We introduce the notion of E-depth of graded modules over polynomial rings to measure the depth of certain Ext modules. First, we characterize graded modules over polynomial rings with (sufficiently) large E-depth as those modules whose (sufficiently) partial general initial submodules preserve the Hilbert function of local cohomology modules supported at the irrelevant maximal ideal, extending a result of Herzog and Sbarra on sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules. Second, we describe the cone of local cohomology tables of modules with sufficiently high E-depth, building on previous work of the second author and Smirnov. Finally, we obtain a non-Artinian version of a socle-lemma proved by Kustin and Ulrich.
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field. We describe the extremal rays and the facets of the cone of local cohomology tables of finitely generated graded $R$-modules of dimension at most two. Moreover, we show that any point inside the cone can be written as a finite linear combination, with positive rational coefficients, of points belonging to the extremal rays of the cone. We also provide algorithms to obtain decompositions in terms of extremal points and facets.
We show that the cohomology table of any coherent sheaf on projective space is a convergent--but possibly infinite--sum of positive real multiples of the cohomology tables of what we call supernatural sheaves.
It is proved that if one of the finite modules M and N, over a local ring R, has reducible complexity and has finite Gorenstein dimension then the depth formula holds, provided TorR_i(M,N) = 0 for i>>0. We also study the vanishing of cohomology of a module of finite complete intersection dimension.
Mats Boij and Jonas Soederberg (math.AC/0611081) have conjectured that the Betti table of a Cohen-Macaulay module over a polynomial ring can be decomposed in a certain way as a positive linear combination of Betti tables of modules with pure resolutions. We prove, over any field, a strengthened form of their conjecture. Applications include a proof of the Multiplicity Conjecture of Huneke and Srinivasan and a proof of the convexity of a fan naturally associated to the Young lattice. We also characterize the rational cone of all cohomology tables of vector bundles on projective spaces in terms …
The Betti numbers of a graded module over the polynomial ring form a table of numerical invariants that refines the Hilbert polynomial. A sequence of papers sparked by conjectures of Boij and Söderberg have led to the characterization of the possible Betti tables up to rational multiples---that is, to the rational cone generated by the Betti tables. We will summarize this work by describing the cone and the closely related cone of cohomology tables of vector bundles on projective space, and we will give new, simpler proofs of some of the main results. We also explain some of the applications o…
The Frobenius depth denoted by F-depth defined by Hartshorne-Speiser in 1977 and later by Lyubeznik in 2006, in a different way, for rings of positive characteristic. The first aim of the present paper is to compare the F-depth with formal grade and reprove some results of Lyubeznik using formal local cohomology. Then the endomorphism rings of local cohomology modules will be considered. As an application, we reprove the results due to Huneke-Koh in positive characteristic and Lyubeznik in characteristic zero on the annihilators of local cohomology modules.
The asymptotic stability of several homological invariants of the graded pieces of a graded module has attracted quite a lot of attention over the last decades. We provide in this text several stability results together with estimates of the degree from which it stabilizes. Before we establish these regularity results, we prove several facts about depth and cohomological dimension with respect to a finitely generated ideal and about Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a graded module.
We compute some numerical invariants of local cohomology of the ring of invariants by a finite group, mainly in the modular case. Also, we present some applications. In particular, we study Cohen-Macaulay property of modular invariants from the viewpoints of depth, Serre's condition and the relevant generalizations (e.g., the Buchsbaum property, etc). The situation in the local case is different from the global case.
In this article, we study certain local cohomology modules over $F$-pure rings. We give sufficient conditions for the vanishing of some Lyubeznik numbers, derive a formula for computing these invariants when the $F$-pure ring is standard graded and, by its means, we provide some new examples of Lyubeznik tables. We study associated primes of certain Ext-modules, showing that they are all compatible ideals. Finally, we focus on properties that Lyubeznik numbers detect over a globally $F$-split projective variety.
