We theoretically demonstrate that the second-order topological insulator with robust corner states can be realized in two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators by applying an in-plane Zeeman field. Zeeman field breaks the time-reversal symmetry and thus destroys the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological phase. Nevertheless, it respects some crystalline symmetries and thus can protect the higher-order topological phase. By taking the Kane-Mele model as a concrete example, we find that spin-helical edge states along zigzag boundaries are gapped out by Zeeman field whereas in-gap corner state at the intersection between two zigzag edges arises, which is independent on the field orientation. We further show that the corner states are robust against the out-of-plane Zeeman field, staggered sublattice potentials, Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and the buckling of honeycomb lattices, making them experimentally feasible. Similar behaviors can also be found in the well-known Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model.
A higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) in two dimensions is an insulator without metallic edge states but with robust zero-dimensional topological boundary modes localized at its corners. Yet, these corner modes do not carry a clear signature of their topology as they lack the anomalous nature of helical or chiral boundary states. Here, we demonstrate using immunity tests that the corner modes found in the breathing kagome lattice represent a prime example of a mistaken identity. Contrary to previous theoretical and experimental claims, we show that these corner modes are inherently fragi…
Higher-order topological insulators in two dimensions have states that localize at their corners, called corner states. In this paper, we reveal characteristics of the penetration depth of their corner states by using the Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes model. First, we show that when we change the energy of the corner states toward the end of the edge gap by adding an on-site potential to the corner site, the penetration depth along the edge diverges toward infinity while the penetration depth into the bulk remaining finite. We analytically derive the corner-state wavefunction in a form of ellipti…
We discuss the change of the corner charge for noninteracting two dimensional insulators with inversion symmetry undergoing adiabatic evolution. We show that the change of the corner charge is accounted for by the adiabatic current flowing along the edges of the system. The study of systems with quasi-1D geometry is necessary to derive the analytical expression for the adiabatic current. This fact suggests that the change of the corner charge is neither a purely bulk nor edge effect, but rather a mixed one. The derived adiabatic current was examined and shows good agreement with the numerical …
The higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), with such as the topological corner states, emerge as a thriving topic in the field of topological physics. But few connections have been found for the HOTIs with the well explored first-order topological insulators described by the Z_2 index. However, most recently, a proposal asserts that a significant bridge can be established between the HOTIs and the Z_2 topological insulators. When subject to an in-plane Zeeman field, the corner states, the signature of the HOTIs, can be induced in a Z_2 topological insulator. Such Zeeman field can be prod…
We numerically and experimentally study corner states in a continuous elastic plate with em-bedded bolts in a hexagonal pattern. While preserving C6 crystalline symmetry, the system can transition from a topologically trivial to a non-trivial configuration. We create interfacial corners of 60° and 120° by adjoining trivial and non-trivial topological configurations. Due to the rich interaction between the bolts and the continuous elastic plate, we find a variety of corner states with and without topological origin. Notably, some of the corner states are highly localized and tunable. By taking …
We numerically demonstrate that the topological corner states residing in the corners of higher-order topological insulator possess non-Abelian braiding properties. Such topological corner states are Dirac fermionic modes other than Majorana zero-modes. We claim that Dirac fermionic modes protected by nontrivial topology also support non-Abelian braiding. An analytical description on such non-Abelian braiding is conducted based on the vortex-induced Dirac-type fermionic modes. The braiding operator for Dirac fermionic modes is also analytically derivated and compared with the Majorana zero-mod…
We consider a system consisting of two tunnel-coupled two-dimensional topological insulators proximitized by a top and bottom superconductor with a phase difference of $π$ between them. We show that this system exhibits a time-reversal invariant second-order topological superconducting phase characterized by the presence of a Kramers pair of Majorana corner states at all four corners of a rectangular sample. We furthermore investigate the effect of a weak time-reversal symmetry breaking perturbation and show that an in-plane Zeeman field leads to an even richer phase diagram exhibiting two non…
