We report the discovery of a 1201 s orbital period binary, the third shortest-period detached binary known. SDSS J232230.20+050942.06 contains two He-core white dwarfs orbiting with a 27 deg inclination. Located 0.76 kpc from the Sun, the binary has an estimated LISA 4-yr signal-to-noise ratio of 40. J2322+0509 is the first He+He white dwarf LISA verification binary, a source class that is predicted to account for one-third of resolved LISA ultra-compact binary detections.
We model the Galactic population of detached binaries that harbor black holes with (0.5-1.7) solar mass companions -- the remnants of case B mass-exchange that rapidly cross Hertzsprung gap after the termination of the Roche-lobe overflow or as He-shell burning stars. Several such binaries can be currently present in the Galaxy. The range of black hole masses in them is about 4 to 10 solar ones, the orbital periods are tens to hundreds day. The unique BH-binary LB-1 fits well into this extremely rare class of double stars.
We report the discovery of the brightest detached binary white dwarfs with periods less than an hour, which provide two new gravitational wave verification binaries for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). The first one, SMSS J033816.16$-$813929.9 (hereafter J0338), is a 30.6 min orbital period, $g=17.2$ mag detached double white dwarf binary with a Gaia parallax measurement that places it at a distance of 533 pc. The observed radial velocity and photometric variability provide precise constraints on the system parameters. J0338 contains a $0.230 \pm 0.015~M_{\odot}$ white dwarf with…
We report the discovery of ZTF J2243+5242, an eclipsing double white dwarf binary with an orbital period of just $8.8$ minutes, the second known eclipsing binary with an orbital period less than ten minutes. The system likely consists of two low-mass white dwarfs, and will merge in approximately 400,000 years to form either an isolated hot subdwarf or an R Coronae Borealis star. Like its $6.91\, \rm min$ counterpart, ZTF J1539+5027, ZTF J2243+5242 will be among the strongest gravitational wave sources detectable by the space-based gravitational-wave detector The Laser Space Interferometer Ante…
We report the discovery of two detached double white dwarf (WD) binaries, SDSS J082239.546+304857.19 and SDSS J104336.275+055149.90, with orbital periods of 40 and 46 min, respectively. The 40 min system is eclipsing; it is composed of a 0.30 Msun and a 0.52 Msun WD. The 46 min system is a likely LISA verification binary. The short 20 Myr and ~34 Myr gravitational wave merger times of the two binaries imply that many more such systems have formed and merged over the age of the Milky Way. We update the estimated Milky Way He+CO WD binary merger rate and affirm our previously published result: H…
We report the discovery of a detached double white dwarf binary with an orbital period of $\approx20.6\,\rm minutes$, PTF J053332.05+020911.6. The visible object in this binary, PTF J0533+0209B, is a $\approx 0.17\,M_\odot$ mass white dwarf with a helium-dominated atmosphere containing traces of hydrogen (DBA). This object exhibits ellipsoidal variations due to tidal deformation, and is the visible component in a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a velocity semi-amplitude of $K_B=618.7\pm6.9 \, \rm km \, s^{-1}$. We have detected significant orbital decay due to the emission of gravitatio…
Abridged. Our aim is to measure the masses and radii of the stars in a newly-discovered detached eclipsing binary system to a high precision ($\approx$1%), enabling the system to be used for the calibration of free parameters in stellar evolutionary models. Photometry from the Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP) project was used to identify 1SWASP J063930.33-322404.8 (TYC 7091-888-1, WASP 0369-32 hereafter) as a detached eclipsing binary system with total eclipses and an orbital period of P=11.66 days. Lightcurve parameters for WASP 0639-32 are obtained using the ebop lightcurve model, with s…
Recently, Tamanini & Danielski (2019) discussed the possibility to detect circumbinary exoplanets (CBPs) orbiting double white dwarfs (DWDs) with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Extending their methods and criteria, we discuss the prospects for detecting exoplanets around DWDs not only by LISA, but also by Taiji, a Chinese space-borne gravitational-wave (GW) mission which has a slightly better sensitivity at low frequencies. We first explore how different binary masses and mass ratios affect the abilities of LISA and Taiji to detect CBPs. Second, for certain known detached DWDs …