Auslander's depth formula for pairs of Tor-independent modules over a regular local ring, depth(M \otimes N) = depth(M) + depth(N) - depth(R), has been generalized in several directions over a span of four decades. In this paper we establish a depth formula that holds for every pair of Tate Tor-independent modules over a Gorenstein local ring. It subsumes previous eneralizations of Auslander's formula and yields exact bounds for vanishing of cohomology over certain Gorenstein rings.
Homology decomposition techniques are a powerful tool used in the analysis of the homotopy theory of (classifying) spaces. The associated Bousfield-Kan spectral sequences involve higher derived limits of the inverse limit functor. We study the impact of depth conditions on the vanishing of these higher limits and apply our theory in several cases. We will show that the depth of Stanley-Reisner algebras can be characterized in combinatorial terms of the underlying simplicial complexes, the depth of group cohomology in terms of depth of group cohomology of centralizers of elementary abelian subg…
Let $(R,\frak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring, $I$ an ideal of $R$ and $N$ a finitely generated $R$-module. Let $k{\ge}-1$ be an integer and $ r=\depth_k(I,N)$ the length of a maximal $N$-sequence in dimension $>k$ in $I$ defined by M. Brodmann and L. T. Nhan ({Comm. Algebra, 36 (2008), 1527-1536). For a subset $S\subseteq \Spec R$ we set $S_{{\ge}k}={\p\in S\mid\dim(R/\p){\ge}k}$. We first prove in this paper that $\Ass_R(H^j_I(N))_{\ge k}$ is a finite set for all $j{\le}r$}. Let $\fN=\oplus_{n\ge 0}N_n$ be a finitely generated graded $\fR$-module, where $\fR$ is a finitely generated standard…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, and let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module. For a non-negative integer $t$, we prove that $H_{\fa}^t(M)$ is $\fa$-cofinite whenever $H_{\fa}^t(M)$ is Artinian and $H_{\fa}^i(M)$ is $\fa$-cofinite for all $i<t$. This result, in particular, characterizes the $\fa$-cofiniteness property of local cohomology modules of certain regular local rings. Also, we show that for a local ring $(R,\fm)$, $f-\depth(\fa,M)$ is the least integer $i$ such that $H_{\fa}^i(M)\ncong H_{\fm}^i(M)$. This result in conjunction with the first one, yiel…
For a connected Noetherian unstable algebra $R$ over the mod $p$ Steenrod algebra, we prove versions of theorems of Duflot and Carlson on the depth of $R$, originally proved when $R$ is the mod $p$ cohomology ring of a finite group. This recovers the aforementioned results, and also proves versions of them when $R$ is the mod $p$ cohomology ring of a compact Lie group, a profinite group with Noetherian cohomology, a Kac--Moody group, a discrete group of finite virtual cohomological dimension, as well as for certain other discrete groups. More generally, our results apply to certain finitely ge…
We investigate small $p$-groups with cohomology rings of depth higher than predicted by Duflot's theorem. In these groups, a sampling would suggest several naive conjectures about the degrees of the additional regular sequence elements. We arrive at counterexamples to the idea that all cohomology rings exceeding Duflot's bound have degree 2 regular sequence elements past Duflot's bound as well as to the idea that regular sequences can be pulled back, preserving degrees, along a field extension.
A generalization of Grothendieck's non-vanishing theorem is proved for a module which is finite over a local homomorphism. It is also proved that the Gorenstein injective dimension of such a module, if finite, is bounded below by its Krull dimension and is equal to the supremum of the depths of the localizations of the ring over primes in the support of the module.
We present an in-depth exploration of the module structures of local (co)homology modules (moreover, for complexes) over the completion $\widehat R^{\mathfrak a}$ of a commutative noetherian ring $R$ with respect to a proper ideal $\mathfrak a$. In particular, we extend Greenlees-May Duality and MGM Equivalence to track behavior over $\widehat R^{\mathfrak a}$, not just over $R$. We apply this to the study of two recent versions of homological finiteness for complexes, and to certain isomorphisms, with a view toward further applications. We also discuss subtleties and simplifications in the co…
Let $\mathfrak{a}$ be an ideal of a local ring $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ with $c = \mathrm{cd}(\mathfrak{a},R)$ the cohomological dimension of $\mathfrak{a}$ in $R$. In the case that $c=\dim R$, we first give a bound for depth~$D(H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R))$, where $c>2$ and $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ is complete. Later, $H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R) \otimes_R H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R)$, $D(H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R)) \otimes_R D(H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R))$ and $H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R) \otimes_R D(H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R))$ are examined. In the case $c=\dim R-1$, the set Att$_R H^c_\mathfrak{a}(R)$ is considered.
