Let G be a finite group and p a prime dividing its order. We define new collections of p-subgroups of G. We study the homotopy relations among them and with the standard collections of p-subgroups. We determine their ampleness and sharpness properties.
We show that elementary amenable groups, which have a bound on the orders of their finite subgroups, admit a finite dimensional model for the classifying space with virtually cyclic isotropy.
We show that a finitely generated abelian group $G$ of torsion-free rank $n\geq 1$ admits a $n+r$ dimensional model for the classifying space with isotropy in the family of subgroups of torsion-free rank less than or equal to $r\geq 0$.
We prove that, for $n\geq 3$, the minimal dimension of a model of the classifying space of the full braid group $B_n$, and of the pure braid group $P_n$, with respect to the family of virtually cyclic groups is $n$.
The spaces BG_2 and BDI(4) have the property that their mod 2 cohomology is given by the rank 3 and 4 Dickson invariants respectively. Associated with these spaces one has for q odd the classifying spaces of the finite groups BG_2(q)and the exotic family of classifying spaces of 2-local finite groups BSol(q). In this article compute the mod 2 loop space homology of the 2-completed classifying space of G_2(q) and of BSol(q) for all odd primes q, as algebras over the Steenrod algebra, and the associated Bockstein spectral sequences.
Given a group $G$ and a family of subgroups $\mathcal{F}$, we consider its classifying space $E_{\mathcal F}G$ with respect to $\mathcal{F}$. When $\mathcal F = \mathcal{VC}yc$ is the family of virtually cyclic subgroups, Juan-Pineda and Leary conjectured that a group admits a finite model for this classifying space if and only if it is virtually cyclic. By establishing a connection to conjugacy growth we can show that this conjecture holds for linear groups. We investigate a similar question that was asked by Lück--Reich--Rognes--Varisco for the family of cyclic subgroups. Finally, we constru…
For certain contractible G-CW-complexes and F a family of subgroups of G, we construct a spectral sequence converging to the F-Bredon cohomology of G with E1-terms given by the F-Bredon cohomology of the stabilizer subgroups. As applications, we obtain several corollaries concerning the cohomological and geometric dimensions of the classifying space for the family F. We also introduce a hierarchically defined class of groups which contains all countable elementary amenable groups and countable linear groups of characteristic zero, and show that if a group G is in this class, then G has finite …
We determine the large scale geometry of the minimal displacement set of a hyperbolic isometry of a systolic complex. As a consequence, we describe the centraliser of such an isometry in a systolic group. Using these results, we construct a low-dimensional classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups of a group acting properly on a systolic complex. Its dimension coincides with the topological dimension of the complex if the latter is at least four. We show that graphical small cancellation complexes are classifying spaces for proper actions and that the groups acting on them…
We study asymptotic behavior of the dimensions of the homology groups of subgroups of finite index in finitely generated subgroups of pro-$p$ extension of centralizers of free pro-$p$ groups. We also prove group theoretic structure properties of such pro-$p$ groups that are of independent interest.
We prove a representation stability result for the second homology groups of Torelli subgroups of mapping class groups and automorphism groups of free groups. This strengthens the results of Boldsen-Hauge Dollerup and Day-Putman. We also prove a new representation stability result for the homology of certain congruence subgroups, partially improving upon the work of Putman-Sam. These results follow from a general theorem on syzygies of certain modules with finite polynomial degree.
This thesis concerns the study of the Bredon cohomological and geometric dimensions of a discrete group $G$ with respect to a family $\mathfrak{F}$ of subgroups of $G$. With that purpose, we focus on building finite-dimensional models for $\operatorname{E}_{\mathfrak{F}} \left( G \right)$. The cases of the family $\mathfrak{Fin}$ of finite subgroups of a group and the family $\mathfrak{VC}$ of virtually cyclic subgroups of a group have been widely studied and many tools have been developed to relate the classifying spaces for $\mathfrak{VC}$ with those for $\mathfrak{Fin}$. Given a discrete gr…
Given a group G, we consider its classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups. We show for many groups, including for example, one-relator groups, acylindrically hyperbolic groups, 3-manifold groups and CAT(0) cube groups, that they do not admit a finite model for this classifying space unless they are virtually cyclic. This settles a conjecture due to Juan-Pineda and Leary for these classes of groups.
The set of all closed subgroups of a profinite carries a natural profinite topology. This space of subgroups can be classified up to homeomorphism in many cases, and tight bounds placed on its complexity as expressed by its scattered height.
We investigate the structure of the minimal displacement set in $8$-located complexes with the SD'-property. We show that such set embeds isometrically into the complex. Since $8$-location and simple connectivity imply Gromov hyperbolicity, the minimal displacement set in such complex is systolic. Using these results, we construct a low-dimensional classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups of a group acting properly on an $8$-located complex with the SD'-property.