Ultracompact cataclysmic variables (CVs) of the AM CVn type are deemed to be important verification sources for the future space gravitational wave detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We model the present-day Galactic population of AM CVn stars with He-star donors. Such a population has long expected to exist, though only a couple of candidates are known. We applied the hybrid method of binary population synthesis (BPS) which combines a simulation of the population of immediate precursors of AM CVn stars by a fast BPS code with subsequent tracking of their evolutio…
We use photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eclipsing binary E32 in the globular cluster 47 Tuc to derive the masses, radii, and luminosities of the component stars. The system has an orbital period of 40.9 d, a markedly eccentric orbit with e = 0.24, and is shown to be a member of or a recent escaper from the cluster. We obtain Mp = 0.862(5) Msun , Rp = 1.183(3) Rsun , Lp = 1.65(5) Lsun for the primary and Ms = 0.827(5) Msun , Rs = 1.004(4) Rsun , Ls = 1.14(4) Lsun for the secondary. Based on these data and on an earlier analysis of the binary V69 in 47 Tuc we measure the distanc…
We perform binary evolution calculations on helium star - carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) binaries using the stellar evolution code MESA. This single degenerate channel may contribute significantly to thermonuclear supernovae at short delay times. We examine the thermal-timescale mass transfer from a 1.1 - 2.0 $M_{\odot}$ helium star to a 0.90 - 1.05 $M_{\odot}$ CO WD for initial orbital periods in the range 0.05 - 1 day. Systems in this range may produce a thermonuclear supernova, helium novae, a helium star - oxygen-neon WD binary, or a detached double CO WD binary. Our time-dependent calc…
We present the results of an analysis aimed at testing the accuracy and precision of the PARSEC v1.2S library of stellar evolution models, in a Bayesian framework, to infer stellar parameters. We mainly employ the online DEBCat catalogue by Southworth, a compilation of detached eclipsing binary systems with published measurements of masses and radii to $\sim$ 2 per cent precision. We select a sample of 318 binary components, with masses between 0.10 and 14.5 Msun, at distances between 1.3 pc and ~ 8 kpc for Galactic objects and ~ 44-68 kpc for extragalactic ones. The Bayesian analysis applied …
Although the theory of cataclysmic variable (CV) evolution is able to explain several observational aspects, strong discrepancies have existed for decades between observations and theoretical predictions of the orbital period distribution, the location of the minimum period, and the space density of CVs. Moreover, it has been shown in the last decade that the average white dwarf (WD) mass observed in CVs is significantly higher than the average mass in single WDs or in detached progenitors of CVs, and that there is an absence of helium-core WDs in CVs which is not observed in their immediate d…
Galactic binaries with orbital periods less than $\approx$1 hr are strong gravitational wave sources in the mHz regime, ideal for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). In fact, theory predicts that \emph{LISA} will resolve tens of thousands of Galactic binaries individually with a large fraction being bright enough for electromagnetic observations. This opens up a new window where we can study a statistical sample of compact Galactic binaries in both, the electromagnetic as well the gravitational wavebands. Using multi-messenger observations we can measure tidal effects in detached do…
Using data from the extended Kepler mission in K2 Campaign 10 we identify two eclipsing binaries containing white dwarfs with cool companions that have extremely short orbital periods of only 71.2 min (SDSS J1205-0242, a.k.a. EPIC 201283111) and 72.5 min (SDSS J1231+0041, a.k.a. EPIC 248368963). Despite their short periods, both systems are detached with small, low-mass companions, in one case a brown dwarf, and the other case either a brown dwarf or a low-mass star. We present follow-up photometry and spectroscopy of both binaries, as well as phase-resolved spectroscopy of the brighter system…
