The present paper represents an attempt for a very generic string inspired theory of gravitation, based on a stringy action in the teleparallel gravity which includes a specific functional which depends on the scalar field and its kinetic energy, as well as the torsion and boundary terms, embedding also possible effects from the teleparallel Gauss--Bonnet invariants. We focus our study on FLRW cosmology. After we deduce the cosmological equations for the associated generic theory of gravitation, we focus on string inspired couplings which are studied by considering different analytical techniques. The first analytical technique is based on the linear stability theory, by introducing proper dimensionless variables which enables us to study the structure of the phase space and the associated physical effects. In this case, we have obtained different cosmological solutions which correspond to matter and dark energy dominated solutions, achieving a possible transition between matter and dark energy dominated epochs. For each type of cosmological solutions, we have discussed the corresponding physical features, attaining viable constraints for the coupling constants due to dynamical effects. The dynamical study of the physical features included also a numerical analysis by fine--tuning the initial conditions deep into the matter era, obtaining possible trajectories for the effective equation of state for specific coupling functions.
We consider the cosmology derived from $f(T,B)$ gravity where $T$ is the torsion scalar and $B=\frac{2}{e}\partial_μ(e T^μ)$ a boundary term. In particular we discuss how it is possible to recover, under the same standard, the teleparallel $f(T)$ gravity, the curvature $f(R)$ gravity and the teleparallel-curvature $f(R,T)$ gravity, which are particular cases of $f(T,B)$. We adopt the Noether Symmetry Approach to study the related dynamical systems and to find out cosmological solutions.
We discuss conformal issues of pure and extended teleparallel gravity. In particular, we present formulations of conformal transformation in teleparallel gravity. Furthermore, we propose conformal scalar and gauge field theories in teleparallel gravity and study conformal torsion gravity. We explicitly demonstrate that a power-law acceleration (including the $Λ$CDM universe) as well as the de Sitter expansion of the universe can be realized in extended teleparallel gravity with a conformal scalar field, and that pure teleparallel gravity with a conformal scalar field can lead to the $Λ$CDM mod…
We consider f(Q) extended symmetric teleparallel cosmologies, where Q is the non-metricity scalar, and constrain its functional form through the order reduction method. By using this technique, we are able to reduce and integrate the field equations and thus to select the corresponding models giving rise to bouncing cosmology. The selected Lagrangian is then used to develop the Hamiltonian formalism and to obtain the Wave Function of the Universe which suggests that classical observable universes can be recovered according to the Hartle Criterion.
We consider the cosmology of a brane-world scenario in the framework of teleparallel and $f(T)$ gravity in a way that matter is localized on the brane. We show that the cosmology of such branes is different from the standard cosmology in teleparallelism. In particular, we obtain a class of new solutions with a constant five-dimensional radius and cosmologically evolving brane in the context of constant torsion $f(T)$ gravity.
A generalized teleparallel cosmological model, $f(T_\mathcal{G},T)$, containing the torsion scalar $T$ and the teleparallel counterpart of the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant $T_{\mathcal{G}}$, is studied in the framework of the Noether Symmetry Approach. As $f(\mathcal{G}, R)$ gravity, where $\mathcal{G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant and $R$ is the Ricci curvature scalar, exhausts all the curvature information that one can construct from the Riemann tensor, in the same way, $f(T_\mathcal{G},T)$ contains all the possible information directly related to the torsion tensor. In th…
In teleparallel gravity, we apply Lorenz type gauge fixing to cope with redundant degrees of freedom in the vierbein field. This condition is mainly to restore the Lorentz symmetry of the teleparallel torsion scalar. In cosmological application, this technique provides standard cosmology, turnaround, bounce or $Λ$CDM as separate scenarios. We reconstruct the $f(T)$ gravity which generates these models. We study the stability of the solutions by analyzing the corresponding phase portraits. Also, we investigate Lorenz gauge in the unimodular coordinates, it leads to unify a nonsingular bounce an…
Well-tempering is a promising classical method of dynamically screening an arbitrarily large vacuum energy and generating a late-time, low energy de Sitter vacuum state. In this paper, we study for the first time self-tuning in teleparallel gravity and obtain well-tempered cosmological models in the teleparallel gravity analogue of Horndeski theory. This broadens the scope of well-tempered cosmology and teases the potentially far richer cosmological dynamics that could be anchored on teleperallel gravity. We expand the well-tempered recipe to its most general form so far and use it to search f…
We apply the Noether Symmetry Approach to point-like teleparallel Lagrangians in view to derive minisuperspaces suitable for Quantum Cosmology. Adopting the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism, we find out related Wave Functions of the Universe. Specifically, by means of appropriate changes of variables suggested by the existence of Noether symmetries, it is possible to obtain the cosmological Hamiltonians whose solutions are classical trajectories interpretable as observable universes.
