We propose categories of $1$-dimensional and multi-dimensional quantum walks. In the categories, an object is a quantum walk, and a morphism is an intertwining operator between two quantum walks. The new framework enables us to discuss quantum walks in a unified way. The purposes of this paper are the following: (1) We reinterpret known results in our new framework. (2) We show several new theorems. For example, it is proved that every space-homogeneous time-periodic analytic quantum walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ has a limit distribution of velocity for every initial unit vector. Analyticity is a very weak condition. (3) We ask whether there exists a continuous-time quantum walk $(V^{(t)})_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$ which realizes a given discrete-time quantum walk $U$. Existence of $(V^{(t)})_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$ is equivalent to that of a $1$-parameter group of automorphisms $(V^{(t)})_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$ from the object $U$ to $U$.
The subject of this paper is a kind of dynamical systems called quantum walks. We study one-dimensional homogeneous analytic quantum walks U. We explain how to identify the space of all the uniform intertwining operators between these walks. We can also determine whether U can be realized by a (not necessarily homogeneous) continuous-time uniform quantum walk on Z. Several examples of quantum walks, which can not be realized by continuous-time uniform quantum walks, are presented. The 4-state Grover walk is one of them. Before stating the main theorems, we clarify the definition of one-dimensi…
The quantum walks in the lattice spaces are represented as unitary evolutions. We find a generator for the evolution and apply it to further understand the walks. We first extend the discrete time quantum walks to continuous time walks. Then we construct the quantum Markov semigroup for quantum walks and characterize it in an invariant subalgebra. In the meanwhile, we obtain the limit distributions of the quantum walks in one-dimension with a proper scaling, which was obtained by Konno by a different method.
We clarify that coined quantum walk is determined by only the choice of local quantum coins. To do so, we characterize coined quantum walks on graph by disjoint Euler circles with respect to symmetric arcs. In this paper, we introduce a new class of coined quantum walk by a special choice of quantum coins determined by corresponding quantum graph, called quantum graph walk. We show that a stationary state of quantum graph walk describes the eigenfunction of the quantum graph.
This study investigated the unitary equivalent classes of one-dimensional quantum walks. We determined the unitary equivalent classes of one-dimensional quantum walks, two-phase quantum walks with one defect, complete two-phase quantum walks, one-dimensional quantum walks with one defect and translation-invariant one-dimensional quantum walks. The unitary equivalent classes of one-dimensional quantum walks with initial states were also considered.
This study investigates unitary equivalent classes of one-dimensional quantum walks. We prove that one-dimensional quantum walks are unitary equivalent to quantum walks of Ambainis type and that translation-invariant one-dimensional quantum walks are Szegedy walks. We also present a necessary and sufficient condition for a one-dimensional quantum walk to be a Szegedy walk.
We consider the time-independent scattering theory for time evolution operators of one-dimensional two-state quantum walks. The scattering matrix associated with the position-dependent quantum walk naturally appears in the asymptotic behavior at spatial infinity of generalized eigenfunctions. The asymptotic behavior of generalized eigenfunctions is a consequence of an explicit expression of the Green function associated with the free quantum walk. When the position-dependent quantum walk is a finite rank perturbation of the free quantum walk, we derive a kind of combinatorial constructions of …
We propose an intermediate walk continuously connecting an open quantum random walk and a quantum walk with parameters $M\in \mathbb{N}$ controlling a decoherence effect; if $M=1$, the walk coincides with an open quantum random walk, while $M=\infty$, the walk coincides with a quantum walk. We define a measure which recovers usual probability measures on $\mathbb{Z}$ for $M=\infty$ and $M=1$ and we observe intermediate behavior through numerical simulations for varied positive values $M$. In the case for $M=2$, we analytically show that a typical behavior of quantum walks appears even in a sma…
We connect the Grover walk with sinks to the Grover walk with tails. The survival probability of the Grover walk with sinks in the long time limit is characterized by the centered generalized eigenspace of the Grover walk with tails. The centered eigenspace of the Grover walk is the attractor eigenspace of the Grover walk with sinks. It is described by the persistent eigenspace of the underlying random walk whose support has no overlap to the boundaries of the graph and combinatorial flow in the graph theory.
