The notion of weak saturation was introduced by Bollobás in 1968. Let $F$ and $H$ be graphs. A spanning subgraph $G \subseteq F$ is weakly $(F,H)$-saturated if it contains no copy of $H$ but there exists an ordering $e_1,\ldots,e_t$ of $E(F)\setminus E(G)$ such that for each $i \in [t]$, the graph $G \cup \{e_1,\ldots,e_i\}$ contains a copy $H'$ of $H$ such that $e_i \in H'$. Define $wsat(F,H)$ to be the minimum number of edges in a weakly $(F,H)$-saturated graph. In this paper, we prove for all $t \ge 2$ and $n \ge 3t-3$, that $wsat(K_n,K_{t,t}) = (t-1)(n + 1 - t/2)$, and we determine the value of $wsat(K_n,K_{t-1,t})$ as well. For fixed $2 \le s < t$, we also obtain bounds on $wsat(K_n,K_{s,t})$ that are asymptotically tight.
The Hadwiger number $h(G)$ is the order of the largest complete minor in $G$. Does sufficient Hadwiger number imply a minor with additional properties? In [2], Geelen et al showed $h(G)\geq (1+o(1))ct\sqrt{\ln t}$ implies $G$ has a bipartite subgraph with Hadwiger number at least $t$, for some explicit $c\sim 1.276\dotsc$. We improve this to $h(G) \geq (1+o(1))t\sqrt{\log_2 t}$, and provide a construction showing this is tight. We also derive improved bounds for the topological minor variant of this problem.
A graph $G$ contains $H$ as an \emph{immersion} if there is an injective mapping $ϕ: V(H)\rightarrow V(G)$ such that for each edge $uv\in E(H)$, there is a path $P_{uv}$ in $G$ joining vertices $ϕ(u)$ and $ϕ(v)$, and all the paths $P_{uv}$, $uv\in E(H)$, are pairwise edge-disjoint. An analogue of Hadwiger's conjecture for the clique immersions by Lescure and Meyniel, and independently by Abu-Khzam and Langston, states that every graph $G$ contains $K_{χ(G)}$ as an immersion. We prove that for any constant $\varepsilon>0$ and integers $s,t\ge2$, there exists $d_0=d_0(\varepsilon,s,t)$ such that…
The notion of the circular coloring of signed graphs is a recent one that simultaneously extends both notions of the circular coloring of graphs and $0$-free coloring of signed graphs. A circular $r$-coloring of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ is to assign points of a circle of circumference $r$, $r\geq 2$, to the vertices of $G$ such that vertices connected by a positive edge are at circular distance at least $1$ and vertices connected by a negative edge are at circular distance at most $\frac{r}{2}-1$. The infimum of all $r$ for which $(G, σ)$ admits a circular $r$-coloring is said to be the circula…
A graph $G$ is $F$-saturated if it does not contain any copy of $F$, but the addition of any missing edge in $G$ creates at least one copy of $F$. Inspired by work of Alon and Shikhelman regarding a similar question for $F$-free graphs, Kritschgau, Methuku, Tait, and Timmons introduced the parameter of $\text{sat}_H(n,F)$ to denote the minimum number of copies of some subgraph $H$ in an $F$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we address this generalized saturation problem with special focus on $\text{sat}_{K_r}(n,S_t)$ and $\text{sat}_{S_r}(n,S_t)$ This relates to recent work by Ch…
The class of bipartite permutation graphs enjoys many nice and important properties. In particular, this class is critically important in the study of clique- and rank-width of graphs, because it is one of the minimal hereditary classes of graphs of unbounded clique- and rank-width. It also contains a number of important subclasses, which are critical with respect to other parameters, such as graph lettericity or shrub-depth, and with respect to other notions, such as well-quasi-ordering or complexity of algorithmic problems. In the present paper we identify critical subclasses of bipartite pe…
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph, and let $H$ be a bipartite graph with a fixed bipartition $(B_H,W_H)$. We consider three different, natural ways of forbidding $H$ as an induced subgraph in $G$. First, $G$ is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. Second, $G$ is strongly $H$-free if $G$ is $H$-free or else has no bipartition $(B_G,W_G)$ with $B_H\subseteq B_G$ and $W_H\subseteq W_G$. Third, $G$ is weakly $H$-free if $G$ is $H$-free or else has at least one bipartition $(B_G,W_G)$ with $B_H\not\subseteq B_G$ or $W_H\not\subseteq W_G$. Lozin and Volz characterized all bipartite…
In this paper we obtain some upper bounds for $b$-chromatic number of $K_{1,t}$ -free graphs, graphs with given minimum clique partition and bipartite graphs. These bounds are in terms of either clique number or chromatic number of graphs or biclique number for bipartite graphs. We show that all the bounds are tight.