We describe the (co)homology of a certain family of normal subgroups of right-angled Artin groups that contain the commutator subgroup, as modules over the quotient group. We do so in terms of (skew) commutative algebra of squarefree monomial ideals.
Let IA_n be the Torelli subgroup of Aut(F_n). We give an explicit finite set of generators for H_2(IA_n) as a GL_n(Z)-module. Corollaries include a version of surjective representation stability for H_2(IA_n), the vanishing of the GL_n(Z)-coinvariants of H_2(IA_n), and the vanishing of the second rational homology group of the level l congruence subgroup of Aut(F_n). Our generating set is derived from a new group presentation for IA_n which is infinite but which has a simple recursive form.
A collection C of subgroups of a finite group G can give rise to three different standard formulas for the cohomology of G in terms of either: the subgroups in C; or their centralizers; or their normalizers. We give a short but systematic study of the relationship among such formulas for nine standard collections C of p-subgroups, obtaining some new formulas in the process. To do this, we exhibit some sufficient conditions on the poset C which imply comparison results.
We compute the equivariant $KO$-homology of the classifying space for proper actions of $\textrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\textrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$. We also compute the Bredon homology and equivariant $K$-homology of the classifying spaces for proper actions of $\textrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{p}])$ and $\textrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{p}])$ for each prime $p$. Finally, we prove the Unstable Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg Conjecture for a large class of groups whose maximal finite subgroups are odd order and have periodic cohomology.

We define the notion of a hierarchically cocompact classifying space for a family of subgroups of a group. Our main application is to show that the mapping class group $\mbox{Mod}(S)$ of any connected oriented compact surface $S$, possibly with punctures and boundary components and with negative Euler characteristic has a hierarchically cocompact model for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups of dimension at most $\mbox{vcd} \mbox{Mod}(S)+1$. When the surface is closed, we prove that this bound is optimal. In particular, this answers a question of Lück for mapping class groups of surfaces.
We provide lower bounds on the number of subgroups of a group $G$ as a function of the primes and exponents appearing in the prime factorization of $|G|$. Using these bounds, we classify all abelian groups with 22 or fewer subgroups, and all non-abelian groups with 19 or fewer subgroups. This allows us to extend the integer sequence A274847 \cite{OEIS} introduced by Slattery in \cite{Slattery}.
Quillen's plus construction is a topological construction that kills the maximal perfect subgroup of the fundamental group of a space without changing the integral homology of the space. In this paper we show that there is a topological construction that, while leaving the integral homology of a space unaltered, kills even the intersection of the transfinite lower central series of its fundamental group. Moreover, we show that this is the maximal subgroup that can be factored out of the fundamental group without changing the integral homology of a space.
Let $G$ be a group hyperbolic relative to a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal P$. Let $\mathcal F$ be the family of subgroups consisting of all the conjugates of subgroups in $\mathcal P$, all their subgroups, and all finite subgroups. Then there is a cocompact model for $E_{\mathcal F} G$. This result was known in the torsion-free case. In the presence of torsion, a new approach was necessary. Our method is to exploit the notion of dismantlability. A number of sample applications are discussed.
We recall a group-theoretic description of the first non-vanishing homotopy group of a certain (n+1)-ad of spaces and show how it yields several formulae for homotopy and homology groups of specific spaces. In particular we obtain an alternative proof of J. Wu's group-theoretic description of the homotopy groups of a 2-sphere.
A p-local finite group consists of a finite p-group S, together with a pair of categories which encode ``conjugacy'' relations among subgroups of S, and which are modelled on the fusion in a Sylow p-subgroup of a finite group. It contains enough information to define a classifying space which has many of the same properties as p-completed classifying spaces of finite groups. In this paper, we examine which subgroups control this structure. More precisely, we prove that the question of whether an abstract fusion system F over a finite p-group S is saturated can be determined by just looking at …
Let G be a word-hyperbolic group, obtained as a graph of free groups amalgamated along cyclic subgroups. If H_2(G;Q) is nonzero, then G contains a closed hyperbolic surface subgroup. Moreover, the unit ball of the Gromov-Thurston norm on H_2(G;R) is a finite-sided rational polyhedron.
This is a revised version of the author's PhD thesis, including the corrections by the examiners. It also includes a few additional small corrections. In this thesis the objects of study are classifying spaces of groups with stabilisers in a given family of subgroups. Given a group G and a family of subgroups we study the minimal dimension a classifying space can have. We focus on classifying spaces with virtually cyclic stabilisers.
