We study the environments of a sample of 61 extremely rare z~1.6 Ultra-Massive Passively Evolving Galaxies (UMPEGs: stellar masses M_stars >10^11.5 M_sun) which -- based on clustering analysis presented in Cheema et al. (2020) -- appear to be associated with very massive (M_halo ~ 10^14.1 h^-1 M_sun) dark matter halos that are likely to be the progenitors of z~0 massive (Coma- and Virgo-like) galaxy clusters. We find that UMPEGs on average have fewer than one satellite galaxy with mass ratio M_sat : M_UMPEG >~ 1:5 (i.e., M_sat >~ 10^10.8 M_sun) within 0.5 Mpc; the large mass gap that we observe between the typical UMPEG and its most massive satellite implies that the z~1.6 UMPEGs assembled through major mergers. Using observed satellite counts with merger timescales from the literature, we estimate the growth rate due to mergers with mass ratio of >~ 1:4 to be ~13% Gyr^-1 (with a ~2x systematic uncertainty). This relatively low growth rate is unlikely to significantly affect the shape of the massive end of the stellar mass function, whose evolution must instead be driven by the quenching of new cohorts of ultra-massive star-forming galaxies. However, this growth rate is high enough that, if sustained to z~0, the typical z~1.6 M_UMPEG=10^11.6 M_sun UMPEG can grow into a M_stars~10^12 M_sun brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of a present-day massive galaxy cluster. Our observations favour a scenario in which our UMPEGs are main-branch progenitors of some of the present-day BCGs that have first assembled through major mergers at high redshifts and grown further through (likely minor) merging at later times.
We present a new method for tracing the evolution of BCGs from $z\sim 2$ to $z\sim 0$. We conclude on the basis of semi-analytical models that the best method to select BCG progenitors at $z\sim 2$ is a hybrid environmental density and stellar mass ranking approach. Ultimately we are able to retrieve 45\% of BCG progenitors. We apply this method on the CANDELS UDS data to construct a progenitor sample at high redshift. We furthermore populate the comparisons in local universe by using SDSS data with statistically likely contamination to ensure a fair comparison between high and low redshifts. …
We investigate the formation channels of the intracluster light (ICL) and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in clusters at $z=0$. For this, we perform multi-resolution cosmological N-body simulations using the "Galaxy Replacement Technique" (GRT). We study the formation channels of the ICL and BCG as a function of distance from the cluster center and the dynamical state of the clusters at $z=0$. To do this, we trace back the stars of the ICL and BCG, and identify the stellar components in which they existed when they first fell into the clusters. We find that the progenitors of the ICL and BC…
We analyze the stellar growth of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) produced by cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamical simulations of the formation of massive galaxy clusters. The evolution of the stellar mass content is studied considering different apertures, and tracking backwards either the main progenitor of the $z=0$ BCG or that of the cluster hosting the BCG at $z=0$. Both methods lead to similar results up to $z \simeq 1.5$. The simulated BCGs masses at $z=0$ are in agreement with recent observations. In the redshift interval from $z=1$ to $z=0$ we find growth factors 1.3, 1.6 and 3.6 for …
We examine the role of environment on the in situ star formation (SF) hosted by the progenitors of the most massive galaxies in the present-day universe, the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), from $z \sim 3$ to present in the COSMOS field. Progenitors are selected from the COSMOS field using a stellar mass cut motivated by the evolving cumulative comoving number density of progenitors within the Illustris simulation, as well as the Millennium-II simulation and a constant comoving number density method for comparison. We characterize each progenitor using far-ultraviolet--far-infrared observat…
We use a 27.6 deg$^2$ survey to measure the clustering of $gzK_s$-selected quiescent galaxies at $z\sim1.6$, focusing on ultra-massive quiescent galaxies. We find that $z\sim1.6$ Ultra-Massive Passively Evolving Galaxies (UMPEGs), which have $K_s(AB)<19.75$ (stellar masses of $M_{stars}$ $>\sim 10^{11.4}M_{\odot}$ and mean $<$$M_{stars}$$>$ = $10^{11.5}M_{\odot}$), cluster more strongly than any other known galaxy population at high redshift. Comparing their correlation length, $r_0 = 29.77 \pm 2.75$ $ h^{-1}$Mpc, with the clustering of dark matter halos in the Millennium XXL N-body simulation…
