This work predicts that individual Bloch points can be created and stabilized by magnetostatic and chiral interactions in nanocuboids, confined in between two chiral bobbers of opposing polarity. The Bloch point can be moved by an external magnetic field of moderate strength but only if the field strength is enough to overcome a pinning potential that results from intrinsic exchange forces and extrinsic surface effects. The Bloch point can be driven by the external field reversibly, in a direction opposing the field, and it remains stable up to moderate field strengths. At a critical field strength the Bloch point escapes through one of the surfaces, leaving behind a collinear magnetization configuration, and upon removing the field a new Bloch point is formed. These findings highlight the topological diversity in nanostructures and show that a Bloch point, despite its zero-dimensionality, couples to external fields via a substantial magnetic volume around it. The control of topological point defects has technological implications with regards to reversibly movable nanomagnetic textures and their associated emergent electrodynamics.
We study the effect of surface anisotropy on the spectrum of spin-wave excitations in a magnetic nanocluster and compute the corresponding absorbed power. For this, we develop a general numerical method based on the (undamped) Landau-Lifshitz equation, either linearized around the equilibrium state leading to an eigenvalue problem or solved using a symplectic technique. For box-shaped clusters, the numerical results are favorably compared to those of the finite-size linear spin-wave theory. Our numerical method allows us to disentangle the contributions of the core and surface spins to the spe…
We report on the synthesis of ferromagnetic cobalt nanocubes of various sizes using thermal pyrolysis method and the effect of shape anisotropy on the static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied. Shape anisotropy of approximately 10 % was introduced in nanocubes by making nanodiscs using a linear chain amine surfactant during synthesis process. It has been observed that, ferromagnetism persisted above room temperature and a sharp drop in magnetic moment at low temperatures in zero-field cooled magnetization may be associated with the spin disorder due to the effective anisotropy presen…
We model the stabilization of clusters and lattices of cuboidal particles with long-ranged magnetic dipolar and short-ranged surface interactions. Two realistic systems were considered: one with magnetization orientated in the [001] crystallographic direction, and the other with magnetization along the [111] direction. We have studied magnetic nanocubes clusters first in the limit of $T=0$~K intending to elucidate the structural genesis of low energy configurations and then analyzed finite-temperature behavior of the same systems in simulations. Our results demonstrate that dipolar coupling ca…
We report on the magnetic hyperthermia properties of chemically synthesized ferromagnetic 11 and 16 nm Fe(0) nanoparticles of cubic shape displaying the saturation magnetization of bulk iron. The specific absorption rate measured on 16 nm nanocubes is 1690+-160 W/g at 300 kHz and 66 mT. This corresponds to specific losses-per-cycle of 5.6 mJ/g, largely exceeding the ones reported in other systems. A way to quantify the degree of optimization of any system with respect to hyperthermia applications is proposed. Applied here, this method shows that our nanoparticles are not fully optimized, proba…
We investigate the dynamical properties of a system of interacting magnetic dipoles disposed in sites of an sc lattice and forming a cubic-shaped sample of size determined by the cube edge length (N-1)a (a being the lattice constant, N representing the number of dipolar planes). The dipolar field resulting from the dipole-dipole interactions is calculated numerically in points of the axis connecting opposite cube face centers (central axis) by collecting individual contributions to this field coming from each of the N atomic planes perpendicular to the central axis. The applied magnetic field …
Switching of magnetic vortex cores involves a topological transition characterized by the presence of a magnetization singularity, a point where the magnetization vanishes (Bloch point). We analytically derive the shape of the Bloch point that is an extremum of the free energy with exchange, dipole and the Landau terms for the determination of the local value of the magnetization modulus.
We identify a mapping between two-dimensional (2D) electron transport in a minimally twisted graphene bilayer and a 1D quantum walk, where one spatial dimension plays the role of time. In this mapping a magnetic field B perpendicular to the bilayer maps onto an electric field. Bloch oscillations due to the periodic motion in a 1D Bloch band can then be observed in purely DC transport as magnetoconductance oscillations with periodicity set by the Bloch frequency.
We study the quantum dynamics of soliton-like domain walls in anisotropic spin-1/2 chains in the presence of magnetic fields. In the absence of fields, domain walls form a Bloch band of delocalized quantum states while a static field applied along the easy axis localizes them into Wannier wave packets and causes them to execute Bloch oscillations, i.e. the domain walls oscillate along the chain with a finite Bloch frequency and amplitude. In the presence of the field, the Bloch band, with a continuum of extended states, breaks up into the Wannier-Zeeman ladder -- a discrete set of equally spac…
Bloch's theorem is the centerpiece of topological band theory, which itself has defined an era of quantum materials research. However, Bloch's theorem is broken by a perpendicular magnetic field, making it difficult to study topological systems in strong flux. For the first time, moiré materials have made this problem experimentally relevant, and its solution is the focus of this work. We construct gauge-invariant irreps of the magnetic translation group at $2π$ flux on infinite boundary conditions, allowing us to give analytical expressions in terms of the Siegel theta function for the magnet…
A product of irreducible representations of magnetic translation group is considered. It leads to irreducible representations which were previously rejected as nonphysical. A very simple example indicates a possible application of these representations. In particular, they are important in descriptions of pairs of electrons in a magnetic field and a periodic potential. The periodicity of some properties with respect to the charge of a particle is briefly discussed.