This paper is about application of various homological methods to classical problems in the theory of group rings. It is shown that the third homology of groups plays a key role in Narain Gupta's three normal subgroup problem. For a free group $F$ and its normal subgroups $R,\,S,\,T,$ and the corresponding ideals in the integral group ring $\mathbb Z[F]$, ${\bf r}=(R-1)\mathbb Z[F],\ {\bf s}=(S-1)\mathbb Z[F],\ {\bf t}=(T-1)\mathbb Z[F],$ a complete description of the normal subgroup $F\cap (1+{\bf rst})$ is given, provided $R\subseteq T$ and the third and the fourth homology groups of $R/R\ca…
We show that a finite group which admits a faithful, smooth, orientation-preserving action on a homology 4-sphere, and in particular on the 4-sphere, is isomorphic to a subgroup of the orthogonal group SO(5), by explicitly determining the various groups which can occur (up to an indetermination of index two in the case of solvable groups). As a consequence we obtain also a characterization of the finite groups which are isomorphic to subgroups of the orthogonal groups SO(5) and O(5).
We prove that if F is a finitely generated free group and f:F -> F is an automorphism with polynomial growth of degree d, then there exists a characteristic subgroup S < F of finite index such that the induced automorphism of the abelianisation of S also grows polynomially of degree d. The proof is geometric in nature and makes use of improved relative train track representatives.
For Artin groups of dihedral type, we compute the Bredon homology groups of the classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups with coefficients in the K-theory of a group ring.
By studying commensurators of virtually cyclic groups, we prove that every elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length h and cardinality aleph-n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers of dimension n+h+2. We also provide a criterion for groups that fit into an extension with torsion-free quotient to admit a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. Finally, we exhibit examples of integral linear groups of type F whose geometric dimension for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is finite but arbitrarily larger than…
For a group $G$, let $\mathcal{F}_{n}$ be the family of all the subgroups of $G$ containing a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^{r}$ for some $r=0,1,2,\dots ,n$ of finite index. Joecken, Lafont and Sánchez Saldaña computed the $\mathcal{F}_1$-dimension of 3-manifold groups. The goal of this article is to compute the $\mathcal{F}_n$-geometric dimension of 3-manifold groups for all $n\geq 2$.
The homology groups of many natural sequences of groups $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ (e.g. general linear groups, mapping class groups, etc.) stabilize as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Indeed, there is a well-known machine for proving such results that goes back to early work of Quillen. Church and Farb discovered that many sequences of groups whose homology groups do not stabilize in the classical sense actually stabilize in some sense as representations. They called this phenomena representation stability. We prove that the homology groups of congruence subgroups of $GL_n(R)$ (for almost any reasonabl…
In this paper we complete the description of the $B\mathbb{Z} /p$-cellularization of the classifying spaces of all finite groups, for all primes $p$. The techniques are based in a careful analysis of the $p$-fusion structure of the groups involved -with special attention to their strongly closed subgroups- and Chachólski's description of the $A$-cellular approximation.
The classifying space BG of a topological group $G$ can be filtered by a sequence of subspaces $B(q,G)$, using the descending central series of free groups. If $G$ is finite, describing them as homotopy colimits is convenient when applying homotopy theoretic methods. In this paper we introduce natural subspaces $B(q,G)_p$ of $B(q,G)$ defined for a fixed prime $p$. We show that $B(q,G)$ is stably homotopy equivalent to a wedge of $B(q,G)_p$ as $p$ runs over the primes dividing the order of $G$. Colimits of abelian groups play an important role in understanding the homotopy type of these spaces.…
We construct a map from the classifying space of a discrete Kac-Moody group over the algebraic closure of the field with p elements to the classifying space of a complex topological Kac-Moody group and prove that it is a homology equivalence at primes q different from p. This generalises a classical result of Quillen-Friedlander-Mislin for Lie groups. As an application, we construct unstable Adams operations for general Kac-Moody groups compatible with the Frobenius homomorphism. In contrast to the Lie case, the homotopy fixed points of these unstable Adams operations cannot be realized at q a…
We investigate the homology of finite index subgroups G_i of a given finitely presented group G. Specifically, we examine d_p(G_i), which is the dimension of the first homology of G_i, with mod p coefficients. We say that a collection of finite index subgroups {G_i} has linear growth of mod p homology if the infimum of d_p(G_i)/[G:G_i] is positive. We show that if this holds and each G_i is normal in its predecessor and has index a power of p, then one of the following possibilities must be true: G is large (that is, some finite index subgroup admits a surjective homomorphism onto a non-abelia…
In this paper, we study and classify extensions of p-local finite groups, and also compute the fundamental group of the classifying space of a p-local finite group.