Higher-order topological superconductors and superfluids host lower-dimensional Majorana corner and hinge states since novel topology exhibitions on boundaries. While such topological nontrivial phases have been explored extensively, more possible schemes are necessary for engineering Majorana states. In this paper we propose Majorana corner states could be realized in a two-dimensional attractive quantum spin-Hall insulator with opposite in-plane Zeeman energy at two sublattice sites. The appropriate Zeeman field leads to the opposite Dirac mass for adjacent edges of a square sample, and natu…
The topology of insulators is usually revealed through the presence of gapless boundary modes: this is the so-called bulk-boundary correspondence. However, the many-body wavefunction of a crystalline insulator is endowed with additional topological properties that do not yield surface spectral features, but manifest themselves as (fractional) quantized electronic charges localized at the crystal boundaries. Here, we formulate such bulk-corner correspondence for the physical relevant case of materials with time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling. To so do we develop "partial" real-space …
Quadrupole topological insulators are a new class of topological insulators with quantized quadrupole moments, which support protected gapless corner states. The experimental demonstrations of quadrupole-topological insulators were reported in a series of artificial materials, such as photonic crystals, acoustic crystals, and electrical circuits. In all these cases, the underlying structures have discrete translational symmetry and thus are periodic. Here we experimentally realize two-dimensional aperiodic-quasicrystalline quadrupole-topological insulators by constructing them in electrical ci…
A two-dimensional quadrupole topological insulator on a square lattice is a typical example of a higher-order topological insulator. It hosts an edge state localized near each of its $90^{\circ}$ corners at an energy $E$ inside the band gap, where $E$ is set equal to zero for simplicity. Although the appearance of an edge state has been shown in simple systems with only $90^{\circ}$ corners, it is uncertain whether a similar localized state can appear at $E = 0$ near a complicated edge consisting of multiple $90^{\circ}$ and $270^{\circ}$ corners. Here, we present a numerical method to determi…
In a $d$-dimensional topological insulator of order $d$, there are zero energy states on its corners which have close relationship with its entanglement behaviors. We studied the bipartite entanglement spectra for different subsystem shapes and found that only when the entanglement boundary has corners matching the lattice, exact zero modes exist in the entanglement spectrum corresponding to the zero energy states caused by the same physical corners. We then considered finite size systems in which case these corner states are coupled together by long range hybridizations to form a multipartite…
To explore the non-Euclidean generalization of higher-order topological phenomena, we construct a higher-order topological insulator model in hyperbolic lattices by breaking the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) of quantum spin Hall insulators. We investigate three kinds of hyperbolic lattices, i.e., hyperbolic $\{4,5\}$, $\{8,3\}$ and $\{12,3\}$ lattices, respectively. The non-Euclidean higher-order topological behavior is characterized by zero-energy effective corner states appearing in hyperbolic lattices. By adjusting the variation period of the TRS breaking term, we obtain 4, 8 and 12 zero-ene…
Conventional $n$-dimensional topological superconductors (TSCs) have protected gapless $(n - 1)$-dimensional boundary states. In contrast to this, second-order TSCs are characterized by topologically protected gapless $(n - 2)$-dimensional states with usual gapped $(n - 1)$-boundaries. Here, we study a second-order TSC with a two-dimensional (2D) magnetic topological insulator (TI) proximity-coupled to a high-temperature superconductor, where Majorana bound states (MBSs) are localized at the corners of a square sample with gapped edge modes. Due to the mirror symmetry of the hybrid system cons…
High-order topological insulators (TIs) are a family of recently-predicted topological phases of matter obeying an extended topological bulk-boundary correspondence principle. For example, a two-dimensional (2D) second-order TI does not exhibit gapless one-dimensional (1D) topological edge states, like a standard 2D TI, but instead has topologically-protected zero-dimensional (0D) corner states. So far, higher-order TIs have been demonstrated only in classical mechanical and electromagnetic metamaterials exhibiting quantized quadrupole polarization. Here, we experimentally realize a second-ord…
