We perform a set of non-radiative hydro-dynamical (NHD) simulations of a rich cluster sized dark matter halo from the Phoenix project with 3 different numerical resolutions, to investigate the effect of hydrodynamics alone on the subhalo population in the halo. Compared to dark matter only (DMO) simulations of the same halo, subhaloes are less abundant for relatively massive subhaloes ($M_{sub} > 2.5 \times 10^9h^{-1}M_{\odot}$, or $V_{max} > 70 kms^{-1}$) but more abundant for less massive subhaloes in the NHD simulations. This results in different shapes in the subhalo mass/$V_{max}$ function in two different sets of simulations. At given subhalo mass, the subhaloes less massive than $10^{10} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ have larger $V_{max}$ in the NHD than DMO simulations, while $V_{max}$ is similar for the subhaloes more massive than the mass value. This is mainly because the progenitors of present day low mass subhaloes have larger concentration parameters in the NHD than DMO simulations. The survival number fraction of the accreted low mass progenitors of the main halo at redshift 2 is about 50 percent higher in the NHD than DMO simulations.
We present a comprehensive study on how perturbations due to a distribution of $Λ$CDM dark matter subhalos can lead to star clusters deviating from their orbits. Through a large suite of massless test particle simulations, we find that (1) subhalos with masses less than $10^8 M_{\odot}$ negligibly affect test particle orbits, (2) perturbations lead to orbital deviations only in environments with substructure fractions $f_{sub} \geq 1\%$, (3) perturbations from denser subhalos produce larger orbital deviations, and (4) subhalo perturbations that are strong relative to the background tidal field…
A defining prediction of the cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological model is the existence of a very large population of low mass haloes, down to planet-size masses. However, their fate as they are accreted onto haloes many orders of magnitude more massive remains fundamentally uncertain. A number of numerical explorations have found subhaloes to be very resilient to tides, but resolution limits make it difficult to explore tidal evolution at arbitrarily low masses. What are the structural properties of heavily stripped subhaloes? Do tidal effects destroy low-mass CDM subhaloes? Here we focus on …
We compare the results of high-resolution simulations of individual dark matter subhalos evolving in external tidal fields with and without baryonic bulge and disk components, where the average dark matter particle mass is three orders of magnitude smaller than cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxy formation. The Via Lactea II simulation is used to setup our initial conditions and provides a basis for our simulations of subhalos in a dark matter-only tidal field, while an observationally motivated model for the Milky Way is used for the tidal field that is comprised of a dark matter halo,…
We perform high-resolution simulations of a MW-like galaxy in a self-interacting cold dark matter model with elastic cross section over mass of $1~\rm cm^2/g$ (SIDM) and compare to a model without self-interactions (CDM). We run our simulations with and without a time-dependent embedded potential to capture effects of the baryonic disk and bulge contributions. The CDM and SIDM simulations with the embedded baryonic potential exhibit remarkably similar host halo profiles, subhalo abundances and radial distributions within the virial radius. The SIDM host halo is denser in the center than the CD…
We simulate the tidal disruption of a collisionless N-body globular star cluster in a total of 300 different orbits selected to have galactocentric radii between 10 and 30 kpc in four dark matter halos: (a) a spherical halo with no subhalos, (b) a spherical halo with subhalos, (c) a realistic halo with no subhalos, and (d) a realistic halo with subhalos. This allows us to isolate and study how the halo's (lack of) dynamical symmetry and substructures affect the dispersal of tidal debris. The realistic halos are constructed from the snapshot of the Via Lactea II simulation at redshift zero. We …
Strong gravitational lensing observations can test structure formation models by constraining the masses and concentrations of subhaloes in massive galaxy clusters. Recent work has concluded that cluster subhaloes are more abundant and/or concentrated than predicted by $Λ$CDM simulations; this finding has been interpreted as arising from unidentified issues with simulations or an incorrect understanding of the nature of dark matter. We test these hypotheses by comparing observed subhalo masses and maximum circular velocities $v_\mathrm{max}$ to predictions from the high resolution Hydrangea ga…
