This study investigated the unitary equivalent classes of one-dimensional quantum walks. We determined the unitary equivalent classes of one-dimensional quantum walks, two-phase quantum walks with one defect, complete two-phase quantum walks, one-dimensional quantum walks with one defect and translation-invariant one-dimensional quantum walks. The unitary equivalent classes of one-dimensional quantum walks with initial states were also considered.
This study investigates unitary equivalent classes of one-dimensional quantum walks. We prove that one-dimensional quantum walks are unitary equivalent to quantum walks of Ambainis type and that translation-invariant one-dimensional quantum walks are Szegedy walks. We also present a necessary and sufficient condition for a one-dimensional quantum walk to be a Szegedy walk.
This study investigates the unitary equivalence of split-step quantum walks (SSQW). We consider a new class of quantum walks which includes all SSQWs. We show the explicit form of quantum walks in this class, and clarify their unitary equivalence classes. Unitary equivalence classes of Suzuki's SSQW are also given.
It is recently shown by Asahara-Funakawa-Seki-Tanaka that existing index theory for chirally symmetric (discrete-time) quantum walks can be extended to the setting of non-unitary quantum walks. More precisely, they consider a certain non-unitary variant of the two-phase split-step quantum walk as a concrete one-dimensional example, and give a complete classification of the associated index in their study. Note, however, that it remains uncertain whether or not their index gives a lower bound for the number of so-called topologically protected bound states unlike the setting of unitary quantum …
This study investigate the unitary equivalence classes of quantum walks on cycles. We show that unitary equivalence classes of quantum walks on a cycle with $N$ vertices are parameterized by $2N$ real parameters. Moreover, the ranges of two of the parameters are restricted, and the ranges depend on the parity of $N$.
We study the problem of site recurrence of discrete time nearest neighbor open quantum random walks (OQWs) on the integer line, proving basic properties and some of its relations with the corresponding problem for unitary (coined) quantum walks (UQWs). For both kinds of walks our discussion concerns two notions of recurrence, one given by a monitoring procedure, another in terms of Pólya numbers, and we study their similarities and differences. In particular, by considering UQWs and OQWs induced by the same pair of matrices, we discuss the fact that recurrence of these walks are related by an …
Recent developments in the index theory of discrete-time quantum walks allow us to assign a certain well-defined supersymmetric index to a pair of a unitary time-evolution $U$ and a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-grading operator $\varGamma$ satisfying the chiral symmetry condition $U^* = \varGamma U \varGamma.$ In this paper, this index theory will be extended to encompass non-unitary $U$. The existing literature for unitary $U$ makes use of the indispensable assumption that $U$ is essentially gapped; that is, we require that the essential spectrum of $U$ contains neither $-1$ nor $+1$ to define the associat…
This paper continues the previous work (Quantum Inf. Process (2019)) by two authors of the present paper about a spectral mapping property of chiral symmetric unitary operators. In physics, they treat non-unitary time-evolution operators to consider quantum walks in open systems. In this paper, we generalize the above result to include a chiral symmetric non-unitary operator whose coin operator only has two eigenvalues. As a result, the spectra of such non-unitary operators are included in the (possibly non-unit) circle and the real axis in the complex plane. We also give some examples of our …
Among the discrete evolution equations describing a quantum system $\rH_S$ undergoing repeated quantum interactions with a chain of exterior systems, we study and characterize those which are directed by classical random variables in $\RR^N$. The characterization we obtain is entirely algebraical in terms of the unitary operator driving the elementary interaction. We show that the solutions of these equations are then random walks on the group $U(\rH_0)$ of unitary operators on $\rH_0$.
The two major discrete time formulations for quantum walks, coined and scattering, are unitarily equivalent for arbitrary position dependent transition amplitudes and any topology (PRA {\bf 80}, 052301 (2009)). Although the proof explicit describes the mapping obtention, its high technicality may hinder relevant physical aspects involved in the equivalence. Discussing concrete examples -- the most general constructions for the line, square and honeycomb lattices -- here we unveil the similarities and differences of these two versions of quantum walks. We moreover show how to derive the dynamic…
Recently, the staggered quantum walk (SQW) on a graph is discussed as a generalization of coined quantum walks on graphs and Szegedy walks. We present a formula for the time evolution matrix of a 2-tessellable SQW on a graph, and so directly give its spectra. Furthermore, we present a formula for the Szegedy matrix of a bipartite graph by the same method, and so give its spectra. As an application, we present a formula for the characteristic polynomial of the modified Szegedy matrix in the quantum search problem on a graph, and give its spectra.
