Homology decomposition techniques are a powerful tool used in the analysis of the homotopy theory of (classifying) spaces. The associated Bousfield-Kan spectral sequences involve higher derived limits of the inverse limit functor. We study the impact of depth conditions on the vanishing of these higher limits and apply our theory in several cases. We will show that the depth of Stanley-Reisner algebras can be characterized in combinatorial terms of the underlying simplicial complexes, the depth of group cohomology in terms of depth of group cohomology of centralizers of elementary abelian subgroups, and the depth of polynomial invariants in terms of depth of polynomial invariants of point-wise stabilizer subgroups. The latter two applications follow from the analysis of an algebraic version of centralizer decompositions in terms of Lannes' $T$-functor.
We relate the construction of groups which realize saturated fusion systems and signaliser functors with homology decompositions of p-local finite groups. We prove that the cohomology ring of Robinson's construction is in some precise sense very close to the cohomology ring of the fusion system it realizes.
We extend Dwyer's sharp subgroup homology decomposition of the classifying space of a finite group to arbitrary saturated fusion systems and arbitrary Mackey functors.
In this paper we present a new approach to computing homology (with field coefficients) and persistent homology. We use concepts from discrete Morse theory, to provide an algorithm which can be expressed solely in terms of simple graph theoretical operations. We use iterated Morse decomposition, which allows us to sidetrack many problems related to the standard discrete Morse theory. In particular, this approach is provably correct in any dimension.
Carlsson's construction is a simplicial group whose geometric realization is the loop space of the 1-stunted reduced Borel construction. Our main results are: i) Given a pointed simplicial set acted upon by the discrete cyclic group C_2 of order 2, if the orbit projection has a section, then this loop space has a mod 2 homology decomposition; ii) If the reduced diagonal map of the C_2-invariant set is homologous to zero, then the pinched sets in the above homology decomposition themselves have homology decompositions in terms of the C_2-invariant set and the orbit space. Result i) generalizes …
In this paper, we study the equivariant homotopy type of a connected sum of linear actions on complex projective planes defined by Hambleton and Tanase. These actions are constructed for cyclic groups of odd order. We construct cellular filtrations on the connected sum using spheres inside unitary representations. A judicious choice of filtration implies a splitting on equivariant homology for general cyclic groups under a divisibility hypothesis, and in all cases for those of prime power order.
We establish a decomposition of stable homology of automorphism groups of free groups with polynomial contravariant coefficients in term of functor homology. This allows several explicit computations, intersecting results obtained by independent methods by O. Randal-Williams and extending some of them. Our methods rely on the investigation of Kan extensions associated to several categories of free groups, the extension of a cancellation criterium for homology with polynomial coefficients due to Scorichenko, Galatius Theorem identifying the stable homology of automorphism groups of free groups t…
The paper describes a natural splitting in the rational homology and homotopy of the spaces of long knots. This decomposition presumably arises from the cabling maps in the same way as a natural decomposition in the homology of loop spaces arises from power maps. The generating function for the Euler characteristics of the terms of this splitting is presented. Based on this generating function we show that both the homology and homotopy ranks of the spaces in question grow at least exponentially. Using natural graph-complexes we show that this splitting on the level of the bialgebra of chord d…
Let G be a finite group and p a prime dividing its order. We define new collections of p-subgroups of G. We study the homotopy relations among them and with the standard collections of p-subgroups. We determine their ampleness and sharpness properties.
A collection C of subgroups of a finite group G can give rise to three different standard formulas for the cohomology of G in terms of either: the subgroups in C; or their centralizers; or their normalizers. We give a short but systematic study of the relationship among such formulas for nine standard collections C of p-subgroups, obtaining some new formulas in the process. To do this, we exhibit some sufficient conditions on the poset C which imply comparison results.
