We consider light scattering by an anisotropic defect layer embedded into anisotropic photonic crystal in the spectral vicinity of an optical bound state in the continuum (BIC). Using a resonant state expansion method we derive an analytic solution for reflection and transmission amplitudes. The analytic solution is constructed via a perturbative approach with the BIC as the zeroth order approximation. The solution is found to describe the collapsing Fano feature in the spectral vicinity of the BIC. The findings are confirmed via comparison against direct numerical simulations with the Berreman transfer matrix method.
Fano resonance has raised great attention in nanophotonics attributing to its unique properties. In this work, we study the imaging function of Fano-resonant silicon metasurfece governed by quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs). First, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of nanodisks, a symmetry-protected quasi-BIC is excited with the emergence of a sharp Fano resonance. The near field distributions, multipole contributions and radiation patterns of the metasurface are performed to uncover the mechanism and characteristics of this resonance. In addition, we investigate the imaging function o…
In this article we discuss a model describing key features concerning the lineshapes and the coherent absorption conditions in Fano-resonant dissipative coupled oscillators. The model treats on the same footing the weak and strong coupling regimes, and includes the critical coupling concept, which is of great relevance in numerous applications; in addition, the role of asymmetry is thoroughly analyzed. Due to the wide generality of the model, which can be adapted to various frameworks like nanophotonics, plasmonics, and optomechanics, we envisage that the analytical formulas presented here wil…
Based on the substantial difference in the response time for the resonant and background partitions at stepwise variations of the exiting signal, a simple exactly integrable model describing the dynamic Fano resonance (DFRs) is proposed. The model does not have any fitting parameters, may include any number of resonant partitions and exhibits high accuracy. It is shown that at the point of the destructive interference any sharp variation of the amplitude of the excitation (no matter an increase or a decrease) gives rise to pronounced "flashes" in the intensity of the output signal. In particul…
A perfect metal film with a periodic arrangement of cut-through slits, an anisotropic metallic metamaterial film, mimics a dielectric slab and supports guided electromagnetic waves in the direction perpendicular to the slits. Here, we introduce metallic metasurface superlattices that include multiple slits in a period, and demonstrate that the superlattices support the Fano resonances and bound states in the continuum. The number of Fano resonances and bound states depend on the number of slits in a period of superlattices. The metallic metasurface superlattices provide new mechanisms to manip…
We describe theoretically and observe experimentally the formation of a surface state in a semi-infnite waveguide array with side-coupled waveguide, designed to simultaneously achieve Fano and Fabry-Perot resonances. We demonstrate that the surface mode is compact, with all energy concentrated in few waveguides at the edge and no field penetration beyond the side-coupled waveguide position. Furthermore, we show that by broadening the spectral band in the rest of the waveguide array it is possible to suppress exponentially localized modes, whereas the Fano state having the eigenvalue embedded i…
Fano resonances and bound states in the continuum (BICs) exhibit a rich phenomenology stemming from, respectively, their asymmetric line shapes and infinite quality factors. Here, we show experimentally and theoretically that rod dimer metasurfaces exhibit narrow (high-Q) Fano resonances at THz frequencies. These resonances evolve continuously into a BIC as the rods in each dimer become identical. We demonstrate analytically that this is a universal behavior occurring in arrays of dimers consisting of detuned resonant dipoles. Fano resonances arise as a result of the interference between broad…
We consider light scattering by two dimensional arrays of high-index dielectric spheres arranged into the triangular lattice. It is demonstrated that in the case a triple degeneracy of resonant leaky modes in the Gamma-point the scattering spectra exhibit a complicated picture of Fano resonances with extremely narrow line-width. The Fan features are explained through coupled mode theory for a Dirac cone spectrum as a signature of optical bound states in the continuum (BIC). It is found that the standing wave in-Gamma BIC induces a ring of off-Gamma BICs due to different scaling laws for real a…
We propose a concept of a low-symmetry three-dimensional metamaterial exhibiting a Double- Continuum Fano (DCF) optical resonance. Such metamaterial is described as a birefringent medium supporting a discrete "dark" electromagnetic state weakly coupled to the continua of two nondegen- erate "bright" bands of orthogonal polarizations. It is demonstrated that light propagation through such DCF metamaterial can be slowed down over a broad frequency range when the medium param- eters (e.g. frequency of the "dark" mode) are adiabatically changed along the optical path. Using a specific metamaterial…