Even though it is not possible to differentiate General Relativity from Teleparallel Gravity using classical experiments, it could be possible to discriminate between them by quantum gravitational effects. These effects have motivated the introduction of nonlocal deformations of General Relativity, and similar effects are also expected to occur in Teleparallel Gravity. Here, we study nonlocal deformations of Teleparallel Gravity along with its cosmological solutions. We observe that Nonlocal Teleparallel Gravity (like nonlocal General Relativity) is consistent with the present cosmological dat…
A quantum cosmology in teleparallel gravity is presented in this article. Teleparallel gravity is used to perform such an analysis once in General Relativity (GR) the concept of gravitational energy is misleading preventing the establishment of a concise quantum cosmology. The Wheeler-DeWitt like equation is obtained using the Weyl quantization and the teleparallel expression of energy.
Symmetric teleparallel gravity (STG) is an alternative description of the gravitational field as an effect of the nonmetricity rather than the curvature of the spacetime. For an specific choice of the symmetric teleparallel lagrangian, the STG dynamics is equivalent to the general relativity (GR), and it is called Symmetric teleparallel equivalent to general relativity (STEGR). We propose a local Lorentz violating dynamics in the gravitational sector in the STEGR framework. The Lorentz violation is trigged by the vacuum expectation value (vev) of the well-known bumblebee field, whose vev coupl…
We study the cosmological perturbations in teleparallel dark energy models in which there is a dynamical scalar field with a non-minimal coupling to gravity. We find that the propagating degrees of freedom are the same as in quintessence cosmology despite that variables of the perturbed vierbein field are greater than those in metric theories. We numerically show some evident discrepancy from general relativity in the evolutions of the perturbations on all scales of the universe. We also demonstrate that the gravitational interactions are enhanced during the unique tracker evolutions in these …
We consider curvature-teleparallel $F(R,T)$ gravity, where the gravitational Lagrangian density is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar $R$ and the torsion scalar $T$. Using the Noether Symmetry Approach, we show that the functional form of the $F(R, T)$ function, can be determined by the presence of symmetries . Furthermore, we obtain exact solutions through to the presence of conserved quantities and the reduction of cosmological dynamical system. Example of particular cosmological models are considered.
In this paper we propose a new dark energy model in the teleparallel alternative of general relativity, by considering a generalized non--minimal coupling of a tachyonic scalar field with the teleparallel boundary term. Within the framework of teleparallel gravity, the boundary coupling term is associated with the divergence of the torsion vector. Considering the linear stability technique for various potentials and couplings, we have analyzed the dynamical properties of the present tachyonic dark energy model in the phase space, uncovering the corresponding essential dynamical features. Our s…
We apply the teleparallelism condition to the Poincaré gauge theory of gravity. The resultant teleparallelized cosmology is completely equivalent to the Friedmann cosmology derived from Einstein's general theory of relativity. The torsion is shown to play the role of the cosmological constant driving the cosmic acceleration. We then extend such theory to include the effect of spin and explore the possibility of accounting for the current accelerating universe by a spinning dark energy.
Teleparallel gravity has significantly increased in popularity in recent decades, bringing attention to Einstein's other theory of gravity. In this Review, we relate this form of geometry to the broader metric-affine approach to forming gravitational theories where we describe a systematic way of constructing consistent teleparallel theories that respect certain physical conditions such as local Lorentz invariance. We first use teleparallel gravity to formulate a teleparallel equivalent of general relativity which is dynamically equivalent to general relativity but which may have different beh…
The exploration of teleparallel gravity has been done from a dynamical systems point of view in order to be tested against the cosmological evolution currently observed. So far, the proposed autonomous systems have been restrictive over a constant dynamical variable, which contains information related to the dynamics on the $H_0$ value. It is therefore that in this paper we consider a generalization of the dynamical system by imposing a nonconstant degree of freedom over it which allows us to rewrite a generic autonomous dynamical analysis. We describe the treatment of our nonlinear autonomous…
We study tensor perturbations around the most general cosmologically symmetric backgrounds in a class of teleparallel gravity theories known as New General Relativity. These theories comprise a one-parameter class, which is fully consistent with observations at the post-Newtonian level, and which contains the teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity as a special case. We find that for a particular class of cosmological background geometries these theories exhibit gravitational wave birefringence and dispersion, i.e., the dispersion relation for gravitational waves depends on their polariz…
We present a class of cosmological solutions for a generalized teleparallel gravity with, $f(T)=T+\tildeα(-T)^n$, where $\tildeα$ is some parameter and $n$ is an integer or half-integer. Choosing $\tildeα \sim G^{n-1}$, where $G$ is the gravitational constant, and working with an equation of state $p=w\, ρ$, one obtains a cosmological solution with multiple branches. The dynamics of the solution describes standard cosmology at late times, but the higher-torsion correction changes the nature of the initial singularity from big bang to a sudden singularity. The milder behavior of the sudden sing…
We discuss an extended Teleparallel gravity models comprising functions of scalar invariants constructed by torsion, torsion Gauss-Bonnet and boundary terms. We adopt the Noether Symmetry Approach to select the functional forms, the first integrals and, eventually, the exact solutions of the dynamics in the context of flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmology. Standard perfect fluid matter, minimally coupled to geometry, is considered. Several physically consistent models are derived with related exact solutions.