We define coined Quantum Walks on the infinite rooted binary tree given by unitary operators $U(C)$ on an associated infinite dimensional Hilbert space, depending on a unitary coin matrix $C\in U(3)$, and study their spectral properties. For circulant unitary coin matrices $C$, we derive an equation for the Carathéodory function associated to the spectral measure of a cyclic vector for $U(C)$. This allows us to show that for all circulant unitary coin matrices, the spectrum of the Quantum Walk has no singular continuous component. Furthermore, for coin matrices $C$ which are orthogonal circula…
The discrete-time quantum walk (QW) has been extensively and intensively investigated for the last decade, whose coin operator is defined by a unitary matrix. We extend the QW to a walk determined by a unitary matrix whose component is quaternion. We call this model quaternionic quantum walk (QQW) and present some properties. This paper is the first step for the study on QQWs.
We present a general account on the stationary scattering theory for unitary operators in a two-Hilbert spaces setting. For unitary operators $U_0,U$ in Hilbert spaces ${\cal H}_0,{\cal H}$ and for an identification operator $J:{\cal H}_0\to{\cal H}$, we give the definitions and collect properties of the stationary wave operators, the strong wave operators, the scattering operator and the scattering matrix for the triple $(U,U_0,J)$. In particular, we exhibit conditions under which the stationary wave operators and the strong wave operators exist and coincide, and we derive representation form…
This study is motivated by the previous work [14]. We treat 3 types of the one-dimensional quantum walks (QWs), whose time evolutions are described by diagonal unitary matrix, and diagonal unitary matrices with one defect. In this paper, we call the QW defined by diagonal unitary matrices, "the diagonal QW", and we consider the stationary distributions of generally 2-state diagonal QW with one defect, 3-state space-homogeneous diagonal QW, and 3-state diagonal QW with one defect. One of the purposes of our study is to characterize the QWs by the stationary measure, which may lead to answer the…
Irreducible representations (irreps) of a finite group $G$ are equivalent if there exists a similarity transformation between them. In this paper, we describe an explicit algorithm for constructing this transformation between a pair of equivalent irreps, assuming we are given an algorithm to compute the matrix elements of these irreps. Along the way, we derive a generalization of the classical orthogonality relations for matrix elements of irreps of finite groups. We give an explicit form of such unitary matrices for the important case of conjugated Young-Yamanouchi representations, when our g…
We study a spin-1/2-particle moving on a one dimensional lattice subject to disorder induced by a random, space-dependent quantum coin. The discrete time evolution is given by a family of random unitary quantum walk operators, where the shift operation is assumed to be deterministic. Each coin is an independent identically distributed random variable with values in the group of two dimensional unitary matrices. We derive sufficient conditions on the probability distribution of the coins such that the system exhibits dynamical localization. Put differently, the tunneling probability between two…
We study decoherence in the quantum walk on the xy-plane. We generalize the method of decoherent coin quantum walk, introduced by [T.A. Brun, et.al, Phys.Rev.A 67 (2003) 032304],which could be applicable to all sorts of decoherence in two dimensional quantum walks, irrespective of the unitary transformation governing the walk. As an application we study decoherence in the presence of broken line noise in which the quantum walk is governed by the two-dimensional Hadamard operator.
We review various unitary network models used in quantum computing, spectral analysis or condensed matter physics and establish relationships between them. We show that symmetric one dimensional quantum walks are universal, as are CMV matrices. We prove spectral stability and propagation properties for general asymptotically uniform models by means of unitary Mourre theory.
This note describes recent results on the localization properties of Random Quantum Walks on the d-dimensional lattice in a regime analogous to the large disorder regime by means of the Fractional Moments Method adapted to the unitary framework.
Given two Hilbert spaces, $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{K}$, we introduce an abstract unitary operator $U$ on $\mathcal{H}$ and its discriminant $T$ on $\mathcal{K}$ induced by a coisometry from $\mathcal{H}$ to $\mathcal{K}$ and a unitary involution on $\mathcal{H}$. In a particular case, these operators $U$ and $T$ become the evolution operator of the Szegedy walk on a graph, possibly infinite, and the transition probability operator thereon. We show the spectral mapping theorem between $U$ and $T$ via the Joukowsky transform. Using this result, we have completely detemined the spectrum of the…
We perform the scattering analysis of the evolution operator of quantum walks with an anisotropic coin, and we prove a weak limit theorem for their asymptotic velocity. The quantum walks that we consider include one-defect models, two-phase quantum walks, and topological phase quantum walks as special cases. Our analysis is based on an abstract framework for the scattering theory of unitary operators in a two-Hilbert spaces setting, which is of independent interest.
