The subject of this paper is a kind of dynamical systems called quantum walks. We study one-dimensional homogeneous analytic quantum walks U. We explain how to identify the space of all the uniform intertwining operators between these walks. We can also determine whether U can be realized by a (not necessarily homogeneous) continuous-time uniform quantum walk on Z. Several examples of quantum walks, which can not be realized by continuous-time uniform quantum walks, are presented. The 4-state Grover walk is one of them. Before stating the main theorems, we clarify the definition of one-dimensional quantum walks. For the first half of this paper, we study basic properties of one-dimensional quantum walks, which are not necessarily homogeneous. An equivalence relation between quantum walks called similarity is also introduced. This allows us to manipulate quantum walks in a flexible manner.
In this paper, a geometric process to compare solutions of symmetric hyperbolic systems on (possibly different) globally hyperbolic manifolds is realized via a family of intertwining operators. By fixing a suitable parameter, it is shown that the resulting intertwining operator preserves Hermitian forms naturally defined on the space of homogeneous solutions. As an application, we investigate the action of the intertwining operators in the context of algebraic quantum field theory. In particular, we provide a new geometric proof for the existence of the so-called Hadamard states on globally hy…
We propose a general framework for quantum walks on d-dimensional spaces. We investigate asymptotic behavior of these walks. Among them, existence of limit distribution of homogeneous walks is proved. In this theorem, the support of the initial unit vector is not necessarily finite. We also pay attention on 1-cocycles. For homogeneous walks, convergence of averages of 1-cocycles associated to the position observable is also proved.
We explore the implications of hidden symmetries present in a particular quantum cosmological setting, extending the results reported in \cite{10,11}. In more detail, our case study is constituted by a spatially closed Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe, in the presence of a conformally coupled scalar field. The $su(1,1)$ hidden symmetries of this model, together with the Hamiltonian constraint, lead to the gauge invariance of its corresponding Bargmann indices. We subsequently show that some factor-ordering choices can be related to the allowed spectrum of Bargmann indices and hen…
We propose categories of $1$-dimensional and multi-dimensional quantum walks. In the categories, an object is a quantum walk, and a morphism is an intertwining operator between two quantum walks. The new framework enables us to discuss quantum walks in a unified way. The purposes of this paper are the following: (1) We reinterpret known results in our new framework. (2) We show several new theorems. For example, it is proved that every space-homogeneous time-periodic analytic quantum walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ has a limit distribution of velocity for every initial unit vector. Analyticity is a ver…
The subject of this paper is quantum walks, which are expected to simulate several kinds of quantum dynamical systems. In this paper, we define analyticity for quantum walks on Z. Almost all the quantum walks on $\mathbb{Z}$ which have been already studied are analytic. In the framework of analytic quantum walks, we can enlarge the theory of quantum walks. We obtain not only several generalizations of known results, but also new types of theorems. It is proved that every analytic space-homogeneous quantum walk on Z is essentially a composite of shift operators and continuous-time analytic spac…
We consider transport properties for a non-homogeneous persistent random walk, that may be viewed as a mean-field version of the Lévy-Lorentz gas, namely a 1-d model characterized by a fat polynomial tail of the distribution of scatterers' distance, with parameter $α$. By varying the value of $α$ we have a transition from normal transport to superdiffusion, which we characterize by appropriate continuum limits.
This paper is concerned with the continuous-time quantum walk on Z, Z^d, and infinite homogeneous trees. By using the generating function method, we compute the limit of the average probability distribution for the general isotropic walk on Z, and for nearest-neighbor walks on Z^d and infinite homogeneous trees. In addition, we compute the asymptotic approximation for the probability of the return to zero at time t in all these cases.
In this work, we study open quantum random walks, as described by S. Attal et al. These objects are given in terms of completely positive maps acting on trace-class operators, leading to one of the simplest open quantum versions of the recurrence problem for classical, discrete-time random walks. This work focuses on obtaining criteria for site recurrence of nearest-neighbor, homogeneous walks on the integer line, with the description presented here making use of recent results of the theory of open walks, most particularly regarding reducibility properties of the operators involved. This allo…
The phenomenon of macroscopic homogenization is illustrated with a simple example of diffusion. We examine the conditions under which a $d$--dimensional simple random walk in a symmetric random media converges to a Brownian motion. For $d=1$, both the macroscopic homogeneity condition and the diffusion coefficient can be read from an explicit expression for the Green's function. Except for this case, the two available formulas for the effective diffusion matrix $κ$ do not explicit show how macroscopic homogenization takes place. Using an electrostatic analogy due to Anshelevich, Khanin and Sin…
We consider homogeneous open quantum random walks on a lattice with finite dimensional local Hilbert space and we study in particular the position process of the quantum trajectories of the walk. We prove that the properly rescaled position process asymptotically approaches a mixture of Gaussian measures. We can generalize the existing central limit type results and give more explicit expressions for the involved asymptotic quantities, dropping any additional condition on the walk. We use deformation and spectral techniques, together with reducibility properties of the local channel associated…
The existence of localization for the Grover walk on the multi-dimensional lattice is known. This paper gives some conditions for the existence of localization for the space-homogeneous quantum walks. We also prove that localization does not occur for the Fourier walk on the multi-dimensional lattice.