We consider the most general teleparallel theory of gravity whose action is a linear combination of the five scalar invariants which are quadratic in the torsion tensor. Since two of these invariants possess odd parity, they naturally allow for a coupling to pseudo-scalar fields, thus yielding a Lagrangian which is even under parity transformations. In analogy to similar fields in gauge theories, we call these pseudo-scalar fields \emph{teleparallel axions}. For the most general coupling of a single axion field, we derive the cosmological field equations. We find that for a family of cosmologi…
Symmetric teleparallel gravity theories, in which the gravitational interaction is attributed to the nonmetricity of a flat, symmetric, but not metric-compatible affine connection, have been a topic of growing interest in recent studies. Numerous works study the cosmology of symmetric teleparallel gravity assuming a flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric, while working in the so-called "coincident gauge", further assuming that the connection coefficients vanish. However, little attention has been paid to the fact that both of these assumptions rely on the freedom to choose a particula…
We focus on viable $f(T)$ teleparallel cosmological models, namely power law, exponential and square-root exponential, carrying out a detailed study of their evolution at all scales. Indeed, these models were extensively analysed in the light of late time measurements, while it is possible to find only upper limits looking at the very early time behavior, i.e. satisfying the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) data on primordial abundance of ${}^4He$. Starting from these indications, we perform our analysis considering both background and linear perturbations evolution and constrain, beyond the sta…
We consider a general theory of all possible quadratic, first-order derivative terms of the non-metricity tensor in the framework of Symmetric Teleparallel Geometry. We apply the Noether Symmetry Approach to classify those models that are invariant under point transformations in a cosmological background and we use the symmetries of these models to reduce the dynamics of the system in order to find analytical solutions.
We consider the spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker space time in the teleparallel model of gravity and assume that the universe is filled nearly by cold dark matter and a nonminimally coupled scalar field with a power-law potential as dark energy. We investigate the possibility that the universe undergoes a transition from quintessence to phantom phase. An analytical solution for the scalar field is obtained and necessary conditions required for such a transition are discussed.
In the teleparallel framework of cosmology, a quintessence with non-minimal couplings to the scalar torsion and a boundary term is considered. A conformal coupling to matter density is also taken into account. It is shown that the model can describe the onset of cosmic acceleration after an epoch of matter dominated era, where dark energy is negligible, via $Z_2$ symmetry breaking. While the conformal coupling holds the Universe in a state with zero dark energy density in the early epoch, the non-minimal couplings lead the Universe to a stable state with de Sitter expansion at the late time.
In this paper, we investigate $f(T)$ cosmology and find an exact solution for $f$ which gives a Little Rip cosmology. Also, considering accelerating cosmology with dark matter, the time-dependent solution is found. For these cases, by using solutions obtained from $f(T)$ gravity we find expressions for $ω$ and $Λ$ defined as time functions via equivalent description in terms of inhomogeneous fluid. This puts the question: which theoretical model describes the observational cosmology?