We present a unifying point of view which allows to understand spectral features reported in recent experiments with two-dimensional arrays of subwavelength holes in metal films. We develop a Fano analysis of the related scattering problem by distinguishing two interfering contributions to the transmission process, namely a non-resonant contribution (direct scattering) and a resonant contribution (surface plasmon excitation). The introduction of a coupling strength between these two contributions naturally induces resonance shifts and asymmetry of profiles which satisfy simple scaling relation…
Reversible, nonvolatile, and pronounced refractive index modulation is an unprecedented combination of properties enabled by chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs). This combination of properties makes PCMs a fast-growing platform for active, low-energy nanophotonics, including tunability to otherwise passive thin-film optical coatings. Here, we integrate the PCM Sb2Se3 into a novel four-layer thin-film optical coating that exploits photonic Fano resonances to achieve tunable structural colors in both reflection and transmission. We show, contrary to traditional coatings, that Fano-resonan…
Classical emulation of a ubiquitous quantum mechanical phenomenon of double-continuum Fano (DCF) interference using metasurfaces is experimentally realized by engineering the near-field interaction between two bright and one dark plasmonic modes. The competition between the bright modes, with one of them effectively suppressing the Fano interference for the orthogonal light polarization, is discovered and explained by the analytic theory of the plasmonic DCF interference, which is further applied to predicting the circularly dichroic optical field concentration by plasmonic metasurfaces.
Attenuated total reflection (ATR) by surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is a method for evaluating the dispersion relation of SPP from the position of a dip in the reflection spectrum. However, recent studies have shown that the dips are displaced from SPP resonance because they are produced by a type of Fano resonance, i.e., the interference between the resonant reflection process accompanied by resonant excitation of SPP and the direct reflection process without resonant excitation. This result suggests that the system properties difficult to be achieved in the dispersion relation of SPP can be…
Here we propose a route to the high-Q perfect absorption of light by introducing the concept of a Fano anti-laser. Based on the drastic spectral variation of the optical phase in a Fano-resonant system, a spectral singularity for scatter-free perfect absorption can be achieved with an order of magnitude smaller material loss. By applying temporal coupled mode theory to a Fano-resonant waveguide platform, we reveal that the required material loss and following absorption Q-factor are ultimately determined by the degree of Fano spectral asymmetry. The feasibility of the Fano anti-laser is confir…
Fano resonances induced by symmetry protected bound states in the continuum in dielectric metasurfaces: line-shape prediction by machine learning method
In recent years, a range of reconfigurable metamaterials controlled with thermal, electric, magnetic and optical signals have been developed for dynamically manipulating the intensity, phase and wave-front of electromagnetic radiation across the broad electromagnetic spectrum ranging from microwave to optics. Here for the first time, we demonstrate a reconfigurable metasurface performing exclusive OR (XOR) logical operation using two independent control electrical inputs and an optical read-out in the form of far-field Fano intensity states at terahertz wavelengths. At the same time, the near …
A route toward lineshape engineering of Fano resonances in photonic structures is theoretically proposed, which uses dynamic modulation of the refractive index of a microcavity. The method is exemplified by considering coupled-resonator optical waveguide systems. An exact Floquet analysis, based on coupled-mode theory, is presented. Two distinct kinds of resonances can be dynamically created, depending on whether the static structure sustains a localized mode or not. In the former case a single Fano resonance arises, which can be tuned in both frequency and line width by varying the refractive…
When wave scattering systems are subject to certain symmetries, resonant states may decouple from the far-field continuum; they remain localized to the structure and cannot be excited by incident waves from the far field. In this work, we use layer-potential techniques to prove the existence of such states, known as bound states in the continuum, in systems of subwavelength resonators. When the symmetry is slightly broken, this resonant state can be excited from the far field. Remarkably, this may create asymmetric (Fano-type) scattering behaviour where the transmission is fundamentally differ…
Three different periodic optical metasurfaces exhibiting Fano resonances are studied in mid-IR frequency range in the presence of a substrate. We develop a rigorous semi-analytical technique and calculate how the presence of a substrate affects optical properties of these structures. An analytical minimal model based on the truncated exact technique is introduced and is shown to provide a simple description of the observed behavior. We demonstrate that the presence of a substrate substantially alters the collective response of the structures suppressing Wood's anomalies and spatial dispersion …
