This paper studies homogenization of symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms with $α$-stable-like jumping kernels in one-parameter stationary ergodic environment. Under suitable conditions, we establish homogenization results and identify the limiting effective Dirichlet forms explicitly. The coefficients of the jumping kernels of Dirichlet forms and symmetrizing measures are allowed to be degenerate and unbounded; and the coefficients in the effective Dirichlet forms can be degenerate.
We prove that diffusion equations with a space-time stationary and ergodic, divergence-free drift homogenize in law to a deterministic stochastic partial differential equation with Stratonovich transport noise. In the absence of spatial ergodicity, the drift is only partially absorbed into the skew-symmetric part of the flux through the use of an appropriately defined stream matrix. This leaves a time-dependent, spatially-homogenous transport which, for mildly decorrelating fields, converges to a Brownian noise with deterministic covariance in the homogenization limit. The results apply to uni…
We study the problem of characterizing the effective (homogenized) properties of materials whose diffusive properties are modeled with random fields. Focusing on elliptic PDEs with stationary and ergodic random coefficient functions, we provide a gentle introduction to the mathematical theory of homogenization of random media. We also present numerical examples to elucidate the theoretical concepts and results.
We present a homogenization result for $L^\infty$ variational problems in general stationary ergodic random environments. By introducing a generalized notion of distance function (a special solution of an associated eikonal equation) and demonstrating a connection to absolute minimizers of the variational problem, we obtain the homogenization result as a consequence of the fact that the latter homogenizes in random environments.
We consider the corrector equation from the stochastic homogenization of uniformly elliptic finite-difference equations with random, possibly non-symmetric coefficients. Under the assumption that the coefficients are stationary and ergodic in the quantitative form of a Logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI), we obtain optimal bounds on the corrector and its gradient in dimensions $d \geq 2$. Similar estimates have recently been obtained in the special case of diagonal coefficients making extensive use of the maximum principle and scalar techniques. Our new method only invokes arguments that are …
We study homogenization properties of the discrete Laplace operator with random conductances on a large domain in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. More precisely, we prove almost-sure homogenization of the discrete Poisson equation and of the top of the Dirichlet spectrum. We assume that the conductances are stationary, ergodic and nearest-neighbor conductances are positive. In contrast to earlier results, we do not require uniform ellipticity but certain integrability conditions on the lower and upper tails of the conductances. We further allow jumps of arbitrary length. Without the long-range connections, th…
This paper deals with homogenization of second order divergence form parabolic operators with locally stationary coefficients. Roughly speaking, locally stationary coefficients have two evolution scales: both an almost constant microscopic one and a smoothly varying macroscopic one. The homogenization procedure aims to give a macroscopic approximation that takes into account the microscopic heterogeneities. This paper follows "Diffusion in a locally stationary random environment" (published in Probability Theory and Related Fields) and improves this latter work by considering possibly degenera…
In this paper, we study high order correctors in stochastic homogenization. We consider elliptic equations in divergence form on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, with the random coefficients constructed from i.i.d. random variables. We prove moment bounds on the high order correctors and their gradients under dimensional constraints. It implies the existence of stationary correctors and stationary gradients in high dimensions. As an application, we prove a two-scale expansion of the solutions to the random PDE, which identifies the first and higher order random fluctuations in a strong sense.
We consider discrete non-divergence form difference operators in a random environment and the corresponding process--the random walk in a balanced random environment in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with a finite range of dependence. We first quantify the ergodicity of the environment from the point of view of the particle. As a consequence, we quantify the quenched central limit theorem of the random walk with an algebraic rate. Furthermore, we prove an algebraic rate of convergence for the homogenization of the Dirichlet problems for both elliptic and parabolic non-divergence form difference operators.
A first-order Liouville theorem is obtained for random ensembles of uniformly parabolic systems under the mere qualitative assumptions of stationarity and ergodicity. Furthermore, the paper establishes, almost surely, an intrinsic large-scale $C^{1,α}$-regularity estimate for caloric functions.
This note addresses the homogenization error for linear elliptic equations in divergence-form with random stationary coefficients. The homogenization error is measured by comparing the quenched Green's function to the Green's function belonging to the homogenized coefficients, more precisely, by the (relative) spatial decay rate of the difference of their second mixed derivatives. The contribution of this note is purely deterministic: It uses the expanded notion of corrector, namely the couple of scalar and vector potentials $(ϕ,σ)$, and shows that the rate of sublinear growth of $(ϕ,σ)$ at th…
We investigate a functional limit theorem (homogenization) for Reflected Stochastic Differential Equations on a half-plane with stationary coefficients when it is necessary to analyze both the effective Brownian motion and the effective local time. We prove that the limiting process is a reflected non-standard Brownian motion. Beyond the result, this problem is known as a prototype of non-translation invariant problem making the usual method of the "environment as seen from the particle" inefficient.
