Quantum correlators of pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in D=3,4,6 and 10 dimensions can be reformulated via the non-linear and non-local transformation (`Nicolai map') that maps the full functional measure of the interacting theory to that of a free bosonic theory. As a special application we show that for the maximally extended N=4 theory in four dimensions, and up to order O(g^2), all known results for scalar correlators can be recovered in this way without any use of anti-commuting variables, in terms of a purely bosonic and ghost free functional measure for the gauge fields. This includes in particular the dilatation operator yielding the anomalous dimensions of composite operators. The formalism is thus competitive with more standard perturbative techniques.
Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is formulated in six dimensions, without the use of anti-commuting variables. This is achieved using a new Nicolai map, to third order in the coupling constant. This is the second such map in six dimensions and highlights a potential ambiguity in the formalism.
We perform the derivation of the two-point correlation function in N=4 D=4 super Yang-Mills theory from superstring theory by computing the dilaton scattering amplitude in the NSR formulation of superstring theory on $AdS_5\times{S^5}$
The path integral computation of field strength correlation functions for two dimensional Yang-Mills theories over Riemann surfaces is studied. The calculation is carried out by abelianization, which leads to correlators that are topological. They are nontrivial as a result of the topological obstructions to the abelianization. It is shown in the large N limit on the sphere that the correlators undergo second order phase transitions at the critical point. Our results are applied to a computation of contractible Wilson loops.
Explicit computations of the partition function and correlation functions of Wilson and Polyakov loop operators in theta-sectors of two dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the line cylinder and torus are presented. Several observations about the correspondence of two dimensional Yang-Mills theory with unitary matrix quantum mechanics are presented. The incorporation of the theta-angle which characterizes the states of two dimensional adjoint QCD is discussed.
Multi-trace scalar operators in the (0,k,0) representations of SU(4)_R share many properties with their single-trace analogs. These multi-trace operators are primary fields of short representations of the N=4 superconformal group. Thus, they have protected dimensions. We show that two- and three-point correlator functions of such operators do not receive radiative corrections at order g^2 in perturbation theory for an arbitrary gauge group.
A perturbative calculation of the correlator of three parallel open Wilson lines is performed for the U(N) theory in two non-commutative space-time dimensions. In the large-N planar limit, the perturbative series is fully resummed and asymptotically leads to an exponential increase of the correlator with the lengths of the lines, in spite of an interference effect between lines with the same orientation. This result generalizes a similar increase occurring in the two-line correlator and is likely to persist when more lines are considered provided they share the same direction.
We use the flat space limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence to derive a simple relation between the 2 to 2 scattering amplitude of massless string states in type IIB superstring theory on ten-dimensional Minkowski space and a scaling limit of the N=4 super Yang-Mills four point functions. We conjecture that this relation holds non-perturbatively and at arbitrarily high energy.
We study the correlator of two parallel Wilson lines in two-dimensional noncommutative Yang-Mills theory, following two different approaches. We first consider a perturbative expansion in the large-N limit and resum all planar diagrams. The second approach is non-perturbative: we exploit the Morita equivalence, mapping the two open lines on the noncommutative torus (which eventually gets decompacted) in two closed Wilson loops winding around the dual commutative torus. Planarity allows us to single out a suitable region of the variables involved, where a saddle-point approximation of the gener…
We compute, to the lowest perturbative order in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory, $n$-point correlators in the coordinate and momentum representation of the gauge-invariant twist-$2$ operators with maximal spin along the $p_+$ direction, both in Minkowskian and -- by analytic continuation -- Euclidean space-time. We also construct the corresponding generating functionals. Remarkably, they have the structure of the logarithm of a functional determinant of the identity plus a term involving the effective propagators that act on the appropriate source fields.