Neutron star-helium white dwarf (NS+He WD) binaries are important evolutionary products of close-orbit binary star systems. They are often observed as millisecond pulsars and may continue evolving into ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) and continuous gravitational wave (GW) sources that will be detected by space-borne GW observatories, such as LISA, TianQin and Taiji. Nevertheless, the stability of NS+He WD binaries undergoing mass transfer is not well studied and still under debate. In this paper, we model the evolution of NS+He WD binaries with WD masses ranging from 0.17-0.45 $M_{\odot}$…
Most close double helium white dwarfs will merge within a Hubble time due to orbital decay by gravitational-wave radiation. However, a significant fraction with low mass ratios will survive for a long time as a consequence of stable mass transfer. Such stable mass transfer between two helium white dwarfs (HeWD) provides one channel for the production of AM\,CVn binary stars. In previous calculations of double HeWD progenitors, the accreting HeWD was treated as a point mass. We have computed the evolution of 16 double HeWD models in order to investigate the consequences of treating the detailed…
We have searched the Gaia DR2 catalogue for previously unknown hot white dwarfs in the direction of young open star clusters. The aim of this experiment was to try and extend the initial-final mass relation (IFMR) to somewhat higher masses, potentially providing a tension with the Chandrasekhar limit currently thought to be around 1.38 M$_{\odot}$. We discovered a particularly interesting white dwarf in the direction of the young $\sim$150 Myr old cluster Messier 47 (NGC 2422). All Gaia indicators (proper motion, parallax, location in the Gaia colour-magnitude diagram) suggest that it is a clu…
Close-orbit low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), radio binary millisecond pulsars (BMSPs) with extremely low-mass helium WDs (ELM He~WDs) and ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) are all part of the same evolutionary sequence. It is therefore of uttermost importance to understand how these populations evolve from one specie to another. Moreover, UCXBs are important gravitational wave (GW) sources and can be detected by future space-borne GW observatories. However, the formation and evolutionary link between these three different populations of neutron star (NS) binaries are not fully understood. I…
We report the discovery of a new eclipsing EL CVn-type binary, consisting of a $δ$ Sct-type pulsator and a thermally bloated low-mass pre-He white dwarf (WD). Spectroscopy and time-series $BV$ photometry of V1224 Cas were carried out. The spectroscopy reveals a spectral type of A3 for the star. Light-curve modelling indicate that V1224 Cas is a short-period detached system containing a possible low-mass WD with an effective temperature of about 9516 K. Based on the effective temperature and the surface gravity of the A-type primary star from the spectroscopic results, the absolute parameters o…

Tight binaries of helium white dwarfs (He WDs) orbiting millisecond pulsars (MSPs) will eventually "merge" due to gravitational damping of the orbit. The outcome has been predicted to be the production of long-lived ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs), in which the WD transfers material to the accreting neutron star (NS). Here we present complete numerical computations, for the first time, of such stable mass transfer from a He WD to a NS. We have calculated a number of complete binary stellar evolution tracks, starting from pre-LMXB systems, and evolved these to detached MSP+WD systems and f…
We demonstrate a method to fully characterize mass-transferring double white dwarf (DWD) systems with a helium-rich (He) WD donor based on the mass--radius relationship for He WDs. Using a simulated Galactic population of DWDs, we show that donor and accretor masses can be inferred for up to $\sim\, 60$ systems observed by both Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Gaia. Half of these systems will have mass constraints $Δ\,M_{\rm{D}}\lesssim0.2M_{\odot}$ and $Δ\,M_{\rm{A}}\lesssim2.3\,M_{\odot}$. We also show how the orbital frequency evolution due to astrophysical processes and gravit…

About a quarter of massive binary stars undergo mass transfer while both stars burn hydrogen at their cores, first on the thermal and then on the nuclear timescale. The nuclear timescale mass transfer leads to observable counterparts: the semi-detached so-called massive Algol binaries. However, comprehensive model predictions for these systems are sparse. We study them using a large grid of ~10,000 detailed binary evolution models calculated with the stellar evolution code MESA, covering initial donor masses between 10-40 M$_{\odot}$ and initial orbital periods above 1.4 d, at a metallicity su…