We study spin-wave excitations in a circular ferromagnetic nanodot in different inhomogeneous, topologically non-trivial magnetization states, specifically, vortex and skyrmion states. Gradual change in the strength of the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction leads to continuous phase transitions between different stable magnetic configurations and allows for mapping of dynamic spin modes in and between the vortex, Bloch-type skyrmion and Néel-type skyrmion states. Our study elucidates the connections between gyrotropic modes, azimuthal spin waves…
From the pioneering work of Winter [Phys. Rev. 124, 452 (1961)], a magnetic domain wall of Bloch type is known to host a special wall-bound spin-wave mode, which corresponds to spin-waves being channeled along the magnetic texture. Using micromagnetic simulations, we investigate spin-waves travelling inside Bloch walls formed in thin magnetic media with perpendicular-to-plane magnetic anisotropy and we show that their propagation is actually strongly nonreciprocal, as a result of dynamic dipolar interactions. We investigate spin-wave non-reciprocity effects in single Bloch walls, which allows …
We consider the dynamics of a quantum particle held in a lattice potential, and subjected to a time-dependent spin-orbit coupling. Tilting the lattice causes the particle to perform Bloch oscillations, and by suitably changing the Rashba interaction during its motion, the spin of the particle can be gradually rotated. Even if the Rashba coupling can only be altered by a small amount, large spin-rotations can be obtained by accumulating the rotation from successive oscillations. We show how the time-dependence of the spin-orbit coupling can be chosen to maximize the rotation per cycle, and thus…
We study the time evolution of wave packets of noninteracting electrons in a two-dimensional periodic system in the presence of magnetic and electric fields. The model includes consistently the coupling between Landau levels as well as the periodic and external field contributions. It is shown that the electric field produces localization along its longitudinal direction, this effect is a physical consequence of the quantization of the energy levels with respect to the longitudinal quasi-momentum. For incommensurate orientations of $\mathbf{E}$ relative to the lattice the wave packet becomes l…
We study the energy spectrum and the quantized Hall conductance of electrons in a two-dimensional periodic potential with perpendicular magnetic field WITHOUT neglecting the coupling of the Landau bands. Remarkably, even for weak Landau band coupling significant changes in the Hall conductance compared to the one-band approximation of Hofstadter's butterfly are found. The principal deviations are the rearrangement of subbands and unexpected subband contributions to the Hall conductance.
Two-dimensional Bloch electrons in a uniform magnetic field exhibit complex energy spectrum. When static electric and magnetic modulations with a checkerboard pattern are superimposed on the uniform magnetic field, more structures and symmetries of the spectra are found, due to the additional adjustable parameters from the modulations. We give a comprehensive report on these new symmetries. We have also found an electric-modulation induced energy gap, whose magnitude is independent of the strength of either the uniform or the modulated magnetic field. This study is applicable to experimentally…
The temperature dependence of magnetization in ferromagnetic nanostructures (e.g., nanoparticles or nanoclusters) is usually analyzed by means of an empirical extension of the Bloch law sufficiently flexible for a good fitting to the observed data and indicates a strong softening of magnetic coupling compared to the bulk material. We analytically derive a microscopic generalization of the Bloch law for the Heisenberg spin model which takes into account the effects of size, shape and various surface boundary conditions. The result establishes explicit connection to the microscopic parameters an…
We study azimuthal spin-wave (SW) excitations in a circular ferromagnetic nanodot in different inhomogeneous, topologically non-trivial magnetization states, specifically, vortex, Bloch-type skyrmion and Néel-type skyrmion states. Continuous mapping of the SW spectrum between these states is realized with gradual change of the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction (DMI). Our study shows lifting of the SW frequencies degeneracy and change in systematics of the frequency levels. The change is induced by a geometrical Berry phase, that is present for the …
In this letter we calculate the energies corresponding to the different magnetic phases present in a ferromagnetic cylinder by means of analytical calculations. From the comparison of these energies, it is possible to construct magnetic phase diagrams as a function of the uniaxial anisotropy of the sample and the external magnetic field applied. As proof of concept, we analyzed the magnetic phase diagrams for a cobalt dot of 240 nm in diameter and 70 nm in length, with an easy axis parallel to the dot axis, and with a magnetic field applied towards or perpendicular to this axis. From these dia…
Bloch lines are formed to reduce the magnetostatic energy generated by the Bloch walls in uniaxial magnets. Recently, it is reported that Bloch lines play important roles in the emergence and helicity reversal of magnetic bubbles in Sc-substitute M-type hexaferrites (BaFe$_{12-x-0.05}$Sc$_{x}$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$). Although Bloch lines have been discussed on the basis of micromagnetic simulations, the detailed structure was not observed directly. In this study, we investigated the microscopic structures of Bloch lines in BaFe$_{10.35}$Sc$_{1.6}$Mg$_{0.05}$O$_{19}$ uniaxial magnets. Differential…
We study the effect of charge discreteness in a quantum mesoscopic ring wih inductance L. The ring is pierced by a time depending external magnetic field. When the external magnetic flux varies uniformly, the current induced in the ring oscillates with a frequency proportional to the charge discreteness and the flux variation. This phenomenon is very similar to the well known Bloch's oscillation in crystals. The similitude is related to the charge discreteness in the charge-current representation, which plays the same role as the constant lattice in crystals.