Tidal streams in the Milky Way are sensitive probes of the population of dark-matter subhalos predicted in cold-dark-matter (CDM) simulations. We present a new calculus for computing the effect of subhalo fly-bys on cold tidal streams based on the action-angle representation of streams. The heart of this calculus is a line-of-parallel-angle approach that calculates the perturbed distribution function of a given stream segment by undoing the effect of all impacts. This approach allows one to compute the perturbed stream density and track in any coordinate system in minutes for realizations of t…

We demonstrate that the perturbations of strongly lensed images by low-mass dark matter subhalos are significantly impacted by the concentration of the perturbing subhalo. For subhalo concentrations expected in $Λ$CDM, significant constraints on the concentration can be obtained at HST resolution for subhalos with masses larger than about $10^{10}M_\odot$. Constraints are also possible for lower mass subhalos, if their concentrations are higher than the expected scatter in CDM. We also find that the concentration of lower mass perturbers down to $\sim 10^8M_\odot$ can be well-constrained with …
On small scales there have been a number of claims of discrepancies between the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model and observations. The 'missing satellites problem' infamously describes the overabundance of subhalos from CDM simulations compared to the number of satellites observed in the Milky Way. A variety of solutions to this discrepancy have been proposed; however, the impact of the specific properties of the Milky Way halo relative to the typical halo of its mass have yet to be explored. Motivated by recent studies that identified ways in which the Milky Way is atypical (e.g., Licqui…
We use high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations run with the EAGLE model of galaxy formation to study the differences between the properties of - and subsequently the lensing signal from - subhaloes of massive elliptical galaxies at redshift 0.2, in Cold and Sterile Neutrino (SN) Dark matter models. We focus on the two 7 keV SN models that bracket the range of matter power spectra compatible with resonantly-produced SN as the source of the observed 3.5 keV line. We derive an accurate parametrisation for the subhalo mass function in these two SN models relative to CDM, as well as the subhalo …
The presence of an invisible substructure has previously been detected in the gravitational lens galaxy SDSSJ0946+1006 through its perturbation of the lensed images. Using flexible models for the main halo and the subhalo perturbation to fit the lensed images, we demonstrate that the subhalo has an extraordinarily high central density and steep density slope. The inferred concentration for the subhalo is well above the expected scatter in concentrations for $Λ$CDM halos of similar mass. We robustly infer the subhalo's projected mass within 1 kpc to be $\sim 2$-$3.7\times 10^9$M$_\odot$ at $>$9…
We study evolution of single subhaloes with their masses of $\sim10^9 M_\odot$ in a Milky-Way-sized host halo for self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models. We perform dark-matter-only N-body simulations of dynamical evolution of individual subhaloes orbiting its host by varying self-scattering cross sections (including a velocity-dependent scenario), subhalo orbits, and internal properties of the subhalo. We calibrate a gravothermal fluid model to predict time evolution in spherical mass density profiles of isolated SIDM haloes with the simulations. We find that tidal effects of SIDM subhalo…
Recent kinematical constraints on the internal densities of the Milky Way's dwarf satellites have revealed a discrepancy with the subhalo populations of simulated Galaxy-scale halos in the standard CDM model of hierarchical structure formation. This has been dubbed the "too big to fail" problem, with reference to the improbability of large and invisible companions existing in the Galactic environment. In this paper, we argue that both the Milky Way observations and simulated subhalos are consistent with the predictions of the standard model for structure formation. Specifically, we show that t…
We use cosmological simulations to identify dark matter subhalo host candidates of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy using the stellar kinematic properties of Fornax. We consider cold dark matter (CDM), warm dark matter (WDM), and decaying dark matter (DDM) simulations for our models of structure formation. The subhalo candidates in CDM typically have smaller mass and higher concentrations at z = 0 than the corresponding candidates in WDM and DDM. We examine the formation histories of the ~ 100 Fornax candidate subhalos identified in CDM simulations and, using approximate luminosity-mass rela…