Higher-order topological insulators are newly proposed topological phases of matter, whose bulk topology manifests as localized modes at two- or higher-dimensional lower boundaries. In this work, we propose the twisted bilayer graphenes with large angles as higher-order topological insulators, hosting topological corner charges. At large commensurate angles, the intervalley scattering opens up the bulk gap and the corner states occur at half filling. Based on both first-principles calculations and analytic analysis, we show the striking results that the emergence of the corner states do not de…
Higher-order topological insulators, which support lower-dimensional topological boundary states than the first-order topological insulators, have been intensely investigated in the integer dimensional systems. Here, we provide a new paradigm by presenting experimentally a higher-order topological phase in a fractal-dimensional system. Through applying the Benalcazar, Bernevig, and Hughes model into a Sierpinski carpet fractal lattice, we uncover a squeezed higher-order phase diagram featuring the abundant corner states, which consist of zero-dimensional outer corner states and 1.89-dimensiona…
We demonstrate that the presence of a localized state at the corner of an insulating domain is not always a predictor of a certain non-trivial higher-order topological invariant, even though they appear to co-exist in the same Hamiltonian parameter space. Our analysis of $C^n$-symmetric crystalline insulators and their multi-layer stacks reveals that topological corner states are not necessarily correlated with other well-established higher-order boundary observables, such as fractional corner charge or filling anomaly. In a $C^3$-symmetric breathing Kagome lattice, for example, we show that t…
Electric circuits are known to realize topological quadrupole insulators. We explore electric circuits made of capacitors and inductors forming the breathing Kagome and pyrochlore lattices. They are known to possess three phases (trivial insulator, higher-order topological insulator and metallic phases) in the tight-binding model. The topological phase is characterized by the emergence of zero-energy corner states. A topological phase transition is induced by tuning continuously the capacitance, which is possible by using variable capacitors. It is found that the two-point impedance yields hug…
We propose the concept of 2D non-Abelian topological insulator which can explain the energy distributions of the edge states and corner states in systems with parity-time symmetry. From the viewpoint of non-Abelian band topology, we establish the constraints on the 2D Zak phase and polarization. We demonstrate that the corner states in some 2D systems can be explained as the boundary mode of the 1D edge states arising from the multi-band non-Abelian topology of the system. We also propose the use of off-diagonal Berry phase as complementary information to assist the prediction of edge states i…
As platforms of Majorana modes, topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator)/superconductor (SC) heterostructures have attracted tremendous attention over the past decade. Here we substitute the topological insulator by its higher-order counterparts. Concretely, we consider second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) without time-reversal symmetry and investigate SOTI/SC heterostructures in both two and three dimensions. Remarkably, we find that such novel heterostructures provide natural realizations of second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) which host Majorana corner m…
We present a novel class of topological insulators, termed the Takagi topological insulators (TTIs), which is protected by the sublattice symmetry and spacetime inversion ($\mathcal P\mathcal T$) symmetry. The required symmetries for the TTIs can be realized on any bipartite lattice where the inversion exchanges sublattices. The protecting symmetries lead to the classifying space of Hamiltonians being unitary symmetric matrices, and therefore Takagi's factorization can be performed. Particularly, the global Takagi's factorization can (cannot) be done on a $3$D ($2$D) sphere. In 3D, there is a …
We investigate boundary multifractality of critical wave functions at the Anderson metal-insulator transition in two-dimensional disordered non-interacting electron systems with spin-orbit scattering. We show numerically that multifractal exponents at a corner with an opening angle θ=3π/2 are directly related to those near a straight boundary in the way dictated by conformal symmetry. This result extends our previous numerical results on corner multifractality obtained for θ< πto θ> π, and gives further supporting evidence for conformal invariance at criticality. We also propose a refinement o…
We show that unconventional boundary phenomena occur in the $3Q$ charge bond orders on the hexagonal lattices. At the Van Hove singularity with three nesting momenta, $3Q$ orders can trigger a $\text{C}_6$-symmetric insulator under bond modulations. On the kagome lattice, in-gap corner states appear in the energy spectrum and carry fractional corner charge $-2e/3$. Such corner phenomena originate from the corner filling anomaly and indicate a higher-order topological insulator. The in-gap corner states are also observed on the triangular lattice. The honeycomb lattice does not support fraction…