We simulate the phase-space distribution of stellar mass in 9 massive Lambda-CDM galaxy clusters by applying the semi-analytic particle tagging method of Cooper et al. to the Phoenix suite of high-resolution N-body simulations (M200 = 7.5 to 33 x 10^14 Msol). The resulting surface brightness (SB) profiles of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) match well to observations. On average, stars formed in galaxies accreted by the BCG account for ~90 per cent of its total mass (the remainder is formed in situ). In circular BCG-centred apertures, the superposition of multiple debris clouds (each ~10 per …
We present the results of a survey of the brightest UV-selected galaxies in protoclusters. These proto-brightest cluster galaxy (proto-BCG) candidates are drawn from 179 overdense regions of $g$-dropout galaxies at $z\sim4$ from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program identified previously as good protocluster candidates. This study is the first to extend the systematic study of the progenitors of BCGs from $z\sim2$ to $z\sim4$. We carefully remove possible contaminants from foreground galaxies and, for each structure, we select the brightest galaxy that is at least 1 mag brighter than …
We analyse the star formation rates (SFRs), colours, and dust extinctions of galaxies in massive (10^12.5-10^13.5 Msun) haloes at z~2 in high-resolution, cosmological zoom-in simulations as part of the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. The simulations do not model feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) but reproduce well the observed relations between stellar and halo mass and between stellar mass and SFR. About half (a third) of the simulated massive galaxies (massive central galaxies) at z~2 have broad-band colours classifying them as 'quiescent', and the fraction of qui…
We explore the redshift evolution of the dynamical properties of massive clusters and their brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at $z < 2$ based on the IllustrisTNG-300 simulation. We select 270 massive clusters with $M_{200} < 10^{14}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$ at $z = 0$ and trace their progenitors based on merger trees. From 67 redshift snapshots covering $z < 2$, we compute the 3D subhalo velocity dispersion as a cluster velocity dispersion ($σ_{\rm cl}$). We also calculate the 3D stellar velocity dispersion of the BCGs ($σ_{\rm *,~BCG}$). Both $σ_{\rm cl}$ and $σ_{\rm *,~BCG}$ increase as universe ag…
Brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), particularly those at the centers of cool-core clusters, can exhibit star formation over spatial extents of up to $\gtrsim$100\,kpc at inferred rates of up to $\gtrsim100\rm\,M_\sun\,yr^{-1}$. Is their star formation also extended over time, as might be expected if fuelled by cooling of the surrounding hot intracluster gas -- a residual cooling flow -- as demonstrated hitherto only for the BCG in the Perseus cluster? Here, to infer the formation history of relatively young stars in the BCG of MACS\,J0329.7$-$0211, we fit model single-stellar-populations to th…
With Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we investigate the progenitor population and formation mechanisms of the intracluster light (ICL) for 23 galaxy groups and clusters ranging from 3$\times10^{13}<$M$_{500,c}$ [M$_\odot$]$<9\times10^{14}$ at 0.29$<$z$<$0.89. The color gradients of the BCG+ICL become bluer with increasing radius out to 53-100 kpc for all but one system, suggesting that violent relaxation after major mergers with the BCG cannot be the dominant source of ICL. For clusters the BCG+ICL luminosity at r$<$100 kpc (0.08-0.13 r$_{500,c}$) is 1.2-3.5$\times 10^{12}$L$_\odot$; for the g…
We investigate the formation of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the TNG300 cosmological simulation of the IllustrisTNG project. Our cluster sample consists of 700 haloes with $M_{200} \geq 5 \times 10^{13} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ at $z=0$, along with their progenitors at earlier epochs. This includes 280 systems with $M_{200} \geq 10^{14} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ at $z=0$, as well as three haloes with $M_{200} \geq 10^{15} \, \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. We find that the stellar masses and star formation rates of our simulated BCGs are in good agreement with observations at $z \lesssim 0.4$, and tha…
Today, the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) are passive and very massive galaxies at the center of their clusters, and they still accrete mass through swallowing companions and gas from cooling flows. However their formation history is not well known. We report CO(4$\rightarrow$3) and continuum map observations of the SpARCS1049+56 BCG at $z=1.709$, one of the most distant known BCGs. Our observations yield $M_{{\rm H}_2}<1.1\times10^{10}M_\odot$ for the BCG; while in CO(4$\rightarrow$3), we detect two gas-rich companions at the northeast and southeast of the BCG, within 20 kpc, with ${L^\pri…