We define and analyze random quantum walks on homogeneous trees of degree $q\geq 3$. Such walks describe the discrete time evolution of a quantum particle with internal degree of freedom in $\C^q$ hopping on the neighboring sites of the tree in presence of static disorder. The one time step random unitary evolution operator of the particle depends on a unitary matrix $C\in U(q)$ which monitors the strength of the disorder. We prove for any $q$ that there exist open sets of matrices in $U(q)$ for which the random evolution has either pure point spectrum almost surely or purely absolutely contin…
Unitary matrix integrals over symmetric polynomials play an important role in a wide variety of applications, including random matrix theory, gauge theory, number theory, and enumerative combinatorics. We derive novel results on such integrals and apply these and other identities to correlation functions of long-range random walks (LRRW) consisting of hard-core bosons. We generalize an identity due to Diaconis and Shahshahani which computes unitary matrix integrals over products of power sum polynomials. This allows us to derive two expressions for unitary matrix integrals over Schur polynomia…
Quantization of a random-walk model is performed by giving a qudit (a multi-component wave function) to a walker at site and by introducing a quantum coin, which is a matrix representation of a unitary transformation. In quantum walks, the qudit of walker is mixed according to the quantum coin at each time step, when the walker hops to other sites. As special cases of the quantum walks driven by high-dimensional quantum coins generally studied by Brun, Carteret, and Ambainis, we study the models obtained by choosing rotation as the unitary transformation, whose matrix representations determine…
The Dirac Hamiltonian $H^{\left(D\right)}$ for relativistic charged fermions minimally coupled to (possibly time-dependent) electromagnetic fields is transformed with a purpose-built flow equation method, so that the result of that transformation is unitary equivalent to $H^{\left(D\right)}$ and granted to strive towards a limiting value $H^{\left(NW\right)}$ commuting with the Dirac $β$-matrix. Upon expansion of $H^{\left(NW\right)}$ to order $\frac{v^2}{c^2}$ the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian $H^{\left(SP\right)}$ of Schrödinger-Pauli quantum mechanics emerges as the leading order term adding …
Coin and scattering are the two major formulations for discrete quantum walks models, each believed to have its own advantages in different applications. Although they are related in some cases, it was an open question their equivalence in arbitrary topologies. Here we present a general construction for the two models for any graph and also for position dependent transition amplitudes. We then prove constructively their unitary equivalence. Defining appropriate projector operators, we moreover show how to obtain the probabilities for one model from the evolution of the other.
We consider the discrete time unitary dynamics given by a quantum walk on the lattice $\Z^d$ performed by a quantum particle with internal degree of freedom, called coin state, according to the following iterated rule: a unitary update of the coin state takes place, followed by a shift on the lattice, conditioned on the coin state of the particle. We study the large time behavior of the quantum mechanical probability distribution of the position observable in $\Z^d$ when the sequence of unitary updates is given by an i.i.d. sequence of random matrices. When averaged over the randomness, this d…
A convergence theorem is obtained for quantum random walks with particles in an arbitrary normal state. This result unifies and extends previous work on repeated-interactions models, including that of the author (2010, J. London Math. Soc. (2) 81, 412-434; 2010, Comm. Math. Phys. 300, 317-329). When the random-walk generator acts by ampliation and multiplication or conjugation by a unitary operator, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the quantum stochastic cocycle which arises in the limit to be driven by an isometric, co-isometric or unitary process.
Describing a particle in an external electromagnetic field is a basic task of quantum mechanics. The standard scheme for this is known as "minimal coupling", and consists of replacing the momentum operators in the Hamiltonian by modified ones with an added vector potential. In lattice systems it is not so clear how to do this, because there is no continuous translation symmetry, and hence there are no momenta. Moreover, when time is also discrete, as in quantum walk systems, there is no Hamiltonian, only a unitary step operator. We present a unified framework of gauge theory for such discrete …
The quantum walks in the lattice spaces are represented as unitary evolutions. We find a generator for the evolution and apply it to further understand the walks. We first extend the discrete time quantum walks to continuous time walks. Then we construct the quantum Markov semigroup for quantum walks and characterize it in an invariant subalgebra. In the meanwhile, we obtain the limit distributions of the quantum walks in one-dimension with a proper scaling, which was obtained by Konno by a different method.
We focus on index theory for chirally symmetric discrete-time quantum walks on the one-dimensional integer lattice. Such a discrete-time quantum walk model can be characterised as a pair of a unitary self-adjoint operator $\varGamma$ and a unitary time-evolution operator $U,$ satisfying the chiral symmetry condition $U^* = \varGamma U \varGamma.$ The significance of this index theory lies in the fact that the index we assign to the pair $(\varGamma,U)$ gives a lower bound for the number of symmetry protected edge-states associated with the time-evolution $U.$ The symmetry protection of edge-st…
Discrete-time quantum walks are considered a counterpart of random walks and the study for them has been getting attention since around 2000. In this paper, we focus on a quantum walk which generates a probability distribution splitting to two parts. The quantum walker with two coin states spreads at points, represented by integers, and we analyze the chance of finding the walker at each position after it carries out a unitary evolution a lot of times. The result is reported as a long-time limit distribution from which one can see an approximation to the finding probability.