It takes $n^2/4$ cliques to cover all the edges of a complete bipartite graph $K_{n/2,n/2}$, but how many cliques does it take to cover all the edges of a graph $G$ if $G$ has no $K_{t,t}$ induced subgraph? We prove that $O(|G|^{2-1/(2t)})$ cliques suffice; and also prove that, even for graphs with no stable set of size four, we may need more than linearly many cliques. This settles two questions discussed at a recent conference in Lyon.
We study the polyhedral properties of three problems of constructing an optimal complete bipartite subgraph (a biclique) in a bipartite graph. In the first problem we consider a balanced biclique with the same number of vertices in both parts and arbitrary edge weights. In the other two problems we are dealing with unbalanced subgraphs of maximum and minimum weight with nonnegative edges. All three problems are established to be NP-hard. We study the polytopes and the cone decompositions of these problems and their 1-skeletons. We describe the adjacency criterion in 1-skeleton of the polytope …
Eternal and m-eternal domination are concerned with using mobile guards to protect a graph against infinite sequences of attacks at vertices. Eternal domination allows one guard to move per attack, whereas more than one guard may move per attack in the m-eternal domination model. Inequality chains consisting of the domination, eternal domination, m-eternal domination, independence, and clique covering numbers of graph are explored in this paper. Among other results, we characterize bipartite and triangle-free graphs with domination and eternal domination numbers equal to two, trees with equal …
We introduce a notion of rainbow saturation and the corresponding rainbow saturation number. This is the saturation version of the rainbow Turán numbers whose systematic study was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov, and Verstraëte. We give examples of graphs for which the rainbow saturation number is bounded away from the ordinary saturation number. This includes all complete graphs $K_n$ for $n\geq 4$, and several bipartite graphs. It is notable that there are non-bipartite graphs for which this is the case, as this does not happen when it comes to the rainbow extremal number versus the tr…

We prove that consistently every bipartite graph of size $κ^+\timesκ^+$ contains either a clique or an independent subset of size $τ\timesτ$ for every $τ\inκ^+$, where $κ$ is a successor cardinal.
The theory of dense graph limits comes with a natural sampling process which yields an inhomogeneous variant G(n,W) of the Erdos-Renyi random graph. Here we study the clique number of these random graphs. We establish the concentration of the clique number of G(n,W) for each fixed n, and give examples of graphons for which G(n,W) exhibits wild long-term behavior. Our main result is an asymptotic formula which gives the almost sure clique number of these random graphs. We obtain a similar result for the bipartite version of the problem. We also make an observation that might be of independent i…
The paper studies wsat$(G,H)$ which is the minimum number of edges in a weakly $H$-saturated subgraph of $G$. We prove that wsat$(K_n,H)$ is `stable' - remains the same after independent removal of every edge of $K_n$ with constant probability - for all pattern graphs $H$ such that there exists a `local' set of edges percolating in $K_n$. This is true, for example, for cliques and complete bipartite graphs. We also find a threshold probability for the weak $K_{1,t}$-saturation stability.