In this paper we study some cohomological properties of non-standard multigraded modules and Veronese transforms of them. Among others numerical characters, we study the generalized depth of a module and we see that it is invariant by taking a Veronese transform. We prove some vanishing theorems for the local cohomology modules of a multigraded module; as a corollary of these results we get that the depth of a Veronese module is asymptotically constant.
Let $(R,\m)$ be a Noetherian local ring $I, J$ two ideals of $R$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R-$module. It is first shown that for $k\geq -1$ the integer $r_k = \depth_k(I,J^nM/J^{n+1}M)$, it is the length of a maximal $(J^nM/J^{n+1}M)-$sequence in dimension $>k$ in $I$ defined by M. Brodmann and L. T. Nhan \cite{BN}, becomes for large $n$ independent of $n$. Then we prove in this paper that the sets $\bigcup_{j\le r_k}\Ass_R(H^j_I(J^nM/J^{n+1}M))$ with $k=-1$ or $k=0$, and $\bigcup_{j\le r_1}\Ass_R(H^j_I(J^nM/J^{n+1}M))\cup\{\m\}$ are stable for large $n$. We also obtain similar results for…
Let $S$ and $T$ be local rings with common residue field $k$, let $R$ be the fiber product $S \times_k T$, and let $M$ be an $S$-module. The Poincaré series $P^R_M$ of $M$ has been expressed in terms of $P^S_M$, $P^S_k$ and $P^T_k$ by Kostrikin and Shafarevich, and by Dress and Krämer. Here, an explicit minimal resolution, as well as theorems on the structure of $\Ext_R(k,k)$ and $\Ext_R(M,k)$ are given that illuminate these equalities. Structure theorems for the cohomology modules of fiber products of modules are also given. As an application of these results, we compute the depth of cohomolo…
Boij-Söderberg theory describes the Betti diagrams of graded modules over the polynomial ring up to multiplication by a rational number. Analog Eisenbud-Schreyer theory also describes the cohomology tables of vector bundles on projective spaces up to rational multiple. We give an introduction and survey of these newly developed areas.
We characterize the cone of GL-equivariant Betti tables of Cohen-Macaulay modules of codimension 1, up to rational multiple, over the coordinate ring of square matrices. This result serves as the base case for `Boij-Söderberg theory for Grassmannians', with the goal of characterizing the cones of GL_k-equivariant Betti tables of modules over the coordinate ring of k x n matrices, and, dually, cohomology tables of vector bundles on the Grassmannian Gr(k, C^n). The proof uses Hall's Theorem on perfect matchings in bipartite graphs to compute the extremal rays of the cone, and constructs the corr…
Given a Serre class $\mathcal{S}$ of modules, we compare the containment of the Koszul homology, Ext modules, Tor modules, local homology, and local cohomology in $\mathcal{S}$ up to a given bound $s \geq 0$. As some applications, we give a full characterization of noetherian local homology modules. Further, we establish a comprehensive vanishing result which readily leads to the formerly known descriptions of the numerical invariants width and depth in terms of Koszul homology, local homology, and local cohomology. Also, we immediately recover a few renowned vanishing criteria scattered about…
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring and let $M$ be an $R$-module which is a relative Cohen-Macaulay with respect to a proper ideal $\fa$ of $R$ and set $n:=\h_{M}\fa$. We prove that $\ind M<\infty$ if and only if $\ind\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$ and that $\ind\H^{n}_\fa(M)=\ind M-n$. We also prove that if $R$ has a dualizing complex and $\Gid_{R} M<\infty$, then $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$ and $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)=\Gid_{R} M-n$. Moreover if $R$ and $M$ are Cohen-Macaulay, then it is proved that $\Gid_{R} M<\infty$ whenever $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$. Next, for a finitely ge…
