Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) represent a novel class of fascinating anisotropic plasmonic materials, supporting highly confined propagating plasmon polaritons in addition to surface plasmon polaritons. However, it is very challenging to tailor and excite these modes at optical frequencies by prism coupling because of the intrinsic difficulties in engineering non-traditional optical properties with artificial nanostructures and the unavailability of high refractive index prisms for matching the momentum between the incident light and the guided modes. Here, we report the mechanism of excitation of high-k Bloch-like Plasmon Polariton (BPPs) modes with ultrasmall modal volume using a meta-grating, which is a combined structure of a metallic diffraction grating and a type II HMM. We show how a 1D plasmonic grating without any mode in the infrared spectral range, if coupled to a HMM supporting high-k modes, can efficiently enable the excitation of these modes via coupling to far-field radiation. Our theoretical predictions are confirmed by reflection measurements as a function of angle of incidence and excitation wavelength. We introduce design principles to achieve a full control of high-k modes in meta-gratings, thus enabling a better understanding of light-matter interaction in this type of hybrid meta-structures. The proposed spectral response engineering is expected to find potential applications in bio-chemical sensors, integrated optics and optical sub-wavelength imaging.
Polaritons can provide strong optical field enhancement allowing to boost light-matter interaction. Here, we experimentally observe enhancement of mid-infrared second-harmonic generation (SHG) using grating-coupled surface phonon polaritons of the 6H-SiC surface. In our experiment, we measure the SHG along the polariton dispersion by changing the incidence angle of the excitation beam. We observe hybridization between the propagating surface phonon polaritons and localized plasmon resonances in the gold grating, evidenced by the modification of the polariton dispersion as we change the area ra…
In the present work, we theoretically demonstrate, for the first time, that near field radiative transport between 1D periodic grating microstructures separated by subwavelength vacuum gaps can be significantly enhanced by exciting magnetic resonance or polariton. Fluctuational electrodynamics that incorporates scattering matrix theory with rigorous coupled wave analysis is employed to exactly calculate the near field radiative heat flux between two SiC gratings. Besides the well known coupled surface phonon polaritons (SPhP), an additional spectral radiative heat flux peak, which is due to ma…
Resonance diffraction of THz HCN laser radiation on a semiconductor (InSb) grating is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The specular reflectivity suppression due to the resonance excitation of the THz surface plasmon-polariton is observed on a pure semiconductor grating and on semiconductor gratings covered with a thin striped layer of the residual photoresist. Presence of a thin dielectric layer on the grating surface leads to the shift and widening of the plasmon-polariton resonance. A simple analytical theory of the resonance diffraction on a shallow grating covered with a diel…
In this paper, we design and simulate a terahertz (THz) controllable active plasmonic waveguide structure based on a single graphene layer that is placed on a random silicon grating substrate. Optical gain in the proposed THz active plasmonic waveguide structure is provided by the stimulated emission process in the photoexcited graphene monolayer that leads to the amplification of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves. We use a random grating substrate to introduce Anderson localization of the SPP waves propagating through the graphene monolayer to enhance their optical amplification at resona…
In the present work, we theoretically demonstrate that near field radiative transport between one dimensional periodic grating microstructures separated by nanometer vacuum gaps can be spectrally enhanced by exciting magnetic polariton. Fluctuational electrodynamics that incorporates scattering matrix theory with rigorous coupled wave analysis is employed to exactly calculate the near field radiative flux between two gold gratings. Besides the well known coupled surface plasmon polaritons, the radiative flux can be also spectrally enhanced due to magnetic polariton, which is excited in the gap…
Exciton-polaritons have become an emerging platform for implementing non-Hermitian physics. The implementation commonly requires control of both the real and imaginary parts of the eigenmodes of the system. We present an experimental method to achieve this purpose using microcavities with sub-wavelength gratings as reflectors. The reflectivity and reflection phase of the grating can be changed by its geometric parameters and they determine the energy and linewidth of the polariton modes. We demonstrate that this method allows a wide range of possible polariton energy and linewidth, suitable fo…