We study tree-level celestial amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory -- Mellin transforms of multi-gluon scattering amplitudes that convert them into the correlators of conformal primary fields on two-dimensional celestial sphere. By using purely field-theoretical methods, we show that the soft conformal limit of celestial amplitudes, in which one of the primary field operators associated to gauge bosons becomes a dimension one current, is dominated by the contributions of low-energy soft particles. This result confirms conclusions reached by using Yang-Mills theory formulated in curvilinear coordina…
We test the conjectured relationship between N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and IIB supergravity compactified on $AdS_5\times S_5$ by computing the two- and three-point functions of R-symmetry currents. We observe that the integral expressions describing the general three-point correlator on the supergravity side have a structure similar to one-loop triangle diagrams in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. This allows us to compare the expressions on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence without the technical complications of the loop integrations. We confirm that the two- and three…
Discrete minimal surface algebras and Yang Mills algebras may be related to (generalized) Kac Moody algebras, just as Membrane (matrix) models and the IKKT model - including a novel construction technique for minimal surfaces.
Certain correlation functions are computed exactly in the zero coupling limit of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(N). A set of linearly independent operators that are in one-to-one correspondence with the half-BPS representations of the SU(N) gauge theory is given. These results are used to study giant gravitons in the dual AdS5xS5 string theory. In addition, for the U(N) gauge theory, we explain how to systematically identify contributions coming from the boundary degrees of freedom.
We perform a numerical bootstrap study of the mixed correlator system containing the half-BPS operators of dimension two and three in $\mathcal N = 4$ Super Yang-Mills. This setup improves on previous works in the literature that only considered single correlators of one or the other operator. We obtain upper bounds on the leading twist in a given representation of the R-symmetry by imposing gaps on the twist of all operators rather than the dimension of a single one. As a result we find a tension between the large $N$ supergravity predictions and the numerical finite $N$ results already at $N…
We study two-point functions of single-trace half-BPS operators in the presence of a supersymmetric Wilson line in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. We use inversion formula technology in order to reconstruct the CFT data starting from a single discontinuity of the correlator. In the planar strong coupling limit only a finite number of conformal blocks contributes to the discontinuity, which allows us to obtain elegant closed-form expressions for two-point functions of single-trace operators $\mathcal{O}_J$ of weight $J=2,3,4$. Our final result passes a number of non-trivial consistency checks: it has the …
Supersymmetric circular Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory are discussed starting from their Gaussian matrix model representations. Previous results on the generating functions of Wilson loops are reviewed and extended to the more general case of two different loop contours, which is necessary to discuss coincident loops with opposite orientations. A combinatorial formula representing the connected correlators of multiply wound Wilson loops in terms of the matrix model solution is derived. Two new results are obtained on the expectation value of the circular Wilson loop, t…
This paper concerns a special class of $n$-point correlation functions of operators in the stress tensor supermultiplet of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory. These are "maximal $U(1)_Y$-violating" correlators that violate the bonus $U(1)_Y$ charge by a maximum of $2(n-4)$ units. We will demonstrate that such correlators satisfy $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-covariant recursion relations that relate $n$-point correlators to $(n-1)$-point correlators in a manner analogous to the soft dilaton relations that relate the corresponding amplitudes in flat-space type IIB superstring theory.…
We use AdS/CFT duality to compute in N=4 Yang-Mills theory the finite temperature spatial correlator G(r) of the scalar operator F^2, integrated over imaginary time. The computation is carried out both at zero frequency and integrating the spectral function over frequencies. The result is compared with a perturbative computation in finite T SU(N_c) Yang-Mills theory.