Metamaterials and meta-surfaces represent a remarkably versatile platform for light manipulation, biological and chemical sensing, nonlinear optics, and even spaser lasing. Many of these applications rely on the resonant nature of metamaterials, which is the basis for extreme spectrally selective concentration of optical energy in the near field. The simplicity of free-space light coupling into sharply-resonant meta-surfaces with high resonance quality factors Q>>1 is a significant practical advantage over the extremely angle-sensitive diffractive structures or inherently inhomogeneous high-Q …
We introduce a theoretical framework based on Fano's theory of discrete-continuum interactions to analyze the quantum dynamics of broadband parametric downconversion (PDC) in the few-pump-photon regime of nonlinear quantum nanophotonics. Applying this unified analytic approach to 1D $χ^{(2)}$-nonlinear waveguides, we find a host of remarkable dynamical features due to the coupling of a discrete pump state to the signal continuum, from unit-efficiency (i.e., complete) downconversion when the coupling is dissipative, to Rabi-like oscillations with sub-exponential decay when it is dispersive. The…
Plasmonic metasurfaces represent a promising platform for enhancing light-matter interaction. Active control of the optical response of metasurfaces is desirable for applications such as beam-steering, modulators and switches, biochemical sensors, and compact optoelectronic devices. Here we use a plasmonic metasurface with two Fano resonances to enhance the interaction of infrared light with electrically controllable single layer graphene. It is experimentally shown that the narrow spectral width of these resonances, combined with strong light/graphene coupling, enables reflectivity modulation…
Quasi-bound states in the continuum (q-BICs) are resonant states of suitably tailored nanostructures with long optical lifetimes controlled by symmetry-breaking perturbations. While in planarized ultrathin devices the resulting Fano resonance is limited to linear polarizations, we show here that chiral perturbations extend q-BIC concepts to arbitrary elliptical polarizations. Using geometric phase engineering, we realize metasurfaces with ultrasharp Fano spectral features that can shape the impinging wavefront with near-unity efficiency, while at the same time precisely filtering their spectra…
The study of resonant dielectric nanostructures with high refractive index is a new research direction in nanoscale optics and metamaterial-inspired nanophotonics. Because of the unique optically-induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances, high-index nanoscale structures are expected to complement or even replace different plasmonic components in a range of potential applications. Here we study strong coupling between modes of a single subwavelength high-index dielectric resonator and analyse the mode transformation and Fano resonances when resonator's aspect ratio varies. We demonstrate tha…
Metasurface analogues of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) have been a major focus of the nanophotonics field over the past several years due their ability to produce high quality factor (Q-factor) resonances for applications such as low-loss slow light devices and highly sensitive optical sensors. However, Ohmic loss limits the achievable Q-factors in conventional plasmonic EIT metasurfaces to values less than 10, significantly hampering device performance. Here, we report experimental demonstration of a classical analogue of EIT using all-dielectric silicon-based metasurfaces. D…
Spectroscopic signatures associated with symmetric Lorentzian and asymmetric Fano line shapes are ubiquitous. Distinct features of Fano resonances in contrast with conventional symmetric resonances have found several applications in photonics such as optical switching, sensing, lasing, and nonlinear and slow-light devices. Therefore, it is important to have control over the generation of these resonances. In this work, we show through ab initio simulations of coupled light-matter systems that Fano interference phenomena can be realized in a multimode photonic environment by strong coupling to …
Tunable narrowband spectral filters with high light throughput and wide dynamic range have remarkable applications such as in optical communications, optical spectroscopy and spectral imaging. However, a cost is usually associated with the filter narrowing either in the dynamic range, in the throughput or the manufacturability. Here we report on a resonating planar multilayered structure that exhibits transparency window in reflection with a controllable full width at half maximum (sub-Angstroms till tens of nm) and tunability over wide spectral range (>500nm in the visible and near infrared).…
In contrast to lossy plasmonic metasurfaces (MSs), wideband dielectric MSs comprising of subwavelength nanostructures supporting Mie resonances are of great interest in the visible wavelength range. Here, for the first time to our knowledge, we experimentally demonstrate a reflective MS consisting of a square-lattice array of Hafnia (HfO$_2$) nanopillars to generate a wide color gamut. To design and optimize these MSs, we use a deep-learning algorithm based on a dimensionality reduction technique. Good agreement is observed between simulation and experimental results in yielding vivid and high…
Coupling between tuneable broadband modes of an array of plasmonic metamolecules and a vibrational mode of carbonyl bond of poly(methyl methacrylate) is shown experimentally to produce a Fano resonance, which can be tuned in situ by varying the polarization of incident light. The interaction between the plasmon modes and the molecular resonance is investigated using both rigorous electromagnetic calculations and a quantum mechanical model describing the quantum interference between a discrete state and two continua. The predictions of the quantum mechanical model are in good agreement with the…