Recently, the quaternionic quantum walk was formulated by the first author as a generalization of discrete-time quantum walks. We treat the right eigenvalue problem of quaternionic matrices to analysis the spectra of its transition matrix. The way to obtain all the right eigenvalues of a quaternionic matrix is given. From the unitary condition on the transition matrix of the quaternionic quantum walk, we deduce some properties about it. Our main results, Theorem 5.3, determine all the right eigenvalues of a quaternionic quantum walk by use of those of the corresponding weighted matrix. In addi…
Although quantum walks exhibit peculiar properties that distinguish them from random walks, classical behavior can be recovered in the asymptotic limit by destroying the coherence of the pure state associated to the quantum system. Here I show that this is not the only way: I introduce a quantum walk driven by an inhomogeneous, time-dependent coin operator, which mimics the statistical properties of a random walk at all time scales. The quantum particle undergoes unitary evolution and, in fact, the high correlation evidenced by the components of the wave function can be used to revert the outc…
We define a quaternionic extension of the Szegedy walk on a graph and study its right spectral properties. The condition for the transition matrix of the quaternionic Szegedy walk on a graph to be quaternionic unitary is given. In order to derive the spectral mapping theorem for the quaternionic Szegedy walk, we derive a quaternionic extension of the determinant expression of the second weighted zeta function of a graph. Our main results determine explicitly all the right eigenvalues of the quaternionic Szegedy walk by using complex right eigenvalues of the corresponding doubly weighted matrix…
In this expository note, we discuss spatially inhomogeneous quantum walks in one dimension and describe a genre of mathematical methods that enables one to translate information about the time-independent eigenvalue equation for the unitary generator into dynamical estimates for the corresponding quantum walk. To illustrate the general methods, we show how to apply them to a 1D coined quantum walk whose coins are distributed according to an element of the Thue--Morse subshift.
We present a new technique to obtain polynomial decay estimates for the matrix coefficients of unitary operators. Our approach, based on commutator methods, applies to nets of unitary operators, unitary representations of topological groups, and unitary operators given by the evolution group of a self-adjoint operator or by powers of a unitary operator. Our results are illustrated with a wide range of examples in quantum mechanics and dynamical systems, as for instance Schrödinger operators, Dirac operators, quantum waveguides, horocycle flows, adjacency matrices, Jacobi matrices, quantum walk…
We perform the spectral analysis of the evolution operator U of quantum walks with an anisotropic coin, which include one-defect models, two-phase quantum walks, and topological phase quantum walks as special cases. In particular, we determine the essential spectrum of U, we show the existence of locally U-smooth operators, we prove the discreteness of the eigenvalues of U outside the thresholds, and we prove the absence of singular continuous spectrum for U. Our analysis is based on new commutator methods for unitary operators in a two-Hilbert spaces setting, which are of independent interest…
Quantum walks have attracted attention as a promising platform realizing topological phenomena and many physicists have introduced various types of indices to characterize topologically protected bound states that are robust against perturbations. In this paper, we introduce an index from a supersymmetric point of view. This allows us to define indices for all chiral symmetric quantum walks such as multi-dimensional split-step quantum walks and quantum walks on graphs, for which there has been no index theory. Moreover, the index gives a lower bound on the number of bound states robust against…
A Floquet systems is a periodically driven quantum system. It can be described by a Floquet operator. If this unitary operator has a gap in the spectrum, then one can define associated topological bulk invariants which can either only depend on the bands of the Floquet operator or also on the time as a variable. It is shown how a K-theoretic result combined with the bulk-boundary correspondence leads to edge invariants for the half-space Floquet operators. These results also apply to topological quantum walks.
We consider an abstract quantum walk defined by a unitary evolution operator $U$, which acts on a Hilbert space decomposed into a direct sum of Hilbert spaces $\{\mathcal{H}_v \}_{v \in V}$. We show that such $U$ naturally defines a directed graph $G_U$ and the probability of finding a quantum walker on $G_U$. The asymptotic property of an abstract quantum walker is governed by the generator $H$ of $U$ such that $U^n = e^{inH}$. We derive the generator of an evolution of the form $U = S(2d_A^* d_A -1)$, a generalization of the Szegedy evolution operator. Here $d_A$ is a boundary operator and $…
