We prove new sign uncertainty principles which vastly generalize the recent developments of Bourgain, Clozel & Kahane and Cohn & Gonçalves, and apply our results to a variety of spaces and operators. In particular, we establish new sign uncertainty principles for Fourier and Dini series, the Hilbert transform, the discrete Fourier and Hankel transforms, spherical harmonics, and Jacobi polynomials, among others. We present numerical evidence highlighting the relationship between the discrete and continuous sign uncertainty principles for the Fourier and Hankel transforms, which in turn are connected with the sphere packing problem via linear programming. Finally, we explore some connections between the sign uncertainty principle on the sphere and spherical designs.
The windowed offset linear canonical transform (WOLCT) can be identified as a generalization of the windowed linear canonical transform (WLCT). In this paper, we generalize several different uncertainty principles for the WOLCT, including Heisenberg uncertainty principle, Hardy's uncertainty principle, Beurling's uncertainty principle, Lieb's uncertainty principle, Donoho-Stark's uncertainty principle, Amrein-Berthier-Benedicks's uncertainty principle, Nazarov's uncertainty principle and Logarithmic uncertainty principle.
The aim of this paper is to prove some new uncertainty principles for the windowed Hankel transform. They include uncertainty principle for orthonormal sequence, local uncertainty principle, logarithmic uncertainty principle and Heisenberg-type uncertainty principle. As a side result, we obtain the Shapiro's dispersion theorem for the windowed Hankel transform.
In this paper, an analogous of Heisenberg inequality is established for Laguerre-Bessel transform. Also, a local uncertainty principle for this transform is investigate
This paper focuses on studying the Donoho-Stark's type uncertainty principle for the continuous Clifford wavelet transform. A brief review of Clifford algebra/analysis, Clifford wavelet transform and their properties is conducted. Next, such concepts are applied to develop an uncertainty principle based on Clifford wavelets.
By the important applications of Gabor transform in time-frequency analysis and signal analysis, in this paper, we consider the Gabor quaternion Fourier transform (GQFT), and we prove of it a version Benedicks-type uncertainty principle for GQFT and some local concentration uncertainty principles.
In this paper, the uncertainty principle of discrete signals associated with Quaternion Fourier transform is investigated. It suggests how sparsity helps in the recovery of missing frequency.
In this paper, we generalise Hardy's uncertainty principle to vector-valued functions, and hence to operators. The principle for operators can be formulated loosely by saying that the kernel of an operator cannot be localised near the diagonal if the spectrum is also localised.
We prove sharp Pitt's inequality for the Dunkl transform in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ with the corresponding weights. As an application, we obtain the logarithmic uncertainty principle for the Dunkl transform.
The Clifford Fourier transform (CFT) has been shown to be a powerful tool in the Clifford analysis. In this work, several uncertainty inequalities are established in the real Clifford algebra $Cl_{(p,q)}$, \ including the Hausdorf-Young inequality, and three qualitative uncertainty principles of Donoho-Stark.
Breitenberger's uncertainty principle on the torus $\mathbb{T}$ and its higher-dimensional analogue on $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ are well understood. We give describe an entire family of uncertainty principles on compact manifolds $(M,g)$, which includes the classical Heisenberg-Weyl uncertainty principle (for $M=B(0,1) \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ the unit ball with the flat metric) and the Goh-Goodman uncertainty principle (for $M=\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ with the canonical metric) as special cases. This raises a new geometric problem related to small-curvature low-distortion embeddings: given a function $f:M \r…
We construct $δ$-regular sets with $δ\ge \frac12$ for which the analog of the Bourgain--Dyatlov Fractal Uncertainty Principle fails for the Walsh--Fourier transform.
The aim of this paper is to prove new uncertainty principles for an integral operator $\tt$ with a bounded kernel for which there is a Plancherel theorem. The first of these results is an extension of Faris's local uncertainty principle which states that if a nonzero function $f\in L^2(\R^d,μ)$ is highly localized near a single point then $\tt (f)$ cannot be concentrated in a set of finite measure. The second result extends the Benedicks-Amrein-Berthier uncertainty principle and states that a nonzero function $f\in L^2(\R^d,μ)$ and its integral transform $\tt (f)$ cannot both have support of f…
In this survey, we present various forms of the uncertainty principle (Hardy, Heisenberg, Benedicks). We further give a new interpretation of the uncertainty principles as a statement about the time-frequency localization of elements of an orthonormal basis, which improves previous unpublished results of H. Shapiro. Finally, we show that Benedicks' result implies that solutions of the Shrödinger equation have some (appearently unnoticed) energy dissipation property.
We obtain a new version of the Uncertainty Principle for functions with Fourier transforms supported on a lacunary set of intervals. This is a generalization of Zygmund's theorem on lacunary trigonometric series to the real line in the spirit of the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem for relatively dense sets.
We introduce a notion of localization for dyadic functions, i.e. functions defined on the Cantor group. Localization is characterized by functional $UC_d$ similar to the Heisenberg uncertainty constant used for real-line functions. We are looking for dyadic analogs of quantitative uncertainty principles. To justify definition we use some test functions including dyadic scaling and wavelet functions.