We show an intriguing connection between the coherence of spectral domain interference of two electromagnetic modes in Fano resonance and the resulting degree of polarization of light. A theoretical treatment is developed by combining a general electromagnetic model of partially coherent interference of a spectrally narrow and a broad continuum mode leading to Fano resonance and the cross-spectral density matrix of the interfering polarized fields of light. The model suggests a characteristic variation of the degree of polarization across the region of spectral dip and the peak of Fano resonan…
Hybrid dielectric metasurfaces have emerged as a promising approach to enhancing near field confinement and thus achieving high optical nonlinearity using low loss dielectrics. Additional flexibility in design and fabrication of hybrid metasurfaces allows dynamic control of light, which is value-added for a wider range of applications. Here, we demonstrate a tunable and efficient third harmonic generation (THG) via hybrid metasurfaces with phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) deposited on top of amorphous silicon nanostructutes. Fano resonance is excited to confine the incident light inside t…
Plasmonic nanostructures can overcome Abbe's diffraction limit to generate strong gradient fields, enabling efficient optical trapping of nano-sized particles. However, it remains challenging to achieve stable trapping with low incident laser intensity. Here, we demonstrate a Fano resonance-assisted plasmonic optical tweezers (FAPOT), for single nanoparticle trapping in an array of asymmetrical split nano-apertures, milled on a 50 nm gold thin film. Stable trapping is achieved by tuning the trapping wavelength and varying the incident trapping laser intensity. A very large normalized trap stif…
In this article, we developed a generalized coupled-mode theory for mixing an isolated state with the gapped continuum to unify the engineering mechanism of gap-protected zero modes, Fano resonance and Tamm surface states, even though those phenomena are diverse in numerous branches of physics and optics. By tuning the on-site potential and coupling strength of/with the isolated state, we found the operating characteristics from zero modes, Fano resonance and to Tamm modes, with explicitly demonstrating their localization, transmission spectra and distinct evolution dynamics of the 'bound stat…
Nowadays nanotechnology allows to scale-down various important devices (sensors, chips, fibres, etc), and, thus, opens up new horizon for their applications. Nevertheless, the efficiency most of them is still based on the fundamental physical phenomena, such as resonances. Thus, the understanding of the resonance phenomena will be beneficial. One of the well-known examples is the resonant enhancement of the transmission known as Breit-Wigner resonances, which can be described by a Lorentzian function. But, in many physical systems the scattering of waves involves propagation along different pa…
We introduce two tractable analytical models to describe dynamic effects at resonant light scattering by subwavelength particles. One of them is based on generalization of the temporal coupled-mode theory, and the other employs the normal mode approach. We show that sharp variations in the envelope of the incident pulse may initiate unusual, counterintuitive dynamics of the scattering associated with interference of modes with fast and slow relaxation. To exhibit the power of the models, we apply them to explain the dynamic light scattering of a square-envelope pulse by an infinite circular cy…
Cavities play a fundamental role in wave phenomena from quantum mechanics to electromagnetism and dictate the spatiotemporal physics of lasers. In general, they are constructed by closing all "doors" through which waves can escape. We report, at room temperature, a bound state in the continuum laser that harnesses optical modes residing in the radiation continuum but nonetheless may possess arbitrarily high quality factors. These counterintuitive cavities are based on resonantly trapped symmetry-compatible modes that destructively interfere. Our experimental demonstration opens exciting avenue…
A detailed analytical inspection of light scattering by a particle with high refractive index m+iκand small dissipative constant κis presented. We have shown that there is a dramatic difference in the behavior of the electromagnetic field within the particle (inner problem) and the scattered field outside it (outer problem). With an increase in m at fix values of the other parameters, the field within the particle asymptotically converges to a periodic function of m. The electric and magnetic type Mie resonances of different orders overlap substantially. It may lead to a giant concentration of…
We study numerically, analytically and experimentally the resonant transmission of light in a waveguide formed by a periodic array of high-index dielectric nanoparticles with a side-coupled resonator. We demonstrate that a resonator with high enough Q-factor provides the conditions for the Fano-type interference allowing to control the resonant transmission of light. We suggest a practical realization of this resonant effect based on the quadrupole resonance of a dielectric particle and demonstrate it experimentally for ceramic spheres at microwaves.