Pursuing topological phase and matter in a variety of systems is one central issue in current physical sciences and engineering. Motivated by the recent experimental observation of corner states in acoustic and photonic structures, we theoretically study the dipolar-coupled gyration motion of magnetic solitons on the two-dimensional breathing kagome lattice. We calculate the phase diagram and predict both the Tamm-Shockley edge modes and the second-order corner states when the ratio between alternate lattice constants is greater than a critical value. We show that the emerging corner states ar…
In this paper, we derive a general formula for the quantized fractional corner charge in two-dimensional C_n-symmetric higher-order topological insulators. We assume that the electronic states can be described by the Wannier functions and that the edges are charge neutral, but we do not assume vanishing bulk electric polarization. We expand the scope of the corner charge formula obtained in previous works by considering more general surface conditions, such as surfaces with higher Miller index and surfaces with surface reconstruction. Our theory is applicable even when the electronic states ar…
Recent theoretical studies have extended the Berry phase framework to account for higher electric multipole moments, quadrupole and octupole topological phases have been proposed. Although the two-dimensional quantized quadrupole insulators have been demonstrated experimentally, octupole topological phases have not previously been observed experimentally. Here we report on the experimental realization of classical analog of octupole topological insulator in the electric circuit system. Three-dimensional topolectrical circuits for realizing such topological phases are constructed experimentally…
The bulk-boundary correspondence is a generic feature of topological states of matter, reflecting the intrinsic relation between topological bulk and boundary states. For example, robust edge states propagate along the edges and corner states gather at corners in the two-dimensional first-order and second-order topological insulators, respectively. Here, we report two kinds of topological states hosting anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence in the extended two-dimensional dimerized lattice with staggered flux threading. At $\frac{1}{2}$-filling, we observe isolated corner states with no fract…
Topologically protected gapless edge states are phases of quantum matter which behave as massless Dirac fermions, immunizing against disorders and continuous perturbations. Recently, a new class of topological insulators (TIs) with topological corner states have been theoretically predicted in electric systems, and experimentally realized in two-dimensional (2D) mechanical and electromagnetic systems, electrical circuits, optical and sonic crystals, and elastic phononic plates. Here, we demonstrate a pseudospin-valley-coupled phononic TI, which simultaneously exhibits gapped edge states and to…
Second-order topological insulators (SOTI) exhibit protected gapless boundary states at their hinges or corners. In this paper, we propose a generic means to construct SOTIs in static and Floquet systems by coupling one-dimensional topological insulator wires along a second dimension through dimerized hopping amplitudes. The Hamiltonian of such SOTIs admits a Kronecker sum structure, making it possible for obtaining its features by analyzing two constituent one-dimensional lattice Hamiltonians defined separately in two orthogonal dimensions. The resulting topological corner states do not rely …
Topological multipole insulators are a class of higher order topological insulators (HOTI) in which robust fractional corner charges appear due to a quantized electric multipole moment of the bulk. This bulk-corner correspondence has been expressed in terms of a topological invariant computed using the eigenstates of the Wilson loop operator, a so called "nested Wilson loop" procedure. We show that, similar to the unitary Floquet operator describing periodically driven systems, the unitary Wilson loop operator can realize "anomalous" phases, that are topologically non-trivial despite having a …
Parafermions are a natural generalization of Majorana fermions. We consider a breathing Kagome lattice with complex hoppings by imposing $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ clock symmetry in the complex energy plane. It is a non-Hermitian generalization of the second-order topological insulator characterized by the emergence of topological corner states. We demonstrate that the topological corner states are parafermions in the present $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ clock-symmetric model. It is also shown that the model is realized in electric circuits properly designed, where the parafermion corner states are observed by impe…