Let $R$ be a Noetherian ring, $I$ and $J$ two ideals of $R$ and $t$ an integer. Let $S$ be the class of Artinian $R$-modules, or the class of all $R$-modules $N$ with $\dim_RN\leq k$, where $k$ is an integer. It is proved that $\inf\{i: H^{i}_{I,J}(M)\notin S\}=\inf\{S-\depth_\frak{a}(M): \frak{a}\in \tilde{\rm W}(I,J)\}$, where $M$ is a finitely generated $R$-module, or is a $ZD$-module such that $M/\frak{a}M\notin S$ for all $\frak{a}\in \tilde{\rm W}(I,J)$. Let $\Supp_R H^{i}_{I,J}(M)$ be a finite subset of $\Max(R)$ for all $i<t$. It is shown that there are maximal ideals $\frak m_1, \frak…
Let $R=\mathbb{C}[\{x_{ij}\}]$ be the ring of polynomial functions in $mn$ variables where $m> n$. Set $X$ to be the $m\times n$ matrix in these variables and $I:=I_n(X)$ the ideal of maximal minors of $X$. We consider the rings $R/I^t$; for $t\gg 0$ the depth of $R/I^t$ is equal to $n^2-1$, and we show that each local cohomology module $H^{n^2-1}_{\frak{m}}(R/I^t)$ is a cyclic $R$-module. We also compute the annihilator of $H^{n^2-1}_{\frak{m}}(R/I^t)$ thereby completely determining its $R$-module structure. In the case that $X$ is a $n\times (n-1)$ matrix we describe a map between the Koszul…
It is a well-known result that, in projective space over a field, every set-theoretical complete intersection of positive dimension in connected in codimension one (Hartshorne [H1,3.4.6] or [H2, Theorem 1.3]). Another important connectedness result is that a local ring with disconnected punctured sprectrum has depth at most $1$ ([H1, Proposition 2.1]). The two results are related, Hartshorne calls the latter "the keystone to the proof" of the former (loc. cit). In this short note we show that the latter result generalizes smoothly from set-theoretical to cohomologically complete intersections,…
Boij-Söderberg theory characterizes syzygies of graded modules and sheaves on projective space. This paper continues earlier work with S. Sam, extending the theory to the setting of $GL_k$-equivariant modules and sheaves on Grassmannians. Algebraically, we study modules over a polynomial ring in $k n$ variables, thought of as the entries of a $k \times n$ matrix. We give equivariant analogues of two important features of the ordinary theory: the Herzog-Kühl equations and the pairing between Betti and cohomology tables. As a necessary step, we also extend previous results, concerning the base c…
We prove that over a commutative noetherian ring the three approaches to introducing depth for complexes: via Koszul homology, via Ext modules, and via local cohomology, all yield the same invariant. Using this result, we establish a far reaching generalization of the classical Auslander-Buchsbaum formula for the depth of finitely generated modules of finite projective dimension. We extend also Iversen's amplitude inequality to unbounded complexes. As a corollary we deduce: Given a local homomorphism Q-->R, if there is a non-zero finitely generated R-module that has finite flat dimension both …
Let \fa be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring R and M a finitely generated R-module. We explore the behavior of the two notions f_{\fa}(M), the finiteness dimension of M with respect to \fa, and, its dual notion q_{\fa}(M), the Artinianess dimension of M with respect to \fa. When (R,\fm) is local and r:=f_{\fa}(M) is less than f_{\fa}^{\fm}(M), the \fm-finiteness dimension of M relative to \fa, we prove that H^r_{\fa}(M) is not Artinian, and so the filter depth of \fa on M doesn't exceeds f_{\fa}(M). Also, we show that if M has finite dimension and H^i_{\fa}(M) is Artinian for all i>t, …