We present the final sample of 98 detached double white dwarf (WD) binaries found in the Extremely Low Mass (ELM) Survey, a spectroscopic survey targeting <0.3 Msun He-core WDs completed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint. Over the course of the survey we observed ancillary low mass WD candidates like GD278, which we show is a P=0.19 d double WD binary, as well as candidates that turn out to be field blue straggler/subdwarf A-type stars with luminosities too large to be WDs given their Gaia parallaxes. Here, we define a clean sample of ELM WDs that is complete within our target selectio…
Spectroscopic Evidence for a 5.4-Minute Orbital Period in HM Cancri
With the prevalence of wide-field, time-domain photometric sky surveys, the number of eclipsing white dwarf systems being discovered is increasing dramatically. An efficient method to follow these up will be key to determining any population trends and finding any particularly interesting examples. We demonstrate that multi-band eclipse photometry of binaries containing a white dwarf and an M~dwarf can be used to determine the masses and temperatures of the white dwarfs to better than 5 per cent. For the M~dwarfs we measure their parameters to a precision of better than 6 per cent with the unc…
We present high precision, model independent, mass and radius measurements for 16 white dwarfs in detached eclipsing binaries and combine these with previously published data to test the theoretical white dwarf mass-radius relationship. We reach a mean precision of 2.4 per cent in mass and 2.7 per cent in radius, with our best measurements reaching a precision of 0.3 per cent in mass and 0.5 per cent in radius. We find excellent agreement between the measured and predicted radii across a wide range of masses and temperatures. We also find the radii of all white dwarfs with masses less than 0.4…
Interacting binaries containing white dwarfs can lead to a variety of outcomes that range from powerful thermonuclear explosions, which are important in the chemical evolution of galaxies and as cosmological distance estimators, to strong sources of low frequency gravitational wave radiation, which makes them ideal calibrators for the gravitational low-frequency wave detector LISA mission. However, current theoretical evolution models still fail to explain the observed properties of the known populations of white dwarfs in both interacting and detached binaries. Major limitations are that the …
We present the discovery of SDSS J135154.46-064309.0, a short-period variable observed using 30-minute cadence photometry in K2 Campaign 6. Follow-up spectroscopy and high-speed photometry support a classification as a new member of the rare class of ultracompact accreting binaries known as AM CVn stars. The spectroscopic orbital period of $15.65 \pm 0.12$\,minutes makes this system the fourth-shortest period AM CVn known, and the second system of this type to be discovered by the Kepler spacecraft. The K2 data show photometric periods at $15.7306 \pm 0.0003$\,minutes, $16.1121 \pm 0.0004$\,mi…
Wide-field time-domain photometric sky surveys are now finding hundreds of eclipsing white dwarf plus M dwarf binaries, a population encompassing a wealth of information and potential insight into white dwarf and close binary astrophysics. Precise follow-up observations are essential in order to fully constrain these systems and capitalise on the power of this sample. We present the first results from our program of high-speed, multi-band photometric follow-up. We develop a method to measure temperatures, (model-dependent) masses, and radii for both components from the eclipse photometry alone…
The bright transient AT2018cow has been unlike any other known type of transient. Its high brightness, rapid rise and decay and initially nearly featureless spectrum are unprecedented and difficult to explain using models for similar burst sources. We present evidence for faint gamma-ray emission continuing for at least 8 days, and featureless spectra in the ultraviolet bands -- both unusual for eruptive sources. The X-ray variability of the source has a burst-like character. The UV-optical spectrum does not show any CNO line but is well described by a blackbody. We demonstrate that a model in…