The micromagnetic singularity, the so-called Bloch point, can form a metastable state in the nanosphere. We classify possible types of Bloch points and derive analytically the shape of magnetization distribution inside different Bloch point. We show that external gradient field can stabilize the Bloch point: the shape of the Bloch point becomes radial-dependent one and compute the magnetization structure of the nanosphere, which is in a good agrement with performed spin-lattice simulations.
Wide ranging interest in Dirac Hamiltomian is due to the emergence of novel materials, namely, graphene, topological insulators and superconductors, the newly-discovered Weyl semimetals, and still actively-sought after Majorana fermions in real materials. We give a brief review of the relativistic Dirac quantum mechanics and its impact in the developments of modern physics. The quantum band dynamics of Dirac Hamiltonian is crucial in resolving the giant diamagnetism of bismuth and Bi-Sb alloys. Quantitative agreement of the theory with the experiments on Bi-Sb alloys has been achieved, and phy…
Magnetic singularities, also known as magnetic monopoles or Bloch points, represent intriguingphenomena in nanomagnetism. We show that a pair of coupled Bloch points may appear as alocalized, stable state in cubic chiral magnets. Detailed analysis is presented of the stability of suchobjects in the interior of crystals and in geometrically confined systems.
We show that, after a transformation, the dynamics of linear perturbations (spin waves) around a singular Bloch point soliton is formally equivalent to a quantum system of an electron in a magnetic monopole field. The analytical solution to this problem is known and allows us to find the spectrum and the scattering of a wave in a Bloch point field.

We present simulation results on the structure and dynamics of micromagnetic point singularities with atomistic resolution. This is achieved by embedding an atomistic computational region into a standard micromagnetic algorithm. Several length scales are bridged by means of an adaptive mesh refinement and a seamless coupling between the continuum theory and a Heisenberg formulation for the atomistic region. The code operates on graphical processing units and is able to detect and track the position of strongly inhomogeneous magnetic regions. This enables us to reliably simulate the dynamics of…

We investigate Bloch electrons in two dimensions subject to constant electric and magnetic fields. The model that results from our pursuit is governed by a finite difference equation with a quasienergy spectrum that interpolates between a butterfly-like structure and a Stark ladder structure. These findings ensued from the use of electric and magnetic translation operators.