Notion of square-root topological insulators have been recently generalized to higher-order topological insulators. In two-dimensional square-root higher-order topological insulators, emergence of in-gap corner states are inherited from the squared Hamiltonian which hosts higher-order topology. In this paper, we propose that the martini lattice model serves as a concrete example of higher-order topological insulators. Furthermore, we also propose a suquare-root higher-order topological insulator based on the martini model. Specifically, we propose that the honeycomb lattice model with two-site…
Interaction induced topological states remain one of the fascinating phases in condensed matter physics. The exciton condensate has recently sparked renewed interest due to the discovery of new candidate materials and its driving force to realize exotic topological states. In this work, we explore the exciton orders induced high-order topology in the bilayer quantum spin Hall insulators and find that the topological excitonic corner states can be realized by tuning the gate and magnetic field. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied to the system, two or four excitonic boundary-obstructed cor…
Two-dimensional higher-order topology is usually studied in (nearly) particle-hole symmetric models, so that an edge gap can be opened within the bulk one. But more often deviates the edge anticrossing even into the bulk, where corner states are difficult to pinpoint. We address this problem in a graphene-based $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator with spin-orbit coupling and in-plane magnetization both originating from substrates through a Slater-Koster multi-orbital model. The gapless helical edge modes cross inside the bulk, where is also located the magnetization-induced edge gap. After de…
We study surface states of topological crystalline insulators and superconductors protected by inversion symmetry. These fall into the category of "higher-order" topological insulators and superconductors which possess surface states that propagate along one-dimensional curves (hinges) or are localized at some points (corners) on the surface. We show that the surface states of higher-order topological insulators and superconductors can be thought of as globally irremovable topological defects and provide a complete classification of these inversion-protected phases in any spatial dimension for…
Square-root topological insulators are recently-proposed intriguing topological insulators, where the topologically nontrivial nature of Bloch wave functions is inherited from the square of the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we propose that higher-order topological insulators can also have their square-root descendants, which we term square-root higher-order topological insulators. There, emergence of in-gap corner states is inherited from the squared Hamiltonian which hosts higher-order topology. As an example of such systems, we investigate the tight-binding model on a decorated honeycomb latti…
The modern theory of electric polarization in crystals associates the dipole moment of an insulator with a Berry phase of its electronic ground state [1, 2]. This concept constituted a breakthrough that not only solved the long-standing puzzle of how to calculate dipole moments in crystals, but also lies at the core of the theory of topological band structures in insulators and superconductors, including the quantum anomalous Hall insulator [3, 4] and the quantum spin Hall insulator [5-7], as well as quantized adiabatic pumping processes [8-10]. A recent theoretical proposal extended the Berry…
Recently discovered photonic higher-order topological insulators enable unprecedented flexibility in the robust localization of light in structures of different dimensionality. While the potential of the two-dimensional systems is currently under active investigation, only a few studies explore the physics of the three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators. Here we propose a three-dimensional structure with cubic symmetry exhibiting vanishing bulk polarization but nonzero corner charge and hosting a zero-dimensional corner state mediated by the long-range interactions. We trace the e…
In this paper, we theoretically study the Floquet engineering of two dimensional photonic waveguide arrays in three types of lattices: honeycomb lattice with Kekule distortion, breathing square lattice and breathing Kagome lattice. The Kekule distortion factor or the breathing factor in the corresponding lattice is periodically changed along the axial direction of the photonic waveguide with frequency $ω$. Within certain ranges of $ω$, the Floquet corner states in the Floquet band gap of quasi-energy spectrum are found, which are localized at the corner of the finite two-dimensional arrays. Du…
A second-order topological insulator on a two-dimensional square lattice hosts zero-dimensional states inside a band gap. They are localized near $90^{\circ}$ and $270^{\circ}$ corners constituting an edge of the system. When the edge is in a staircase form consisting of these two corners, two families of edge states (i.e., one-dimensional states localized near the edge) appear as a result of the hybridization of zero-dimensional states. We identify symmetry that makes them gapless. We also show that a pair of nontrivial winding numbers associated with this symmetry guarantee a gapless spectru…