We use the SED-fitting code Prospector to reconstruct the nonparametric star formation history (SFH) of massive ($\log M_*>10.3$) star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and quiescent galaxies (QGs) at redshift $z_{\rm{obs}}\sim2$ to investigate the joint evolution of star-formation activity and structural properties. We find significant correlations between the SFH of the galaxies and their morphology. Compared to extended SFGs, compact SFGs are more likely to have experienced multiple star-formation episodes, with the fractional mass formed during the older ($\ge1$ Gyr) episode being larger, suggesting…
Using the data set of The Three Hundred project, i.e. a suite of 324 hydrodynamical resimulations of cluster-sized haloes, we study galaxy cluster mergers and their effect on colour and luminosity changes of their brightest cluster galaxies (BCG). We track the main progenitor of each halo at z=0 and search for merger situations based on its mass accretion history, defining mergers as very rapid increases in the halo mass. Based upon the evolution of the dynamical state of the cluster we define a pre- and post-merger phase. We create a list of all these events and statistically study their mass…
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) residing in the centers of galaxy clusters are typically quenched giant ellipticals. A recent study hinted that star-forming galaxies with large disks, so-called superluminous spirals and lenticulars, are the BCGs of a subset of galaxy clusters. Based on the existing optical data it was not possible to constrain whether the superluminous disk galaxies reside at the center of galaxy clusters. In this work, we utilize XMM-Newton X-ray observations of five galaxy clusters to map the morphology of the intracluster medium (ICM), characterize the galaxy clusters, de…

We present a pilot study on the origin and assembly history of the ICL for four galaxy clusters at 0.44<z<0.57 observed with the Hubble Space Telescope from the Cluster Lensing and Supernova Survey with Hubble (CLASH) sample. Using this sample of clusters we set an empirical limit on the amount of scatter in ICL surface brightness profiles of such clusters at z=0.5 and constrain the progenitor population and formation mechanism of the ICL by measuring the ICL surface brightness profile, the ICL color and color gradient, and the total ICL luminosity within 10<r<110 kpc. The observed scatter is …
Massive stars are thought to be progenitors of Long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), most likely with a bias favouring low metallicity progenitors. Because galaxies do not have a constant metallicity throughout, the combination of line-of-sight absorption metallicity inferred from GRB afterglow spectroscopy and of host galaxy global metallicity derived from emission lines diagnostics represents a powerful way to probe both the bias function for GRB progenitors, and the chemical inhomogeneities across star forming regions. In this study, we predict the relationship between Zabs and Zem using three diff…

Understanding the formation history of brightest cluster galaxies is an important topic in galaxy formation. Utilizing the Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich cluster catalog, and applying the Ansatz that the most massive halos at one redshift remain among the most massive ones at a slightly later cosmic epoch, we have constructed cluster samples at redshift z~0.4 and z~0.2 that can be statistically regarded as progenitor-descendant pairs. This allows us to study the stellar mass assembly history of BCGs in these massive clusters at late times, finding the degree of growth between the two epochs is like…
We report the discovery of MAGAZ3NE J095924+022537, a spectroscopically-confirmed protocluster at $z = 3.3665^{+0.0009}_{-0.0012}$ around a spectroscopically-confirmed $UVJ$-quiescent ultra-massive galaxy (UMG; $M_{\star}=2.34^{+0.23}_{-0.34}\times10^{11} {\rm M}_\odot$) in the COSMOS UltraVISTA field. We present a total of 38 protocluster members (14 spectroscopic and 24 photometric), including the UMG. Notably, and in marked contrast to protoclusters previously reported at this epoch which have been found to contain predominantly star-forming members, we measure an elevated fraction of quies…
The cold molecular gas in contemporary galaxies is structured in discrete cloud complexes. These giant molecular clouds (GMCs), with $10^4$-$10^7$ solar masses and radii of 5-100 parsecs, are the seeds of star formation. Highlighting the molecular gas structure at such small scales in distant galaxies is observationally challenging. Only a handful of molecular clouds were reported in two extreme submillimetre galaxies at high redshift. Here we search for GMCs in a typical Milky Way progenitor at z = 1.036. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we mapped the CO(4-3) emi…
We report the first identification of a compact dense galaxy overdensity at $z\sim8$ dubbed A2744z8OD. A2744z8OD consists of eight $Y$-dropout galaxies behind Abell 2744 that is originally pinpointed by Hubble Frontier Fields studies. However, no studies have, so far, derived basic physical quantities of structure formation or made comparisons with theoretical models. We obtain a homogeneous sample of dropout galaxies at $z\sim8$ from eight field data of Hubble legacy images that are as deep as the A2744z8OD data. Using the sample, we find that a galaxy surface overdensity value of A2744z8OD i…