The steepness of the central density profiles of dark matter (DM) in low-mass galaxy halos (e.g. dwarf galaxies) is a powerful probe of the nature of DM. We propose a novel scheme to probe the inner profiles of galaxy subhalos using stellar streams. We show that the present day morphological and dynamical properties of accreted globular cluster (GC) streams - those produced from tidal stripping of GCs that initially evolved within satellite galaxies and later merged with the Milky Way (MW) - are sensitive to the central DM density profile and mass of their parent satellites. GCs that accrete w…
We track subhalo orbits of galaxy and group sized halos in cosmological simulations. We identify filamentary structures around halos and we use these to define a sample of subhalos accreted from filaments as well as a control sample of subhalos accreted from other directions. We use these samples to study differences in satellite orbits produced by filamentary accretion. Our results depend on host halo mass. We find that for low masses, subhalos accreted from filaments show $\sim10\%$ shorter lifetimes compared to the control sample, they show a tendency towards more radial orbits, reach halo …
We present the largest number of Milky Way sized dark matter halos simulated at very high mass ($\sim$$10^4$ M$_\odot$/particle) and temporal resolution ($\sim$5 Myrs/snapshot) done to date, quadrupling what is currently available in the literature. This initial suite consists of the first 24 halos of the $Caterpillar$ $Project$ (www.caterpillarproject.org) whose project goal of 60 - 70 halos will be made public when complete. We resolve $\sim$20,000 gravitationally bound subhalos within the virial radius of each host halo. Over the ranges set by our spatial resolution our convergence is excel…
N-body simulations make unambiguous predictions for the abundance of substructures within dark matter halos. However, the inclusion of baryons in the simulations changes the picture because processes associated with the presence of a large galaxy in the halo can destroy subhalos and substantially alter the mass function and velocity distribution of subhalos. We compare the effect of galaxy formation on subhalo populations in two state-of-the-art sets of hydrodynamical CDM simulations of Milky Way mass halos, APOSTLE and AURIGA. We introduce a new method for tracking the orbits of subhalos betw…
We study the abundance of subhaloes in the hydrodynamical cosmological simulation Illustris, which includes both baryons and dark matter in a $Λ$CDM volume 106.5 Mpc a side. We compare Illustris to its dark matter-only (DMO) analogue, Illustris-Dark, and quantify the effects of baryonic processes on the demographics of subhaloes in the host mass range $10^{11}$ to $3 \times 10^{14} \msun$. We focus on both the evolved ($z=0$) subhalo cumulative mass functions (SHMF) and the statistics of subhaloes ever accreted, i.e. infall subhalo mass function. We quantify the variance in subhalo abundance a…
Any successful model of dark matter must explain the diversity of observed Milky Way (MW) satellite density profiles, from very dense ultrafaints to large, low density satellites such as Crater~II that appear to be larger their anticipated host dark matter haloes. We consider cold dark matter (CDM), warm dark matter (WDM, 3.3keV thermal relic power spectrum), and a self-interacting dark matter model (SIDM) that induces gravothermal collapse in low mass subhaloes. Predictions for these density profiles are complicated by the limitations of simulation resolution in the stripping of subhaloes by …
The spatial distribution of Milky Way (MW) subhaloes provides an important set of observables for testing cosmological models. These include the radial distribution of luminous satellites, planar configurations, and the abundance of dark subhaloes whose existence or absence is key to distinguishing amongst dark matter models. We use the COCO $N$-body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) and 3.3keV thermal relic warm dark matter (WDM) to predict the satellite spatial distribution in the limit that the impact of baryonic physics is minimal. We demonstrate that the radial distributions of CDM an…
We study the substructure population of Milky Way (MW)-mass halos in the $Λ$CDM cosmology using a novel procedure to extrapolate subhalo number statistics beyond the resolution limit of N-body simulations. The technique recovers the mean and the variance of the subhalo abundance, but not its spatial distribution. It extends the dynamic range over which precise statistical predictions can be made by the equivalent of performing a simulation with 50 times higher resolution, at no additional computational cost. We apply this technique to MW-mass halos, but it can easily be applied to halos of any…
