Twisted two-dimensional bilayer materials exhibit many exotic physical phenomena. Manipulating the twist angle between the two layers enables fine control of the physical structure, resulting in development of many novel physics, such as the magic-angle flat-band superconductivity, the formation of moire exciton and interlayer magnetism. Here, combined with analogous principles, we study theoretically the near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two twisted hyperbolic systems. This two twisted hyperbolic systems are mirror images of each other. Each twisted hyperbolic system is composed of two graphene gratings, where there is an angle ϕ between this two graphene gratings. By analyzing the photonic transmission coefficient as well as the plasmon dispersion relation of twisted hyperbolic system, we prove that the topological transitions of the surface state at a special angle (from open (hyperbolic) to closed (elliptical) contours) can modulate efficiently the radiative heat transfer. Meanwhile the role of the thickness of dielectric spacer and vacuum gap on the manipulating the topological transitions of the surface state and the NFRHT are also discussed. We predict the hysteresis effect of topological transitions at a larger vacuum gap, and demonstrate that as thickness of dielectric spacer increase, the transition from the enhancement effect of heat transfer caused by the twisted hyperbolic system to a suppression. This technology could novel mechanism and control method for NFRHT, and may open a promising pathway for highly efficient thermal management, energy harvesting, and subwavelength thermal imaging.
Near-field radiative heat transfer between close objects may exceed the far-field blackbody radiation in orders of magnitude when exploiting polaritonic materials. Great efforts have been made to experimentally measure this fundamental stochastic effect but mostly based on simple materials. In this work, we foster an all-optical method to characterize the heat transfer between less explored plasmon-phonon hybrid polaritonic systems made of graphene-SiC heterostructures. A large heat flux about 26 times of the blackbody radiation limit is obtained over a 150-nm vacuum gap, attributed to the cou…
Near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between dissimilar materials supporting surface polaritons in the infrared is of critical importance for applications such as photonic thermal rectification and near-field thermophotovoltaics. Here, we measure NFRHT between millimetersize surfaces made of 6H-SiC and doped Si, respectively supporting surface phonon-polaritons (SPhPs) and surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in the infrared, separated by a 150-nm-thick vacuum gap spacing maintained via SiO2 nanopillars. For purpose of comparison, measurements are also performed between two doped Si surface…
Polaritons - hybrid light-matter states formed in cavity - strongly change the properties of the underlying matter. In optical or plasmonic nanocavities, polaritons decay by radiative emission of the cavity, which is accessible experimentally. Due to the interaction of a molecule with the quantized radiation field, polaritons exhibit light-induced conical intersections (LICIs) which dramatically influence the nuclear dynamics of molecular polaritons. We show that ultrafast radiative emission from the lower polariton is controlled by the geometric phase imposed by the LICI. This finding provide…
In the present work, we theoretically demonstrate that near field radiative transport between one dimensional periodic grating microstructures separated by nanometer vacuum gaps can be spectrally enhanced by exciting magnetic polariton. Fluctuational electrodynamics that incorporates scattering matrix theory with rigorous coupled wave analysis is employed to exactly calculate the near field radiative flux between two gold gratings. Besides the well known coupled surface plasmon polaritons, the radiative flux can be also spectrally enhanced due to magnetic polariton, which is excited in the gap…
In the present work, we theoretically demonstrate, for the first time, that near field radiative transport between 1D periodic grating microstructures separated by subwavelength vacuum gaps can be significantly enhanced by exciting magnetic resonance or polariton. Fluctuational electrodynamics that incorporates scattering matrix theory with rigorous coupled wave analysis is employed to exactly calculate the near field radiative heat flux between two SiC gratings. Besides the well known coupled surface phonon polaritons (SPhP), an additional spectral radiative heat flux peak, which is due to ma…
Planar microcavities filled with active materials containing excitonic resonances host radiative exciton-polariton (polariton) modes with in-plane wave vectors within the light cone. They also host at least one mode guided in the cavity plane by total internal reflection and which is not radiatively coupled to the vacuum modes except through defects or sample edges. We show that polariton lasing mediated by polariton stimulated scattering can occur concomitantly in both types of modes in a microcavity. By adjusting the detuning between the exciton and the radiative photon mode one can favor po…

We have considered a system of equidistant polaritonic states, interacting with an electromagnetic field of a localized THz cavity mode. An accumulation of photons in a THz cavity mode together with bosonic stimulation of the transition between polariton levels induces intensive radiative scattering of polaritons. The concept of double bosonic stimulation of a radiative transition in a bosonic cascade laser (BCL) is formulated, and the possibility of the use of a BCL for the emission of THz radiation is investigated. The system demonstrates threshold-like behaviour and, above threshold, cascad…