The excitation of multiple surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves of different linear polarization states and phase speeds by a surface-relief grating formed by a metal and a rugate filter, both of finite thickness, was studied theoretically, using rigorous coupled-wave-analysis. The incident plane wave can be either p or s polarized. The excitation of SPP waves is indicated by the presence of those peaks in the plots of absorbance vs. the incidence angle that are independent of the thickness of the rugate filter. The absorbance peaks representing the excitation of s-polarized SPP waves are nar…
We experimentally demonstrate graphene-plasmon polariton excitation in a continuous graphene monolayer resting on a two-dimensional subwavelength silicon grating. The subwavelength silicon grating is fabricated by a nanosphere lithography technique with a self-assembled nanosphere array as a template. Measured transmission spectra illustrate the excitation of graphene-plasmon polaritons, which is further supported by numerical simulations and theoretical prediction of plasmonband diagrams. Our grating-assisted coupling to graphene-plasmon polaritons forms an important platform for graphene-bas…
We report the design, fabrication and characterization of a periodic grating of shallow rectangular grooves in a metallic film with the goal of maximizing the coupling efficiency of an extended plane wave (PW) of visible or near-infrared light into a single surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode on a flat metal surface. A PW-to-SPP power conversion factor > 45 % is demonstrated at a wavelength of 780 nm, which exceeds by an order of magnitude the experimental performance of SPP grating couplers reported to date at any wavelength. Conversion efficiency is maximized by matching the dissipative SPP…
Hyperbolic polaritons in van der Waals materials and metamaterial heterostructures provide unprecedented control over light-matter interaction at the extreme nanoscale. Here, we propose a concept of type-I hyperbolic metasurface supporting highly-squeezed magnetic designer polaritons, which act as magnetic analogues to hyperbolic polaritons in the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) in the first Reststrahlen band. Comparing with the natural h-BN, the size and spacing of the metasurface unit cell can be readily scaled up (or down), allowing for manipulating designer polaritons in frequency and in sp…
The in-plane negative refraction of high-momentum (i.e., high-k) photonic modes could enable many applications such as imaging and hyperlensing in a planar platform at deep-subwavelength scales. However, its practical implementation in experiments remains elusive so far. Here we propose a class of hyperbolic metasurfaces, which is characterized by an anisotropic magnetic sheet conductivity and can support the in-plane ultrahigh-k magnetic designer polaritons. Based on such metasurfaces, we report the first experimental observation of the all-angle negative refraction of designer polaritons at …
The excitation of multiple SPP waves as Floquet harmonics was demonstrated in structures fabricated as one-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) on top of two-dimensional gold gratings. Each period of the PC comprised nine layers of silicon oxynitrides of different compositions, and each PC had either two or three periods. Absorptances for obliquely incident $p$- and $s$-polarized light were measured in the 500--1000-nm wavelength regime and the sharp bands in the absorptance spectra were compared with the solutions of the underlying canonical boundary-value problem. The excitation of multiple s…
We describe a surface structure consisting of a metal-air interface where the metallic part consists of two metallic segments with a periodic modulation of the interface between them. Such a structure possesses a different transmissivity for a surface plasmon polariton incident on it from one side of it than it has for a surface plasmon polariton incident on it from the opposite side. This asymmetric transmission of a surface plasmon polariton is based on the suppression of the zero-order Bragg beam which, for a certain value of the modulation depth, is not transmitted through the structure, w…
We experimentally measure and analytically describe the fluorescence enhancement obtained by depositing CdSe/CdS nanocrystals onto a gold plasmonic crystal, a two-dimensional grating of macroscopic size obtained by gold deposition on a self-assembled opal. We show evidences of nanocrystals near-field coupling to the gold Surface Plasmons Polaritons (SPP) followed by grating-induced SPP re-emission to far-field. We develop a theoretical framework and an original method in order to evaluate, from photoluminescence experiments, the SPP extraction efficiency of a grating.