We use six, high-resolution $Λ$CDM simulations of galaxy formation to study how emission from dark matter annihilation is affected by baryonic processes. These simulations produce isolated, disc-dominated galaxies with structure, stellar populations, and stellar and halo masses comparable to those of the Milky Way. They resolve dark matter structures with mass above $\sim 10^6$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ and are each available in both full-physics and dark-matter-only versions. In the full-physics case, formation of the stellar galaxy enhances annihilation radiation from the dominant smooth component of …
The cold dark matter (CDM) scenario predicts that galactic halos should host a huge amount of subhalos possibly lighter than planets, depending on the nature of dark matter. Predicting their abundance and distribution has important implications for dark matter searches and searches for subhalos themselves, as they could provide a decisive test of the CDM paradigm. A major difficulty in subhalo population model building is to account for the gravitational stripping induced by baryons, which strongly impact on the overall dynamics inside galaxies. In this paper, we focus on these "baryonic" tide…
We use N-body simulations to study the evolution of cuspy cold dark matter (CDM) halos in the gravitational potential of a massive host. Tidal mass losses reshape CDM halos, leaving behind bound remnants whose characteristic densities are set by the mean density of the host at the pericentre of their respective orbit. The evolution to the final bound remnant state is essentially complete after ~5 orbits for nearly circular orbits, while reaching the same remnant requires ~25 and ~40 orbits for eccentric orbits with 1:5 and 1:20 pericentre-to-apocentre ratios, respectively. The density profile …

If the dark matter halos of galaxies contain large numbers of subhalos as predicted by the $Λ$CDM model, these subhalos are expected to appear in strong galaxy--galaxy lens systems as small--scale perturbations in individual images. We simulate observations of multiply--lensed sub--mm galaxies at $z\sim2$ as a probe of the dark matter halo of a lens galaxy at $z\sim0.5$. We present detection limits for dark substructures based on a visibility plane analysis of simulated Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) data in bands 7, 8 and 9. We explore two effects: local surface brightnes…
Ample observational capabilities exist today to detect the small density perturbations that low-mass dark matter subhaloes impart on stellar streams from disrupting Galactic satellites. In anticipation of these observations, we investigate the expected number and size of gaps by combining an analytic prescription for gap evolution on circular orbits with the flux of subhaloes near the stream. We explore the distribution of gap sizes and depths for a typical cold stream around the Milky Way and find that for a given stream age and gap depth, each subhalo mass produces a characteristic gap size.…
We use the Copernicus Complexio (COCO) high resolution $N$-body simulations to investigate differences in the properties of small-scale structures in the standard cold dark matter (CDM) model and in a model with a cutoff in the initial power spectrum of density fluctuations consistent with both a thermally produced warm dark matter (WDM) particle or a sterile neutrino with mass 7 keV and leptogenesis parameter $L_6=8.7$. The latter corresponds to the "coldest" model with this sterile neutrino mass compatible with the identification of the recently detected 3.5 keV X-ray line as resulting from …

A galaxy-sized halo may contain a large number of intermediate mass (10^{2-4} solar mass) compact objects (IMCOs), which can be intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) or the CDM subhalos. We propose to directly detect the IMBHs by observing multiply imaged QSO-galaxy lens systems with a high angular resolution (~ 0.03mas), which would be achieved by the next-VLBI space missions. The silhouette of the IMBHs would appear as an either monopole-like or dipole-like variation at the scale of the Einstein radius against the QSO jets. As a byproduct, we can also directly detect the 10^{4-5} solar mass …
The central density profiles in dwarf galaxy halos depend strongly on the nature of dark matter. Recently, in Malhan et al. (2021), we employed N-body simulations to show that the cuspy cold dark matter (CDM) subhalos predicted by cosmological simulations can be differentiated from cored subhalos using the properties of accreted globular cluster (GC) streams since these GCs experience tidal stripping within their parent halos prior to accretion onto the Milky Way. We previously found that clusters that are accreted within cuspy subhalos produce streams with larger physical widths and higher di…