We investigate the behavior of energy momentum tensor correlators in strongly coupled large-N_c Yang-Mills theory at nonzero temperature, working within the Improved Holographic QCD model. In particular, we determine the spectral functions and corresponding imaginary time correlators in the bulk and shear channels, and compare the results to recent perturbative and lattice calculations where available. For the bulk channel imaginary time correlator, for which all three results exist, lattice data is seen to favor the holographic prediction over the perturbative one over a wide range of tempera…

We solve N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory in 1+1 dimensions at strong coupling to directly confirm the predictions of supergravity at weak coupling. We do our calculations in the large-N_c approximation using Supersymmetric Discrete Light-Cone Quantization with up to 3*10^{12} basis states. We calculate the stress-energy correlator <T^{++}(r) T^{++}(0)> as a function of the separation r and find that at intermediate values of r the correlator behaves as r^{-5} to within errors as predicted by weak-coupling supergravity. We also present an extension to significantly higher resolution of our earl…
In this work we perform an investigation of the flux tube between two static color sources in four dimensional $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory, using the so called connected correlator. Contrary to most previous studies we do not use any smoothing algorithm to facilitate the evaluation of the correlator, that is performed using only stochastically exact techniques. We first examine the renormalization properties of the connected operator, then we present our numerical data for the longitudinal chromoelectric component of the flux tube, that are used to extract the dual superconductivity parameters.
We consider the complex scalar field coupled to background NC U(1) YM and calculate the correlator of two gauge invariant composite operators. We show how the noncommutative gauge invariance is restored for higher correlators (though the Green's function itself is not invariant). It is interesting that the recently discovered noncommutative solitons appear in the calculation.
We study the high energy limit of a six-point R-current correlator in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for finite N_c. We make use of the framework of perturbative resummation of large logarithms of the energy. More specifically, we apply the (extended) generalized leading logarithmic approximation. We find that the same conformally invariant two-to-four gluon vertex occurs as in non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. As a new feature we find a direct coupling of the four-gluon t-channel state to the R-current impact factor.
We propose that, in N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory, correlation functions of certain 1/8 BPS Wilson loops and local operators inserted on a S^2 in space-time may be computed in terms of analogous observables in the "zero-instanton" sector of 2d Yang-Mills theory. The Wilson loops are mapped to the standard Wilson loops of the 2d theory, as recently conjectured, while the local operators are mapped to powers of the 2d field strength. We give several perturbative checks of the correspondence, and derive from 2d Yang-Mills a two-matrix model for the correlator of a local operator and a Wilson loop o…
In this paper we study the n-point correlation functions of two different families of local gauge invariant operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The main idea is to consider the correlation functions of operators which all share a number of supersymmetries irrespective of their relative locations. We achieve this by equipping the operators with explicit space-time dependence. We provide evidence by different methods that these n-point correlators do not receive quantum corrections in perturbation theory and are hence given exactly by their tree-level result. The arguments rely on…
We use AdS/QCD duality to compute the finite temperature Green's function G(omega,k;T) of the shear operator T_12 for all omega,k in hot Yang-Mills theory. The goal is to assess how the existence of scales like the transition temperature and glueball masses affects the correlator computed in the scalefree conformal N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We observe sizeable effects for T close to T_c which rapidly disappear with increasing T. Quantitative agreement of these predictions with future lattice Monte Carlo data would suggest that QCD matter in this temperature range is strongly intera…
The thesis is considering aspects of SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics in its deconfining high-temperature phase. We calculate the two-point correlation function of the energy density of the photon in a thermalized gas, at first in the conventional U(1) gauge theory, followed by a calculation, where the photon is identified with the massless gauge mode in deconfining SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics. Apart from the fact, that this calculation is interesting from a technical point of view, we can consider several aspects of phenomenological relevance. Since we interpret the two-point correlator of…
We compute $1/λ$ corrections to the four-point functions of half-BPS operators in $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling $λ=g_\text{YM}^2 N$ using two methods. Firstly, we relate integrals of these correlators to derivatives of the mass deformed $S^4$ free energy, which was computed at leading order in large $N$ and to all orders in $1/λ$ using supersymmetric localization. Secondly, we use AdS/CFT to relate these $1/λ$ corrections to higher derivative corrections to supergravity for scattering amplitudes of Kaluza-Klein scalars in IIB string th…
We construct the wave functions in the q-deformed 2d Yang-Mills theory that compute torus correlation functions of affine currents in the VOA associated to a class of 4d $N = 2$ SCFTs. These wave functions are then shown to reduce to the topological correlators of a set of Coulomb branch operators in the $T[SU(N)]$ theory, from which those correlators in the 3d mirror dual of the 4d TN theories can be computed.
