Based on the substantial difference in the response time for the resonant and background partitions at stepwise variations of the exiting signal, a simple exactly integrable model describing the dynamic Fano resonance (DFRs) is proposed. The model does not have any fitting parameters, may include any number of resonant partitions and exhibits high accuracy. It is shown that at the point of the destructive interference any sharp variation of the amplitude of the excitation (no matter an increase or a decrease) gives rise to pronounced "flashes" in the intensity of the output signal. In particular, the flash should appear behind the trailing edge of the exciting pulse, when the excitation is already over. The model is applied to explain the DFRs at the light scattering by a dielectric cylinder with two resonant modes excited simultaneously and exhibits the excellent agreement with the results of the direct numerical integration of the Maxwell equations.
We report the observation of a Fano resonance between continuum Mie scattering and a narrow Bragg band in synthetic opal photonic crystals. The resonance leads to a transmission spectrum exhibiting a Bragg dip with an asymmetric profile, which can be tunably reversed to a Bragg rise. The Fano asymmetry parameter is linked with the dielectric contrast between the permittivity of the filler and the specific value determined by the opal matrix. The existence of the Fano resonance is directly related to disorder due to non-uniformity of a-SiO2 opal spheres. Proposed theoretical "quasi-3D" model pr…
We show that the physics of anapole excitations can be accurately described in terms of a resonant state expansion formulation of standard Mie theory without recourse to Cartesian coordinate based `toroidal' currents that have previously been used to describe this phenomenon. In this purely Mie theory framework, the anapole behavior arises as a result of a Fano-type interference effect between different quasi-normal modes of the scatterer that effectively eliminate the scattered field in the associated multipole order.
A detailed analytical inspection of light scattering by a particle with high refractive index m+iκand small dissipative constant κis presented. We have shown that there is a dramatic difference in the behavior of the electromagnetic field within the particle (inner problem) and the scattered field outside it (outer problem). With an increase in m at fix values of the other parameters, the field within the particle asymptotically converges to a periodic function of m. The electric and magnetic type Mie resonances of different orders overlap substantially. It may lead to a giant concentration of…
All-dielectric resonant nanophotonics lies at the heart of modern optics and nanotechnology due to the unique possibilities to control scattering of light from high-index dielectric nanoparticles and metasurfaces. One of the important concepts of dielectric Mie-resonant nanophotonics is associated with the Kerker effect that drives the unidirectional scattering of light from nanoantennas and Huygens' metasurfaces. Here we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a novel effect manifested in the nearly complete simultaneous suppression of both forward and backward scattered fields. This effect is…
Subwavelength structures demonstrate many unusual optical properties which can be employed for engineering functional metadevices, as well as scattering of light and invisibility cloaking. Here we demonstrate that the suppression of light scattering for any direction of observation can be achieved for an uniform dielectric object with high refractive index, in a sharp contrast to the cloaking with multilayered plasmonic structures suggested previously. Our finding is based on the novel physics of cascades of Fano resonances observed in the Mie scattering from a homogeneous dielectric rod. We o…
Based on the Lorenz-Mie theory, we derive analytical expressions of radiative and nonradiative transition rates for different orientations of a point dipole emitter in the vicinity of an infinitely long circular cylinder of arbitrary radius. Special attention is devoted to the spontaneous decay rate of a dipole emitter near a subwavelength-diameter nanowire coated with a graphene monolayer. We show that plasmonic Fano resonances associated with light scattering by graphene-coated nanowires appear in the Purcell factor as a function of transition wavelength. Furthermore, the Fano line shape of …
We analytically study the spontaneous emission of a single optical dipole emitter in the vicinity of a plasmonic nanoshell, based on the Lorenz-Mie theory. We show that the fluorescence enhancement due to the coupling between optical emitter and sphere can be tuned by the aspect ratio of the core-shell nanosphere and by the distance between the quantum emitter and its surface. In particular, we demonstrate that both the enhancement and quenching of the fluorescence intensity are associated with plasmonic Fano resonances induced by near- and far-field interactions. These Fano resonances have as…
Despite a long history, light scattering by particles with size comparable with the light wavelength still unveils surprising optical phenomena, and many of them are related to the Fano effect. Originally described in the context of atomic physics, the Fano resonance in light scattering arises from the interference between a narrow subradiant mode and a spectrally broad radiation line. Here, we present an overview of Fano resonances in coated spherical scatterers within the framework of the Lorenz-Mie theory. We briefly introduce the concept of conventional and unconventional Fano resonances i…