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) and Fano resonances in planar photonic lattices, including metasurfaces and photonic crystal slabs, have been studied extensively in recent years. Typically, the BICs and Fano resonances are associated with the second stop bands open at the second-order Gamma ($Γ$) point. This paper address the fundamental properties of the fourth stop band accompanied by BICs at the third-order $Γ$ point in one-dimensional (1D) leaky-mode photonic lattices. At the fourth stop band, one band edge mode suffers radiation loss, thereby generating a Fano resonance, while the ot…
Fano resonance exhibiting an asymmetric spectral line shape is a universal phenomenon observed in diverse physical systems. Here we experimentally establish a direct link between the spectral asymmetry parameter and a physically realizable phase factor of interference between a continuum and a discrete mode that leads to Fano resonance. Using a specially designed metamaterial, namely waveguided plasmonic crystal with a spatially varying orientation axis of plasmonic grating, we demonstrate control on the spectral asymmetry of the Fano resonance through changes in the geometric phase of polariz…
We present a general theory for the coherence of Fano lasers based on a bound state in the continuum. We find that such lasers enable orders of magnitude reduction of the quantum-limited linewidth, and by introducing mirror symmetry breaking, the linewidth can be further reduced. In contrast to ordinary macroscopic lasers, though, the linewidth may re-broaden due to optical nonlinearities enhanced by the strong light localization. This leads to the identification of optimal material systems. We also show that the coherence of this new type of microscopic laser can be understood intuitively usi…
We report the observation of a Fano resonance between continuum Mie scattering and a narrow Bragg band in synthetic opal photonic crystals. The resonance leads to a transmission spectrum exhibiting a Bragg dip with an asymmetric profile, which can be tunably reversed to a Bragg rise. The Fano asymmetry parameter is linked with the dielectric contrast between the permittivity of the filler and the specific value determined by the opal matrix. The existence of the Fano resonance is directly related to disorder due to non-uniformity of a-SiO2 opal spheres. Proposed theoretical "quasi-3D" model pr…
We consider the process of light scattering by optical solitons in a planar waveguide with homogeneous and inhomogeneous refractive index core. We observe resonant reflection (Fano resonances) as well as resonant transmission of light by optical solitons. All resonant effects can be controlled in experiment by changing the soliton intensity.
We present a microscopic model describing the transition to strong coupling regime for an emitter resonantly coupled to a surface plasmon in a metal-dielectric structure. We demonstrate that the shape of scattering spectra is determined by an interplay of two distinct mechanisms. First is the near-field coupling between the emitter and the plasmon mode which underpins energy exchange between the system components and gives rise to exciton-induced transparency minimum in scattering spectra prior the transition to strong coupling regime. The second mechanism is Fano interference between the plas…
We consider the process of low-power light scattering by optical solitons in a slab waveguide with homogeneous and inhomogeneous refractive index core. We observe resonant reflection (Fano resonance) as well as resonant transmission of light by optical solitons at certain incident angles. The resonance position can be controlled experimentally by changing the soliton intensity and the relative frequency detuning between the soliton and the probe light beams.
On periodic structures sandwiched between two homogeneous media, a bound state in the continuum (BIC) is a guided Bloch mode with a frequency within the radiation continuum. BICs are useful, since they give rise to high quality-factor ($Q$-factor) resonances that enhance local fields for diffraction problems with given incident waves. For any BIC on a periodic structure, there is always a surrounding family of resonant modes with $Q$-factors approaching infinity. We analyze field enhancement around BICs using analytic and numerical methods. Based on a perturbation method, we show that field en…