Van der Waals materials and heterostructures manifesting strongly bound room temperature exciton states exhibit emergent physical phenomena and are of a great promise for optoelectronic applications. Here, we demonstrate that nanostructured multilayer transition metal dichalcogenides by themselves provide an ideal platform for excitation and control of excitonic modes, paving the way to exciton-photonics. Hence, we show that by patterning the TMDCs into nanoresonators, strong dispersion and avoided crossing of excitons and hybrid polaritons with interaction potentials exceeding 410 meV may be …
Long-range spatial coherence can be induced in thermal emitters by embedding a periodic grating into a material supporting propagating polaritons or dielectric modes. However, the emission angle and frequency cannot be defined simultaneously and uniquely, resulting in emission at unusable angles or frequencies. Here, we explore superstructure gratings (SSGs) to control the spatial and spectral properties of thermal emitters. SSGs have long-range periodicity, but a unit cell that provides tailorable Bragg components to interact with light. These Bragg components allow simultaneous launching of …
We present a theoretical analysis of the effects of short range surface plasmon polariton excitation on sub-wavelength bridges in metal gratings. We show that localized resonances in thin metal bridges placed within the slit of a free-standing silver grating dramatically modify transmission spectra and boost absorption regardless of the periodicity of the grating. Additionally, the interference of multiple localized resonances makes it possible to tailor the absorption properties of ultrathin gratings, regardless of the apertures' geometrical size. This tunable, narrow-band, enhanced-absorptio…
Spoof surface modes on nanostructured metallic surfaces are known to have tailorable dispersion dependent on the geometric characteristics of the periodic pattern. Here we examine the spoof plasmon dispersion on an isolated grating and a grating-planar mirror cavity configuration. The spoof polariton dispersion in the cavity is obtained using the scattering matrix approach, and the related differential modal density of states is introduced to obtain the mode dispersion and classify the cavity polariton modes. The grating-mirror cavity geometry is an example of periodically nanostructured metal…
This work numerically investigates the radiative properties of film-coupled metamaterials made of a two-dimensional metallic concave grating on a continuous metal film separated by an ultrathin dielectric spacer. Spectrally-selective absorption is demonstrated in the visible and near-infrared regime, and underlying mechanisms are elucidated to be either localized magnetic polaritons (MPs) or surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The unique behaviors of MPs and SPPs are explained with the help of electromagnetic field distributions at respective resonance frequencies. An inductor-capacitor model i…
Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPP) are exploited due to their intriguing properties for photonic circuits fabrication and miniaturization, for surface enhanced spectroscopies and imaging beyond the diffraction limit. However, the excitation of these plasmonic modes by direct illumination is forbidden by energy/momentum conservation rules. One strategy to overcome this limitation relies on diffraction gratings to match the wavevector of the incoming photons with that of propagating SPP excitations. The main limit of the approaches so far reported in literature is that they rely on highly ordered …
First, we argue that the smooth metal-air interface should be regarded as a distinct dielectric medium, the skin of the metal. The existence of this metal skin leads to theoretical explanation of experimental data on the excitation of electromagnetic surface shape resonances in lamellar metallic gratings by light in the visible to near-infrared range. Surface polaritons have been observed in reflection modes on metallized gratings where the electric field is highly localized inside the grooves (around 300-1000 times larger than intensity of incoming optical light). Here we present quantized Ma…
The morphology of a columnar thin film (CTF) of silver renders it an effectively biaxially anisotropic continuum. CTFs of silver deposited on one-dimensional gratings of photoresist showed strong blazing action and asymmetrically coupled optical radiation to surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves propagating only along one direction supported by either the CTF/photoresist or the CTF/air interfaces. Homogenization of the CTFs using the Bruggeman formalism revealed them to display hyperbolic dispersion, and the dispersion of SPP waves was adequately described thereby.