We investigate multiple Fano, comblike scattering resonances in single-layered, concentric core-shell nanoparticles composed of magnetic materials. Using the Lorenz-Mie theory, we derive, in the long-wavelength limit, an analytical condition for the occurrence of comblike resonances in the single scattering by coated spheres. This condition establishes that comblike scattering response uniquely depends on material parameters and thickness of the shell, provided that it is magnetic and thin compared to the scatterer radius. We also demonstrate that comblike scattering response shows up beyond t…
Fano resonances are features in transmissivity/reflectivity/absorption that owe their origin to the interaction between a bright resonance and a dark (i.e., sub-radiant) narrower resonance, and may emerge in the optical properties of planar two-dimensional (2D) periodic arrays (metasurfaces) of plasmonic nanoparticles. In this Letter, we provide a thorough assessment of their nature for the general case of normal and oblique plane wave incidence, highlighting when a Fano resonance is affected by the mutual coupling in an array and its capability to support free modal solutions. We analyze the …
We propose, solve, and discuss a simple model for a metamaterial incorporating optical gain: A single bosonic resonance is coupled to a fermionic (inverted) two-level-system resonance via local-field interactions. For given steady-state inversion, this model can be solved analytically, revealing a rich variety of (Fano) absorption/gain lineshapes. We also give an analytic expression for the fixed inversion resulting from gain pinning under steady-state conditions. Furthermore, the dynamic response of the 'lasing SPASER', i.e., its relaxation oscillations, can be obtained by simple numerical ca…
It is shown that elastic resonance scattering of light by a finite-size obstacle with weak dissipation is analogous to quantum scattering by a potential with quasi-discrete levels and exhibits Fano resonances. Localized plasmons (polaritons), exited in the obstacle by the incident light, are equivalent to the quasi-discrete levels, while the radiative decay of these excitations plays exactly the same role as tunnelling from the quasi-discrete levels for the quantum problem. Mie scattering of light by a spherical particle and an exactly solvable discrete model with nonlocal coupling simulating …
In contrast to lossy plasmonic metasurfaces (MSs), wideband dielectric MSs comprising of subwavelength nanostructures supporting Mie resonances are of great interest in the visible wavelength range. Here, for the first time to our knowledge, we experimentally demonstrate a reflective MS consisting of a square-lattice array of Hafnia (HfO$_2$) nanopillars to generate a wide color gamut. To design and optimize these MSs, we use a deep-learning algorithm based on a dimensionality reduction technique. Good agreement is observed between simulation and experimental results in yielding vivid and high…
The study of resonant dielectric nanostructures with high refractive index is a new research direction in nanoscale optics and metamaterial-inspired nanophotonics. Because of the unique optically-induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances, high-index nanoscale structures are expected to complement or even replace different plasmonic components in a range of potential applications. Here we study strong coupling between modes of a single subwavelength high-index dielectric resonator and analyse the mode transformation and Fano resonances when resonator's aspect ratio varies. We demonstrate tha…
We carry out numerical calculations of the scattering cross section of tubular semiconductor nanocylinders in the optical range. The scattering is investigated for the transversal incidence of light, i.e., along the diameter of the cylinder, with both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarization. These subwavelength nanostructures support Mie resonances and, when the length of the cylinder is comparable to the wavelength, guided modes that can overlap with the Mie modes giving rise to sharp Fano resonances. We show that a varying internal radius affects each mode differently, allow…
The full control of the fundamental photophysics of nanosystems at frequencies as high as few THz is key for tunable and ultrafast nano-photonic devices and metamaterials. Here we combine geometrical and ultrafast control of the optical properties of halide perovskite nanoparticles, which constitute a prominent platform for nanophotonics. The pulsed photoinjection of free carriers across the semiconducting gap leads to a sub-picosecond modification of the far-field electromagnetic properties that is fully controlled by the geometry of the system. When the nanoparticle size is tuned so as to ac…
The study of nanostructured artificial media for optics has expanded rapidly over the last few decades, coupled with improvements of fabrication technology that have enabled investigation of previously unrealisable optical scattering systems. Such development is complemented by renewed impetus to understand the physics of optical scattering from complex subwavelength geometry and nanoparticle systems. Here I investigate specifically the optical properties of closely packed arrangements of nanoparticles, known as nanoparticle oligomers, which provide an intuitive platform for analytical and num…
The review is devoted to a discussion of new (and often unexpected) aspects of the old problem of elastic light scattering by small metal particles, whose size is comparable to or smaller than the thickness of the skin layer. The main focus is put on elucidating the physical grounds for these new aspects. It is shown that, in many practically important cases, the scattering of light by such particles, despite their smallness, may have almost nothing in common with the Rayleigh one. The so-called, anomalous scattering and absorption, as well as Fano resonances, including unconventional (associa…