In the framework of the semiclassical approach, we compute the normalized structure constants in three-point correlation functions, when two of the vertex operators correspond to "heavy" string states, while the third vertex corresponds to a "light" state. This is done for the case when the "heavy" string states are finite-size giant magnons, carrying one or two angular momenta. The "light" states are taken to be singlet scalar operators on higher string levels. We first consider the case of string theory on AdS_5xS^5 dual to N = 4 super Yang-Mills. Then we extend the obtained results to the g…

Faddeev and Niemi have proposed a reformulation of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in terms of new variables, appropriate for describing the theory in its infrared limit based on the intuitive picture of colour confinement due to monopole condensation. I generalize their proposal (with some differences) to SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. The natural variables are $N-1$ mutually commuting traceless $N\times N$ Hermitian matrices, an element of the maximal torus defined by these commuting matrices, $N-1$ Abelian gauge fields for the maximal torus gauge group, and an invariant symmetric two-index tensor on the …
Correlation functions in perturbative N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory are examined in the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) limit. We demonstrate that non-extremal four-point functions of chiral primary fields are ill-defined in that limit. This lends support to the assertion that only gauge theoretic two-point functions should be compared to pp-wave strings. We further refine the analysis of the recently discovered non-planar corrections to the planar BMN limit. In particular, a full resolution to the genus one operator mixing problem is presented, leading to modifications in the map be…
We investigate the radial extent of the eigenvalue distribution for Yang-Mills type matrix models. We show that, a three matrix Gaussian model with complex Myers coupling, to leading order in strong coupling is described by commuting matrices whose joint eigenvalue distribution is uniform and confined to a ball of radius R=(3Pi/2g)^(1/3). We then study, perturbatively, a 3-component model with a pure commutator action and find a radial extent broadly consistent with numerical simulations.
Correlators of Wilson loop operators with O_4=Tr(F_{μν}^2+...) are computed in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The results are compared with the leading order perturbative computations. As a consequence of conformal invariance, these correlators have identical forms in the weak and strong coupling limits for circular loops. They are essentially different for contours not protected by conformal symmetry.
We study perturbative aspects of recently proposed integrated four-point correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with all classical gauge groups using standard Feynman diagram computations. We argue that perturbative contributions of the integrated correlators are given by linear combinations of periods of certain conformal Feynman graphs, which were originally introduced for the construction of perturbative loop integrands of the un-integrated correlator. This observation allows us to evaluate the integrated correlators to high loop orders. We explicitly compute one of the in…
The coupling constant dependence of correlation functions of BPS operators in N=4 Yang-Mills can be expressed in terms of integrated correlation functions. We approximate these integrated correlators by using a truncated OPE expansion. This leads to differential equations for the coupling dependence. When applied to a particular sixteen point correlator, the coupling dependence we find agrees with the corresponding amplitude computed via the AdS/CFT correspondence. We conjecture that this truncation becomes exact in the large N and large 't Hooft coupling limit.
In the framework of the semiclassical approach, we compute the normalized structure constants in three-point correlation functions, when two of the vertex operators correspond to heavy string states, while the third vertex corresponds to a light state. This is done for the case when the heavy string states are finite-size giant magnons with one or two angular momenta, and for two different choices of the light state, corresponding to dilaton operator and primary scalar operator. The relevant operators in the dual gauge theory are Tr(F_{μν}^2 Z^j+...) and Tr(Z^j). We first consider the case of …
We compute the leading finite-size effects on the normalized structure constants in semiclassical three-point correlation functions of two finite-size giant magnon string states and three different types of "light" states - primary scalar operators, dilaton operator with nonzero momentum and singlet scalar operators on higher string levels. This is done for the case of TsT-transformed, or gamma-deformed, AdS_5 x S^5 string theory background, dual to N = 1 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions, arising as an exactly marginal deformation of N = 4 super Yang-Mills.
