An immersed interface-lattice Boltzmann method (II-LBM) is developed for modelling fluid-structure systems. The key element of this approach is the determination of the jump conditions that are satisfied by the distribution functions within the framework of the lattice Boltzmann method when forces are imposed along a surface immersed in an incompressible fluid. In this initial II-LBM, the discontinuity related to the normal portion of the interfacial force is sharply resolved by imposing the relevant jump conditions using an approach that is analogous to imposing the corresponding pressure jump condition in the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We show that the jump conditions for the distribution functions are the same in both single-relaxation-time and multi-relaxation-time LBM formulations. Tangential forces are treated using the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM). The performance of the II-LBM method is compared to both the direct forcing IB-LBM for rigid-body fluid-structure interaction, and the classical IB-LBM for elastic interfaces. Higher order accuracy is observed with the II-LBM as compared to the IB-LBM for selected benchmark problems. Because the jump conditions of the distribution function also satisfy the continuity of the velocity field across the interface, the error in the velocity field is much smaller for the II-LBM than the IB-LBM. The II-LBM is also demonstrated to provide superior volume conservation when simulating flexible boundaries.

In the first part of this study, we compared the performances of two categories of no-slip boundary treatments, i.e., the interpolated bounce-back schemes and the immersed boundary methods in a series of laminar flow simulations within the lattice Boltzmann method. In this second part, these boundary treatments are further compared in the simulations of turbulent flows with complex geometry to provide a next-level assessment of these schemes. Two non-trivial turbulent flow problems, a fully developed turbulent pipe flow at a low Reynolds number, and a decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulent f…
The interpolated bounce-back scheme and the immersed boundary method are the two most popular algorithms in treating a no-slip boundary on curved surfaces in the lattice Boltzmann method. While those algorithms are frequently implemented in the numerical simulations involving complex geometries, such as particle-laden flows, their performances are seldom compared systematically over the same local quantities within the same context. In this paper, we present a systematic comparative investigation on some frequently used and most state-of-the-art interpolated bounce-back schemes and immersed bo…
A unified framework to derive discrete time-marching schemes for coupling of immersed solid and elastic objects to the lattice Boltzmann method is presented. Based on operator splitting for the discrete Boltzmann equation, second-order time-accurate schemes for the immersed boundary method, viscous force coupling and external boundary force are derived. Furthermore, a modified formulation of the external boundary force is introduced that leads to a more accurate no-slip boundary condition. The derivation also reveals that the coupling methods can be cast into a unified form, and that the immer…
We review the lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method coupled with the immersed boundary (IB) method for the description of combined flow of particulate suspensions with immersed elastic objects. We describe the implementation of the combined LB-IB method into the open-source package ESPResSo. We present easy-to-use structures used to model a closed object in a simulation package, the definition of its elastic properties, and the interaction between the fluid and the immersed object. We also present the test cases with short examples of the code explaining the functionality of the new package.
The acoustic waves generated by moving bodies and the movement of bodies by acoustic waves are central phenomena in the operation of musical instruments and in everyday's experiences like the movement of a boat on a lake by the wake generated by a propelled ship. Previous works have successfully simulated the interaction between a moving body and a lattice-Boltzmann fluid by immersed boundary methods. Hereby, we show how to implement the same coupling in the case of a Lattice-Boltzmann for waves, i.e. a LBGK model that directly recovers the wave equation in a linear medium, without modeling fl…
We derive a mathematical model and the corresponding computational scheme to study deflection of a two-dimensional elastic cantilever beam immersed in a channel, where one end of the beam is fixed to the channel wall. The immersed boundary method has been employed to simulate numerically the fluid-structure interaction problem. We investigate how variations in physical and numerical parameters change the effective material properties of the elastic beam and compare the results qualitatively with linear beam theory. We also pay careful attention to "corner effects" -- irregularities in beam sha…
Immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) has been widely used for simulation of particle-laden flows recently. However, it was limited to small-scale simulations with no more than O(103) particles. Here, we expand IB-LBM for massive particle-laden flows with more than O(104) particles by two sequential works. First is the Part I: serial computing on a single CPU core and following the Part II: parallel computing on many CPU cores. In this Part I paper, a highly efficient and localized implementation of IB-LBM is proposed for serial computing. We optimize in three main aspects: swap …
It is well known that the number of particles should be scaled up to enable industrial scale simulation. The calculations are more computationally intensive when the motion of the surrounding fluid is considered. Besides the advances in computer hardware and numerical algorithms, the coupling scheme also plays an important role on the computational efficiency. In this study, a particle immersed boundary method (PIBM) for simulating the fluid-particle multiphase flow was presented and assessed in both two- and three-dimensional applications. The idea behind PIBM derives from the conventional mo…

Immersed boundary methods for computing confined fluid and plasma flows in complex geometries are reviewed. The mathematical principle of the volume penalization technique is described and simple examples for imposing Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in one dimension are given. Applications for fluid and plasma turbulence in two and three space dimensions illustrate the applicability and the efficiency of the method in computing flows in complex geometries, for example in toroidal geometries with asymmetric poloidal cross-sections.