We consider the homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi equations and degenerate Bellman equations in stationary, ergodic, unbounded environments. We prove that, as the microscopic scale tends to zero, the equation averages to a deterministic Hamilton-Jacobi equation and study some properties of the effective Hamiltonian. We discover a connection between the effective Hamiltonian and an eikonal-type equation in exterior domains. In particular, we obtain a new formula for the effective Hamiltonian. To prove the results we introduce a new strategy to obtain almost sure homogenization, completing a pro…
We consider homogenization of random surfaces and study the variational principle for graph homomorphisms from subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^m$ into $\mathbb{Z}$, where the underlying uniform measure is perturbed by a random field. Motivated by the theories of random walks in random potentials, we assume that random field is stationary, ergodic, and bounded in $L^1$ . We show that the variational principle holds in probability and that the entropy functional homogenizes, i.e.\ is independent of the values taken by the random field. The main ingredients in the argument are the existence of the quenche…
We adapt the metric approach to the study of stationary ergodic Hamilton-Jacobi equations, for which a notion of admissible random (sub)solution is defined. For any level of the Hamiltonian greater than or equal to a distinguished critical value, we define an intrinsic random semidistance and prove that an asymptotic norm does exist. Taking as source region a suitable class of closed random sets, we show that the Lax formula provides admissible subsolutions. This enables us to relate the degeneracies of the critical stable norm to the existence/nonexistence of exact or approximate critical adm…
We perform a qualitative analysis of the critical equation associated with a stationary ergodic Hamiltonian through a stochastic version of the metric method, where the notion of closed random stationary set, issued from stochastic geometry, plays a major role. Our purpose is to give an appropriate notion of random Aubry set, to single out characterizing conditions for the existence of exact or approximate correctors, and write down representation formulae for them. For the last task, we make use of a Lax--type formula, adapted to the stochastic environment. This material can be regarded as a …
In this paper, we consider stochastic homogenization of elliptic equations with unbounded and non-uniformly elliptic coefficients. Extending subadditive arguments, we get an estimate for the rate of the convergence of the solution of the Dirichlet problem under the condition that coefficients in the unit cube have a certain exponential integrability. For the coefficient field $\mathbf{a}$ in this paper, we only assume a constant decrease at a constant distance of the maximal correlation as an assumption of ergodicity, and stationarity with respect to $\mathbb{Z}^d$-translations.
In the paper we consider the solution of an advection equation with rapidly changing coefficients $\partial_t u_\eps+(1/\eps)V(t\eps^{-2},x/{\eps})\cdot\nabla_x u_\eps=0$ for $t<T$ and $u_\eps(T,x)=u_0(x)$, $x\in\bbR^d$. Here $\eps>0$ is some small parameter and the drift term $\left(V(t,x)\right)_{(t,x)\in \bbR^{1+d}}$ is assumed to be a $d$-dimensional, vector valued random field with incompressible spatial realizations. We prove that when the field is Gaussian, locally stationary, quasi-periodic in the $x$ variable and strongly mixing in time the solutions $u_\eps(t,x)$ converge in law, as …
In this paper, we focus on the Keller-Segel chemotaxis system in a random heterogeneous domain. We assume that the corresponding diffusion and chemotaxis coefficients are given by stationary ergodic random fields and apply stochastic two-scale convergence methods to derive the homogenized macroscopic equations. In establishing our results, we also derive a priori estimates for the Keller-Segel system that rely only on the boundedness of the coefficients; in particular, no differentiability assumption on the diffusion and chemotaxis coefficients for the chemotactic species is required. Finally,…
We study ergodic quadratic optimal stochastic control problems for an affine state equation with state and control dependent noise and with stochastic coefficients. We assume stationarity of the coefficients and a finite cost condition. We first treat the stationary case and we show that the optimal cost corresponding to this ergodic control problem coincides with the one corresponding to a suitable stationary control problem and we provide a full characterization of the ergodic optimal cost and control.
In this note we identify the distributional limits of non-negative, ergodic stationary processes, showing that all are possible. Consequences for infinite ergodic theory are also explored and new examples of distributionally stable- and $α$-rationally ergodic tranformations are presented.
We are concerned with homogenization of stochastic differential equations (SDE) with stationary coefficients driven by Poisson random measures and Brownian motions in the critical case, that is when the limiting equation admits both a Brownian part as well as a pure jump part. We state an annealed convergence theorem. This problem is deeply connected with homogenization of integral partial differential equations
We obtain pointwise ergodic theorems with rate under conditions expressed in terms of the convergence of series involving $\|\sum_{k=1} ^nf\circ θ^k\|_2$, improving previous results. Then, using known results on martingale approximation, we obtain some LIL for stationary ergodic processes and quenched central limit theorems for functional of Markov chains. The proofs are based on the use of the spectral theorem and, on a recent work of Zhao-Woodroofe extending a method of Derriennic-Lin.