Quantum walks, the quantum mechanical counterpart of classical random walks, is an advanced tool for building quantum algorithms that has been recently shown to constitute a universal model of quantum computation. Quantum walks is now a solid field of research of quantum computation full of exciting open problems for physicists, computer scientists, mathematicians and engineers. In this paper we review theoretical advances on the foundations of both discrete- and continuous-time quantum walks, together with the role that randomness plays in quantum walks, the connections between the mathematic…
The subject of this paper is quantum walks, which are expected to simulate several kinds of quantum dynamical systems. In this paper, we define analyticity for quantum walks on Z. Almost all the quantum walks on $\mathbb{Z}$ which have been already studied are analytic. In the framework of analytic quantum walks, we can enlarge the theory of quantum walks. We obtain not only several generalizations of known results, but also new types of theorems. It is proved that every analytic space-homogeneous quantum walk on Z is essentially a composite of shift operators and continuous-time analytic spac…
In this expository note, we discuss spatially inhomogeneous quantum walks in one dimension and describe a genre of mathematical methods that enables one to translate information about the time-independent eigenvalue equation for the unitary generator into dynamical estimates for the corresponding quantum walk. To illustrate the general methods, we show how to apply them to a 1D coined quantum walk whose coins are distributed according to an element of the Thue--Morse subshift.
In this paper, we consider the quantum walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ with attachment of one-length path periodically. This small modification to $\mathbb{Z}$ provides localization of the quantum walk. The eigenspace causing this localization is generated by finite length round trip paths. We find that the localization is due to the eigenvalues of an underlying random walk. Moreover we find that the transience of the underlying random walk provides a slow down of the pseudo velocity of the induced quantum walk and a different limit distribution from the Konno distribution.
We study the discrete-time quantum walk in one-dimension governed by the Fibonacci transformation .We show localization does not occur for the Fibonacci quantum walk by investigating the stationary distribution of the walk, in addition, we obtain the weak limit theorem.
Since a limit distribution of a discrete-time quantum walk on the line was derived in 2002, a lot of limit theorems for quantum walks with a localized initial state have been reported. On the other hand, in quantum probability theory, there are four notions of independence (free, monotone, commuting, and boolean independence) and quantum central limit theorems associated to each independence have been investigated. The relation between quantum walks and quantum probability theory is still unknown. As random walks are fundamental models in the Kolmogorov probability theory, can the quantum walk…
This study investigates the unitary equivalence of split-step quantum walks (SSQW). We consider a new class of quantum walks which includes all SSQWs. We show the explicit form of quantum walks in this class, and clarify their unitary equivalence classes. Unitary equivalence classes of Suzuki's SSQW are also given.
We show that discrete-time quantum walks on the line, $\mathbb{Z}$, behave as "the quantum tunneling". In particular, quantum walkers can tunnel through a double-well with the transmission probability $1$ under a mild condition. This is a property of quantum walks which cannot be seen on classical random walks, and is different from both linear spreadings and localizations.
Quantum Bernoulli noises are annihilation and creation operators acting on Bernoulli functionals, which satisfy the canonical anti-commutation relations (CAR) in equal-time. In this paper, we use quantum Bernoulli noises to introduce a model of open quantum walk on the $d$-dimensional integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for a general positive integer $d\geq 2$, which we call the $d$-dimensional open QBN walk. We obtain a quantum channel representation of the $d$-dimensional open QBN walk, and find that it admits the ``separability-preserving'' property. We prove that, for a wide range of choices of…
The limit theorems of discrete- and continuous-time quantum walks on the line have been intensively studied. We show a relation among limit distributions of quantum walks, Heun differential equations and Gauss differential equations. Indeed, we derive the second-order Fucksian differential equations which limit density functions of quantum walks satisfy. Moreover, using both differential equations, we discuss a relationship between discrete- and continuous-time quantum walks. Taking suitable limit, we can transform a Heun equation obtained from the limit density function of the discrete-time q…
We give a new determinant expression for the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a quantum graph G. Also, we give a decomposition formula for the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a regular covering of G. Furthermore, we define an L-function of G, and give a determinant expression of it. As a corollary, we express the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a regular covering of G by means of its L-functions. As an application, we introduce three types of quantum graph walks, and treat their relation.
The aim of this article is to relate the discrete quantum walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ with the continuous Schrödinger operator on $\mathbb{R}$ in the scattering problem. Each point of $\mathbb{Z}$ is associated with a barrier of the potential, and the coin operator of the quantum walk is determined by the transfer matrix between bases of WKB solutions on the classically allowed regions of both sides of the barrier. This correspondence enables us to represent each entry of the scattering matrix of the Schrödinger operator as a countable sum of probability amplitudes associated with the paths of the qu…
Classical and quantum walks on some finite paths are introduced. It is shown that these walks have explicit solutions given in terms of exceptional Krawtchouk polynomials and their properties are explored. In particular, fractional revival is shown to take place in the corresponding quantum walks.