The properties of thermal radiation exchange between hot and cold objects can be strongly modified if they interact in the near field where electromagnetic coupling occurs across gaps narrower than the dominant wavelength of thermal radiation. Using a rigorous fluctuational electrodynamics approach, we predict that ultra-thin films of plasmonic materials can be used to dramatically enhance near-field heat transfer. The total spectrally integrated film-to-film heat transfer is over an order of magnitude larger than between the same materials in bulk form and also exceeds the levels achievable w…
Using a pair of p- and n-type semiconductors separated by a nanoscale vacuum gap, we introduce an optoelectronics element prototype, "photonic p-n junction", as an analogue of the electronic p-n junction, which is demonstrated to serve as an ideal near-field heat flux modulator. The high modulation performance relies on the switch among three fundamental photon-carrier interaction modes (i.e., surface plasmon polaritons, symmetric depleted internal plasmon polaritons and symmetric accumulated surface plasmon polaritons) caused by the changes in hole and electron densities near the surfaces und…
We study the radiative heat transfer between multilayer structures made by a periodic repetition of a graphene sheet and a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) slab. Surface plasmons in a monolayer graphene can couple with a hyperbolic phonon polaritons in a single hBN film to form hybrid polaritons that can assist photon tunneling. For periodic multilayer graphene/hBN structures, the stacked metallic/dielectric array can give rise to a further effective hyperbolic behavior, in addition to the intrinsic natural hyperbolic behavior of hBN. The effective hyperbolicity can enable more hyperbolic polarit…
Dynamic radiative cooling attracts fast-increasing interest due to its adaptability to changing environment and promises for more energy-savings than the static counterpart. Here we demonstrate enhanced infrared emission by thermally switching the excitation of magnetic polariton with microstructured vanadium dioxide (VO2) metasurfaces fabricated via scalable and etch-free processes. Temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopy clearly shows that the spectral emittance of fabricated tunable metasurfaces at wavelengths from 2 to 6 um is significantly enhanced when heated beyond its phase transit…
Simulations of propagation of light beams in specially designed multilayer semiconductor structures (one-dimensional photonic crystals) with embedded quantum wells reveal characteristic optical properties of resonant hyperbolic metamaterials. A strong dependence of the refraction angle and the optical beam spread on the exciton radiative lifetime is revealed. We demonstrate the strong negative refraction of light and the control of the group velocity of light by an external bias through its effect upon the exciton radiative properties.
Topological phonon polaritons (TPhPs) are promising optical modes relevant in long-range radiative heat transfer, information processing and infrared sensing, whose topological protection is expected to enable their robust existence and transport. In this work we show that TPhPs can be supported in one-dimensional (1D) bichromatic silicon carbide nanoparticle (NP) chains, and demonstrate that they can considerably enhance radiative heat transfer for an array much longer than the wavelength of radiation. By introducing incommensurate or commensurate modulations on the interparticle distances, t…
We propose a concept of surface plasmon-polariton amplification in the structure comprising interface between dielectric, metal and asymmetric quantum well. Due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, mimina of dispersion relation for electrons in conduction band are shifted with respect to the maximum of dispersion dependence for holes in $Γ$-point. When energy and momentum intervals between extrema in dispersion relations of electrons and holes match dispersion relation of plasmons, indirect radiative transition can amplify the plasmons; excitation of leaky modes is forbidden due to the select…
In this letter, we study the near-field radiative heat transfer between two metamaterial substrates coated with silicon carbide (SiC) thin films. It is known that metamaterials can enhance the near-field heat transfer over ordinary materials due to excitation of magnetic plasmons associated with s polarization, while strong surface phonon polariton exists for SiC.By careful tuning of the optical properties of metamaterial it is possible to excite electrical and magnetic resonance for the metamaterial and surface phonon polaritons for SiC at different spectral regions, resulting in the enhanced…
We study super-Planckian near-field heat exchanges for multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials using exact S-matrix calculations. We investigate heat exchanges between two multilayer hyperbolic metamaterial structures. We show that the super- Planckian emission of such metamaterials can either come from the presence of surface phonon-polaritons modes or from a continuum of hyperbolic modes depending on the choice of composite materials as well as the structural configuration.