One dimensional rectangular metallic gratings enable enhanced transmission of light for specific resonance frequencies. Two kinds of modes participating to enhanced transmission have already been demonstrated : (i) waveguide modes and (ii) surface plasmon polaritons (SPP). Since the original paper of Hessel and Oliner \cite{hessel} pointing out the existence of (i), no progress was made in their understanding. We present here a carefull analysis, and show that the coupling between the light and such resonances can be tremendously improved using an {\it evanescent} wave. This leads to enhanced …
We report a novel design of a compact wavelength add-drop multiplexer utilizing dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs). The DLSPPW-based configuration exploits routing properties of directional couplers and filtering abilities of Bragg gratings. We present practical realization of a 20-$μ$m-long device operating at telecom wavelengths that can reroute optical signals separated by approximately 70 nm in the wavelength band. We characterize the performance of the fabricated structures using scanning near-field optical microscopy as well as leakage-radiation microscopy a…
We reported here the results of the calculations of wavevector dispersion of oscillations frequencies, $ω'(k)$, and damping $ω''(k)$ of the surface plasmon phonon polaritons (\mbox{SPPhP}) for the heavy-doped GaN sample. We showed that $ω'(k)$- dependence consists of the three branches with the specific anticrossing behavior due to the interaction of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) with surface phonon polariton(SPhP). The strong renormalization of the damping $ω''(k)$ in the vicinity of the anticrossing region was found. The obtained dispersions of the $ω'(k)$ and $ω''(k)$ were applied for the…
Angle-resolved reflection and emission spectra of metal gratings consisting of sub-wavelength grooves and immersed into rhodamine B and rhodamine 19 solutions are presented. The measured reflection and emission dispersion diagrams reveal the surface plasmon polaritons positions and strong plasmon mediated emission enhancement, respectively. The same grating could be easily re-used for the characterization of different dye-molecules.
Plasmonic biosensing chips were prepared by fabricating wavelength-scaled dielectric-metal interfacial gratings on polymer film covered bimetal layers. Lysozyme biomolecules (LYZ) and gold nanoparticle bioconjugates (AuNP-LYZ) with 1:5 mass ratio were seeded onto the biochip surfaces. Comparison of the reflectance curves measured in a modified Kretschmann arrangement and computed numerically proved that monitoring the narrower secondary peaks under optimal rotated-grating coupling condition makes it possible to achieve enhanced sensitivity in biodetection. The enlarged resonance peak shift is …
We theoretically investigate the second harmonic generation and photon drag effect induced by an incident plane wave to a doped graphene placed on a two-dimensional diffraction grating. The relevant nonlinear conductivity of the graphene is obtained by a semi-classical treatment with a phenomenological relaxation. The grating acts not only as a plasmon coupler but also as a dispersion modulator of the graphene plasmon. As a result, the second harmonic generation is strongly enhanced by exciting the graphene plasmon polariton of the first- and/or second-harmonic frequencies. The photon drag eff…
A concept for the efficient generation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with a duration of very few cycles is presented. The scheme is based on grating coupling and laser pulses with wavefront rotation (WFR), so that the resonance condition for SPP excitation is satisfied only for a time window shorter than the driving pulse. The feasibility and robustness of the technique is investigated by means of simulations with realistic parameters. In optimal conditions, we find that a $29.5$~fs pulse with $800$~nm wavelength can excite a $3.8$~fs SPP ($\sim 1.4$ laser cycles) with a peak field ampl…
Microcavity polaritons are bosonic light-matter particles that can emit coherent radiation without electronic population inversion via bosonic scattering. This phenomenon, known as polariton lasing, strongly depends on the polaritons' confinement. Shrinking the polaritons' mode volume increases the interactions mediated by their excitonic part, and thereby the density-dependent blueshift of the polariton to a higher energy is enhanced. Previously, polariton lasing has been demonstrated in micropillars with diameters larger than three microns, in grating based cavities, fiber cavities and photo…