In our recent work [H. Zhang, F.X. Trias, A. Oliva, D. Yang, Y. Tan, Y. Sheng. PIBM: Particulate immersed boundary method for fluid-particle interaction problems. Powder Technology. 272(2015), 1-13.], a particulate immersed boundary method (PIBM) for simulating fluid-particle multiphase flow was proposed and assessed in both two- and three-dimensional applications. In this study, the PIBM was extended to solve thermal interaction problems between spherical particles and fluid. The Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) was adopted to solve the fluid flow and temperature fields, the PIBM was responsibl…
The immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) has been widely used in the simulation of fluid-solid interaction and particulate flow problems, since proposed in 2004. However, it is usually a non-trivial task to retain the flexibility and the accuracy simultaneously in the implementation of this approach. Based on the intrinsic nature of the LBM, we propose a simple and second-order accurate IB-LBM in this paper, where the no-slip boundary condition on the fluid-solid interface is directly imposed by iteratively correcting the distribution function near the boundary, markedly similar…
This paper presents a numerical method for the simulation of fluid-structure interaction specifically tailored to interactions between Newtonian fluids and a large number of slender viscoelastic Cosserat rods. Because of their high flexibility and low weight the rods considered here exhibit large deflections, even under moderate fluid loads. Their motion, in turn, modifies the flow so that fluid and structures are strongly coupled to each other which is numerically very challenging. The paper proposes a new coupling approach based on an immersed boundary method which improves upon existing met…
Dispersion of low-density rigid particles with complex geometries is ubiquitous in both natural and industrial environments. We show that while explicit methods for coupling the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and Newton's equations of motion are often sufficient to solve for the motion of cylindrical particles with low density ratios, for more complex particles - such as a body with a protrusion - they become unstable. We present an implicit formulation of the coupling between rigid body dynamics and fluid dynamics within the framework of the immersed boundary projection method. Simila…
We present a novel framework inspired by the Immersed Boundary Method for predicting the fluid-structure interaction of complex structures immersed in flows with moderate to high Reynolds numbers. The main novelties of the proposed fluid-structure interaction framework are 1) the use of elastodynamics equations for the structure, 2) the use of a high-order Navier-Stokes solver for the flow, and 3) the variational transfer (L2-projection) for coupling the solid and fluid subproblems. The dynamic behavior of a deformable structure is simulated in a finite element framework by adopting a fully im…
A closure for the effective relaxation time of the Boltzmann-BGK kinetic equation for fluid turbulence is presented, based on a double-averaging procedure over both kinetic and turbulent fluctuations. The resulting effective relaxation time appears to agree with values obtained via a renormalization group treatment of the Navier-Stokes equation only at low values of $k/T$, the ratio of turbulent kinetic energy to fluid temperature. For $k/T>0.1$ the kinetic treatment delivers a significantly longer effective relaxation time.
In this paper, we propose a hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (HLBM) for solving fluid-structure interaction problems. The proposed numerical approach is applied to model the flow induced by a vibrating thin lamina submerged in a viscous quiescent fluid. The hydrodynamic force exerted by the fluid on the solid body is described by means of a complex hydrodynamic function, whose real and imaginary parts are determined via parametric analysis. Numerical results are validated by comparison with those from other numerical as well as experimental works available in the literature. The proposed hybrid…
A discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) coupled with the immersed boundary (IB) method is developed to perform interface-resolved simulation of particle-laden flows. The present method (IB-DUGKS) preserves the respective advantages of the IB and DUGKS, i.e., the flexibility and efficiency for treating complex flows, and the robustness and low numerical-dissipation. In IB-DUGKS, the IB method is used to treat the fluid-solid interfaces and the DUGKS is applied to simulate the fluid flow, making use of the Lagrangian and Eulerian meshes, respectively. Those two meshes are fully independent…
We present a lattice Boltzmann model for charged leaky dielectric multiphase fluids in the context of electrified jet simulations, which are of interest for a number of production technologies including electrospinning. The role of non-linear rheology on the dynamics of electrified jets is considered by exploiting the Carreau model for pseudoplastic fluids. We report exploratory simulations of charged droplets at rest and under a constant electric field, and we provide results for charged jet formation under electrospinning conditions.