Among the most important goals in cosmology is detecting and quantifying small ($M_{\rm halo}\simeq10^{6-9}~\mathrm{M}_\odot$) dark matter (DM) subhalos. Current probes around the Milky Way (MW) are most sensitive to such substructure within $\sim20$ kpc of the halo center, where the galaxy contributes significantly to the potential. We explore the effects of baryons on subhalo populations in $Λ$CDM using cosmological zoom-in baryonic simulations of MW-mass halos from the Latte simulation suite, part of the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. Specifically, we compare simulations…
$Λ$-Warm Dark Matter (WDM) has been proposed as alternative scenario to $Λ$ cold dark matter (CDM), motivated by discrepancies at the scale of dwarf galaxies, with less small-scale power and realized by collisionless particles with energies in the range $1-3$ keV. We present a new approach to constrain the viability of such WDM models using star formation histories of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) in the Local Group. We compare their high time-resolution star formation histories (SFHs) obtained with HST-based color magnitude diagrams with the range of possible collapse redshifts of the…
Stellar tidal streams are sensitive tracers of the properties of the gravitational potential in which they orbit and detailed observations of their density structure can be used to place stringent constraints on fluctuations in the potential caused by, e.g., the expected populations of dark matter subhalos in the standard cold dark matter paradigm (CDM). Simulations of the evolution of stellar streams in live $N$-body halos without low-mass dark-matter subhalos, however, indicate that streams exhibit significant perturbations on small scales even in the absence of substructure. Here we demonst…

Within the cosmological concordance model, Cold Dark Matter (CDM) subhalos form the building blocks which merge hierarchically to more massive galaxies. Since intergalactic gas is accreted by massive galaxies, observable e.g. as high- velocity clouds (HVCs) around the Milky Way, with extremely low metallicities, these can be suggested to represent the baryonic content of primordial Dark Matter (DM) subhalos. Another possibility of their origin is that they stem from disrupted satellite galaxies, but in this case, these gas clouds move unaccompanied by a bound DM structure. Since HVCs are obser…
We compare the kinematics of M31's satellite galaxies to the mass profiles of the subhaloes they are expected to inhabit in LCDM. We consider the most massive subhaloes of an approximately M31-sized halo, following the assumption of a monotonic galaxy luminosity-to-subhalo mass mapping. While this abundance matching relation is consistent with the kinematic data for galaxies down to the luminosity of the bright satellites of the Milky Way and M31, it is not consistent with kinematic data for fainter dwarf galaxies (those with L <~ 10^8 Lsun). Comparing the kinematics of M31's dwarf Spheroidal …
We examine the spatial distribution and orbital pole correlations of satellites in a suite of zoom-in high-resolution dissipationless simulations of Miky Way (MW) sized haloes. We use the measured distribution to estimate the incidence of satellite configurations as flattened and as correlated in their orbital pole distribution as satellite system of the Milky Way. We confirm that this incidence is sensitive to the radial distribution of subhaloes and thereby to the processes that affect it, such as artificial disruption due to numerical effects and disruption due to the central disk. Controll…
In the cold dark matter (CDM) picture of structure formation, galaxy mass distributions are predicted to have a considerable amount of structure on small scales. Strong gravitational lensing has proven to be a useful tool for studying this small-scale structure. Much of the attention has been given to detecting individual dark matter subhalos through lens modeling, but recent work has suggested that the full population of subhalos could be probed using a power spectrum analysis. In this paper we quantify the power spectrum of small-scale structure in simulated galaxies, with the goal of unders…
It has been proposed that gravothermal collapse due to dark matter self-interactions (i.e. self-interacting dark matter, SIDM) can explain the observed diversity of the Milky Way (MW) satellites' central dynamical masses. We investigate the process behind this hypothesis using an $N$-body simulation of a MW-analogue halo with velocity dependent self-interacting dark matter (vdSIDM) in which the low velocity self-scattering cross-section, $σ_{T}/m_{x}$, reaches 100 cm$^{2}$g$^{-1}$; we dub this model the vd100 model. We compare the results of this simulation to simulations of the same halo that…