Theoretical investigation demonstrates that the composite bilayer (i.e., chiral-magnetic/ferroelectric bilayer) offers the possibility of electric-induced magnetic Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{94}, 014311 (2016)]. In this Article, we propose a micromagnetic model to physically manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions propagating in a chiral-magnetic thin film with a polarized ferroelectric essential to drive the system through the converse magnetoelectric effect. Effects caused by different velocities of the propagation, sizes of the thin film, and strength of the magnetoelectric couplings stron…
We propose a solution to the problem of Bloch electrons in a homogeneous magnetic field by including the quantum fluctuations of the photon field. A generalized quantum electrodynamical (QED) Bloch theory from first principles is presented. In the limit of vanishing quantum fluctuations we recover the standard results of solid-state physics, for instance, the fractal spectrum of the Hofstadter butterfly. As a further application we show how the well known Landau physics is modified by the photon field and that Landau polaritons emerge. This shows that our QED-Bloch theory does not only allow t…
Magnetic multilayers are promising tuneable systems for hosting magnetic skyrmions at/above room temperature. Revealing their intriguing switching mechanisms and associated inherent electrical responses are prerequisites for developing skyrmionic devices. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate the annihilation of single skyrmions occurring through a multilayer structure, which is mediated by hopping dynamics of topological hedgehog singularities known as Bloch points. The emerging intralayer dynamics of Bloch points are dominated by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and their propagat…
The weak field magnetoresistance has seen a revived interest due to the distinct role played by the momentum-space Berry curvature of Bloch electrons. While most previous studies in this regard focus on the inter-scattering motion of semiclassical Bloch electrons in electromagnetic fields, the intra-scattering effects of the semiclassical dynamics augmented by the Berry curvature, magnetic moment and shift vector on the magnetoresistance have been largely overlooked. Here we uncover that these intra-scattering effects, which are neglected in the field-independent relaxation time approximation …
We investigate a mechanical method to manipulate magnetic Bloch Skyrmions by applying an electric field in a composite chiral-magnetic (CM)/ferroelectric (FE) bilayer. The magnetoelectric coupling at the interface allows the electric field to stimulate magnetic ordering. Therefore it offers the possibility to generate Skyrmions [Phys. Rev. B 94, 014311 (2016)]. Here, we design a movable and localized electric field source to drive skyrmion transport along the bilayer. A traveling velocity of the electric field source must be carefully chosen to show the stability and effciency of this process.…
The current-driven motion of a domain wall (DW) in a ferromagnet with many Bloch lines (BLs) via the spin transfer torque is studied theoretically. It is found that the motion of BLs changes the current-velocity ($j$-$v$) characteristic dramatically. Especially, the critical current density to overcome the pinning force is reduced by the factor of the Gilbert damping coefficient $α$ even compared with that of a skyrmion. This is in sharp contrast to the case of magnetic field driven motion, where the existence of BLs reduces the mobility of the DW.
Spin valves form a key building block in a wide range of spintronic concepts and devices from magnetoresistive read heads to spin-transfer-torque oscillators. We elucidate the dependence of the magnetic damping in the free layer on the angle its equilibrium magnetization makes with that in the fixed layer. The spin pumping-mediated damping is anisotropic and tensorial, with Gilbert- and Bloch-like terms. Our investigation reveals a mechanism for tuning the free layer damping in-situ from negligible to a large value via the orientation of fixed layer magnetization, especially when the magnets a…
Bloch points are magnetic topological defects. The discrete nature of a magnetic lattice creates a periodic potential that can pin a Bloch point. The pinning force is of the order of the exchange constant, a few piconewtons in a typical ferromagnet (permalloy). A domain wall containing a Bloch point can have a sizable depinning field in the tens of oersted.
A formulation for thermal noise in the stochastic form of the Landau Lifshitz Bloch equation used for modeling the magnetization dynamics at elevated temperatures is presented. The diffusion coefficients for thermal fluctuations are obtained via the Fokker-Plank equation using the mean field approximation of the field in defining the free energy. The presented model leads to a mean magnetization consistent with the equilibrium magnetization for small and large particles. The distribution of the magnetization magnitude is of a Poisson-like type rather than the classical Boltzmann distribution. …
Cylindrical nanowires made of soft magnetic materials, in contrast to thin strips, may host domain walls of two distinct topologies. Unexpectedly, we evidence experimentally the dynamic transformation of topology upon wall motion above a field threshold. Micromagnetic simulations highlight the underlying precessional dynamics for one way of the transformation, involving the nucleation of a Bloch-point singularity, however, fail to reproduce the reverse process. This rare discrepancy between micromagnetic simulations and experiments raises fascinating questions in material and computer science.
We study the phenomenon of wave packet revivals of Bloch electrons and explore how to control them by a magnetic field for quantum information transfer. It is showed that the single electron system can be modulated into a linear dispersion regime by the "quantized" flux and then an electronic wave packet with the components localized in this regime can be transferred without spreading. This feature can be utilized to perform the high-fidelity transfer of quantum information encoded in the polarization of the spin. Beyond the linear approximation, the re-localization and self-interference occur…
Three-dimensional topological textures have become a topic of intense interest in recent years. Through analytical calculations, this work determines the magnetostatic field produced by a Bloch Point (BP) singularity confined in a magnetic nanosphere. It is observed that BPs hosted in a nanosphere generate magnetic fields with quadrupolar nature. This finding is interesting because it shows the possibility of obtaining quadrupole magnetic fields with just one magnetic particle, unlike other propositions considering arrays of magnetic elements to generate this kind of field. The obtained magnet…
Skyrmionic textures are being extensively investigated due to the occurrence of novel topological magnetic phenomena and their promising applications in a new generation of spintronic devices that take advantage of the robust topological stability of their spin structures. The development of practical devices relies on a detailed understanding of how skyrmionic structures can be formed, transferred, detected and annihilated. In this work, our considerations go beyond static skyrmions and theoretically show that the formation/annihilation of both skyrmions and antiskyrmions is enabled by the tr…