We propose a graphene-on-grating nanostructure to enable second-order spatial differentiation computation in terahertz (THz) region. The differentiation operation is based on the interference between the direct reflected field and the leakage of two excited surface plasmon polaritons counter-propagating along the graphene sheet. With the spatial coupled-mode theory, we derive out that the requirement for the second-order spatial differentiation is the critical coupling condition. We numerically demonstrate such an analog computation with Gaussian beams. It shows that the spatial bandwidth of t…
Surface plasmon polaritons in graphene couple strongly to surface phonons in polar substrates leading to hybridized surface plasmon-phonon polaritons (SPPPs). We demonstrate that a surface acoustic wave (SAW) can be used to launch propagating SPPPs in graphene/h-BN heterostructures on a piezoelectric substrate like AlN, where the SAW-induced surface modulation acts as a dynamic diffraction grating. The efficiency of the light coupling is greatly enhanced by the introduction of the h-BN film as compared to the bare graphene/AlN system. The h-BN interlayer not only significantly changes the disp…
The tailoring of plasmonic near-fields is central to the field of nanophotonics. The detailed knowledge of the field distribution is crucial for a design and fabrication of plasmonic sensors, detectors, photovoltaics, plasmon-based cicuits, nanomanipulators, electrooptic plasmonic modulators and atomic devices. We report on a fully quantitative comparison between near field observation and numerical calculations, considering the intensity distribution for TM and TE polarisations, necessary for the construction of devices in all these areas. We present the near field scanning microscopy (NSOM) …
The thermal emission of refractory plasmonic metamaterial - a titanium nitride 1D grating - is studied at high operating temperature (540 °C). By choosing a refractory material, we fabricate thermal gratings with high brightness that are emitting mid-infrared radiation centered around 3 $μ$m. We demonstrate experimentally that the thermal excitation of plasmon-polariton on the surface of the grating produces a well-collimated beam with a spatial coherence length of 32λ (angular divergence of 1.8°) which is quasi-monochromatic with a full width at half maximum of 70 nm. These experimental resul…
Excitation of coherent optical phonons in solids provides a pathway for ultrafast modulation of light on a sub-ps timescale. Here, we report on efficient 3.6 THz modulation of light reflected from hybrid metal/semiconductor plasmonic crystals caused by lattice vibrations in a few nm thick layer of elemental tellurium. We observe that surface plasmon polaritons contribute significantly to photoinduced formation of this thin layer at the interface between a telluride-based II-VI semiconductor, such as (Cd,Mg)Te or (Cd,Mn)Te, and a one-dimensional gold grating. The change in interface composition…
Vector vortex beams are a class of optical beams with singularities in their space-variant polarization. Vector vortex beam lasers have applications in many areas including imaging and communication, where vertical-cavity lasers emitting Gaussian beams have been most widely used so far. Generation of vector vortex beams from vertical-cavity lasers has required external control or modulation. Here, by utilizing a polarization-selective subwavelength grating as one of the reflectors in a vertical semiconductor microcavity, we design the spin textures of the polariton mode and demonstrate polarit…
A novel photonic thermal diode concept operating in the near field and capitalizing on the temperature-dependence of coupled surface polariton modes in nanostructures is proposed. The diode concept utilizes terminals made of the same material supporting surface polariton modes in the infrared, but with dissimilar structures. The specific diode design analyzed in this Letter involves a thin film and a bulk, both made of 3C silicon carbide, separated by a subwavelength vacuum gap. High rectification efficiency is obtained by tuning the antisymmetric resonant modes of the thin film, resulting fro…
We report the results of theoretical and experimental studies of photoluminescence of silicon nanocrystals in the proximity of plasmonic modes of different types. In our samples, the type of plasmonic mode is determined by the filling ratio of a one-dimensional gold grating which covers the thin film with silicon nanocrystals on a quartz substrate. We analyze the extinction and photoluminesce spectra of silicon nanocrystals and show that the emitted light is coupled to the corresponding plasmonic mode. We also demonstrate the modification of the extinction and photoluminesce spectra under the …
Twisted two-dimensional bilayer materials exhibit many exotic physical phenomena. Manipulating the twist angle between the two layers enables fine control of the physical structure, resulting in development of many novel physics, such as the magic-angle flat-band superconductivity, the formation of moire exciton and interlayer magnetism. Here, combined with analogous principles, we study theoretically the near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two twisted hyperbolic systems. This two twisted hyperbolic systems are mirror images of each other. Each twisted hyperbolic system is compo…