We consider the Grover walk on infinite trees from the view point of spectral analysis. From the previous works, infinite regular trees provide localization. In this paper, we give the complete characterization of the eigenspace of this Grover walk, which involves localization of its behavior and recovers the previous works. Our result suggests that the Grover walk on infinite trees may be regarded as a limit of the quantum walk induced by the isotropic random walk with the Dirichlet boundary condition at the $n$-th depth rather than one with the Neumann boundary condition.
The discrete time quantum walk defined as a quantum-mechanical analogue of the discrete time random walk have recently been attracted from various and interdisciplinary fields. In this review, the weak limit theorem, that is, the asymptotic behavior, of the one-dimensional discrete time quantum walk is analytically shown. From the limit distribution of the discrete time quantum walk, the discrete time quantum walk can be taken as the quantum dynamical simulator of some physical systems.
Quantum random walks, - coined, lattice ones, - exhibit ballistic behavior with fascinating asymptotic patterns of the amplitudes. We show that averaging over the coins (using the Haar measure), these patterns blend into a spline. Also, we discuss the localizations of such quantum random walks, and establish some strong constraints on the achievable speeds.
We study the motion of M particles performing a quantum walk on the line. Under various conditions on the initial coin states for quantum walkers controlled by the Hadamard operator, we give theoretical criterion to observe the quantum walkers at an initial location with high probability.
We obtain a structure theorem of the positive support of the $n$-th power of the Grover walk on $k$-regular graph whose girth is greater than $2(n-1)$. This structure theorem is provided by the parity of the amplitude of another quantum walk on the line which depends only on $k$. The phase pattern of this quantum walk has a curious regularity. We also exactly show how the spectrum of the $n$-th power of the Grover walk is obtained by lifting up that of the adjacency matrix to the complex plain.
We construct a new type of quantum walks on simplicial complexes as a natural extension of the well-known Szegedy walk on graphs. One can numerically observe that our proposing quantum walks possess linear spreading and localization as in the case of the Grover walk on lattices. Moreover, our numerical simulation suggests that localization of our quantum walks reflect not only topological but also geometric structures. On the other hand, our proposing quantum walk contains an intrinsic problem concerning exhibition of nontrivial behavior, which is not seen in typical quantum walks such as Grov…
The discrete time quantum walk which is a quantum counterpart of random walk plays important roles in the theory of quantum information theory. In the present paper, we focus on discrete time quantum walks viewed as quantization of random walks on the path. We obtain a weak limit theorem for the time averaged distribution of our quantum walks.
Split-step quantum walks are models of supersymmetric quantum walk, and thus their Witten indices can be defined. We prove that the Witten index of a split-step quantum walk coincides with the difference between the winding numbers of functions corresponding to the right-limit of coins and the left-limit of coins. As a corollary, we give an alternative derivation of the index formula for split-step quantum walks, which is recently obtained by Suzuki and Tanaka.
We perform the scattering analysis of the evolution operator of quantum walks with an anisotropic coin, and we prove a weak limit theorem for their asymptotic velocity. The quantum walks that we consider include one-defect models, two-phase quantum walks, and topological phase quantum walks as special cases. Our analysis is based on an abstract framework for the scattering theory of unitary operators in a two-Hilbert spaces setting, which is of independent interest.
Quantum walks are powerful tools not only to construct the quantum speedup algorithms but also to describe specific models in physical processes. Furthermore, the discrete time quantum walk has been experimentally realized in various setups. We apply the concept of the quantum walk to the problems in quantum foundations. We show that randomness and the arrow of time in the quantum walk gradually emerge by periodic projective measurements from the mathematically obtained limit distribution under the time scale transformation.
Recently, the quaternionic quantum walk was formulated by the first author as a generalization of discrete-time quantum walks. We treat the right eigenvalue problem of quaternionic matrices to analysis the spectra of its transition matrix. The way to obtain all the right eigenvalues of a quaternionic matrix is given. From the unitary condition on the transition matrix of the quaternionic quantum walk, we deduce some properties about it. Our main results, Theorem 5.3, determine all the right eigenvalues of a quaternionic quantum walk by use of those of the corresponding weighted matrix. In addi…