Classical Planck's theory of thermal radiation predicts an upper limit of the heat transfer between two bodies separated by a distance longer than the dominant radiation wavelength (far-field regime). This limit can be overcome when the dimensions of the absorbent bodies are smaller than the dominant wavelength due to hybrid electromagnetic waves, known as surface phonon-polaritons (SPhPs). Here, we experimentally demonstrate that the far-field radiative heat transfer between two non-absorbent bodies can also overcome Planck's limit, by coating them with an absorbent material to form a polarit…
A theoretical description of radiation-matter coupling for semiconductor-based photonic crystal slabs is presented, in which quantum wells are embedded within the waveguide core layer. A full quantum theory is developed, by quantizing both the electromagnetic field with a spatial modulation of the refractive index and the exciton center of mass field in a periodic piecewise constant potential. The second-quantized hamiltonian of the interacting system is diagonalized with a generalized Hopfield method, thus yielding the complex dispersion of mixed exciton-photon modes including losses. The occ…
This work numerically investigates the radiative properties of film-coupled metamaterials made of a two-dimensional metallic concave grating on a continuous metal film separated by an ultrathin dielectric spacer. Spectrally-selective absorption is demonstrated in the visible and near-infrared regime, and underlying mechanisms are elucidated to be either localized magnetic polaritons (MPs) or surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The unique behaviors of MPs and SPPs are explained with the help of electromagnetic field distributions at respective resonance frequencies. An inductor-capacitor model i…
We reveal and study the topological transition in a metamaterial formed by parallel nanowires of polaritonic material. When the dispersion transits from the elliptic (epsilon-positive) to hyperbolic (epsilon-indefinite) regime, a very specific isofrequency surface arises which implies an extraordinary Purcell factor in spite of noticeable optical losses.
The study of radiative heat transfer in particulate system is usually based on radiative transfer equation (RTE) with effective radiative properties. However, for non-random, densely and regularly packed particulate systems, the applicability of RTE is questionable due to dependent scattering and weak randomness of particle arrangement. In this paper, a new continuum approach that does not explicitly rely on the RTE is proposed for radiative heat transfer in the densely packed particulate system. The new approach is based on the generalization of the concept of radiation distribution factor (R…
We study the effect of particles shape on the radiative heat transfer in a three-body system. It is found that the radiative heat flux between two nanoparticles in a three body system can be tuned by the shape of the third particle. In particular, we show that the heat flux is very sensitive to the particle shapes and slight mismatches of shapes results in either enhanced or suppressed heat flux.
We develop an analytical framework for nonreciprocal radiative heat transfer in two-body planar systems. Based on our formalism, we identify effects that are uniquely nonreciprocal in near-field heat transfer in planar systems. We further introduce a general thermodynamic constraint that is applicable for both reciprocal and nonreciprocal planar systems, in agreement with the second law of thermodynamics. We numerically demonstrate our findings in an example system consisting of magneto-optical materials. Our formalism applies to both near- and far-field regimes, opening opportunities for expl…
Near-field radiative heat transfer allows heat to propagate across a small vacuum gap in quantities that are several orders of magnitude greater then the heat transfer by far-field, blackbody radiation. Although heat transfer via near-field effects has been discussed for many years, experimental verification of this theory has been very limited. We have measured the heat transfer between two macroscopic sapphire plates, finding an increase in agreement with expectations from theory. These experiments, conducted near 300 K, have measured the heat transfer as a function of separation over mm to …
In this work, the hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPPs) in ultrathin hBN sheets are numerically studied. The dispersion relation and distribution of electric field are calculated to confirm the excitation of HPPs. Besides, the coupling effect between HPPs of two ultrathin hBN sheets are investigated. When the distance between two hBN sheets are smaller than the propagation length of the HPPs in the air, the HPPs can be strongly coupled. Therefore, the photon tunneling probability can be greatly enhanced. The split of the HPPs is similar to that of the surface waves, and such phenomenon is well e…