This paper presents the shape optimization of a flat-type arborescent fluid distributor for the purpose of process intensification. A shape optimization algorithm based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is proposed with the objective of decreasing the flow resistance of such distributor at the constraint of constant fluid volume. Prototypes of the initial distributor as well as the optimized one are designed. Fluid distribution and hydraulic characteristics of these distributors are investigated numerically. Results show that the pressure drop of the optimized distributor is between 15.9% …
A Lattice Boltzmann formulation for relativistic fluids is presented and numerically verified through quantitative comparison with recent hydrodynamic simulations of relativistic shock-wave propagation in viscous quark-gluon plasmas. This formulation opens up the possibility of exporting the main advantages of Lattice Boltzmann methods to the relativistic context, which seems particularly useful for the simulation of relativistic fluids in complicated geometries.
A two-fluid Discrete Boltzmann Model(DBM) for compressible flows based on Ellipsoidal Statistical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook(ES-BGK) is presented. The model has flexible Prandtl number or specific heat ratio. Mathematically, the model is composed of two coupled Discrete Boltzmann Equations(DBE). Each DBE describes one component of the fluid. Physically, the model is equivalent to a macroscopic fluid model based on Navier-Stokes(NS) equations, and supplemented by a coarse-grained model for thermodynamic non-equilibrium behaviors. To obtain a flexible Prandtl number, a coefficient is introduced in th…
The present work reports the formation and the characterization of antipleptic and symplectic metachronal waves in 3D cilia arrays immersed in a two-fluid environment, with a viscosity ratio of 20. A coupled lattice-Boltzmann-Immersed-Boundary solver is used. The periciliary layer is confined between the epithelial surface and the mucus. Its thickness is chosen such that the tips of the cilia can penetrate the mucus. A purely hydrodynamical feedback of the fluid is taken into account and a coupling parameter $α$ is introduced allowing the tuning of both the direction of the wave propagation, a…

A fluctuating non-ideal fluid at its critical point is simulated with the Lattice Boltzmann method. It is demonstrated that the method, employing a Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional, correctly reproduces the static critical behavior associated with the Ising universality class. A finite-size scaling analysis is applied to determine the critical exponents related to the order parameter, compressibility and specific heat. A particular focus is put on finite-size effects and issues related to the global conservation of the order-parameter.
We present a cut-cell method for the simulation of 2D incompressible flows past obstacles. It consists in using the MAC scheme on cartesian grids and imposing Dirchlet boundary conditions for the velocity field on the boundary of solid structures following the Shortley-Weller formulation. In order to ensure local conservation properties, viscous and convecting terms are discretized in a finite volume way. The scheme is second order implicit in time for the linear part, the linear systems are solved by the use of the capacitance matrix method for non-moving obstacles. Numerical results of flows…
A systematic study is carried out on a fully resolved fluid-particle model which couples the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) using an immersed moving boundary technique. Similar algorithms have been reported in the past decade, however, the roles of major model parameters are yet to be fully understood. To examine various numerical errors, a series of benchmark cases with a wide range of Reynolds number are performed, starting from a single stationary particle to multiple moving particles. It is found that for flow with low and intermediate Reynolds numbers…
In this paper, a diffuse-interface lattice Boltzmann method (DI-LBM) is developed for fluid-particle interaction problems. In this method, the sharp interface between the fluid and solid is replaced by a thin but nonzero thickness transition region named diffuse interface, where the physical variables varies continuously. In order to describe the diffuse interface, we introduce a smooth function, which is similar to the order parameter in phase-field model or the volume fraction of solid phase in the partially saturated lattice Boltzmann method (PS-LBM). In addition, to depict the fluid-partic…