We study the real time correlators of scalar glueball operators for Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature in flat space. The analytic structure of the frequency space propagator in perturbative field theory is seen to be qualitatively different to the strong coupling results that may be obtained from perturbations about AdS black hole spacetimes: we find branch cuts rather than poles. This difference appears to persist away from the strict zero and infinite coupling limits, possibly suggesting a phase transition in large N thermal N = 4 SYM theory as a function of the 't Hooft coupling.
We study at perturbative level the correlation functions of a general class of 1/8 BPS Wilson loops and chiral primaries in N = 4 Super Yang-Mills theory. The contours and the location of operator insertions share a sphere S^2 embedded into spacetime and the system preserves at least two supercharges. We perform explicit two-loop computations, for some particular but still rather general configuration, that confirm the elegant results expected from localization procedure. We find notably full consistency with the multi-matrix model averages, obtained from 2D Yang-Mills theory on the sphere, wh…
Correlation functions of the FF and F\tilde{F} operators in hot SU(3) Yang-Mills theory have recently been studied both on the lattice and in perturbation theory, and the results subsequently compared to the strong coupling limit of large-N_c N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory, available through the AdS/CFT correspondence. Here, we review the perturbative calculations, covering both Euclidean spatial correlators and the UV limit of spectral densities, and comment on the emerging physical picture as well as on possible extensions of the present studies.
We derive an action describing edge dynamics on interfaces for gauge theories (Maxwell and Yang-Mills) using the path integral. The canonical structure of the edge theory is deduced and the thermal partition function calculated. We test the edge action in several applications. For Maxwell in Rindler space, we recover earlier results, now embedded in a dynamical canonical framework. A second application is 2d Yang-Mills theory where the boundary action becomes just the particle-on-a-group action. Correlators of boundary-anchored Wilson lines in 2d Yang-Mills are matched with, and identified as …
We study the correlator of chiral primary operators in $\Ncal$=4 super Yang-Mills theory in large $N$ limit. Through the free fermion picture, we map the gauge group rank and R-charges in SYM to the Fermi level and tachyon momenta, respectively, in the c=1 matrix model. By doing so, it is seen that half-BPS correlators are reproduced by tree-level tachyon scattering amplitudes.
We study the two circular Wilson loop correlator in which one is of anti-symmetric representation, while the other is of fundamental representation in 4-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. This correlator has a good AdS dual, which is a system of a D5-brane and a fundamental string. We calculated the on-shell action of the string, and clarified the Gross-Ooguri transition in this correlator. Some limiting cases are also examined.
Using the simple path integral method we calculate the $n$-point functions of field strength of Yang-Mills theories on arbitrary two-dimensional Riemann surfaces. In $U(1)$ case we show that the correlators consist of two parts , a free and an $x$-independent part. In the case of non-abelian semisimple compact gauge groups we find the non-gauge invariant correlators in Schwinger-Fock gauge and show that it is also divided to a free and an almost $x$-independent part. We also find the gauge-invariant Green functions and show that they correspond to a free field theory.
The N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory in 1+1 dimensions is solved at strong coupling to directly confirm the predictions of supergravity at weak coupling. The calculations are done in the large-N_c approximation using Supersymmetric Discrete Light-Cone Quantization. The stress-energy correlator is obtained as a function of the separation r; for intermediate values of r, the correlator behaves in a manner consistent with the 1/r^5 behavior predicted by weak-coupling supergravity.
Four-point functions of R-currents are discussed within Anti-de Sitter supergravity. In particular, we compute Witten diagrams with graviton and gauge boson exchange in the high energy Regge limit. Assuming validity of the AdS/CFT correspondence, our results apply to R-current four-point functions of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling.