We investigate combinatorial dynamical systems on simplicial complexes considered as {\em finite topological spaces}. Such systems arise in a natural way from sampling dynamics and may be used to reconstruct some features of the dynamics directly from the sample. We study the homological persistence of {\em Morse decompositions} of such systems, an important descriptor of the dynamics, as a tool for validating the reconstruction. Our framework can be viewed as a step toward extending the classical persistence theory to "vector cloud" data. We present experimental results on two numerical examp…
In the case of a compact orientable pseudomanifold, a well-known theorem of M. Goresky and R. MacPherson says that the cap product with a fundamental class factorizes through the intersection homology groups. In this work, we show that this classical cap product is compatible with a cap product in intersection (co)-homology, that we have previously introduced. If the pseudomanifold is also normal, for any commutative ring of coefficients, the existence of a classical Poincaré duality isomorphism is equivalent to the existence of an isomorphism between the intersection homology groups correspon…
Weighted hypergraphs are generalizations of weighted simplicial complexes. In recent years, weighted Laplacians of weighted simplicial complexes have been studied. In 2016, as a generalization of the homology of simplicial complexes, the embedded homology of hypergraphs was constructed. In this paper, we generalize the weighted Laplacians of weighted simplicial complexes to weighted hypergraphs. We study the relations between the weighted Laplacians and the weighted embedded homology of weighted hypergraphs. We generalize the Hodge decompositions of weighted simplicial complexes to weighted hy…
We study general properties of Hodge-type decompositions of cyclic and Hochschild homology of universal enveloping algebras of (DG) Lie algebras. Our construction generalizes the operadic construction of cyclic homology of Lie algebras due to Getzler and Kapranov. We give a topological interpretation of such Lie Hodge decompositions in terms of $S^1$-equivariant homology of the free loop space of a simply connected topological space. We prove that the canonical derived Poisson structure on a universal enveloping algebra arising from a cyclic pairing on the Koszul dual coalgebra preserves the H…
Using the orbicell decomposition of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces studied previously, a chain complex based on semistable ribbon graphs is constructed which is an extension of Konsevich's graph homology.
We introduce a notion of harmonic chain for chain complexes over fields of positive characteristic. A list of conditions for when a Hodge decomposition theorem holds in this setting is given and we apply this theory to finite CW complexes. An explicit construction of the harmonic chain within a homology class is described when applicable. We show how the coefficients of usual discrete harmonic chains due to Eckmann can be reduced to localizations of the integers, allowing us to compare classical harmonicity with the notion introduced here. We focus on applications throughout, including CW deco…
We generalise a fundamental graph-theoretical fact, stating that every element of the cycle space of a graph is a sum of edge-disjoint cycles, to arbitrary continua. To achieve this we replace graph cycles by topological circles, and replace the cycle space of a graph by a new homology group for continua which is a quotient of the first singular homology group $H_1$. This homology seems to be particularly apt for studying spaces with infinitely generated $H_1$, e.g. infinite graphs or fractals.
The purpose of this expository paper is to explain how the Fargues-Fontaine curve and its decomposition into a punctured curve and the formal neighborhood of the puncture naturally arise from various forms of topological cyclic homology and maps between them.
In this paper, we deal with stable homology computations with twisted coefficients for mapping class groups of surfaces and of 3-manifolds, automorphism groups of free groups with boundaries and automorphism groups of certain right-angled Artin groups. On the one hand, the computations are led using semidirect product structures arising naturally from these groups. On the other hand, we compute the stable homology with twisted coefficients by FI-modules. This notably uses a decomposition result of the stable homology with twisted coefficients for pre-braided monoidal categories proved in this …
We show that the monodromy operator at infinity plus the decomposition of the homology given by the vanishing cycles completely determine the homology monodromy representation of any complex polynomial.
This paper interprets Hesselholt and Madsen's real topological Hochschild homology functor THR in terms of the multiplicative norm construction. We show that THR satisfies cofinality and Morita invariance, and that it is suitably multiplicative. We then calculate its geometric fixed points and its Mackey functor of components, and show a decomposition result for group-algebras. Using these structural results we determine the homotopy type of THR($\mathbb{F}_p$) and show that its bigraded homotopy groups are polynomial on one generator over the bigraded homotopy groups of $H\mathbb{F}_p$. We th…
A quandle is a set that has a binary operation satisfying three conditions corresponding to the Reidemeister moves. Homology theories of quandles have been developed in a way similar to group homology, and have been applied to knots and knotted surfaces. In this paper, a homology theory is defined that unifies group and quandle homology theories. A quandle that is a union of groups with the operation restricting to conjugation on each group component is called a multiple conjugation quandle (MCQ, defined rigorously within). In this definition, compatibilities between the group and quandle oper…