We investigate two open questions in a cohomology theory relative to the family of finite subgroups. The problem of whether the F-cohomological dimension is subadditive is reduced to extensions by groups of prime order. We show that every finitely generated regular branch group has infinite rational cohomological dimension. Moreover, we prove that the first Grigorchuk group G is not contained in Kropholler's class HF .
We establish new strong lower bounds on the (subnormal) subgroup growth of a large class of groups. This includes the fundamental groups of all finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds and all (free non-abelian)-by-cyclic groups. The lower bound is nearly exponential, which should be compared with the fastest possible subgroup growth of any finitely generated group. This is achieved by free non-abelian groups and is slightly faster than exponential. As a consequence, we obtain good estimates on the number of covering spaces of a hyperbolic 3-manifold with given covering degree. We also obtain slig…
A finite group $G$ is called *uniformly generated*, if whenever there is a (strictly ascending) chain of subgroups $1<\langle x_1\rangle<\langle x_1,x_2\rangle <\cdots<\langle x_1,x_2,\dots,x_d\rangle=G$, then $d$ is the minimal number of generators of $G$. Our main result classifies the uniformly generated groups without using the simple group classification. These groups are related to finite projective geometries by a result of Iwasawa on subgroup lattices.
Let $G$ be a group and $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of subgroups closed under conjugation and subgroups. A model for the classifying space $E_{\mathcal{F}} G$ is a $G$-CW-complex $X$ such that every isotropy group belongs to $\mathcal{F}$, and for all $H\in \mathcal{F}$ the fixed point subspace $X^H$ is contractible. The group $G$ is of type $\mathcal{F}\text{-}\mathrm{F}_{n}$ if it admits a model for $E_\mathcal{F} G$ with $n$-skeleton with compact orbit space. The main result of the article provides is a characterization of $\mathcal{F}\text{-}\mathrm{F}_{n}$ analogue to Brown's criterion for $…
We show that every discrete subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. Applying our methods to $\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{Z})$, we obtain a four dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers and a decomposition of the algebraic $K$-theory of its group ring.
Let $p$ be a prime and let $\mathbb{C}$ be the complex field. We explicitly classify the finite solvable irreducible monomial subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(p,\mathbb{C})$ up to conjugacy. That is, we give a complete and irredundant list of $\mathrm{GL}(p,\mathbb{C})$-conjugacy class representatives as generating sets of monomial matrices. Copious structural information about non-solvable finite irreducible monomial subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(p,\mathbb{C})$ is also proved, enabling a classification of all such groups bar one family. We explain the obstacles in that exceptional case. For $p\leq 3$, w…
In this paper we discuss the isomorphism types of parabolic subgroups in Kac-Moody groups. The results have applications in the study of topology of Kac-Moody groups and their classifying spaces.
Let $G$ be an infinite discrete group and let $\underline{E}G$ be a classifying space for proper actions of $G$. Every $G$-equivariant vector bundle over $\underline{E}G$ gives rise to a compatible collection of representations of the finite subgroups of $G$. We give the first examples of groups $G$ with a cocompact classifying space for proper actions $\underline{E}G$ admitting a compatible collection of representations of the finite subgroups of $G$ that does not come from a $G$-equivariant (virtual) vector bundle over $\underline{E}G$. This implies that the Atiyah-Hirzeburch spectral sequen…
For any discrete, torsion-free subgroup $Γ$ of $\mathrm{Sp}(n,1)$ (resp.\ $\mathrm{F}_4^{-20}$) with no parabolic elements, we prove that $H_{4n-1}(Γ;V)=0$ (resp.\ $H_i(Γ;V)=0$ for $i=13,14,15$) for any $Γ$--module $V$. The main technical advance is a new bound on the $p$--Jacobian of the barycenter map of Besson--Courtois--Gallot. We also apply this estimate to obtain an inequality between the critical exponent and homological dimension of $Γ$, improving on work of M.~Kapovich.
We study the growth of torsion in the abelianizations of finite index subgroups in finitely generated metabelian groups. This complements earlier work of Kar, Kropholler and the author which covered the finitely presented amenable groups.
We develop a theory of equivariant group presentations and relate them to the second homology group of a group. Our main application says that the second homology group of the Torelli subgroup of the mapping class group is finitely generated as an $Sp(2g,\mathbb{Z})$-module.
Given a finitely-generated group G, and a finite group Γ, Philip Hall defined δ_Γto be the number of factor groups of G that are isomorphic to Γ. We show how to compute the Hall invariants by cohomological and combinatorial methods, when G is finitely-presented, and Γbelongs to a certain class of metabelian groups. Key to this approach is the stratification of the character variety by the jumping loci of the cohomology of G, with coefficients in rank 1 local systems over a suitably chosen field \K. Counting relevant torsion points on these "characteristic" subvarieties gives δ_Γ(G). In the pro…