Let ${\cal G}$ be the incipient infinite cluster (IIC) for percolation on a homogeneous tree of degree $n_0+1$. We obtain estimates for the transition density of the continuous time simple random walk $Y$ on ${\cal G}$; the process satisfies anomalous diffusion and has spectral dimension 4/3.
We study an homogeneous irreducible markovian random walk in a square lattice of arbitrary dimension, with an antisymmetric perturbation acting only in one point. We compute exactly spatial correction to the diffusive behaviour in the asympotics of probability, in the spirit of local limit theorems for random walks.
In this paper, we consider a homogeneous Markov process ξ(t;ω) on an ultrametric space Q_p, with distribution density f(x,t), x in Q_p, t in R_+, satisfying the ultrametric diffusion equation df(x,t)/dt =-Df(x,t). We construct and examine a random variable τ(ω) that has the meaning the first passage times. Also, we obtain a formula for the mean number of returns on the interval (0,t] and give its asymptotic estimates for large t.

We consider the dynamical properties of Quantum Walks defined on the d-dimensional cubic lattice, or the homogeneous tree of coordination number 2d, with site dependent random phases, further characterised by transition probabilities between neighbouring sites equal to 1/(2d). We show that the localisation length for these Balanced Random Quantum Walks can be expressed as a combinatorial expression involving sums over weighted paths on the considered graph. This expression provides lower bounds on the localisation length by restriction to paths with weight 1, which allows us to prove the local…
We consider killed planar random walks on isoradial graphs. Contrary to the lattice case, isoradial graphs are not translation invariant, do not admit any group structure and are spatially non-homogeneous. Despite these crucial differences, we compute the asymptotics of the Martin kernel, deduce the Martin boundary and show that it is minimal. Similar results on the grid $\mathbb Z^d$ are derived in a celebrated work of Ney and Spitzer.
We construct concrete examples of time operators for both continuous and discrete-time homogeneous quantum walks, and we determine their deficiency indices and spectra. For a discrete-time quantum walk, the time operator can be self-adjoint if the time evolution operator has a non-zero winding number. In this case, its spectrum becomes a discrete set of real numbers.
Open Quantum Walks (OQWs), originally introduced by S. Attal, are quantum generalizations of classical Markov chains. Recently, natural continuous time models of OQW have been developed by C. Pellegrini. These models, called Continuous Time Open Quantum Walks (CTOQWs), appear as natural continuous time limits of discrete time OQWs. In particular they are quantum extensions of continuous time Markov chains. This article is devoted to the study of homogeneous CTOQW on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We focus namely on their associated quantum trajectories which allow us to prove a Central Limit Theorem for the …
We study one-dimensional quantum walks in a homogeneous electric field. The field is given by a phase which depends linearly on position and is applied after each step. The long time propagation properties of this system, such as revivals, ballistic expansion and Anderson localization, depend very sensitively on the value of the electric field $Φ$, e.g., on whether $Φ/(2π)$ is rational or irrational. We relate these properties to the continued fraction expansion of the field. When the field is given only with finite accuracy, the beginning of the expansion allows analogous conclusions about th…
In this paper, we claim that a common underlying structure--a skeleton structure--is present behind discrete-time quantum walks (QWs) on a one-dimensional lattice with a homogeneous coin matrix. This skeleton structure is independent of the initial state, and partially, even of the coin matrix. This structure is best interpreted in the context of quantum-walk-replicating random walks (QWRWs), i.e., random walks that replicate the probability distribution of quantum walks, where this newly found structure acts as a simplified formula for the transition probability. Additionally, we construct a …
We consider the Weyl quantum walk in 3+1 dimensions, that is a discrete-time walk describing a particle with two internal degrees of freedom moving on a Cayley graph of the group $\mathbb Z^3$, that in an appropriate regime evolves according to Weyl's equation. The Weyl quantum walk was recently derived as the unique unitary evolution on a Cayley graph of $\mathbb Z^3$ that is homogeneous and isotropic. The general solution of the quantum walk evolution is provided here in the position representation, by the analytical expression of the propagator, i.e. transition amplitude from a node of the …
We introduce and study a class of discrete-time quantum walks on a one-dimensional lattice. In contrast to the standard homogeneous quantum walks, coin operators are inhomogeneous and depend on their positions in this class of models. The models are shown to be self-dual with respect to the Fourier transform, which is analogous to the Aubry-André model describing the one-dimensional tight-binding model with a quasi-periodic potential. When the period of coin operators is incommensurate to the lattice spacing, we rigorously show that the limit distribution of the quantum walk is localized at th…