We study the radial number density and stellar mass density distributions of satellite galaxies in a sample of 60 massive clusters at 0.04<z<0.26 selected from the Multi-Epoch Nearby Cluster Survey (MENeaCS) and the Canadian Cluster Comparison Project (CCCP). In addition to ~10,000 spectroscopically confirmed member galaxies, we use deep ugri-band imaging to estimate photometric redshifts and stellar masses, and then statistically subtract fore-, and background sources using data from the COSMOS survey. We measure the galaxy number density and stellar mass density distributions in logarithmica…
We present an analysis of the formation and chemical evolution of stellar haloes around (a) Milky Way Analogue (MWA) galaxies and (b) galaxy clusters in the L-Galaxies 2020 semi-analytic model of galaxy evolution. Observed stellar halo properties are better reproduced when assuming a gradual stripping model for the removal of cold gas and stars from satellites, compared to an instantaneous stripping model. The slope of the stellar mass -- metallicity relation for MWA stellar haloes is in good agreement with that observed in the local Universe. This extends the good agreement between L-Galaxies…
We present the near-infrared high resolution imaging of an extremely dense group of galaxies at the core of the protocluster at $z=3.09$ in the SSA22 field by using the adaptive optics AO188 and the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (IRCS) on Subaru Telescope. Wide morphological variety of them suggests their on-going dramatic evolutions. One of the two quiescent galaxies (QGs), the most massive one in the group, is a compact elliptical with an effective radius $r_{e} = 1.37\pm0.75$ kpc. It supports the two-phase formation scenario of giant ellipticals today that a massive compact elliptical is…
We present a pilot study of the intracluster light (ICL) in massive clusters using imaging of the $z=0.566$ cluster of galaxies WHL J013719.8-08284 observed by the RELICS project with the HST. We measure the ICL fraction in four optical ACS/WFC filters (F435W, F475W, F606W, and F814W) and five infrared WFC3/IR bands (F105W, F110W, F125W, F140W, and F160W). The ICL maps are calculated using the free of a priori assumptions algorithm CICLE, and the cluster membership is estimated from photometric properties. We find optical ICL fractions that range between $\sim$6\% and 19\% in nice agreement wi…
About 2100 star-forming galaxy protocluster candidates at z=1-4 were identified at sub-mm wavelengths in the Planck all sky survey. Follow-up spectroscopic observations of a few candidates have confirmed the presence of actual galaxy overdensities with large star-formation rates. In this work, we use state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations to investigate whether the Planck high-z sub-mm sources are progenitors of massive clusters at z=0. To match the PHz sources with simulated halos, we select the most star-forming halos from z = 3 to z =1.3 in the TNG300 simulation. The total star formati…
Ly-$α$ tomography surveys have begun to produce three-dimensional (3D) maps of the intergalactic medium (IGM) opacity at $z \sim 2.5$ with Mpc resolution. These surveys provide an exciting new way to discover and characterize high-redshift overdensities, including the progenitors of today's massive groups and clusters of galaxies, known as protogroups and protoclusters. We use the IllustrisTNG-$300$ hydrodynamical simulation to build mock maps that realistically mimic those observed in the Ly-$α$ Tomographic IMACS Survey (LATIS). We introduce a novel method for delineating the boundaries of st…
[Abrigded] We have started a new deep, multi-imaging survey of the Fornax cluster, dubbed Fornax Deep Survey (FDS), at the VLT Survey Telescope. In this paper we present the deep photometry inside two square degrees around the bright galaxy NGC1399 in the core of the cluster. We found a very extended and diffuse envelope surrounding the luminous galaxy NGC1399: we map the surface brightness out to 33 arcmin (~ 192 kpc) from the galaxy center and down to about 31 mag/arcsec^2 in the g band. The deep photometry allows us to detect a faint stellar bridge in the intracluster region between NGC1399…
In this paper we study the properties of the six optically dark galaxies detected in the 69 arcmin^2 GOODS-ALMA 1.1mm continuum survey. While none of them are listed in the deepest H-band based CANDELS catalog in the GOODS-South field down to H=28.16AB, we were able to de-blend two of them from their bright neighbor and measure an $H$-band flux for them. We note that AGS4 and AGS15 have H=25.23, 27.11AB respectively. Their extreme proximity (0.50", 0.27") to a bright optical source and their extreme faintness prevented them from being included in the H-band catalog. We present the spectroscopi…