We study the ergodic theory of stationary directed nearest-neighbor polymer models on $\mathbb Z^2$, with i.i.d. weights. Such models are equivalent to specifying a stationary distribution on the space of weights and correctors that satisfy certain consistency conditions. We show that for prescribed weight distribution and corrector mean, there is at most one stationary polymer distribution which is ergodic under the $e_1$ or $e_2$ shift. Further, if the weights have more than two moments and the corrector mean vector is an extreme point of the superdifferential of the limiting free energy, th…
A stationary random graph is a random rooted graph whose distribution is invariant under re-rooting along the simple random walk. We adapt the entropy technique developed for Cayley graphs and show in particular that stationary random graphs of subexponential growth are almost surely Liouville, that is, admit no non constant bounded harmonic function. Applications include the uniform infinite planar quadrangulation and long-range percolation clusters.
We study a symmetric diffusion $X$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ in divergence form in a stationary and ergodic environment, with measurable unbounded and degenerate coefficients $a^ω$. The diffusion is formally associated with $L^ωu = \nabla\cdot(a^ω\nabla u)$, and we make sense of it through Dirichlet forms theory. We prove for $X$ a quenched invariance principle, under some moment conditions on the environment; the key tool is the sublinearity of the corrector obtained by Moser's iteration scheme.
We extend to Lipschitz continuous functionals either of the true paths or of the Euler scheme with decreasing step of a wide class of Brownian ergodic diffusions, the Central Limit Theorems formally established for their marginal empirical measure of these processes (which is classical for the diffusions and more recent as concerns their discretization schemes). We illustrate our results by simulations in connection with barrier option pricing.
It is demonstrated how to represent asymptotically mean stationary (AMS) random sources with values in standard spaces as mixtures of ergodic AMS sources. This an extension of the well known decomposition of stationary sources which has facilitated the generalization of prominent source coding theorems to arbitrary, not necessarily ergodic, stationary sources. Asymptotic mean stationarity generalizes the definition of stationarity and covers a much larger variety of real-world examples of random sources of practical interest. It is sketched how to obtain source coding and related theorems for …
We study conservative particle systems on W^S, where S is countable and W = {0, ..., N} or the natural numbers. The rate of a particle moving from site x to site y is given by p(x,y) b(eta_x, eta_y), where eta_z is the number of particles at site z. Under assumptions on b and the assumption that p is finite range, which allow for the exclusion, zero range and misanthrope processes, we show exactly what the stationary product measures are. Furthermore we show that a stationary measure mu is ergodic if and only if the tail sigma algebra of the partial sums is trivial under mu. This is a conseque…
We study the partial maxima of stationary α-stable processes. We relate their asymptotic behavior to the ergodic theoretical properties of the flow. We observe a sharp change in the asymptotic behavior of the sequence of partial maxima as flow changes from being dissipative to being conservative, and argue that this may indicate a change from a short memory process to a long memory process.
We consider the symmetric exclusion process on the $d$-dimensional lattice with translational invariant and ergodic initial data. It is then known that as $t$ diverges the distribution of the process at time $t$ converges to a Bernoulli product measure. Assuming a summable decay of correlations of the initial data, we prove a quantitative version of this convergence by obtaining an explicit bound on the Ornstein $\bar d$-distance. The proof is based on the analysis of a two species exclusion process with annihilation.
We consider "randomized" statistics constructed by using a finite number of observations a random field at randomly chosen points. We generalize the invariance principle (the functional CLT), the Glivenko--Cantelli theorem, the theorem about convergence to the Brownian bridge and the Kolmogorov theorem about the limit distribution of the empirical distribution function, as well as an improved version of the CLT in A. Tempelman, Randomized multivariate central limit theorems for ergodic homogeneous random fields, Stochastic Processes and their Applications. 143 (2022), 89-105. The randomized ap…
We construct a stationary ergodic process $X_1, X_2, \ldots $ such that each $X_t$ has the uniform distribution on the unit square and the length $L_n$ of the shortest path through the points $X_1, X_2, \ldots,X_n$ is not asymptotic to a constant times the square root of $n$. In other words, we show that the Beardwood, Halton and Hammersley theorem does not extend from the case of independent uniformly distributed random variables to the case of stationary ergodic sequences with uniform marginal distributions.
We show the existance of the stationary distributions of subcritical multitype Galton-Watson processes without any conditions on the mean matrix of the offspring distributions. Some additional properties of the stationary distribution are also proven.