It has been shown that at the semi-classical order, gravitational theories with quantum fluctuations can be effectively recast as modified theories of gravity with non-minimal gravity-matter couplings. We proceed from an observational perspective and see whether such quantum fluctuations can leave imprints on the late Universe. Within the teleparallel formulation, we investigate a representative model in this general class of modified gravitational theories inlaid with quantum fluctuations, and determine the cosmological parameters by using compiled late-time data sets. Furthermore, we assess …
We propose a model-independent formalism to numerically solve the modified Friedmann equations in the framework of $f(T)$ teleparallel cosmology. Our strategy is to expand the Hubble parameter around the redshift $z=0$ up to a given order and to adopt cosmographic bounds as initial settings to determine the corresponding $f(z)\equiv f(T(H(z)))$ function. In this perspective, we distinguish two cases: the first expansion is up to the jerk parameter, the second expansion is up to the snap parameter. We show that inside the observed redshift domain $z\leq1$, only the net strength of $f(z)$ is mod…
We formulate mimetic theory in f(T) teleparallel gravity where T is torsion scalar. It is shown that the construction of the mimetic theory in the teleparallel gravity requires the vierbeins to be left unchanged and the confomal transformation performed on the Minkowski metric of the tangent space. It is further argued that the conformal degree of freedom in this teleparallel mimetic theory becomes dynamical and mimics the behavior of cold dark matter. We also show that it is possible to employ the Lagrange multipliers method to formulate the mimetic theory in an f(T) theory without any auxili…
Teleparallel Horndeski theory offers an avenue through which to circumvent the speed constraint of gravitational waves in an efficient manner. However, this provides an even larger plethora of models due to the increase in action terms. In this work we explore these models in the context of cosmological systems. Using Noether point symmetries, we classify the dynamical systems that emerge from Teleparallel Horndeski cosmologies. This approach is very effective at selecting specific models in the general class of second-order Teleparallel scalar-tensor theories, as well as for deriving exact so…
Assuming a spatially flat universe, we study the cosmological viability of an infrared corrected teleparallel gravity model, which accounts for late acceleration by weakening gravity at later times on cosmological distances. The theory does not introduce any additional free parameters into the cosmological model, as is commonly the case with modified gravity based cosmologies. This feature renders the cosmological model statistically comparable, on equal footing, with $Λ$CDM. In this context, using recent cosmological observations -- Pantheon supernova Type Ia, Hubble constant $H_0$, Baryon ac…
Cosmological perturbations in Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) are usually studied incorporating either holonomy corrections, where the Ashtekar connection is replaced by a suitable sinus function in order to have a well-defined quantum analogue, or inverse-volume corrections coming from the eigenvalues of the inverse-volume operator. In this paper we will develop an alternative approach to calculate cosmological perturbations in LQC based on the fact that, holonomy corrected LQC in the flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometry could be also obtained as a particular case of telepara…
Statefinder diagnostic is a convenient method that can differentiate between the various dark energy models. In this article, we analyze the statefinder parameters in symmetric teleparallel cosmology. The $f(Q)$ gravity theory is an alternative theory to GR, where gravitational interactions attribute to the non-metricity scalar $Q$. In the present work, we consider two $f(Q)$ models which contains a linear and a non-linear form of non-metricity scalar, specifically, $f(Q)=αQ + \fracβ{Q}$ and $f(Q)=αQ + βQ^2$, where $α$ and $β$ are free parameters and then statefinder parameters $(r,s)$ are eva…
Recently, some authors have removed the big bang singularity in teleparallel Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) and have shown that the universe may undergo a number of oscillations. We investigate the origin of this type of teleparallel theory in a system of intersecting branes in M-theory in which the angle between them changes with time. This system is constructed by two intersecting anti-D8-branes, one compacted D4-brane and the other a D3-brane. These branes are built by joining M0-branes which develop in decaying fundamental strings. The compacted D4-brane is located between two intersecting a…
The existence of self-similar solutions is discussed in symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$-theory for a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background geometry with zero and non-zero spatial curvature. For the four distinct families of connections which describe the specific cosmology in symmetric teleparallel gravity, the functional form of $f(Q)$ is reconstructed. Finally, to see if the analogy with General Relativity holds, we discuss the relation of the self-similar solutions with the asymptotic behaviour of more general $f(Q)$ functions.
