europarl Simultaneous Interpreting Corpus (ESIC), 10 hours of recordings and transcripts of European Parliament speeches in English, with simultaneous interpreting into Czech and German.…
Lexically constrained machine translation allows the user to manipulate the output sentence by enforcing the presence or absence of certain words and phrases. Although current approaches can enforce terms to appear in the translation, they often struggle to make the constraint word form agree with the rest of the generated output. Our manual analysis shows that 46% of the errors in the output of a baseline constrained model for English to Czech translation are related to agreement. We investigate mechanisms to allow neural machine translation to infer the correct word inflection given lemmatiz…

We frame the task of machine translation evaluation as one of scoring machine translation output with a sequence-to-sequence paraphraser, conditioned on a human reference. We propose training the paraphraser as a multilingual NMT system, treating paraphrasing as a zero-shot translation task (e.g., Czech to Czech). This results in the paraphraser's output mode being centered around a copy of the input sequence, which represents the best case scenario where the MT system output matches a human reference. Our method is simple and intuitive, and does not require human judgements for training. Our …
The foundation for the research of summarization in the Czech language was laid by the work of Straka et al. (2018). They published the SumeCzech, a large Czech news-based summarization dataset, and proposed several baseline approaches. However, it is clear from the achieved results that there is a large space for improvement. In our work, we focus on the impact of named entities on the summarization of Czech news articles. First, we annotate SumeCzech with named entities. We propose a new metric ROUGE_NE that measures the overlap of named entities between the true and generated summaries, and…
We present the Eyetracked Multi-Modal Translation (EMMT) corpus, a dataset containing monocular eye movement recordings, audio and 4-electrode electroencephalogram (EEG) data of 43 participants. The objective was to collect cognitive signals as responses of participants engaged in a number of language intensive tasks involving different text-image stimuli settings when translating from English to Czech. Each participant was exposed to 32 text-image stimuli pairs and asked to (1) read the English sentence, (2) translate it into Czech, (3) consult the image, (4) translate again, either updating …

This paper presents a description of CUNI systems submitted to the WMT20 task on unsupervised and very low-resource supervised machine translation between German and Upper Sorbian. We experimented with training on synthetic data and pre-training on a related language pair. In the fully unsupervised scenario, we achieved 25.5 and 23.7 BLEU translating from and into Upper Sorbian, respectively. Our low-resource systems relied on transfer learning from German-Czech parallel data and achieved 57.4 BLEU and 56.1 BLEU, which is an improvement of 10 BLEU points over the baseline trained only on the a…

We present a simple and effective approach to incorporating syntactic structure into neural attention-based encoder-decoder models for machine translation. We rely on graph-convolutional networks (GCNs), a recent class of neural networks developed for modeling graph-structured data. Our GCNs use predicted syntactic dependency trees of source sentences to produce representations of words (i.e. hidden states of the encoder) that are sensitive to their syntactic neighborhoods. GCNs take word representations as input and produce word representations as output, so they can easily be incorporated as…
We describe Facebook's multilingual model submission to the WMT2021 shared task on news translation. We participate in 14 language directions: English to and from Czech, German, Hausa, Icelandic, Japanese, Russian, and Chinese. To develop systems covering all these directions, we focus on multilingual models. We utilize data from all available sources --- WMT, large-scale data mining, and in-domain backtranslation --- to create high quality bilingual and multilingual baselines. Subsequently, we investigate strategies for scaling multilingual model size, such that one system has sufficient capa…

There are several approaches for improving neural machine translation for low-resource languages: Monolingual data can be exploited via pretraining or data augmentation; Parallel corpora on related language pairs can be used via parameter sharing or transfer learning in multilingual models; Subword segmentation and regularization techniques can be applied to ensure high coverage of the vocabulary. We review these approaches in the context of an asymmetric-resource one-to-many translation task, in which the pair of target languages are related, with one being a very low-resource and the other a…

We present RobeCzech, a monolingual RoBERTa language representation model trained on Czech data. RoBERTa is a robustly optimized Transformer-based pretraining approach. We show that RobeCzech considerably outperforms equally-sized multilingual and Czech-trained contextualized language representation models, surpasses current state of the art in all five evaluated NLP tasks and reaches state-of-the-art results in four of them. The RobeCzech model is released publicly at https://hdl.handle.net/11234/1-3691 and https://huggingface.co/ufal/robeczech-base.
In this paper, we present our progress in pre-training monolingual Transformers for Czech and contribute to the research community by releasing our models for public. The need for such models emerged from our effort to employ Transformers in our language-specific tasks, but we found the performance of the published multilingual models to be very limited. Since the multilingual models are usually pre-trained from 100+ languages, most of low-resourced languages (including Czech) are under-represented in these models. At the same time, there is a huge amount of monolingual training data available…

This paper describes the training process of the first Czech monolingual language representation models based on BERT and ALBERT architectures. We pre-train our models on more than 340K of sentences, which is 50 times more than multilingual models that include Czech data. We outperform the multilingual models on 9 out of 11 datasets. In addition, we establish the new state-of-the-art results on nine datasets. At the end, we discuss properties of monolingual and multilingual models based upon our results. We publish all the pre-trained and fine-tuned models freely for the research community.
Contextualized embeddings, which capture appropriate word meaning depending on context, have recently been proposed. We evaluate two meth ods for precomputing such embeddings, BERT and Flair, on four Czech text processing tasks: part-of-speech (POS) tagging, lemmatization, dependency pars ing and named entity recognition (NER). The first three tasks, POS tagging, lemmatization and dependency parsing, are evaluated on two corpora: the Prague Dependency Treebank 3.5 and the Universal Dependencies 2.3. The named entity recognition (NER) is evaluated on the Czech Named Entity Corpus 1.1 and 2.0. W…
Label smoothing is ubiquitously applied in Neural Machine Translation (NMT) training. While label smoothing offers a desired regularization effect during model training, in this paper we demonstrate that it nevertheless introduces length biases in the beam search decoding procedure. Our analysis shows that label smoothing implicitly applies a length penalty term to output sequence, causing a bias towards shorter translations. We also show that for a model fully optimized with label smoothing, translation length is implicitly upper bounded by a fixed constant independent of input. We verify our…
This paper presents Adam Mickiewicz University's (AMU) submissions to the constrained track of the WMT 2022 General MT Task. We participated in the Ukrainian $\leftrightarrow$ Czech translation directions. The systems are a weighted ensemble of four models based on the Transformer (big) architecture. The models use source factors to utilize the information about named entities present in the input. Each of the models in the ensemble was trained using only the data provided by the shared task organizers. A noisy back-translation technique was used to augment the training corpora. One of the mod…
In this paper, we introduce a new Czech subjectivity dataset of 10k manually annotated subjective and objective sentences from movie reviews and descriptions. Our prime motivation is to provide a reliable dataset that can be used with the existing English dataset as a benchmark to test the ability of pre-trained multilingual models to transfer knowledge between Czech and English and vice versa. Two annotators annotated the dataset reaching 0.83 of the Cohen's \k{appa} inter-annotator agreement. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first subjectivity dataset for the Czech language. We also…

In most of neural machine translation distillation or stealing scenarios, the goal is to preserve the performance of the target model (teacher). The highest-scoring hypothesis of the teacher model is commonly used to train a new model (student). If reference translations are also available, then better hypotheses (with respect to the references) can be upsampled and poor hypotheses either removed or undersampled. This paper explores the importance sampling method landscape (pruning, hypothesis upsampling and undersampling, deduplication and their combination) with English to Czech and English …