We study the photon thermal Hall effect and the persistent heat current in radiative heat transfer. We show that the photon thermal Hall effect is not a uniquely nonreciprocal effect; it can arise in some reciprocal systems with broken mirror symmetry. This is in contrast with the persistent heat current, which is a uniquely non-reciprocal effect that can not exist in any reciprocal system. Nevertheless, for a specific class of systems with $C_4$ rotational symmetry, we note that the photon thermal Hall effect is uniquely nonreciprocal, and moreover there is a direct connection between the per…
We demonstrate the existence of a shuttling effect for the radiative heat flux exchanged between two bodies separated by a vacuum gap when the chemical potential of photons or the temperature difference is modulated. We show that this modulation typically gives rise to a supplementary flux which superimposes to the flux produced by the mean gradient, enhancing the heat exchange. When the system displays a negative differential thermal resistance, however, the radiative shuttling contributes to insulate the two bodies from each other. These results pave the way for a novel strategy for an activ…
In this work, we study the near-field radiative heat transfer between two suspended sheets of anisotropic 2D materials. It is found that the radiative heat transfer can be enhanced with orders-of-magnitude over the blackbody limit for nanoscale separation. The enhancement is attributed to the excitation of anisotropic and hyperbolic plasmonic modes. Meanwhile, a large thermal modulation effect, depending on the twisted angle of principal axes between the upper and bottom sheets of anisotropic 2D materials, is revealed. The near-field radiative heat transfer for different concentrations of elec…
We demonstrate in this work that the use of metasurfaces provides a viable strategy to largely tune and enhance near-field radiative heat transfer between extended structures. In particular, using a rigorous coupled wave analysis, we predict that Si-based metasurfaces featuring two-dimensional periodic arrays of holes can exhibit a room-temperature near-field radiative heat conductance much larger than any unstructured material to date. We show that this enhancement, which takes place in a broad range of separations, relies on the possibility to largely tune the properties of the surface plasm…
We present a theoretical analysis that demonstrates that the far-field radiative heat transfer between objects with dimensions smaller than the thermal wavelength can overcome the Planckian limit by orders of magnitude. We illustrate this phenomenon with micron-sized structures that can be readily fabricated and tested with existing technology. Our work shows the dramatic failure of the classical theory to predict the far-field radiative heat transfer between micro- and nano-devices.
A parametric study of Drude and Lorentz models performances in maximizing near-field radiative heat transfer between two semi-infinite planes separated by nanometric distances at room temperature is presented in this paper. Optimal parameters of these models that provide optical properties maximizing the radiative heat flux are reported and compared to real materials usually considered in similar studies, silicon carbide and heavily doped silicon in this case. Results are obtained by exact and approximate (in the extreme near-field regime and the electrostatic limit hypothesis) calculations. T…
We compute the radiative heat transfer between nanostructured gold plates in the framework of the scattering theory. We predict an enhancement of the heat transfer as we increase the depth of the corrugations while keeping the distance of closest approach fixed. We interpret this effect in terms of the evolution of plasmonic and guided modes as a function of the grating's geometry.
Through quantum mechanical considerations, we optimize the material response factor $|χ|^2/\text{Im}\left[χ\right]$, which plays a pivotal role in the fundamental limits of near-field radiative heat transfer (RHT). A comparison of the limits obtained to experimental data for select materials shows that current materials fall several orders of magnitude short of the optimized values, suggesting the possibility of significant improvement in the rate of radiative heat transfer between two bodies. This work informs material design efforts that seek to optimize RHT, as well as provides insights int…
We study the constraints on reciprocal and non-reciprocal many-body radiative heat transfer imposed by symmetry and the second law of thermodynamics. We show that the symmetry of such a many-body system in general forms a magnetic group, and the constraints of the magnetic group on the heat transfer can be derived using a generalized reciprocity theorem. We also show that the second law of thermodynamics provides additional constraints in the form of a nodal conservation law of heat flow at equilibrium. As an application, we provide a systematic approach to determine the existence of persisten…
Here, we outline a theory of radiative heat transfer based on an equivalent electrical network representation for the hot material slabs in an arbitrary multilayered environment with arbitrary distribution of temperatures and electromagnetic properties among the layers. Our approach is fully equivalent to the known theories operating with the fluctuating current density, while being significantly simpler in analysis and applications.