In this paper, we have shown the matter bounce scenario of the Universe in an extended symmetric teleparallel gravity, the f(Q) gravity. Motivated from the bouncing scenario and loop quantum cosmology (LQC), the form of the function $f(Q)$ has been obtained at the backdrop of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson Walker (FLRW) space time. Considering the background cosmology dominated by dust fluid, the e-folding parameter has been expressed, which contains the nonmetricity term. Since the slow roll criterion in the bouncing context is not valid, we used a conformal equivalence between f(Q) and scalar-…
The parity violating gravity models based on the symmetric teleparallel gravity have been considered in the literature, but their applications in cosmology and especially the modifications to cosmological perturbations have not been fully explored. In this paper we consider such a simple model which modifies general relativity by a parity non-conserved coupling, within the framework of the symmetric teleparallel gravity. We study in detail its cosmological applications and focus on its cosmological perturbation theory. Besides the already known parity violation in the tensor perturbations, we …
We study teleparallel gravitational theories with are invariant under the conformal transformations. Wide family of the gravitational Lagrangians that are invariant under conformal transformations have investigated. Cosmological solutions inspired by the observational data for a flat Universe in the vacuum has been found. To add matter fields to the cosmological models by preserving the conformal symmetry there are significant limitations. Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) equations based on the effective terms of energy density and pressure have been rewriting and continuity equation for the e…
Over the past decades, the role of torsion in gravity has been extensively investigated along the main direction of bringing gravity closer to its gauge formulation and incorporating spin in a geometric description. Here we review various torsional constructions, from teleparallel, to Einstein-Cartan, and metric-affine gauge theories, resulting in extending torsional gravity in the paradigm of f(T) gravity, where f(T) is an arbitrary function of the torsion scalar. Based on this theory, we further review the corresponding cosmological and astrophysical applications. In particular, we study cos…
Late time cosmic acceleration may be achieved by modifying gravity on large scales. This should also have consequences on the evolution of perturbations. We thus extend our study of exponential infrared $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity to examine the viability of the theory at the linear perturbation level, evaluating the full CMB and matter power spectra. As the theory does not introduce extra free parameters, it fits within the minimal six parameter space of standard $Λ$CDM. Using Planck 2018 CMB (TT+TE+EE+lensing) alone, best fits predict those parameters to be almost identical to $Λ$CDM, with s…
The study of cosmological perturbation theory in $f(T)$ gravity is a topic of great interest in teleparallel gravity since this is one of the simplest generalizations of the theory that modifies the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity. In this work, we explore the possibility of a non-flat FLRW background solution and perform perturbations for positively as well as negatively curved spatial geometries, together with a comparison to the flat case. We determine the generalized behaviour of the perturbative modes for this non-flat FLRW setting for arbitrary $f(T)$ models, when the most …
We discuss linear perturbations of the most general class of teleparallel spacetimes with cosmological symmetry, and perform a decomposition of these perturbations into irreducible components. We then study their behavior under gauge transformations, i.e., infinitesimal diffeomorphisms of the background spacetime, and derive a full set of gauge-invariant perturbation variables. Comparing our results with perturbations around the diagonal tetrad corresponding to a spatially flat teleparallel background cosmology, we see the appearance of new terms which depend on the particular choice of a cosm…
In this paper, we have examined the recently proposed modified symmetric teleparallel gravity, in which gravitational Lagrangian is given by an arbitrary function of non-metricity scalar $Q$. We have considered a constant jerk parameter to express the Hubble rate. Moreover, we have used 31 points of OHD datasets and 1701 points of Pantheon+ datasets to constraint our model parameters by means of the Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis. The mean values and the best fit obtained give a consistent Hubble rate and deceleration parameter compared to the observation values. In order to study the curre…
We explore an extension of the symmetric teleparallel gravity denoted the $f(Q)$ theory, by considering a function of the nonmetricity invariant $Q$ as the gravitational Lagrangian. Some interesting properties could be found in the $f(Q)$ theory by comparing with the $f(R)$ and $f(T)$ theories. The field equations are derived in the $f(Q)$ theory. The cosmological application is investigated. In this theory the accelerating expansion is an intrinsic property of the universe geometry without need of either exotic dark energy or extra fields. And the state equation of the geometrical dark energy…
The standard formulation of General Relativity Theory, in the absence of a cosmological constant, is unable to explain the responsible mechanism for the observed late-time cosmic acceleration. On the other hand, by inserting the cosmological constant in Einstein's field equations it is possible to describe the cosmic acceleration, but the cosmological constant suffers from an unprecedented fine-tunning problem. This motivates one to modify Einstein's space-time geometry of General Relativity. The $f(Q)$ modified theory of gravity is an alternative theory to General Relativity, where the non-me…
All degrees of freedom related to the torsion scalar can be explored by analysing, the $f(T,T_G)$ gravity formalism where, $T$ is a torsion scalar and $T_G$ is the teleparallel counterpart of the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant term. The well-known Noether symmetry approach is a useful tool for selecting models that are motivated at a fundamental level and determining the exact solution to a given Lagrangian, hence we explore Noether symmetry approach in $f(T,T_G)$ gravity formalism with three different forms of $f(T,T_G)$ and study how to establish nontrivial Noether vector form for each o…