A complete graph is the graph in which every two vertices are adjacent. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, the complete width of $G$ is the minimum $k$ such that there exist $k$ independent sets $\mathtt{N}_i\subseteq V$, $1\le i\le k$, such that the graph $G'$ obtained from $G$ by adding some new edges between certain vertices inside the sets $\mathtt{N}_i$, $1\le i\le k$, is a complete graph. The complete width problem is to decide whether the complete width of a given graph is at most $k$ or not. In this paper we study the complete width problem. We show that the complete width problem is NP-complete o…

For a graph $G$, let $cp(G)$ denote the minimum number of cliques of $G$ needed to cover the edges of $G$ exactly once. Similarly, let $bp_k(G)$ denote the minimum number of bicliques (i.e. complete bipartite subgraphs of $G$) needed to cover each edge of $G$ exactly $k$ times. We consider two conjectures -- one regarding the maximum possible value of $cp(G) + cp(\overline{G})$ (due to de Caen, Erdős, Pullman and Wormald) and the other regarding $bp_k(K_n)$ (due to de Caen, Gregory and Pritikin). We disprove the first, obtaining improved lower and upper bounds on $\max_G cp(G) + cp(\overline{G…

The Ramsey number $R_X(p,q)$ for a class of graphs $X$ is the minimum $n$ such that every graph in $X$ with at least $n$ vertices has either a clique of size $p$ or an independent set of size $q$. We say that Ramsey numbers are linear in $X$ if there is a constant $k$ such that $R_{X}(p,q) \leq k(p+q)$ for all $p,q$. In the present paper we conjecture that if $X$ is a hereditary class defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs, then Ramsey numbers are linear in $X$ if and only if $X$ excludes a forest, a disjoint union of cliques and their complements. We prove the "only if" part of …
The $t$-colored rainbow saturation number $rsat_t(n,F)$ is the minimum size of a $t$-edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices that contains no rainbow copy of $F$, but the addition of any missing edge in any color creates such a rainbow copy. Barrus, Ferrara, Vandenbussche and Wenger conjectured that $rsat_t(n,K_s) = Θ(n\log n)$ for every $s\ge 3$ and $t\ge \binom{s}{2}$. In this short note we prove the conjecture in a strong sense, asymptotically determining the rainbow saturation number for triangles. Our lower bound is probabilistic in spirit, the upper bound is based on the Shannon capacity of a…
Bicliques are complements of bipartite graphs; as such each consists of two cliques joined by a number of edges. In this paper we study algebraic aspects of the chromatic polynomials of these graphs. We derive a formula for the chromatic polynomial of an arbitrary biclique, and use this to give certain conditions under which two of the graphs have chromatic polynomials with the same splitting field. Finally, we use a subfamily of bicliques to prove the cubic case of the $α+n$ conjecture, by showing that for any cubic integer $α$, there is a natural number $n$ such that $α+n$ is a chromatic roo…
Let $q_{\min}(G)$ stand for the smallest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of a graph $G$ of order $n.$ This paper gives some results on the following extremal problem: How large can $q_\min\left( G\right) $ be if $G$ is a graph of order $n,$ with no complete subgraph of order $r+1?$ It is shown that this problem is related to the well-known topic of making graphs bipartite. Using known classical results, several bounds on $q_{\min}$ are obtained, thus extending previous work of Brandt for regular graphs. In addition, using graph blowups, a general asymptotic result about the maximum $q_{\m…
Graph $G$ is $F$-saturated if $G$ contains no copy of graph $F$ but any edge added to $G$ produces at least one copy of $F$. One common variant of saturation is to remove the former restriction: $G$ is $F$-semi-saturated if any edge added to $G$ produces at least one new copy of $F$. In this paper we take this idea one step further. Rather than just allowing edges of $G$ to be in a copy of $F$, we require it: $G$ is $F$-covered if every edge of $G$ is in a copy of $F$. It turns out that there is smooth interaction between coverage and semi-saturation, which opens for investigation a natural an…