Polaritons, coupled excitations of photons and dipolar matter excitations, can propagate along anisotropic metasurfaces with either hyperbolic or elliptical dispersion. At the transition from hyperbolic to elliptical dispersion (corresponding to a topological transition), various intriguing phenomena are found, such as an enhancement of the photonic density of states, polariton canalization and hyperlensing. Here we investigate theoretically and experimentally the topological transition and the polaritonic coupling of deeply subwavelength elements in a uniaxial infrared-phononic metasurface, a…
Tailoring the emission of plasmonic nanowire-based lasers represents one of the major challenges in the field of nanoplasmonics, given the envisaged integration of such devices into on-chip all-optical circuits. In this study, we proposed a mode selection scheme based on distributed feedback, achieved via the external coupling of single zinc oxide nanowires to an aluminum grating, which enabled a quasi-single mode lasing action. The nano-manipulation of a single nanowire allowed for a reliable comparison of the lasing emission characteristics in both planar (i.e. nanowire on the metallic subst…
We delineate the four principal surface plasmon polariton coupling and interaction mechanisms in subwavelength gratings, and demonstrate their significant roles in shaping the optical response of plasmonic gratings. Within the framework of width-graded metal-insulator-metal nano-gratings, mode confinement and wave guiding result in multiwavelength light localization provided conditions of adiabatic mode transformation are satisfied. The field is enhanced further through fine tuning of the groove-width (w), groove-depth (L) and groove-to-groove-separation (d). By juxtaposing the resonance modes…
We demonstrate enhanced light extraction for monochrome top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The enhancement by a factor of 1.2 compared to a reference sample is caused by the use of a hole transport layer (HTL) material possessing a low refractive index (1.52). The low refractive index reduces the in-plane wave vector of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excited at the interface between the bottom opaque metallic electrode (anode) and the HTL. The shift of the SPP dispersion relation decreases the power dissipated into lost evanescent excitations and thus increases the outcou…
Plasma frequency is the spectral boundary for low-loss propagation and evanescent decay of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves, which corresponds to a high cut-off phenomenon and is typically utilized for identifying SPPs. At terahertz (THz) frequencies, a metal line with periodic metallic grooves can mimic the conventional optical SPPs, which is referred to as designer SPPs. Theoretically, the plasma frequency of THz SPPs decreases as the groove depth increases. Here, by replacing the metallic grooves with graphene sheets, dynamically sweeping SPP plasma frequency is demonstrated for the fi…
This paper presents an analytical study of TM-polarized surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in nonlinear multi-layer structures containing graphene sheets. In the general structure, each graphene sheet has been sandwiched between two different nonlinear magnetic materials. To show the richness of the proposed general waveguide, two novel nonlinear structures have been introduced and investigated as special cases of the general structure. It will be shown that the propagation features of these structures can be tuned by changing the chemical potential of the graphene and the incident mode power. …

Apart from fundamental scientific exploration, this material system has attracted active research interest in the nanophotonic devices community for its unique optoelectronic properties. The inherently strong excitonic response in monolayer TMDs can be further enhanced by exploiting the temporal confinement of light in nanophotonic structures. Dielectric metasurfaces are one such two-dimensional nanoph…
We present a concept for an ultra-thin solar fuel device with a nanostructured back contact. Using rigorous simulations we show that the nanostructuring significantly increases the absorption in the semiconductor, CuBi$_2$O$_4$ in this case, by 47\% (5.2~mAcm$^{-2}$) through the excitation of plasmonic modes. We are able to attribute the resonances in the device to metal-insulator-metal plasmons coupled to either localised surface plasmon resonances or surface plasmon polaritons. Rounding applied to the metallic corners leads to a blueshift in the resonance wavelength while maintaining absorpt…
