We consider the time-independent scattering theory for time evolution operators of one-dimensional two-state quantum walks. The scattering matrix associated with the position-dependent quantum walk naturally appears in the asymptotic behavior at spatial infinity of generalized eigenfunctions. The asymptotic behavior of generalized eigenfunctions is a consequence of an explicit expression of the Green function associated with the free quantum walk. When the position-dependent quantum walk is a finite rank perturbation of the free quantum walk, we derive a kind of combinatorial constructions of the scattering matrix by counting paths of quantum walkers. We also mention some remarks on the tunneling effect.
The purpose of this paper is to give a direct proof of an eigenfunction expansion formula for one-dimensional 2-state quantum walks, which is an analog of that for Sturm-Liouville operators due to Weyl, Stone, Titchmarsh and Kodaira. In the context of the theory of CMV matrix it had been already established by Gesztesy-Zinchenko. Our approach is restricted to the class of quantum walks mentioned above whereas it is direct and it gives some important properties of Green functions. The properties given here enable us to give a concrete formula for a positive-matrix-valued measure, which gives di…
In this work we consider open quantum random walks on the non-negative integers. By considering orthogonal matrix polynomials we are able to describe transition probability expressions for classes of walks via a matrix version of the Karlin-McGregor formula. We focus on absorbing boundary conditions and, for simpler classes of examples, we consider path counting and the corresponding combinatorial tools. A non-commutative version of the gambler's ruin is studied by obtaining the probability of reaching a certain fortune and the mean time to reach a fortune or ruin in terms of generating functi…

We address the problem of counting walks by winding angle on the Kreweras lattice, an oriented version of the triangular lattice. Our method uses a new decomposition of the lattice, which allows us to write functional equations characterising a generating function of walks counted by length, endpoint and winding angle. We then solve these functional equations in terms of Jacobi theta functions. By using this result in conjunction with the reflection principle, we count walks confined to a cone of opening angle any multiple of $\fracπ{3}$, allowing us to extract asymptotic and algebraic informa…
Given a Dirichlet eigenfunction of a 2D quantum billiard, the boundary domain count is the number of intersections of the nodal lines with the boundary. We study the integer sequence defined by these numbers, sorted according to the energies of the eigenfunctions. Based on a variant of Berry's random wave model, we derive a semi-classical trace formula for the sequence of boundary domain counts. The formula consists of a Weyl-like smooth part, and an oscillating part which depends on classical periodic orbits and their geometry. The predictions of this trace formula are supported by numerical …
We clarify that coined quantum walk is determined by only the choice of local quantum coins. To do so, we characterize coined quantum walks on graph by disjoint Euler circles with respect to symmetric arcs. In this paper, we introduce a new class of coined quantum walk by a special choice of quantum coins determined by corresponding quantum graph, called quantum graph walk. We show that a stationary state of quantum graph walk describes the eigenfunction of the quantum graph.
We prove Anderson localization for all Diophantine frequencies and all non-resonant phases for a model that arises from 2D quantum walk model subject to an external magnetic field. This is the first localization result for all Diophantine frequencies in the magnetic quantum walk and the quasi-periodic CMV setting. We also obtain sharp asymptotics of the localized eigenfunctions.
The connective constant $μ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the asymptotic growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks on $G$ from a given starting vertex. We survey three aspects of the dependence of the connective constant on the underlying graph $G$. Firstly, when $G$ is cubic, we study the effect on $μ(G)$ of the Fisher transformation (that is, the replacement of vertices by triangles). Secondly, we discuss upper and lower bounds for $μ(G)$ when $G$ is regular. Thirdly, we present strict inequalities for the connective constants $μ(G)$ of vertex-transitive graphs $G$, as $G$ varies. As a consequ…
In this thesis, we study Laplacian eigenfunctions on metric graphs, also known as quantum graphs. We restrict the discussion to standard quantum graphs. These are finite connected metric graphs with functions that satisfy Neumann vertex conditions. The first goal of this thesis is the study of the nodal count problem. That is the number of points on which the $n$th eigenfunction vanishes. We provide a probabilistic setting using which we are able to define the nodal count\textquoteright s statistics. We show that the nodal count statistics admit a topological symmetry by which the first Betti …
Using the technique of path counting we show non-existence of sojourn times in the Grover walk which is related to the Grover's algorithm in computer science.
We consider a one-dimensional space-inhomogeneous discrete time quantum walk. This model is the Hadamard walk with one defect at the origin which is different from the model introduced by Wojcik et al. [14]. We obtain a stationary measure of the model by solving the eigenvalue problem and an asymptotic behaviour of the return probability by the path counting approach. Moreover, we get the time-averaged limit measure using the space-time generating function method. The measure is symmetric for the origin and independent of the initial coin state at the starting point. So localization depends on…
This paper is a continuation of the paper \cite{W} by the third author, which studied quantum walks with special long-range perturbations of the coin operator. In this paper, we consider general long-range perturbations of the coin operator and prove the non-existence of a singular continuous spectrum and embedded eigenvalues. The proof relies on the construction of generalized eigenfunctions (Jost solutions) which was studied in the short-range case in \cite{MSSSSdis}.
For d at least two and integer n, let c_n = c_n(d) denote the number of length n self-avoiding walks beginning at the origin in the integer lattice Z^d, and, for even n, let p_n = p_n(d) denote the number of length n self-avoiding polygons in Z^d up to translation. Then the probability under the uniform law W_n on self-avoiding walks Gamma of any given odd length n beginning at the origin that Gamma closes -- i.e., that Gamma's endpoint is a neighbour of the origin -- is given by W_n ( Gamma closes ) = 2(n+1) p_{n+1}/c_n. The polygon and walk cardinalities share a common exponential growth: li…
We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u(n)-WZNW model. The latter is known to be closely related to the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. We establish further t…
The analysis of the return probability is one of the most essential and fundamental topics in the study of classical random walks. In this paper, we study the return probability of quantum and correlated random walks in the one-dimensional integer lattice by the path counting method. We show that the return probability of both quantum and correlated random walks can be expressed in terms of the Legendre polynomial. Moreover, the generating function of the return probability can be written in terms of elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds for the quantum walk.
Moments of secular and inverse secular coefficients, averaged over random matrices from classical groups, are related to the enumeration of non-negative matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Similar random matrix averages are related to certain configurations of vicious random walkers and to the enumeration of plane partitions. The combinatorial meaning of the average of the characteristic polynomial of random Hermitian and Wishart matrices is also investigated, and consequently several simple universality results are derived.
We study space-inhomogeneous quantum walks (QWs) on the integer lattice which we assign three different coin matrices to the positive part, the negative part, and the origin, respectively. We call them two-phase QWs with one defect. They cover one-defect and two-phase QWs, which have been intensively researched. Localization is one of the most characteristic properties of QWs, and various types of two-phase QWs with one defect exhibit localization. Moreover, the existence of eigenvalues is deeply related to localization. In this paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the exi…