We establish a variational formula for the exponential decay rate of the Green function of Brownian motion evolving in a random stationary and ergodic nonnegative potential. Such a variational formula is established by Schroeder in 'Green's Functions for the Schrödinger Operator with Periodic Potential', J. Funct. Anal. 77 (1988), for potentials on compact spaces and is generalised in the present article to a non-compact setting. We show exponential decay of the Green function implicitly. This formula for the Lyapunov exponent has several direct implications. It allows to compare the influence…
We study discrete linear divergence-form operators with random coefficients, also known as the random conductance model. We assume that the conductances are bounded, independent and stationary; the law of a conductance may depend on the orientation of the associated edge. We give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the relaxation of the environment seen by the particle to be diffusive, in the sense of every polynomial moment. As a consequence, we derive polynomial moment estimates on the corrector.
We study the ergodic properties of finite-dimensional systems of SDEs driven by non-degenerate additive fractional Brownian motion with arbitrary Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$. A general framework is constructed to make precise the notions of ``invariant measure'' and ``stationary state'' for such a system. We then prove under rather weak dissipativity conditions that such an SDE possesses a unique stationary solution and that the convergence rate of an arbitrary solution towards the stationary one is (at least) algebraic. A lower bound on the exponent is also given.
A central question in numerical homogenization of partial differential equations with multiscale coefficients is the accurate computation of effective quantities, such as the homogenized coefficients. Computing homogenized coefficients requires solving local corrector problems followed by upscaling relevant local data. The most naive way of computing homogenized coefficients is by solving a local elliptic problem, which is known to suffer from the so-called resonance error dominating all other errors inherent in multiscale computations. A far more efficient modelling strategy, based on adding …
We proposed a learning algorithm for nonparametric estimation and on-line prediction for general stationary ergodic sources. We prepare histograms each of which estimates the probability as a finite distribution, and mixture them with weights to construct an estimator. The whole analysis is based on measure theory. The estimator works whether the source is discrete or continuous. If it is stationary ergodic, then the measure theoretically given Kullback-Leibler information divided by the sequence length $n$ converges to zero as $n$ goes to infinity. In particular, for continuous sources, the m…
We establish characterization results for the ergodicity of stationary symmetric $α$-stable (S$α$S) and $α$-Frechet random fields. We show that the result of Samorodnitsky [Ann. Probab. 33 (2005) 1782-1803] remains valid in the multiparameter setting, that is, a stationary S$α$S ($0<α<2$) random field is ergodic (or, equivalently, weakly mixing) if and only if it is generated by a null group action. Similar results are also established for max-stable random fields. The key ingredient is the adaption of a characterization of positive/null recurrence of group actions by Takahashi [Kodai Math. Se…
The setting is a stationary, ergodic time series. The challenge is to construct a sequence of functions, each based on only finite segments of the past, which together provide a strongly consistent estimator for the conditional probability of the next observation, given the infinite past. Ornstein gave such a construction for the case that the values are from a finite set, and recently Algoet extended the scheme to time series with coordinates in a Polish space. The present study relates a different solution to the challenge. The algorithm is simple and its verification is fairly transparent. …
This brief pedagogical note re-proves a simple theorem on the convergence, in $L_2$ and in probability, of time averages of non-stationary time series to the mean of expectation values. The basic condition is that the sum of covariances grows sub-quadratically with the length of the time series. I make no claim to originality; the result is widely, but unevenly, spread bit of folklore among users of applied probability. The goal of this note is merely to even out that distribution.
It is well known that stationary geometrically ergodic Markov chains are $β$-mixing (absolutely regular) with geometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Furthermore, for initial distributions other than the stationary one, geometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing under suitable moment assumptions. In this note we show that similar results hold also for subgeometrically ergodic Markov chains. In particular, for both stationary and other initial distributions, subgeometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing with subgeometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Although this result is simple it should p…
Let $\{X_n\}$ be a stationary and ergodic time series taking values from a finite or countably infinite set ${\cal X}$. Assume that the distribution of the process is otherwise unknown. We propose a sequence of stopping times $λ_n$ along which we will be able to estimate the conditional probability $P(X_{λ_n+1}=x|X_0,...,X_{λ_n})$ from data segment $(X_0,...,X_{λ_n})$ in a pointwise consistent way for a restricted class of stationary and ergodic finite or countably infinite alphabet time series which includes among others all stationary and ergodic finitarily Markovian processes. If the statio…
Let $\{(X_i,Y_i)\}$ be a stationary ergodic time series with $(X,Y)$ values in the product space $\R^d\bigotimes \R .$ This study offers what is believed to be the first strongly consistent (with respect to pointwise, least-squares, and uniform distance) algorithm for inferring $m(x)=E[Y_0|X_0=x]$ under the presumption that $m(x)$ is uniformly Lipschitz continuous. Auto-regression, or forecasting, is an important special case, and as such our work extends the literature of nonparametric, nonlinear forecasting by circumventing customary mixing assumptions. The work is motivated by a time series…