In the way of proving Kneser's conjecture, László Lovász settled out a new lower bound for the chromatic number. He showed that if neighborhood complex $\mathcal{N}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is topologically $k$-connected, then its chromatic number is at least $k+3$. Then he completed his proof by showing that this bound is tight for the Kneser graph. However, there are some graphs where this bound is not useful at all, even comparing by the obvious bound; the clique number. For instance, if a graph contains no complete bipartite graph $\mathcal{K}_{l, m}$, then its Lovász's bound is at most $l+m-1$.…
A graph $H$ is $K_s$-saturated if it is a maximal $K_s$-free graph, i.e., $H$ contains no clique on $s$ vertices, but the addition of any missing edge creates one. The minimum number of edges in a $K_s$-saturated graph was determined over 50 years ago by Zykov and independently by Erdős, Hajnal and Moon. In this paper, we study the random analog of this problem: minimizing the number of edges in a maximal $K_s$-free subgraph of the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$. We give asymptotically tight estimates on this minimum, and also provide exact bounds for the related notion of weak saturation i…
The classical Hadwiger conjecture dating back to 1940's states that any graph of chromatic number at least $r$ has the clique of order $r$ as a minor. Hadwiger's conjecture is an example of a well studied class of problems asking how large a clique minor one can guarantee in a graph with certain restrictions. One problem of this type asks what is the largest size of a clique minor in a graph on $n$ vertices of independence number $α(G)$ at most $r$. If true Hadwiger's conjecture would imply the existence of a clique minor of order $n/α(G)$. Results of Kuhn and Osthus and Krivelevich and Sudako…
A graph $G$ is $H$-saturated for a graph $H$, if $G$ does not contain a copy of $H$ but adding any new edge to $G$ results in such a copy. An $H$-saturated graph on a given number of vertices always exists and the properties of such graphs, for example their highest density, have been studied intensively. A graph $G$ is $H$-induced-saturated if $G$ does not have an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$, but adding an edge to $G$ from its complement or deleting an edge from $G$ results in an induced copy of $H$. It is not immediate anymore that $H$-induced-saturated graphs exist. In fact, Martin a…
A hypergraph is said to be $1$-Sperner if for every two hyperedges the smallest of their two set differences is of size one. We present several applications of $1$-Sperner hypergraphs and their structure to graphs. In particular, we consider the classical characterizations of threshold and domishold graphs and use them to obtain further characterizations of these classes in terms of $1$-Spernerness, thresholdness, and $2$-asummability of their vertex cover, clique, dominating set, and closed neighborhood hypergraphs. Furthermore, we apply a decomposition property of $1$-Sperner hypergraphs to …
This paper considers two important questions in the well-studied theory of graphs that are $F$-saturated. A graph $G$ is called $F$-saturated if $G$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $F$, but the addition of any edge creates a copy of $F$. We first resolve a fundamental question of minimizing the number of cliques of size $r$ in a $K_s$-saturated graph for all sufficiently large numbers of vertices, confirming a conjecture of Kritschgau, Methuku, Tait, and Timmons. We also go further and prove a corresponding stability result. Next we minimize the number of cycles of length $r$ in a $K…
Our goal is to investigate a close relative of the independent transversal problem in the class of infinite $K_n$-free graphs: we show that for any infinite $K_n$-free graph $G=(V,E)$ and $m\in \mathbb N$ there is a minimal $r=r(G,m)$ such that for any balanced $r$-colouring of the vertices of $G$ one can find an independent set which meets at least $m$ colour classes in a set of size $|V|$. Answering a conjecture of S. Thomassé, we express the exact value of $r(H_n,m)$ (using Ramsey-numbers for finite digraphs), where $H_n$ is Henson's countable universal homogeneous $K_n$-free graph. In turn…
An ordered graph $G_<$ is a graph with a total ordering $<$ on its vertex set. A monotone path of length $k$ is a sequence of vertices $v_1<v_2<\ldots<v_k$ such that $v_iv_{j}$ is an edge of $G_<$ if and only if $|j-i|=1$. A bi-clique of size $m$ is a complete bipartite graph whose vertex classes are of size $m$. We prove that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a constant $c_k>0$ such that every ordered graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain a monotone path of length $k$ as an induced subgraph has a vertex of degree at least $c_kn$, or its complement has a bi-clique of size at l…