In this paper, we define a new transform called the Gabor quaternionic Fourier transform (GQFT), which generalizes the classical windowed Fourier transform to quaternion valued-signals, we give several important properties such as the Plancherel formula and inversion formula. Finally, we establish the Heisenberg uncertainty principles for the GQFT.
The aim of this paper is establish the Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl uncertainty principle and Donho-Stark's uncertainty principle for the Weinstein $L^2$-multiplier operators.
We prove a new version of the Uncertainty Principle of the form $\int |f|^2 \lesssim \int_{E^c} |f|^2 + \int_{Σ^c}|\hat f|^2 $ where the sets $E$ and $Σ$ are $ε$-thin in the following sense: $|E \cap D(x, ρ_1(x))| \le ε|D(x, ρ_1(x))|$ and $|Σ\cap D(x, ρ_2(x))| \le ε|D(x, ρ_2(x))|$. This is an intermediate result between Logvinenko-Sereda's and Wolff's versions of the Uncertainty Principle.
This paper studies the uncertainty principle for spherical $h$-harmonic expansions on the unit sphere of $\mathbb{R}^d$ associated with a weight function invariant under a general finite reflection group, which is in full analogy with the classical Heisenberg inequality. Our proof is motivated by a new decomposition of the Dunkl-Laplace-Beltrami operator on the weighted sphere.
In this paper, we generalize the continuous quaternion shearlet transform on $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ to $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, called the multivariate two sided continuous quaternion shearlet transform. Using the two sided quaternion Fourier transform, we derive several important properties such as (reconstruction formula, reproducing kernel, plancherel's formula, etc.). We present several example of the multivariate two sided continuous quaternion shearlet transform. We apply the multivariate two sided continuous quaternion shearlet transform properties and the two sided quaternion Fourier transform to …
The aim of this paper is to establish a few uncertainty principles for the Fourier and the short-time Fourier transforms. Also, we discuss an analogue of Donoho--Stark uncertainty principle and provide some estimates for the size of the essential support of the short-time Fourier transform.
We give a new proof of Hardy's uncertainty principle, up to the end-point case, which is only based on calculus. The method allows us to extend Hardy's uncertainty principle to Schrödinger equations with non-constant coefficients. We also deduce optimal Gaussian decay bounds for solutions to these Schrödinger equations.
We study invertibility and compactness of positive Toeplitz operators associated to a continuous Parseval frame on a Hilbert space. As applications, we characterize compactness of affine and Weyl-Heisenberg localization operators as well as give uncertainty principles for the associated transforms.
In this paper we prove sharp weighted Hardy-type inequalities on Carnot groups with the homogeneous norm $N=u^{1/(2-Q)}$ associated to Folland's fundamental solution $u$ for the sub-Laplacian $Δ_{\mathbb{G}}$. We also prove uncertainty principle, Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg and Rellich inequalities on Carnot groups.
The aim of this paper is to prove an uncertainty principle for the representation of a vector in two bases. Our result extends previously known qualitative uncertainty principles into quantitative estimates. We then show how to transfer this result to the discrete version of the Short Time Fourier Transform. An application to trigonometric polynomials is also given.
Analytic number theorists usually seek to show that sequences which appear naturally in arithmetic are ``well-distributed'' in some appropriate sense. In various discrepancy problems, combinatorics researchers have analyzed limitations to equi-distribution, as have Fourier analysts when working with the ``uncertainty principle''. In this article we find that these ideas have a natural setting in the analysis of distributions of sequences in analytic number theory, formulating a general principle, and giving several examples.
The sign uncertainty principle of Bourgain, Clozel & Kahane asserts that if a function $f:\mathbb{R}^d\to \mathbb{R}$ and its Fourier transform $\widehat{f}$ are nonpositive at the origin and not identically zero, then they cannot both be nonnegative outside an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the origin. In this article, we establish some equivalent formulations of the sign uncertainty principle, and in particular prove that minimizing sequences exist within the Schwartz class when $d=1$. We further address a complementary sign uncertainty principle, and show that corresponding near-minimize…
Fractal uncertainty principle states that no function can be localized in both position and frequency near a fractal set. This article provides a review of recent developments on the fractal uncertainty principle and of their applications to quantum chaos, including lower bounds on mass of eigenfunctions on negatively curved surfaces and spectral gaps on convex co-compact hyperbolic surfaces.
We extend Hardy's uncertainty principle for a square integrable function and its Fourier transform to the multidimensional case using a symplectic diagonalization. We use this extension to show that Hardy's uncertainty principle is equivalent to a statement on the Wigner distribution of the function. We give a geometric interpretation of our results in terms of the notion of symplectic capacity of an ellipsoid. Furthermore, we show that Hardy's uncertainty principle is valid for a general Lagrangian frame of the phase space. Finally, we discuss an extension of Hardy's theorem for the Wigner di…
We prove an explicit formula for the dependence of the exponent in the fractal uncertainty principle of Bourgain-Dyatlov on the dimension and on the regularity constant for the regular set. In particular, this implies an explicit essential spectral gap for convex co-compact hyperbolic surfaces when the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set is close to 1.
